Awful.
Very easy class if you work at it enough. The key is to have him check your papers before you turn them in and make corrections. He is extremely nice and you have to be able to ask for help when you need it.
Im not sure if its still in effect but, if the first paper isnt turned in by the second paper you fail. So if your on 3 and 4 is due you automatically fail, has nothing to do with your ablitity in english as closely as it should. He usually give about 3 attempts to get it accepted but on ocassion 2!
I thought Mr Arevalo was a great teacher and made the class requirements pretty easy.
stupid class without learning anything.......he doesnt teach you anything.....
I enjoyed this class as much as you can any class. He makes sure everyone understands when papers are due, so don't worry about that. He is pretty strict about when you need to turn papers in but it isn't that hard to get them in on time. Just keep up with papers and ask for help. He even has workshop days in class just so you can ask for help.
hardly to study in this class anymore
he is a moody guy sometimes he is cool other times he is mean overall i would say he is okay

I actually enjoyed this class...but then again, I am writer nerd!

He is so strict on when you need to turn in your papers and if you dont get one accepted by the time another is due, you fail. He does not help you and he is hard to catch in his office. He is never then when he says he will be. SAVE yourself and the trouble...Take another teacher!
He is strict on the deadlines but they aren't hard to meet.He was always in his office during his scheduled hours. He expects your papers exactly in the format he tells you.I enjoyed his class and as long as you keep up with your work it is pretty easy to pass. If you have any questions about the comments on your papers he will take time to explain.
If you don't expect to be babied like you were in high school you'll do just fine. He is very helpful and gave advice on my papers anytime I needed it.
This profesor is very easy going. But dont expect this to be a walk in the park. If you enjoy english and really want to improve your writing then this is the professor for you. he is very willing to help you on your work just ask him. - Zaibatsu
He's a cool guy. He has strict deadlines but other than that...He is always in his office, will help you out, has a format for your papers for you to follow...and pretty much is just a fun teacher (if you take him get to know him he's funny)
If you are taking the class just to fulfill a requirement and are not concerned with what you learn, then its a fine class to take. However, if you are interested in learning anything about your writing style or areas you need improvement in, do not take this class. The only thing you will learn is how important margins are to him. Nothing more.
If you go to class everyday, and actually listen to him, he tells you exactly how to write your papers. If you are struggling he will help if you ask. All Comps have strict due dates. You can't escape it. They are hard, because they teach basics you need for almost all your other classes. Welcome to Life.
He is very good at teaching and has deadlines you must adhere to. He is a very fair, helpful teacher. However the ACC guidelines stink and dont allow for freedom when it comes to grading "the C test" then 2 more papers it frankly is horrible way of grading. He even told me I should of had an A but received a B as there was no time for an A..CRAP
Not a bad prof. Tells you exactly what he wants on each paper. If you follow along, you'll do well. I enjoyed his lectures. He knows his stuff.
I used to like writing...
I wouldn't even recommend this teacher to people I dislike. He wrote "this paper was a waste of my time" on my first paper and refused to grade it. I was forced to drop(only class ever) because he wouldn't accept my paper. I'm currently retaking Comp2 this time with honors and the top ENGL prof(O'Connell) and I haven't had to revise a single paper.
Mr. Arevalo is very matter of fact. Sometimes he doesnt show up for class, but he tells you exactly what he expects and when things are due. Consider the due dates on the syllabus to be set in stone.
Professor Arevalo is a nice guy. Sometimes he cancels class, and after a long drive that is irritating. He is helpful and prompt with emails. Make appt for office hrs. There are in-class assignments, "journals", homeworks, 4 papers with one week revisions-up to one letter grade. Take C test early so u dont have to scramble. Recommend.
Very smart and funny as hell.
very funny and laid back. always lets class out early
This teacher is a waste of time. He comes to class late almost every class, talks for a few minutes and then lets you go early. He doesn't show that he cares about his students. He gave me a D on every paper I wrote. I wrote my papers with the help of another college english teacher. He counted off for stapling my paper in the wrong place.STAY CLEA
never on time, cancels class frequently, tells you how to write a paper, then when you write it exactly the way he wants it, tells you that you didn't follow the guidelines, pompous, arrogant, doesn't use blackboard, doesn't follow department protocol... he is funny, but in a cocky way. don't take him for any english class.
Great teacher. I absolutely loved him. I took him for Comp I and II. As long as you follow his giudlines EXACTLY you will be fine. He literally tells you every single thing you need to put in your paper so just listen and you'll do fine.
Great professor! Very laid back. Usually late to class, lets you out early alot. Tells you EXACTLY what to write on a paper with very clear guidelines...how many paragraphs, what quotes to use, etc. If write what he says he will give you an A. Lets you rewrite first 2 papers. Attendance for quizzes, only counts 12 of 15. Would def take him again.
The best professor I have ever had. Tells exactly what you need in your papers, if you are unclear visit him in his office hours and well help you write it. Likes things just so, but the things he asks aren't so difficult to do. Probably the funniest most interesting professor I have ever had.
Amazing professor! Has very clear instructions for what he wants on each exam. Walks you through every paragraph, and exactly what needs to be included in each paragraph. If you take good notes, you will get an A in this class without a problem. He lets you revise the first 2 exams for one letter grade higher. Also has very interesting lectures!
Prof Arevalo tells you want he wants, and if you do exactly that you won't have a problem passing. He does assign 10-15 journals--story passages you read and then answer questions about--, and 12-13 homework assignments. There is one oral presentation that takes about 2 minutes to complete. Revisions ONLY on the first 2 papers
Arevalo is a good professor. He tells the class exactly what he wants to see in the papers. The students who can take detailed notes and follow instructions are prone to do well in his class.
He says exactly what he wants, and it can make or break you depending on how much attention/notes you take. He is a very cool prof, and I really enjoyed his class even though some of the papers were hard. He does have journals and reading assignments with quizzes, but they were easy as long as you read. I would recommend him for english!
I don't know what everyone is talking about. Prof A was awesome! If you attend class and take notes, he tells you exactly what he wants to see in your papers. I took him for comp I and II. He had fun stories and was helpful in giving authors and titles so you didn't have to buy book.
Professor Arevalo is an awesome teacher. He explains everything thoroughly, and always is there after/before class to help. He tells you exactly what to write in your papers. You have to be an idiot to make less than a B.
I love Professior Arevalo I really dont why people dont like him cause he is the best all you have to do is follow the outline that he gives you. And he is really good at working one on one with you if you need help. He has fun storys to share as well.
He is a great professor, and goes by the outline he gives you. He will let you know exaclty what he wants in your paper, and will even give examples. AWESOME TEACHER. take his class!
Good Professor! Helps out as much as he can. Come to class and do the homeworks and journals.
If you do not keep up on everything, you will fail. He may seem pretty cool at first, but he's completely strict. If you miss turning in a paper you will automatically fail the class.
Always late horrible
He doesn't teach anything, just like comp 1 with different stories. Usually late for class and always running in and out. Too strict considering I am learning nothing
He tells you exactly want he wants. You have to work hard and follow his time lines, if not you'll fail. But if you are willing to work, It's a pretty enjoyable class.
Worst Prof ever. I have never dropped a class till I meet him.
he grades his papers more off the format requirements more than the ACTUAL paper. from the "importance" of margins to having the staple the way he wants it..? he didnt "teach" anything. very disappointed by his effort to be an actual instructor.
Demanding class but if you follow instructions easy B
There are only two things to do in his class: #1 FOLLOW THE FORMAT #2 SUBMIT YOUR PAPERS ON TIME. That's all you need to know. The class is fun, interesting, and easy. I got a B but that's just because I was slacking.
There are only two things you need to know: #1 Follow his FORMAT religiously, and #2 Submit your papers ON TIME. His class is fun and relatively easy. I got a B but that's just because I slacked.
Professor Arevalo was an excellent teacher. he was pretty demanding and kind of anal about how the essay should be outlined. but pretty easy class all around
Arevalo's a wonderful teacher. His classes are short, and he never holds you longer then he feels neccessary, which means you'll be getting out of class early most of the time. I got a good solid B, and as long as you pay attention to the essay format (which he thoroughly explains), you'll do fine. I highly reccommend him, he is a great teacher.
One of the best professors at ACC. Especially for comp 1
He was a great professor! He is EXTREMELY specific on format and due dates, but if you follow them you'll do well. He explains everything well, and gets back to you very fast. I would take from again.
Tough grader.
Not completely clear on all assignments and was sometimes confusing, otherwise he was very good. he was a fair grader on all essays and was very straight forward on when assignments would be due.
Tough grader. Not completely clear on all assignments & was sometimes confusing, otherwise he was very good. he never holds you longer then he feels neccessary. grades his papers more off the format requirements more than the ACTUAL paper.Doesnt actually teach anything. Just tells you what he wants in your paper. Don't take. had to drop his class
He was my favorite professor of the semester. He could not have been more clear about what he wanted.Workshop before every paper is due so that you may get his feedback.Keep up with small tasks for folder and follow directions and will be fine!My friend who sat next to me also made an A.Anyone who said he isn't clear is crazy!! Take for sure!!comp 1
He is extremely anal about how he wants you to write your papers. Had always done well in English with A's and his class was a struggle. Word of advice, record his lectures. If you are looking for an easy class do not take.
It took me a while to figure out that he really doesnt care about what you write about as much as the structure of the essays. Follow his outlines and you'll be fine.
This dude was easy. Made an A+ on every paper. Did no hw or journals and still pulled an A. First two papers you get to revise even if you mess it up. The third paper is hard but not to bad and the 4th is just plain easy. Take this guy.
RUN FAST AND RUN FAR. His assignments are unclear, and asking for clarification doesn't get you too far. He's apparently impossible to please. I'm learning plenty in his class about how to use obscure functions on my word processor, but not squat about English composition.
Does not teach anything. Wish I had taken a different instructor. Only grades on format not quality. Does not let you make corrections on your papers.
Brash and his way or the highway. I was having a computer issue and my paper wouldn't submit in the right format. I contacted him and he let me know my paper was now late and he would not accept it...which meant I was going to fail the class. I withdrew.
I feel like this professor has not taught me anything. I am taking his class online and in comparison with my other distance learning teacher, he is not really a teacher. He gave a list of assignments and due dates and his only "teaching" would be the comments he leaves on the assignments upon grading them, which only offer criticism.
Don't choose this professor. He will make you drop the course by failing you. He does not want to work with you. Overall, he's a horrible English teacher. He will waste your money and time.
VERY TOUGH grader. His way or the highway. His comments on papers if you don't do too well are very insulting. He tells you what he wants, and even if you do it, it's still not good enough. Wouldn't reccommend him to anybody.
Professor Arevalo was great! I enjoyed his class. If you just read the stories, go to class and follow his outlines for the essays then you will do fine!
This is a good teacher right here. Makes the essays so easy with his outlines. If you need to take English and don't want a difficult class, I recommend this one.
Great professor, just make sure you're decent at writing essays before you sign up. As long as you follow his directions exactly you should be fine.
Pretty easy and easy going class. Kind of anal retentive about a couple things but he will let you know what they are. Follow the outline and get an A.
This teacher is a horribly difficult grader. If you're just trying to get your prerequisites done don't take him. He made us turn in our second essays before he graded our first ones. He posted a deadline extension on blackboard and emailed us saying to ignore it, but never took it off Blackboard, I'm lucky I check my email daily.
He demonstrates a complete lack of care for his students. He sounds angry in emails, even if it's a simple question. He's belittling and rude and makes you feel stupid. I had a 4.0 until I took this class, and I'm not great at English, but I'm not terrible. I got a C on one essay, he said it was a great paper, but I used "poor syntax" and got a C
This is too hard of a class from a teacher that clearly doesn't care. Nitpicks papers down to a C
Really just terrible, he was rude and unhelpful, graded too hard. Literally sarcastic in emails. I can't express how bad an idea it is to take this class.
I took his 8-week DIL class. Professor Arevalo's response time via email is excellent. As long as you follow his formats and have the grasp of written English that you should have by the time you graduate High School, you'll do fine.
The best! Read the stories and have quizzes and journals over it the next day. Essays he goes over into detail about what he wants. He is not hard to please! Take him!!
STAY AWAY FROM THIS GUY!! This is one of the most horrible professor's at ACC. If you don't want t waste your time or your money, then don't take this guy.
This is an excellent professor. Make sure and follow his outlines exactly and you should do well in his class. He is very fair when it comes to grading. Would recommend him to anyone.
I took English 1 & 2 with him and highly recommend him. As long as you complete all the assignments and follow his EXACT instructions and outlines, you will do very well in the class. Make sure all assignments are submitted as word documents or you won't receive credit. He does not accept late work. Follow his instructions and you will do great.
Tried the 8 week online course, brutal. He will fail you if you miss an essay deadline, only have a 48 hour window to submit any work, and have to wait a week and a half to submit ANYTHING. Even though I had been in constant contact, and submitted my drafts, I just completely forgot to turn in my essay. I understand it's my fault, but c'mon!
Better have a crystal clear understanding of the topic of his papers. Any misinterpretation of what he wants will cause you to fail.
I have not had a pleasant experience with this professor. He does not help his students. He does not accept late work under any circumstances, doesn't matter if someone has died or if you were in a car accident and can provide proof. His response is to speak with the school about dropping the class Do not recommend him to anyone
Prof. Arevalo is a clear and straight forward teacher. He says precisely what he expects of his students the first day, but is not a difficult teacher and offers plenty of time and aid IF you ask for it. Class discussion about story analysis is interesting and engaging. Essays are well explained and structured for students during class. :)
Great Professor, basically tells you what to put in your essay the day he assigns it. Also, he assigned stories that I enjoyed reading (with an exception of 1 or 2 stories.) I didn't buy the textbook, I just looked up every story online and read it--DONT BOTHER BUYING THE TEXTBOOKS
He's a very laid back guy, funny at times. His assignments are easy if you're good at writing. Gives good feedback. You do need your books. There's only one group project. Easy A.
He's a very laid back guy, funny at times. His assignments are easy if you're good at writing. Gives good feedback. You do need your books. There's only one group project. He's very strict on assignment punctuality. He lets you know exactly what he wants on his papers.
Essays are long. The key to getting As on them is to be there when he goes over the paper. Write what he says because it will take the guess work out of analyzing the stories. Take advantage of his workshop where he reads over your work for feedback. Read the stories because there is a quiz on all of them
I took engl 2332: ancient literature online and absolutely loved it. Prof is very clear on what he expects and if you put in the time you will succeed. would recommend taking! i found the textbook to be very necessary
Prof. Arevalo is very straight forward with what he expects. Answered all of my emails very quickly. I took a 5 week summer class and it didn't feel to overwhelming for how fast the class was moving. Keep up, the class is NOT self paced. Due dates every couple of days. All writing assignments. Reasonable grader. No late work. Would recommend.
Unclear about grades, didn't mention that some allusions were worth almost 20% of grade. I didn't see it until I checked my grades on Blackboard. This might have been okay, except that instructions for the allusions were unclear. Didn't respond to a single email. When I did decipher the instructions on my own, he graded fair. I do not recommend!
Best English Teacher! Easy Class, the only way you will fail is if you do absolutely nothing or like my friend , forget to take your departmental exam. Otherwise no complaints. he is a cool dude.
For someone genuinely interested in classic literature, Arevalo's class is absolutely worthless. Expect to gloss over excerpts of great works and have the professor provide shallow lectures that make genius works sound insufferably boring. These hollow lectures dominate class time, leaving no room for discussion or critical thought. Easy A, though.
He is a terrible professor and won't teach but he will expect outstanding essays. So if you are amazing at wrighting essays go ahead and take this class. If not, don't even think about taking this class you will waste your time.
All reading & essays. Only lectures are on readings & essay requirements. Edit & review your papers extensively. Can rewrite first 2 essays. Good feedback/ response to emails, etc. Essay outlines are clean cut- take advantage of his workshops, they helped a lot. Take time on essays & take notes on all lectures. Overall decent professor.
Arevalo is one of those professors that grade harshly over the quality of your essays. Although he gives you essay guidelines, MAKE SURE that your interpretations of the guideline are consistent with his. If you write what it tells you to write, do MLA correc and you grammar check it in the learning lab, the worse you can get is a B on the papers.
I thought he was a good teacher. Homework consists of reading a short story from the book (usually are pretty short), and taking a short quiz over it the next class period. He goes over the essays the day he assigns them, and literally tells you exactly what he wants almost sentence by sentence, so if you take really good notes you'll make an A.
Super straight forward and simple course. Its all laid out before you to complete with no questions needed. Great reading choices and appropriate assignments. Not reading or homework heavy. Minimal response. Made it easy to appreciate the course while working full time and taking other courses. Would take another course by Arevalo again.
Arevalo is a great professor--instructions for assignments were clear, and as long as you meet the requirements for assignments, he gives you full points. I didn't even have to take his final exam because I had enough points for an A by the end of the semester. Quizzes over stories are so easy. And low key, he's attractive for an older professor.
I took his World Literature class over the summer. It was not difficult because I kept on top of the reading. You have small assignments due once every 2 days with bigger assignments spread throughout. If you stay on top of the reading and do as he says, you'll be jsut fine.
I really enjoyed taking his class. I thought his writing assignments were clear and overall it was an easy A. I recommend him for online english literature.
The layout of the course is very simple: complete 13 writing assignments (ten two-page analysis papers and three 5-part allusions.) The professor grades almost purely on adherence to his policies as laid out in the syllabus. He does not accept late work or work turned in early. Be very aware of the syllabus requirements and you will do fine.
Worst Professor ever. Please do not take his class. He expects that we are all English majors who can write brilliant essays just the way he wants them to be written. Any other interpretation or analysis of any literary work which does not match his, will be considered wrong! He is so condescending & does not help students even if you go ask.
He rarely lectured, we watched movies and class was usually just "group discussion" You're graded on Allusion Papers that he HARDLY explains. The class is a joke, he's incredibly condescending, will fail you for missing class and will not accept ANY late work. Find prof Coe-hes hard but you will actually learn something from him.
For those that complained about not accepting late work, it was stated that it wasn't accepted in the syllabus. Professor Arevalo is 'exceptionally' available to any student that reaches out to him. So are the skills labs on campus. His class is a very obtainable A if you just discipline yourself to do the work on time.
Very particular about how he wants things done and very strict about it. Does not accept late work under any circumstances and if you miss the deadline/get a failing grade on 1 essay, you automatically fail the class. Responds to emails quickly. Very nitpicky with essays and makes you buy the most recent book edition, so no money-saving available.
Good professor. Like everyone says he is also very picking on how he wants your essays to look like but he also tells you this the first day so you know what your getting into. His stories that he assigns are quite good and the journals are very good also just do them the day they are assigned as they arent due until after thanksgiving.
You will have to read a lot of stories in his class and then take a quiz after each one. Don't skip the readings it wont help you. He is a great teacher though and loves to crack a few jokes every now and then.
I took Am Lit as an online 8 week class. There's a lot of reading and with a short term, be prepared for the assignments to come due real fast. He was always quick to respond to any questions I had and on assignments gave helpful feedback for why points were deducted.
I took the online 8 week course and it was a ton of work in a short amount of time (as expected) but the professor laid it all out in the Syllabus. Biggest issues: Professer is insanely slow to grade - this is huge in an 8 week course as you don't know where you stand most of the time Grades a little hard for it being a entry Lit class
Attendance is not mandatory, but if you skip class you'll miss quizzes which will affect your grade. He does not issue any tests (except the mandatory department exam) and instead relies on papers and quizzes. If you show up to class and do what he tells you you'll get an A.
You read about 10-12 short stories and then each class take a short 5-question quiz thats super basic that you could just use spark notes for if you really wanted to. You get a journal for each, he answers the questions in class and explains in great detail what he wants in an essay, basically writes it for you. All you have to do it show up andtry
By all means do not take this professors class. Just reading the syllabus i knew i was setting myself up for failure ( first red flag) . He makes the rudest comments on all the work that is turned in even though you get an ok grade.(second red flag). And lastly i am not sure if he knows this but we are not all English majors. Long story short RUN!
He's a good English professor. He makes everything very clear and to the point. He also has a sense of humor. The only problem is that he is a very tough grader. It's an ENGL 1302 class, sure, but the professor is really tough about how "the story means this" and "this is what the author is trying to say". Very little room for outside thinking.
Fun class with a professor that want's you to leave the class able to write well rather than simply write to pass. Not as hard as others have made it out to be if you follow the instructions that he spends half the class giving out to make sure that everyone actually understands what he wants. Follow the prompt and you'll get an A.
Sets you up for Failure
Okay, so, this Professor will berate other students. He goes up in front of the class, tells you "what not to do , but not what to do"? As he is telling you what not to do, he is berating other students. If I could do more to get people to not take this class, I would.
Meme's, Meme's, and Meme's, his class activities are mostly thesis papers. For a quote unquote good thesis, it just has to be simple. Just look at a headline in a newspaper or a" news piece" on Facebook. No insight or rational thought required just any simple-quasi-rational meme, for a good grade.
Primarily this man is not a "writer" as he is published nowhere. He may have a degree in literature, but if your not published by anyone, other than the internet, you are not a writer. If you are not a writer then you can't teach others to write, because your not a writer. This class is the University equivalent to the blind leading the blind.
If you find yourself in this editors mitts, leave immediately, drop the class. He explains the assignment, dismisses class , everything is done at home, and through email and various writing guides (MLA), exhausting. You'll end up explain more about writing to him than vice versa. He does answer emails though, so there is that.
This class is off to say the least, the professor as well. He can't or won't explain himself, dig into a writing guide, most work is outside of class, you have to contact him all the time, due to his nitpicking. As others have stated in comments below, he isn't actually a writer, he's an editor, and not a good one.
Wish the class could be better. It's a headache not because of the papers, it's the professors taste in novels. I've read all of this in High School.
This class is ... awful, don't take it. It's not hard, it drawn out any he has no knowledge about anything outside his syllabus, including his issued stories. I'm speaking about the history of these stories.
This class was Awful. He doesn't give you a chance to even do good. He doesn't teach at all. He doesn't go outside his syllabus. If your looking to get your GPA down he is your guy
Hilarious, apparently, Professor Arevalo isn't even an editor. His resume is posted on the ACC website. The only actual experience he has is teaching, that is it. Never was an editor or a writer, oh brother. He is not an authority on anything, especially writing. He has read a few classics, and is a grammarist, and that is all.
I didn't care for this professor because the stories we were required to read were usually inappropriate. He told us how he wanted our papers written, giving us a specific format. We had frequent workshops. He was available right after class to answer questions, but would leave early during office hours. He answered his email quickly.
He clearly does not know what and how to grade papers for a normal English 2 class. He graded papers like they are AP worthy. I have always been an A student and this was my first B. You will have quizzes almost everyday in class and most of the time you will leave early since he does not like teaching. Beware of papers. He will grade super harshly
Hes very inflexible with formatting and is not afraid to give a failing grade based on his mood. His feedback and general demeanor is super condescending. Dont take this class if you care about your gpa.
I got a B. So many journals, and papers to write and material to cover. He gives good feed back. Take adavantage of the online tutoring and study lab, you can pass. I used the online help for last paper, tutor accepted he didnt but his feedback made complete sense. Smart guy, if you want the challenge to be a better writer, take his class.
I was two weeks into a summer semester and had one assignment due. I made one tiny mistake and got dropped from the class before I could even turn in one paper. He is extremely harsh with this class for whatever reason. Do yourself a favor and pick another teacher.
Although the class was 9 weeks long, he assigned all 14 papers within four weeks and two days. There was a paper due every 2 or 3 days. Tough grader with little constructive feedback.
Liiiiiiiiiiiiterally avoid taking a class with this professor like your life depends on it. Taking this class for university credit and have never struggled with a literature course in my life. Close to failing this class for no clear reason whatsoever -- I have completed every assignment fully. ???tf Grading is terribly unclear and subjective.
Just finished his summer class and the class was online. Avoid if you can't be responsible enough to do the work on time no late work accepted at all. All assignments are simple; should know how to write if you passed ENG1&2. As long as you can manage your time and read his instructions carefully you will get a 95-100% on all assignments.
THE WORST. Instructors like this shouldn't be offered online teaching as you need in-person help to decipher his grading style. Reasons for point deductions are valid, but the amount is atrocious. Nobody's majoring in Eng Comp, we need this for a prereq satisfaction. Don't waste your money dropping and retaking with a better professor.
Professor Arevalo is a very helpful and understanding professor! He has optional meetings where you can discuss your paper and he can give you face to face feedback! He gives short stories to read and quizzes to take once you are in class but it is not hard. You also have journals due at the end of the semester but do majority of them in class!
There are quizzes every class, but they are really easy if you do the reading. The journals are gone over in class as well. Definitely not a difficult class if you do the work. He tells you exactly what he expects for each paragraph. As long as you follow directions you're good. Take advantage of his optional office hours he gives great feedback.
Prof Arevalo is one of my favorite professors ever! He has very clear grading criteria, and when grading the papers mainly focuses on the ideas written about and grades your overall understanding of the book/poem and device assigned, versus being picky about grammar or typos. There was a lot of reading, but it is a lit class, and definitely doable.
Took Brit Lit online over the summer. Very clear guidelines and fair grading. Didn't seem like he put too much effort in to the class seeing as it was a summer online class so once you get in the swing of things it's an easy A.
The online class was relatively easy. Just follow the instructions and you'll be fine. He is rather hard about really little things. Missing a few sentences? Write some tiny detail kind of vague/unclear? Automatic B pretty much. Although you have a lot of time for each assignment, if you didn't turn it in, automatic zero, no questions asked.
I felt that he was super clear of his expectations for each asgmt. and was straight forward about the way he would be grading them. The class is easy as long as you pay attention to detail and respect the guidelines he sets for the essays. Hes good about clarifying the readings in lecture and answers student questions thoroughly. I enjoyed it :)
Many have already provided an excellent list of problems with this Professor, all I will tell you is he is NOT someone you want to have, avoid his classes for your own health and grades.
Professor Arévalo is the worst professor ever. He doesnt teach a thing just gives you homework and thats all. He comments your essays but he is so ignorant by the way he comments. Literally the worst teacher ever. Teachers like this shouldnt be teaching.
Professor Arevalo is the worst professor I ever had. He doesn't teach, he just post the hw and expects you to do it just like that. He doesn't like to be bothered. He is not understanding. He takes so long to grade and treats you like you don't know how to write or you're confusing but he is the one confused.
Provides almost no criteria for writing your paper. Allows zero flexibility for assignments. Provides opinionated feedback opposed to actual editorial information. The recent reviews are too accurate, worst professor to date.
i liked that he's quick to answer emails, and even though he's not necessarily the nicest, he's really clear about what he expects. his feedback is specific, and as long as you're following the format of what he's looking for you'll be good to go :)
This teacher is awful. When it comes to grading essays, his grading is completely subjective and he is RIDICULOUSLY picky. I have always been a great writer, and many of my previous English teachers in my AP and honors classes would remark at how great a writer I am, but this is my first B I have EVER received in an English class. Don't take him.
This professor is AWFUL. When my class asked for help he just asked us if we had watched his video and when he gives feedback he continues to point to his video instead of giving any helpful feedback. He tells us what what he did wrong but not why it is wrong or how to fix it.
In all my years of taking English courses, I'm disappointed to say this Professor was the least helpful! Not only is this Professor very biased and picky with how he wants you to write your papers, but he is a heavy grader and nitpicks at what doesn't follow his expectations. I would not recommend this class!
His expectations were very clear and the assignments weren't difficult. You definitely have to read and the textbooks were not cheap you have to get 2 textbooks. However, he grades very heavy on essays, journal entries are easy. on all my essay's I got a C. He is very picky. I usually write pretty good now i feel insecure in my writing
I was nervous signing up for this class at first. The ratings on here didn't look great, but despite that the grading is a little hard, he is very kind & willing to help with feedback. He is quick at email responses & gives very helpful insight that will be useful for improvement in the class. Be ready to work, but it was worth it. Good professor.
I did the 5-week summer class. He's very thorough in his assignment descriptions which makes this class easy. There's a reading and a response due every 2 days and he does not let you turn things in early. NO LATE WORK is accepted. the class is manageable but as a teacher, he doesn't give much feedback or engage with the students much.
I've never in my life had essays graded so harshly by any professor ever. Being a harsh grader would be one thing but beyond that he's just a bad teacher. All his assignments are essentially just meaningless busy work. I can honestly say I learned absolutely nothing from this class, it was a huge waste of time that I wouldn't wish upon anyone.
I've never even gotten remotely as bad of grades from any other teacher ever as I did from this guy. To make that even worse his assignments are nothing more than just busy work. I can honestly say that I learned literally nothing from this dude. His class was entirely a waste of time that I wouldn't wish on anyone. DO NOT TAKE
The caliber of his grading could be justified if at a four year university for an english major... not this class. Likely doesn't revisit his online material and it's overall just boring and busy work.
Prof. Arevalo is picky about the content he wants in his papers; some of the guidelines he sets for his papers need to be more precise. You cannot start working 48 hours before class. I suggest picking a different instructor.
Chris is incredibly pedantic when it comes to grading assignments. If you do not do everything his EXACT way or say every step you took to turn the assignment in -- expect to be given a zero. He has a "No early work" policy -- where he will outright decline anything turned in earlier than 48 hours before the due date. Gives little useful feedback.
Professor Arevalo is easily and readily accessible online via email. He is down to earth and quickly responds to emails. He is very considerate in his responses.
My first impression of Arevalo was utter dread, I will admit. He comes off as very jaded and very strict. But! All you need to pass his class is common sense. Read his instructions, which are VERY clear and simple, do what he says, and you will pass with ease. Yes, he is not very forgiving and has no late policy... just do the work and you'll pass.
My first impression was utter dread, I admit. He comes off in his syllabus as jaded and strict. But all you need is common sense to pass, and he's actually quite funny. His instructions are VERY clear. Yes, he is not forgiving and has no late policy unless you clear with him prior, but his syllabus is simple and engaging.
He is a very straight-forward professor, and clear about what he looks for in your papers. I highly recommend anyone taking an english course to take him, you will learn so much. Although I will admit could be a little challenging, but thats honestly what made this course so interesting. Arevalo also provides GREAT feedback and is helpful overall.
Avoid at all costs, especially if you're an English major. He provided no instruction whatsoever. I mean he literally didn't teach. The entire course is assigned readings and papers on those readings according to a given format. You don't find out if you understand or not until you get your grade. If you're late by even a moment, you get a 0.
Tough grader but no lectures whatsoever. If you don't follow the sample that is given, you will be downgraded. He doesn't teach you anything. Just a bunch of assignments and you get zero if you turn in late work. DO NOT TAKE.
I've seen many other reviews where other students say this professor doesn't do lectures and I disagree. His lectures are interesting and informative and he basically walks you through how to take this class. I think the disconnect is with the online classes, I'd highly recommend taking this class in person. It's an easy class if you're engaged.
I thought the class was good until the final was given on a Thursday between 8am and 3pm. The online class that only had assignments due by 10pm on the given day. He announced that it could be worked on a day before but could only be turned in during that given window. Ridiculous for a completely asynchronous class to have a final due at that time.
Does not 'teach' a single thing. His entire pedagogy is based on degrading the content of student submissions. He can be helpful if you come to revision sessions, but other than that, he expects students to have already mastered the material before beginning the course. Do not take if you are looking to learn anything.
Not good at all
The negative reviews are warranted. His syllabus contains conflicting and vague information. It does have information on how the final grade is calculated, but it has zero information on how he grades the actualassignments. He has strict deadlines, no guidelines, and grades tough. He does ZERO teaching and only assigns numerous readings and essays.
The professor's style takes some getting used to, but if you engage with the material and utilize tools like unstuck ai, you can do well. Textbooks are a must, and essays are graded rigorously, but the class isn't overly difficult.
this professor seems quite jaded and strict in his ways. i considered myself a good writer but in his terms, i am not whatsoever. turned in all journals and essays on time, received Ds on every single essay. he provides plenty of feedback that is quite daunting. i am a science major so maybe i'm way out of my league here…
I've seen lots of negative reviews for this professor and he's honestly not as bad as you'd think. I frankly enjoyed the class, but there's only one thing that will ensure a good grade in his English 1302; do your work. All you have to do is do your readings, take some notes, and follow the guidelines for his papers to a tea and you'll secure an A.
Arevalo is tough. I struggled with his no late work policy due to my ADHD. That being said, he respects dedication and if you try your best, follow his instructions and show a willingness to meet with him, take criticism and improve, he is responsive and quite incredible at his job. Active students, look no further. Passive students, don't bother.
He is not nice.
Does not have clear grading criteria , the course also lack material. Very tough grading system based on nothing Just reading books and writing essays. Do not take this class if you are not a mind reader.
Tough grader . lack of instruction . Not clear grading standards .
This professor isn't concerned with teaching, just correcting when his poorly written instructions weren't followed. He gives samples of work in contradiction to what he wants. His corrections are also filled with typos and poor grammar, and he teaches English. Avoid his classes if possible!
I loved Arevalo. He has clear expectations set for every assignment and his class is easy to follow. He is a tough grader but so long as you put in the work and use the rubrics you will do good. I took a second course of his due to how easy the course is and how much I like him. He is easy to reach outside of class there are many times connect.
You work all semester just to let one exam determine if you pass or fail the class. You could have an A in the class and still fail
Has a pretty ridiculous pass/fail exam at the end of the course, could have an A+ and still fail. Other than that I would say he is a great professor. Vast majority of your grade is determined by major essays, but offers optional zoom classes where he literally edits your drafts to get max credit. Assuming you attend these, the course is easy.
