A REALLY good teacher. The really dry stuff ISN'T really dry in this class. Very accessible outside of class. You have to keep up and go to lectures to do well, but lectures are actually pretty interesting.

You have to go to lectures, but they are fun, and Brochu is entertaining. Loved this class!
Prof Brochu has an obvious passion for the material he's teaching, and he's definitely a fun guy to watch teach. Any other professor, the class might be boring as sin but he makes it all pretty interesting.

you have to go to lecture but its a sweet class. very fun and easy.

Very interesting teacher that obviously has a passion for the subject matter (and crocs!. Must attend every lecture as there is no book. Easy labs, 2 small worksheets, no homework, but the tests and quizes are very hard. I would recomend this class!
Brochu opened our semester by placing a picture of "Sue" on the overhead and claiming to have worked on "that ****" for three years. Although that comment might has struck some of the more discerning students as latent misogyny, Brochu spent the semester proving otherwise by cursing in a variety of contexts that were all funny as hell.
Very interesting professor! Love the class, though his tests are a bear to say the least. Not having a textbook is a hassle too, but you get used to it. Favorite class! A word of advice: GO TO CLASS and STUDY HARD!
This class is so interesting! I had never taken anything on dinosaurs in my life and actually like the material discussed in lecture. It is mandatory to attend ALL lectures because there is no textbook. If you go to class and study, you will do well! I highly recommend this course. he is a good professorr!
awesome class, really into what he teachers. tests are a bit tough but as long as you study a decent amount, you're good to go. Brochu's a great lecturer...always hilarious.
Hilarious.
Took Age of Dinosaurs, and I regret it. It was extremely difficult, even when I attended every lecture. Dr. Brochu tries to interject pop culture into his lectures but fails to be insightful or funny. Very mean spirited and he absoultely hates Jurassic Park. Not very approachable either.
Way too in deppth....no one knows what hes talking about because hes too smart...teaches on a different level
He hates Jurassic Park, and his ex-wife divorced him because he loved crocodiles more than he loved her. He is a very funny (and attractive) man, but his humor is dry and the class is actually difficult (surprise!).
Worthwhile class if you are not interested in Chemistry, Physics, Bio, and others. Lectures are interesting, Brochu has great humor and teaching skills. Quizzes are pretty easy, midterms aren't bad if you study. Only complaint is the labs which are pretty lame. Definitely recommend this class to everyone...
The people who say his class is hard are the same people who complain when they fail a class even though they never went to class. If you study this class is a breeze.
hilarious, smart, and sexy. His class was fascinating. I just wish we had a text book to study from
class isnt horrible, its not fun either. some of the material gets a little boring towards the end of the semester. theres a lot of vocab that you have to memorize to stay caught up. class is basically mandatory, its pretty tough if you skip. tests can be tricky but he has been known to use some patterns on the multiple choice. great guy, funny
This class was kind of boring. It is not that hard if you go to all the lectures AND pain attention. I dozed in alot of them and i did ok in the class. Chris/Kevin is kind of annoying. He thinks hes funny when hes not. He is okay at delivering the material but i was just so bored in lecture. Labs are also really lame
Took intro to Dinos. YOU HAVE TO GO TO CLASS. The material is sometimes rather thick and there is no textbook. Go to class, pay attention, and take good notes (I know it is hard but do it) and you will do well. Labs are really easy. Prof. is pretty funny
This professor is awful. He is NOT funny. No textbook so you have to go to lecture.I enjoyed lab, but I would not recommend this class it's a waste of time.
Very fun to listen to.
He is so into what he teaches it is funny how obssessed is is about dinos and crocs. GO TO CLASS. He loves to give quizzes over lectures that are popular to miss because he thinks it is funny.
Brochu is very passionate about the subject of dinosaurs, which shows in every one of his lectures. However, i found his class to be very difficult even though I always went to lecture and studied; there is a lot of memorization of details involved. However, he is very helpful at office hours.
Overall this is a fun class (if you're interested in Dinos that is). One has to attend lecture because he writes his notes on the overhead. The labs are easy. If you take good notes and study this class isn't hard. Also Prof. Brochu is kinda of attractive ;^).He also has an interesting sense of humor (and a potty mouth at times lol)
No textbook, no discussion. Only way to get notes is to go to lecture which isn't bad because he makes them really interesting. I find his humor funny and he obviously cares about his subject which makes it better to listen to. Overall a good professor. Would def. want to take another one of his classes.
Overall EASY gen ed natural scienes w/lab filler. Have to go to lecture in order to get notes (he uses the overhead). Labs are VERY EASY. Prof Brochu is smart, funny and sexy ;^).Has been known to use patterns on his tests.
Fun class!!! the prof is hilarious and the material is interesting. The only downer is that there is no textbook so one must go to lecture because he writes materials on the overhead so it is the only way to get notes. Also Prof. Brochu is attractive ;^)
Overall, he is a good professor. Undergraduates who don't enjoy Chem or Bio should absolutely take this class. However, it's not a cake walk. Must study for exams and go to class. Labs help your grade out a lot.
pretty good professor overall. age of dinos is a good class for busniess majors who need a science. super easy labs (usually get out an hour early). brochu writes everything you need to know on the overhead in lecutre so make sure you attend.
Christopher Brochu is a horrible teacher. His notes are very sporadic and it is very hard to follow him during lecture. I wouldn't recommend this class to anyone, and I even had an interest in the course. Worse class ever!
If you are not a science guy, avoid this class! The exams are extremely hard because Brochu asks every single detail! He is hilarious though, so he'll keep you awake in lectures. He hates Jurassic Park but loves crocs more than everything you can imagine. Don't forget to attend labs! Lab reports will help your grade
Hate this class. Memorization is 100%. BORING!
HARD, STAY AWAY! Easy labs though
TEACHER IS A STRAIGHT UP CELEBRITY
Labs are extremely easy esp because most TA's will let you work together or give you the answer BUT tests and quizzes are extremely difficult and I went to lecture. Brochu is very detail oriented but his notes are just the opposite. He expects you to connect the pieces, which can be annoying and difficult if you have no interest for the subject.
I was sick of listening his stupid jokes during all the lectures, and he thinks he's funny, but most of the time I wanted to plug my ears from idiot humor and the way he teaches sucks! Easy lab and cool TAs, but not this egoistic guy. Worst of all, he thinks himself sexy!So grose...
very interesting, very hard.
You have to study EVERY single detail for the test.
This class was really interesting. I took it for my lab science credit. Tests are extremely hard. Go to the labs they will improve your grade. This class provided me with a fun and challenging science that did not include chemistry which I loved. He is a good professor and makes lectures very entertaining and interesting!
Brochu is an awesome professor. He really has a passion for the subject. His lectures are great. That's a good thing to, because if you want to pass you'll have to go to the lecture. If you memorize your synapomorphies (a term you'll learn in the class) and the cladogram (another term you'll learn) you'll do fine. JEFF is the best TA BTW.
he's a good teacher. most of his lectures are actually interesting and fun to go to because he likes to make jokes. make sure you study for the tests because they're difficult. when it comes to grading though he's not horrible.
Chris is a really funny teacher and makes going to lectures worth it. Everyone keeps posting that his tests are really hard, but they aren't. You just need to memorize the science terms and use basic logic. If you just listen in the lectures you will be above average on every test.
I had such a crush on him. Very interesting class. It's NOT ROCKS FOR JOCKS. Don't take it for an easy A.
Chris keeps the course material on the straight and narrow. Class and notes have always been easy to follow, but this is NOT a cop out class. The class will require consistent note taking and attention to get everything you need. His TA Rachel is very helpful and always ready to answer questions or help you grasp material better. Solid course. Heh.
Super fun professor! I love his class so much, and his enthusiasm for what he teaches gets me excited about it too. Rachel Guest is my TA and she is amazingly helpful and nice. If you're thinking about taking this class, make sure Rachel is your TA and you're willing to go to class and learn the material. The tests really aren't that bad either!
Brochu is very easy to listen to and has a good sense of humor. I enjoyed his class, even though the class was not entirely easy. It's obvious that he is very passionate about what he says which I appreciated.
I have Brochu for Age of Dinosaurs, which I took for a Natural science gen ed. He puts powerpoints online but there's no info on them, so you HAVE to come to class. He makes lectures pretty easy to sit through; you just copy information down in your notes. Nothing too hard, the midterms are pretty basic, as long as you study, you should get an AB.
I went into this class hearing it was pretty hard, but I passed with a B+ and that was with no studying for the tests. I did, however, attend every single lecture and lab because if you skip then you're screwed. Overall it was an interesting class, but then again I only took it for a Gen Ed.
I was ecstatic to find out I could take a class about dinosaurs instead of chemistry. I'd do it again in a heartbeat. I did an honors lab and it was still really easy, we always got out early. You definitely have to show up to lecture but it's always a fun time. Dr. Brochu has a great sense of humor. Also, no textbook, just an $11 coursepack.
You definitely have to come to class. He's a nice guy, his lectures are random at times and you really have to put a lot of time into studying for tests. The good part is that the labs are ridiculously easy- bad part is that this class applies to nothing in real life. Wasn't a bad time though, it was interesting.
Brochu is absolutely amazing. I had him for a first year honors seminar and his passion really comes out in his lectures. Even though a majority of the seminar is him talking at you, he makes it very interesting and very easy to ask questions. Take. Any. Class. Of. His. You won't regret it.
You can tell he's passionate about what he teaches so it makes learning more enjoyable.
Goes off on tangents so often you never know when to actually be taking notes or not. Humble brags all the time. So full of himself. Thinks he's the only scientist who knows anything. There is no textbook so unless you take notes like a court reporter you're going to struggle. If you don't have a mind for memorization, do not take this class.
Age of Dinosaurs is hands down my favorite class, Dr. Brochu is amazing and makes the lectures really interesting. TAs are also incredibly helpful, especially Adam, and labs are easy, but you have to go to lectures and labs or you'll be completely lost
I've enjoyed Dr. Brochu's lectures more than any other lecture course I've taken. He has a real passion for his area and he is an entertaining lecturer. He's not afraid to use foul language or go off topic every once in a while. Highly recommend this course to fulfill the science with lab gen-ed.
An engaging lecturer, he doesn't shy away from political/religious topics and is blunt about his views, which I could imagine might irk those of a certain political persuasion. As far as the class goes, you need to be capable of memorization, much of the tests hinge on features of different dinosaurs. A solid gen-ed, good for non-STEM majors.
It seems like you either love the class or hate it. I found it quite enjoyable and would recommend it for anyone who needs the science with a lab Gen Ed
Every person I talked to before said this class was easy. Maybe I'm just really bad at studying, but the tests are not simple. He goes extremely quickly over slides and doesn't share them online. The lab portion is the easiest part, but I definitely wouldn't want to take this class again.
Had him for Age of Dinosaurs--which grades on easy worksheet labs, 3 quizzes, and 3 tests. Puts an entertaining spin on lectures. Don't recommend if you require study guides--he doesn't give them--or have trouble applying knowledge (which is a big part of tests). Really good lab/science class for non-science majors.
Honestly, this is a good class to take if you aren't a science person but you need to get your gen ed out of the way. If you go to lectures and put in minimal work you should do well. The labs are super easy. I'd suggest doing the reading before you go to lab because everything will make way more sense.
Age of Dinos, beware: you will not get away with putting in minimal work. You must be able to apply knowledge quickly, the hardest part of quizzes and tests is running out of time. The class is just anatomy and rote memorization. Knowledge not applicable out of class, which sucks, but labs are easy and take about an hour, not three.
He likes to make student lives difficult; the lectures he uploads have no text and are therefore useless, only gives you ten minutes to finish semi-involved quizzes, and puts quizzes on the day before break because "it's a scheduled class time," (yes, we get it, but do you really have no empathy? people have flights and travel plans, man).
Brochu is goofy and opinionated, but knows his stuff. He uploads his slides without words, so go to lecture. You probably won't do well on the first quiz, but they get easier. He and his TAs are helpful and want you to succeed. I really appreciated Amanda. Easy, short labs with only a $12 course pack required. Great lab science for non-STEM majors!
Brochu's jokes will get students laughing and he clearly has a deep appreciation/love for what he's teaching. But, he's old school. Lecture wasn't mandatory, but if you miss it, you'll miss important notes (Advice: make friends/a group chat). Tests are dense, but kinda easy. If you put in the bare minimum for studying, you'll get by with a C or B.
I usually do pretty well in school and I did terribly in this course. Lots of people cheated on the exams since it's online, and it's a curved grade so I guess I should have too. Funny guy who clearly knows his stuff. The tests barely had anything to do with the lectures. DO NOT take this class if you don't have to and you care about your GPA
Just don't take
Took this class as my gen ed with a lab, which was good as labs were quick (only about an hour) and generally fairly easy. However, if you're expecting to learn fun dino facts, run. This class is insanely in-depth, and is wrote memorization of mostly dinosaur evolution. Not terrible, but Brochu has little regard for students struggle and plows on
literally he makes no sense. do not take this class. there's only 3 tests and so you have to do good on all of them and it will screw you over. his lectures are confusing, his directions are unclear. no one in this class gets him. he's annoying and dry and angry all the time.
The most unnecessarily difficult gen-ed I have taken. His lectures have no clear direction and he doesn't post his completed slides anywhere, so you have to be super vigilant in taking notes while watching. Exams ask cherry picked questions that are inconsistent with what he says to expect. He is also just rude. Huge nuisance of a class - avoid it.
If you're looking for an easy Science w/ Lab course, don't take this class. To start, there isn't a textbook and most of the stuff that's on the tests will come from lectures, and he doesn't release the lecture slides under any circumstances. Don't get caught recording his lectures. Also, he's really annoying if that matters.
His lectures are pretty good and he is always willing to help students during office hours. Can come off as a little rude, but it's not intended. The tests can be difficult because there is a lot of information, and the information given during lecture is not posted so attendence is crucial.
Brochu seems very passionate about what he is teaching and really seems to want you to learn. He can sometimes come off as harsh, but he means well. The exams were online and closed note and he did not offer any form of study guide. It's very important to go to his lectures and take detailed notes as the test questions are mainly memorization.
Knew a lot of information. Would not slow down or give powerpoint slides to students. Seemed off-putting due to his lack of compassion for student's success. Would not recommend taking this course. Would recommend paying attention in class if you do take this course, it will greatly help!
Hard time knowing what to study before a test. Huge on memorization Curve makes the class impossible to calculate and know where you are Studying is almost near impossible because there is no clear expectation of what to know before a quiz or exam
I went into this class knowing the reviews from other students were questionable. This class isn't for the faint of heart, it's a lot of work and lectures are basically required since notes aren't posted. If you WANT to take the class, you will definitely get a lot out of it, Brochu is incredibly knowledgeable and his lectures were never boring.
Professor Brochu is funny, nice, and very passionate about his subject. This class was just graded on attendance and participation. One thing to be aware of for this seminar Lost Worlds and Monsters is more about paleontology than mythology so you learn mostly about the fossils that myths.
I just don't think he is a nice person. I went to his office hours and he had the same rude energy one on one as he presents in class. This is like a legit Dino class, you don't learn fun facts to give your friends. You learn the anatomy of dinosaurs and what bone structures change over time. Do NOT take this as a gen-ed. It brought down my GPA.
Chris is a good professor. He is clearly an expert on teaching about dinosaurs. As someone who knows almost nothing about dinosaurs, he made the subject interesting. You must go to lectures since the tests are all lecture notes. Don't take if you aren't willing to work hard. Do take if you want to learn about the evolution of dinosaurs.
DO NOT TAKE. The only good part about this class is easy and has 25-minute labs. Comes off as a jerk who knows everything. Does not post lecture slides. Oftentimes would not go back to slides if asked to. 0 test study material. The tests are extremely difficult. TAs are the sole reason this class is not a complete nightmare.
STEM has never come easily 4 me. U have 2 study 4 the exams - not excessively. If U understand basics, U will score above the class average bc the info U need is on the exam. He's a little stubborn w/ SDS accoms. If U need help, GO TO OFFICE HOURS! Talk 2 him in-person (not b4/after lecture). He's great and is 100% willing to help.
Very lecture heavy, but not impossible if you pay attention and really study dinosaur anatomy. Guy loves crocodiles a lot.
Chris is very knowledgeable in this field & it shows. Attendance not required, but it is STRONGLY suggested that you go! All the information for the exams and homework is only available through the lectures, so pay attention and take notes even if what he's saying isn't on the slides. He has a dry sense of humor that adds some fun to class.
Do not take this class for a gen-ed. Pick a different class!!! Professor is nice but class is graded solely on quizzes/exams & lab. Lab is easy but you are only given 10 minutes for quizzes which is absurd! Exams are unusually hard no matter how hard or what you study.
This class was challenging; you take two midterms, a final, and three quizzes. They are all on paper and consist of multiple choice and free response. The quizzes were the hardest part; you had ten minutes to complete them. Then, the exams, minus the final, you had 50 minutes, and with the graphs to look at for questions, I never had enough time.
Mainly debunk mythical creatures by looking at fossils. At the end of the semester, we had to argue that an extinct creature wasn't extinct, which was fun. Everything was group projects, and you stayed in the same group the entire semester. Lots of work outside of class to make presentations, but you have the whole week. Overall easy and fun.
Probably the best first year seminar you could take. Nearly no homework, learned some cool things about fossils and prehistoric creatures. Always looked forward to the class. Prof. Brochu clearly really knows his stuff and is happy to share his knowledge. Funny guy.
Attendance is a must but if you pay attention, take notes, and study you should do just fine. Very interesting course material and Chris is a funny and knowledgeable professor. I would recommend if you liked dinosaurs as a kid and want to learn more, haha
Ouu I have so many things to say about this grandpa
Chris is... difficult. Attendance is mandatory, you will not be able to make up course material. No access 2 lab slides, no words on lecture slides, graded for spelling, no study guides/review days, no taking pictures of slides. just pay attention to the words on the slides and what's on quizes - this is your study guide.COURSE PACKET IS KEY
If you're taking this class as a gen ed... DON'T! Attendance isn't mandatory but he doesn't upload lecture slides and has his ICON page is blank. If you get a good TA, labs are great. Your overall grade is determined by three exams and three quizzes but he doesn't give you an idea of what to study and says that he "doesn't know what it will cover"
Do not miss the lecture. He does not upload lecture or lab slides, and you are not allowed to take pictures of slides during the lecture. You will have a couple of exams and quizzes, which will determine your whole grade.
Loves to yap, but at least it's interesting. Only thing you're graded on are simple group presentations every other week, but they are very simple to do. Doesn't grade on anything else.
