Cahill is an amazing teacher.Even for someone who doesn't like chemistry,if you work hard enough you'll do well in the class. He is always avalible to help and he posts his powerpoint lectures on blackboard.Although the subject matter is difficult,Cahill couldn't be a better person to teach the mater
Chemistry is not the most interesting subject, but Cahill makes class funny, he is helpful in office hours, and he posts the notes on blackboard. For the tests, be sure to study the problems that he recommends from the book.
Cahill is an awesome lecturer and makes his class as fun as possible for a chem class. He is also always there to help and will remember your name if you come to office hours! The exams are hard, so start studying in advance, cuz he gives LOTS of recommended practice problems!
Lectures are structured well and he's very accessible outside of class. Cahill wants you to do well and makes an effort to learn your name. His tests aren't too bad as long as you keep up with the work.
Power point, fast paced, goes over main ideas and leaves the student to learn how to solve the problems by practicing themselves. Exams are challenging - multiple choice and short answer. Questions are not necessarily straight forward. Very accessible outside of class- remembers students by name
Exams are tough but he is a good professor and keeps the class interesting. Very accessible outside of class and office hours and is interested in helping you do well in his class. Must keep up with the work or you have no chance of doing well. Do the recommended book problems.
Cahill loves chemistry. He loves it so much that his enthusiasm passes onto you. Tests were hard. Class interesting. All on powerpoint, some board. Does fun experiments in class. It is a very fast paced course. Make sure you can learn on your own or go to office hours. Best Chem for science majors professor in GWU. Take him!!!
Really funny, made the class so interesting.
He is willing to help and his lectures are very clear and everything....but....his tests are impossbile and class average was 60 for the whole semester. (He doesn't curve!!!) However, if you work hard you will get A!! But, sometimes I can see that people still get 60s even though they study really hard!
This class is horrible! He is very knowledgeable but CANNOT teach! He goes really fast and expects students to keep up! Tests are ridiculous and its impossible to do well! Worse nightmare ever!
Cahill's class is very hard and time-demanding. His lectures are thorough, but boring. Make sure you read each chapter and do all of the in-chapter and end of chapter problems. If you do those and understand them, then you will do fine on his exams. I never went to his office hours, but I heard he was really helpful from other students.
I didn't think he was very good. I had a hard time keeping pace with his lectures. he seemed restless or something and didnt like to spend much time talking about one thing. i got a B w/ him and then a much easier A in chem12 w/ sadtchenko. something weird: he remembers me 2 yrs after i was in his class even though i only went to office hours once
His tests are NOT impossible. They are actually similar to the problems at the back. and he does curve at the end. He just doesn't tell his students how much he's gonna curve or whether he's gonna curve at all or not cuz he doesn't want his students to be dependent on it. Smart, huh?
He is a really nice guy. really interested in his subject, but doesn't give the most exciting lectures. i skipped about 40% of the lectures. just read the textbook. his tests are kind of hard, but he curves everybody's grade at the end of the semester. he's really nice if he knows you are trying hard
hE TEACHES SO WELL AND KEEPS HIS LECTURES ENTERTAINING
Greatest Chem professor. Really cares about his students (he knows everyones name at the end of the year whether you've been to office hours or not) and his class is really entertaining and fun.
Cahill is amazing- if you are at all considering taking a science class and are decent at the sciences, take his. He is the reason I decided to go to med school and almost major in chemistry. He's a fair grader, and although his tests are hard, he gives great lectures so you will be prepared for them. Helpful during office hours too.
This class was actually pretty easy, but he was a bit out of control with his lectures. He's say one thing, forget other things, and then jump around to add what he forgot. Come test time though, he was really accessible, and he even gave me a research position when he saw my interest in chem.
Awesome guy, Super hard professor. He lectures are interesting and I would probably have done a lot better if I actually went to them. There isn't any homework and attendance isn't taken so your grade is basically 3 tests and the final. Don't take his class if you wanna breeze through chem there are a lot easier professors out there.
I had him for Inorganic Chemistry. His class was kind of interesting but Gahill definitely had some issues. The kind of person that loves to teach but would lose his temper at the drop of a hat. It was his way or the high way. Certainly not what you expect from a professor. Most of this chem department needs to be replaced.
While certainly not easy, the difficulty is by no means impossible. His loser-y sense of humour makes what should be boring lectures less so. Overall recommended.
tests were difficult- but his lectures were very helpful and covered material that was on test- overall best chem teacher i have had! highly recommend
Cahill is by far the most knowledgeable of the Chem 011 profs at GWU. He teaches everything he tests on, but if you miss class, you will do poorly.
Cahill was a pretty good professor. He always kept lectures interesting. If you go to class, take good notes and do problem sets at end of chapters, you should do fine. Lab grade is 20% and definitely counts. First exam was pretty hard, but next two and final are much easier. He's also really good in office hours is the best Chem 11 prof by far
Do not take Cahill. His tests are too hard, and he does not teach everything that is on the tests. He teaches from the perspective of a chem PhD expecting us to simply know facts as he does.
My favorite class this semester! He makes class funny and interesting! He's also real friendly and approachable. Even though he is harder than the other options out there for a general chem course, he is by far the best! We had Raymaker one day as a sub... He was such a bore! Take Cahill, you will not regret it!
It was easy for me to get an A ;)
Cahill is the hardest professor that I have ever had! He does a good job at keeping lectures interested and attendance is not mandatory. His exams are impossible!
Professor Cahill is great. His tests are hard and you have to work hard to get a decent grade, but he is willing to help you. His lectures are very clear, and if you aren't great at chemistry he is very helpful. He takes the time to get to know you if you put the effort in and go to office hours. He truly wants his students to learn and understand
His tests are soooo hard. Classes aren't too hard but the tests are way harder and more in depth than we go over. I think he has too high of expectations for a gen chem class. Also, he seems to get a little frustrated if you aren't on the level expected.
Professor Cahill's class is one of the best I've taken so far. You're going to have to work at it; his exams are comprehensive and cumulative. But if you stay on top of your work, you'll learn it. And he's just such an awesome guy too. Highly recommend.
Cahill is probably the best chem teacher when it comes to lectures but his tests are IMPOSSIBLE. I studied for 3 hours daily, did the problems in the back of the book, went to office hours and still failed every test. I recommend taking a different chem teachers class. He is very funny though.
The class is really hard, but Cahill does his best to help you. He's a funny guy, but if you want to do well in the class, definitely do the readings before class to understand the lecture and definitely do the practice problems.
I took the Science of Nuclear Materials with Professor Cahill and it was great! I learned a lot and had a great time in the course. Interviewers for prospective jobs have also been really interested in hearing about it, so as far as I can tell it's a great career move for policy folks who want to stand out.
I highly recommend Cahill as a professor, his exams are fair as long as you study the example problems he does in class AND the final is made of all the old questions from the previous exams he's given you. Plus he's funny as hell
What an amazing professor! Professor Cahill made chem 12 extremely interesting and entertaining. Every lecture was filled with hilarious jokes and a crystal clear explanation of the material. Read the book before lecture and do his "faves" and there is no reason you shouldn't get an A!
probably best gen chem professor. really good lecturer. If you ever have a problem with a topic, GO OFFICE HOURS. Exams are a bit tricky, but for the most part they are very straight forward. Doing favs is very helpful for exams. If you put in the work theres really no reason why you shouldn't end up with a good grade. awesome professor
Awesome professor. Explains concepts like a conversation instead of like a lecture. He's very well prepared and truly cares about students. Some exams are tricky and you'll need to study, but he's an excellent professor. Highly recommend.
Ok. I disagree. Took Chem 1111 and was doing great. Chem 1112 with Cahill was a nightmare. His teaching style is terrible and confusing. He writes on the white board disorganized and makes mistakes over and over again. For someone like me who is not a chem wiz - this class and his teaching was a NIGHTMARE! I did not get anything during lecture.
Great Professor, take Gen Chem 2 with him.
His tests are literally impossible. They're 40X harder than anything in the book. Its absolutely ridiculous!!!! But his lectures are cool
Cahill is SO funny. Even though I hated Chemistry, he kept me awake and laughing during lectures. There are three exams and a final. I think the only reason I did well was because I took AP Chem. But the material was still pretty dense and difficult when learning it. He's helpful in his office hours, as are the ULAs. There's pre-lecture assignments
There is a midterm and a final exam (each worth 20% of final grade) as well as homework assignments and labs every week. Let's not forget the final paper that is worth 40% of your entire grade. It's a LOT for a grad student and if you don't truly have an interest in the topic, I would suggest against taking the class. Cahill is nerdy-funny.
If you do his faves from each chapter then the tests will be straightforward. The lectures can get long but he is funny.
Great professor, would highly recommend. This class was a good break from the usual boring lectures. Cahill was informative and interesting, and always liked to throw in a little humor into his lectures. Not difficult if you go to class and keep up with assignments (take them seriously)
Its vital that you read the powerpoint notes and do the homework if you want to do well! You also need to read the textbook and understand it well, because the notes do not give the full picture of the material. HW is a must, but doing the "faves" aren't. Also, exams are not curved but they are not that difficult.
I walked in this class with some background knowledge in Chemistry. His lectures were clear and concise. He did prepare us well for the exams as long as you did the post lecture homework and understood it instead of just blindly copying it.
General Chemistry 2 is hard but Cahill is good at clearing it up and highlighting the important points. If you work hard you will do good. Lectures are funny and clear. Going to his office hours really helps too even though he can be a little mean sometimes. Look over lecture slides and make sure to check grading on tests.
LOVED HIM. Even though I only got a B and B+ taking him for chem 1111-12, I really feel like his teaching approach helped me master the material for the long term. Used different ways to approach problems by combining different topics and incorporating knowledge from different chapters. I have an A in orgo now. MCATChem majors, TAKE HIM.
Great professor! Very helpful and understanding. lecture slides clear and organized. No outside material on his tests. If you pay attention in class and study the lecture you should be fine.
Cahill is the man. That's all there is to it. He is absolutely hysterical, and I look forward to going to his class. He doesn't assign homework which sounds nice but it just means you have to learn and practice the material yourself, which I kind of like. Already signed up for his class next semester.
Cahill is awesome. Very entertaining and very passionate about chemistry. He really knows his stuff and is very knowledgeable. He makes his expectations clear. Put in the work, do the faves, study for exams, got to office hours with questions and you will succeed.
If you are like me and just need a class for a requirement and don't actually need to learn chemistry I do not recommend Cahill. There are much easier professors. I really struggled in this class. My friend and I studied hours for the last exam and both of us did not do well.
super duper fun guy. perhaps the most entertaining professor i've had in college. most professors come off dull and robotic, but Dr. Cahill shows his personality in his lectures! He loves talking about his kid too which is adorable. My recommendation is to go to class and write notes onto the slides he posts beforehand. beware, the curve isn't much
I was really nervous to take chem for science majors as it was a major risk for my humanities GPA, but I wanted a challenge. Professor Cahill was a very clear lecturer and always happy to answer questions. I was able to be successful and I learned a lot. He loves to crack dad jokes and show pictures of his adorable son to help us distress.
Impossible unless you have A LOT of previous chemistry/math knowledge. Has a phD in Chem so he doesnt understand which concepts are hard for students. Cahill PLEASE do lecture capture! Being able to review actual lectures (not PP) would help SO much. Overall a really nice guy, funny & definitely not boring, but I wish I took a different professor.
Literally the worst. His tests are impossible even if you have done all of the readings, practice problems, and more. He expects the class to be on the same level as he is.
Cahill is a great guy who cares about his students, but his tests are impossible. What we learn in class is nothing compared to what his exams are. The averages are all super low and he doesn't curve (except for the department curve at the end). If you want to do well, you have to really work for it and go to lectures.
Professor Cahill is challenging, but he is a great teacher. Not only does he do a fantastic job of explaining content in class, but he also makes himself incredibly accessible to students outside of class. He is clear about what will be on the exams -- especially the final.
I wouldn't recommend taking Professor Cahill if you're not heavily interested in the sciences, but as a pre-med student I couldn't have asked for a better professor. If you do ALL the things he asks you to do before tests (chapter faves, office hours, etc.), you'll be a chemistry pro by the end of the semester.
he cares about telling as much jokes as he can during lecture and office hours. He does not know how to explain things directly and in few words that I sometimes felt lost even when I knew what he was talking about. TAKE NOTES DURING LECTURE. ATTENDANCE is not required but helps you do better in his exams. I do not like him as a person.
Professor Cahill is a wonderful professor with passion for what he is teaching. Tests are hard but mainly because of how tough chemistry is in itself. Attendance is not mandatory but go to lecture because he'll hint at problems that will be on tests. Would recommend if you want to really get something out of chem.
Cahill is the professor to take if you're going to opt to take general chemistry. And I would advise you to be careful when you choose general chemistry - this class is difficult. The book is dense. You really need to study and care to get a good grade. But, out of all the chemistry professors, take Cahill. He teaches and his averages are higher.
I would not have been able to get through Chem 1111 without Professor Cahill. His lectures are not boring and his patience with students and accessibility outside of class are a couple of his best qualities. He makes you want to go to class and learn, of course adding a few jokes into the class here and there. He is a great guy and amazing teacher.
Professor Cahill has a great knowledge of chemistry, therefore he has very high expectations for his students. Tests are impossible, with the average usually being below a 70. Cahill's lectures are humorous and helpful, but he can tend to be condescending when speaking to him one on one.
Very condescending and rude when you go to his office hours for extra help. Tests are impossible
Cahill is the rudest person I have ever met. He makes you feel like you're the dumbest person if you ask a question in class. His tests are impossible and he isn't helpful during office hours. TRY TO AVOID IF YOU CAN!
He told me to try to choose a different career path and quit pre-med because I got a semi-low score on ONE exam. I think that speaks for itself.
Cahill is the reason I wanted to combust. The class is only based on 3 tests and a final, the test are difficult and long and even when you know what you are doing theres not enough time to complete. nice guy but very intimidating during office hours, gets impatient easily forgets you arent a chemist. would avoid but if you have to take him its ok.
Cahill is fairly nice and funny most of the time. I took CHEM 1111 with him and wasn't too displeased, but CHEM 1112 was so much worse. His tests are impossible, and the multiple choice count for a ridiculous amount of the point. Short answer questions are much harder than the examples he does in class. Office hours always busy: not very accessible
Professor Cahill is honestly someone you should stay away from for CHEM 1112. He is okay for general chemistry I (CHEM 1111). He is hardly accessible during office hours and constantly forgets that the students don't have a Ph.D. in chemistry. Tests are impossible and averages are in the F or D range always. AVOID if you can.
Chem is always hard no matter who you take it with. He was very funny though. If you want to do well, you'll definitely have to work for it.
I am a chemistry major, so i enjoy the subject. This teacher is terrible. Gives unreasonable exams, is rude, and not funny. Take anyone other teacher available. Grading is unreasonable because exam questions are unfair and nothing like the practice.
I'll say this once and only once, unless you want to spend your days and nights trying to teach yourself chemistry, do not that this class with Cahill
He teaches the topics well but started getting confusing during mid-semester a litte. If you read the chapters and take notes, do all of the questions he assigns, and pay attention in class you'll do fine. I probably would set 4-5 hours per week to read the chapters/do. He does joke a lot, but sometimes it hurts. Otherwise, he's a great teacher.
Really good at explaining concepts and makes class entertaining! If you want a good grade, you really have to listen to what he says. The class average for exams gradually went up throughout the semester, so its possible to improve!
Chem is always a really challenging subject, but I thought his lectures were super interesting and he was good about giving extra credit. He is tough on you in office hours, but it helped me to learn more. He wants to see his students do well, but also will not help you unless you make the effort.
Gen Chem at GW is hell, but it is because of Cahill I was finally able to pass. He explains in a way that actually makes sense, and even though the tests are rough he curves! He also genuinely cares about your success and wellbeing.
Cahill is amazing. I mean he can be a little rude because he's all about that tough love, but sometimes you just need it. If you put in the effort and work hard, you will do fine in the class. I did all the readings, all the faves questions, and problem sets and I was able to get an A.
CHEM 1112 is a difficult class in general, but Cahill makes it slightly more bearable! He is funny and gives great lectures, and will always stop to answer questions. However, he goes pretty fast during lecture so make sure to review your notes after to make sure you understand everything. Do the chapter FAVES and problem sets and you should be ok.
Even if you did everything he tells you to do, it is still an extremely difficult class and a good grade isnt always guaranteed. Though, he is considerate and helpful at office hours. I recommend him for chem 1111, but not much for this class unless you want a extreme challenge.
Avoid at all costs for gen chem 2 (unless your naturally VERY good at chem). The exams do not match the caliber of class material at all so it's quite difficult to adequately prepare. Also he doesn't post slides with his notes on them aka all of the work for the example problems.
The lectures DO NOT match the exams whatsoever, I have taken AP Chem before and I had great difficulty on his exams. Avoid at ALL costs for Chem 2, he is a very unfair and harsh grader and even if you follow all his "advice" like doing the favs and psets it still does not help because he throws rediclus questions on the exam that we haven't covered
Cahill is an amazing professor. He inspired me in chemistry. Wonderful and funny man. Fair professor. Chem 2 is hard, but he makes it bearable and kind of fun!! Take Cahill if you want to learn and do well :)
I had Dr. Cahill for Gen Chem 2 and he is the best chemistry professor I have ever had. He is engaging, fair, and informative. Chemistry is difficult, but if you are willing to put the time into the class, you will succeed. His transition to online was practically seamless and I didnt feel like I lost anything by going remote.
Cahill is a good professor, and explains things pretty well. He has a nice sense of humor and is very straightforward. From what I've seen in other classes, Cahill is better. Lots of studying for this class- do the psets and faves and you'll be set for at least a B in the class.
Cahill is a nice professor, although his class is challenging he is very helpful. If I were to do it again I would go to his office hours more because he's great at explaining content and tries to have fun during lectures. Do as much practice problems as you can bc the exams were heavily skill based and a little outside the box.
Cahill is definitely the better choice for Gen Chem II. The material is hard and to do well in the class you got to do the Psets and faves. The tests were all MC and mostly application. Try to go to office hours so he can get to know your name/face.
Cahill is a solid choice in the Chemistry department. One of the best professors I've had for a stem class. Do his study guides/practice problems and take notes in class and you should be fine.
Prof. Cahill is by far the best chem professor at GW. The class is very lecture heavy, he always breaks up the lectures with little jokes and stories, which make it a bit more bearable. As long as you do the chapter favs, psets, and read the textbook you should be fine.
ABSOLUTE WORST! AVOID GEN CHEM 2 AT GW. extremely rude and doesn't care about students whatsoever. exams are extremely hard and he tells you to do the practice problems and you'll do good, that's not the case tho. aleks homework take forever and aren't even helpful as the questions are so easy they don't show up on the exam.
Gen chem 2 is a hard class, but Cahill is probably one of the best professors within the chem department. The tests are hard, but the ALEKS and your lab grade will even it out in the end.
Cahill was an amazing person, he truly cared about his students. The class content was difficult, however, he was a fair grader. This class had a lot of homework, just because the ALEKS took forever. Overall a good class, definitely could have done better performance wise if I was taking less credits.
Chem is a hard class but Cahill made it as fair as possible. This class requires a lot of time and effort to do well (lots of homework, lecture notes, practice problems). Cahill made lectures as interesting as possible - he's easy to talk to, answers emails quick, and was willing to meet with you if you needed it. Highly recommend him for CHEM 1112
He told me i should reconsider being in his class after i asked a simple question in office hours. Worst teacher i have ever had, on top of the fact he's extremely condensending. Changed my mind about my chem minor after this..... im a biomedical engineering major and engineering classes are light work when compared to this "INTRO" level class.
I think Dr. Cahill is a really nice guy who cares about his students succeeding. This is a tough intro course for sure, but he lays out all the material you need for each exam. He provides a lot of practice problems which really helped me do well on the tests. He is a funny guy and always tried to make chem fun. ALEKS is a pain though.
Cahill is probably the best professor in the chem department. He breaks up lectures with small jokes, which keeps people engaged. It's rare to find a professor who cares enough to do that. Go to office hours! He wants you to come and he's easy to talk to. He can be slightly blunt but don't take it to heart. It's tough love, he wants you to succeed!
I think prof. Cahill is a nice guy overall and considering how bad our chem dept is, he's prob one of the best ones we've got. He makes dad jokes and tries to keep us engaged. His exams are difficult but not the worst i've experienced from GW chem. I think this was a fair class in general. ALEKS is useless and horrible tho, so time consuming.
Awesome dude. Really cares about us. Tests were hard but do the practice problems he gives you and you'll do fine. Final was impossible and he doesn't curve at all. GO TO ELSI SESSIONS FOR EXTRA CREDIT!!! Starting from the beginning of the semester! Adds 3pts to final grade!!
