He tries to act like he knows more than he does. The test cover a lot of information.
Christopher Chase is a definately a good teacher. His lectures are interesting but very complex. You really need to keep up with the book if you really want the most out of his lectures. The test are not hard just make sure to study and you will be fine.
This guy is the worst i've had in 4 years..he uses terms and expects everyone to know them right away. if you like sitting through terribly boring lectures, taking quizes and tests that are very detail oriented than this is your class...not an easy A or even C for that matter since half of our huge lecture was failing the class
Really hard
NOT an easy class, especially compared to a friend with a different professor. I struggled to pull off a B-, several people I know ended up lower. However, if World Religions are of interest to you he really knows his stuff and you could learn a lot.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS FROM PROFESSOR CHASE. very interesting topic, but very hard tests!! I would recommend taking it with a different teacher.
Professor Chase does a good job with this class. He knows what he is talking about and tells you during the lecture what will be on the test. As for the test being hard, that's a joke. It's 25 multiple choice and 25 true/false, these tests are about as easy as they come at any university.
This class has so much reading. He gives you too much information that is not on the test. The lectures are rather boring as well. Most people dropped this class. I think he made a huge curve on this class because so many people would have failed. This class was such a snooze.
Definitely one of the harder classes. He expects you to know way too much. Tests can be EXTREMELY confusing since they're either over 2 completely different religions or 2 religions that are very alike (both ways are easily confusing) Also, his lecture slides are just all over the place and hard to read. He definitely knows his stuff though!
he knows his stuff...almost too well, this class is HARD...if you're interested in this subject maybe just go sit in on plan on taking it pass fail unless you really wanna spend a LOT of time on this class
I signed up because I needed a fluff easy A; but it was way harder than I expected it to be. Lots of detailed, specific material covered pretty quickly. Break out your flashcards: the obscure vocab is an a*kicker. The quizzes are easy to fail; be ready with studying. If you're interested in the subject, go for it, but be prepped to work hard.
This class is SUPER hard. I failed every quiz except the one on Christianity. There is no extra credit and the class is sooo boring. There is no point in going to class because the slides are online, but the slides are so complicated anyways. Take it from a different professor!
Want a good grade? DON'T take Relig 205 with Chase. It's delusion if Chase thinks the hardness level of this low-200 level class is appropriate. It's not. It's obscure, foreign, impenetrable material, it covers a vast amount, and the multiple choice and true/false tests don't make it any easier. He offers almost no Xcredit to make up for it. AVOID.
Pleas save yourself now and switch to Northway! I did not take this advice and received my first c in my life!! He kind of tried to help when I went in for extra help...but still gave me 1 out of a lousy 2 points extra credit assignment. Boo---- Just do the smart thing and switch- although some of my friends did decent- i hated it
If you're hoping to get an Easy "A" don't take this class. It's pretty tough to get a good grade. With this said I rarely looked at the book.. not sure if that would have helped. The format of the class was sooooo boring. He even said during the first class that it was going to be a dread.
worst class ever. It is supposed to be an introductory religion class but material is very advanced. Attended every class and sat in first row and still did very poorly in the class. Quiz's and test's are fill in the blank and need to be spelled correctly or no credit. Most of the answers are words from different languages.
I thought the class was pretty easy. I started reading the book at the beginning but then realized that 95 percent of the information on the test deals with lecture information so I simply started scanning the book.
Very helpful teacher. Cares about students and likes to interact with them. African American studies is a pretty easy class. 4 tests and an analysis over a reading due each week
WONDERFUL professor. He is easy to understand, CHALLENGES you to actually learn, and is willing to go out of his way to help you understand. He doesn't try to baby you with easy tests, but these aren't easy concepts to understand. If you pay attention, study, and ask for help when you need it, you'll get the grade deserved, and learn a lot too.
I thought this would be a very interesting class, but I found myself falling asleep each day. Very difficult and don't expect an A without a lot of work.
Was a very intense class considering the fact that it was supposed to be an intro class. Had a tough time on his test and quiz and I even study.I have heard they are better professor who teach this course
He may not be the most interesting person or professor, but he definitely DOES know what he is talking about. I took an Intro to World Religions class with him that either put me to sleep, or made me extremely interested in the topic at hand. Didn't really use the text at all, just show up to lecture and the class will be extremely easy for you.
Prof. Chase was an amazing professor! He was super nice and really knows what he's talking about. He took the time to answer any questions and he was always willing to meet with anyone for questions after. We watched a lot of documentaries, which was nice. Although he says to read the texts, almost everything is covered in class. Easy tests.
Great professor. Read the book, pay attention in class, ask questions when you dont understand, get a relatively easy A. Dr. Chase is extremely understanding and intelligent, but strict when he needs to be.
Prof. Chase is very knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful. Study what he gives you in lectures and simply read the assigned readings and you'll do fine.
Very nice man however a terrible teacher! Very hard course for being an intro
Quizzes and tests in this class are extremely hard, even with studying. If you don't have any prior knowledge of world religions, I recommend taking this class with another professor. Chase is very challenging for an entry level course.
Took both intro religion courses with Dr. Chase. Sure there's a lot of difficult terminology but if you pay attention he'll give you extra tid-bits of information to help it sink in. Tests are easy and multiple choice (often 2 of the choices aren't even from the religion in question so if you actually read and study it's pretty easy) Overall great!
Very hard class for being an intro and very few options to get points. I would recommend finding a different professor. Not very easy to work with.
Professor Chase is a very nice man, he does use a lot of complex words in his lectures but he is generally easy to understand. There are 3 Tests and Quizzes which are non-cumulative, and tests are multiple choice while quizzes are fill in the blank. Fun class if interested
This class was difficult because I did not put much effort into it. There is no homework, but there are quizzes in class. If you do not listen intently and review the notes THIS CAN BE VERY DIFFICULT. I did not buy the book or go in for help, because I just took this to fulfill a requirement.
I wasn't looking forward to this as I took it to fill a mandatory requirement. But Dr. Chase is a great lecturer and actually makes religion interesting. He's more accessible during office hours than most profs and will work w/you outside of class too. Really a great experience with him.
Interesting prof. Clear and engaging speaker. Very helpful out of class. Essays not too difficult. BUT if you are taking this class thinking it will be like sunday school, or to reassure you your own religion is the right one, you are going to be disappointed.
Great professor- the concepts he teaches are pretty foreign to most people but he does a really good job at explaining them. This isn't a class you can skip! Each lecture is pretty dense but he emphasizes on the stuff he'll put on the exam. He's helpful when you have questions and he wants his students to do well as long as they put the effort in.
Your total grade is 3 quizzes and 3 exams. No study guide. No direct answers to your questions. A ton of information to study. I have As in all my classes besides this one. It's a D with only 1 quiz and 1 exam left. RIP my GPA.
If you are an engineer, I do not recommend that you take this class with Chase. I found myself spending all my time on classes related to my major rather than on a religion class. The class is out of 360 points based on three quizzes (60)+ 3 exams (300). If you mess up on one, getting an A in the class is very hard.
This class consists of three exams and three quizzes. If you mess up on one exam (like I did) you get screwed for the points and a total grade since there is not a lot of points. You will use your textbook and exams have questions on the readings.
Tests are easy if you go to lectures. Watch a lot of films in class so that gets boring. Whole grade is 3 tests and 3 quizzes but they're very broad. Not biased towards any religion.
Dr. Chase is friendly and great at teaching material and answering questions, but attendance and reading outside of lectures is a must if you want to come out of the class with a good grade. The final grade is based solely on 3 quizzes and 3 exams. Not an easy course, but very insightful and worth taking.
Fantastic professor! He is very in depth with the material, but takes plenty of time to explain it all. He adds a lot during lecture that aren't on the slides, so you need to be there to get the full picture.
Do readings and go to class!!!
Thought it would be a fun class, because it was a topic I was interested in. No homework, only 3 quizzes and 3 tests.
The only way to get an ideal grade on his exams is if you're apart of the actual religion. Readings and going to class helps a lot, but most of his questions are super in depth and not found in the readings or class notes. I found myself spending most of my time studying for this class rather than the classes that pertained to my major. Good luck.
Really loves what he does. I like how he doesn't spend more time on one religion than another. He really cares about teaching the students and uses voice inflection perfectly while lecturing.
I really enjoyed the class, but still fear failing because there are only a total of 6 grades: 3 quizzes and 3 exams. More opportunity for grades would have been great. There is an extra credit option but it involves watching a movie from the library (that only owns ONE COPY) and long story short... someone's not sharing. *eyeroll
Dr. Chase is very friendly and unbiased towards any religion. He seemed somewhat unorganized, and his powerpoint only included bullet points rather than explanations, and uses confusing words. There's a 7-10 paper about family history that sounds awful, but was actually interesting. Tests and quizzes are fine if you pay attention and skim the book.
Took notes in class and studied Professor Chase's lecture powerpoints for hours, and yet there is still a ton of information I'd never seen before on the test. He cares about his students, and loves questions but good luck on tests, they're impossible.
Dont take his class. On top of teaching various religious practices, this guy makes you learn all kinds of foreign words. When we studied sikhism and buddhism, he made us learn over 90 indian terms in about 3 weeks. Sad part is most of these terms have an exact english equivalent. He makes things a ton harder than they have to be.
I hope you enjoy learning foreign languages because you pretty much have to learn one to pass this class. Do not take this class especially if you want to focus on your major. Lots of unnecessary work here.
I found this class to be incredibly challenging and frustrating. Although Dr. Chase is very intelligent and cares about his students, there are only 6 quizzes/tests and they are very difficult. I attended class, read, and reviewed lectures and still struggled because much of the material on tests is confusing/not covered.
His presentations are awful to look at. I don't think I learned all the much about religion, more about the language than anything else. He also picks on the students who sit in the front. I learned more from looking up the religions studied on google than his class.
Instead of providing a textbook that explains what he teaches, he assigns an atlas, which is very confusing to follow, and a scripture book, which when read feels like a foreign language. Class is unnecessarily hard and the teacher cares but he picks on certain students and the material is extremely tough to understand. Don't take with this prof
I was scared to take this course because everyone told me how hard it was. If you do the readings you'll be fine. He's a very good teacher and will answer any questions you have. He tries to teach in many styles so all people who learn differently can understand.
Grading criteria was clear. Don't miss the lectures, participate and pay attention in class you'll probably come out with at least an "A". The tests weren't too hard as long as you study the slides and information on Bb. A frustrating part was the worksheets that are given during class, FIND a group and work together, my group had 7 people in it.
Chase is super intelligent and a great lecturer. What he won't tell you is that succeeding in his class often depends on rote memorization. You need to know terms and definitions, and you need to understand the fundamental concepts of every religion. Go to class and do your readings.
There's only 3 tests given during the semester and they are all ridiculously hard. I studied as well as I could have, but there were just too many terms and notes covered to memorize everything. I only had to take this course to meet a university requirement, and for it to be this difficult when it didn't matter for my major, it was frustrating.
DO NOT buy the "atlas of world religion", we NEVER used this. The main textbook is very necessary, however. I though he was a very good teacher, lecture heavy, vast understanding of the material, he knows literally any question you ask him. Class is very structured, but he will push things back and change dates if he needs to.
Chase is knowledgable, but he's not the best at teaching. He doesn't explain concepts very well and he's very unorganized when it comes to grading and posting homework. The tests were difficult to study for. I went to almost every class, took very detailed notes and studied for the tests, but I was always lost.
Dr. Chase is very respected by myself, but Rel 205 was quite challenging, despite having a tutor. We would go over information in lecture yet the information was very inconsistent with the tests. It's a very interesting class, but I would try to find a different professor if you want to take Rel 205
Chase knows his stuff and lectures were always interesting but the tests didn't match what we covered in lecture. Mid semester I lost being able to follow what he was talking about and our online reading quizzes seemed hugely irrelevant. Relig205 is an interesting class but I would suggest a different professor.
Can be energetic in class and will yell occasionally to get an extra point across. 3 pop/he warns you quizzes in class. Reading quizzes and Exams are in the testing center but he usually plans them to be with in the same few days so you've got two tests to take really. A few film assignments that are not hard to do.
Dr. Chase is very knowledgable and makes lectures interesting. However, if you don't attend lectures you will not get the grade you want. He gives out pop quizzes, but will also give you hints for questions on them and exams if you are in lecture. Overall, if you attend class and do the homework/assignments on time-this class can be super fun/easy!
While the online class wasn't awful, I didn't feel that I retained any information. Since the course is graded based solely off of four tests, there are no opportunities for extra points to help level your grade out if you screw up on one exam. To put things in perspective, I missed 6 questions in the entire class and that put me at a B+.
Extremely rude professor and not understanding. I heard he was respected and could be possibly a good professor to take. I was wrong, I regret signing up for his class.
Teacher was very clear whenever I had questions. The lectures were very interesting and the grade is based off of four tests. But honestly the tests weren't that hard. You can look up on quizlet all of the terms you need to know for the tests. They give you 50 minutes for the tests but they only took me 15 minutes. Study and you'll get a good grade
I do well in all my classes.. this one however is a different story. I would suggest taking the class with another prof. because it is a great class, just not with him. Interesting lectures and material, but non of it shows up on the tests. Quizzes are easy, but the tests have nothing to do with the material covered.
Chase is interesting and knowledgeable, but does not prepare you for tests whatsoever and makes finding the required readings a game of hide and seek. His tests dont reflect the points he emphasized in class and often are over seemingly unimportant things.
Dr. Chase loves what he does and is very knowledgeable and wants to expand his knowledge to his students. Often times though, he doesnt realize that a majority of his students know 0 background about different religions and so on. He explains big concepts but doesnt really explain them to where you can understand and learn.
Cares about students and subject, but when you're a FIN major looking for an easy A, he really makes you work too hard for an elective. It was very annoying when studying hard for something that I care about to then have to work even harder in this class so it wouldn't tank my GPA. There's no "free points". Every little thing is difficult. Dropped
Very knowledgeable guy. Not an easy elective that I was hoping for. The material itself is not difficult to comprehend, but he makes you work really hard for a good grade. I personally did not like that there were so few points in the gradebook and everything was weighted the same.
This class for an elective was extremely difficult for the credit. There was ALOT of reading for this class and alot of the times his lectures really weren't relevant or important. His slides were really hard to follow and he has 4 random pop quizzes that are very hard fill in the blanks. I wouldn't recommend taking this if you have the choice.
Really knew his stuff and taught pretty well. The only official homework was 30-minute videos we had to watch and answer questions on. There were multiple reading assignments a week, usually about 30 pages worth.
He is a caring guy and an expert in his field of study. But he gives you a crazy amount to read every week and will be quizzed on the reading every couple of weeks and will be on exams. On the weeks you don't have an exam or reading quiz you will be given film analysis assignments. Overall I would not take this course again because of the reading.
You will have to read A LOT for this class. Way to much to read. He's a really nice guy, he just expects a lot of work out of you.
The material itself shouldn't be as hard as he makes it. We had 4-5 assigned readings every week, and his exams were entirely concept based. Reading quizzes and film assignments took up quite a bit of time outside of class, all online quizzes and exams. Studying for this class was more difficult than it should have been for a 200 level course
Dr. Chase is extremely accepting of everyone and is very caring about how we do in his class. We had to do about 1.5 hours of reading for each week as well as occasional video assignments (which were easy and great grade boosters). Overall, a very knowledgeable and kind professor.
Great lectures. There is quite a bit of reading involved. While it is a lot, it is best to read the source material for the religions and topics talked about so you aren't lost. Plus, he talks about the readings in class. He's also very good at answering questions. The film assignments are a bit dry but the questions are to the point.
Don't take this class. Most disorganized religious studies professor at ISU. Will never take his classes again. He knows his stuff but over-explains everything. Prioritizes being a puppet for the university over his students. He'd rather look good to higher ups than organize a good class. Constantly changes due dates. DO NOT TAKE
This class with this professor is the WORST class I have taken at ISU and I'm a senior. This professor is SUPER unorganized and assigns every assignment week-by-week, including tests and papers. So we only have a weeks heads-up when we have a test or a paper. He cares more about his title than the success of his students. Do not take this class.
Took RELIG 210 from Chase. The class is very easy (if anyone says it's hard, they have poor study skills). Chase as a professor is knowledgable but unorganized and he appears to be lazy. He is continually late to create quizzes and exams that he says will be ready to take by a certain date and makes generic excuses to cover himself.
This professor was one of the worst I've taken at Iowa State. This guy changed the due date of the final on finals week messing up my schedule and making it even harder to study for. He puts quizzes and tests due on the same day thinking we don't have other stuff to do. Would not recommend 0/10
Dr. Chase is a bit of a mess but he's a nice and knowledgeable guy. Very passionate about the class. I had trouble grasping some of the ideas and his PowerPoints are not helpful to look back on. There are quite a few books he asks you to buy, but I would just get the main one if I were you. He's a pretty easy grader and an understanding person.
Professor Chase is a very knowledgable guy, but the class was unnecessarily hard. There is a TON of reading, and the quizzes are often very difficult. Tests I found easier. Studying is very hard because lectures tend to be all over the place and the slides do not help. A lot of time spent outside of class, difficult to grasp, would not take again.
Dude was so unorganized, it hurt.
Professor Chase provided a very welcoming environment in the classroom. He went above and beyond to answer questions, and I felt the assignments that were given were actually beneficial to my participation in the class. He answers questions thoroughly, and provides many opportunities for class discussion and engagement.
Professor Chase himself is extremely passionate about what he teaches and it can be felt in every lecture, this is in my opinion the most important factor in learning the material and he aced it. The secondary days where we discussed questions he posed to us led us to asking interesting questions and naturally digesting the material. 10/10
A lot of stuff taught in the lecture was on the exams so it's pretty important to go. Whenever someone would ask a question he wouldn't directly answer the question and would give a lengthy pointless explanation.
I took RELIG210 online, and the curriculum was very good. You can tell that Dr. Chase wants you to really learn the material and he uses diverse, interesting ways to learn it. He had 4 textbooks required for the class, which I thought was a bit much. (The Cataan one isn't really needed, I would definitely get the others though)
This class was honestly so unnecessarily hard. There is A LOT of reading and quizzes. The questions on the quizzes and tests are all over the place and pretty irrelevant. It is impossible to study for the tests because the "study guides" he gives are ALL of the topics covered in that unit written in a list.
He is a very good professor, in my opinion. There are many quizzes, but you can take them as many times as you want for an A. A lot of the exam questions are from the quizzes and lecture concepts, so take pictures of the quiz answers to study with. There are readings, but he only has you read sections of the book in class and then have a discussion
Took this as an easy 3 credits, was way more work than I wanted. Passback is annoying, a lot of quizzes that you can retake as much as you want. Quizlet will be your best friend, don't miss too many assignments like me, regardless of how much of a chore they are.
Easy professor as long as you pay attention and class and have half a brain.
Took RELIG 210 as an elective as I enjoyed RELIG 205 with a different professor. This professor required a lot of readings and videos you are assigned to watch weekly in order to complete the assignments, especially for a 200 level course. The number of readings and videos makes the workload seem very unapproachable and gives you burnout quickly.
If you have him change or drop right away
he does not care about people
The classes content needs to be tore down and rebuilt. One religion a week and exams focus on architecture, readings, and music. If your looking for a class that talks about politics of religion, scientology, great awakening, and interactions between cultures, drop him and add the other 210 professor. They are entirely different classes.
I liked the content of RELIG 210 but would steer away from Professor Chase. Tests include very random questions about specific topics that we either breezed over in class or didn't talk about at all. Study guide given is broad and unhelpful which makes studying for tests difficult. It's definitely not the best elective credit option.
Professor Chase is very understanding and clearly cares for his students. He has given me grace for multiple assignments when I didn't always need or deserve it. He was very understand when I was sick with covid and gave me extra time to work on assignments. The classroom environment was very welcoming and made discussions fun. Highly recommend.
RELIG210 has a heavy workload with lots of readings and quizzes. However, using tools like Quizlet and unstuck ai can make studying much easier. Overall, an okay elective if you're willing to put in the work.
He lectures you the whole class (so boring) expects you to read and watch videos for 20+ hours and then gives you an exam.
A ton of outside of class readings, and videos.
