One of the best professors at HCC. That probably goes for Lone Star College too. Class expectations were clear. I needed extra help and he was very approachable and down to Earth! I earned an A for the semester. You will have to attend concerts on campus and out in the community.

Study his in class notes and listen to the songs. Quizzes/Tests come directly from the notes. It helps if you have an iPod or MP3 player so you can do repeat listening. Very cool instructor-he loves the subject. He wants all students to do well.

My favorite class and professor that I have taken! The class had a lot of music that you need & want to know. Also, the class covered musical form. Professor Borders does an excellent job demonstrating these forms by using the piano in class, so you really get to know how pop music in organized. Highly recommend Professor Borders!!!!!!

Very helpful instructor. He answers your questions very quickly via email! Took his online course in Music Fundamentals. No homework you just have to be able to scan and email the exams. You will need to attend 4 different concerts over the semester = no paper to write, just photos to submit. Highly Recommend this professor!

The instructor's expectations are clear and provided in syllabus, course announcements, and class memos. You do partner up with another classmate and work together over the semester. If I ever had questions, the instructor was very quick to respond via email (usually he responds instantly). No tests...highly recommend!!!

I took this class ONLINE, and honestly I believe this class would be very easy for most music students to follow, HOWEVER if you have never taken any music classes before/have never dealt with music (me) then this course is QUITE DIFFICULT, since we lack the basics. Prof. is not super helpful, but does reply to emails in a timely manner.

I have taken several online classes and this one was, by far the best. You get out of the class what you put into it but NO TESTS. You work through the book and look for resources online if you need additional help. Dr. Borders was always quick to respond with emails. He pointed me in a good direction to help me understand some of the material.

This teacher is the most rudest teacher I have ever had. He is a stickler for grading don't make any mistakes as so much as sending an assignment to his wrong email you have to send to his personal e-mail or he will give you a 0. Even if you turned it on time. Would never recommend him to anyone. I hated his class.

Professor responds quickly to emails! This is an independent study with weekly deadlines. You do have to be accountable for learning. You will have the textbook and internet. You have to be a dope to not do well in this class! Read the directions and submit your work on time to the right place. That's it-easy A.

Awesome professor! Took his online class. 2 test, 1 final, and 2 concerts of your choice, and a few assignments here and there which aren't hard at all if you go through the lessons on the website. A little bit of music background might help you out if you are taking this class ONLINE, otherwise, it might be a little challenging. No book needed.

I highly recommend taking his class! His expectations are very clear. He has weekly deadlines and provides video & written instructions to follow for all exams and some assignments. The use of Skype is required for his class, which is awesome because he responds very quickly to messages. He helped me at 2am on a project that I didn't understand!

I took him online in fall 2016 and he is a great teacher. He is always available and takes pride in making sure you understand everything. He has lots of links that help you. Great on-line class! Took him for Spring 2017. He is always available for you on Skype and answers questions right away. He is not a "Easy A", you will need to practice and do the work but the work is fun and doable. He takes your learning seriously. Take him and learn music!!

So i came into this class with absolutely 0 music experience. Even though it was challenging for me it was a great class. The Professor also utilizes Skype so if you have a question he (along with the rest of the class) is available for questions. Assignments were easy to follow. Overall it was a great class.

This professor posts many videos to thoroughly explain his topics. I thought that an online music class would be a class I didn't care about but he genuinely wants his students to succeed and know more about music. Not many tests, or quizzes. Mainly just weekly assignments.

Most accessible professor I've had, all communication is on skype and he responds within minutes at any hour of the day. There are 12 assignments consisting of recordings and timed musictheory lessons, 2 midterms & final. Midterms are over Skype, if you are not familiar with music notes (singing/piano), they are difficult, final is the easiest!

You will defiantly learn about music in this class, you will have to be attentive to due dates.

If you've had trouble with online classes in the past, DO NOT HESITATE TO TAKE THIS CLASS! I am TERRIBLE with online classes, the worst it gets. However, Dr. Borders makes it super manageable. He is SUPER responsive and caring. His online Skype discussion board helps his class stay on top of due dates and helps to casually engage w/ eachother.

I really enjoyed this class, learning the history of where music started was amazing. Prof. Borders provided all the notes and reviews of chapters to where we didnt even need a book which was awesome.

Honestly, I really cant complain. Before taking this class I looked him up on here and was very hesitant by the low grades. Definitely better then expected. The only thing I would want is a grading chart for the exams to know which topics are worth more. Music is not my major and it was confusing later on but he responds fast, so no major panicing

This class was definitely an easy class for me. However, there are very few assignments so if you fail one you definitely won't get an A.

Gave lots of notes. Easy to understand and get a lot of information from. Loved that attending a concert was an assignment. Not difficult all you need to do is read over all the notes and all the answers are there over the quizes and tests given.

This class is an easy A if you keep up with reading and check PowerPoints every week. The professor uses Skype to keep communication throughout the course and answers any question as soon as possible. There are two concert assignments everyone has to participate in. I really do recommend taking this course with Professor Borders!!!!

Professor Borders's class was pretty easy. Instead of a textbook, for our online section we used an online interactive textbook which was easily accessible. Professor Borders is easy to reach outside of class and will work with you to meet due dates for assignments.

This class was amazing ! I learned so much about music that I didn't know before. We didn't really use a textbook we used a music program to learn about the history of music. We had four music exams which were over songs from the specific genre we were learning about and as long as you studied the songs you can get an A on the exams.

4 exams that were Skype calls and you have to keep eye contact with the camera with throws off my focus when listening to the songs. You have to study 40+ songs but he only tests you on a few I think he should narrow the song list. We used amppomusic which has a lot of reading and chapters are due at the end of the week each week.

Prof. Borders is a great prof. The class is very interesting if you like music or want to learn more about it. The exams are weird though they were skype exams, with weird timing. All in all a good professor and very nice.

The homework is relatively easy and the the chapter quizzes are unlimited attempts. the final unit tests are single attempt but are easy if you done the chapter quizzes and got As on all of them. I would say about 1-2 hours of homework every week tops. 4 audio exams, study the songs and your good. hes very chill and cuts slack. take him, hes cool

Terrific teacher. I took his online American Music class which is the study of pop music in the 1800s through the 1990s. Even though its online, you feel connected to the instructor & other students via Skype. I highly recommend Professor Borders. Smart, more than fair, & super enthusiastic about his class.

This class is a history class where you learn about artists, cultures, and specific songs that make up pop music history. It was quite a few songs to identify, but that's expected when you take any type of history class. You have to be a lazy student to not do well in the class. Prof. Borders is great & very quick to respond to student messages.

Prof Borders was super accessible which was great because we never had live class, just online homework and a Skype test every few weeks. One thing I did not like about this course is he doesnt teach anything. You read a bunch of online text and then get tested on it a few weeks later. Makes for a difficult learning process in my opinion.

The class overall was a great experience for those who want to learn history, music history to be more exact. The modern era of music is all bundled up into one class, taught by an amazing teacher. The tests might've been rough for me, but if you have the time on your hands go for it!

Professor Borders is a pretty solid professor. He is straight forward and uses skype for most of the communication. There are 4 audio exams throughout the course, where he picks random songs from a repertoire and you have to name the song and artist. Those exams are also via skype calls.

He gives about 4 chances to make or break your grade in a decent way. This is easy to ace if you pay attention to the deadlines, go over content regularly, and always make sure to ask questions if clarification is needed. He uses skype and it makes it easier for both the student and professor as compared to traditional email.

Great class if you want to learn about the history of American music. Amazing Professor very passionate, overall great guy. The class was straight forward just do modules and get graded on the final exam on each one. And the audio exams were very fun to do, a great selection of songs very diverse, discovered many new songs and artists I now like.

I had this professor for Music 1303 and it was super fun. The work is super manageable and lowkey easy if you know music already. Awesome grader and super chill guy who will help if you need anything at all.

He's a nice guy but its just cut and dry with him. He makes you use a software called AMPOP music because its cheaper then the textbook but during the semester. The professors audio exams that are administered are very hard. 5- 10 questions and you have to memorize 20-30 songs. Professor doesn't use college required WebEX and uses Skype.

The only thing is that the audio exams are very heavy towards your grade and can be a bit challenging, make sure you really listen to the songs and dont wait last minute. A straightforward class so long as you check D2L regularly and keep up with the material. The main issue I had with the course was with the test. There are no retakes or test corrections and test are proctored by the prof. I got 4/7 questions on the 2nd to last exam and I don't know if Ill be able to salvage the A I had all semester, seems harsh.

This professor is amazing and i honestly did not regret taking his class. He allows you to better understand the music such as the background of certain artist and the lyrics. Repetition is key for his class since he does audio exams which you must know the song title and artist which can give you a easy A. 10/10 would take his class again!

Uses cheap $40 website for assignments so you Save money on textbooks. Youll have 4 Audio Exams for the music so do learn the song name and artist, and be sure to sign up in time or else heavy grade drop. Overall cool guy and responds quickly(he uses Skype FYI)

The course is pretty easy but be prepared to read your textbook front to back but a lot of them are very useful activities that help you understand what you are reading. But the professor is always available incase you are having any trouble.

The textbook was a website (way cheaper than a normal website) and it was also where quizzes are given for the first half of the course. A lot of reading on this website, but after that, it's power point slides. Listen to his guidelines and you will be fine. Make a playlist of the songs given and listen frequently. He is reachable through Skype.

If you need to take a class that needs this type of credit I highly recommend this one. The class is easy to comprehend and requires Just some reading and listening to the material given. Professor Borders is a great teacher, he is very organized. He makes it easy to contact him if you need help. His class is very straight forward, but is not super easy, you will have to put in effort if you want to do good. He will not take late grades, but that will not be a problem if you stay on top of the assignments.

It was a really great class. The only real issue I ran into was a specific timeline for taking the Audio Lectures. Audio exams were via Skype. Usually on the weekend's Sat/Sun, in which you have to sign up a head of time to take them between 7-12 pm. It makes things difficult being an " online-only" class. That was my only issue.

Overall Professor Borders was really accessible he uses Skype to communicate with his students. Class was interesting there were 4 audio exams which consisted of a video call and required to memoize 30 or so songs. Definitely a class that requires a few hours of studying for the audio exams.

This is more of a course review than about the professor but overall I would never take this class again. It felt very unstructured and also a waste of money. Why make us buy a textbook if we have to do "remote learning" and read off PowerPoint slides later in the year? In addition, the syllabus was messy to check and is not updated regularly.
