This professor Sucks....Do not take his class you will fail the course. He doesn't explain the material well. Worst ever!!!
This professor does not teach but makes you sit through video and that is suppose to take the lecture. Notes and lectures are unclear. If you want to fail and have you GPA lowered then I recommend him.
He is not that bad of a teacher. He started off the semester unclear but then opened up and was more clear and helpful. If you take that class with him, I recommend you ask questions and ask him to repeat info if you don't understand. You will pass.
This man is the absolute worse. He is unclear, unorganized, unhelpful, and a bit of an a**. Please choose someone else for this course
Funny thing,i actually read the material and since he clearly states that he doesnt feel the need to lecture about something weve already read, i dont feel that i missed out on anything in the classroom. I passed with an A because the tests were straight from the book! My class participation was 0!
Was to dam hard for an intro class
At first I thought the class was ok. I mean I love learning about African American Music. However, I feel he exected to much from an Introduction Class. You learn a lot, but you need have time to listen to songs for your lsitneing quiz. Boring lectures, but you should do well.
He is very intense and knowlegeable of his subject matter. We have a shared love of music. Also his senior seminar, Women of Africa, was great. For all those whining about the classes being hard intro classes...buck up! It's intro to University courses not High School. I agree that if you need clarification, ask for it. He'll gladly repeat for you.

the class is interesting but you have to really spend time for this one class. he gave you all the notes you need to know for the test, but he talks fast and gets mad if you ask him to repeat something. i got an "A" in the class b/c i can take good notes and studied hard. really, it's alot to learn for a 200 level class.
Very helpful, excellent subject and good teacher!
I had this guy my first year of college- what a jerk! Then, the grading system was awful, but I guess its ok now. The only reason I'm rating him is because I repeated the course with Dr. Rowe and he had the nerve to come in as a 'guest' speaker. Whatever, hes still a jerk. Dr. Rowe is much better!
The worst prof ever!! Talks at 800wpm, gets an attitude if you as him to repeat and not very helpful. I compared my tests t another students and they were almost identical...i got a C she got a B. When I asked him about it, he snatched my paper and wrote B on it...A JERK might i add. Please, do yourself a favor and stay away from his classes
We had class "discussions" during which he would present a question, and if what we said wasn't the answer he was looking for he would say, "hrm..well, no, I don't think...hrm...let's try someone else--" Obviously no room for free thinking in this potentially very interesting course. AVOID.
I recommend against taking Anthropology with Professor Brooks. His classes are entirely filler; he either teaches out of the book, or screens videos that tend to be irrelevant to the subject. He enforces overly strict rules, and acts in a condescending manner towards students. Avoid, if possible.
You go into anthropology thinking it will be a really interesting class, but Brooks ruins everything about it. If you miss one class your letter grade is dropped, 3 and they say they will withdraw you and you are failing. He does not go over material in class, when he does it is limited and it was usually his T.A. Tests are straight out of the book
NOT FAIR AT ALL! How is it fair that almost the entire class recieves D's and F's on an exam and nothing is done. Then he has the nerve to say he wants people to pass and he cares about our grades. His grading is unfair, and when you bring it to his attention he refuses to help you and suggests that you withdraw from the class. GRRR!!
Comes off as arrogant & rigid, but loves his subject & is actually a good guy. Runs 2 study sessions on his own time to help with the exams & always gives help & answers questions. Demands respect & is particular about his class & attendance, but this is a good class & you can get an A by listening to the music & paying attention in class.
he basically doesn't teach. just poses a question and allows the students to voice their opinions. it's interesting, but totally irrelevant to what we need to learn. and his attendance policy is so strict. miss one day, your grade drops a letter. miss 2, and you're notified to the admin or whatever. harsh.
He is a very passionate person, but also hard headed. He expects a lot from his students. Don't be rude, don't come late, and do not miss classes. Your grade reflects participation. His tests are hard, so try to go to the SI sessions.
Dr. Brooks is a good professor. He comes off very confusing at first but he is a real nice guy. He has a lot of knowledge under his belt and you can learn alot if you try. This is not a easy class, but I really enjoyed the class. You will not just sit and listen to music. The exams are blue book and you have listening quizes.
Dr. Brooks is an awesome teacher. He is the first teacher I've come across that actually expects his students to learn and know something. This class is not for punks. If you're not going to do the work then it's not for you. He even personally holds study groups before each test, but not a lot of people show up (ironically the ones who complain)
This class was not easy. Not at all. Be ready to put a lot of time into studying and listening to his music. He comes off very arrogant at first but is a good teacher. Just do you work and study. There are no short cuts in this class.
As long as you go to every class and study hard for the tests you'll get a B. He doesn't lecture but shows really boring PBS movies instead for the two and half hours you are in there. Go to the study sessions because that is where you'll learn everything you need to know for the test.
Prof. Brooks is an ok person but he is always showing a lot of crazy videos for most of the class and is so obsessed with Africa that he talks about it non-stop. The tests are hard and he doesn't lecture at all. Go to the SI sessions if you want to pass.
he hardly teaches, shows a movie EVERY class then does discussions about the movie, totally irrelevant to test info. if you want to pass this class go to the SI sessions before the test. the TA's go over ALL the info on the test and pretty much hand you the answers. I have learned more from the TA then i have from him.
He is intense. He definitely takes his class very seriously, and expects you to as well. Studying is necessary but reading the texts books is not. He is easily angered by any disruption to his lecture, but is generally a nice guy. If you like to skip class do NOT take any of his classes.
VERY VERY hard teacher. Class baically consists of you reading the book before and every class and then dicussing it. He makes his TA's teach the class basically. If you miss ONE class your grade is dropped a letter grade. He expects alot out of you. If you do chose this class attend all S.I sessions its helps a little.
i am an A/B student overall. i took this class because it was a 100 level class and i needed a GPA booster. NOT. this class is extremely interesting. he does alot on HIV/AIDS which i strangely found interesting, but the tests are not on lecture or reading. alot of filler during lectures, alot of irrelevant discussion.
Worst Professor in the world. He is extremely vain and ****, all he does in class is show films, he never teaches and is very rude to his students. His test aren't that hard if you read but he will drop you a letter grade if you miss a class!!!
3 things you need to have before coming to this class: Respect, Knowledge of the Reading, and an Open-Mind. All that texting, facebook, chatting, getting up and leaving stuff doesn't fly in his class, and it shouldn't in any class for that matter. The typical undergrad at VCU wouldn't like this course, because they're immature & have no respect.
Don't skip class and read the book
By far the worst Professor I have ever had. Dr. Brooks is incredibly vain. He expects his classes to be the center of students lives and cares more about them texting than learning. I was excited to take Anthropology but he completely ruined the experience. He makes his TA do everything, its as if his Anthro 103 students aren't worthy of his time.
Dr.Brooks is a cool person if you get to know him outside of class. He only gave three test and a paper (which was a review of his book which is really interesting). You have to read the book and we watched a video every class (T 4-6:40)never stayed in class the whole time and must attend review session with TA to pass! have to take a lot of notes
Tests are super easy!! Make sure you go to study sessions with the TA's as those make it even easier. dr Brooks also is a world expert on Africa and he shows movies every class and lets class out early so we like get out of class usually around 5:45pm or 6
Do not take Dr. Brooks if you don't have to. Extremely high level of reading for a 100-level class. A commenter before had it right that he expects you to devote all your attention to his class. Also has a habit of talking down to his students.
This teacher was AMAZING! Absolutely loved his class. He requires a lot of reading, but his lectures were accompanied by discussions. He requires you to read the book he wrote, which is interesting, and when I couldn't afford the book he let me borrow one of his copies. He's a very understanding teacher if nothing else.
Jerk, plain and simple. Making students buy an overpriced book he wrote that we didn't use for anything other than a reflection-I view that as exploitation. His harsh statements were sometimes inappropriate, including the tone of voice used and his tests were not suited for an intro class. Miss one class-Go down a letter grade.
Do not take his course, he teaches directly from the book than makes you watch long documentaries and than gives you 3 exams, and 3 grades for the entire semester. Also, his exams are EXTREMELY difficult. My class was the top ranking among everyone he taught and our average was a 75. He shows little respect for students and makes you buy his book.
Incredibly rude to students.
Do not take this class. He gives 3 exams, all extremely difficult and based on information he doesn't cover. He also makes you write a paper on his own book. He doesn't use blackboard. Worst professor. Don't take him if you don't have to.
His study guides made by his assistants are useless. The tests do not cover any in class material. Half of the time he rambles about pointless things during lectures. 70% of the lectures are documentaries. Avoid this man at all costs.
He is an awful teacher. His attendance policies are EXTREMELY STRICT and going to class feels like a waste of time since all you will do is watch documentaries. He doesn't answer questions and constantly yells at students. Avoid taking his class if you can, but if you have to make sure to do the study guides and go to all the T.A. led sessions.
In my three years as a full time college student, Dr. Brooks is by far the worst teacher I have ever had. He does not teach. He requires you to buy his own book (that has nothing to do with the class), and tests you on it. He is extremely rude. Some of his behavior can be classified as harassment. Exam averages for all of his classes fall at a D.
I thought that the class was pretty interesting. We always have in class discussion and actually get to watch some pretty cool documentaries (my favorite way to learn, i watch those things on my own anyways). The study guides are helpful for the most part, I haven't gotten any bad grades myself, but I hear many complaints from classmates.
Dr. Brooks has has to be one of VCUs most rudest wise a** prof. I had him for one of his topics class which was interesting because he let the class have dialogue. I highly encourage you to read all the assignments to know whats going on. Please turn in his term paper on time b/c he will fail you and now I'm waiting to see if I passed the class.
Good at what he does, NOT as a teacher. Calls on students just for the purpose of it and this greatly detracts from experience. Lecture does not add at all. Lowers grade a ltr for abscence. Makes you buy and read his book (Ch 1-10) during semester but write an essay on the half of the book he DOESNT require you to read. Avoid at all costs.
Very strict, especially on attendance. He's an awful lecturer - no clarity, no direction. Tests can be challenging, you need to read the textbook to do well.
Dr. Brooks is by far one of the worst teachers I've ever had the misfortune of having. He's extremely rude and handles situations poorly. He takes attendance every class and drops you a letter grade for each class you miss - DO NOT SKIP. His class grade is based off of 3 exam grades (30% e) and attendance (10%). AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
Disrespectful to students, plain and simple. He makes you pay for and read HIS book which is meant for African Studies class and not for Anthropology, and only cares about Africa. Makes you read his book and the Anthropology book. The test questions focus on confusing questions from his book. Awful professor, and not a good person.
On most occasions when I have had a bad experience with a professor I let it slide but, I found Professor Brooks to be awful. His discussions are boring and have almost no use on the test. He relies heavily on the textbook and the supplement book he wrote. I would suggest taking anyone other than him for Anthropology.
I took Dr. Brook's Intro to African Societies class. Obviously he is strict, and expects the best out of you. You paid for the class so you should attend anyway. DON'T USE YOUR PHONE IN CLASS. Be nice to him, ask for help when you need it, and respect him. He is very knowledgeable about African culture and I have found it all very interesting!
Brooks is the absolute WORST professor I have ever encountered here at VCU. Extremely rude to his students, relies HEAVILY on text, makes you read his book -- fits more with african studies, not anth (irrelevant), so strict on attendance, interrupts students when talking, lectures are all over the place. TAKE ANYONE BUT HIM!!!
He may be knowledgeable, but he is really rude and and strict. Attendance is mandatory and he will call on people if no one wants to really participate in discussions. You're graded on 3 exams and a final assignment on a book he wrote about HIV in South Africa. This class was ridiculous and more difficult than it needed to be. Just don't take it.
Grades are not posted in timely manner, interesting lectures cover very little tested material, attendance is crucial , many documentaries to watch and are used as test material. Smart man. Good class discussion. All irrelevant when it comes down to test time.
I took Intro to Anthropology, and learned a lot. He showed interesting films, and I found his lectures stimulating. His tests were not easy by any means, but the study guides he provided helped me immensely. He's very strict. Don't be late. Don't bring your cell. Guys, take your hats off BEFORE you enter the classroom. I got a B.
WORST PROFESSOR AT VCU, avoid at all costs. He bases your final grade in this class on 2 things only. One grade being an essay style exam that he expects you to have exact answers for questions that are majorly subjective. The other grade is a 15pg research paper due at the end of the semester. He grades horrifically and is entirely unfair.
Brooks is awful. We had to read a book he wrote that was about HIV totally irrelevant to Anthropology. I'm an art student and had a restrictive schedule so I couldn't attend any of the extra credit and review sessions, if you can't do extra time you'll fail. If you miss a class your grade drops, I missed 2 classes and FAILED.
Confusing, often contradicting the textbook in the exams themselves, asking vaguely defined questions that could be answered in multiple ways, or sometimes are not adequately addressed by any of the answers. I don't know how he is with smaller classes, but he is not suited to teaching large classes.
awesome class !
dr. brooks is pretty condescending and usually insists you have the exact answer that he would give although most questions are subjective. also the wording and context in which he asks questions on tests are beyond confusing and meant to trick you.don't take dr. brooks.
This is a a hard and very boring class. You hardly do anything with anthropology, almost all of the class is listening to Dr. Brooks go on and on about his book. The tests and quizzes are hard as well with no direction. He also comes across on the rude side. Overall I would not recommend this class
I am a senior taking this class as an elective & he is hands down the rudest & WORST professor I have ever had. Whenever anyone speaks out of turn instead of just saying 'excuse me' or just turning silent, he will repeat what he was saying louder & LOUDER until they stop talking. I regret taking this class & I advice you not to take it.
I'm a senior and have had much worse experiences than this class. But this is not a class for people who aren't willing to work hard and pay attention. The quizzes and tests are EASY if you do the reading and pay attention to when he emphasizes things, otherwise no way. Compared to 300 level classes I have taken this is a piece of cake.
By far the worst teacher I ever have taken, had to speak to the world studies dean and have things addressed. I have dealt with culinary school with chefs yelling at me and much more stress, but professor Brooks should no longer teach or handle anything with students. He doesn't post grades or even let you know where you stand academically. He also
While Dr. Brooks is knowledgable, his lectures are not very interesting. 75% of your final grade comes from 3 exams, which the class as a whole typically does not do well on. I study the study guide thoroughly and get in the 80s if I'm lucky. The rest of the grade comes from weekly quizzes, which also don't go over well, and a paper.
Read! His lectures are boring but you must pay attention. Reading is the most important and following the outlines. Attendance isn't mandatory but sometimes in class videos are shown that might be on a quiz or test. Not very clear or helpful. Quiz every week, and test are hard. About 2 assignments besides quiz and test.
Awful Professor. Doesn't care about students, wants book sales. Some of the things he talks about don't even involve the class.
He is so inspiring and always willing to help me with anything. I've never had him for 103. Take his Topics class or African studies. He is a serious academic and expects his students to apply themselves. If he knows you are trying he extends deadlines. He is one of those professors who gives you the tools you need for the real world.
Little connection to online class. He is obviously philosophy versed but so much so you can hardly decipher what is is asking of you. I've had to have several people read his requests to even figure out how to respond. It seems you can do well in his class if you just ramble thoughts of the subject. No lecture. Highly disappointed.
Dr. Brooks is a very passionate and talented professor. The class was very engaging and eye opening as he is genuinely interested in student's interpretations of the readings and offers very useful feedback without being critical. I wish he was still teaching this course!!
Horrible class. Horrible professor.
If you have a chance to take one of his classes over the summer, do it! He's an extremely fascinating guy, and especially in a smaller environment he has a lot of engaging discussions. He makes you excited to come to class, even in the summer, and he is very clear on what he expects. The class is an easy A if you actually attend class and focus.
Dr. Brooks is one of those people who at times has a hard time getting their thoughts across because they are just that intelligent. He is incredibly experienced and passionate about his work though, which really showed in African Societies. His tests are incredibly easy as long as you take notes and study. I got a 103 on exam 1 and a 105 on exam 2
I found him to be very condescending an rude about a lot of small things that weren't even course related. I wouldn't recommend taking this with him.
How on earth does VCU allow this piece of garbage to teach? I'm convinced that any of the positive posts made on this site are done by Brooks himself. Something is wrong with this condescending, arrogant creature and he deserves to be canned ASAP. VCU simply shouldn't tolerate his demeaning, condescending attitude.
If I would have read more I probably would've gotten a better grade however he is very hard for an intro course and we had quizzes almost every class it felt. Attendance truly matters seeing as you don't want to skip a quiz or anything "valuable" he says
Dr. Brooks is incredibly intelligent but a lot of the time he was unclear. If he's searching for an answer you have to be specific or he'll make you look stupid in front of the whole class.
Dr. Brooks is not made for lecture. One of the mandatory text books was one he wrote himself, he was never clear in his lectures, he just kind of rambled the entire class and then gave a quiz at the end. Best part is my first exam was "lost" and wasn't found until I questioned my grade. His TA basically did everything for him but lecture.
Honestly the worst professor I have ever had. Impossible to understand, incredibly squeaky, loud, rude, obnoxious, off-topic. Makes you buy his book so he can make money off of the class, repetitive, will start a sentence and then half way through, "rephrase" and completely contradict what he had begun to say. Never gave extra credit as promised
He's a very intelligent man and he's pretty funny, but he's also very strict and I'm kinda scared of him tbh. Tests are kinda hard but the class is easily passible. Not a lot of homework and it helps your grade a lot to do it.
This man scares me, he always randomly calls on people in class to answer questions. Even if you answer the question correctly, he will make mumbled reply and say it's wrong in front of the entire class. He also hands out exams individually in alphabetical order, which takes FOREVER. He also doesn't articulate well or go over definitions.
The biggest issue: the study guides do not at all match the content of the exams. I am aware that study guides are not mandatory, but if you give one and expect us to go over it, make it relevant. Also gets off on making his students feel dumb for asking relevant questions. This should be an easy course but he makes it so difficult. Don't take him.
Not the worst thing ever but definitely makes the class way harder then it seems. 75 percent of the grade came from 3 exams which are all a lot tougher then they should be . I studied for each exam and understood the material and still got a C and D on the first two exams. I was able to get an A on the last exam only because of an Si session.
He seems like an intellectual guy; but he comes off as arrogant a lot. Also he makes the class way harder than it should be. Its 100 level not graduate school for crying out loud.
The 220 level course is almost entirely about student-lead discussions, so lectures were few and far between. Be ready to read a chapter or a few before every class, and there is the occasional paper (which aren't too hard). He's not very timely with inputting grades, but I honestly don't know why he has such a bad reputation on here.
This is the first time I've ever rated a professor, he's genuinely that bad. AVOID IF POSSIBLE
Awful professor. Absolutely terrible at furthering discussions, only accepts answers if they are exactly what he had in mind. The tests are far harder than they should be for an elective at this level. He is arrogant. He may be intelligent in anthro, but I do not believe he is adept socially as he would be better at making students comfortable.
STAY AWAY! Worst online class! Random pop-quizzes. Exams asking for typed definitions, fill in the blank and essay. Very few multiple choice. No feedback for why you loose points for discussions. Blackboard technical difficulties that result in an impact on my grade. Trust me, stay away from this professor! Especially his online class!!!!!!
Doctor Brooks is an amazing professor. It took me a few weeks to warm up to his teaching style but after I did, I seriously loved it. Take time with your response papers and ask for feedback. The first one is kind of a test to see what he wants so BE SPECIFIC and ask for clear instructions. Office hours are specific but worth stopping by with q's.
One of the worst professors I've ever had. In this class, he didn't teach or lecture at all, so I barely learned anything. All the classes are either a group discussion based on the chapter(s) read or a debate. He grades as if this is a grad school level course and he is disrespectful to students.
Absolutely avoid!! He is arrogant and terrible at teaching. He grades the class like its a phd program.
he is the worst professor i have ever had in my whole life. he is so rude and arrogant to the students, please avoid taking him for anthropolgy.
Do not take any class with Dr. Brooks. He treats students like they are inferior, talks over them, takes over the conversation when they're supposed to be leading it, and more. His grading is awful, he doesn't give any feedback on papers, and he doesn't post grades until the end of the semester. Unless you're an Anth major, do not take this class.
Professor Brooks does not teach. All the classes are either discussions led by the students or debates, LED BY THE STUDENTS. I'm taking class in the time of COVID so it could easily be different in person but I found professor Brooks so condescending and made me cry many times after class. Would absolutely NOT take his class again.
I was fine with keeping up with the due dates (During COVID) online and making sure things got done, but Dr. Brooks' syllabus was not updated to the current year, and this led to confusing moments where I'm not even sure if I've done all the assignments. He doesn't respond to emails and doesn't update grades. Don't take this class
Do not take unless you want to feel terribly about yourself. His expectations for students to answer questions that are informed when he refuses to teach anything but his outdated opinions and tooting his own horn are beyond me. How he expects students to succeed in his hostile environment astounds me. He will laugh at your responses w/o explaining
have never struggled in anthropology classes but I would not describe this as a class, more like an arena where Dr. Brooks shoots you down for funsies. He never mentioned administratively withdrawing students from class until randomly he decided to with out any warning. It is not worth wasting your time or money to teach yourself this hard material
Took his Survey of World Pandemics. The course is discussion based and class led. We had a few readings and documentaries to watch and then discuss. If you hate socratic seminars then don't take this class. Our final grade is based on 3 projects, which I personally enjoy. He's really nice in person and isn't afraid to challenge your opinion.
Professor Brooks is extremely disrespectful to his students. I was in his survey class and all of the class material was gathered from the internet. I did not learn anything from this class. It is a class with "ok" difficulty however his attitude is hard to work with.
Online class, Has lectures are obviously years old. Discussion forums biased off 1-4 hour videos from the 90's to early 2000's. VERY OUTDATED.(exam #3 was titled as summer 2019 )TAKES 20% OFF grade if its late!! and you get a ZERO if its over two days late. You have to buy HIS book AND a textbook. He messed up my and took over a month to correct.
75% of grade based on 3 exams: few multiple choice, 1 essay question, explain 10 concepts 90 min. 4 doc were a waste of time, I watched them all, still did bad on quiz Quizzes are difficult, only 5-7 questions on random chapters. Difficult class I managed to get an A by doing well on the exams. Doing entire study guide waste of time, just do half.
Horrible professor, was very disrespectful and unprofessional. Was not easy to communicate with outside of class. Do not recommend anyone take a class with this professor
After seeing everyone's reviews, I hesitated to take his class, but I loved the course. It was pretty easy, just read a chapter or two for homework, then discuss them during class. There were 3 "big" assignments, which consisted of answering 3-4 questions in detail. The hardest part of the class was the debates, but it's not as bad as you think.
I took his Survey of World Pandemics class and 100% would not recommend this prof. We taught ourselves the whole course. Participation is 40% of the overall grade. He gives extra points to his favorite students. He seems to enjoy belittling his students and putting everyone down. My therapist thinks he's a narcissist, and I think that sums it up.
The professor has a unique teaching style, though it may not work for everyone. Engagement is key, but be prepared for a challenging discussion-based class. unstuck study was a lifesaver for study prep.
Do not listen to anything you see on Dr. Brooks' rate my professor. He is an amazing professor that curated a very inclusive environment for proper discussion. After taking this course I am simply confused with his RMP profile. The work was manageable and I loved going to every single class.
What is said about this Professor is untrue from my experience. Dr. Brooks is caring and facilitates his class through discussion and introspection of your own beliefs. Not once did I fret going to his class and I always felt comfortable. I took this class for honors credit at VCU, ended up being my favorite. Thank you Dr. Brooks!!!
Nothing positive I can say about this *man*. I'm confused as to how he is allowed the power he is given. He is arrogant and disrespectful. He needs counseling and dismissed from his position. It appears that he gets away with his demeanor toward students. He gouges students by making them purchase his textbook.
He harassed and demeaned our classmates. He will have to answer to God regarding his behavior. His book was written by an uneducated child.
