He sucks as a teacher. Nice man but cant teach worth a lick! If you savor your GPA, stay away from his classes!
He's enthusiastic about his job, and in philosophy courses that makes a world of diiference. You WILL learn in his classes, but stay away if you're not prepared to give any effort.
Maybe too enthusiastic! Many times gets caught up in his mind in thinking during class, and it's kind of funny. Overall pretty easy and easy-going. pretty helpful and nice
Very good teacher. Gave me a B when I should have had an A, so class participation really counts with this guy. I enjoyed the class and learned a great deal though.
He's a very nice guy but is too smart to be teaching. He knows a lot about different philosophers and expects his students to already know certain information, even if most may not.
very good professor
He is so excited to be teaching philosphy. He is a nice guy and if you take notes and study, you'll do good. Not real hard
stay away!!!!!!! if he got his head out of socrates and aristotle and whether or not God exists, he might see some truth!
He is an all right teacher if you just come to class and take the notes...you have to think a little on the questions of the tests but he is not hard overall and a really nice guy!!
Dr. Brown is a very nice guy. His tests aren't long but require a good bit of studying. If you don't want to learn, don't take him.
stay away from his classes. can not teach worth a lick
if you want to keep your gpa -- find someone else!!!!!!!!!!
Excellent teacher. If you want an easy A, he's not your best bet, but if you want to learn and care about the subject matter, he's the best in the department.
He is a very good teacher, but do not come to his class expecting an easy grade. You must be ready to do work. His tests are very direct and comprehensive. Outside of class, he is a very nice and helpful person. I would reccommend this teacher to anyone.
very confusing
get someone else!!!!!!
the worst!!!!!!!!!!!
he has himself confused!!!!!!!
go elsewhere if you savor your gpa!!!!!!!!!111
Dr. Brown is a great teacher and a great person in general. He actually acts you to think which may be offensive to some students, but we are here to learn and he makes sure that that happens. Dr. Brown is very helpful to anyone who is willing to ask.
He's a nice guy and very helpful. It seems like he tries to confuse you on tests and quizzes. Must be really prepared for them.
Takes philosophy much more seriously than anyone i've ever seen. tests dont ask questions, they ask around questions.
Hard to understand, rushes thru things. Emphasises things and u spend forever on some, but anything interesting is rushed.
He is a good teacher. Don't expect to get an A you have to study and be prepared. Test are not hard if you study. He is very helpful if you just ask.
He really knows his stuff...he thinks we all are phil majors and thats not good. His tests are very tricky!! You really have to study for them. However, hes a great teacher and very helpful!
Tests are hard and very tricky. Interesting teacher.
boring, confusing..take someone else if at all possible.
He is an okay teacher that knows material very well. Tests and quizzes are very tricky. Study as much as possible. Try to avoid him if you can.
Dr. Brown was a wonderful teacher. You are going to have to study pretty hard but you will learn so much under him. I have learned more in this class than all others combined. Quizzes can be tricky at times but as long as you come to class, take good notes and study, you should do fine.
He was a good professor. He really cares about what he's talking about, but is sometimes hard to follow. Really studey for his tests and you will do fine.
Avoid him if possible. He enjoys what he's teaching, but tests and quizzes are tricky, making it very difficult to get an A.
All I can say is if you have anny interest in this class take it with someone else. He is hard and way out there.
Gets to know majors and non-majors alike. Is he hard, yeah. Is he clear, sometimes. One negativei s that he teaches you as if you are a philosophy major. He tries to make everyone in his classes love phil. as much as he does. Tests in upper division are all essay format, lower is multi. choice.

This class is something that you really have to study for, but he is a passionate teacher. When he grades his tests he is lenient. He only takes off half a point on everyone you miss. If you are in the habit skipping class alot, I would advise you not to take his class. Every class period we discuss something that will be on the test.
this class makes no sense yet eveyone has to have it.
Dr. Brown really wants you to do well in his class and if you let him know that he will make sure you do. You will have to study for the exams but he really doesn't ask for too much outside of that. The quizzes are always easy and a good way to boost your grade.
Dr. B: eager to explain things in multiple ways both in & out of class; demanding in that the student must know the material; very reasonable in the amount of time his class requires; difficult, thought-requiring tests, but do-able if you take thorough notes & do the study guides (which are very practical); don't ever skip; A+ teacher, A+ class!
Dr. Brown is the most difficult professor to take in the philosophy department; don't take him if you want an easy 'A.' On the other hand, do take him if you enjoy being challenged intellectually and want to learn alot about difficult ideas. You'll also learn that a complaint with a misspelling really isn't a complaint: 'everyone'
Dr. Brown is nothing short of amazing, from the hot gotee to his knowledge of...um, EVERYTHING. Don't take him if you're not willing to go to class, but if you put forth the slightest bit of effort, he is not at all difficult. He gets to know his students and goes out of his way to see that those who work are rewarded for it. You will learn a lot!
i had him for ethics. he is an awesome professor and very nice. yes you have to do work.. and think but hello you are in college to do that. he is the best philosophy teacher in the department. he always plays with his goatee haha! very philosophy like.
By far the most difficult professor I've ever had. Three exams cover all material (and then some) discussed in class. READING INTENSIVE!!! You have to read about 2hrs worth of material for each class meeting. The tests cover so much obscure material that it's nearly impossible to study adequately. If you're not a Philosophy major, FORGET IT!
I thought his class was hard. The tests are hard, but the way he grades them isn't that bad. (The only thing I don't understand is why he makes the tests so hard in the first place if he is going to grade them lightly...) Oh well. If you want to make an A, you do have to study & do well on all of your tests. It's not impossible, but good luck!! :)
Dr. Brown is wonderful I really loved this class I'm not interested at all in the subject but Dr. Brown really made me want to go to class and listen to what he had to say He is very helpful if you need help...The tests are difficult but the quizes are super easy study and the class is great be prepared for the last two or three classes on abortion
He is a good teacher but i would never take his course again!
Challenging, interestin, and fair.
alwasy late to class and kept us beyond the time of class. everyday was like being in law school. people that are philosphy majors will rate him as a good professor, others should get on here and vote, because i'm sure it could be misleading to some (like me) class was too hard for an inro lvl course
Really nice guy. Quizzes aren't that easy, but grading is very fair. He stays objective even when talking about controversial subjects.
If you have a valid interest in philosophy, and if you are capable of reading like a big kid, and if you can study, take Dr. Brown. You will find him as wonderfully eccentric and engaging as did I. Otherwise, pick another professor for that philosophy requirement, because you'll find yourself in over your head.
I thought this class was *really* hard even though I wrote down everything off of his powerpoints and then some. The tests were hard to me as well. He was way too perky for 8 in the morning, and for an intro course, it was too difficult. I had trouble understanding him. And he kept class late.
Dr. Brown is a really good teacher. I'm a freshman, and I took this class on accident; I thoroughly enjoyed it. He's highly intelligent; at times, I had no idea what the reading meant, but if you do your assigned work, you'll do fine. He does assign a lot of work, though, & study guides are entirely note based, and his tests are pure memorization
He actually cares about what he's teaching. He's very helpful if you're willing to ask. He's organized, passionate and knowledgeable. He does keep the class over sometimes, but it's not as bad as people make it out to be. It's less what he teaches and more a mindset of being open to different ideas that makes or breaks experience in his class.
I had him for Phil 110 too and he's great. He's hilariuos and he tries to make the material intersting and applicable. It IS Philosophy though, so it still doesn't make any sense for the most part, but he tries hard. He grades easy and you really don't have to use the book. He provides study guides - DO THEM - they help.
This man is the reason I am now a philosophy minor. He provides study guides that give you a pretty good idea of what to expect. You can only cheat yourself out of a good grade by not putting forth the effort.
Dr. Brown was a really helpful, interesting teacher. His tests are essay tests for the most part, and they were all pretty challenging, but he is an easy grader. I would definitely recommend this professor!
His class is easy as long as you make an effort to understand the material. Do your reading and pay attention and you will get no less than a B, assuming you show up to class and test well enough. He gives study guides to review!
He teaches philosophy so expect to get lost sometimes but he is willing to help you if you get confused. Great teacher.
I wasn't a huge fan of philosophy after a while, but that's mostly because of the subject. he's passionate about it, though. he will help if you get lost. he knows when you're trying and he takes that into consideration. he's tough, but fair. a LOT of reading and notes in this class -- be prepared to answer questions about things he said in class.
okay teacher. tries to explain the material, however, he ramble on and on. study guides are extremely to long only to have 10 questions on the test. make sure you buy the books because he assigns work all most every class meeting. enter his class with an open mind
Great teacher. Very engaging. I will take another class from him.
Dr. Brown is usually one-sided on his views, but takes a professional approach to the views of the philosophers of the texts that are read. He encourages intelligent comments in his class. Be warned, though: if you don't read the texts, you won't make more than a D in the class.
He is extremely passionate about philosophy and well versed in it. His class was what made me start enjoying philosophy. He can be tough, but he's fair. There's a fair amount of homework. But if you know the material, the tests are easy enough. I recommend him!
This class is a history class, so be prepared to learn names and dates. The philosophers we went over were interesting (e.g. St. Augustine and Aristotle), and Dr. Brown's homework helps one slow down and better understand the texts used in the class. It is a discussion style class, meaning one should enjoy participating and talking.
This class has been my favorite of his. It is basically a discussion class. He does lecture but it's not for long. He allows tons of questions and we usually get off topic. It's a very fun class and highly interesting. We have homework most nights, but it definitely helps you ready for the tests. He also is always willing to hear your questions!
This is a great teacher and course if you have never taken any philosophy before. Dr. Brown makes the class quite easy, but because it's philosophy you still have to think. He does assign a lot of reading for homework, but he probably only checks to see if you've done the homework two or three times during the semester. I recommend taking Dr. Brown
"God and Human Happiness" was essentially a class on the topic but based on the views advanced/defended by Aquinas concerning said title. Don't expect a cakewalk.
A+ teacher. Whether majoring in Phil or required, first year, or fourth, treats you equally. Expects you to try. Open to thoughts, always willing to answer ques till understood. Lots of book based HW. Do HW & take notes tests not bad at all. Even did a study session on his own time to make sure everyone felt confident for final. AAA Professor...
Dr. Brown is an interesting teacher. He reminds me of the Mad Hatter in a lot of ways. He loves philosophy, but tends to take a lot of time to say one simple thing. Philosophy itself is hard and you'll have to do a lot of reading and homework.
I would recommend Dr. Brown in every enthusiastic way possible. 1 of the sweetest professors, he is super excited about philosophy, a contagious experience. I am majoring in philosophy because of him. Always going the extra mile for students, he makes you feel appreciated for learning. & he WANTS students to try to stump him with questions! :)
Death, Suffering, and Evil was a highly intriguing class. He lectures but is always open to questions. A lot of times we got off topic because of good questions by students. And he loves a challenging question! I'd recommend Dr. Brown for beginner philosophers or for those that have been at it for a while! Brilliant man. Heart of gold.
Dr. Brown is a very interesting fellow. He really gets excited about the material. His class would be much easier if I understood what the people were talking about. He gives alot of homework and study guides. If you study them you will do fine. He also grades on participation. So be ready to speak up.
Highly intelligent and very helpful. His lectures do tend to drag on forever if you don't have anything to add, but if you argue with him at all, it's very interesting. Willing to help after class. Assigns a lot of questions based on the reading, so you have to stay on top of that. There's quite a bit of work involved, but it's worth it.
Homework questions nightly come straight from the book and help you learn the material, plus he goes over the answers in class; He posts PowerPoints online to help with your notes; He posts study guides at least a week before every quiz and test; and He even holds 3-4 hr long study sessions outside of class in Captain's Coffee before every test
If you are not a philosophy major/minor then he is not the professor for you. Take his wife(Merry) if you simply want to get a good grade. I didn't receive a good grade but I LEARNED A LOT by sitting in lecture. He has a true passion for philosophy. The fact that it is an upper-division course, he expects YOU to do MORE work. Acceptable professor
This class is hard and the material is difficult to grasp, but Dr.Brown is extremely helpful and provides you with study guides and study sessions for tests. If you're willing to dedicate a good chunk of your time to it and take advantage of the SI sessions you'll do fine. Class did become very tedious at points.
This class is not one to take if you are looking for an easy A. His tests are really hard but his grading style helps in that department. He is very helpful to try and help you understand the material. He is good about explaining complex ideas in a simple way. If you are really looking to learn about Philosophy, I definitely recommend taking him.
If you do not have prior knowledge about philosophy, do not take this class. He expects you to read, understand, and answer questions about Aristotle and Socrates. His tests are hard cause they are written at his intellectual level, and the questions are hard to understand.
Very entertaining guy, a good teacher. However, he doesn't reward questions or comments; he will embarrass you. His class is pretty easy though if you study his exam reviews thoroughly and turn in homework when he takes it up from time to time. He has a very merciful test grading system.
Clearly loves his job and loves philosophy. Assigns A TON of homework and almost never takes it up but the grading curve for tests is completely worth it. You will do good in the class as long as you do the homework and fill out the study guides for exams.
Dr. Brown is a very intelligent man. Study the exam reviews and you'll do fine on the tests. Read the book! It's not very big and pretty interesting. Do the homework, it boosts your grade alot! Go to class also! He curves at the end of the semester and that helps A WHOLE LOT! Difficult information, but getting a good grade is possible.
Dr. Brown is an extraordinary man and teacher. He is highly intelligent as well as entertaining; come prepared to laugh, learn and understand. Also be prepared for lots of homework. Dr. Brown has a kind heart, always willing to help with questions you may have. Furthermore, he enjoys the occasional high five!
His teaching is very abstract. It's more important on his tests to conceptually understand the material rather than memorization. The class is basically a historical philosophy class. He's not actually interested in the students philosophizing. He rarely uses slides. I recommend recording his lectures.
Dr. Brown definitely knows philosophy but unless you're majoring in philosophy do NOT take his class. Lectures are always the full class time and are not very interesting.
Grading scale is awesome. He really cares about how well his students do in his class. He is very energetic during his lectures, which makes it easy to pay attention. Do not have your phone out in class, do not get up and leave class while he is lecturing. Do the homework, go to class & you will be fine. I would take another class from Dr. Brown.
Only counts off half for incorrect questions on tests. LOTS OF HOMEWORK. but he doesn't always take it up. Lectures are boring. TAKE GREAT NOTES DO NOT RELY ON THE P.P!! take good notes, do the homework, work out the study guides and you should do fine. PARTICIPATE he grades you on it! He can sometimes be a funny guy. Sings in class. LOL
Amazing professor I loved his class. All you really need to do is go to class and pay attention. Exams are a little tough, but he will give a curve on them all.
Dr. Brown is an amazing teacher! He is so passionate about what he teaches, and that means he spends a lot of time preparing himself to make the material easier for his students to understand, but be ready for the challenge. I've taken him for lower division and upper division courses, and all of his classes have greatly challenged me.
Expect homework assigned every class. Attendance wasn't required, but he randomly takes up notes and homework for participation grades. Dr. Brown is very passionate about philosophy, but his lectures were sometimes boring and the PowerPoints were confusing.
Dr. Brown expects a LOT out of his lower division classes. His power points are incredibly confusing. It is often very difficult to grasp what he is talking about, which makes exams a pain in the butt. I think he knows that he often speaks over our heads, which is very annoying. On the plus side, his exams are graded on a HUGE curve.
He can sometimes be very confusing and hard to understand. He grades his tests on an awesome curve tho!
Dr. Brown is a little weird so be prepared for that. He's super accessible outside of class so go to his office hours or email him, you'll regret it if you don't understand and you wait until the last minute.
First thing to knowDr. Brown gives a LOT of homework. If you arent okay with homework every night, dont take his class. He said he usually takes up homework but decided not to for this semester (I dont know if he will continue this or not). He gives a huge curve on tests, though. He is a great guy and is passionate about philosophy.
Do not take this class unless you are a philosophy major. If you are looking for a simple class to earn the credit pick someone else. Very difficult to succeed unless you put in a huge amount of effort. Good luck
The workload he gives for such a basic class is ridiculous. There is homework after every single class that he takes up at random. But if you dont do the homework you wont pass because you have to basically teach yourself in this class. His lectures are so hard to follow and he rambles on about who knows what for 50 minutes.
If you really like philosophy, this is the perfect introductory course. If not, you better be willing to work for it: he gives a lot of homework, and despite multiple-choice tests, you will not do well if you don't study. Also, he gets really into his lectures, so asking questions is a little hard. Just keep your hand up, if you really need to ask.
If you want a simple class for your general studies and you are slightly interested in philosophy, find a different professor. This is not the one for you. Home every night, lectures that arent informative whatsoever, and difficult reading material. Homework is taken up at random, and exams are HARD. Just choose someone else. Seriously.
Not easy class. Would not take if dont have an interest in philosophy. Homework EVERY night. Lectures are amazing. Go to all of them. Ask questions. Make study guides and use past quizlets. But READ ALL the material yourself. Exam 3 is the hardest. Exams make up most of grade. Around 4 homework grades and then participation grade. Great teacher.
Doesnt take student feedback into consideration. This class is literally just lectures and was the first Ive ever struggled significantly with.
He does not know how to teach at all, he will give you over 100 questions to do every week for homework, if you do not sit on the front row he will be out to get you. If you miss a test due to an absence, he will make you take it after the final on the day of the final so you have more to study for. His mentally is to weed out the weak
He talks a lot and barely will let you ask questions even if you have your hand up for a while. An absolutely absurd amount of homework EVERY. CLASS. but doing it is very useful for the also absurdly long study guides for each exam. Take notes on absolutely everything you can because the powerpoints are mostly useless.
Dr. Brown was very entertaining and enthusiastic. You can tell he really loves philosophy. He gives hw at the end of every class. He will take it up randomly so its best to do it. he has 4 tests and the questions all come from the hw so if you do the hw yourself you should be able to do good on the tests. He also does a participation grade.
Dr. Brown is the last person you want to take. He is an extremely hard grader, very rude, and expects you to go above and beyond and be there for every class. He doesn't care if you are sick or have something going on. He is rude but very passionate about a topic that really does not matter.
If you take notes using the handouts he provides, you should make a good grade.
Lectures are interesting! Not an effortless 'A' course. There is a lot of reading, but the books are fairly cheap. The study guides are extensive, but they are the same as the HW questions and really help with exams. He values participation and attendance. Bumped my grade from a high B to an A. I enjoyed each lecture! Extra credit was provided.
There is a lot of homework and it is not just easy gimme work. He is lecture-heavy, but they are honestly very interesting, and many of the materials you have to read are interesting. It can be hard to follow with it being philosophy, but it is not too bad, and he goes over HW in class, and then you turn it in. I loved him as a professor honestly.
I thought this class was very interesting. He primarily focused on the Nicomachean Ethics by Aristotle for this class. It is kind of boring but i think it's good and useful to read. The exams are different than his lower division. They're write in and he grades a little hard. He still has the attendance grade so it's still easy to get a good grade.
Dr. Brown's intro philosophy tests are extremely easy. He knows the material very well and is passionate about the subjects he teaches. If you do poorly in this class, it is because you do not show up nor even glance at the notes before an exam. He gives you a paper to write on at the end of class for participation—it is really easy to do.
I understand that philosophy requires a lot of lecturing, but I found myself just so unbelievably bored every class period. In every single class session, it was just him lecturing the entire time. Sometimes he would prompt students to answer, but it was never a class discussion. It was extremely hard to remain interested
