So hot... and he's very clear in his notes but he goes off topic a LOT... and I mean A LOT (you are warned about asking QUESTIONS, he will answer all unfortunately). He gives hard tests and says they're easy, but overall he's a really nice guy. Compared to other profs, I say he's not THAT bad.
Lectures are crystal clear. Goes off topic sometimes.. Will go crazy in a good way if you ask him about orbitals... Tests are all MC , while the midterm and exam and final are all written answers. Beware of the final.. class average was 50 but in the end, he normalized the marks by a good 10%. DO THE PRACTICE ASSIGNMENTS and dont fall behind. Gl!
For those who've took Org I, you'll see that Boddy is the son of Prof. Ogilvie, he's a little taller, younger, and enthusiastic, and also a bit harder. As with Org I, Org II is purely a practice assignment course, do them (textbook is relatively useless). His exam was surprisingly hard, but his final curve more than made up for it.
Boddy is a good prof, but if you have Flynn, it is better to switch to her section as her notes are more clearer. E nthusiastic lecturer though, like Ogilvie, but MC exams suck though.. but his midterm was written, and relatively straight forward. The final exam was written but insanely hard (50% class average). Do the assignments!
Love him. Amazing prof, extremely enthusiastic, willing to spend so much time just to make sure his students understand the material. One of my favourite profs of all time.
Great Prof; type of guy you'd have a beer with at the bar. He's as crystal clear as can be when it comes to teaching organic chemistry. His only downfall is that he teaches as if we're all chem majors, you'll see what I mean when you see the midterms & exams. He's got a real fetish for orbitals, so don't get him going on those. You've been warned.
He's a tough prof. study hard for the first midterm. it will kill you. The second midterm is super easy but the exam gets super tough again. He explains things well but his first midterm is ridiculously hard
Dr. Boddy is absolutely fantastic! I was dreaded taking Orgo II, but he made it a pleasure! His lectures are crystal-clear and actually enjoyable. His first midterm was crazy hard, but he made up for it on the second midterm and final. If you liked Dr. Ogilvie, you'll love Dr. Boddy
Great Prof. Lectures and notes are crystal clear, as are his expectations. He's teaching a difficult course, yet he makes the material as basic as humanly possible. I would definetly recommend Dr. Boddy and would offer the following suggestions: Go to class, go to the DGDs, do the ACE and assignments! Put in the hours, the grades will come
Awesome prof. Difficult material. Boring if you're not a chem major/in love with chem. Very reasonable with exam grades.
Most of the course is taught after the second midterm and expect about 4-5 mechanisms a lecture after the second midterm. Oh, and he's boring too. The course is hard either way
Great professor, the midterms and finals are all covered in the course, but he makes them appear very scary/intimidating. The first midterm was brutal for the class (~40% average) but it gets much better from there. Don't panic and don't memorize, just think everything through logically and success will come naturally.
Lectures are clear, well organized. The material seen in lectures is ok . But the material in midterms and sapling is a lot harder- often stuff that wasn't even covered.
Dr. Boddy is a great prof, his exams are just impossible. You can tell that he is really passionate about chemistry. The exam and midterms are not reflective of the course material, assignments or practise midterms in terms of difficulty. Even the stuff you thought was easy is made to be hard on the exam. Very time consuming course.
Boddy is a great prof! He is very enthusiastic and makes the 8:30am classes fun. He explains everything really well! The only issue is that Sapling assignments and midterms are unrealistically difficult! Failing average on both midterms! You can study all you want (believe me, I did), and still end up a few % away from a pass. :( Hope final is easy
He isn't as hard as people say. If you understand the concepts taught there is no reason that you won't get a good mark. He just wants you to analyze the questions he gives as opposed to memorizing ahead of time what to do. That's why he gives such confusing questions. Sappling assignments are a free 10% as well as the review exam of first year.
Although the material he TEACHES is clear and he is enthusiastic, he does not teach well for the material he tries to evaluate with. He does simple examples and do not offer enough synthesis practice, the method we are evaluated for most of the material. His exams just seem impossible (midterm 1 mostly) -huge jump from classwork!
Boddy is a great professor when it comes to explaining the material and trying to make the class enjoyable. However, beware of the midterms and exam - they were usually extremely difficult! In summary: great prof, relatively straightforward material, difficult evaluations. Throw any hopes of a good mark out the window... just pass the course!
Great teaching, engages students during class and is always willing to help. His midterms (both 1 and 2, but mostly 1) are VERY difficult. Even studying the concepts was not enough, there were things on the first midterm that we only learned later in the course! The final, on the other hand, was more fair, and reflected most of what was taught.
It's sad that this is the course that I spent the most time studying for, yet my grade was the lowest among my other courses. The Sapling and exams are NOT fair evaluations of what you learn in the course. Dr. Boddy himself is great in terms of teaching and helpfulness though.
You have about a 25% chance of passing Boddy's first midterm. GG.
LOVED Dr. Boddy's teaching, very enthusiastic in class as most people have said... however yes, his lectures are clear but they're super simple examples and explainations so when it comes to final and midterms, you're hit with very hard questions requiring lots of thought! PRACTICE LIKE THERE IS NO TOMORROW! Only way to succeed in this class~! GL
It's not that his exams are difficult - it's that they're very intimidating. he uses large molecules with many functional groups and you kinda get flustered in the exam and screw stuff up. I recommend going to his office hours and asking questions - he's pretty helpful! Try to be calm during his exams and it should be ok :)
Dr. Boddy is a really nice guy, and an awesome lecturer! His midterms and finals do require you to think hard, but they all relate back to the course material.
Great prof. He is extremely clear on all of the lecture material. He has a way of teaching that makes the most boring topics stimulating and the most difficult concepts understandable. Highly recommended.
The midterms are just too hard. Some reactions he brings we've not learned in class
Really good prof, great at explaining concepts that make chemistry easy to understand. But what he teaches is like a microscopic view of what he tests you on. Midterms were brutal, final was alright.
Great prof, his lectures are crystal clear and he always posted lots of practice. His first exam was hard on marking but the exam itself wasn't that bad. The second midterm and final weren't bad either. The molecules he uses are large but just break it down, do the practice and you'll do great. Never enjoyed chemistry till this class!
This course is a make or break for second year. And it will break you down, force you to study/learn in ways you've never thought of. Course material is fine, and his notes are great. His midterms are shockingly hard (50% avgs) but the final is doable if you grind through everything. Good luckkkkkkkkk
He's so entertaining, and he really loves both organic chem and teaching. Its possible to do really well in his class if you apply everything you know from his notes to synthesizing biopharmaceutical products for practice, and do all the assignments. But if you don't work, odds of failing are really high...but Dr. Boddy tries to keep it fun!!:)
Great prof! Orgo II is boring, but he makes it fun! The midterms are hard, but as long as you don't memorize the mechanisms and actually understand why each step is happening, and understand the theory, you should be fine. Memorize certain reagents and their products from Orgo I. Practice and you'll be fine!
To pass his class, you just gotta remember this: roundhouse kick. Now, your passing this course is guaranteed.
Great prof :) It's a hard class, but not everything can be easy. I'll miss this class.
Practice as much as you can. Organic chemistry II is a very difficult course, but it's not impossible. Boddy is very clear and friendly, but his exams can be daunting. Large molecules may throw you off, but if you calm down and think, it's really not that hard at all. If you study hard, you'll do great!
HE'S A HARD PROF! OMGOMG! :( but i love orgo chem so that's the only thing kept me going in this course
Makes the class fun, very enthusiastic, but his midterms and assignments are MUCH MORE difficult than examples he gives in class. His midterms were impossibly hard and the entire class did horribly. The final was a bit more fair, but still difficult. In the end, didn't care for a good grade, just wanted a pass (and I ended up w/ 53%). Phew!
what really pissed me off was that his office hours were always packed so it was impossible to speak with him if you had questions. he explains things clearly and his exams are somewhat difficult
Great enthusiastic prof. He's a genius and like some geniuses, he sometimes doesn't know what a second year organic chem student would consider hard. Class requires students to stay on top of assignments and mechanisms. As long as you practiced lots and knew all mechanisms like the back of your hand, break down big molecules he gives, you're good
Good prof. Pros: good lectures (clear, engaging), helpful in office hours (remarking exams/midterms, answering questions), posts podcasts. Cons: very tough midterms/exams, assignment answers often need more explanation, online Sapling assignment was really annoying to use.
As good as any prof can get in terms of making the concepts clear and interesting. The class was very challenging (alot of content covered and very difficult exams) but he does bellcurve the final marks to compensate. I would highly recommend having him as a prof for organic chemistry and I hope to have him as a prof again some time in the future.
Best professor ever. Writes extremely hard tests, but if you do the assignments and practice you should be fine. There is a lot of material covered in this class. Theres no way around it, organic chemistry is a lot of work.
He's super clear when he explains stuff, but man, those midterms were SUPER HARD. I remember the average for the review exam at the beginning of the yr was like a 50%! You just gotta work hard and pray the bell curve is in your favour. The only plus side is that he's super cute and charming.
Really good prof. He knows his stuff and is willing to help students. Midterms aren't that bad if you do the assignments.
He is a great guy and an interesting lecturer. However, the course itself is quite difficult. You need to put a lot of time in to receive a high mark. He tests you on material you have seen during the lectures but he likes to put it in a different context, so it can be challenging.
He's really clear on what he wants you to know to succeed on his tests
Fair exams, assignments were a lot easier than this exams. Very enthusiastic professor, overall good professor.
The prof is engaging but moves through the material pretty fast. Not very responsive to class needs (unlike Flynn)
Very approachable; I went to multiple office hours (this was the first prof's office hours I've been to). So far my favourite lecturer because he enjoys what he teaches and is very enthusiastic. If you look at the assignments and you'll get an A.
Great teacher and great person but exams are much harder than how he teaches in class. You really need to know things in depth to get good grades. Asks specific values on numbers as questions on exams.
He's good when it comes to conveying the material. However, he consistently makes promises he can't keep. For the 3 midterms, he would state a date when the grades would be up and they would never appear until many days after. The worst part is that we did not even receive our last midterm grade before the final today.
The course is very well organized. The lectures are entertaining and he's able to explain the concepts clearly every class. Amazing prof & amazing course. highly recommended
Read the textbook or you WILL fail. I love Boddy, he was great, but he didn't go very in depth into the material but the midterms had in depth questions that he doesn't touch on in class. He is very nice though and very helpful if you ask. Also he will give you material on your final the covered literally the day before.
Terrible exams.
Awesome lectures, great and funny guy, but his exams are really tough. The third midterm and final were brutal; not a single person got over 87% on our section's final exam... after adjustments. Study day and night, it's a very difficult course.
Tests are too hard . final was brutal. very hard professor.
worst professor. The hardest class I've ever taken, so many tests. He makes me hate biochemistry.
This course overall is a lot of work. Boddy came through for me in the end, but overall this course is not a walk in the park. Hard labs and a lot of content. MAKE SURE TO DO THE HOMEWORK. I was super lucky in the end, but this course is not easy. Sapling is a boost, so do your best to get the full 8%.
Lecturer-wise, he's not bad at all and very enthusiastic. His first two midterms were reasonable but the third midterm... brutal. There were too many long answer questions with concepts that we barely touched on. I will say that this was his first year teaching this course so he'll most likely bring down the difficulty for future years.
Dr. Boddy is clear during lectures. The last midterm and final were brutal. You have to study a lot to do well in his class. Lab content is very hard as well. Overall, a very tough course with high expectations. Use textbook and do his homework assignments.
It doesn't matter how well you do in this class if you struggle with the lab material. Got an E because failed the lab portion but did above average in all midterms. Read the chapters he assigns, pretty much memorize both sapling and blackboard assignments and even though podcasts are available, GO TO CLASS!!!!
Horrible professor.
1. GO to class (and take time in the weekend to review the podcasts) 2. Read the chapters he talks about in class after the lecture (Essential to pass a test) 3. Do the homework a couple nights it's due (ask him questions personally) 4. Make sure you know ALL amino acids and the pka's by hard and their properties 5. Pray your Lab TA is chill
He expects a lot from students and his tests are way too hard , not a good prof in general
Worst class ever. Tests are the hardest thing I've ever done, most of which contain things that were not covered in depth during class. Expects you to do most of the work on your own. Test are many. Homework is A LOT. Explains things well enough for you to understand but not in enough detail to make you even pass one of his exams. Would take again.
Very enthusiastic about his proteins, but pretty bad professor (teaching-wise). Test content did not reflect what we covered in class; he expects depth on the test but doesn't go in depth in class (and reading the textbook didn't help much either). A lot of useless sapling homework. The assignments were worthwile though. Overall I do not recommend.
Boddy is one of the best professors at UofO. Expect to put in the work (especially when you take his upper year classes). No lie, his exams are tougher than beef jerky. But, he's 100% always there for you if you need the help. He also scales the class accordingly at the end, so you end up with the mark that you WORK for.
Overall a great professor! He's very enthusiastic about the course material, making lectures pretty interesting. Tests were very fair, and generally quite easy (except midterm 3...).
Great job teaching the course!
Boddy is a great lecturer! His tests and final were extremely fair (minus the third midterm), but he curves the final and the final grades if need be. He is a bit condescending during office hours when you come with questions, but overall, he's a decent prof. Memorize the amino acids over the Xmas break and you're off to a great start in the class.
Boddy is a great guy, but is not clear at all. Intro to Biochem is tough in the first place, and then he goes and puts stuff on midterms that we never covered. 3 midterms and 1 final. Final was a lot easier since almost everyone failed the last midterm. 5% homework grade that you have to buy for 70$.. Study hard and at least 4 days before..
Imagine studying a tough subject while looking at someone who looks like Ben Affleck. yah it is hard to focus :"). class was not easy and what you learn in class was not reflected on midterms but go to DGD's. Hes really an amazing prof but the class and the course material is hard. labs are stupid you do them but have no idea whats going on
try to do your best in first 2 midterms. not a very good idea to approach him in office. He is a very good scientist, but should not be teaching honestly
Good prof, but keep up, it is possible to get a 70-80% (or higher if you put in the effort) as long as u look at past midterms and know amino acids. Doing/understand practice midterms from past. Midterm 3 was hardest, but the questions were similar to previous midterms so sometimes you just have to memorize.
Class was overall very difficult, definitely have to work hard for your grade. Dr. Boddy explains concepts very well and the textbook clears things up. Some questions don't reflect material taught in class, especially midterm 3. Lab portion was super fun, long lab reports but only every 2 weeks so its manageable.
Extremely poorly structured course. Midterms were nowhere near reflective of how material was taught, not to mention an extremely inflexible and frustrating person to communicate with.
He gives so much information in lecture and then gives you 0 examples of how to apply it. Then gives you old, irrelevant problem sets, and then his exams are 80% application and the questions don't reflect anything you've learned. Every student asked him to drop the first midterm because of his own mistakes and he dropped one question at most.
Never want to take a class with Boddy again. He curved the first midterm around 20% and the class average was still 55%. What he teaches in the lectures is completely pointless, midterms are all application based when he has never shown 1 example in class before. Literally pulls these questions out of his ass
Genomics would have been my favourite course if it weren't for Dr. Boddy - slides are unclear, consisting mostly of figures and captions from old papers with very little information on concepts. Exams are not reflective of lecture content. Extremely discouraging class - not representative of the amount of effort or passion you contribute.
Awful experience. 2 midterms worth 20% each, and a 60% final. Even used the textbook to try better my understanding of concepts after receiving a low mark - but proved to be useless because on tests he throws in random application questions that we have never seen. The effort you put in is not reflective of the mark you receive.
This guy uses chalkboard and makes you draw compounds with m.w. > 500. During the class, you'll be so concentrated to re-draw every molecule that you won't even have time to actually understand the concepts. His exams are super hard, and he doesn't even post any practice questions or past exams, so basically no way to be prepared.
His exams are extremely application based, but he barely covers application in class. He'll give you rough definitions, and that's all. There's no graded assignments; your grade is dependent on 2 20% midterms and a 60% final. So if exams are your weak point (me), godspeed.
I LOVE BODDY!! This is one of the only classes where I felt I understood everything. I love the way he teaches. He writes notes on his slides which I found more interactive than only speaking and reading off PPs. Everything on his midterms/final were on his slides. This course is definitely not memorization based.
His lecture slides do not explain the material very well. You are expected to understand drawings and answer application type questions about them. Exams do not reflect material and he bell curves heavily because of this.
The class started great, he was easy to reach however at the end of the semester he stopped replying to emails. The second midterm which was written at the beginning of November wasn't returned till the day before the exam mark was given. This class was extremely applicative based so the lectures are barely useful. Wouldnt recommend him at all.
Dr. Boddy is a great professor and his exams are extremely fair. You really need to understand how to use the online tools to do well (practice with assignments). Exam content is no surprise, the questions closely reflect the in class content and assignments. Dr. Boddy isn't really accessible outside of class, so ask questions during the lecture.
Online, this course was well structured with podcasts demonstrating the use of bioinformatic tools quite well. I found the lectures very interesting and engaging, but would think this would only be the case if you are into genomics. His midterms and final were very fair and had mixed application questions and lecture knowledge questions.
Honestly the worst prof I have ever had and I am in 4th year. He does not explain ANYTHING he puts on the midterms in terms of the "bioinformatics" section of the course. His podcasts are honestly pointless as he will speed through it and show 0 examples of anything he will put on the exam. Honestly skip this class by all means.
Dr. Boddy is super nice and does his best to make sure students understand the content in class, but he is pretty disorganized. There were meant to be weekly assignments, but barely even half ended up getting posted, so you can't really practice anything. Information about midterms was given the class before and was incredibly vague
Dr. Boddy is a nice person, however he sucks at teaching. His lectures are focused more on getting through content rather than explaining ideas. He's very disorganized, and provides little room for practice even though his exams are heavily application based. You usually have no idea what to expect on midterms/exams. Avoid this prof.
Lecture and test content is heavy and he is not very accessible outside of class. Only does office hours and doesn't respond to any students emails EVER
This guy is actually hilarious it'll be like the day of the final and you still won't have marks back for any of your midterms. Apart from that, he's super smart and the lectures are super interesting if you like genomics. Assignments are interesting and practical if you work in molecular bio in the future. Exams were a little wack but alright.
Avoid this professor like the plague! The course material itself is interesting and he is nice as a person, but he cannot teach. His lectures are fairly monotone and not engaging, he gets through barely a dozen slides per class and generally talks slow. Be prepared to only receive your grades hours before the final, which he provides no info on btw
Dr Boddy's lectures are generally neat and explained clearly. However, he has awful lecture pacing and often is behind schedule. His lectures teach little in exam questions and the method to solve them were not covered; knowledge questions were fair. Disorganized and inacessible outside class. Not rec'd unless previous course knowledge possessed.
Genomics was one of my fav classes this term. Chris is incredibly knowledgeable and I can confidently say that I have a genuine understanding of all the techniques we learned. Plus, the assignments were very helpful for practical lab/research work. Yes, he's a little disorganized but I forgive him. Would 100% take a course taught by him again.
Super cool class, first part of the course focuses on techniques used in biotech and the second part was a bunch of cool biotech-related guest speakers talking about their research and its implications/applications. Some overlap with other courses, but I guess that's bound to occur with biotech being a super multidisciplinary field.
I wish that it was paced more reasonably. The final exam will feel as though you're just jam packing your brain with information, and not actually retaining it. His lectures do not elaborate or help understand content, he basically just goes off the slides. Not great with feedback or help, but will respond to emails quickly.
Pros: Final exam only counted for 40% of the grade, as most of it was online quizzes, and he curved our grades. Cons: Ego the size of Marion Hall, unforgiving, rude, and asks almost exclusively questions that require memorizing the slides that he hmm's and haw's his way through reading. Absolutely do not take him if other profs are available.
Dr. Boddy is knowledgeable but can be disorganized. Assignments are helpful for practical lab work, but exams are tricky as the format is not always clear. Using Unstuck study and the free textbook helped me prepare effectively.
The final exam is in 21 hours and we still have not received grades/feedback for the second midterm (written over a month ago). He is disorganized and only posted 8 of the 12 assignments (many of which were posted without being announced, making it easy to miss the deadline). He is a good lecturer but disorganized and hard to reach outside class.
Not organized at all, hard to understand what he's teaching, made the class more difficult than it already is
The final exam is in 1 hour, and he still hasn't posted the marks from midterm 2. He's unreachable outside of class, and his teaching style is a mess. Focuses on annotating slides (copies down words from his old slides) rather than actually explaining content. Posted assignments randomly w/o announcements, so it was easy to miss deadlines (10% gone
At the start of the semester the course was fine, but as it went on it became increasingly disorganized. Lecture and assignment videos were posted late, deadlines were unclear, and communication was poor. I took the final today without receiving Midterm 2 marks (which was written over a month ago), so I only knew about 25% of my grade...
This guys a stinker. Wrote the final exam without getting my midterm 2 grades back. Doesn't post any form of practice even after he says he would. Very disorganized, assignments posted without deadlines so easy to lose marks.
