Callam is the best ochem prof at OSU. His tests can destroy you at times, but 253 is different, it's more luck of the draw, but callam will always help you if you want it (anytime he's free), he explains everything very well, same goes for lab, either take callam, or take someone else and go to callam's lectures, beware though, no grade curve,
The hottest professor every in OChem. At 6'2" Callam stands talk amongst his fellow faculty. I wouldn't be suprised if I saw him on the cover of GQ magazine for sexiest man of the year! Just by going to his class u not only learn something however you become smarter and I think a study is underway about how much you IQ goes up by to. Take him!
Dr. Callam is without question the best professor of any core science at the institution. Effortlessly, he demonstrates the fundamentals of OChem, clearly and accurately unlike most of the other OChem professors I have encountered or heard of. I would take ANY class with him you could. Not only did I learn from him, he made me a better student.
He is an great teacher, as long as you keep up with the material and do his work. I would recommend him,and he is always in his office to help!!
Tests are hard as hell but excellent professor. He seems to like hot chicks and smarties. If you're not in those category, it's harder to communicate with him.
He is extremely helpful, wants you to understand the material thoroughly. His tests are reasonable. Keep up with the labs, do the problems sets and the study guide. Highly recommendable.
Rather overrated judging by the comments on here. Exams are very hard, lectures are very clear, attitude is very cocky, and yes, he is helpful, but not more so than any other prof I've encountered during 2 yrs at OSU. Would not recommend him over other teachers.
For those of you taking the MCAT, PCAT, or DAT, this is the class for you. Yes he is hard and you will spend hours studying for mediocore grades, but you will be well prepared for the future. Sacrificing your grade now will benefit you later. Callam is brilliant and incredibly helpful. Best chem professor I've had yet.
he is a great instructor. take the time to have organized questions when you go to his office hours instead of sitting in there and doing the problem sets. he recognizes hard workers. i don't see how anyone can not like him.
Best Professor I've ever had. You have to be prepared to spend a lot of time on this class, but it's well organized, the exams are extremely hard but fair, and he is more than willing to meet and go over material with you. If you put in the time, and have constructive questions to ask, you will learn the material & do very well. Take this class!
One of the best professors I ve ever had! makes ochem simple and kinda fun. I did not understand gen chem at all but he made ochem real clear. I got an A in the class but you have to put in a lot of time into this class but trust me its worth it! I would definately try to get into his class.
Didn't understand gen chem, hated it with a passion, didn't exactly have high hopes for ochem especially with its reputation. callam is pretty much the best there is, you will have to work hard, but you learn so much. I learned more from callam in one quarter than i did in all of gen chem. do whatever you can to get this guy, he is the OCHEM GOD
You really need to know the material and understand his midterms for the final. Class is very fast pace.. it honors level if not faster.
The BEST teacher I've ever had. He's pretty much a GOD. I hated gen chem with a passion and took ochem just to see if i would feel any different about it, and i did! The material was tough, but he made it seem easy and taught it in a way that you understood it. He was always willing to help. Definitely go to his office hours and do his problem sets
Not sure what the fuss is all about...he was ok but not great. Definitely knows his material, but wouldn't one expect that of a prof? Test material is difficult & I agree with the "old boys network" comment. Wouldn't recommend him over others.
excellent professor, exams are fair. The most helpful professor i have seen in ohio state. the lab manual is very well written.
Really cool guy, good teacher, very willing to help but tries to trick you on the exams. Final was BRUTAL. Make sure you do lots of book problems and know all the details.
slightly overrated, knows his stuff and is available almost all the time since he's in charge of all the ochem labs so he's pretty much always in celeste. formal reports are graded harshly, mention too much, you lose points, don't mention enough, you lose points. midterms are your typical callam midterms but are slightly easier.
Extremely passionate about helping students.
Extremely clear and fair with what he will be testing on. I have experienced 5 ochem teachers and he communicates the best. Extremely prepared, and has written the lab manual. Knows his stuff, duh.
i went to his office and sang the lyrics "don't cha" by the pussycat dolls to him. he got kind of annoyed and told me i should only come to his office if i had serious needs. later i brought him cookies and he was cool with me. he is a decent teacher and loves old rock and roll songs.
The BEST professor I have had at The Ohio State University. The exams are difficult, but it's Ochem...they should be. Do the book problems, do the problems sets, and most importantly...GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS! Seriously. Not only is he very willing to help his students, he is really laid back and easy to talk to. He is a baller, fo sho ;)
What is everyone going on about. His exams are extremely easy if you prepare for them. great teacher, very helpful in office hours, intelligent, personable, overall just a great guy/prof. Can be slightly pompous to people who don't take the material seriously. There is no excuse for doing poorly in his classes. He will always help if you ask.
He is the BEST teacher at OSU. He's very clear, helpfull, funny, HOT. He knows what he is talking about. If you take notes during the lecture, you'll get an easy A.
makes class fun, really difficult but its more the material than him, you learn so much and i found him to be really hot
I have to say that I heard great things about Callam's class--"hard, but you'll def. get an A if you try!" I was pretty optimistic, but a little bummed with the B I got, considering how much I enjoy Ochem. He's a great guy, very helpful, and has great TAs. The class is just really tough! Definitely make sure you attend, and do the practice HW sets.
Hottest teacher at OSU! He's incredibly intelligent, explains the material perfectly. I took Fraenkel in the beginning becuz I read of how easy he was by comparison but he is a terrible teacher, doesn't speak clearly and doesn't give you practice problems. Callam responds to emails ASAP and is always willing to help!
I walked out of this class having learned more than I have in any other college course. He cares so much about his students, and is the most patient person I have ever met in my life. I went to his office hours almost every day, and he welcomes that. If you take anyone else for Ochem you are insane.
pretty good
Don't get me wrong, Callam is a great teacher, but his class was hard. Taking it fall quarter there were quite a few honors students. Large curve, my grade went up a grade and a half (still got a d+), but the tests were murderous (and I don't usually say that). I would recommend him if you are smart and want in depth knowledge of the subject.
good teacher hard exams
If you need ochem and you have the chance to take Dr. Callam's class, seriously, don't even think twice! He's a top-notch professor. His notes are very clear and understandable, he gives problem sets that are valuable for studying, and he posts all his old quizzes and tests on carmen. He will help you get an A if you're willing to put the work in!
this class was cake if you put in the time. go to his office hours all the time if you want an A and talk about football if nothing else. as for having "a lot of honors kids," it tends not to matter if you can get A's before the curve on the tests (and also if youre one of them too)
AAAAMAZING professor, the best ive ever had. i would choose him as my professor for any class. exams are semi-difficult, but its o-chem so that is expected. he is extremely clear in his lectures and is very willing to help you understand.
Dr. Callam is the best professor I have ever had. He is the most helpful, the clearest lecturer, and the nicest guy. Also, in regards to the post under mine, he does tons of research actually. Definitely the best organic chemistry professor by far.
He doesn't do research, so he has a lot of time to devote to teaching. The second exam was brutal but he kept encouraging us and I aced the final. It requires A LOT of time, but do all the practice problems and get help if you need it and you'll do fine. Really focus on the first exam because then it's easy to ride the curve. My fav prof by far!
This class really wasn't that difficult. Go to Office Hours and have him make you additional, harder problems, as the ones in the Practice Problems are too easy and not like what you will see on the exam.
I will be finishing grad school soon, and Chris is the best prof I've ever had. He's a nice guy too. Take any class he teaches, and you can't go wrong. I do agree with everyone else though: you obviously have to work hard to do well. This is Chemistry... if you don't want to work hard, you can get the hell out.
I had Callam for 251, 245, 246. He's definitely the best ochem professor at OSU. He's clear and concise in lecture, his tests/quizzes are fair, and there's always a big curve. If you work hard, you'll do well! The one negative is his unfriendliness when you ask him for help unless you're a cute girl or you want to talk football.
This class is very easy as long as you know what you're doing and keep up with the work. Doing well in this class has absolutely nothing to do with who is teaching the class. It all depends on how much work you put into your studies. Grab the study guide from the back of the lab manual and be answering the questions THROUGHOUT the quarter. A+
Callam is an extremely good professor. Everything he teaches, he explains clearly and it is understandable. The quizzes are OK but the exams are hard. You have do put in as much work as you can. Any previous ratings that say his class is an easy A in Chem 251, should be ignored.
This class was not nearly as bad as some people say. Don't rush the labs! Take your time, it will pay off. It's easy to get high points on the lab reports; quizzes are difficult but you'll be fine if you do the prep work in the lab manual. Same goes for the exam. Callam was crystal clear in lecture; fantastic professor!
chem 246 is a class that really depends on your TA but the professor does give the lecture exams and he did a decent job preparing us for it. He also went over the lab material with us and shared interesting information that made class worth attending. He is also very nice in giving all the lecture slides online so you can skip class.
Great guy, extremely interesting and dedicated to helping everybody learn the material. Exams are fair, and if you study what he tells you to study, they are not as bad as some will tell you.
Dr. Callam is definitely one of Ohio State's best. He is certainly not easy, but he is hands down the best at teaching the material. He puts in a huge amount of effort into making plenty of resources available to his students. I would recommend Callam over ANY Ochem professor at OSU without hesitation. Take him if you have a chance.
This class was very easy. If you do the study guide at the back of the manual THROUGHOUT the quarter, you will get an A. Just don't do anything stupid in lab. Go to Dr. Callam for help if you need it He will be more than happy to give you additional problems, he also respects those that work hard and don't cram. Again, do the study guide, get an A.
I had never taken an honors chem class before, but I decided to do it this quarter because Dr. Callam was teaching it. He is not easy, but will explain the material far better than any other prof. He knows that his exams are tough and will reward your hard work at the end of the quarter. If you do all the problems he assigns, you will do well
This was was very challenging. Callam's tests were extremely difficult, but I feel prepared to move on to the next class. Don't take him if you're looking for an easy professor.
I was scared to take his Honors course because he is challenging, but I am glad I did. Hands down the best professor at OSU. He explains things so that you understand instantly and provides a great deal of practice problems so that you feel comfortable with the material. He is also very approachable and wants you to succeed, very helpful. Take him!
Callam is pretty much a perfect professor. He's extremely enthusiastic and really seems to enjoy teaching. He is always there to offer help if you need it, and he has a way of making even boring parts of chemistry interesting.
I've had callam for 251, 254, and 255. He is a very organized, fair teacher, but he can be arrogant. also, good luck getting a question in at office hours, where the same members of the callam worshippers ask about every minute detail.
truly is a God..amazing proff
I had Chris Callam as my Organic Chemistry teacher for 2 or 3 classes. It was his first year there, roughly 8 years ago. The fact that I remember his name, and would bother to write a review should tell you something. He was easily the most memorable of all my teachers, and I'm glad to see that he's still there. Awesome teacher, but not easy.
I made sure to take as many OChem classes with Dr. Callam as I could because he is one of the most amazing teachers I've ever had. He has his flaws, but overall he is extremely intelligent and helpful. His exams will make you learn critical thinking skills; pure memorization is not enough. I grew to love OChem because of Dr. Callam's teaching.
I had Dr. Callam for 251/254 and 255 and he was an incredible teacher. 251 sorta blew me away because as much as I studied his exams were really difficult, but the curve in the class is huge. Overall, hes a great teacher and a great guy, I enjoyed just talking to him about random stuff. Hes always there to help students pretty much 24/7
Awesome teacher and great teaching style. Actually understood Chemistry.
Dr. Callam may be intimidating and scary to encounter at first, but after you get used to him, you will find out that his organic chemistry teaching skills are far beyond what anyone would have expected out of any professor. STUDY, STUDY, STUDY! He's no easy A at all, so do problem sets and work hard in his class! You will not regret it at the end.
Callam was meant to teach college ochem. He really cares about his students and will do anything he can to help you succeed.
I had Dr. Callam for Chem 251, 254, 255, and 253H. He managed to ignite my interest in chemistry and my love for organic. I spent a lot of time studying, but it was worth it for how much it has helped me with the MCAT and biochem. If you actually want to know and understand Organic Chemistry, Callam is a great professor.
AWESOME PROF!! I learned so much in his class and he is very knowledgeable about Ochem. He could clearly answer any question that I had. I'm taking 254 instead of 245 just so that I can have him again! Take callam and you won't regret it!!!
I love Callam! I was terrified coming into Ochem that I was going to fail, it was going to be really hard, etc. Although it is extremely hard (Who are we kidding its ochem) Callam made it so much better! If you need to take this class make sure you have him as your prof! I love ochem now because of him!
Callam is not easy by any means. Talking with friends who had other profs, I deff feel more knowledgeable than any of them. Callam really teaches you what you need to know in depth. MUST TAKE if planning on taking MCAT, PCAT, OAT, or DAT. Curve was astronomical b/c tests were hard. He's fair and a great teacher! The ideal college science course
I had to really bust my a** in this class! I was taking two other upper sciences (baaaad idea). Its almost impossible to get an A, but a B is doable with a whole lot of work. I was putting 40 hrs a week on this class alone. Exams are really tough so brace yourself. He's really arrogant but u get what you need from him and leave. Good luck to all!!!
Good teacher who enjoys teaching this class. He gives a lot more of his time to students then most professors so he is extremely helpful. He can seem arrogant to some people but he just wants the points to be clear and not BS his students. I managed to get an A (so its possible) in the class but I did the problem sets and old exams many times.
Really excellent professor: encourages you to ask questions in office hours/lecture, really seems to care about students, gives chalk talks, is excited about teaching. Ochem is difficult and it can be easy to do poorly by making small, dumb mistakes, but the tests are fair and he had plenty of old exams on carmen to help you out :). Good luck!
Callam was one of the best professor's I have had at the OSU campus. He is extremely helpful (especially if you go to his office hours) and really enjoys teaching his students. His tests are very hard so study the book, do the problem sets and the homework problems. There is a huge curve at the end so try your best because it will really pay off.
Without a doubt the best professor i've ever had. The class is difficult but he makes every effort to help you along. He really is approachable and welcoming anytime. He even helps me now in my chem lab classes. Seriously if you are going to take organic chemistry, get callam.
If you have him for lab I suggest going to office hours and having him check your formal reports. Good clear lectures.
Idk what these idiots are talking about. He ignored me every time i was in office hours. If you're not one of the his lovers he will not give you any attention. A TA told me that callam told his TAs not help students so that they will come to him and makes him looks better. He's extremely lazy when it comes to 254.
Definitely has his favorites. He much harder and more work then it needs to be. He is veryyyyyy arrogant and will not even look at you while you talk to him!!
You can call him Chris
Chem 255 was definitely easier than chem 254 although Callam's good lecturing was a constant. He is very good at explaining concepts and is enjoyable to listen to in class. If you show you care is does a lot to help you succeed. The only knock against him is he tends to be a bit arrogant (but he's still the best ochem has to offer).
Seriously the nicest, most approachable chemistry teacher ever, yes i'm a girl, but there were plenty of boys that came to his office just as much as me, who he was just as nice to. His class isn't hard, it's just a lot of material. He is one of the only professors that actually push you to apply your knowledge instead of just regergitate it.
Had him for 251, 254, and 255. That said, I think he is a great professor and lecturer, but not such a great person. He came off very snobby and belittling whenever I would try to ever interact with him 1 on 1 and I would always walk away wondering why I even bothered to ask him or think he would care. He expects a lot, but you will learn a ton.
Best teacher I have had at OSU so far. He gives you all the tools you need to succeed and challenges you to use them. He provides tons of practice midterms and problems that makes the class easy to understand. He will also always open his door for a student who is putting in the effort to learn. To get an A just do your work.
Women love the dude. Great teacher. Hard class.
Callam will push you like you've never been pushed before, but in how many other classes can you finish the class with a 57% and get a C? He expects a lot of you, but is really good at being motivating, and you'll definitely learn a lot.
He is a great teacher. He is always in his office and more than willing to help. Just make sure to work really hard because his class is very hard. If you do all his practice problems tho you should be fine.
Callam is one of the best profs I have ever had. He is very dedicated to helping his students and provides all the necessary tools they need to excel in ochem. I recommend him to anyone wanting to take ochem lec or lab. Do all of the work assigned and you will do fine, and retain a lot of info. Recommend for pre-meds.
Callam is a very good professor, his exams are hard though and you will struggle with them. The labs are way better than the gen chem series though and the TA's are awesome!
I didn't have any problems with Dr. Callam himself some of his TA's though are brutal while some are easy. That however will not break your grade it could only make it because he gives points to sections with low averages. My #1 tip is to be extremely thorough in your labs in every section except procedure and in the procedure follow his format.
Best prof ever. Lectures are crystal clear, mechanisms are written out in detail. The material is pretty easy and the exams are NOT HARD if you do all his practice problems. He's incredibly helpful in office hours, but don't expect any sympathy if you go to whine about how hard ochem is. My TA was a notorious grader, but he curved her section.
He is the best professor I've had at OSU. Dedicates all of his time to the success of his students. Read the lab manual and be as accurate as possible in lab experiments. Exams or "quizzes" are almost exactly like the practice problems.
Terrible.............
BEST ORGANIC CHEMISTRY PROFESSOR EVER!I truly enjoyed his ability and want to help students. Tests and finals were hard but if you go to his office hours, study all the material and ask as many questions as possible, you will do well!
Avoid this professor. I had to work hard for his class. He expects you to think "critically" (whatever that means) and actually do work for his class. I had to study for hours to get a good grade. He's a terrible professor because he has high expectations and expects you to give 100% for the class. Avoid him unless you have time to study
Best professor at Ohio state so far. He puts in a lot of time to help students do well, responds to emails quickly, and provides a lot of resources. Overall great teacher.
The worst teacher I've had.The worksheets he gives at the beginning of the semester expect you to have prior knowledge in Ochem. I wish I had a different professor.
I am honestly interested in the material and put a lot of hard work into this class only to discover that it does not pay off. Dr. Callam makes an already difficult subject much more difficult than it needs to be. He does not give his students the benefit of the doubt and penalizes heavily for the most menial of mistakes. Avoid if at all possible
I loved chemistry and breezed through every single class until I hit this. I'd say I studied a good 3 hours a day and I'm still in jeopardy of failing. Way too difficult of a professor.
LOVE Dr. Callam! He's always willing to help. Maybe the class is hard, but if you go to the help room once or twice a week, you'll get an A.
Callam's lectures for the lab class were much better than Paul's. You will have an endless amount of (pointless) powerpoint slides; save some paper and just bring your computer. 2540 had no quizzes/midterms. The class needs some restructuring. Work load was high for 2 credit hr course.
I really like him as a teacher, but the material can be quite difficult. The reports take forever and I really recommend going to office hours because you'll need it to understand some of the concept questions.
He is by far THE best professor I've had at osu...yes he is hard, but not unreasonable. Even though I didn't get the grade I wanted I loved the challenge
Best Teacher I have ever had. Perfect tests! He makes the exams just one step harder then the examples and hw. If you understand the concepts well you can adapt them to any changes!
Callam is an amazing professor. Take this class if you actually want to learn organic chemistry. He's not the easiest, but he really knows his stuff. The lectures are very organized and he posts a lot of resources on Carmen for you to use. If you put in the effort, you can get a good grade. He's very charismatic and my favorite prof by far.
Callam is a decent professor. He will push your brain to the limits, however. His exams are very challenging, too. Just make sure you study and review the lecture materials a lot. The only really bad thing is that his voice is suuuuper monotonous and hard to listen to for long periods of time. I fell asleep plenty of times in his class.
Made a beginner's class too difficult to even continue to build interest. Had to drop his class and ended up with another prof that taught the same material in a much clearer and slower pace. Students are memorized by his confidence and intelligence as I was, but he isn't meant to teach
Dr. Callam is the best professor OSU (or any university) has to offer. Organic Chemistry is a difficult subject, yet he manages to make it interesting and accessible for all students. Additionally, Dr. Callam is readily available to answer questions via email, at office hours, and before/during/after lectures. Rearrange your schedule to take Callam
Dr. Callam was a solid professor, but RIDICULOUSLY difficult. The weekly quizzes in lab are not bad, but seeing as you have to do a written report sheet, a narrative of every procedure done during the lab, and actually complete the lab all in 4 hours, the quizzes just add to the time crunch. Make sure to read the lab manual a LOT. Good luck.
Learned a crap ton. best teacher but hardest examiner. You have to start studying as soon as he teaches the material to get an A. that is, if youre not a genius person like me! he always helps if you go to him, just dont expect him to come to you, there are 400+ students in all of his classes.
Dr. Callam is an amazing professor but his test are extremely difficult. The first midterm is fine but after that, things went downhill. He's really willing to help and he explains everything well but the final tests you on concepts that you haven't really seen. For me even after studying for the final for almost a week, I still did poorly on it.
Dr. Callam is by far the best professor I've ever had. His exams are certainly difficult but he gives you all that you need to succeed, it's up to you to step up to the plate. He expects you to learn how to problem solve so if you want to be spoon fed and do rote memorization take someone else :).
Class is definitely difficult, but Callam is fair and an excellent teacher.
Dr. Callam is one of the best professors I have had. He teaches in a very straightforward manner. He takes you from point A to B to C in almost any case. With that being said, his exams are very difficult. You have to study a lot (probably for any professor though) to do good on the exams, but you surely can't blame him for a lack of preparation.
Dr. Callam is the best professor I've had at OSU. He is an excellent lecturer and provides ample resources. His exams are tough but he makes ochem bearable. Challenging, but I would definitely take him again if I had the chance.
Has very hard exams but he definitely gives the resources to do good on them. Best professor I've ever had
I feel that Callam is extremely overrated. He is average at best, and not approachable at all. He gives looks of disdain when asked questions after class, and rushed though the material like you wouldn't believe. You could ask him to slow down but he would just give you a dirty look. He was more helpful through email. I had high hopes.
Callam is awesome. He is by far the hardest organic professor, but makes up for it by preparing you the best. Compared to my roommates in other sections, we had way more difficult exams but way more to prepare from. I would definitely take him again. He makes everything really easy, making concepts and mechanisms much easier to understand.
Omg it's so frustrating how overrated this guy is. I'm not saying I dislike him as a person but this class was one of the most frustrating and unfairly graded classes. I was so annoyed because sometimes you don't know what kinds of copious details these people want??? I spent hours everyweek on this class...
Callam & Paul are two of best professors at OSU. I am so glad that they teach the OChem labs rather than some other professors. I have learned so much from just listening to their lectures. They are both extremely accessible and friendly in office hours. Anyone that says Callam is "overrated" probably shouldn't have been taking Ochem to begin with
Dr. Callam is the best professor I've had at OSU. His class is very hard but you learn so much from him. Lectures are a must and his problem sets are also quite useful. If you want to get a proper Organic Chemistry experience, make sure you try to schedule him for 2510.
Dr. Callam was a really good professor for the o chem lab course. Compared to my CHEM 2510 course, this one was significantly easier. The quizzes each week are easy if you study the material, and the final exam is not as hard as it could be. It's very very fair, so I think anyone can get a good grade.
Callam is one of the best professors I have ever had. His classes are hard but his lectures are very well structured and he is very knowledgeable. He is also pretty funny and lectures aren't too boring.
Easily one of the best professors at OSU; his lectures are crystal clear and he's very willing to help if you do need it. Exams are very difficult but certainly fair if you put in the effort. Just go in with a willingness to learn and managing an A is definitely possible. Don't underestimate how much he will push you to learn and you'll be fine.
Dr. Callam and Dr. Paul are nice guys and all, but be prepared to hate your life and have anxiety attacks all the time over a TWO CREDIT HOUR LAB! I do more for my lab course than any other class and severely affects how much time I get to study for the actual Ochem lecture! Might as well sign over your life and sanity when you take this
Really great professor, gives you all the resources needed to pass you just have to find the time to put it in. Midterms are hard, but he gives you all the resources you need to succeed on them. Very helpful in office hours because sometimes lectures have a lot of material. Really glad I took him.
Callam is perhaps the best professor I have had. He enjoys his job and his students. While he provides you with everything you need to pass, his tests are difficult and require a lot of study time. His office hours and practice exams are really helpful though. His ability to help any student that comes to him amazes me. Great Professor!
Callam is a super clear lecturer and is always willing to help his students. If you need help, he will make time for you. His exams are tough, but if you put in the effort a good grade is totally possible. I ended up really enjoying this class that is usually dreaded by many thanks to Dr. Callam!
Dr. Callam is the best professor I have had at Ohio State. Great lecturer and gives you all the resources you need to succeed. If you are willing to put in the time and take hard tests, I'd recommend him.
Callam is seriously the best o chem professor we have at Ohio State. He should run the whole department. He gives you SO many practice materials for quizzes and exams that there is no way you could end up doing poorly if you focus and get them all done. PLEASE go to lecture, the book is useless and he really knows how to teach!!
Dr Callam is a smart guy. I think he's the smartest person I've met at OSU yet. This class is usually only taught by Paul and him, so no other professor options are available. But, the midterm is not as hard as in the past. The average was high and unless you kill the other averages, you'll get a B+, like me. Destroy averages and you'll get an A.
Callam comes off as an arrogant guy, but is really down to Earth and willing to help you when in need. I used to email him at midnight at most of the time, would get a very clear response right away. His tests are hard so I would study weeks before. Quizzes are raw points, and he gives so much practice material that the book was useless. TAKE HIM!
Not going to lie: I worked my butt off in this class. Without a doubt, his exams are some of the hardest I have taken. However, this is the most I've ever learned during any course at OSU or in general, for that matter. He's hard, but he's very fair. I would recommend him to anyone. Just be prepared to put forth your best, every day.
Dr. Callam is my favorite professor at Ohio State so far. His lectures are so clear that they can give you a false sense of confidence so be careful. He gives out tons of example problems and tests and answers all questions during office hours, which I highly recommend. Another plus is the quizzes, if you prepare for them.
He explained concepts very well. We understood ideas that people in other classes didn't have a clue about.
Callam was the best professor I've ever had at OSU. He always explained things clearly and made sure he taught in a way his students could understand. Tests were pretty tough, but if you put in the effort, it's not too hard to get an A in his class.
Dr. Callam is by far the best professor at OSU. His lectures are simply amazing. I barely put in any effort outside of class and still got a very high grade in his class. My OChem 2 class makes me miss him already.
Literally the best professor for the subject. If your going to take an organic chemistry course yes hes probably the hardest but you will learn SOOOOOOO much and might even learn to enjoy it. He is by far the best teacher Ive had to date and I was that kid that sat in the back of the class.
Super great guy and professor. Will help you if you put the time and effort into it. He curved our class so much I don't understand how people can complain. He cares so much about his students and cares that you understand the material. Be aware that a lot of people come to office hours. Definitely my favorite professor so far.
Callam is a great professor. He presents the material clearly and concisely. If you show you care and want to succeed he will help you so much. He's super approachable and incredibly smart. You can gain a lot from him. He also provides a ton of extra practice. Utilize it and utilize him for questions and you should be fine.
Dr. Callam is by far the best professor I've had at Ohio State. He provides so much extra practice to help you study, and his lectures are fantastic. He clearly wants his students to succeed, and if you go to class and study then a good grade is easily attainable. I would definitely recommend taking his class if you can.
Go to TA hours, and refresh yourself on lab techniques on YouTube if it's been awhile. I personally hated the course, but o. chem material is on graduate examinations, so I took it anyway. His exams are the worst if you have test anxiety.
He is very smart and does a very good job of passing that knowledge onto you. Tons of practice problems. Expect difficult exams with at least one or more challenge questions that make you apply what you learn. Although its sometimes better just to skip those and make sure you get all the realistically attainable points on the exam. YOU WILL LEARN.
Got a B in ochem 1, and I'm lucky. I never went to a single office hr, and I didn't study anywhere as much as I should have. I regret not doing better in his class. Did amazing on the 1st midterm but got 50% (avg) on the 2nd and the final. It was rough. You can't fall behind, even when it's hard. you GOTTA push through. It's tedious, but worth it
Callam is bomb. TAKE HIS COURSE. You will have to put forth lots of effort, but you will learn a great deal because of it.
most intelligent and helpful professor. Clearly coveys complex ideas. understands how to effectively teach organic chemistry
Must take professor on campus. One of the only good and sensible professors left on campus. Enjoyed his class very much and learnt a ton. Also provides great one on help if needed and has regular office hours. Wonderful teacher!
OChem 2540 is not impossible to pass. Do the labs sincerely following the guidelines. Don't miss the lectures. Overall, work hard and you won't regret taking this class with Dr. Callam. For exam, make sure you know all topics covered throughout the course. Review sheet also helps a lot.
I had Callam for 2510, 2540, and 2550. He is phenomenal as a professor and as a person. He is exceptionally clear and explains things really well, always pushing you to try harder and challenge yourself. He always answers questions and is very on top of everything (more so than Dr. Paul). Do the work, go to office hours, and you'll be fine.
Simply the best
Dr. Callum was a good professor and was more than willing to help students. That being said, his lab quizzes were often quite difficult and I rarely felt prepared. The final was ridiculously hard! Print out the notes and study early. Go to the TAs as well. They were super helpful for lab report writing and IR Specs.
Only 3 weeks in and I love this professor. First day he makes you feel invincible and then he spends the rest of the semester breaking things down and encouraging you to keep working for it. He rocks. Do the problem sets and practice quizzes.
he is one of the best professor in OSU
His lectures are very engaging and easy to follow; you just have to show up and pay attention to get the jist of it. But the best part is the sheer multitude of resources he provides: example quizzes and exams from previous years, extra problem sets, reference videos, etc. Everything you need to study is available, and it's essential to study.
This guy is the MAN. Toughest organic prof here but we're working with pure genius here.
Hands down the best professor I have ever had. Brilliant organic chemist, teacher, and mentor. Class is difficult, but extremely rewarding. 10/10 would recommend taking him.
Callam is the best teacher I've had so far. His lectures flow very well, he comes prepared. He explains things clearly while still using the important terms and concepts. He posts enough material online that even though I had the book, I only used it once. Will only succeed in this class if you attend lecture and practice problems every day.
Dr. Callam is a great professor, but because of that he expects more of you on the exams. He gives you a lot to practice for quizzes and exams, though it never really helped me on the exams. Im pretty sure I failed this class. If I could go back, I wouldn't have taken his class. Great guy though, just teaching an extremely hard class.
Great guy and great professor. Although exams are incredibly hard. I have put in so much time and effort into this class, but I'm not even sure if I am going to pass. Learned a lot, but obviously that doesn't get you too far. Good luck.
Makes OChem very easy to understand. Very clear in his mechanisms. Tests are very difficult, but he truly tests your understanding of the material. Study, work hard, and you'll do well
Fantastic. He is the best professor for OCHEM. Very tough, has high expectations. However, teaches everything crystal clear, lectures are mentally stimulating. Pretty large curve in the end of the class. Go to class, and practice everything you can get your hands on and you will be fine. He is a genius, teaching style is fantastic, cares a lot.
Dr. Callam was a great professor. His lectures were great and he was crystal clear about everything he was trying to teach us. He also gave us A TON of practice material, including many old midterms and final exams, which were very helpful for studying. That said, his tests were tough and getting a good grade took a lot of effort.
Callam was by far the best professor I've had at OSU, especially in the Chem department. His lectures are very clear and he teaches O-chem in a very straightforward and understandable way. Midterms and exams are tough, but you really learn something in this class
two midterms, and a final. 6 quizzes. everything is doable if you practice all the old quizzes, old midterms and problems sets. With hard work and a willingness to ask for help you can do good.
He's an amazing professor, but his tests are extremely difficult.
Dr. Callam is an amazing professor and person. He makes a dreaded class enjoyable. Definitely my favorite class at OSU so far. Tests are hard but doable if you use all of the resources he gives. Go to his office hours as often as you can. Get ready to work extremely hard, but if you do all of the problem sets and practice you will be successful.
Callam is a genius. I say that because he knows the material extremely well but he also teaches it extremely well. He is super clear. He gives you a TON of practice material (practice problems, quizzes, old exams) and if you have time, do it all because it is exactly what his exams will look like. O chem is tough, no doubt, but Callam is incredible
I have taken Ochem twice and the first time I took it was with Callam. He is a great professor and is willing to help but I must warn you. If you are not a strong chem student or you know you struggle with harder classes, do NOT take him. I learned a lot from him but I struggled a lot b/c he expects students to know the information back to front.
Dr. Callam was by far the best professor I've had at OSU so far. For a subject everyone dreads he makes it so much more enjoyable. I loved going to lecture (and I don't love chemistry people)! He gives you so much practice and explains things very clearly so you can understand them. Hard subject, fantastic teacher!
Incredibly intelligent. Very friendly and approachable.
I found it tough to pay attention in class simply because we had no required tests or quizzes that I had to know the material for until the very end of the class. Basically your entire grade is based on the test at the end, no matter how well you do in lab. That being said Dr. Callam is a great lecturer who explains the necessary concepts well.
I have Dr. Callam and Dr. Paul for the OChem 1 Lab and they is great. You can tell that they both are interested in what they are teaching and wants to see their students succeed. I don't think class is mandatory because they post their notes online, but Dr. Callam is a smoke so why not.
The best. I despised gen chem and was dreading O chem... but Dr. Callam is a fantastic professor and I actually look forward to his lectures. He is great at explaining the material and throws in comic relief... good at keeping students motivated, helpful in office hours. Exams are not easy but he gives plenty of practice material to prepare you.
Dr. Callam is by far my favorite professor I have ever had. He is very willing to help his students and truly wants them to succeed. He is willing to meet outside of class and opens his office hours early. Do the problem sets, practice quizzes and go to class. If possible hit up office hours. Very personable. Very funny. Makes O chem enjoyable.
By far best professor I have had in my life. He is very accessible, personable, funny, and inspirational. He goes above and beyond to help his students out. His tests can be difficult but he really prepares you. If you are premed, TAKE CALLAM. Great lecturer, great in office hours, and great in lab.
Best teacher I have ever had. He cares so much about his students, and even if he is super hard, he insures that you understand the material and will go out of his way to meet with you
Dr. Callam was absolutely my favorite professor at OSU. Not only is he a genius, but he's able to explain it in a way that makes sense to struggling, stressed out pre-meds. He was always available to work out kinks in understanding. The exams are difficult, not going to play that down, but do the practice problems, they help a lot.
Arguably the greatest science professor at Ohio State. He's a genius and amazing at teaching you organic chemistry. The exams are extremely hard, so you cannot wing anything in this class. You'll have to work 5 days a week and it'll really make your hairs turn grey.
Dr Callam was one of the best teachers I ever had. He teaches o chem in a way that college students understand, and makes lectures as interesting as a chem lecture can be. He teaches you everything you will need to know, but tests are still very challenging. He really makes you work for your grade. Worth it though.
Callam is absolutely the best professor I've ever had. His lectures are incredibly clear and he makes learning OChem as simple as it can possibly be. His exams are difficult for sure. You'll have to study a lot but he gives you TONS of practice for every topic. 100% recommend, he's a great guy in and out of class. TAKE CALLAM!
Simply the best. Excellent lecturer- I barely touched the book. Very difficult exams; you have to do all the practice problems (he gives you a ton) and go to office hours regularly to ask questions. Dr. Callam is really funny, really caring and it feels like he knows everything. I love him and couldn't ask for anyone better. Decent curve too.
OChem lab II midterm is harder than lab I but if worked hard, passing won't be a problem. Spectroscopy quizzes will be there so master it. Both Dr. Callam and Paul are great help for passing this class.
Amazing professor. He's a really tough professor but you learn so much. He gives you a ton of materials to succeed in his class and I recommend you do ALL of them! Do all of the previous quizzes he posts and the weekly quizzes will be really easy. Do all of the practice exams and GO TO OFFICE HOURS! Curve was amazing - went from a C to a B.
Dr. Callam is the best science professor at OSU. He makes a hard class really enjoyable. He is great at explaining all the material in a way that you will understand. Definitely do ALL the practice problems, quizzes, and exams. He is genuinely nice and really cares about his students. Don't be afraid to ask questions and go to office hours.
Dr. Callam is an amazing professor. He is by far the best professor I have ever had, as well as one of the coolest people I've met. His exams are difficult, but he fully prepares you for them. You never need to read the book; he supplies you with all the practice that you need. He is great to talk to during office hours, and is extremely helpful.
Dr. Callam is far and away the best instructor I've had the pleasure of learning from. He knows the material he teaches better than any other professor I've taken. Lectures move at a fast to sometimes feverish pace, but they are always very clear. Take good notes and, you will not need the book. If you have to take Ochem, you for sure want Callam.
Provides you with all the material you need to succeed in the course. I never knew the definition of hard work until this class. After putting 12-15 hours a week into the class (plus more during exam weeks), I finally figured out how to do well. Callam will help you in office hours (GO TO THEM) but come prepared to learn, not just get answers.
Almost no work, but pay attention in lecture or you will find yourself not knowing how to do the unknowns 2 days before the midterm/final.
Dr. Callam is one of the best professors at Ohio State. You can tell he really cares about his students. Pro tip: try not to be too intimidated by him, hes really nice if you actually talk to him!
If you are taking OChem it's going to be hard, no matter what professor. You might as well take one of the best professor at OSU.
Dr. Callam was a great professor. He gives you plenty of practice problems including exams and quizzes from previous years. The current exams and quizzes were very similar to the practice. Take Dr. Callam, do the practice, and you will succeed. Don't fall into the trap of thinking Ochem is too difficult.
Dr. Callam is one of the best chem professors at OSU. Dr. Callam's tests are difficult but he goes over concepts and mechanisms well in class. Nothing on his exams are something he hasn't gone over and they are all completely fair. There's a lot of practice material he gives you and he really cares about his students!!
Callam is well-respected in whatever he teaches. With Dr. Paul, the two did a fantastic job of teaching the class. I learned a lot and surprisingly had fun along the way in what I expected to be a lot tougher of a course.
As usual, Dr. Callam is the most brilliant. Personally, 2520 was a lot easier than 2510. Almost an easy A. Just make sure to pay attention in lecture, do the problem sets and the practice exams--and go to office hours so you can ask your questions. This class was amazing!
The lectures are interesting and he is great at responding to emails. There's also a lot of resources provided by him so that you can practice outside of class. The quizzes and midterms are always harder than the practice, but that's the point. It's the only way to know if you truly understand the material.
Dr. Callam is a good professor, but he teaches so many things that you don't need to know unless you plan on getting a PhD in chemistry. If you just want to do well, take another professor, who will have less tough exams.
Callam is a great professor and very smart. His humor is one of his best attributes. If you go to lecture, take good notes and study, there is no reason you cannot do well in this class. The O-chem textbook is also extremely helpful. His tests are very hard if you skip class, but can be easy if you study your notes and do all the problem sets.
I struggled in gen chem, but Dr. Callam made ochem fun for me. He is really good at explaining what is going on and provides so many materials for you to practice. While its not an easy class and I study basically every day, Ive definitely learned from him. His midterms aren't impossible if you put in the work. I recommend
Dr. Callam is a great O Chem teacher. I definitely recommend him. Love him loads.
Daddy Callam is such a gem and let it be known that this is the first time I have enjoyed and genuinely learned from a chemistry professor. His lectures are loaded with information so you def can't skip but he makes learning fun! He's funny, kind and really approachable. Also, he's always willing to meet one-on-one to make sure you're understanding
Dr. Callam basically played bad cop and taught the spectroscopy part of the class which is a hard topic to teach. He did his best and used as many examples as possible. But he's not a very accessible lecturer.
He is the best. Can't wait for 2550 with him. He is a great lecturer and really breaks things down so they are easier to understand. The midterm is kinda tough but the final is a huge opportunity for bonus points. Definitely not a tough class if you pay attention and study.
Was definitely a very difficult class but I would never take it with anyone else. A truly amazing teacher who cared about his students, and definitely my favorite professor I've had at OSU. Hilarious, well organized, overall great. It's a challenge, but I loved it and he made the course manageable.
Very smart guy and a great professor. The course itself has an annoying amount of work for a 2 credit class, and it's very easy to miss a deadline for an assignment. But it's ochem, so what else would you expect. Regardless, him and Dr. Paul are great characters and are awesome to talk to. They make the notorious ochem much more bearable.
I love Dr. Callam! His class is not easy by any means but he gives you tons of practice problems and old exams to study from. He is very helpful in office hours so go and ask questions. His exams are very challenging but if you prepare enough ahead of time, you will be fine. Curve was nice.
Dr. Callam is really great. He cares about students. His lectures are clear and he gives great resources for studying. However, o chem is very hard and his exams are 2 hrs long & very difficult. He combines several concepts into 1 problem. I'm going to retake the class because I'm not happy with my grade. Requires lots of practice outside of class
Callams the best prof at OSU and he prepares you extremely well for exams and makes a hard subject super interesting. The material itself isnt hard and with practice, a good grade is definitely achievable.
He is without a doubt the best professor I have ever had. He did an amazing job of explaining the material in an interesting way. Definitely recommend going to lecture because he lets you know everything that it important to know for the tests. Do the problem sets and old exams that he posts online because those are most like his exam questions.
Callam is a real gem. He's funny, draws perfect hexagons, and has never made a mistake on paper. Callam is very good at explaining things because he anticipates what students are thinking.
Dr. Callam is great. The lectures are clear and informative, and interesting for the most part (as much as chemistry can be interesting). OChem Lab is a tough course, and honestly your TA can make or break your grade, but Callam himself is very helpful. The exam is tough, but he offers a lot of material to help you prepare.
A great professor. The best option for any o-chem class. He posts his notes on carmen and gives students plenty of resources to learn/study from.
BEST teacher I've ever had. He's hilarious, lectures are fun, and he explains everything so well, he's perfect. Book is pointless but don't skip class, do all the problem sets, old exams/quizzes, and go to office hours. It's a lot of work but he will go above and beyond to help you. Callam is a genius, no doubt he will change the world one day.
BEST PROFESSOR EVER! I LOVE DR. CALLAM. He is a real gem. His exams were hard but he is really cool and makes you love O chem (no joke). Take with him. I don't know what else to say. Definition AWESOME. such a beautiful human being
Dr. Callam has been one of my favorite science professors so far. He explains concepts in great details and covers important material more than once. The quizzes were pretty fair if you actually attended lecture. He's also really accessible if you are unable to attend his office hours. I highly recommend taking him for O-Chem!
Dr. Callam is one of the best professors I have had at OSU! Super knowledgable and willing to help, especially if you go to office hours. Organic 2 lab is generally a little bit more difficult than the first, but definitely still manageable.
Probably the best professor I've had at OSU so far. Callam is a genius and a great teacher, he really helps you understand the material with his very thorough lectures and practice problems. Exams were really tough, but the quizzes were fine so it kind of balances out. Definitely do the problem sets and practice exams.
Callam is one of the best prof I have ever had, hands down. He teaches the content really really well but for that reason his tests are super hard but if you actually pay attention in lecture and do what you should be doing, the tests are totally doable. You have to work for it, but Dallam helps every step along the way!
Amazing professor! Makes a really difficult topic interesting to learn about. His test are hard, but his class prepares you for that level of difficulty. Well worth it to take his class. He is by far the best professor I've had at OSU!
Dr. Callam might be one of the most unprofessional and rude professors that I have had at my time at OSU. He made me feel as though I couldn't ask questions, and was very judgmental, even when I asked for clarification for certain problems. I recommend avoiding at all costs.
Dr. Callam's one of the best o-chem professors at Ohio State. However, he's also the stereotypical college professor. If you don't get something written down, he's moving on and he talks fast. He deals with different types of spectroscopy, which are then evaluated with quizzes in lab. Overall, it is evident that he knows what he's talking about.
Best professor I have ever had. His lectures are amazing and he makes you love ochem (which is hard to do, trust me). He's so funny and incredibly smart. He provides a lot of resources for you to succeed. His test are SUPER hard but if you do the problem sets/practice exams, they're manageable. Would not recommend anyone else, he's the GOAT.
Best prof I've ever had. Exams and content are challenging (as to be expected), but you will come out of this class with a new appreciation for chemistry that gen-chem stripped out of you. Dr. Callam clearly cares about his students and their success. I was dreading taking OChem since I was 15 but can honestly say I enjoyed this class w/ Dr. Callam
Love him!!! Lectures are really informative but takes a while to get used to the speed of his writing and talking, I appreciate that he writes everything. Exams are difficult but are doable if you work hard and do ALL the practice. He can come off as hard to approach but once you get to know him he really goes above and beyond to help you succeed.
Dr. Callam is one of the best lecturers and professor I have had during my time at tOSU. He clearly goes beyond teaching organic chemistry topics in a textbook like manner and includes various examples to make the class more interesting. However, the class is very difficult as he mentions several times. Go to office hours!
I had Callam for both 2510 and 2540. He is an excellent professor for both courses and a very entertaining lecturer. He gave us many problems to practice and was very clear about the material we needed to know. Make sure you take advantage of all the practice given to you (I did not and that was my main downfall) as the exams are very tough.
Gives decent lectures but will intentionally leave details out in an attempt to make going to office hours or seeking outside help mandatory. Assignments are often graded harshly and overall there is little room for error in the class. Just hope you land a decent TA.
Dr. Callam is amazing. He's so funny and charismatic when he gives his lectures. He's also extremely helpful when seen outside of class at office hours. This class is not "easy", but Dr. Callam tries his best to make sure you succeed if you're willing to show him that you will put in the work. He's really the best.
Dr. Callam rocked this course in terms of concepts for lab. This course is more reaction heavy than ochem lab 1 in my opinion, so it was good to have a professor like Dr. Callam teaching who was amazing at breaking it down to understand in a relatively short period of time. He was also always willing to talk outside of class if I didn't understand.
Very hard class, but he is a great professor who wants all to succeed.
I usually never write reviews but Dr. Callam is the best teacher I have EVER had. His lectures are amazing and he conveys everything extremely well. He made chemistry my favorite subject and I would 1000% recommend him. He is so nice and more than willing to go out of his way to help his students. Plus his notes on the board are literal art
Dr. Callam's portions of ochem lab lectures were usually very rushed (not his fault...). He did explain things very clearly, but I found that it was often a little too fast. That being said, he gives you plenty of resources to fill in the gaps. He is engaging, but the class is a lot. I would recommend. I took it in Spring 2020.
THIS MAN IS THE BEST PROFESSOR AT OHIO STATE. He is such a caring, charismatic teacher. Given you have to work extremely hard in his class, he makes it worth it. Smartest man I have ever met. Do all his practice exams and problem sets and understand them! And of course attend all lectures. He is an amazing teacher and an amazing person:)
Professor Callam made ochem quite enjoyable. His lectures were concise enough to make them easy to get through, and gave plenty of examples. He has tons of practice resources to prepare for quizzes and exams- take advantage!!
Dr. Callam has been an amazing teacher, and I look forward to taking 2550 with him next semester. Dr. Callam cares about his students deeply, is willing to help you at any time, is very approachable, and definitely knows organic chemistry! Yes, o chem is freaking hard, but put in the work and use him as another resource and you will do fine.
Dr. Callam is the best teacher I've ever had, and he did so well at teaching online. It's not easy to do that. He makes such an impossible subject seem doable because he is that good at explaining things. Do all optional work, don't read the school textbook, and read Ochem For Dummies I. Also, go to his office hours even if you don't have any Q's.
If you have to take Dr. Callam during the pandemic, he's a pretty solid choice. All of the lectures were asynchronous which was very helpful since all of my other classes were not.
The class honestly wasn't that bad, I just didn't put in enough time. Lectures were very clear and helpful, but there's lots of them so be sure to stay on top of things. Callam was very kind and understanding when I had some lab issues, seriously nice guy. Quizzes and the final were extremely fair. Put in the work and you can definitely do well.
Dr. Callam was a great lecturer, but his exams were ridiculously difficult. They did not reflect the difficulty of quizzes or practice problems.
Definitely take ochem 1 lab while taking ochem 2. Online the class was not bad at all. Labs were long but TA was so helpful. Lectures were decent callam is a good teacher. Ochem is a hard topic but hes the best at teaching it.
Dr. Callam is one of the best professors I have ever had. This class is really hard and takes a lot of time regardless of your professor. However, Dr. Callam is extremely clear about what he wants and expects from you on quizzes and exams. If you complete his practice problems/quizzes/exams you'll do great. Take him!!!!
I tend to be very critical of professors, but this guy earned my respect. Crystal clear communication, legitimately cares about students, and his exams - albeit difficult - are not insane if you really know your stuff. Good choice for Ochem lab 2.
Dr. Callam is really kind and responds to emails quickly when you have questions. He tries to keep the information fun and breaks it down into bite-size pieces so you understand better.
Dr. Callam is the best at everything he does. Had him for 2510, 2540, and 2550 (wish I had him for 2520) and got an A in each class and actually enjoyed learning from him. Would not recommend anyone more highly to teach such difficult material. Man is a genius that explains at an understandable level.
Too hands-off. No lectures and constant work on reactions we have never encountered. Unempathetic. Overrated. The amount of work you have to put in for a 2 credit hour course is completely ridiculous. Instructions are vague and rubrics are unpredictable and way harsher than instructions.
Organic chemistry is a really hard class no matter who you have - but having Callam helps. Very clear lectures that translate well to exams. Provides lots useful study materials. Office hours are very helpful. Just a pleasant person. I messed up my entire schedule to get Callam, and I didn't regret it for a second.
Callam is hands down the best prof I've ever had actually teaches me the material thru lecture. No shortcuts with any "learn the content outside class" crap. intuitively builds upon concepts you already understand ALWAYS answers any questions. Even the dumb ones. Even tho we're all dying, he still makes the content feel fun and exciting.
Callam is very hard to reach and too hands-off. He gives you practice problems but doesn't explain how he got the answer, and speeds through lectures so you're more worried about keeping up than listening to what he is saying. Zero partial credit and exams are ridiculously hard. If you don't want to end up teaching yourself, take someone else.
I was so excited to have Callam, due to past reviews. However, I have been really disappointed with the class. His lectures go by way too fast, and he is very hands-off. The practice material and quizzes are NOWHERE near the level of difficulty of the exams. All but 50 points of your total grade are quizzes and exams, so zero room for error.
I previously took chem 2510 with Baldwin who did flipped classroom which was zero help. I was able to retake chem 2510 with callam and get a B. His exams are hard but fair given how good his lectures are. This is the hardest class at OSU for most people but calm genuinely is your best chance for success.
Dr. Callam is great at explaining topics! He also provides lots of practice problems for students to do. His exams are tough, but office hours are super helpful when it's exam week! He also posts his lectures from when he taught the course online and those were very helpful.
Ochem is always going to be a challenging course however, he really made it much easier with the amount of resources he provides. I felt that his office hours were not quite too helpful however, I had consistency meeting him weekly for my questions. He was great with explanation and helping you figure out how to learn the material, don't memorize.
his lecturing style is really difficult; he lectures as if everyone already has background knowledge in the class. When you ask him questions, he explains in a very complicated and rushed way. The exams DO NOT reflect what he teaches in class. quizzes and practice sets are way easier than exams. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
Very easy to follow in his online lecture portion. The videos are quite long and sometimes hard to get through, but you need every bit of what he says; he gets straight to the point and can apply what he teaches easily if you pay attention. That's not to say you don't need to practice, you definitely do but there are plenty of resources.
Although organic chemistry is tough, Dr. Callam was a great lecturer. Finding professors in the chem department here who actually care about their students is difficult and Dr. Callam is one of those professors. His lectures are very well set up and he does a great job of teaching the information. His exams weren't the most difficult but still hard
He gives you weekly recitation worksheets that are graded for participation which is super nice. He is very good at making sure you get the big picture-- he ties in concepts from several weeks ago and is super encouraging. Fair grader, just make sure to study like hell for the second midterm-- I didn't.
He's in that Dr. Fus tier - if you can get him, do it. Still a hard class, but you have a good lectures and a LOT of practice to learn the material. As good as you can ask for.
I personally loved ochem lab! It was a very tedious and stressful at parts but at the end of the day this was actually enjoyable unlike lecture (*insert that one teacher that shouldn't be employed). It will be stressful and seem like a 4 crd hr. course but the points are broken down over a long period of time so it makes up for it. DLR's strict!!
One of the toughest classes I've taken. Although the subject matter itself is difficult the exams were sadistic. It was already hard to understand the content being taught in class, so when the exams tested "outside of the box knowledge" it became pretty difficult. The grades based on only quizzes and exams, leaving little room for error.
Dr. Callam was by far my favorite professor at OSU. Organic chemistry is hard, but he was always extremely encouraging and helpful in lecture and office hours. He's very down-to-earth and personable as well. His quizzes were basically copies of his sample quizzes, and practice exams were fairly representative of the real ones.
Best professor for this class hands down. Ochem is hard & time consuming but go to all of his lectures, rewatch the posted lecture videos, do the problem sets, practice quizzes, and practice exams and you are set. He makes himself very available to students and you can tell he truly cares and pushes you to learn. Never get behind in this class
Even though I didn't get the grade I wanted in this class, Callam is a good professor. He has a good and interesting lecture that's engaging and high-energy for the material. Most important thing is to not get behind, it's hard to cram for a class like his. Would definitely take again.
dr. callam is the best professor you could have for ochem. he moves fast but his office hours are a gamechanger. he cares and he really knows his stuff. if you want to do well, you have to go to lecture. you will not learn ochem on your own
Hes awesome, take his class.
The TA's are told to grade very hard, but as a lecturer Callam is great. He will walk you through any homework assignment as long as you have already attempted it once and can explain what you tried. Despite having him basically give me answers for the hw, I almost never got 100% on the assignments bc the TAs grade so harsh.
Organic chemistry is tough, but the professor does a great job explaining the material. Attend lectures, use the provided resources, and try unstuckstudy AI for study prep - it really helped me stay on top of the content.
It is a super tough class BUT Callum is amazing. Go to his office hours, it will help so much. He understands it is a tough subject, but truly wants his students to succeed.
Only person in the chem department who I feel isn't actively trying to weed students out
Dr. Callum is hands down one of the worst professors I've ever had. His quizzes and tests are a complete joke, and he waits until the last possible second to enter grades, leaving you stressed out during finals week trying to figure out where you stand. Avoid taking organic chemistry lab with him unless you enjoy being miserable all semester.
Dr. Callam is a cool guy. His lectures are very useful and he certainly gives you the tools to succeed. His exams are brutal, but the info he provides you is still enough to work through any problem. Certainly willing to help students out too. While this class undeniably is hard, he presents information in a way that makes it easier to break down.
Great office hours availability. Exams are all written response but there are inconsistencies in his partial credit and discouraged students from asking for a regrade due to it. Past exams and his old covid lecture videos are the greatest resource. Places a couple of extremely hard time waster questions on exams so good test taking strategy is key.
O Chem Lab was so hard mostly due to his unnecessarily difficult tests. He provides lots of material, but even when you feel like you understand the lectures, you still fail the tests. I would recommend going to the TA's office hours before your lab each week, that is truly the only thing that saved my grade.
Chris Callam is the Jack Sawyer of the Ohio State University chemistry department.
Dr. Callam is literally the best professor ever - everyone should take him for ochem. He teaches with clarity, is easily accessible, and clearly cares about the success of his students and single-handedly made ochem my favorite class I have taken. Yes, ochem is a hard class, but if you put in the work, you will absolutely end up succeeding!!
Hands down THE best professor at OSU! Ochem is a notoriously difficult class and he has cracked the code of teaching it. Dr. Callam is always ready to help and is incredibly knowledgeable. GO TO OFFICE HOURS (he has many throughout the week)! If your intentions are to actually learn ochem, you absolutely will.
It's halfway through the semester and Dr. Callam has been wonderful! He responded to my email 2 minutes after I sent it to him on a night so he deserves a 5/5 no questions asked. One of the best professors I have had by far!
I love Dr. Callam. He is very accessible during office hours and always willing to help. He has a good sense of humor and genuinely enjoys teaching.
Dr Callam is the nicest dude and his lecture videos are awesome. If you go to office hours, he will be very understanding to held you succeed. Class was pretty tough and quizzes were brutal, but the lab final was incredibly easy. I never had to put in more than 2-3 hrs per week to get my A.
Great professor. Go to office hours and attend lectures. Gives a lot of study materials
Ochem has been described as an extremely daunting class, but Dr. Callam assured us that if we worked hard enough and were intentional with our time, we could succeed. He's an engaging lecturer, and gives us all the material we need.
Im a straight guy but if Callam proposed to me I would say yes.
Took Ochem Lab 1 with this professor and the whole course seems backwards. The grading is horrendous, particularly the graded assignments with 2-3 questions each with 41 possible answers, worth 50 points. Mind you a quiz is 40 points, so you mess up one question on those and its worth more than failing a quiz. There were 4 of these assignments.
Honestly a good professor, Ochem is just tough material. He does a fair job explaining concepts during lecture, but extrapolates to much more challenging questions on exams. Considering these 3 exams are 75% of the final grade, I personally would have benefited from more realistic problems during his fast paced lectures. Also very very tough grading
Extremely overhyped. The exams are ridiculously hard compared to other 2510 sections. Almost no bonus or extra credit, and exams and quizzes make up 95% of your grade, drastically more than in previous years. He's a decent lecturer and a nice guy, but I would absolutely not recommend him if you want to finish the class with a decent grade.
Overall, Dr. Callam is a funny teacher and a nice guy; however, his class is very hard compared to other lecturers. There are no homework assignments, just quizzes, two exams, and a final. The exams are pretty hard compared to the content taught in class.
He's a great professor, very easy to reach outside of class, and clearly cares about his students being successful. HOWEVER! His exams are absolutely BRUTAL and you will have to grind hard to prepare for them. The class grades fully depend on your quiz and exam scores, so it's important to do well on those. Highly recommend Dr. Callam despite this
Callam seems very passionate about ochem and is very knowledgeable in the subject, but he often writes notes too fast and it is hard to both keep up with writing notes and listening to him teach at the same time. His exams are unbelievably hard! Even though he provides practice exams, he somehow finds a way to add harder questions on the new exams!
He's funny and a good lecturer, but he makes his exams way too difficult!! Your grade basically depends on the exams and the quizzes, so you have to do well. His exams are the worst I've ever taken in any class, genuinely. It's almost like he doesn't want students to do well on them.
It feels like no amount of studying can help you prepare for his exams (even with the practice exams). Don't do it to yourself.
This guy is definitely overrated. He makes an already hard class even more difficult with the exams he writes.
Ridiculous amounts of hw for a 2 credit hour class. He makes online videos that don't make sense a lot of the time and explains things as if we have already taken the class. Be prepared to extremely dislike your life for the next year!
For a 2 credit hour class the work load is insane. Everything is graded very harshly and large amounts of points are taken off for small mistakes. Quizzes (more like exams) are very difficult, especially for a lab course.
Lectures are helpful, and you will know the content probably better than all other lecturers. Funny and nice guy BUT, his exams are way harder/longer than other professors. If going to take Ochem 2 or tests like MCAT/DAT, I would recommend him because you need to know the content well to pass this class. Grade is all quizzes and exams basically.
No, the lab course is not miserable and a million hours a week; it's actually very manageable and interesting. The lab quizzes were borderline easier than 2540's, and the final was a joke. That being said, the TA's graded like every point they marked off was one grand to help their sick mother. I had to repeatedly go to higher ups for points back.
nothing has you stress like being in his class. lectures are great and resources too, but his exams? Diabolical. He has the HARDEST exams out of any professor and they are 75% of your grade. The more you think about the exam the worse you think you did. I'd take him again though lol. Get ready to crash out and tweak for 4 months straight.
So much work for a 2 hour course. Literally hours and hours per weekend for lab. Grades so strictly too. Go to office hours and get everything checked by every TA and every professor before submitting. Does not really line up with lecture 1, but it is definitely manageable. Just A LOT.
His actual exams are way harder than practice exams and lecture style questions. Start studying and practicing early and do as much practice as you can. You really do need to study 15-20 hours a week if you want an A.
Really great professor, it's clear he really cares about teaching the content but his exams are BRUTAL.
If you want to question your self worth, mental sanity, and reason for attending college, take this class. Christopher is a great teacher, however an great teacher IS NOT equivalent to an great professor. His exams are truly the spawn of the devil, you can study to your maximum and still perform poorly. This class does not set you up for success
Great lecturer, but Callam often extrapolates concepts beyond what's covered in lectures and past midterms/finals. Even when you study thoroughly and understand certain ideas, it's hard to apply it to his exam questions.
I think Callam would be an amazing professor if he made his exam difficulty up to par with his teaching. Unfortunately, his exams expanded past what he taught and the class ends up being miserable and scary. If you aren't required to take ochem 2, take anyone else. If you are, watch his lectures and please take someone else. You Will Suffer
This is by far the most difficult course I have ever taken due to the exams. Lectures are very fast paced (which I like) and he provides recordings of past lectures. Understanding ochem is one thing, but his exams require logic skills.
Dr. Callam's ochem class was genuinely a war to get through. One of the best lecturers I have ever had, and accessible for questions outside of class. Gives previous three years worth of quizzes and exams. That being said, I felt he extrapolates a lot on his exams and they are the hardest exams ever, and I felt it was more difficult than before.
Wouldn't recommend this professor to my worst enemy. Exams were absolutely brutal no matter how much you studied. Nothing can prepare you for the exams he gives, even the past ones he gives you to prepare. Take absolutely anyone else for this class if given the option or get ready to hate your life for the next four months.
So honestly if you pay attention to every lecture and take good notes you'll be fine. You'll have to study alot a couple days before but exams are extremely fair if you actually studied. Everything on them comes from the lectures so don't use any other materials than the ones he provides. Not as bad as people are making it out to be.
Ochem isn't an easy class but its also not unbearable like people are making it out to be. Callam is an amazing lecturer and explains everything in a simple manner. It does require 10-15 hours of studying per week but as long as you focus on understanding the why and the logic behind the concepts you'll be fine.
Chem 2540 will be the hardest two credit class you will ever take. An obscene amount of work outside of lab for a lab course (roughly 15 hr/week) including quizzes and pre labs. Lab quizzes are unnecessarily hard and will tank your grade. Our average on the final was a 38%. Virtually impossible to get an A in if taken concurrently with 2510.
Dr. Callam is a great lecturer. He clearly cares about his students and is very accessible: office hours almost everyday, responds quickly to emails, etc. His test are difficult, but he provided a ton of resources and truly wants his students to do well. Overall great professor.
Take someone else. Don't do it to yourself. Even if it seems like you understand the content, his exams will have you questioning your entire existence and if you even knew anything to begin with.
