Expect a lot of reading and writing, involving several different scientific and literary works, some of which may be very arcane and hard to read.
Very knowledgeable in his area of study and his lectures are so interesting. Be prepared to read and write a lot. He'll usually tell you exactly what's on the midterm and final. Not the easiest teacher but you will definately learn a lot.
His class is pretty hard expect to read and write a lot, but you'll definitely learn pleanty. DONT EVER TAKE HIM SUMMER SEMESTER!
may be easier taking his class during fall or spring semester instead of summer. expect lots of reading! his final is hard if you don't pay attention to the movies and dont read, but if you know how to write papers, you will survive.
Interesting class. A lot of videos and power points. A LOT of reading to do and a lot of studying, but its worth while. Great lecturer.
At first i was put off because the class was not what i was expecting it to be, but the class began to grow on me because of the effectiveness of "Dr. Bowtie's" teaching (as me and my friends call him.) His papers are easy but the tests you must be definately be prepared for or you'll get crushed.
He talked more about the relationships between sexuality and religion, history, and society than psychological aspects of sexuality. I didn't like how he lectured and was bored most of the time, but he is a very generous guy. Make sure to attend TA Mo's exam review sessions, they help you big time.
The best course I ever took at State: this guy worked us hard, but I am so happy he did. After I graduated four yrs ago, I realized just how crummy so much of my education was. Mostly a lot of lazy, burned out faculty giving out good grades and passing us. Carrington won't cheat you: take him!
he changed the whole course around and made it the most boring class that i have ever taken. Dont take this class with that man
Besides the overwhelming amont of readings the class is great. You will learn a lot!
Dr.Carrington is one of my favorite teachers. He is nice and generous person though the lectures are sometimes boaring but sometimes very interesting. The exams are based on reasings but they are not tricky at all, so you will be fine as long as you read assigned materials!!
lots of reading.
Too much reading for a course. The articles and readings assignment take up took much time and are hard to read and comprehend.
You need to show up for class to pass, as long as you know the readings, lectures and films you will do fine.
Before taking this class, I was told that they will be a lot of****. It was a turnoff for me but I had to take this class since it was my segment 3's CESD. Boy were my friends wrong. First, there was no**** and I thought everything that we had learned were very interesting, the sociology aspects of it. Take his class! Yeah, too much reading.
GREAT PERSONALITY, INTERESTING WAY OF TEACHING, LEARNED NEW THINGS THAT DEALT WITH SEXUALITY, LOTS OF READING, OVERALL A CLASS WORTH TAKING.
Funny teacher with a nice attitude.
Dr. Carrington gave me one of the best teaching experiences I've had in college to date. His attention to detail and desire for truth shine through all of his lessons, and I feel privileged to have been a student in his class.
Best teacher ever!
I took 2 separate class, one I withdrew from because there was a lot of work involved. The other one was a winter class which I aced. Dr. Carrington is a very helpful man. He knows his stuff and then some.
He was the best teacher I had so far... He made class intersting and fun, and shocking..lol for those who took him, they know what im talknig about...lol

Dr. Carrington is quite a character. We mostly watch movies. Lots of reading - boring books. 40 in class pop quizzes - hard. essays - tough grading. tests - hard. I would not take his class again - I took it only to fulfill my Segment 3. He is very strict and not understanding at all.
Great Guy, and extremely knowledgeable!!! I loved his class, I don't know who the person who wrote that comment below was, but it sucks!! He does expect a lot from you, but if you go to class everyday and pay attention, you'll do really well!
A greeeaaaat teacher!!! You'll love his witty sense of humor, and his interesting lectures. You will especially like the movie about polygamy, knee slapping fun!! There is some work involved, but it's all worth it!!!
Best professor I've had at SFSU so far, and possibly the BEST and most informative class I've ever taken! He is very confident, funny, articulate, and one of the top researchers in homosexual studies in the nation right now. I can't stress enough how EVERYONE should take this class; so fun! I looked forward to going to class everyday.
At first i didn't like the class, but once it got rolling and I got a 100 on the paper, I realized I really liked it, Carrington is intelligent and witty. His TAs are awesome, very helpful! Must take!
is a good teacher in the beginning of the semester, then progressively becomes worse. too much work for his class. bad readings. grading is not based on content, and rather on structure. blames his t.a's for stuff that he should assume responsibility for. incredibly harsh about attendance and being a second too late.
Need more teachers like this guy. Some readings were way too drab.
At first i thought i was not going to like the class but i ended up really enjoying my self. Carrington is funny and topics are pretty interesting. There is a lot of readings though.the quizzes are based on readings. final is way easier than midterm. Papers are graded fairly. Great class. Mo is his GA, great helper. Take the class!!
This is a wonderful and insighful class w/ 2 drawbacks. (1) He grades heavily on attendance and quizes by using a CPS remote. If you forget a couple of times (2-3) to bring this to class, it hurts your grade. (2) The readings required for this course. Most of the readings are boring and are 30 pages long!
Great Teacher. The first message below with the negative comment is whack. Carrington seems like a hard ass but in fact he isn't. final was mostly repeat questions from midterm and quizzes. Attendence is key. Good class overall.
GO TO CLASS! Your grade depends on it, no joke. Carrington is my fave teacher at SF State. He is incredibly knowledgeable, as well as funny, sassy, and cynical. I loved coming to class. Lots of quiz questions, so keep up with the reading. The way the class is structured makes it so you can get an A if you just DO what you're assigned to do.
I don't recommend this class. 2 essays, pop quizzes, midterm(50)+final(90)- tests taken via remote control on big lecture screen - no going back and changing answers. I did get an A, but it was really hard work. Lots of reading. When you forget your pad, you won't get attendance points. 2 extra credit review sessions + 1 extra credit survey.

it's hard to guess what grade you'll get - the last essay you never actually get to find out your grade. the quiz questions are often confusing. carrington can be ironic, he's really smart but i had to work really hard to get my a-. i'm not sure if it was really worth it. maybe for his class on aids it was?
Great professor.Backs up what he says with *current* resources.NOT too much reading, helps you get reading for grad school.I spent 30 mins, 3 tx a wk reading. Two term papers, attendance is crucial, keeping up with reading is crucial. You'll learn something, and he makes it possible to do very well.I hope to TA for him.SFSU needs more profs like him.
The class topic is interesting, but the structure is messed up. I can understand taking quiz questions with the CPS remotes but the midterm and final, too?! You can't go at your own pace or change your answers, so it hinders your performance. He over-instructs the papers, and sometimes the lectures are boring, but all in all, a good class. SHOW UP!
Make sure you go to class or you will not get better than a C. The remote system is not that reliable but he swars by it and there is a ton of reading. Its a lot of work but if you keep up you should at least get a B. Quizes almost every session, midterm, final, two difficult papers, and ATTENDANCE!!!

SFSU is lucky to have such an intelligent, openminded, eclectic and professional individual who is eager and knowledgable about such a taboo topic. Go in with an open mind, question what u think u know. 2 intense papers and he takes attendance. I recommend it, it's not easy, but it's worth it
Dr. Carrington knows his stuff. He uses the most current research. You *must* attend class and do the readings to pass. There are *lots* of readings. His T.A.s grade papers a little hard so don't try to b.s.
I have so much respect for this man's experience, intelligence, and desire to teach. Bad-ass professor who cares about his students and a sharp dresser to boot. (Not many people can pull off a bow-tie). BE WARNED: You're in college and he has this idea in his head that you can do work that requires thought. If you only want a grade, go elsewhere.
I really respect this teacher. I think his class is very straight forward. You have to attend and there are usually quiz questions at the beginning of class. They are sometimes a little confusing but for the most part what he talks about is what you need to know for the tests. it is not the easiest course but it definitely is not very challenging
In the 2.5 years i've been at SFSU i've never had a teacher like him and thats not a bad thing because he's the most passionate, inspirational professor i've ever had. However, his class is not an easy A requires 2 very intense term paper but give them to you a month in advance so theres no excuse,he his quizes and exams are easy anyway. TAKE HIM!
GO TO CLASS!!! uses very current information....TA's are helpful...not the most fun class, but a lot of movies... do the readings and the essays...SIT NEAR SMART PEOPLE!! it works...
this class is the one of the best classes i've taken in SF state, i learned alot about "sexuality" even though is was hard it was easy because of the topics. i got an A in this class, if anyone is interested in the history of sex and how people from different cultures viewed sex then they should take this class. the professor knew what he was talki
WONDERFUL TEACHER. He's incredibly open-minded and knowledgeable about his field. Very expressive and passionate about the subject.
Mr. Carrington is an interesting character. Being my first semester there, i wasn't expecting to read so much nor have short quizzes every class meeting. But overall, i would recommend him. 2 midterms, quizzes each class meeting about what you read for hw, Final--questions from the 2nd MT, 2 papers. Easy Class if you want to learn!
very respectable. knows his stuff. interesting topics. attendance is necessary because there's quizzes almost everyday, but is easy if you read. lots of readings. if you want to learn something, take this class. he's a cool teacher with a cute...smile. =)
i'm not a huge fan. although he makes some of the funniest jokes i've ever hear in my life, i don't get hom as a prof. his quiz questions are vague, he has a horrible format for midterm/final (cps remote) and the second paper's structure was more than confusing. i think that if i had understood what he wanted, i would have enjoyed the class more.
This was the easiest class i have ever taken at SFSU. Prof. Carrington gave so many extra credit opportunities to us that i ended up getting an almost perfect score. The only thing that could improve in this class was the guest speakers. It's hard to figure out how they've managed to make such interesting subjects so... uninteresting.
Awesome class, but very difficult. He rewards attendence, so SHOW UP! It makes a big difference. Dr. C is an awesome guy. Even though the class was huge, he took the time to make sure all his students didn't have any questions. If you didn't do well or was confused, then you should have asked him. He was more than willing to help.
He was Very Easy!!!! he gives you the answers to the midterm and final throughout the whole semester. His essays were a bit challenging, but overall, he is a great and easy teacher.
A relavatively brilliant man. Informed, articulate, opinionated, sensitive, interactive, humorous and interesting.
Prof. Carrington you rock!!!!
show up to class and do the essays and you will pass.
Carrington is a great professor! He is very clear in his lectures, keeps it interesting, fair with his grading, open-minded, and awesome overall! There are only 2 papers, a midterm, a final, and random pop quizzes throughout. The midterm are repeat questions of quizes, half of the final are the exact questions from the midterm. No reason to fail.
I was a bit nervous when I read the syllabus. But this class was pretty easy. Carrington is a awesome teacher. He is very knowlesgeable and very very funny and open minded. Great class. midterm, final, 2 essay--easy just requires citation. quiz question on CPS that you can talk discuss w/ other classmates. Overall, great teacher and class!!!
Views of sexuality begin to make alot more sense after taking this class, I learned alot and I would recommend this teacher to anyone, as long as they know how to write well.
GREAT PROFESSOR, HIGHLY RECCOMMENDED. He might seem hard and strict at first, but really he wants us to pass and gives a lot of extra credit. very knowledgable and smart and funny. ALOT of readings, but mostly interesting. easy class if you pay attention to all his lectures. one of the BEST class and BEST professor I've had at SFSU.
GO TO CLASS. LOTS of reading. 2 Easy papers b/c the TA's grade them. 1000 (yes 1000) pts possible. there are opportunities for extra credit, do them. To me, it was an easy A.
Dr. Carrington is awesome! He's articulate, helpful, and very clear about his expectations. Students shouldn't be whining about his ways, they should be happy that Carrington is a lenient professor. 2 papers, many mini quizzes, a midterm and a final. And in my opinion, this professor is hot!
Prof Carrington's class is easy if you attend and do the reading. All quizzes, midterm and final are multiple choice. If you attend the review sessions and again do the reading, they are not hard.
Brilliant, engaging professor. This class is easy and really interesting. There is plenty of extra credit. You get major points just for attendance. The quizzes and exams are very basic multiple choice questions. The lecture material is crystal clear and easy to understand. I feel as if I learned so much. Best class I've had so far at SFSU.
Brilliant teacher and full of knowledge! One of the best professors I've had at SFSU. Students can learn a lot from him and student can actually enjoy the class and enjoy (believe it or not) the quizzes each class period!
he is soooooo fine.... the class is cool too
dr. carrington is a wonderful professor. his class was enlightening.
Very good teacher. He knows the material and presents it very well and it is easy to pick up. Tests are easy as long as you read and pay attention in class. He's also very funny. Take this class!
Interesting, engaging professor. I have never been bored in his class. As long as you keep up with reading and have good attendance, you'll do fine. Very enlightening course.
He's such an amazing professor! Definitely knows his stuff! =)Honestly you dont really need the book because he has everything on reserve! Must read everything! although its long its worth it because most of those questions will appear on quizzes, midterms and FINAL!!! very fun class! =)please dont have cell phones and especially not laptops open!
Excellent professor. Take him. The papers are pretty demanding, do not wait until the last minute or you will not get a decent grade. You HAVE TO GO TO CLASS. Attendance is a large part of your grade, and besides that he'll sometimes give several extra credit questions in one day. If you go to class and pay attention, you will get a good grade.
everything is tediously done by CPS remote, midterm takes 2 days for 50 questions, tons of quiz questions almost every day, everything is worth 5 points so everything really counts, half the classes are just watching movies so you have to go, the papers take a lot of time just do them to the specifications, you'll get 100s, ends up mostly as quotes
Loved this teacher. I am personally a person who very much expects to get what they pay for, and if tuition keeps going up I would like to keep seeing Professors like Carrington who actually take the time to research each topic, is extremely well read, continues to update you on new news topics as well as e-mail you back if you have any concerns.
GREAT teacher! Informed, involved, caring, compassionate. Wealth of information, both current and on historical data. Up to date on many issues, Dr. Carrington is extremely knowledgeable. Read, do the work, show up for class, that is all it takes to get a good grade. Not to mention that he is AWESOME!!!
Great Professor! Knew all of his information, was very well informed, and the class was very interesting. As other people have noted, you definitely need to keep up on your reading and the papers are fairly demanding, but it is worth it. I learned a lot in that class and who can complain about getting to watch a bunch of movies?
This class is a challenge, but you'll get a lot out of it. Attendance is mandatory but that's only because lectures are precisely what you'll be tested on (as well as the movies and speakers). Dr. Carrington is a very intelligent person who you can tell has a passion for the subjects he teaches.
Great professor! There is a lot of reading and several quiz questions about it. Just read the reccomended text, attend every class and you will do great!
If you are strongly religious or timid hearing about gay sex, this class is not for you. I am amazed at the people who choose this class and then are so offended that they complain to the dean about what they hear in class. Expect to have your pre-conceived ideas about history, religion, and sexuality shaken a bit. This is why you are in college.
Carrington is a good teacher, really good actually. but his powerpoints are excessive-- he can't even teach the class if something technical goes wrong. also, you use a remote for attendance and the midterm and final, which is very different and i didn't like. but i learned a lot and there is a lot of extra credit to do. make sure you go to class o
This class was easier than i thought. its really intimidating at first, but gaining points is simple. go to class everyday (you receive points) and get answers for the quizes from other class mates (which is allowed!) and do the essays! he gives alot of extra credit as well. Midterm and final has alot of repeat questions from previous quizes.
Dr. Carrington is the best. His passion is teaching and he cares a lot about education
I looooooved this class & this professor! It was so interesting! Carrington has a way of teaching that allows you to learn the subject with ease. Attendance is a MUST!
This is my second class with Carrington, and once again, proves himself to be a vital componenet to SFSU education! His Families and Society course was simply amazing. One paper, one final, quiz questions, and attendance make up your grade.
Attendance is mandatory. Films were interesting to watch. The reading was dry but informative. Extra credit questions were made available. You have to purchase a remote in order to participate in class. You can login the class website to immediately find out your results. 98% of the class seemed to enjoy the class.
Great teacher. I learned so much from him. He is clear and thorough in his teachings. Attendance is a huge part of your grade! His lectures are interesting as well as the movies. You have quiz questions, a paper and a final....Not bad at all.
was one of the best classes i have ever taken at sfsu. dr. carrington is an amazing lecturer, extremely passionate and knowledgeable about the subject. take it just to open your mind a little. .
Amazing, wear different bow ties everyday. he is passionate, open, and real with the information. lots of reading and reading quizzes but the stuff is about sex and related topics so it really is interesting to read about.
attendance saved me from failing. i didn't do either of the 2 essays assigned. save print outs of your scores. i was about 10 pts over a C but was given a D.
I have a huge amount of respect for Dr. Carrington. He's an amazing and intelligent person with a lot of passion for what he teaches. I think this class is really important and would recommend it to anyone. Go to class, do the readings, and pay attention to what he says and you'll do fine on the tests. Put a lot of effort into the 2 review papers.
Best professor I've had at SFSU very progressive and doesnt sugar coat anything. Great class I recommend it to everyone.
Awesome teacher. I learned so much from his class. He is extremely intelligent and charismatic. Take his class!!!!
Great professor and the material was very interesting. I was disappointed though how difficult it was to get a hold of him and even after visiting him during office hours, an issue I had with a grading error was not resolved. I emailed him many times after but...no response, so I had to deal with it PERMANENTLY on my transcript! (since I graduated)
Dr. Carrington is an amazing professor and the information he covers is extremely interesting and relevant. Highly recommended.
Dr. Carrington, where can i start beside i love this class. well, he is a very intelligent teacher. he is very open minded person. passion about his topics. he can be very anal when it comes down to the review essays. to get an A in this class, make sure you're up to the readings because he assign POP quiz. lots of ex credit opportunities.
Dr. Carrington is the best professor I've had at SFSU. His class was an immense pleasure and challenge. Take outlines to class, READ THE ASSIGNMENTS, don't forget your clicker remote thing, and you'll do fine. Daily quizzes, attendance, 2 essays, one midterm, one final. I rarely read, but attended class and did fair on exams and essays. Got a C.
Best professor i have ever had. His class is tough but it is fun and worth every minute of it. His material is great! He is someone that i look up to and hope to be able to know the knowledge he knows one day! Must take class, must go everyday or you are screwed
This teacher is not only funny, but a great guy in general. His class is interesting, as are his views. If you are highly religious/easily offended, it's not a good idea to take him (but anyone else PLEASE DO!) Beware his head TA though. He could care less about the students, and grades a lot of the papers.
He is a great professor! Very eloquent and passionate. I learned a lot in his class, but you have to do the work.
LOVED his class!! I never read, but I did the two review essays & went to class every day. Will end up with at least a B. Pretty easy class just as long as you pay attention & come to class every day. Highly recommanded. I've definitely learned a LOT!
Make sure that you go to class and use your clicker because the attendance points as well as the quiz questions will add up. Most of the quiz questins are from the readings that he assigns, which are long. The final was not that bad as long as you go over the quiz questions from the whole year. The first paper was HARD!
LOVED his class! GREAT professor, a MUST take. I have learned so much from him. Attendance is mandatory, but class is always interesting. I have definitely learned some things in this class that was very worth sharing to friends/family. He really opened my eyes. I definitely plan on taking more classes from him.
2 major papers, 5 extra credit assignments. Numerous reading assignments and quizzes. A touch monotonous but very insightful. A dry sense of humour. Truly an eye-opening experience. Consistent work and attendance, follow exam tips given and listen to the lectures, especially the emphasis, and an A should be easy enough to get.
I LOVED this class! It was very interesting and Dr. Carrington is very insightful and knows his stuff. There is daily reading and quizzes, attendance is mandatory and there are 2 papers. I got an A which was fairly easy if you pay attention and come to class. I would recommend this class =)
Although there is a lot of reading, you will do well in the class if you read and attend every day. Dr. Carrington is EXTREMELY intelligent, helpful, and understanding and has a dry sense of humor. I recommend this class to everyone, even if the subject does not interest you much will be learned.
I was motivated to do well in this class the entire the semestre. Lectures were always informative and helpful, not to mention entertaining! The essays may seem intimidating at first, but if you know how to write well (and comprehend reading material), then you're guaranteed to pass those easily. Final and quizzes not bad. Overall = GREAT!
I must say, Dr. Carrington, is an intellectual human being. He knows his stuff! He makes the quizzes hard, but if you read and do well on the essays then you'll receive an A. I learned so much from the class and I am fortunate to have taken it with him.
If you do all the reading you will get A on the quizzes and they are pretty easy. 2 essays paper not hard to write, 5 film extra credit which helps to bring up your grades. Finals are comprehensive, half are from the old quizzes and the other half are new stuffs. Dr. Carrington is very nice and very caring for his students. Dry sense of humor b
Dr. Carrington's class was great. It might take a while to get used to his style, but once you do, it is prob the most informative sex class you'll ever take. Brilliant, witty and sardonic. ALWAYS attend class, it gives you free points. Do the readings and extra credit. It's not hard to get good grades for the papers or the final. Be consistent.
Carrington is both interesting and informative. He covers a lot of material but as long as you do the reading and attend the lectures it is not hard to keep up. He gives a lot of opportunity to earn points. The papers are a lot of work and reading but not hard to pull off if you are organized and give yourself enough time.
Carrington's lecture were thought provoking and always very interesting. He does tend to cut students off in the middle of their questions but has fascinating responses and is a totally worthwhile teacher. Very important to keep up with the work, otherwise the final will really be a problem. other than that, great class, Id recommend him to anyone
There are two reviews essays, one final and five extra credit movie reviews. I adored the class, it was interesting and eye opening; I'd take another class of his in a moment. The only negative I'd give would be he told us he?d email were he not able to make it to class but no email came the 3+ times he was sick. Otherwise a really awesome teacher.
Very knowledgeable on the subject, always bringing new research to the class' attention. Great subject with good text choices and easy to use clicker system. Oh, and good fashion sense with the bow-tie ^_^
The best class I have taken at State. Dr. Carrington is brilliant. Every lecture is thought provoking. THIS is what a college class should be--something that teaches you to think critically. My highest recommendation for students that want to LEARN.
Dr. Carrington is extremely knowledgeable on the subject matter (and is really interesting and funny). I highly suggest taking this class!
One of the best teachers I have had at State. Very knowlegable about the subject and brings additional research on subject if student has question he can't answer. Be prepared to work hard. This class is by no means a breeze but definately worth taking. Never boring. 2 papers and Final comes from daily clicker questions mostly and lecture outline.
Dr. Carrington is one of my favorite teacher's at SFSU. He really knows what he is talking about and is such an amazing professor. He is extremely intelligent and although the 2 papers (5 pages each) are pretty difficult, it is such a great class. Dr. Carrington is everything a college professor should be.
Such an important class - glad I took it! Lectures are very though-provoking.. so is reading material. Attendance is really important and helps your grade (5 points a day) and so is daily reading (quizzes at least once a week).
Carrington's class is great. The material and reading is very interesting. The lectures are great as well. It was not as easy I thought it would be, as there is a lot of reading, but it is manageable. Make sure to go to class all the time and answer the quiz questions for credit.
I've noticed that students either love it or you hate it. I personally did not like it. The reading was boring among other things. He has you read a new article and takes a pop quiz almost every day, so attendance counts! His questions are wordy and sometimes hard to understand. but as a teacher, he's not that bad... Just keep up.
good class, fairly easy. you just have to go to every class, cuz he counts attendance, and gives quizzes on the readings.so those points add up alot in the end. lectures are ok, but i tend to doze off. as long as u attend class and follow material, its an easy A. theres also extra credit, based on videos
Dr. Carrington is a wonderful teacher. He is very knowledgeable on the subjects he teaches. It's important to go to every class meeting and keep up with the assigned readings. Taking this class was very rewarding for me.
Great instuctor and incredibly knowledgeable about this topic. PSY 450 is what i took and although it is hard work, i learned alot
Great class Carrington is a great professor with a great perspective on the material covered. Awnsers all questions and concerns proptly and throughly. Great class.
Professor Carrington is a great teacher. He is very knowledgeable and interested in what he teaches which makes the class interesting and fun. You will earn an A so long as you do the reading and attend class. I would highly recommend this class.
You need to go to class in order to pass! You must also do the readings in order to pass the midterm and final. The 5 page paper is also the most difficult 5 page paper you will ever do in your life. Do not think this is gonna be one of those cake classes, but I highly recommend taking this class! Expand your horizon
I thought the class was easy if you keep up with the readings and get a firm grasp on the material. There's daily quiz questions and attendance is a must! Professor Carrington was a great professor and I would recommend the class if you are willing to work a little for your grade. So glad I took such an informative and thought provoking class.
The problem I had with the quizzes was that sometimes, if we didn't have one for a few days, the next one would cover a lot of readings, so it was easy to forgot information that was in the older readings. The good thing about the quizzes was that you could discuss some of the questions with classmates.
His stories are so good!
Carrington is probably one of the best professors i've ever had. Funny, brilliant and very helpful to any questions or comments I or the class had. Make sure to read you will not do well if you don't but the texts are very interesting. also a lot of the material for the tests comes from notes. HIGHLY recommend the class! His bowties are rad!
Extremely helpful and interesting lectures
Dr. Carrington is one of the best professors I've ever had! He is very clear about what he wants from students. His lectures are very interesting. A lot of readings but they are manageble and extremely interesting. If you keep up with readings and go to the every session, you will do fine.
Incredible guy. As an HIV+ gay man, I was blown away by his lectures on the psych of being infected with HIV. I spent years in therapy and he mapped out my mind/life in two lectures. I had to control my feelings because I often wanted to cry/scream. I know the course is not about sex therapy, but damn, he rocked my world, and I feel renewed.

Dr. Carrington is one of the most passionate and interesting professors I have ever had. He is very fair to his students. Show up to class, read the material, listen to his lectures and you will do just fine.
Dr. Carrington is such a valuable professor at SFSU. I would not say this was an "easy" class but it was by far the most interesting + education class I have ever taken in my life. he gives lots of extra credit points & cares about students understanding material...so he's not all psycho about points like other teachers...best professor ever!
Hard class, but so worth it. The best moment: a kid asked him about non-verbal behavior and sex. He told us "bodies never lie" & launched into 30 minutes of how to read someone from forhead to toes, yep toes, both while picking someone up and during sex. The kids around me were either in shock or in stitches. He loves his students, take him!
Awesome class! Awesome professor! If you show up and pay attention, the quizzes are really easy. He is very passionate and incredibly knowledgeable in regards to the subject matter, I really recommend this class. Plus, he is really funny, and not hard to look at.
Great class...good material, he's a good lecturer.
Awesome professor, even when teaching a class of almost 800 students! Good lectures, interesting readings, just be sure to always be on time, keep up with the reading (there's a lot of it), and you'll do good.
a very passionate teacher with an extensive background. He loves the shock n' awe approach to teaching sexuality, but it keeps you interested. READ THE BOOK and DON"T BAIL ON FRIDAY CLASSES
This class was very helpful and gave me an understanding to why we have variation in animals as well as in humans. Some of the things I learned I knew already, but this teacher gave me a greater understanding of how and why people interact based on different areas of sex. This teacher seems hard, but I ended up doing very well. hint: go to class!:)
An extraordinary professor. His expertise and passion are unparalled. I fully recommend Dr. Carrington to anyone who is interested in human sexuality.
An amazing teacher, truly passionate and always kept the class interesting. Cracks jokes&keeps you interested in all sorts of things you would never think of before! Just make sure to go to class because attendance is a must and keep up with the readings because there is a lot of it ! LOVED THIS CLASS!
Carrington is amazing!! passionate, highly educated, helpful, and genuinely interested in student success and learning. Oh and he's funny in the sexy way a human sexuality professor should be!
Dr. Carrington is a very informative teacher, however his class was very difficult to get through. The reading is an intense load and the lectures normally didn't correspond to the reading. However interesting the class was, it wasn't my favorite. As a teacher he's awesome, as a class, not so great.
Carrington is a very passionate professor about education his students on variations in human sexuality. You get points everyday you show up to class and his ask quiz questions about the assigned reading. There is just one 5 page essay due at the end which is not that hard. Plus he gives out a lot of extra credit, so it's not hard get an A
He is informative. I didn't like how THE CLASS TOOK DAILY MAINTENANCE b/c the quiz questions are based on the readings from the night before - which can be long! The lectures are online & take notes on the quiz questions - it will help in the long-term. The essay was difficult for me to BS. To pass, NEVER FALL BEHIND & do the extra credit!
He gives quizzes via a clicker which is great for those of us who do the assigned reading! Points, points, points. It was a very interesting class, sometimes I felt that some of the movies were boring and a waste of time but overall I enjoyed the class. His tests are not that easy, so study! He assigns really informative readings, I learned a lot!
The class was really interesting.I enjoyed it.You have to read the readings to get full credit for the quizzes, other than that some of the questions are sort of general. Some of the quiz questions are up for discussion. The paper is hard to BS and he can get confusing with the directions for the paper. But if you need clarity see the TA or him, helpful
I would highly recommend Dr. C. Even though the class is an easy A, students walk away with a lot. You learn! A turning point clicker is required for the daily quizzes & final. He is approachable, interesting and helpful. Be sure to read all the assigned readings, be on time and you'll pass with an A! He rocks! :)
Hardest class I've ever taken. Quizzes are worth way too many points, and the clicker system is awful. Stresses everyone out and if you miss 5 questions on the 25 question midterm you're already down to a B-. Very stressful. He is passionate about his teachings, but the reading was incomprehensible.
Dr. Carrington is funny, articulate, informed with current info, and an all around great teacher! I have enjoyed his class SO much this year, and recommend it for anyone that isn't ignorant or lazy! Be prepared to read and study, though, it's not an easy A, but well worth it- the material is very interesting and sometime shocking! AMAZING!
read the assignments, go to class, take the quizzes and take lecture notes. Do these things and you cant go wrong. The reading is not difficult, and should take no more than 30 mins. per. assignment. Easy A. Those who cant follow the reading may want to reconsider attending university.
Dr. Carrington is one hunk of a chunk of a chocolate chip cookie. Can you say yumm? Not only is he an absolute genius on the subject matter and totally engaging, his passion comes through in an inordinate amount of ways. He is openly out, and for that matter I hope he swings both ways ;)
This class is a lot of work, but you learn. Dr. Carrington is passionate about helping students pass. 5 points each for attendance, quiz questions, and extra credit questions throughout the semester. Lots of reading, 10 pg paper, 2 midterms and a final. Grade goes by a point scale so don't go by your grade on ilearn. Clicker system for tests.
Go to class. 5 points every class for attendance. Random quiz questions throughout the semester. Make sure to write the quiz questions down because you might see them again. Lots of reading but if you do the reading, you will do fine. 10 page paper due at the end of semester. Lots of quiz questions and extra credit questions. Goes by point scale.
this class was super easy. just go to class everyday and attendence 5 points per day plus quiz questions. i didn't do any reading for the whole semester and just missed 2 classes. i got 920 points out of 1000 without doing the paper, easy A.
he's a great teacher. do not skip friday!!! do all the readings. he will quiz you in class. must buy device. do not slack off at all!!!
carrington is an EXCELLENT teacher. very insightful and actually really funny. Be warned there is ALOT of reading for this class so stay up to date on the article and text book assignments. other than that you'll really enjoy his class. passed it with an A :)
Studying hard pays off, his lectures are very helpful to understand the course. The class was a bit challenging, but he gives lots of extra credit opportunities. I liked how he walked around class instead of staying on stage the whole time, he's very considerate of his students. P.S. He bow ties are worth attending to class for!
One of the best professors I've ever had.
Attendance is a must, I cannot stress that enough. You get attendance points and answer questions based on the reading. The midterms and final are easy, he just repeats the daily questions. Do the reading and show up to class and you'll get an A. I got a B. Show up!
Great teacher! Helpful, straight-forward. Clear and concise explanations in the most raw form. Personable. Great book choices. Informative, educational, and interesting. Large but very effective class. His teaching style makes you very passionate about the topic.
If you've never used the iClicker or a classroom response system, it will take some getting used to. Every day there is a reading quiz for which you get instant feedback via iClicker. Midterm and final both via iClicker. Final paper of 8 pages. LOTS of reading but so worth it. Great teacher who keeps it real. Take this class!
Carrington is really incredible. He has a profoundly interesting background and is a really inspiring person. When I took variations, I actually got excited every morning before class because I knew I was going to learn something that was going to knock me on my ass. Awesome class, HIGHLY recommended, one of the best I've ever taken!
Of all the professors I had in both my undergrad and grad Sociology departments Dr. Carrington was the very best. I feel lucky to have learned so much from him during my undergraduate studies.
Absolutely stunning teacher. Extremely intelligent and passionate about what he teaches. Knows his stuff inside out. I didn't think it was the easiest class ever but I gained a lot of knowledge from his course. He also cracks jokes once in a while. Very awesome teacher and I highly recommend him to anyone!
Dr. Carrington is an incredible professor. He is passionate about the subject, well versed, ridiculously articulate...just an amazing orator. His class is a pleasure to attend. He will work you, though. Attendance is mandatory, readings are mandatory. Do the work, pay attention, and you wont be disappointed.
Really interesting and intelligent guy. The class was enjoyable as well as the readings (must do the readings since you get quizzed on them daily). Two midterms, daily quiz points, a final, and a 7 page paper. Very possible to get an A in the class.
Dr. Carrington is hands down the most amazing prof you will ever come in contact with. He keeps the students hanging on the edge of their seats. He knows everything and he is also hilarious. The class feels more like a comedy production than a class, if you don't take him - you ARE missing out.
I thought this class would be fairly easy compared to other SXS classes taken in the past but this class was SO hard. If you are looking for an easy time, do not take this class. Quiz questions daily, 2 midterms, term paper and a final. The material taught has nothing to do with modern sexuality-not a fun class.
This class was informative, entertaining, and a pleasure. No such thing as an easy A in this class; by all means you have to work for it! Looking back on it, it was worth the time an effort because it did pay off. Stay on top of your work & start the 7 pg paper early & not the day before it?s due like me :) Slackers: save yourself and don?t do it!
Dr. Carrington is a very interesting professor. Most of his quiz and exam questions are pretty straight forward. A very great person as well. 10+/10.
I love professor Carrington's style of teaching. All his questions are from the book. It is your duty to read it. Don't blame him if you did not read. There are no trick questions.
I really like Professor Carrington and his classes, he is clear, concise and a bit egocentrical but a great person. My one concern is his general lack of working with individual students, there are 600-700 students in just one of his classes so that lack of attention he can give to some students who struggle is concerning.
most interesting class I ever had. Really feel like I learn a lot. He open my mind to sexuality that I never thought about. Just wish he can reply to his email in more than a few words, it is understandable though since it is a 700 people class. funny guy
Lectures and reading material was extremely controversial and interesting. Quizzes and final were easy-- I came to class every meeting and read the book assigned.
Brillant teacher. Lots of great info. Intriguing topics. Attendance is not required but you will miss points from the daily quizzes. Exams are fairly easy IF you attend class and pay attention to the quiz questions, they will reappear on the midterm and final
Dr. Carrington is a fantastic professor. His lectures are well-informed and humorous. He has a firm grasp on his subject matter and is a mental magpie of information. If you go to most class meetings and keep up with the readings, it's almost impossible to get a low grade. His TAs are also a great resource for students
Honestly one of the most amazing profs I've ever had. Class is very challenging, and you MUST do all the reading and come to class every day to get an A. You can tell he really knows his stuff, and is great at explaining it. Class was never boring, especially with his interesting anecdotes and edgy comments he would throw in sometimes!
take him for any class
Carrington is brilliant. He covers many interesting topics thoroughly. His emphasis on empirical evidence is unparalleled. Just show up to class, answer iClicker questions, do the readings, do the 1 paper, and you're golden. Not a hard class if you put in the effort.
He is one of the coolest teachers I have had here at State & he is really funny and keeps the course interesting
Class was easy and interesting enough. I was really looking forward to it, but it turned out to have a lot more history than I would've liked. Rather learn about more modern sexuality and issues. Carrington - sometimes funny, but other times rather boring. Lectures were often dull. He takes long pauses between every sentence spoken. Very annoying.
Enjoyed the class. If you do the reading and show up you will get an A no problem. Awesome bow ties.
Loved the 50 minute classes, some textbook use but most of his class is common sense, he is opinionated but a good guy, i think though that his classes are way to large and would be better done if a lot smaller so that he could help more students without so many TA's. He relies way to much on them due to his busy schedule but good class.
Variations in Sexuality: There were 600 people in this class so I know that if he saw me on the street he would have no clue who I was but still a great class. Very interesting, a lot of reading and you really can't skip class but if you're on top of it then an A is easy. I think he did a great job putting this class together, I got a lot out of it
This class was frustrating to me. After exhaustive reading of the reader, however, most of these texts are academic treatise that can be reduced for class purpose into a few summary pages rather than wasting our time. Midterm and final paper on the same material more waste. Professor gives no guidance on what he considers important. so you guess.
Carrington is very approachable and opinionated professor. That being said, he is very open to debate + other points of view. But, course has over 500 students so you really have more contact with a TA. Content is eye-opening if you arent exposed to these things already. Whatever major you are, Carrington will certainly teach you some life lessons.
Amazing professor. Not an "easy A" kind of class but definitely interesting and enjoyable. First half of semester, didnt do the readings and I wasn't doing well on daily quiz questions, after the midterm I started doing the assigned reading and haven't gotten anything less than an A since then. Do your work, you'll get a good grade.
He is really full of himself, which gets old really fast. He does know a lot about the subject though. He doesn't really talk to his students outside of class unless it's "insightful conversation" about the material (not really if you're confused about it). Go to every class, read everything, maybe you'll get an A grade.
Lectures are very interesting. His quizzes require you to read but logic comes into play when doing quizzes. He's not an easy A but this class was one of the most mind boggling and intriguing classes I've had to date.
So many unnecessary readings that won't be even on the exam. This guy is easy because he gives WAY too much extra credit. At the end of the sem, the total possible pts was around 1170 but 100% is only 1000 pts. Also the 7 page essay is only worth 10% so you don't even have to do it and you can still get a good grade :-)
The readings are interesting and definitely open your eyes on relative topics, but the quiz questions are too detailed which basically requires you rememebr everything. The questions are rather tricky. Popup quizzes sometime. Be ready to get surprised.
The readings are simply to long, and the questions are to detailed. For getting a good grade, you need to remember everything to take either the quiz and mid, final tests. Readings (15 - 20 pages) plus, lectures, terms, videos. Be prepared.
For those students that take school serious & do their work, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS, most of the readying material is graduate level & daily test questions are tricky and are often given days after the reading assigned, the material is broad & test Q are very specific & tricky, readying material is expansive, he/AT provides no out-line or help
I am a honor student (GPA 3.95) and this class is beyond REASONABLE. No out line for exams, your expected to remember a vase variety of articles in detail, answer poorly written questions. This semester he has offered very little extra credit.
Dr.Carrington is a really great professor and an interesting lecturer. The readings are interesting and you are rewarded for doing them each class period. He gives the essay prompt well ahead of time He also has several TA's who have already taken the class to help you write the paper and answer questions. Don't listen to the lazy people!
Dr. Carrignton is the best professor I've had in my long college career. This class is fascinating and taught me more than I'd ever expect, not only about sexuality, but about history, religion, biology, and health. If you do not take this class you are missing out on an amazing opportunity. Show up and do the reading, and it's an easy A.
This class provides an enlightened perspective on sexuality, both the good and the bad, and how it develops through history. Although at times serious, Dr. Carrington is extremely passionate about SXS 400 and will really open up during the semester. If you want a well articulated, rational perspective on sex, with some humor included, take it!
His class, quoting his words "very challenging". And he means it. He will make you remember everything. The readings are average 20 pages for each class. He will also test you on his lecture, which he does not recommend on taking notes. He wants to make you understand. Stressful class. I assume the same to other class he teaches!
Excellent professor and fascinating class. Dr C is a great public speaker, and his lectures are interesting and easy to follow. To get a good grade, you have to go to class every day. The readings can be overwhelming, but at least skim or read the abstract, and use common sense when answering the quiz questions.
Dr. Carrington is a truly wonderful professor with a wealth of knowledge in the field of human sexuality. He approaches the subject from many different angles and encourages students to ask questions. He is very dedicated to the success of his students and does a great job of making himself available for help. I would highly recommend this course.
Dr. Carrington clearly knows the material and does a good job of making challenging material very accessible. SHOW UP TO CLASS, DO THE READING/STUDYING, and PAY ATTENTION and you should pass this class. This is NOT an easy course, it is difficult. But, Dr. C is a great public speaker, funny, helpful, and highly articulate.
I think this should be a required course. I learned more in this class than I have in my entire academic career. Class was always eye-opening, easy to relate to, and entertaining. He has an abundance of knowledge that I was eager to borrow from, which is why I always looked forward to the class. If you attend and pay attention you will do well.
Dr. Carrington has this class running like a well oiled machine; we were grouped together by last name (or DPRC) and feedback was instantaneous with iClickr. Dr. Carrington would reevaluate questions that may have been confusing to us and revise the score afterwards. The reading was plentiful but not difficult. Easy A if you read and show up.
Carrington has everything planned out so well. Your grouped based off your last name and given a TA incase you have any questions. The entire class is based on the iClicker so you have to attend every class in order to get quiz points and attendance. If you do the reading, print his lecture notes, and show up to class you'll pass no problem.
This is NOT an easy "A" class. If you want an "A," do the work. Midterms and finals have a lot of reused questions from the quizzes he gives you. The wording of the questions can be a bit confusing. Lots of reading to do. I still advise students to take this class. It is filled with very interesting information, and you learn a lot.
Favorite class this semester! I finished with an A and was lucky enough to be one of the top 10 in the class. Advice for an A: read and understand the material for the quizzes, GO TO CLASS, make flashcards for exams, take side notes on the notes provided, AND WRITE DOWN THE QUIZ QUESTIONS to help you study for the exams...I promise this will help!
This is one of the more difficult classes I have taken at state but it is also one of my favorites. Dr. C is up front about what he expects and organizes the class well. I prefer classes that are a bit challenging like his because they push me to learn. The readings are interesting and he is so incredibly knowledgeable that it is inspiring.
Great professor! Easy A, but work for it! Read materials thrown at you, write down the mini quiz Qs everyday bc it will be repeated on exams!, pay attention to lecture bc you will be quizzed right after, attending class (on time) is a MUST! He gave enough extra credit quiz Qs that I didn't have to do the major paper! Wish he taught more classes!
Attendance is important with this class, but if you miss a day, it could be made up with the extra credit questions. Don't have your phone out or the T.A will mark off points. Three 100 point quizzes and a 250 point final. The paper is the most difficult thing: 8 pages. Besides that, the class was fun and interesting.
definitely a dope professor that will make your eager to learn! He's extremely knowledgable and hilarious! Love him!
Amazing professor! Great lecturer, interesting material. Lots of reading and quizzes. Very helpful, will take the time to answer subject-based questions. Not bad for a mega-class.
Professor Carrington ROCKS! He is so thorough in his explanation of the content and leaves no leaf un-turned (or is it rock? I'm not sure. Womp.) You will not regret taking his class, its insightful and fun! Let's talk about sex!
Attending class is a must. Readings are a must. The lectures were crystal clear, and the tests were fairly easy, at least in my opinion. He's a cool professor. You'll do good in the class as long as you meet him halfway.
Great teacher. As long as you show up to class and bring your iclicker, you are bound to pass. Classes are interesting so it's easy to pay attention and keep up.
Reading the material prior to class is essential for doing well. Questions are asked from the reading on a daily basis, each question is taken electronically through the iClicker, & worth 5 pts each. The term paper is pretty tough, but if you do well throughout the semester, you can pretty much guarantee yourself an A wo many points on the essay.
AMAZING!YOU WONT REGRET TAKING THIS CLASS! i learned so much. more than i have in any other class. he makes you feel like the class is gonna be tough but its not. if you just go and listen, the three test are EXTREMELY straight forward. he doesn't trick you. exactly whats on the little one-question pop quizzes IS THE TEST. take this class.
Everyday, he has a couple clicker questions for you based on the readings. Make sure to jot them down because they will be on the midterm and final. Sometimes he has extra credit questions too, which will save your ass if you screw up a little here or there. The 8pg paper was daunting.
Carrington is by far the best professor I have had on campus. Lectures are interesting, factual and relevant to legal and cultural issues present in our society. I would take this course, or any course offered by Carrington, a thousand times over. Just make sure you stay on top of readings and pay attention during lecture and you'll be fine!
Class consists of well developed lectures & interesting films. Clicker questions are given every class and make up most of your grade, 2 exams and final taken via clicker (exams are pretty easy as long as you attend class), and one 7 page paper. I didn't do the readings but I still managed to get an A. Would definitely recommend this class.
This class was amazing!! Learned so much from dr carrington and was exposed to many interesting articles! Expect a quiz every class, which are really not too bad since they're based on the readings. The hardest part of this class was the 7 page paper, but write bit by bit everyday and you'll be fine!
Although the class is really big (and I'm not used to huge classes like this), Dr. Carrington's class is the most memorable. You will learn a lot in his class, but get ready to read a lot since the daily quizzes are based on the material. He's a great professor so take him if you can! :)
Words cannot describe how much I enjoyed this class. Dr. Carrington is an incredible man and has touched many lives. He radiates wisdom, tolerance, and kindness. I wish I went to his office hours and got to know him. This class takes work, but it's worth it because you actually LEARN about valuable life lessons. Do yourself a favor and take SXS400!
Dr. Carrington has all the hallmarks of a great professor. He is knowledgeable, passionate, and has a great sense of humor. You should not take his class if you are not prepared to do a lot of reading and don't plan to attend every session. If you do the reading and pay attention to lecture there is no reason you shouldn't receive high marks.
Must know the material and know it well, in order to pass the class. Don't miss class cause answers for questions are sometimes given in class or during lectures, plus there are clicker questions daily & 5pts for participation everyday. The 7 pg paper was the hardest part of this class, start early on it! Use studyroom to help you pass this class
Dr. Carrington's lectures were informational and he can sometimes be funny. The 7 page paper can be super stressful if you do not start on it early. He asks at least 1 quiz question per class on the readings or lectures, which are worth 5 points each. So make sure you stay on top of the readings! Wonderful class! :)
EVERY single exam is taken on iClickers and it is HORRIBLE! One minute to answer each question and you have to do it silently as a class. You can't go back to change your answers either. The end of the year paper is probably by far the hardest thing I've written and he's super tough on the requirements for it. You MUST show up to EVERY class!
Dr. Carrington is by far the most influential professor I have encountered during my college career. Although his class is challenging, it is never boring, it is thought provoking, and it is endlessly interesting for anyone from any school of thought. I highly reccomend any course by him, and his TA's are also very accessible and helpful.
I really respect Dr. Carrington. While I personally struggled a bit in the class (daily iClicker questions can be really tricky at times), I felt it was an enriching experience, and I would say not to let the challenge of the class deter you. Reading on some heavy, but interesting topics, iClicker tests, and 1 review paper pretty much.
As a SXS/LGBT minor, you are required to take this course. Lucky for you though it is an excellent course with a great professor. In this class we had weekly homework assignments that consisted of participating in a student forum, reading, watching a video(s), and taking a quiz. In addition to this, we wrote a 10-page paper.
He is a sweetheart, and furthermore is extremely intelligent. His lectures were super fascinating,to the point where I looked forward to attending his class. Just make sure you attend class becasue he takes roll with iclickers. There are 3 exams that are fairly easy if you've been keeping up with the reading and lectures. There is 1 paper.
Extremely short with students, frequently neglecting to answer questions. Hours of tedious youtube lectures every week. Very specific and narrow focus. Material of course very different from description of class in school catalog.
Dr. Carrington's class is challenging but if you put in the work you will get a lot out of it. I learned more about human sexuality & the different influencers throughout history which I found interesting. If you don't have a disciplined study strategy, do not take this class. You definitely have to study to do well in this class & it's worth it.
You will have to read the book and watch the videos in order to pass this class. The reading is interesting so are the videos. It will take a lot of time but everything is interesting. The quizzes are very hard even if you do the reading. I took this class as a shortened summer class and it was pretty hard but worth it.
One of the best teacher I have ever had. Professor Carrington is wonderful and truly cares for his students well being. The course is extremely interesting and informative. I took this as a hybrid course, where we would have lectures on campus Monday's and Fridays, and are required to take an online quiz on Wednesdays. Highly recommend!
Material is really hard. He makes the test questions super confusing no matter if you read the material, he still write the questions super tricky.
Won't answer any questions during the lecture. Uses iclickers for exam, and everyone must answer at the same time within a minute for each question. Despite the class falling under the Cultural, Ethnic, Racial and Sexual Diversity & Human Sexuality section for the Minor in Sexuality Studies, the class was mostly Euro-centric.
Dr. Carrington is passionate about teaching and it is reflected in the course lectures. While lectures may seem heavy, they are incredibly informational and intriguing. This class tackles some of the more controversial topics regarding sexuality and nature and I would recommend taking it of you are willing to put in the work and effort each week.
Professor Carrington's class is great and very engaging. Though the reading may seem a lot, you will learn a lot of great things in regards to human sexual variation. Even though the reading and attendance may seem like a lot, it does not feel like you are pressed to understand every minute detail of the lecture or reading.
If you really want to learn about sexuality, this professor will be the right guide. He is extremely passionate about his teaching and always provides the resources he gets the information from. Although the lectures might seem challenging, you will learn a lot from every lecture. He is very engaging and respectful when referring to controversy.
Boringest class ever. He doesn't allow you to use any technology in class, and used iclicker for everything including the exams. The powerpoint he uses is pretty pointless. His exams are very difficult, and his in class quiz questions are easy if you did the reading. The only good thing about this class was that we met twice a week instead of three
If you want to learn, do not take his class. You're paying to teach yourself. If you ask him a question he reminds you that he can not help you and makes you seem worthless if you do not pass an exam. When I asked for clarifications on the subject matter, he declined to help. Also does not let you know what you got wrong even if you ask.
I took Dr. Carrington's Variations in Human Sexuality class during my first semester at SF State and it definitely my favorite class by far. The material was interesting and engaging and Dr. Carrington made it easy to understand and connected it to current events and the bigger picture of human sexuality, which was greatly appreciated.
Dr. Carrington is a solid professor! He gives very clear instruction on his exams, review essay, and what is expected overall in the course. He has carefully written all of you lecture outlines so that you don't even have to take notes. If you do not show up, you will not pass. Interesting, smart man who cares about his students success. Take him!
Professor Carrington is truly knowledgable in his field of work. His lectures can be hard to follow sometimes but they are interesting and you learn a lot. Definitely show up to classes because you accumulate points by answering iclicker questions and he will drop you or give you an F if you miss more than 6 classes. Overall, I enjoyed his class!
Awesome Professor. Took me awhile to warm up to him and was overwhelmed by the reading load at first. But after awhile you really start to appreciate him and his lectures and get involved in the readings he assigns. Attend class because you get points from the quiz questions that were on past readings assignments. 2 mid terms, a paper and a final.
Given that SXS300 is an online class, it is to be expected to do readings and take quizzes which is the case for the class however, the material is more difficult than it needs to be. Carrington makes the quizzes especially difficult (get ready to be stumped even if you read & took notes) and hours wasted on other people lecture on YouTube.
Professor Carrington is an incredible professor! He is really passionate about the material which makes the class much more enjoyable. The class is difficult but if you work hard and do all the readings you will be fine. The knowledge you gain from this class is worth the hard work! He has done an amazing job keeping the course organized!
He isnt quite helpful. If you need to ask him something he wants it there ilearn. He grades too hard. He doesnt explain assignments clearly. He excepts so much but gives back very little.
The class title clearly states that it is a Sexuality Class. However, Carrington suddenly just drifts off-topic and teaches about the bible. And it happened in the middle of the semester. Why??? This is a Sexuality, not a Religious course. If the syllabus clearly states that religious material would be taught, I would have not taken the class.
Summer online class. Quizzes every week based off the book and documentaries. Questions were kind of hard. You gotta read the book, that's more important than the docs. A final paper based off of another book. Just a lot of reading for this class. If you can do that than this class is barbecue chicken.
This teacher sets you up for failure.
If you are a visual or discussion based learner, you wont get that here. You are not allowed to review quizzes and if you email him he will tell you to take better notes, or read better. Unbalanced power dynamic he does not guide me and he treat me like it my fault that I am not understanding his class. Some people cant learn only through readings
Assigns 4-6 long readings per week. Quiz reviews are not visible, if you message him about it with your citations to your answers wondering why your grade does not match up, he will accuse you of cheating. No lectures, if you ask him questions about the readings he will tell you to read it again or work harder, both which are not useful.
Assignments for the most part are straightforward. Carrington has taught online classes prior to COVID, yet fails to adapt the syllabus or expectations to the current pandemic anticipating conditions to be similar to previous teaching years. Feedback is direct and often callous and directs you to re-reading the handouts which are confusing.
I would ask Q's about the readings when it would be difficult for me to understand, he would tell me to re-read it or say it is not his job that I understand or not but it is my job & that I need to "work harder". When I ask about quiz grades with page #'s to where I find the answers (twice), he accused me of being a cheater & told me to delete it.
This is what college education is supposed to be! A lot of teachers have dumbed down their courses during COVID and I'm getting ripped off. I don't want to grade my peers papers and suffer through another zoom with chatterboxes. There is none of that in this course. The course is all about content. He responds quickly and thoroughly. Learned a lot
Super interesting course on family life. I learned so much about my own family that I never thought about much, like our family rituals and celebrations. Readings were challenging, quizzes intense, and the research talks were excellent. I got very detailed responses from him when I asked about topics, but he doesn't discuss quiz questions really.
PART 1 - Never taught a single thing (gave us readings and watch OTHER people's lectures). Sent emails three times throughout the semester. He will not let you review quizzes and exams. Youll never know what you got right and wrong. So no actual learning in the class. The final exam questions were 70% of those quizzes and exams, ironically.
GREAT class! I took this as a 3-week Winter InterSession, condensed timeline course. I simultaneously worked full-time, yet the clear syllabus deadlines & fast prof-response time to questions made it smoothly manageable. Assigned readings+videos interrelated, interesting, engaging & right-sized+decently paced. FASCINATING material & fair grading
After taking this class, I felt I didn't learn much because of his lack of teaching. Simply saying "do better" instead of giving students the help we need. I noticed a smug attitude whenever he replied to me. He is quick to judge without getting all the facts. I will be avoiding any future classes of his, and I would recommend you do the same.
3-week class: 1 quiz 4 days on 3 lectures and 3 chapters of the book + a final paper. That's all you're graded on. No option to review the quiz once you've taken it but if you ask him nicely, he'll tell you the types of questions you got wrong and how you can do better on the quiz. But don't ask too much bc I think he might get tired of it lol
He won't teach you anything himself and lacks humanity. He has that personality where he thinks he's better than you, as seen in previous reviews. Ask him for help on a test, and he'll accuse you of cheating. I wasn't the only one. To avoid any added stress, don't take any of his classes. He shouldn't be a teacher w/the way he treats his students.
He throws tantrums & says "you can hate me all you want" or "hate me now" when I ask why my quiz grade is low while providing citations to where I found my answers. Accused me of cheating & made me delete my citations. Has no control over his emotions. Does not teach, will tell you to work harder if you ask questions on reading. Terrible person.
I found this course particularly challenging, but also the most rewarded course I have taken at SFSU. I learned so much about family life that I had never really stopped to think about. You have to prepare each week by writing a summary paragraph and taking a quiz. The first couple of weeks, I thought I would fail, but I worked hard and got an A.
The course is social science heavy and requires a lot of work, but it was one of the best learning experiences. As a young queer kid, I learned so much about sexual orientation, so much about myself that I never had words to describe, but now I understand. The research on sexual orientation is fully covered in Carrington's course. Tough quizzes!
One of the worst teachers at SFSU. Ask him a question about HW and he will sarcastically reply "try harder". A professor is supposed to guide their student towards success, not berate them for not knowing the answer. And I can see too that I am not the only one complaining about this issue. Take another elective class if possible.
Professor Carrington is a tough professor. If you are a person that likes to communicate with professor's, this is not the class for you. I understand that it is important to learn reading/comprehension skills but it is hard to keep up with his course materials when you have a full time job and kids to take care of.
I took the class for the UD-D requirement but the professor runs the course like its a 600 level course. 2 chapters plus a quiz on the first week and every week after that. A 10 page term paper.. Extensive reading.. If you're looking for a basic UD-D course, this isn't the one.
Lazy course. He assigned about 2 books worth of reading and some videos from other people, but no teaching.Uses outdated texts to teach a rapidly changing field. After doing no teaching, he assigns a 10 PAGE ESSAY as the final very clearly for the sake of just making us do work, because nothing about the course warrants a paper that long.
Felt like a history class. No lectures, not even videos from the prof. All reading and youtube vids. 1 or 2 chpts to read each week plus an hour long video. Summaries on reading every wk. Quizes based on reading/vids. Few questions so missing 1 wrecks your score. 2 big assignments for the semester - research article summaries. Self-taught
Avoid this professor at all costs. The quizzes were difficult and were not based on the material and readings. So much writing too. Treats the class like an AP course. If possible pick another professor.
I found Professor Carrington's class to be quite enjoyable overall. Unfortunately, during the last two weeks of the term, I encountered a personal complication that hindered my ability to complete the 10-page term paper. As a result, I failed the class, despite putting forth my best effort. I would take this professor again.
Professor Carrington's class was challenging but rewarding. Lots of reading and writing, but engaging material. I found unstuckstudy ai helpful for study prep alongside the textbook. Overall, a worthwhile sociology course.
Self taught class with no guidance. Weekly readings and YouTube videos that are extremely out of date. Finishing my masters in soc and took this as an elective, what a joke. Focused on the biological causes of homosexuality and religious views. Not contemporary teachings and information comes across in a derogatory manner.
Read the syllabus, plan ahead & read/watch all the materials & you'll be fine. I didn't have a bad experience reaching out to the professor Carrington. He send weekly updates & links on how to improve your reading skills on the topic. I wasn't sure how I was gonna do it while taking care of two small children, but I did it and would do it again.
