In class quizzes are worth 25% of your grade so you have to prepare for every class, but the tests are much easier than the lectures
Burke has a supply chain/operations management background. His MIS knowledge is lacking. Lectures consist of him reading off of lecture slides provided by the textbook. He answers questions by re-reading the slides. Projects are poorly organized and explained. Not a bad guy but not equipped at all to teach MIS
Just show up for daily quizzes and make sure you actually read the textbook and other materials. Really textbook heavy, but its easy enough. The only problem is that the curve is whack; the A cutoff was like 96 for my class, so you have to really work to get an A.
Love the guy, used a lot of slides and sometimes assigned projects that neither he or him TA fully understood, but he would grade easier because of it. I honestly enjoyed the class but was a chore having to go at 8AM.
His lectures were very interesting and kept me awake at the ungodly hour of 8. The class was a lot of work in my opinion. He also ghosted me when I sent him an email regarding my grade. Other than that, he's very knowledgable. Do the readings, prepare for the daily quizzes, or you will not do well.
Good professor, often cracks jokes. Very straightforward class. SAM assignments are easy but can get annoying. Class PowerPoints are long (50 slides) but can easily be summarized. Definitely one of the easier 301 classes. Only annoying thing is the excel assignments that come up later (not too bad w/ a good TA). Skim read for daily iClicker q's.
Lengthy Canvas assignments (not necessarily hard, just long). Weekly SAM assignments easy, but annoying. Daily quizzes over the readings using clickers. Kind of hard to make an A because of the curve. Exams are literally definitions from the textbook and pretty easy short answer questions. I would take again. Reading is long.
Burke is a nice guy and tries to connect with his students. I would give him a 5 if I was rating him as a person, but as a professor he is pretty average. Pretty much just re-lectures the textbook in class and doesn't add much insight. Take him if you do not want to major in MIS, take Rock if you do. Put in the work, and you can easily get an A.
he is super monotone so his lectures are unbelievably boring. he treated the tests like a guessing game by making our review material a shortened version of the powerpoint (lots of information to know). his tests have free response. never knew what was going to be on the test. couldn't ask him for help on SAM. canvas assignments were really hard
If you have to take MIS and get the chance, take Burke! He tests based on class slides that are posted on canvas. There are fewer projects than other MIS classes and you get multiple attempts and/or a partner to work with. If you complete the assignments and study slides you can get an A. Daily iClicker quizzes to take attendance.
The daily iclicker quizzes gave me anxiety. I did not enjoy this class. He seems nice but he just reads off the slides. I felt like I didn't really learn anything. The tests are so long(consist of MC,short&long free-response questions). It was so hard trying to stay awake in this class at 9:30am. The test reviews are just him reusing lecture slides
The class is you having to do a lot of work yourself, but it's not too hard and actually useful to learn. There are assessments where he looks for specific answers that are all outlined in the notes. Once you get used to him, not a hard class. He also knows what he's talking about as a professor. Lectures don't really help.
Burke is a nice and amazing person but lectures are boring. The grade is composed of too many things you need to put effort into during the whole semester. The average score for this class is extremely high so be aware of the curve.
His classes are lecture heavy and there are required readings, but as long as you read and digest the PPTs that Burke posts on Canvas you would be fine. The assessments can be tricky at first because they are specific terms and concepts that he looks for in a response, but once you get a hang of it you can do well on them.
Took Fall 2020. DON'T want to major in MIS or have Rock? Take Burke. Easy A if you thoroughly read the textbook. I had Sam (TA) and she was very understanding with grading and explanations. MUST read textbook for assessments. Keep in mind Burke does not follow the UT grading scale. He often curves up for what counts as an A (Ex: 93+A).
Burke is an amazing professor. The class itself has a lot of elements to it, but very doable. I thought it was a pretty easy class to do well in and a better choice in comparison to other MIS 301 professors. The only thing is that with the curve, you need to have a high A to actually get an A in the class. Tests online are open note!!
Overall good experience, interesting lectures.
Class is mostly him reading off lecture slides. He makes jokes sometimes.
Burke is a great professor. He gives you powerpoints that concise the textbook so that as long as you take notes during lecture, the textbook is optional (he says it's a supplemental resource). However, because of the high cutoff for an A in this class, you do really need to work it (like above 95/96). But it is doable if you put in the effort.
I really like Prof Burke and the lessons he gave. Although reading the textbook wasn't necessary it helped me a lot. People were saying you need a high at (95/96) but personally getting a 94 or above got me an A. Burke made MIS pretty interesting even though some of the assignments were annoying.
Professor Burke is nice, funny, and has good intentions. I have heard he is a really great MIS professor. However, he went through topics much too quickly and the exams were overly difficult. You did get to use notes on exam though, but they were still so hard. Too much info too fast. Not sure if there is a better option though tbh...
Only 2 exams and homework for this course and no extra credit.
Professor Burkes is a class i would definitely take again. SAM assignments are frustrating but very do -able, the TA guides you through the help if you need it. Lectures are interesting and there is 5 assessments, 4 case assignments, 4 partner core assignments. watch the lectures/take notes and you will do well.
overall, meh. He does the bare minimum but then grades rly hard. I did well in the class, but see how easy he made it for others to struggle. He was more concerned abt telling us to attend the next football game (bc apparently he was paid to do so) and just read off slides that are STRAIGHT from the book. if he likes u, he grades u better too
I had MIS w Burke online in Fall 2021, and enjoyed him and the class a lot. He breaks down the textbook into concise slides, so all you need is the slides, and the exams are open note, making them pretty easy if you are at least somewhat prepared. Actually engage in class and apply yourself a little, and you can get an A pretty easily. Great Prof
I definitely would not recommend this prof. I based off my selection on his RMP but he has in fact changed the lay out of the class. The test are no longer open note like previous semester which makes the test super hard to do good because its test heavy. There is no extra credit nor curve and he a pretty bad lecturer.
Say goodbye to open-note tests. Tests are majority memorization (not much application, just memorization) and make up almost 60% of our final grade. Get ready to read! Burke is a cool guy, but the tests can really affect your grade, even if you prepare extensively for them and do great on all the other assignments.
Took him during COVID. Class was scheduled to be hybrid, but we only met in-person once. His class is definitely the easiest for MIS 301, but don't expect to actually learn anything. One time he didn't even show up to class and never offered an explanation of why. Regularly curves final grades down and isn't transparent with grading criteria.
Honestly dont take him if your care about your gpa. Took him because everyone said how good he was but he has changed the layout of the class. No more open note test like the last several semesters and they make up 60% of the grade and are hard. Most of the assignments given in the class you are never taught how to do.
His lectures are okay, the way the course is graded is kind of weird since there are only three things that matter. The exams and cores and cases. The cores are not too bad. The cases are depending on how your TA is feeling that day. Exams are okay too. Not lenient with grading and is not the nicest professor. He's just okay.
This is a fairly easy class for MIS. If I studied a little harder I believe an A would have been achievable, as the grade is based 57% on 3 tests. As long as you read through his slides and know how to apply the concepts you will be fine. The case assignments are annoying and the TA grades harsh but overall not too bad
Professor Burke is a great, funny, and knowledgable professor. Take the group work seriously and pay attention in the lectures.
MIS 301 with Dr. Burke was alright. TBH, I could've made an A- in the class, but I was lazy to actually study and crammed the day of tests. There's three exams, but not final. Recommend buying the textbook, it has practice quizzes which he bases the exams off of. Honestly, if you put some effort into this class you'll get an A- or A.
Do not take burke his lectures seem fun when it comes to test they have hard multiple choices. All of the assignments given to you are never even talked about so you have to learn them all on your own.
I was miss informed by past students that this would be a pretty easy class with online exams but he has changed the format of test. They are no longer online and open note so be ready to study a lot for the exams. The test make up most of your grade while the other assignments require you to learn it yourself and barely count towards your average
This class was has completely changed from one semester to the other. was recommended to take him from others but they had a different syllabus. The class is super test heavy that one grade can mess you up. He skims slides during lectures and doesn't highlight on any of the important topics that you will be tested on.
Dr. Burke has interesting lectures that he pairs with his sense of humor. He lectures directly from the slides with some videos and experiences in between. Exam questions were pulled from the practice quizzes, so you know what to expect on the exam. Ask your TA for help with group projects and cases. No final!!
Tough, but fair. Attend lecture and do some studying before the exam and you're solid.
Dr. Burke is really funny and kind. Exams are tough- they have very specific questions from the textbook. Essentially, they test your memorization of the textbook. If you start studying early, an A is doable. Group work is not too bad, and you can always ask the TA questions. Overall, the class requires effort, but is well structured.
Tests are easy if you attend lectures, review slides, and read the textbook. Although his lectures seem dry, they have a way of sticking in your memory. He did not curve my class.
This class is just you teaching yourself the lectures are pretty vague for how much he test you on. All the assignments are self taught he doesn't give any information of all of the projects and assignments that are due and they barely count for anything.
The tests are relatively easy if you study the material and the projects teach you things that are actually useful. That being said, lectures can be a little dry and instructions for projects/assignments can be pretty limited. If you study well, this class can be an easy A and its an easier alternative to other MIS301 options.
Dr. Burke's MIS class focuses on the business side of technology, which is why he does not test on the homework that involves coding. The tests do require you to understand a good amount of information, but if you study ahead of time and use the slides as a guide they are very fair. His grading is fair, and his lectures were always entertaining.
Burke is the worst. His lectures are so boring and you don't learan much and it is very dumbed down but then his homeworks which are supposed to be based on the lecture are extremely difficult and quite frankly you must teach yourself how to do. If there is another option, take a different professor
I took MIS with him and thought he would be just as good as a professor for OM. I think that the tests are very hard and your grade depends on whether the TAs hold review sessions. Class is not helpful and practicing emphasizes the concepts the most.
This might be one the worst classes I have ever taken. I took Burke for MIS301 and enjoyed it. The assignments were fair and the tests correlated directly to what he taught. OM is a whole different story. I have never learned less in a course. The homework has NOTHING to do with lectures and the tests don't correlate to the homework either.
Not only is the class confusing , but while other professors curved according to the McCombs guidelines, he didn't despite grades not being great. Weekly homeworks don't line up with exams and lectures don't have anything to do with exams. Take it with someone else.
I don't even know what to say. The grading is so unclear, and you cannot even see the average score of your assignments, leading you to believe that you are doing worse than you currently are.
misogynistic. talks over you. narcissist. brags about himself the entire time. don't even pay attention, he reads the textbook out to you like you didn't pay money for it
This class follows very, very closely to the textbook, to the point where the lecture slides are taken straight from the book. I found this really good, as it kind of standardized the information and made it so the topics that we were tested/quizzed on were directly in line and could be found in the textbook.
Exams were very difficult--100 questions, no word bank, and weirdly written too. You have to study in advance and pretty much memorize the textbook. Lectures were mundane and there are pop quizzes that are graded so do some light reading before class. You learn Excel outside of class but the lessons were easy.
This class is so freaking annoying and hard. They are testing you over memorization of the textbook and by memorizing I mean MEMORIZING LINES to the dot. The lectures do not do a good job of reiterating the information and he even tells you in class that we won't talk about everything that could show up on the test.
Quizzes are unnecessarily difficult and much harder than other professors. Tests ability to answer fill-in-the-blank under time constraints. Tests are challenging but not impossible if you study and are standardized. He's is funny and a good lecturer but the lectures do not help with anything. The class is entirely based on reading.
Cool guy and I like how he explained topics like it was a conversation. Participation pop quizzes can be harder than other profs who just do completion instapolls (Finney). Tests are same for all profs: 100 randomized Qs so you need to know the textbook well especially vocab. Strict on no extra credit, only curves if class avg is
The lectures are extremely boring, especially since they're straight from the textbook when you have to read it ahead anyway. You have to know the book and vocab by heart for the tests; make sure to start studying ahead with quizlets and practices. Gives difficult pop-quizzes that are harder than the other profs' so look through your vocab before.
I took Professor Burke for MIS and OM. Not my favorite classes but Professor Burke made them both easy to understand and was always available to answer question over email or zoom. Would take any class given by him.
Worst prof I've had at UT. Lectures consisted of him talking about sports and using only 20-30 minutes to read directly off of slides from the textbook when we already had to read the chapter before. Prides himself on making tests as difficult as possible without any actual teaching. By far my easiest course content wise, but brought down GPA.
Professor Burke is amazing! He keeps lectures engaging to his best ability. The OM 235 material can be dense, so please take advantage of his OHs if you're struggling. Attendance is "mandatory" but participation is based on completing pop quizzes. He advocates for YOU. Exams are tougher, but that's not his fault.
I would recommend taking Burke for MIS, he seems to have made the class better than some people I know with different professors. If you study and understand the terms you will make an A.
The lecture is boring and everything he talked about is directly from the book. Text is 100 question multiple choice, T/F and fill in the blank
Was this class hard? Yes. Did I have to memorize literally everything? Also yes. But did he curve my grade to an A at the end? Yes. So, at the end of the day, he gives you the resources to succeed you just really have to memorize every detail in the powerpoints and do the textbook practice quizzes. Nice guy too, decently understanding.
Burke was a pretty decent Professor and was willing to help students with concepts outside of office hours. 50% of your grade is based on assignments that aren't terribly difficult. However, the other 50% of your grade is based on tests that require you to memorize the textbook and slides. Tests are not cumulative.
Professor Burke lectures entirely from textbook slides, which is a total repetition of content that you're already required to read. It is impossible to stay engaged during class. Additionally, Professor Burke exercises his power to pick favorite students, scrutinize students on their honesty, and make inappropriate jokes for a college classroom.
He's a more no BS type of professor. MIS301 is a memorization of key term class. His lectures don't really help for the exams you need to self study by yourself. Not bad but not great professor.
I understand how some people can find him strict, but I absolutely loved this class. MIS was boring for me but Burke really made the lectures interesting. To pass the exams you need to memorize ALL of the VOCAB on the slides. Learn the Vocab and you'll do great. All of the other mini-assignments throughout the class are pretty easy.
Going into MIS I was fearful of the course work because other people said it was bad, but Burke breaks it down into VERY manageable chunks and is a funny guy! The tests are pretty memorization heavy, but if you pay attention in class and review the notes and supplementals it provides you with everything you need.
Honestly not that bad of a class. Incredibly passionate professor who will work with you if you have any issues. He is very no BS, and does not allow screens in class and will call you out. Memorize how to do the HW problems for the exam and you will get a B/A.
Burke is a pretty humorous guy who always begins his class talking about the weekly UT sports scene. Classes are slides based on readings, and assignments are simple excel worksheets and interactive textbook questions. He makes a review slide for the midterms and if you study those you will do well. Class is usually released 30 minutes early.
I took Burke for MIS301 and OM235 and would recommend taking his class for either. Does a good job explaining what to do for each kind of problem. Before each test, redo all of the homeworks up until that point and create a good notes sheet (you can bring one to the test) with all the required formulas and you will do well in the class.
Based on what I've heard from my friends who took other professors for MIS 301, Burke is by far the best professor to take for MIS 301. Although this class is memorization heavy, the class is structured in a way that will set up up for success on the exams. Burke also has a great sense of humor and keeps the class engaged. Take him if you can!
The way he teaches the class itself is pretty good. I am giving him a low rating because of how he is as a person. I personally feel that he is rude and does hold racial biases. Overall as far as workload the class is pretty doable. We only had to refer to the textbook like twice the whole semester
I truly don't get what people in here are saying because Burke is by far the best OM professor. He's super understanding but stern. He's always there for you and he's a pretty good lecturer. 100% recommend. If you don't like OM in general, every prof will be challenging. Just work a bit hard ig
DO NOT TAKE PROFESSOR BURKE. He fosters an environment of fear, and a simple mistake on an assignment can get you in huge trouble. Not welcoming and doesn't care about his students. He uses his platform to make himself look superior and belittles students. Really discouraging and is extremely strict overall.
Burke's lectures are too long and conceptual; more in-class practice would help. A 35%-weighted final without a practice exam is unreasonable, especially with limited resources for tough topics like project crashing. There's also no curve, on either the exam or final grade, despite all the other OM professors doing otherwise.
Awful. This guy does not care about students. Unreachable and unhelpful. He is the only professor who doesn't curve the grade which is insane. I would at least have A- if it wasn't for that. Unless you're a beast at supply chain, don't take him.
Nothing about this class is hard but Burke is the only prof that doesn't curve and u NEED a curve for the exams. Exams and hw aren't hard but getting a few (2-3) mistakes/not understanding a problem on both exams will get u an A-/B. If u don't care abt GPA this prof is fine and the class is chill.
He is genuinely very rude for not curving the exams that have no practice exam. You go in blind to the exams which are worth all your grade. There is no grace and the “extra credit” favors only a few people. Take anyone but him.
As someone without a 4.0, this course is not hard at ALL if you pay attention. Burke is engaging, and walks through example exam questions in every class; especially with the allowed cheat sheet, you're golden if you pay attention. Personally, I enjoyed his lectures greatly (other than the mention of food around lunchtime). Take him if you can!
For OM he knows his stuff. His lectures are really good and he post his slides after. He made us take notes with only paper and not laptops which is a little strange. Class isnt too bad, theres just no practice material which makes it somewhat iffy.
This class is one of those classes where you would be fine if you only came to the review class before the exam. Unfortunately, attendance is mandatory, and electronics are banned, so I was in class every week. Burke is a great professor, but there is just not enough content to warrant a two-hour mandatory class.
Listen...OM 235 as a class in my honest opinion, easy money—honestly pretty interesting. OM 235 with Burke? Now that's a different story. Don't take him if you care about your GPA, don't take him unless you don't mind no partial credit on FRQ based exams and no curves despite a C- average on exams. Just...don't take him. Trust, take ANYONE else.
OM should be easy but this man makes it so difficult. Do not take his class unless you hate yourself. It's graded based off the fact that his students get C- on exams and he still doesn't curve, you get counted off on HWs all the time and he can be boring. Taking OM with him is a GPA NO: anyone who tells you otherwise is a supply chain major.
Prof. Burke is super nice and always replies fast. The midterm and final are moderately hard, but homework is easy and helps your grade. Class is pretty boring, but you can learn everything from his slides. As long as you stay on top of it, you'll be fine.
This professor does not care about his students one bit. If I were given the option to take another course taught by him or drop out of UT, I would start packing my bags and go. I have never met a professor who grades so harshly on exams and then looks at his students as if it is our fault. This guy will laugh at you for failing and not help.
His lectures are extremely boring and he just flies through material without being engaging. Also if you turn an assignment in even a minute late it is an automatic 0.
I enjoyed Professor Burke's class. He's an engaging lecturer who explains material clearly, is approachable during office hours, and is always willing to help. He's also very understanding and accommodating. The weekly homework is manageable, and while the exams can be challenging, staying on top of the material and studying makes them very doable
Dr. Burke is amazing! If you can take him, DO. His lectures are engaging and make OM an easy to understand concepts. If you attend class weekly, you won't need to study outside of class. The homework is easy and take less than 30 mins weekly. You absolutely should attend class (no tech allowed) to succeed on the exams, but it's very doable.
