He should not be teaching 100 level courses. He uses extremely obscure, ornate material. He deducts marks for "lack of improvement." He is joyless and appears dejected. He says outright that good writers must know every grammatical nuance.
Bracken seems to hate teaching and more over hates first year students. Why he is teaching a first year class is beyond me let alone why a guy like this is even allowed to teach.
It's not just 1st yrs he doesn't like, he called us 3rd yrs "lowly undergrads." He ridiculed a student In Class when she didn't understand the text (rather than helping!). I really didn't learn much from him. Don't put yourself thru the stress o
Most pretentious individual I have ever encountered! Avoid him at all costs.

Bracken... he is a very HARD professor. I must say that I've learned a lot from him but he doesn't seem to teach because he likes it. He also makes me feel as though I know nothing... atleast not enough to be in university.
It's a love/hate situation. VERY high expectations. Rude/demeaning/intimidating. Articulate. Honest. Brilliant. Sarcastic, but witty. Ideal for people who desire a challenge and a real learning experience outside of dumbed-down english courses.
Eccentric yet unbelievably smart
I don't care how "brilliant" he is, there is no excuse for blatant disrespect of students. I am paying to take his class and further my education, not shred any sense of self-worth I had to begin with. Avoid him.
Very knowledgeable and understands literature and the related fields. Very good if you want to be more than a mediochre english student, though be prepared to work because the subject matter is never easy.
easily one of the smartest people I've ever encountered. His lectures are dense and engaging, jam-packed with information. Has the rare ability to be unrelentingly hilarious without breaking his Lestat/Branaugh's Hamlet character. High standards, high results, yo.
Bloody hard class, but Bracken made it interesting. Don't take him if you're unsure about yourself. I learned a lot but really had to work for it; he's very smart and expects you to be as well. His attitude is fun even when you're on the receiving end.
I cant believe this man is allowed to teach! He is a horrible professor and refuses to treat students with respect or dignity! It is unfair that the University requires him to teach required courses. He should be avoided at all cost!
The most intelligent prof I've ever had, but isn't about to give anything away for free. Those who find him demeaning, from what I saw, probably deserved it, because he will bend over backwards if you show up and work hard.
The most intelligent academic mind in the University. I went from hating him because he was so intimidating to having the utmost respect for him by the end of last semester. His classes are extremely rewarding and challenging. He seems to be angry at the world.
He's a very intelligent person. As far as a professor well he talks way to fast in lecture. He uses powerpoint, and I thought it was useful. The problem is his notes are not posted on the internet. Maybe he will us WEBCT next term. He is a very hard marker.
He is an intelligent person. However this professor talks way to quickly in lecture. Used powerpoint in lectures, but the slides had little information in them. Furthermore his notes are not posted on the internet. Maybe he will us WEBCT next term. Also is not an easy marker.
An absolutely phenomenal prof - one of the truly rewarding classes I've taken in my 4 years here and I attribute this to Bracken's incredible intelligence and ability to help students improve and aim higher. He is ruthlessly stingy with marks unless he thinks you really deserve them, but in the end I think the hard work really pays off!
The course was notably difficult, and he was sometimes unnecessarily rude and unhelpful. Fortuately, the difficulty either resulted in the student either overachieving, or failing/dropping the class. Contentwise, the course was so profound that it actually changed the way that I think and talk. I credit the professor with that.
terrible
Evidently a relative of Grendel. A poor understanding of the undergraduate. Cockiness is not an excuse for abuse. Perhaps he should read Paradise Lost and understand its implications. I cannot recommend this person to anyone. Students should be forewarned about this individual.
He's tough. I love it.
According to the outline, the course seemed very straight forward in the early stages. Work hard and it will pay off... right? haha what a mistake I made. Bracken grades his undergraduates like english-majoring students. There are no excuses for his abusive tone and constant crticisms. My theory: Bracken is angry at the world. Proceed with caution.
I sympathize with the previous comments. A sadomasochistic approach to teaching is not the way it should be. I too wish I could eject from this course but once you have gone past the deadline for withdrawal, you are stuck and you don't want it to affect your transcript. The problem with the course is that you have the professor for the entire year.
I was planning to go into med school, but BRACKEN slowed those plans down. He is the world's worst teacher, he is very cocky and arrogant, plus his smirk makes me just want to slap him. He shows no encouragement and if you ask him a question he looks at you as if you asked something very stupid. NOT RECOMMENDED!!!
I hate to call him a genius but he sort of is. But I found him to expect almost too much. Spoke too fast, didn't repeat concepts, expected a grasp that equaled his and graded with high expectations. Gpa booster? No. But I guess you do learn a lot. It's a love/hate/cry yourself to sleep every night kind of thing. Dry sarcastic humor...v. funny.
One of the freakiest people you'll ever encounter in your life. VERY strange sense of the world. Unlike any other prof you'll ever encounter during your post secondary education, I guarantee it. Yet the suffering of his class is almost worth it, just because I hate to admit he IS brilliant, knows his stuff. Gives you something to write home about.
It is truly time to pull the plug on this professor as an undergraduate teacher. Let him be abusive to majors or graduates.
A hate-the-marks/love-the-prof type.Dont come hoping for high grades but rather because you want to learn.Well read, clever, and very funny guy.I tried to switch out of his class in the beginning but now glad I couldn't- he is the best prof I have encountered thus far.I learned a lot in his class.
greatest prof ever!!! devastatingly sexy, intensly frustrating, will improve your writing and comprehension skills
I kept with this course until the end. I would not have taken it had I realized the nature of the professor to begin with. I agree with some of the other comments that this person is not one for undergraduate students.
Very open manager, not fascist director, of ideas. Felt like studying with someone, not like being ordered into intellectual submission
Teaching is a talent which comes with the understanding of the student and the student's needs. This individual does NOT understand students. He is truly a miserable nut. Whether well read or seemingly intelligent, such personal characteristics mean nothing to the student at the receiving end. Dr. Bracken, go back to school and learn how to TEACH.
Everything already said, good and bad, is completely true. On the one had, pace is way too fast with ridiculous reading quantities, with little to no explanation or so brief concepts are hard to grasp. Yet, good material covered, a great challenge, and an engaging and funny class. That being said, its all boring semiotics... signs signs signs :(
Bracken is my god. Undergrads beware, he doesn't want to hold your hand, but the cliff he's pushing you off is the best of your entire education. If you fancy yourself a thinker this is your man. His topics are fascinating, his views twisted and he really DOES care what you have to say (just make sure you actually have something)
If you have any complaints, ask him about the object-disciple-mentor model and you'll understand. He's not out to have you memorize dates or numbers, only to make you realize that you might just have some ideas of your own. Highly encouraging of individual thought outside the box. Marks hard, but it keeps you on your toes at least.
Wow, could anyone be a harder marker? His return comments on the essays he marks are illegible so don't expect any help there.
He will demolish your GPA but you have to lose some to gain some. Hard marker, great prof. He truely improved my skills in ever aspect and sparked my interest in reading into the text instead of glazing over it.
Bracken is, simply put, rude. During group presentations, he will call you on a mistake in front of the entire class. I escaped the presentations with a decent mark, but other groups were demolished. He buddies up with a select few students. If you have the time to earn an A, go for it? but if you make minor mistakes, they will bring you down.
Theory bootcamp. If you come in knowing next to nothing, you leave with a working knowledge that becomes essential if you're an English major. Anyone who is not an English major in their second or third year will not benefit from what this classe does to GPA's. He's not rude, he's professional. He runs a mature classroom and values input.
Terrible, terrible teacher. He degrades certain students for lack of knowledge and understanding as opposed to helping them and teaching them what they need to know. He is arrogant, incompassionate and all in all one of the worst human beings I have ever come accross.
Hardest course EVER! You may cry. Will kill your GPA but grades are inflated! Way beyond second year level. Definitely tests your ability to free associate and draw conclusions and your critical readings. Amazing course! If you want to be tested and are an English major, take this Prof!
I don't know what these raters are smoking, he was one of the nicest profs I had. He provided a ton of constructive feedback throughout the course and graded fairly. This was the most difficult class I ever took though so if you're looking for a basket-weaving course, this is not it. Definite GPA killer.
Very intelligent guy, and lots of constructive feedback, pretty clear on his expectations of you. You will learn alot on how you're expected to write, but he marks HARD and you cant read his comments, not eligible at all. Kills GPA
It seems like students either like him or hate him. I liked him. His expectations might seem unreasonably high, but I think he pushes students to develop a crucial skill set needed to read and write well in university and also to shed the misconceptions and bad habits that have been inflicted on them by the high school english curriculum.
He comes off as scary in the first couple classes but he's one of the smartest profs. Knows what he's talking about but relies a lot of students to teach the class; he's not scared to interupt and tell you if you're wrong. Either you hate him or you like him. Not that hard of a marker but you do need to put in effort to get a good grade.
Christopher Bracken is one of the hardest profs I have even had. No matter how hard I tried, I never got a grade higher than a B. Everything he teaches comes from one of the hardest textbooks to understand. For the final , he wouldn't let us write on the literature we had read in the class, so in the end, showing up for class was a waste of time.
worst prof ever. no one got higher than a B in the class. He told us that the semester would get better as it progressed as long as you applied what you've learned... for the term essay (worth 35%) the class average was a D+. He's the kind of prof that never made it further in his field and is taking his frustration out on his students.
Excellent prof! Take his course. If you put in the effort to improve you will be rewarded. Isn't that exactly what this university thing is about?
Great prof. Clear and concise and knows his stuff.
Definitely a very hard marker. If I had known what the class would be like I would have dropped in immediately. I think he would be better geared to graduate studies, as he clearly dislikes undergrads from his constant criticism of them. Wouldn't give out his email and office hours so after class help was impossible. Excessive amount of readings.
This man is the most arrogant and self righteous person I have ever met. Told us on the first day of class that he doesn't assign A's, does not give his email to undergrads because we ask stupid questions, and overall makes you feel belittled. This man should not be teaching 100-level English.
Everything said before is true, he can be arrogant and he does mark ridiculously hard but all for the reason of improvement. My first essay was a C and after taking his feed back and applying it to my writing I improved a whole letter grade. This is university, teachers are not going to hold your hand. He knows his stuff and expects you to work
Bracken is probably the most difficult english professor I've ever taken. Basically, for an english major he is the barbed wire fence you might want to throw yourself at. His exams are based on a part A and a part B. With three of the initial readings and three of the latter readings. A tip for 309: Know both the conversion experience and the [x].
Really likes his theory and expects you to apply it and know it well. Don't get discouraged if he doesn't acknowledge your comments in class, keep asking questions. If you make it through his course, your other classes won't be as hard, definitely worth it
I learned a lot from this course. Definitely the best I've taken at U of A.
You should choose to take Professor Bracken's courses because he's one of the few critical minds at the University of Alberta who actually takes a bite out of reality. The only issue is that Professor Bracken is so good at what he does that not only does he make other professors seem unqualified but he also reveals your own skill level.
He is a very intelligent man, but should NOT be teaching undergrads. On the first day he told us he does not give his e-mail address out to undergrads. He had us (second years) reading Frye's Anatomy of Criticism, among other difficult and dry texts. His feedback on essays had lots of criticism but few suggestions for improving. Avoid him as a prof
Don't let Bracken's personality get in the way of what he's saying; it's brilliant stuff. While he wouldn't do email, he was always available after class for questions or comments. He was also very honest, which hurts fragile students. But I wish I would've taken Bracken's lower level classes before this one because I felt lost half the time.
Very strict at first but lightens up as the semester goes on. He's a tough but fair grader but gives good feedback to help you improve. He explains the readings and what he expects on the essays if you bother showing up to class. His lectures are dry but have great content.
This was the last class of my degree and certainly one of the best -- if not the best! He's an interesting lecturer. Excellent course material. Puts in the effort to provide helpful written comments. Willing to discuss the readings with students in person after class.
You get what you give. Bracken is not afraid to call students out on laziness and his "honesty" and high standards seem to unnerve undergrads. However, he's intelligent and well read, and classes are funny and exciting. He doesn't like email and office hours were near nonexistent, but if you've gone to every class, he will make time to talk to you.
He's a great lecturer but he doesn't have an email, and doesn't post notes online so be prepped to write your own good notes as he lectures fast. Also I wouldn't be concerned about asking questions in class as he will ignore you. He marks harder than my 300 level profs & doesn't give remarks on how to do better just calls undergrads stupid a lot
Hardest english course I've ever taken. The reading load is HEAVY you need Time Management skill or this class will be easy flunk. Lazy writers beware: You will be punished. Worked to the BONE for weeks to obtain a B. You'll learn a lot but if you already have a heavy course load i'd save this class for a term with easier classes. THIS IS HARD AF
SO MANY READINGS, be prepared. Kinda has a thing against undergrads. Tough grader, and very strict on grammar. Incredibly useful info in lectures, but doesn't post anything online so take lots of notes. Great with giving feedback on essays and how to improve. Only test in this course was a midterm take-home assignment. Final is a Research Paper.
Interesting class, but super tough and dense material. There was a ton of reading and most of it was difficult to get through. He's a tough marker but fair, and he interacts with the material really well. Not a GPA booster, and I'd avoid if you have an already heavy course-load.
Professor Bracken does not deserve the bad rep he gets. He is an amazing professor, not a tough grader at all, just realistic for a 200-level english class. His lectures are very well organized and he provides good feedback on how to improve for your next essays.
Professor Bracken openly dislikes undergraduate students. As the semester progressed, I discovered that that his dislike of undergrads is really just a dislike of the lack of effort and respect that many undergrads bring to class. I learned more in this class than any other class I've taken, but don't take this class if you aren't ready to work.
This professor gave F's to 14 out of the 33 students on our very first essay worth 20% of our final grade. The final is a 5 page research essay worth 50%. He explicitly told the class he is capable of giving F's to any essay and bragged about never losing an appeal. If english is not one of your strong suits I highly recommend another professor.
People don't like Dr. Bracken because people don't like putting in the work. His political opinions can sometimes be controversial, but he's an nice and sometimes funny guy who is passionate about what he does. If you put in the work--including talking to him when you're struggling--you'll do fine.
Bracken's rep is both accurate and not. I do wish the guy was a little less standofish, but if you put in the work you'll find his disdain for undergrads is really just about lazy people expecting to coast through on recycled ideas. He's one of the funniest, most intelligent people I've ever met, and I left his class a better writer and thinker.
My feelings on Bracken are really conflicted. On one hand, he is very smart and gave really interesting lectures. On the other, dude is really rude and has no respect for his students. I ended up withdrawing after when the pandemic hit and he still was still too good to be emailing us updates.
In order to engage with material the way Bracken wants you to, you'd have to be taking one class a semester starting from his 100 level courses. There's a difference between providing students with a challenge and throwing them into the deep end of Rousseau with more notes from his lectures than they know what to do with.
I don't know why he speaks so lazyly, i was get tired of the way he speaking when I attend his first class. It helps you get asleep if you are suffering from insomnia. And lots of readings.
This man hates teaching. He expects attendance and participation but hates coming to his own class and canceled often. He talks slow and does not ask probing questions to incite discussion. The readings he assigns are archaic. He was even rude to me to my face when I had never spoken directly to him. He forgets university is not free!
Bracken is a polarizing professor. Try one of his courses for at least a week and see how you feel, though I definitely would not recommend him for a first year course due to his surprising bluntness. Though others may have good reasons for disliking him, Bracken has given me the most insightful instruction I have ever received.
He can be really intimidating especially during the first few classes and does express dislike to laziness, and he is strict with his expectations. You have to put in effort and work and be able to show him what you've done. If you talk to him after class and show you care, he will help you a lot. My writing and work ethic greatly improved.
Read any notices, the syllabus, and course outline carefully. Do the work and communicate with him (in a way that respects his time and preferences) and you will do great and feel comfortable. There is much to learn from Professor Bracken. He is one of my favorite professors in the department of English because he helps his students grow.
He told my class that there were too many students to give individual feedback on the weekly writing assignments. He said if we keep writing, our grades would improve; mine didn't. When we did receive personal feedback, he pointed out everything wrong but didn't bother to help the student improve. He is quite intimidating and lazy speaking.
Would give a 0 if I could. I had Braken during the online year of the pandemic. He only utilized 30 min of the scheduled 3 hours of class time. He never gave feedback besides on one paper, which came back almost 2 months after submission. He wanted his lectures to be discussion based but rudely criticized students opinions that didn't align w/ his
Really intelligent and well organized and surprisingly funny. But the workload is completely exorbitant for a 200-level class. He's an extremely tough grader (he will fault you for not knowing supplementary readings that aren't even on the syllabus), the assignment rubrics are nonsense and it's honestly not worth the trouble for an undergrad credit
Makes you want to cry with his feedback, in every other English course I have received at least B+'s on my essays. First essay humbled me with a C... the worst part I thought it was not too bad. Made me question my major :(
He does not care about students. He spends a reasonable amount of time at the beginning of each lecture saying how a UofA Arts degree will be obsolete in the coming years. He consistently rails on UofA, saying due to budget cuts he will not be marking our assignments. I received no feedback on papers. Final exam is filled with arbitrary quotes.
This is by far one of the worst profs I've had in my time at university. He consistently talks about his disdain for undergrads (while teaching a class of undergrad students), spends 20 minutes in each class talking about how he hates his job, and clearly does not enjoy teaching. Avoid him at all costs.
Professor Bracken was the worst professor I have had in my university career. He was incredibly unprofessional and missed no opportunity to scare undergrads. I don't believe I learned anything valuable about Indigenous literature, and this course was for Indigenous literature. Avoid his class if you can.
The only reason I did well in this class is because I'm a fourth year and English is my major. He is extremely tough on grammar, so make sure to read all his extra tips, otherwise you won't have any idea of what he expects. He constantly rags on undergrads while simultaneously expecting them to have a grad-school level dedication to the course.
If he is your only option, God help you. Don't make the same mistake I did.
He can be rude sometimes and does not answer questions properly. He has specific hours in the day where you can email him or he wont answer, when you do email during those hours he takes days to answer. On the other hand, he gives good feedback and marks assignments quick, doesn't assign too many things. He is a difficult prof so be careful.
Do not take his class. No direction whatsoever. At no point did he ever explain how to do any assignments and gave no support to students with questions. Save yourself the time, money, and headache and do not take any class taught by him.
He's an AMAZING lecturer, and very funny. He made undergrad jokes but it was teasing and pointing out common mistakes. I learned so much from this class. He's strict but he tells you exactly how to do well if you listen. I'm a science major and I had time to read some of his suggested readings; they helped. PUT IN THE EFFORT and you can do well.
We wrote essays throughout the terms, received no feedback on them. Kept mentioning that most of his students don't pass his class but never actually taught the things necessary to do well in the final paper. No direction whatsoever in his lectures. The absolute worst prof I've ever had and he clearly lacks interest in his job.
I don't understand the low ratings at all. We had an extremely interesting topic for an English 103 class, the lectures were open and class directed, and he made his expectations very clear. The final class paper could be written on anything as long as it could be examined in relation to the topic.
ENGL 398. Interesting readings and lectures. It would be a difficult/tedious class if you don't like reading or aren't interested in literary theory. There were only two graded papers because you get full marks for the assignments just for submitting. Very forgiving with extensions and lots of feedback. Happy I took this class!
Professor Bracken was amazing! Was kind and understanding when it came to giving extensions. I enjoyed the course reading, and the lectures really pulled you in. It is a hard class if you are a massive procrastinator because the course contains heavy reading material. The assignments were fairly easy, and you get a pass for handing them in.
No direction in his lectures at all. Has a distaste for first years and undergraduates for some reason and treats students like children. Makes super passive-aggressive comments. Assignments weren't too bad and he was pretty nice at times but I could not stand his attitude.
Lecture very hard to follow and does not prepare you for the assignments/final. Does not believes in extensions or lates because according to him it creates bad students. Emails take a week to answer.
He's a rude & funny guy at times. Attendance was not mandatory, however he definitely will develop a dislike towards you if you do not decide to attend. Take my rating with a grain of salt as I barley showed up to his class, however I can firmly say if English is not your strong suit and your not looking to put in the effort do not take his class.
Walked in and told us half of us would drop out and the other half of who remained would fail. He was nice sometimes but overall kinda sucked course-wise. Rarely gave feedback.
His class is primarily discussion-based, so it's important to keep up on the readings, as this helps tremendously when writing any assignments for his class. I was a little nervous after reading some of the reviews, but I can say that if you follow his feedback, there is a decent chance you'll get a good mark. Overall, a decent guy!
Ok, so: -not into New Criticism. -informed by historical perspectives and law -tells u how academia works. -theory and praxis- shows how stuff you learn in class actually apply to your everyday life -to understand things about the state of literary criticism today as well as its history in general. -his pedagogical perspective is very good.
Very anti-technology, seems to dislike undergraduate students and difficult to understand. I understand what he was trying to do with this course, however it was very difficult to follow. His outlook on certain things is great, it is just difficult to understand what he truly means. Choice of books for this course were not great either.
I had an awful experience with this prof. He hates undergrads, suggested we were all going to fail, gives zero feedback, takes half the class to complain about the either the school, technology, or the world, and he has intense in-class and email rules. Seriously, stay away.
Prof. Bracken spends the majority of class complaining about his job and his hatred of the university. He routinely expressed his distaste for undergrads (in a class of undergrads) and refused to answer any emails because he was "to busy." He is a hard marker, and we read 5 full novels, so prepare to read. Worst professor I have had; stay away!
You can tell this guy is extremely smart. He will scare you on the first day but then he is actually kind of funny and kind. Bring a notebook as computers are not allowed. Tough marker and very little feedback—he claims the textbook is the rubric. Complains about the university and students. Lectures are interesting but have zero direction.
- Uses Freud (Despite Freud being UNFALSIFIABLE! So much for a "research community") - Expects you to know graduate level English writing for an intro course and shames you if you don't - Inconsistent, arbitrary marking (marked ai generated essays higher than actual essays) - No rubric for assignments - Sleep inducing lectures - No tech allowed
I'm not sure if he just feels depressed 24/7, but that's how his lectures feels like. No one in the class knows what's happening. His grading scheme is inconsistent and talks down on undergraduate students.
Definitely an acquired taste. Very dry in his humor but surprisingly entertaining and captivating. Incredibly smart and well informed in almost every subject. Assignments are easy, you just have to be willing to do the work. While his classes can be difficult to understand, trust me, you know more than you think.
You're the rock climber and Bracken's on belay. You have to do the climbing yourself; blisters, challenges, creative freedom and responsibilities, all that. But he's not without a heart. Leap for that hold just beyond reach, he won't let you plummet if you push too far and slip. Keep going. Have fun. From the top, the view is well worth the effort.
This man was extremely rude and disregarding to his undergraduate students. I would not recommend his classes unless you have thick skin. It is obvious that Dr.Bracken does not enjoy his job or his position at the university. In fact, he vocalizes this in class to his students. I do not recommend at all.
Professor Bracken has a polarizing teaching style - he expects a lot but can be tough to understand. Engaging with the material and attending lectures helps, though he can be critical of undergrads. unstuck study was a handy study tool alongside the course readings.
You've got to be willing to put the work in, but effort and improvement over time are rewarded. Readings are interesting, and Bracken has a fascinating teaching style keeping you engaged. The pass/fail assignments and flexibility in essay topics were greatly appreciated; this supports students' autonomy and lets them make the material their own.
I enjoyed his lectures a lot. I think he's one of those guys either you love him or you hate him. He brings up a lot of pretty interesting concepts from outside of specifically assigned course material which I enjoyed a lot. Overall keeps lectures pretty enriching. Enjoyed his sense of humor lol.
Forgot to rate the difficulty in the previous post. I'd say about a 3.5. As long as you're trying, you show up, and he can see you're actively improving you'll be fine.
A lot of the low ratings come from students who expect to breeze by in their courses. The course was tough but he wants you to really succeed and contrary to his "I don't give feedback" attitude, if he sees you are trying, he absolutely does! The readings mattered to the duration of the course. I walked away knowing I actually learned something.
I really enjoyed Prof. Bracken's class. He can be demanding of students, but I felt this was helpful for my learning. He definitely made my writing better.
