Best class I've ever taken! His lectures were awesome, interesting and entertaining! He is very funny and does a great job of keeping you engaged when learning about things that may not be so exciting. He was very fair with grading, the test was straight forward and the assignments were fun i.e. attend concert! I would take again in a heartbeat!
It's hard not to get an A in this class. We only had one test. I did poor on it and he offered extra credit for those who did bad. I went everyday, did really well on the desert island and concert report + extra credit paper, ended up with an A even without participating. Make sure you act attentive towards the class and attend daily.
Probably the best professor I've ever had. He does a great job at breaking down difficult concepts and makes the class lively as well as fun. Amazing professor and class!!
Chris was the best professor I've ever had. He really cares about the students, doing everything he can to help every individual truly understand the material. He is never trying to take away points, only to give them. Interesting lectures, and you really learn the material well. Likes to joke around and have fun. Would absolutely recommend!!
Best professor ever. He wants to give you an A, just show up and do the work. Yes, he calls on you but if you don't know the answer, that's fine. He'll just ask someone else to come up & he doesn't make a big deal of it. Just do the short readings, go to class and pass. He's very laid back, super nice and also, extremely funny :)
Great teacher, makes sure that everyone understands the material before moving on, very fun as he makes a lot of jokes and interacts a lot with his students. However, you must attend class because most of the time you won't be able to understand the homework through the textbook and he will break it down super easy and simple.
He is an awesome lecturer and makes the material interesting, but it was pretty hard to do well. There are online textbook quizzes, not sure how they affect grade. A midterm, final, a paper and project. Never got grades for the paper, final, or project. I got an 80 on midterm, 100 on quizzes, and missed class three times. Need to read a lot!
He can be a little intimidating at first but he really does care about the success of his students. He will go over something as much as you need as long as you are showing initiative. He makes sure you are well prepared for the 2 exams and final. He's nice and funny, you can tell he is very passionate about music and helping his students learn.
He's a great teacher. He makes sure that the content is easy to understand and helps makes students comfortable in admitting stuff they're having trouble with. The class has a very casual air around it, yet none of the students take advantage of it because everyone respects him. He makes himself relatable and friendly. He is exextremely passionate.
Best professor I've had at Hunter. SUPER clear about grading policies, what will be on tests, what's expected of you as a student. HW every class. He's strict, but still human. You will have to put in the work to see results. Just wants you to learn the material in the best way possible. I understand so much about music theory thanks to him.
First of all, he understands students and remembers what it was like to be a student and all the things he thought was cool and great and the things he hated and keeps that in mind as he teaches. Second of all, he's a really fun and friendly person who really tries to build a relationship with EVERYONE, but will give you space if you're shy/quiet.
I found this class very difficult.
Dr. Buchenholz is a genius at music. He absolutely knows what he is teaching and makes it very easy to understand. The class has a lot of games where you have to swing your arms and memorize the note patterns. He often expects you to read the textbook before classes. Follow the syllabus, show up to class, and do all of your homework to pass!
Didn't love his teaching style and ability to convey the material clearly. Avoid if you can.
One of the best professors Ive had. Very humorous and really cares about his students and helping them succeed. Offers help if needed and gives great advice in general. Definitely recommend if you want to learn about music on a different level.
professor buchenholz is an amazing teacher, he really gave me an appreciation for music. Definitely recommend you take him and id choose his class over someone else.
Prof Buchenholz is the best. Take this class!
With a class of 40+ students, participation matters because not everyone will get to speak for the day. Still, you should talk with the professor after class is over or email him any questions because he wants all of his students to do well. The lectures are interesting because there are in-class listening from the different musical period.
By far the best professor i ever had, he will help you understand complex concepts and is always available to make sure you fully grasp and understand the material. He is very passionate about what he teaches. In addition he always has this positive energy which will make you smile and have a great time while learning.
Great professor with great lectures. Textbook isn't super important, but is helpful. Super helpful if you reach out and show up to class.
Very difficult.
All my classes have gone online bc of corona virus. Most of my classes are so boring, and the professors have no clue what theyre doing. They just talk at you. Prof. B has gone out of his way to help us. He tries to get us into the music he plays in every class. Hes funny and he really cares. I actually look forward to class! Take him!!!
Even with the circumstances that all colleges experienced, Professor B was open to speaking with me and other students countless times, extending his office hours and trying his best to produce an encouraging and funny atmosphere online. He is an amazing professor that wants you to learn and makes the material easy to master. Take him his class!!!
He is, no doubt, the best professor I've had since starting college. He breaks down tough concepts into very small, manageable pieces. If there's something you're confused on, he will review the topic until you understand. Biggest mistake you can make in his class is not practicing. He can tell if you don't and he will call you out (in a nice way).
Prof. Buchenholz is one of the best professors at Hunter College. He really cares about his students and is always there to help you. Attend the lectures, listen to what he has to say, and don't be afraid to reach out! The exercises that we do in class is exactly what will be on the exam. One concert report which is only a page long.
Professor Buchenholz is one of the best professors I have ever had. He truly cares about his students and genuinely wants them to understand and enjoy the fundamentals of music. Make sure you practice, and you'll enjoy the lectures and understand what is being taught. I would definitely recommend taking this course!
Professor Buchenholz was honestly a great professor all around. He did an amazing job describing forms and terminology which had been foreign to me prior to his class. He keeps you engaged even with certain topics which were a bit boring. He is HILARIOUS and is super passionate about what he teaches. All around a great guy, take his class!
He keeps the classes engaging with jokes, images, stories and interesting questions. His insight in the subject made it easier to grasp the tougher concepts like key signature and intervals and he cared a lot for his students, he would slow down his progression of material until every person fully understood what they were doing. Great Class!
Professor Buchenholz is THE best professor I've had yet. Not only is he passionate about music, but he is always making sure every student understands the content. I think it is safe to say that every student enjoyed his class! He will respond to emails fast, be on top of you (in a good way!), and make you want to come back to learn more! The BEST!
The real gem of a music professor at Hutner. He is very knowledgeable, chill, and enthusiastic about teaching the history of music in a comprehensive manner. The workload is very light, and if you have any question he responds to email very well. He doesn't explicitly grade your participation but he expects the class to engage actively.
Amazing professor! Very energetic and passionate about what he's teaching. Kind of sad that the semester is over. A bond felt from the very first day of class. Has a great sense of humor and extremely knowledgeable about the subject of music. Just the professor you are looking for in the mist of a pandemic.
He is a great professor that is really passionate about what he teaches. The only thing I disliked was the requirement to have your camera on as well as his insistence to call on everyone in the class to participate. Other than that, I really learned a lot and he kept things interesting!
Youll enjoy learning from Professor Buchenholz a lot. He puts in effort which means you will be learning a lot. Hes also really funny and makes the class enjoyable and not boring. The work load is not too much and it is reasonable. You can tell he cares about his students.
Very easy and outgoing professor! There is a midterm and a final but both easy and called games as well as multiple attempts, theres also a desert island playlist and concert report! It was a fun class and he was hilarious! Hes understanding If you want a nice professor definitely take him! I didnt buy the textbook & went to his class &did ok
Overall, the class was entertaining. While we may be learning the history of music, the professor had kept us interested into the lectures. He is really caring and wants us to pass, but also understand the material.
Such a wonderful and thoughtful professor! He can be easily accessed outside of class, made learning music fun, and simplified the hard topics. He will go over topics multiple times to make sure everyone understands before moving on. He's funny and keeps you engage. Randomly picks on students to participate so be ready!
I wish there wasnt a character limit so I could say truly say how great of a professor Chris is. I was originally not supposed to take his course because I took years of classical theory in high school, but I am so glad I did. His class is an environment where everyone can learn whether youre new to the subject or a seasoned vet. Take this class.
The real gem of music department at Hunter. You might feel intimidated in the beginning cuz he wants everyone to participate actively in the class. Don't worry! the class is judgement-free zone and all you have to do is enjoy the musics he plays throughout the class and do homeworks. PLEASE TAKE HIM!!!!
This professor is super cool and this class was honestly enjoyable. Not a lot of grades, but if you show up and turn stuff in on time you'll be fine. This class is not stressful and the course material is interesting even for people who have little experience talking about the technicalities of music. Definitely recommend for the experience.
I took MUSTH101 because I was curious about music. I came out of that class reconsidering my career path. He is one of the best professors I have had so far. Homework is frequent but straightforward and he is always willing to help and his classes are super fun. He makes things super simple and easy. You will definitely learn alot from his class.
Such an amazing professor! Take him!!!
Prof Buchenholz is by far my favorite professor at Hunter. His class was my main highlight of Zoom learning. I looked forward to it weekly; he's one of the smartest professors here at Hunter. He wants everyone to genuinely do their best and he's super reachable outside of class. I walked away with a new love and appreciation for music.
I love music I always wanted to learn music. I just never understood it. But I took a chance and signed up for this class. So far I am not disappointed. We already are learning scales and beats and meters and I am figuring out songs on the piano. The professor. Really makes me believe I can do this. If you are curious about learning music take
I would not recommend taking this class. Difficult for a 101 class.
At first I was intimidated bc Chris randomly calls on you but he is a great teacher. He has corny jokes but he really loves teaching music to you. This is a hard class but he makes it fun and has tricks to help you learn. My favorite class so far.
He has an attitude, acts cocky, rude, and doesn't have much patience. Extremely demanding for an intro class. There are better professors in the music department who make learning easier and less stressful. Making jokes here and there don't compensate for the hard time he makes you go through.
The material is explained thoroughly by Professor Buchenholz, and he pushes the pace or pulls back when needed to make sure we all understand the concepts. Overall a very fun and enticing class, just make sure to put in a little effort, ask questions, and you'll be set!
Professor Buchenholz's class is a fun and super easy class. He's understanding and cares to help you out if you need any kind of help in his class. All his homework, midterm, and final are really easy. If you attend class everyday and do all the work and participate, you'll get an easy A. AND he's entertaining/funny so you won't be bored. Take him!
You must take Professor Buchenholz's class! If you complete the work and show up, you should have no complaints. His class is engaging and you will learn a lot. He is accessible and really cares about his students. His approach to teaching is refreshing and he really creates a unique and fun learning environment.
Prof. Buchenholz is one of a kind professor. Really cares about teaching and his students. He is super clear with what he expects. He just wants you to put in the effort. super accessible and is willing to help a lot. His classes are super fun as he makes sure you engage somehow. Truly passionate. Class is easy af if you care and put in effort!
Professor Buchenholz is one of the best professors Ive taken at Hunter College. He really cares about his students and explains the concepts in a clear and concise fashion. He also makes the class fun and entertaining, so you won't be bored. Exams and assignments are also really straightforward. Definitely recommend taking him!
Great & caring professor who makes the class challenging but at the same time a fun, spontaneous, and encouraging environment for learning. The way he teaches the class is amazing and he helps everyone understand the material. He provides a lot of resources and help. Highly recommend, definitely sparked an interest in music in me.
Absolutely AMAZING! Professor Buchenholz is one of the best professors I've had at Hunter! He is extremely passionate about music and cares about his students and you will learn a lot from him. The class is easy if you participate and do the homework and readings. He also provides us with resources and you can also reach out to him for help.
I wouldn't take him again cuz I'm introverted. Randomly calls on you, calls you out if you dont hum along and assigns a concert report, which you have to do by attending a live concert(luckily covid hit and he allowed us to watch an online concert instead). Other than that seemed reasonable. Not too much hw, a test here and there and the report.
Prof is the best! He is corny but really wants you to learn. I thought music would be easy but I was so confused. Chris made it fun and it made sense by the end. Def take this class. Light on work!
Amazing Prof and class. I thought this was a boring class about classical music but it was everything. Chris uses examples from so many different kinds of music. He talks about art and dance and his dog bubbles. Exams were easy and he calls them games. Best class.
this is hands down the most unorganized mess of a class that ive ever been apart of. midterm changed SEVERAL times (back & forth with himself about time & attempt changes) 2 days before it was scheduled. he is condescending & very rude. totally duped by this rating. its nov & still no one knows whats going on. BEWARE OF THIS PROFESSOR AND CLASS!
Really I dont know why people be bugging. Chris is goofy and lokee corny but he knows his stuff and he makes the class mad fun. Ive had other professors like this, but Chris is legit. I am gonna register for his other class next semester because he makes me want to learn more. TAKE THIS MANS CLASS YOU WILL NOT BE SORRY
Hes a professor who actually cares about his students success. You have to attend class in order to do well because without his great explanations, youll be lost. There are hw assignments each week, one midterm, and one final. He calls the exams games because he doesnt want them to be stressful (he gave more than enough time on them).
I have never had a teacher like Professor Buchenholz. This is my first semester in college and this class is the only class I actually looked forward to. We still have a week of class and I miss the class already. It has been a rough semester, Im not gonna lie, but twice a week at 5:35 on mon/wed I am reminded that Im ok.
Professor Christopher Buchenholz cares about his students, and he's passionate. he try to help as much as he can. He gave us 2 extra review classes before the final. He give light work, but participation matters, and we got midterm, final exams, and a final paper, it was a concert report. He made the class easy and fun.
Professor Christopher Buchenholz is a fantastic professor who makes the class enjoyable and cares about his students. When I thought I couldn't do it, he was the one who convinced me that I could, And I appreciate him for it; he deserves a lot of respect thanks Professor for the wonderful class and care for us.
His class was the easiest I've taken so far. All you need to do is read the 20 pages he assigns (in total for the whole semester) and listen to his lectures, and you'll end up with an A+. He's a super-lenient grader and funny too. He'll teach you everything from scratch, so don't worry if you're new to Music Theory. Just pay attention and have fun.
I took two exams, one in class and one at home. I had a solid background in music so I was fine but I expected to get an A. Your final grade depends on the two exams. He picks on random people and it gets hard if you don't pay attention.
Excellent choice. Sometimes starts his lectures in creative ways, such as telling you what he saw this morning (most of it is a lie). Be prepared to class and for him to call on you out of nowhere. Forcing participation here is actually beneficial in this class. His high school music teacher Ms. Buchanan probably inspired him to teach.
He was amazing! Like he was one of my favorite professors at Hunter College. His class makes you want to go to campus like he realizes my stress. Also, he is a very chill person. Not very tough on the grades, but the textbook for his class was very expensive. He grades pretty leniently, but you must show up to his class.
Prof Buchenholtz was my favorite teacher at hunter by far. I came in knowing nothing about music and at first I was overwhelmed. But he took lots of time to explain things to the class and even met with me every week to help me. I would take any class he teaches
I had professor Christopher Buchenholz in the spring semester; he was the funniest and most caring teacher you will have. He will call on students randomly, and he only does it to help us to succeed in his class. If you're confused about something about the lesson in class or music ask a question, and he will gladly answer. As he simplifies music.
Professor Buchenholz made taking a summer elective so enjoyable. I especially appreciate the way he structures his lectures to go beyond learning about white historical figures in music. He really cares about connecting music to modern-day phenomenas and bringing awareness to all kinds of music. By far one of the best educators I've had.
Extremely chill. Homework was VERY easy and quick. Lectures taught you a lot too. Recommend for an easy A as long as you are willing to learn about music or are already experienced.
Professor Chris is a wonderful teacher, he knows what he is doing when it comes to teaching his students the artistry and technicality of music. If you need extra help, don't be ashamed to go ask him after class, he will provide you with as much help as soon as possible. And his teaching style is very digestible to understand. He's also funny!!!
Prof. Buchenholz creates a very comfortable and engaging environment. He uses great analogies and ensures that his students understand the lesson. Exams are very easy even if you have never touched an instrument in your life before, just come to class and do the homework,. But this course is also very fun, you get to learn the basics of music.
He is an amazing Professor and participation matters a lot in his class if you don't participate he might call on you. His lectures are heavy.
Honestly, if you usually don't speak in class don't take him. You would get a B+ if you get 100s on all your assignments and attend every class but don't participate. I participated like three times in the semester only to get an A-. Try to participate in every other class I guess and make sure he knows you. Btw HIS LECTURES ARE SO BORING!
You have to go to class to learn since the textbook is useless without the lectures. The lectures were usually understandable as long as you pay attention. He will call on people at random and your grade will be brought down depending on how many times you're late or absent. Was very kind and funny! Does not accept late work even a few min late!
Professor Buchenholz is a great teacher for those who are starting out with music. He always keeps class casual and makes the material interesting and funny. He is relatable, engaging and I always looked forward to going to class.
Amazing Class. If you put in the work, participate and be on time- there is no way you will fail this class. You will learn a lot if you take this class without any stress. Professor Buchenholz is sweet and caring; he is honestly one of the best professors I have met at Hunter College.
He teaches well and uses many ways to engage students in the lecture. Not many assignments. Wants you to participate in class though. Never participated and got a B+. He did say to use discussion board for those shy people (like me) but it didn't work out since barely any people wrote on it and it's hard to come up with what to write after class.
Great guy! One of my favorite professors at Hunter. Really understanding and cares for his students. He goes over exactly what to expect on exams and wants to see his students succeed. Three exams and one paper report. Nothing crazy. Really looked forward to his classes for his cool personality alone. Any student who takes him is very lucky!!
Always looked forward to attending class because he is funny and makes his lectures interesting. In class, we listen to various types of music (not just classical) and go around the room saying what we think about it or answer some other question related to the music. No exams/quizzes in this class, just graded on BB assignments and participation.
Great Professor and great class! I like his sense of humor and will take another class with him again next semester.
Professor Buchenholz is excellent! He tries his best to make his lectures as good as possible. He replies to emails quickly. One thing I wish is that for the concert report assignment, he could accept video live concerts instead of in-person concerts. Attendance is taken in every class, and you miss three classes.
The lectures are fun and interesting. He teaches/explains information in a way that is friendly and easy to understand for those that doesn't know anything about music. Only thing is participation is 30% of the grade but there is an option to use the discussion board if you are shy.
He is a good professor if you are interested in taking Music as a major but he was alright. Easy class and you have to participate for a grade but can use discussion post if you don't want to talk in class. In the beginning the lectures was interesting. You listen to different genres of music and talk about it
He is a great professor who uses his humor to engage the students in the content. There were a few assignments so the workload is pretty lenient. However, there is a concert assignment where you actually have to attend a concert. Also participation is worth a lot, 30% of the overall grade so make sure to be vocal or use blackboard discussion board.
Chris was hilarious and breaks down material into easy to understand concepts. He values effort over performance. Even if you suck, if you show you're invested in his class and trying to improve you'll get a good grade. There is occasional hw and tests are straightfoward. Just practice whats assigned and reach out to Chris if you need extra help!
He does cold calls, so be prepared to answer his questions. His lectures are not considered hilarious but better than others. Tells you what to study before an exam/quiz. Almost one assignment per lecture (two per week). The school chose this class for the first semester of freshmen, so I didn't have a choice.
Hunter needs more professors like him
Professor Buchenholz is an amazing instructor! The class is beginner-friendly, so even if you don't have a music background, you'll learn a lot. You'll gain an understanding of musical terms and how to describe music. Assignments, like creating a playlist and the final concert report, are fun and unique. Highly recommend!
Professor Buchenholz is wonderful at his job and teaches in a clear and engaging manner. He is clearly passionate about what he does. I would recommend this professor to both music majors as well as those who are just trying to full-fill a prerequisite credit! If you go to class and put thought into your assignments you will do well :)
Amazing Professor. No finals. Only 6 assignments and 1final assignment to go to a concert and write about it. Just need to participate but he allows you to use discussion boards.
Funny prof. Has lots of personality and can come off as harsh at first but not at all. He wants his students to do well and tells exactly what he expects of us. If you know music theory easy A, if not you will have to put some work in but it's doable.
Very passionate about music and funny professor. He wants his students to do great and tell us what he expects of us. If you're struggling with music just ask for help and he will help you improve. However if you're struggling and you don't do nothing it will be reflect on your grade. He wants to see his students succeed.
I learned a lot from this class. There aren't much hw. the reading are relatively short, so do the reading before coming to class. He would randomly call on student to answer question on the board. He tells us what will be on our exams. There is an end of semester assignment where you have to attend a concert and write about it (1 page).
I think a lot of people are scared of him, and to be honest, I was too at first. But he's actually one of the best professors I've had. He will really help you. As long as you make the effort, you will pass the class. I didn't have any knowledge about music, but I learned a lot because of him.
