Quiz once a week, four tests. Very anal, sticks by every rule. Hard class but if you do the almost 100 practice problems you might pass.
intense little man who demands 200% from his students. give it and you will learn more than you ever thought possible about all things chemistry.
he is an excellent teacher who is willing to give 100% of his time outside of class to help students. He is one of the most understanding and helpful teachers I have ever had. it's chemistry, but he makes it as understandable and easy as possible.
Um!! if you get him, change your schedule. He makes the class very hard for other students! Avoid at all costs!
Dr. Bender is the professor at USCS that cares the most about student success. He is always around for help and will go out of his way to help students that are willing to do hard work and succeed. You acutally learn the material.
THIS TEACHER IS THE BEST CHEMISTY TEACHER EVER. IF YOU TAKE NOTES IN CLASS AND UNDERSTAND HOW TO GET THE ANSWERS YOU WILL PASS THE CLASS. AND YOU MUST DO THE HOMEWORK PROBLEMS IN THE BOOK B/C THAT IS WHAT THE TEST ARE BASED ON. HE IS A VERY GOOD TEACHER
Bender is so cool. I think he is adorable too. he really knows how to teach well. If you ahve trouble you can go to his office and he'll help you out. He is one of the best teachers at this school
It is very fast paced and he doesn't even speak with clarity. The way he talks to you make you not want to answer questions, and he is very rude at times.
really smart teacher but he is really really hard. If you don't have a strong background in chemistry then you should take a different teacher and a lower class
Dr. Bender is a Great Teacher! He is REALLY helpful outside of class, but you must go to his office for help! Is willing to help anyone who comes by. Please note that Chemistry is a hard subject within itself, but Dr. Bender makes it fun! Plus I found him to be cute!
Very good teacher. Class is tough but it's a tough subject. Dr. Bender is very energetic and makes chemistry interesting which is hard to do. He does call on you in class so you have to pay attention. Weekly quizzes are pretty easy since he tells you exactly what is on them. DO THE HW!
Didnt like the way he taught. Speaks too fast and has an attitude problem. Try to stay away if you can.
Horrible teacher.. seems cool at first but unreliable.. ignores questions, ill prepared, self-contradicting, confusing, doesn't seem to understand what he is saying, etc.
He knows his stuff. The class is hard but you will do good if you do all of the homework assignments.
He's well versed with the subject and knows wat he's doing. He's hard, but chem is a hard science. He's very prompt abt grading and gives study guides 4 evry single test. Once u get used to what he expects of you, u'll be fine. Just b prepared to work hard. DO THE HOMEWORK!!
A bright and well versed teacher. If you pay attention to what he tells you in class and put forth some effort you'll be in good shape. A generally nice guy, despite what some might say out of spite when they have been lazy or caught cheating.
Smart teacher knows about the subject but definately picks random students for problems and kind of makes you feel dumb if u don't know how to do them, but if you do the HW and Pay attention you will be fine.
I thought Dr. Bender was a great instructor...by far my favorite of all of my chemistry classes at usc-upstate. sure, he can be a little "rude" or "smart-mouthed" at times, but so can everyone else. He really knows the subject and will help students if they only take the time to ask.
Awesome professor who is very interesting and knowledgeable about the subject. His tests are very hard though and he can at times make you feel a bit dumb. But he's a freakin genius and he's teaching a very hard subject, so its not that hard to feel stupid in his class. Nice guy though and he definitely knows his stuff.
He is a great professor despite what some people say. He is very nice and is always willing to help you when you need it. He really knows his stuff and can explain it very clearly, but most of all he loves teaching chemistry and it makes the class more fun. His tests are kind of hard but if you study and do the homework you will do fine.
He will call you out in class!
Girls need to flirt with this hottie to get good grades, overall he is definitely a ****bag!
Regardless of what people say, all you have to do in his class is pay attention! The homework isn't really necessary, as long as you do the sheets after each chapter. As for the tests, if you put a little effort into studying you'll have no problem! He does call people out, but who cares... if it isn't u getting it wrong, it would be someone else!
You will learn alot in this class. As far as calling people out, he has notecards that he goes through and calls on everyone the same amount of times! I found the notecards to be helpful b/c you get to participate in class and if you do get it wrong, you will be sure to remember it for the test. He even has study sessions before each test.
he is a really good teacher, even with what people say. as long as you stay on top of the material and study you will do fine. he has notecards he uses in class so you will get called on. the test arent too bad, he has study sessions before em. if you need help hes there. he loves chem and makes the class very interesting.
Okay from the first day of class you may think he is very rude. Bender is one of those professors who are there to weed out the people who shouldn't be science majors. Other than that very helpful I made a A in his clas, but I worked my ass for it. The lab for this class is actually harder than the lecture... and oh yeah, Do your homework!!!!!
HATED EVERY MOMENT OF IT!!! RUDE!!!!!!!!
He's ok. He can be kind of annoying at times.
It's intersting that people are so inadequate when describing teachers on here. Dr. Bender is particular, likes things done a certain way, & at times can be difficult. However, he's taught this class many times and knows his stuff. He's very informative and always available if needed. I HIGHLY reccommend especially if taking higher level courses
He breaks things down for you, if you need help he is always in his office. Dr.Bender is smart and hot that what makes him the best. I am so lucky that I am in one of his class this semester(Secret) so I can look at him everyday. To bad he is taken.I would give him five chile beans if I could.
Tough class but if you pay attention in lecture and do the practice problems you'll pass. very clear speaker, always avaliable for out of class help. also a great lab teacher from what i've heard. overall a great prof.
Witty, funny, makes class interesting. He breaks things down and really wants you to understand. He brings cool experiments to class to show you different reactions ... really neat. Super helpful too!!
He is quite humorous during his lecture and makes chemistry more interesting that it really is.
great professor. very knowledgable about the subject
He truly cares about his students. He is very entusiastic and I could tell that he loves his job-this was very refreshing for me. GO TO LECTURE you learn tons and it will greatly help you understand the materials. He gives out exam topics lists that are true to the test. I loved this teacher and this class. He is encouraging and positive.
Lecture is a must for success in this class. He explains the material well and is more than willing to help his students. Exams are tricky. do the homework and go to SI and you should be fine. be careful when deciding to drop. the material will only get harder and if you're still trying to learn material from chapter 3, you will be in big trouble
Great instructor. While he is overflowing with sarcasm and will not hold back on his opinions on what you may say or think, he knows how to teach a difficult subject. He's one of the main reasons I switched to a Chemistry major. :)
Really great chem professor, makes lectures crystal clear for everyone and before every lecture shows different ways you could get help if you're struggling (SI, etc). Funny and slightly sarcastic; you can tell he loves chemistry. Tests are difficult only if you study poorly for them! :) And he uses notecards to call on people in class.
He is such a great professor. Go to class, do homework questions, and go to him if you have any doubts. He is very helpful. His exam topic lists are very helpful. You will do great if you do homework and study the topics in the list.
Excellent teacher! He is by far the best one I have encountered at USC Upstate. Always helpful, organized, fair, knowledgeable, and approachable. The material is hard, but you will earn the grade you get. He is a fantastic teacher so if you get a low grade it is your own fault. Work homework problems again and again.
Incredible teacher. You can tell he is very passionate about the subject. Has a very sarcastic, dry humor about him. Really breaks down the material. However, the class is a little difficult. I cannot stress how important it is to DO THE HOMEWORK!
Amazing professor! My favorite!!
Dr. Bender does his best to make sure everyone understands. The class is tough and has a very high fail rate so you have to try! Doing homework is very helpful even though it's not mandatory. He will hold help sessions before each test but you have to bring your own questions. He made chemistry interesting and more clear.
This class is hard! Give hundreds of homework questions to go along with each chapter. Some things he say will be on chapter in the future. Good luck.! Take another teacher..
By far the best professor I've ever had! Yes it's a lot of work and tough material, but Dr. Bender helps so much! Take his lab also!! He's the best. Even though he calls on people to answer questions it helps keep you up to speed with whats going on. Strongly recommend taking him, especially if you need to take future Chem courses.
Really good teacher. you might not think so when you take his class because the material can be difficult but trust me when you take other teachers who do not cover the material as completely you will really be thankful for him.
The class is very fast-paced, but there is always plenty of help available. Examples are always gone over in class, and your lecture packet is really well put together. Take him over any other professor. He will replace your lowest exam grade with your final exam if you get a higher grade on the final. Very helpful professor, will miss him.
He is a really good teacher and makes sure you understand. He also relates topics to interesting things and doesn't bore you to death. His tests are tough but as long as you study you should do well. I would take this class again and recommend him as a Chemistry 111 professor.
Looks just like Quentin Tarantino, 1010 professor.
Chem is a hard subject but dr. bender explain almost everything. He the best teacher to take for chem 111. Chem not for everybody tho. he give 3 question quiz and like 20 question test and all are timed. u need to study everything even the first def u learn. PLZZZ GO TO SI IF YOU WANT TO PASS AND TO HIS OFFICE HOURS and do the HOMEWORK in book
I would not suggest Bender. He's a nice guy but makes everything harder than it's needed to be. I've had other chem professors and they were amazing! He calls on EVERYONE all the time so always be alert and he won't leave you alone until you get the answer right. His test are easy in the beginning but get worst! Do NOT take him!
He is a nice professor outside of class and likes to help when asked, but in class, he's a rough one. He makes fun of students because they don't understand the material. I was very bothered by the fact he makes you feel very inadequate because he has been teaching for "17 years" and you don't understand naming molecules. Class is very clear cut.
Dr Bender was awesome. Taking a chemistry class over 19 days is not easy but he was ready to take the challenge with us. His lecturers were great and very straight forward. He is super organized and provides ample practice problems. Chemistry is not easy but he made it doable. And his occasional jokes are hilarious. Caution tho he hates on crossfit
Has great organization but the material is rushed. There should be more time spent on tougher material during class. Go prepared bc he'll randomly call on students and if they answer wrong he'll make fun of them, which is unfair since the material is just being learned. Test are straight forward. Do the HW(gives few!), go to tutoring & SI to pass!
Practice is key in Dr. Bender's class. If you're not practicing problems outside of class to prepare for the test you most likely won't do well. He's very knowledgeable and helpful outside of class, make sure to come to him if something is unclear. But he is a great professor and I would definitely recommend him and would take him again!
This professor is good at teaching chem, but he belittles you. He is really, really bad at asking you questions and even when you don't know the answer, he continues to make you try at it. I once spent an entire class period sitting in silence because I didn't know the answer. He is tough at grading material. I never understood labs or their purpos
He teaches very well & makes lots of jokes. I will say this though, do the homework, he tells you its optional but it really isn't. Homework helped me make an A. His test are very difficult but he only tests on what he thought in class & nothing more. If you want to learn, take him. I wish he taught Chemistry 112, Dr. Bender is the best.
Dr Bender is great! He explains the content thoroughly and is happy to answer any questions. His tests are difficult, but he tests from the lecture notes. He calls on people throughout each class so come to class at least a little prepared. If you take a class with him, you will learn a lot!
Amazing teacher! He teaches very clearly and provides multiple resources for you to use. He doesn't take attendance but Chem111 is difficult so you will want to attend. However he calls randomly on you so you'll need to pay attention. Has a lot of quizzes, 3 tests, final, but he gives clear outlines of what will be on the test. He wears cool ties
Come to class and pay attention and when called upon, answer the questions!
Dr. Bender is one of the best professors at USC Upstate. I truly think he embodies all of the great qualities of what a great professor should be. His lectures are engaging, his exams are difficult, and yet he is very caring and concerned about how well his students do in the class. If I could take him again for upper chemistry courses I would.
You can tell that Dr. Bender enjoys teaching Chemistry, and that just makes the class more enjoyable on it's own. Dr. Bender doesn't have any surprises, he says "THIS WILL BE ON YOUR TEST/QUIZ" and it shows up on the test or quiz. Class isn't hard but you do have to pay attention. If only he taught Chem112.
Honestly if you need chemistry choose someone else. His notes are easy to follow but when it comes to the test it's COMPLETELY different. Everything is fill in the blank and none of it was covered in the notes. Bender calls on you in class and if you don't know he tries to make you look stupid in front of everyone. Don't waste time taking his class
He expects us to read ahead in his notes. He calls on everyone in class and sometimes ask really hard questions we don't know the answers to but we still have to answer them. 60% of the class this semester dropped his class because his test are HARD! Attendance is not mandatory but you NEED to go to learn the material. Be prepared to work hard.
Dr. B is an excellent professor! He is funny, always ready and willing to help, knowledgeable, dedicated, & honestly your best option when scheduling. Here's the thing; he teaches tough courses. Be sure to just skim over the notes daily (because it's a LOT of info) & always give 100% (he gives partial credit). Just work with him & you'll succeed!
I love this man.
Dr. Bender goes extremely fast on the material and would call on people during classes to answer questions! He is very knowledgable about chemistry but do the extra problems he assigns as his exams are intense. Also, go to SI if you want to pass the course, she did a great job of preparing worksheets and expanding on topics he briefly went over.
expects a lot out of you. this class is harder than it should be and this prof is the reason. he lists tons stuff you should be doing forgetting college students have other class. be prepared to attended class, read the book, watch lectures, take a lot of quizzes, four tests, hundreds of problems per chapter, go to si, and get a tutor if needed.
just awesome!
Dr. Bender is hard but it is all worth it. Be ready to watch hours and hours of lectures if you are taking his course online or in the summer. Just put the effort in and you will survive with a good grade. He was very heavy on practice and worksheets and that helped me tremendously. Dr. Bender is one professor who makes you strive for success.
Enjoyed the class. Online lecture videos w/ printable notes to follow along. Dont get behind on the videos, it makes it hard to catch up. Classes are mandatory & youre expected to arrive ontime. Classes are all practicing but I liked doing practice questions in class. It helps prepare for the test. Bender is approachable & will answer questions
Obviously knows and understands the material, however lectures are recorded and have to be watched outside of class. Expected hours of personal time for work outside of class for success. Class time was spent doing example problems as groups which was only helpful if you were already good at the material.
Great professor, daily quiz (one question), his grading was fair and offered partial credit, had to watch 40-60+ min lectures outside of class, daily in-class practice problems(with group), will have to teach yourself sometimes (Watch TheOrganicChemistryProfessor). One big flaw, he will gaslight you, a lot! Learned a lot but will not take him again
Dr. Bender was an excellent professor that went above and beyond his commitment to his students. It is a tough class but that is chemistry. Put your shoulder to the wheel and you will leave successful and vastly more prepared for the rest of your college career.
Make sure you go to class and watch the lecture videos before hand, especially if math/chemistry isn't your strong point
I love Dr. Bender, I had him over the summer for Chem 111 and I feel like he truly was here for us and wanted us
Difficult class with a great professor that wants you to do well.
This class was hard. You have to watch a lot of long lectures before class and it was hard to fit them in sometimes, especially since the material was difficult. He never said it, but he graded on some sort of curve because I would always have a much higher grade than was reflected by the points deducted. A lot of work in this class.
he's a funny dude and nice ties, but he might show up in my nightmares
I got a high A in this class and at first, I thought I would get through with a C. Watch his videos, do the textbook problems, and just practice till you get sick of it and you'll get an A. I recommend practicing with in-class problems too. Bender is very smart, and people think he's full of himself but he genuinely wants you to do well.
Not a very good professor, especially when it is for a general class like 111. He acted like we should have already known how to do this, and if you asked questions or were confused he made you feel dumb. He also is very awkward when you go into office hours and doesn't help very much at all!
I would not recommend. Unfortunately, he's unavoidable when it comes to chemistry. Very passive aggressive so if you need help don't go to his office hours because he's only going to make you feel stupid. He only likes you if you have a clear understanding of chemistry and can get good grades on the tests.
He will not try to connect with you if you are not a chemistry major or are not doing well in his class. He shows a lot of (noticeable) favoritism. He makes a big deal about going to his office hours and reaching out/asking questions, but the second you do that, he gets defensive and will not provide necessary feedback.
He was an awesome professor teaching a very difficult class. He would curve grades and he genuinely cared that you did well in his class. I would 100% take him again.
Do not take this class in the summer if you value your sanity or health. He is understanding of things at times, but don't expect to do anything outside of class work. This class should not be offered during the summer and somehow you get less time to take the exams. TAKE THIS CLASS DURING THE FALL OR SPRING.
Do NOT take this class if you want to have a decent well-being. Extremely jam packed with work and not very understanding when it comes to struggling. Expect to completely drop everything in your personal life and pull numerous all-nighters. Extremely tough grader, does not give much grace for what the class is. RUN WHILE YOU CAN!
