I hate math. I went to his class every day just for its entertainment value.
Teaches material very well. Notes are very clear and help a lot when studying for tests. Tests are very tricky, and a lot harder than quizes and homework. Very good guy, and very clear with topics
He is awesome
funny
He is very good at teaching what he teaches and definitely knows his stuff. His notes are clear and help a lot when studying for tests. His tests are VERY difficult and are a LOT harder than quizzes and homeworks. All in all, a good teacher who's very funny. Study a lot though if you want an A!!!
A really nice professor. Clear teaching and fun class time.
Hard class, but great teacher. Study a lot and go to the SI sessions! Don't be afraid of Butler, he's a great guy who WANTS to help you!
Loved this class. Totally worth waking up at 8. Would recommend to anyone even vaguely interested in calculus.
AWESOME
Friendly, Funny, and really easy to understand. Definitely the coolest Calc teacher I've ever had.
Butler is a good professor. He is pretty clear, and if you pay attention in class, you will understand most of the concepts. SAYING THAT however, his tests are incredibly tricky. I consider myself a decent math student, and I have a mid-D in the class now. Hopefully the final will be easier or he will curve at the end!
One of the best 3 teachers I've ever had including HS & grade school. Never uses a microphone but is still very easy to understand. Makes jokes and keeps the class laughing which makes us stay interested. Quizzes once a week are pretty easy. Tests once a month are very tough but the quiz grades should balance them out. All in all, a great class!
Really good teacher, interesting lectures, and very personable and funny man. The material is somewhat difficult but with some studying it should be hard to get. The class if very independent and takes a lot of self-motivation.
He is very good at explaining the material. We have weekly quizzes and we have a test every month. The test is substantially harder than the quizzes, so that threw me off on the first test. Overall, he is a good and funny teacher with moderately hard assessments.
His teaching is good. He's very funny and he makes class somewhat interesting. We had a one problem quiz everyday which was either taken directly from the homework or a very similar problem. The tests are VERY hard. Unless you took calc already in HS, you're going to have some difficulty. Go to SI sessions the TAs are very helpful!
Chris is an awesome teacher. Keeps you intrigued with is jokes and loves to help people. The only downside is that if your a guy, there is no curve in grading.
Prof Butler's class was stale and felt like yet another rehashing of the exact same plan he has been using for 25 years. He was rude and condescending whenever I spoke with him. Even the jokes are less funny when you watch a tape of the class and realize they are delivered at the exact same moment year after year. An empty shell of a teacher.
He's a really good teacher, but his tests are rough. As long as you do the homework and do the past exams you'll be fine. Just remember, the final is super hard, so try to do good on at least one of the tests in the class because he doubles your best one!! But other than that hes a nice guy.
He's a great guy and a great teacher. However, he's sadistic when it comes to tests. Doing the homework doesn't help because the homework doesn't emulate him. I studied for 4 days and got a 59 on one test. For the final I just tried to emulate his way of thinking and got an 87. Don't try to understand this class, try to emulate Butler's methods.
Some people just aren't good at math, and is not the fault of Chris Butler. He gives out plenty of practice problems to learn the material and is extremely helpful in person. It is vital though that you learn how he does math problems because the tests will be that much easier. I did the problems the way he teaches you to do them, got an easy A.
THE SHIZZ-NIT
He teaches the material very well and he explains it in very clear and easy to understand ways. The only downside is most of your points come from the tests which are super hard and are nothing like the hw. If your a math major and you enjoy math, he will be your favorite professor. If you are not a big fan of math, you will hate this class.
If you go to class and go to the SI sessions and try it is hard not to get a B. The reason some people do bad is because they don't study or don't go to class. But he is really good at teaching and the class is fairly entertaining, so I highly recommend taking him.
You sink or swim based on your SI. If you make sure to attend lecture, do the MPODs, homework, and quiz reviews, it's not too bad. Don't get behind, though, because the class moves fast. Chris is a GREAT teacher, and really makes calculus enjoyable.
Very helpful in class, breaks everything down nicely and easily for the students. Extremely helpful with office hours, and always pics good SIs.
Gives VERY poor explanations, I barely understood anything!
Great Class
He tries to be funny but he only makes the case nerds laugh
Compare to other math teachers he is a god-send. You have no idea how much you appreciate Chris Butler until he's not your teacher anymore.
Math has never been my favorite subject, but after two semesters (121,122), I found that I had a solid grasp on the information he taught us. By far one of the most enthusiastic teachers I have had at Case. I strongly recommend taking Calc 3 during the summer if you're willing as the alternative has left me wishing that I had done so.
Great teacher, makes class intersting. Can hold attention well and generaly nice guy. Tests are bad because you lose points for no real reason, or if you solve problems in ways he does not approve of. Other then the tests the class is easy, free homework points and extra credit.
Chris is an amazing professor. I have already taken this class in high school and Chris presents the material very nicely. Some people who haven't had any Calc might have a little problem but going to SI sessions is a good choice. He even goes to the supplemental sessions which so far no other professor has gone to one of their own.
He has a way of conjuring numbers and not explaining where they came from. Tests are usually a step above anything you do in class/for homework, and there's never enough time. Though you may not want to, DO THE OPTIONAL HOMEWORK PROBLEMS! I wish I had along.
good guy
Chris is a great guy! He has such a fun personality and really puts in an effort so the students can understand the material. Sometimes he does simple algebra quickly and so it looks really complicated, but once broken down its not bad. He offers many different ways for you to study and get help and cares about your success and understanding.
Excellent lecturer, manages to make waking up early for math class as bearable as possible. However, his tests are WAY too difficult. The review material and homework are not enough to prepare you for the questions he gives, and he often gives snarky/dismissive replies when you ask for help.
Had I worked a bit harder during the semester, I could have pulled off the A instead of the B+. He's entertaining, relatable, and creates a good atmosphere. Only complaint is his exams will test your algebra more than your calc, with tricky minor details costing you major points. That put aside, a great first semester professor.
Very Good Math Instructor
Excellent professor who makes coming to class well worth it. He explains things very clearly, and makes sure the TA/SI system pans out fairly for everyone. My only complaint is that his tests are often very (and arguably unnecessarily) difficult. They often test your algebra more than the calculus you've learned in class, which is somewhat unfair.
I had Butler for MATH121 and 122, and I love him! He's class is really fun and he's really nice! Sometimes the exams will be a little bit hard, but if you do the review sheets and EPODs, you will be fine.
Excellent professor~
Great Professor. Very clear.
Good, interesting lecturer. Plenty of help was available from a variety of sources. Difficult tests, but very clear about what would be covered.
He's a really great prof and makes sure to not waste your time while you're in class. His tests are unnecessarily difficult though compared to the homework and quizzes. You need to know exactly what you're doing in order to get an A.
very good teacher
Good Professor
Explains everything very clearly during class. Homework and quizzes aren't too bad but his tests are impossible. Its very difficult to do well when even the SI's can't explain some of the problems he puts on them. Grading isn't very fair either, as there is no partial credit given.
Very good professor. Relays the material well to students and explains everything very well. His quizzes are very easy, but his tests are often long and hard to finish in addition to being very difficult.
Chris is a great guy who knows math like the back of his hand. Examples in class were crystal clear, he explained any questions students had very well, and was overall a very good teacher. His quizzes are very easy, but tests are extremely difficult. Expect to spend 8+ hours studying for an A/B.
He is very good at teaching and knows calculus unbelievably well. However, he skips many steps to save time so make sure you can follow along. If you want to do well in his class, you need to do many of his practice problems. His tests are very difficult because many problems require algebra to simplify before you even get to the calculus portion.
Chillest professor I've had at Case so far. It's worth getting up early for his quirky humor. Definitely go to his lectures. His teaching makes math easy to understand. Many times, I didn't even need to use the text. Exams are very reasonable, but you might be in a time crunch. Also, consider getting him for recs.
Most annoying professor ever. Avoid him.
My favorite professor! You do not even need the textbook because he would explain everything clearly in class. Exams are not very easy but the previous exams are helpful.
Fun and nice guy. Too bad he over-simplifies a lot of the materials, which made it extremely difficult for people like me who did not have any calculus experience coming out of high school. Exams have a lot of twists to them and are almost nothing like the homework and the reviews.
One of my favorite professors at Case. I enjoy his lectures and he is easy to follow. He provides great practice problems. Very approachable. If you go to him for help he'll clear up everything for you. Be warned his class is not easy. Study for his quizzes and even more for his tests.
One of the best professors at Case. However, he is stuck with the obligation of making all the Engineers switch to business by the time they finish with him. His quizzes and tests will make you squeal, regardless of how much you study. The final tends to be easier because you get more time.
Quizzes require rote memorization of the homework, and have annoyingly short time limits. Tests are more reasonable. Class can move very slowly for the time commitment involved. Lessons, however are very clear and direct, and there are no surprises.
Chris is just unprofessional sometimes. While he knows calculus, he also knows what its like to be biased and closed minded. Unfortunately, he's your only option if you have to take Math 122 or 121. I would say, don't take this class unless you have to.
Wonderful teacher. Fun and knows his subject very well. Tests are very difficult, but if you know the material, you'll be fine. If you put the work into it, you'll do well in his class. Best math teacher I've ever had.
Chris is awesome! Makes a 400 person math class interesting. Very approachable and personable. SIs are super helpful too. Book isn't really needed, you can get by on just doing the MPODs (Math Problems Of the Day) instead.
Hands down best professor at Case. Take him for as many math classes as you can. Make sure to do M-Pods because if you can do those, you will do much better on his tests. He is a very fair professor. Don't skip class
Chris is fantastic. He goes out of his way to help students. Don't be afraid to go to his office hours, or study in the SI office next door. Chris genuinely wants you to succeed, and his lectures are enjoyable and informative. If you do the MPOD worksheets, you don't need the textbook at all.
Perfect freshman professor- really knows his stuff, but is also one of the most entertaining professors I've ever had. Going to his class was always enjoyable, and anything I didn't understand/grade I didn't agree with I felt like I could talk to him about.
Best professor I have ever had! I hated math before I took his class, but now I love it. The material can be difficult, but do the MPODs and you will do well on the exams. He is always willing to help, and there are plenty of resources (especially the SIs) for getting help in his class.
Best professor I've had so far! Super funny, actually makes the subject and going to class enjoyable. Really makes sure you understand the subject if you ask him for help!
He's an entertaining teacher sometimes, but I don't get his humor. I thought that the recitation classes helped a lot. Definitely do MPODs (Math Problems Of the Day), the book work is just extra practice.
Chris explains things really clearly, and is a fair grader. He tries to make the class interesting. Make sure to do the MPODs as they are very helpful. SI sessions are also a really great tool.
Very easy to learn from. He speaks in layman's terms. It is very hard to get a bad grade with the lectures that he does and all the SI sessions that are available. I HIGHLY recommend him, he is my favorite teacher here at Case so far.
Chris lives up to his promise to make math easy and fun. Entertaining in lecture. As long as you do the homework, the MPODS, and attend lecture (no Mediavision here), you will get the material, and likely a good grade in the class.
Chris is a very good professor to have during your first semester at CWRU. As long as you attend lecture and do the MPODs, you should do just fine. Tests can be tricky, though. As long as you follow Chris' morning routine of doing 10 push-ups, 10 algebra problems, and eating 10 pancakes, everything will be just fine.
overall very good
Chris is a good professor, even great! However, as a person, he is rude, insensitive, selective, and condescending...oh and touchy. Just be open minded and accept that that's just the way he is. And he thinks he's funny, but it gets old after a week.
Overall good teacher. Seems like a nice guy. The class was tough, but getting an "A" is definitely possible with some work. He provides you with all of the problems and resources you need to get an "A" so overall a good teacher.
Definitely works hard to give students what they need to do well in his class. Encourages seeking outside help with supplemental worksheets that he makes for each topic. His exams can be rough and some questions might be unexpected or more challenging than you would expect, so ample preparation is highly encouraged.
Chill, pretty good at teaching calc. Very approachable if you ever need help. Lists practice problems from the book, but doesn't check them (instead has short quizzes to make sure you're keeping up). Doesn't require attendance, but doesn't record his lectures, so it's in your best interest not to miss them. His voice sounds kind of like Tom Hanks.
The professor is good at teaching and amusing students. Lovely professor
Chris is a great teacher. He is very helpful and funny in class.
Chris is great, his lecture is very clear and he never tricks you in the test. If you attend the class and do the homework, it is easy to get an A. Actually, this is one of the few classes I never doubt I will not get an A.
Go to class and take good notes. Do the MPODS and test reviews and always go to him for help. He drills the information into you to the point that you are fluent, but his tests test your ability to really use what you know. Not hard if you stay focused. Otherwise best teacher I have had so far!
Each lecture is a theatre production; you'll never be bored. But, if you are bored, Chris will let you know ahead of time. It's very easy to understand his lectures, and his class has been one of my favorite so far. There are multiple opportunities to ask him for help weekly, and he is always willing. A great person and a great professor.
Chris is a great math lecturer and he makes going to class relatively fun, even at 8:30 in the morning. You will learn a lot. He will occasionally throw in twists and tricks on quizzes and tests.
Best math professor ever. Do all the daily homeworks and MPOD, and the practice exams. You'll survive and shine.
He makes his class easy and aims for you to understand how to do the problems. I didn't like that he taught shortcuts and ways to do things rather than explaining the reasoning behind it.
Chris Butler was a fabulous teacher. He has clear handwriting and explains things well.
Chris is a very fair professor. Sometimes difficult to approach directly though, but your SI should be helpful regardless. DEFINITELY take the time to study for tests and DEFINITELY memorize things (even the formulas he says he'll give to you on the exam since it will help you move quicker). Fairly long exams, but a reasonable final.
Nice guy, Teaches very well. Go to the class, end up easily getting an A
Chris is hands down one of the best math instructors I've ever had. His lectures are entertaining, and there's a lot of resources available if you need help and aren't very good at math (like me). That being said, the exams are pretty tough, even if you've been studying, but they never feel unfair. Chris prepares you, and it's your job to work.
Chris is the best! One of the best Professor that we have at Case!
Butler is love Butler is life His MPOD's are really helpful and review sheets are the test if you complete them. Go to the SI sessions (they are really nice and helpful). (There is also free candy)
Do MPODS and HW. Practice, practice, practice since tests are not easy. Grade is based off of quizzes, 3 tests, and final.
Last semester I got horribly sick and Chris was great at helping me and was very understanding. Overall is an amazing guy. Tests are tough, but he provides a crazy amount of help. He is fair and easy to talk to. Also any prof who is willing to bail you out of jail is a pretty good guy
Bets math professor I ever had. Wish all the math class are taught by him. Very clear during the lecture with good examples that covers the material. Do the moods and you will be fine for the quizzes. Have practice problems and past exam (with detailed solutions) for you to work with before exams. Exams questions can be tricky.
Chris Butler is awesome. He's a wonderful teacher because he makes calculus as fun as he possibly can. He's also very helpful in office hours and gives you many resources to prepare for exams such as previous years' tests and practice worksheets. My advice is to do the homework since most of his in class quizzes are based on the hw problems.
Great#1
Only 7 questions per test so make sure u know the material
Great Teacher! Funny and makes calculus fun. Highly enjoyed his class.
A great guy - funny, yet also good at speaking and teaching the concepts. Unfortunately, his class is skewed against bad test takers - the grade is 100% exams and in-class quizzes. Make sure you do the (optional) homework, and call his 1-800 number if you need extra help.
He's just great!
Absolutely fantastic! Sit in front, make friends with him, maybe he'll make you part of one of his demonstrations. Very funny, and very good at explaining what he teaches.
Although the class was tough for me at times, Chris does his best to help you. He genuinely wants you to succeed and wants to be your friend. I thoroughly enjoyed the class, and I thank him for all he has done for me.
This guy is an absolute legend. Everything that comes out of his mouth makes sense, even if it's a joke about his mother in law. I just get it.
impatient when i ask for help.
He is my favorite professor of my semester by far. His class is not easy, but if you enjoy math and studying then you will be successful.
Butler is one of the best instructors/professors at Case. He is very clear in his lectures, offers help via office hours, personal cell, nearly around the clock SI sessions during the day, and review sessions which he personally attends. The reason I didnt get the grade I would have liked is not his fault at all, but rather my lack of studying.
Chris is an enthusiastic professor who teaches tough courses. He adds spirit to what is usually one of the most monotonous subjects. If you put in the effort Chris provides you with ample opportunities to succeed through quiz reviews, practice problems, test reviews, practice tests, and amazing SI sessions. He's not easy, but spirited and prepared.
His tests can be challenging, but doing the homework and test reviews prepares you very well. Daily quizzes are a pain in the ass but force you to keep up with the material. Generally a straightforward class. As for Chris, he's overall just a great guy and teaches clearly. I wish everyone were like him.
The first day of class Chris makes it clear that he is you friend. He is truly an awesome professor at case. For someone who is a little mathematically challenged the class can be difficult. I personally struggled with his 3 tests. Daily quizzes are a bit of a pain in the ass.
His lectures gave clear examples of problems that would be on the homework. He made class enjoyable, which is very hard to do at 8:30 am. He always returned quizzes and tests in a prompt fashion, so you got instant feedback. He gives ample opportunity to receive extra credit. And the best part is he doesn't give unnecessary information.
Rather than sweat over book work, I preferred reviewing what was introduced in lecture & looking up videos on YouTube for what I didn't understand (IF I couldn't make it to OFFICE HOURS or SMALL SI SESSIONS). Seek out practice problems, do the MPODs & test reviews. Write down ALL examples in class. Exams-tough & long. Final-much more time, USE IT
Hilarious professor, great class, but relatively hard to pull off an A.
This class is a very easy A if you put a little bit of effort in. The textbook is not really useful at all, just pick up the MPODS after class each day. If you do the quiz & test reviews, you will be fine & should do well. Chris is a great guy who is always willing to help his students. He talks to you before class, and offers lots of extra credit
DO THE MPODS! and GO TO CLASS! Don't worry about the homework, pay attention to the mpods, and the practice problems in class, that's where he gets the test questions from. SIs are really helpful. Quizzes everyday are a pain, but a nice grade boost if you do well.
Probably the best professor I have had so far. He has a really interesting and great teaching style. Everything he teaches is clear and entertaining. He's also a really cool person in general. The class itself is a bit hard, but if you jut practice the suggested homework problems you'll be fine.
good, but tough professor.
Worst professor I've ever had. Class is extremely hard and he does nothing to help you if you are in need. He is condescending if you ask for help or advice about passing his class. Does not curve anything, even though you need it. Only cares about how funny his students think he is, not about how well his students are learning the material.
Show up, follow along, and do the short homework assignments and reviews and you should do well. The material is hard but he makes things easy - one or two concepts a day. Weekly quizzes, which I find really reinforce the materials. All his tests are the exact same format, and he takes a lot of questions from homework/reviews/etc.
Not too hard, especially if you've taken a similar math before (AP BC calc)
Not too bad, but do the MPODS
one topic a day, very clear in what you need to know.. definitely study the practice exams he puts online before the exam because the exams can be hard
Chris is very funny and pretty clear in his explanations and is really willing to go the extra length to help you succeed in his class- that being said his tests are very very very difficult. He has daily/weekly quizzes (depending on the class 121/122) too that can be difficult. Study lots and use his resources, he gives a lot of practice problems!
If you don't keep up with the (optional) homework, the tests will destroy you.
hes a great guy
He was a great professor but I'm not a fan of his teaching style. He teaches solely through example problems. I prefer to learn through more general terms but he does genuinely care about his students. The downside was the daily quizzes. I've never seen this material before (unlike most students) and being tested the day after learning it sucked.
He's a friendly guy, and always makes lots of jokes in class. He offers a ton of EC opportunities, and is a decent enough teacher. What you don't learn in lecture you can easily read about the next day in class, and because it's math 121 the material is relatively simple anyway
Good guy who most students like. Each exam gets harder as the class progresses.
Chris is a cool guy. There are quizzes every day but if you know what you're doing they're not too bad. He is very easy to talk to and actually makes calc fun.
Didn't show up for most classes, but on the days I did, I didn't regret it. MATH122 has weekly quizzes which are pretty simple as long as you do the MPODS. Once you hit series, show up to class, because you will get pounded by Chris real hard by this topic. Exams are easy, just do previous exams and an A on the exams will be guaranteed(ExceptExam3)
He is almost always available to help you with the hw, and the MPODS he makes really prepare you for the tests
Chris is the best math teacher ever. He makes Math 121 so much fun, his class is a must take. Super chill, hilarious and all in all extremely fun and great guy! Total rockstar. Do the MPODs everyday (not the homework) and you'll be fine for the daily quizzes. For all 4 exams, do the previous years exams + look over the MPODs. An A is guaranteed.
Going to lecture is going to make or break you. He is pretty clear on what you will have to know between the MPODS and Quiz Reviews. He can make tests harder if he wants, but if you know the material you can reason through it. Overall, great professor and super entertaining.
He's alright, a bit intimidating outside of class. Pay attention during lectures, because he does lots of examples and writes up exactly what you should remember for the exam (besides, you have to go for quizzes anyway). If you need extra help/practice, do the optional homework or email an SI, rather than going to office hours.
Chris Butler's 121 class is very funny, and easy to digest. The class is an easy A (it is a 100s level course). There is a 4 point quiz every day (grade boosters); the exams are the same format every year and he has all the previous exams online; a lot of office hours; and extra credit. The only way to not get A is to not care about the class.
I had already learned the material and my credit didn't transfer from high school. I personally found it difficult to relearn the information with a different teacher because I was taught different methods that caused point deductions on my exams in Prof. Butler's class. I feel as if I knew the material, but my occasional tardiness ruined my grade.
Do the homework and GO TO CLASS. Literally the most important part of this class because there are quizzes everyday. But overall if you try and work for it, you can't fail. Also he is charismatic and a good lecturer.
Chris Butler was made to be a teacher. He explains the material so well, uses relatable examples, and really wants us to learn the material. Beware of skipping class because those daily quizzes can bite you in the butt or save your grade. I'm taking the next 2 levels of math with him because he's so great.
Chris is great. He's funny, his examples are excellent, and he's engaging and does his best to be approachable and kind. During his office hours, however, he's almost a completely different person. He's incredibly condescending, slightly rude, and doesn't seem at all invested in your success as an individual. Despite this, I'd still recommend.
Dry, sarcastic, and hilarious lectures. 122 is pretty difficult compared to 121, but he gives a ton of study materials for exams; about 7-8 past exams per unit. Go to lecture, do his MPODS, and show up for quizzes and you'll set yourself well for at least a B
do the MPODS and if you don't understand anything, ask the SIs. that's all I have to say about this class, because that's all you need. easy A.
Dr. Butler makes math fun! Very personable and his exams are fair! If you do the homework and listen in class then the class won't be extremely difficult and you will learn a lot!
Took Calculus I,II, and III with him. He makes jokes a lot in class and most importantly he makes Calculus seems so easy. Would definitely recommend him!
Chris is my life. He is so funny and is an amazing teacher!
Best professor.
Chris really knows that calc can be somewhat monotonous and non-emotional, and he does a great job of throwing in anecdotes and stories to spice it up. The material is clearly laid out and there are never surprises on quizzes and exams. Overall, just a really funny guy and very accommodating.
The lectures are pretty much just practice problems, and the tests are the exact same kind of problems. And the homework is the exact same kind of problems too. If you go to class and do the homework, you'll be able to get an A.
He's a great guy who tries hard to make lecture enjoyable and fun. It is easy to get average or above average on tests if you attend lecture and not even study much. The SI's are also very helpful outside of class for extra help. I would highly recommend taking Chris's class.
Chris butler the best prof everrrrrr !!!!!!!
Chris has a reputation as a funny lecturer, and he definitely deserves it. The lectures for both Math 121 and Math 122 have been pretty good, and he does explain most topics well. His review sessions, though, are beyond useless. Often skips through problems with little to no explanation of techniques that are not simple.
For math lectures, his class is entertaining. The SI's are extremely helpful and accessible. Don't do the textbook problems. As long as you can do the MPOD's you will be fine. There are very few curveballs on tests and he posts tons of previous exams so the questions are pretty clear. I am a B student in math, so if I can do it you can.
Chris Butler is absolutely phenomenal. I hated math before I took Calc 1 and 2 with him. Lectures are very entertaining, and the SIs can help you understand any material you are struggling with.
Chris is very funny and very knowledgeable about calculus. He's a great professor, but moves very fast. Your entire grade depends on tests and quizzes, which is understandable. Work at your own pace and don't fall behind and you'll be okay.
Great professor, easy class if you do the worksheet and take notes in lecture. Tests very predictable, he gives you plenty of past tests to practice. Funny teacher, pretty creative and three cheers for donut day.
Chris is available in his office nearly every day for students that need help. He keeps the lectures interesting by cracking jokes and getting the class involved. Overall, still a difficult topic but Chris made the class much better.
Chris is a great professor who really cares and really knows how to teach the material. You can't go wrong with him.
No mediavision. Tuesday quizzes. Has practice quizzes online and practice test with solutions online as well. Assigns homework from textbook but is not graded. Tests are not curved. Up to 1% extra credit provided for going to school activities.
Professor Butler really cares about his students and Calculus. He is an excellent professor, but this is a difficult class. The tests especially are very fast paced, and there are no homework points to balance them. You will want to use the SI hours and do all of your MPODS, as well as time yourself to study. Difficult but rewarding course.
Absolutely awesome professor. Class was at 8:30 but it's definitely worth getting up for. Gives really good examples during lecture and you always know what to expect from tests because he puts all his past tests on his website. Do your MPODs and go to class and you should be fine. Really tries to make his lectures interesting and humorous too!
He is very nice. His hand writing is excellent. He gives all the past papers and keys before exams which is extremely useful. Its really worthy and proud to be his student.
while attendance isn't mandatory, he doesn't have media vision so you have to go to class to get notes. He's well respected, interesting, and easily accessible outside of class. You get the feeling that he really cares about his students. He provides answer keys to past exams and gives extensive review problems. Overall a good time. daily quizzes.
Great prof.
He can seem like a funny and charming professor at first but soon enough through the course you'd realize that his jokes get old, boring and fail to hide his shortcomings as an introductory math professor. He will teach you how to solve test type questions and you can get an A but tries to avoid having to explain how the math theory actually works.
He was pretty good overall. I liked him better for 122 than 121, 121 had daily quizzes which i wasn't a fan of. However 122 had weekly quizzes which were usually pretty easy. His tests aren't easy but they aren't too hard, he gives a lot of review material for them on his website. He also gives extra credit and curves at the end by around 1%.
I had Prof. Butler some time ago. He had some valuable lessons, but for some reason I felt like I was on his bad side. He'd be friendly and laugh with other students, but took on a more intimidating persona with me. I feel like I could have learned more from him had that not been the case. I guess you can't gel with everyone.
Good professor with good explanations of material. He's a funny guy and pretty helpful. Definitely do the MPODS.
daily quizzes are easy but they are at the start of class so you can't be late
Chris is very funny and makes his lectures easy to understand. There are daily quizzes in the beginning of the class so you can't be late. There are easy extra credit opportunities which is just to go to events around campus(not particularly math-related). He has MPODs that are very useful. If you do the MPODs you really don't need to do the HW.
Chris Butler gets straight to the point and his tests and quizzes are taken from the notes (usually). I would suggest doing the HW which are the MPODS and use the book for extra problems or clarification, but the book is not necessary. Lots of extra credit opportunities, take advantage of that and try getting those points early in the semester.
I loved him as a person but hated his tests. I feel they don't really represent how well you know the material. I've always did well in math until his class.
Chris was one of the best professors I've had at Case. He always explained with simple examples to understand easier. There was homework from textbook, but it was optional. DO MPODS!!! Those were really useful!! Quizzes were not bad, and tests were fair enough. Do extra credits if you want. Highly recommend and love him a lot!!!
Butler is an amazing teacher, he does so many examples in class and the HW isn't too bad. Sometimes the quizzes were a bit tricky, but if you do the MPODs and ask for help outside of class if you're struggling, it's not too bad. Calculus II is a very hard subject to learn in college, but Butler does his best to help his students understand.
He is a great guy, the first professor I met at Case. Everyone loves him for his sense of humor, and he is actually pretty funny sometimes. However, his tests are ridiculously hard compared to the homework assigned, and you will typically find problems on the test that did not have similar material covered in class. I had an A+ in high school calc.
Chris was one of the best teacher I've ever had. Quizzes were not hard. Understand and work through, then you'll be fine. Tests were okay, but final was tough. As long as you pay attention, it's easy to get an A.
He teaches slow and it's pretty easy to understand so that's great! Make sure you do the quizzes well, those are pretty much the bulk of your grade. However, he is an average teacher really, nothing special but he is loved because he is often funny in a childish way.
He teaches very well and provides lots of practice questions. TA are very friendly. Quizzes and exams are not too hard if you have done the homework and the extensive questions.
Chris has a reputation for being super chill, which is true. But if you're taking this intro course, plan to go to the SI sessions because he isn't the best at explaining concepts. Really cool guy though imo
Hilarious and sarcastic. His personality and teaching style takes a while to get used to but he's a great lecturer. He makes the concepts easy to understand despite moving so quickly. Tests and quizzes are fair and he has a lot of practice exams and reviews for you. There are always a lot of office hours if you have questions.
Truly a one-of-a-kind math teacher. By far the best in the math department (although that doesn't really say a whole lot tbh). Do the MPODs and the homework problems in the textbook and you should be fine. Some topics are harder than others, but he will gladly explain them to you if you need help.
Chris is an awesome professor, but his tests are HARD if you are not the best at math (especially test 3). I recommend doing the MPODS like everyone else says but for the tests also do problems from previous tests. Go to office hours, and if you still don't understand something, watch the Organic Chemistry Tutor's videos on YouTube.
Pretty solid dude. Kinda funny in class. He has good examples. Take good notes, study your notes, pass the class no problem.
Even over zoom, his lectures were still good and he's a funny guy. Quizzes are very easy, but the tests were more difficult. He posts a ton of practice exams and reviews which were helpful. Do the MPODS!
Chris is a great guy and I think if I liked math I would have enjoyed his class more. His class moves quickly and there are weekly quizzes so be prepared for that. If you are online, tests will have no partial credit, which can hurt your grade quite a bit. When I was struggling he was quick to help me. There are few grades so do well on tests+quiz.
He is very good at explaining difficult concepts. He guides people well towards the material that they need to cover and practice to prepare well for the tests. Reading the textbook is optional but recommended. He also posts practice problems after every lecture and working through those problems is very important for success in the class.
His office hours are really helpful and he's a sweet guy. I struggled a lot because of the lack of partial credit when it came to online learning (seemingly for no reason). Do the MPODS to prep for weekly quizzes. Previous tests aren't as helpful if you're taking it online but the reviews are. The SIs are also pretty nice if you have questions.
Funny guy. Online learning presented its challenges but definitely manageable. Do MPODS for quiz prep but nearly memorize tough Qs from previous tests. Office hours were super helpful - find the SI(s) that works for you (like explains things in a way u understand if confused bc some of them do math their own way lol). Hard workers will do fine.
Chris was a very funny professor who always made himself or TAs available for extra help. Class time was used very well, and the time needed for external studying for the weekly quizzes was minimal. He drops your worst quiz and doubles your best test (not the final though), which can really boost your grade. One of my favorite classes so far.
Weekly quizzes that are very straightforward, but the tests are hard. Chris is very accessible and makes class enjoyable (as enjoyable as calc 2 can be). The MPODS are exactly like the tests and quizzes, so definitely do those, but don't waste your time with the textbook problems.
nice guy but hard class. gotta go to SI sessions
Chris Butler's class was fine, but he made me and other students uncomfortable with some of his jokes/comments. You don't need the textbook at all and it's also free online, also the previous tests are the best review material.
Chris is an absolutely amazing professor. He is drop dead hilarious, and tells a bunch of jokes to get you through Calc (which he teaches very well). Assigns daily quizzes which are very straightforward if you do the MPODs. Tests weren't a breeze but doable if you studied. Everyone should get a B or an A. Definitely my favorite professor so far.
We love Chris. He's not afraid to tell you when you're being stupid and watch out for flying rubber bands during his office hours, but definitely do show up for office hours. Those are always a good time. His grading criteria is super clear, and he gives like 10 years of previous exams to use for studying for tests. Can't recommend highly enough
Was a great first professor. Be prepared for weekly quizzes and make sure you study for the tests and you'll be fine. Tests my semester were all multiple choice, which made them slightly more difficult, but that usually isn't the case.
Chris is a great professor, he teaches clearly and grades faith. Of you ever feel like you deserve more points you can go up to him and ask, he won't always give them, but you can appeal. His lectures are hilarious, definitely worth attending.
Funny guy. You won't regret going to his lectures. Make sure to go to his office hours every once in a while.
Chris Butler is a solid professor. His quiz and test questions are very straightforward and dont deviate much from the practice problems (which unfortunately makes this class more prone to memorization). However, he derives most concepts and provides more than ample information on the formula sheet given on tests. Almost half the people get an A.
Attending class is very important cause he doesn't post any of the content, but it's worth it. Don't bother with the textbook, MPODS are more than enough. Office hours are always a lot of fun and very helpful with questions too, make sure to go and talk with him once in a while. Tests are extremely fair, exactly the content you expect, graded fast.
Chris is an amazing professor who will inspire you to enjoy learning calculus through his clear (and funny) lectures. The daily quizzes keep you on your toes and tell you which topics to study extra on. There are ample resources to succeed such as several years of past tests and lots of practice problems on his website. Your best test counts twice.
Grading is based off of daily quizzes (4pts each) and tests (100pts 3) - basically 8 pts 1%. The total in the class is 800pts. He does not curve. Butler gives off "cool math" teacher vibes and I love him. You can see that he loves teaching the class and if you have questions he will answer them. Probably one of my favorite prof so far. dont skip
Chris is a great professor. Lectures are clear, and daily quizes help to make sure you are doing the assigned work. MPODS are much more helpful than textbook problems. He offers up to 1 percentage point of extra credit, which can really help. Tests are very similar to previous exams, so they are the best study material provided.
Easy extra credit points, I stopped going to class and was fine (but I already knew a lot of calc), just do the MPODS and the quiz review and you should be fine and test reviews. He's a funny guy, sometimes I sit outside of his Math121 class, and hear them with uproarious laughter.
I love Chris!! I took AB Calc junior year and got a 5, so this class was mostly just a review, but I still had to work and study hard. The daily quizzes are pretty chill, and so are the exams. The textbook problems can be helpful as extra practice, but the MPODs are where it's at--the quizzes and tests often take problems straight from there. GL :)
Do homework daily; you'll ace his exams. He won't easily give you an excused absence even if your reason is genuine. Got a 0/20 on a quiz(online). I emailed him a day before about an excused absence, really couldn't attend the quiz but he straight-up denied it. So, good luck with that! Other than that an excellent teacher, he teaches very well.
He makes the subject very easy to understand, and gives a lot of resources for practice. Absolutely not mandatory homework, all of it is just for practice. Never used the textbook even once. Daily quizzes, and problems are very similar to the MPODs, so those are useful. He will answer any questions you have in class, and makes sure you understand.
Good professor and good lecturer, show up to class and the grades will come. And make sure to do the MPODs.
Great lectures, lots of resources for tests and quizzes, material always makes sense. There are daily quizzes at the beginning of class, so if you're not on time every day, your grade will suffer.
As one who could have AP'd out of 122 and 121, I'd say I still had to work quite a bit towards getting an A in Chris's classes. That being said, Chris is a very good lecturer and can explain calculus to anyone from any level. Beware though! He does not use Echo360 so class attendance is mandatory.
Struggled through 122 while 121 was a cakewalk. A funny professor who is very approachable after classes and genuinely cares about student. Tests are def a time crunch but doable as long as you do well on quizzes and MPODs. Recitations were a waste of time and my SI's need better vetting. Mine did nothing to prepare us for the weekly quizzes
Beware he does not curve, but overall I think his class is doable. If you do your mpods daily and go to office hours when needed, you will def get an A in this class. I recommend doing at least 1-3 past tests before taking the actual. Time yourself. It will help you keep pace. Imo I don't think the tests were a time crunch but everyone is different
Honestly Prof Butler is one of the most overrated professors at CWRU. I get it the man is funny and cool, but his teaching style was way to simple compared to the problems he gave us in the mpods and class tests. His teaching only consisted of giving us problems on the board. Additionally, he was pretty strict about grade cutoffs.
I didn't ever go to lecture, but Butler was always easily accessible by email, and I had no problems learning any material I needed on my own. There's so many resources on his website, and so many problems you can do. He gives it all to you, and I appreciated it. You don't need a textbook, and the quizzes and tests were completely manageable.
Chris is an EXCELLENT professor for math, especially for those who hate the subject. He puts thought behind his lectures since they're entertaining and explain even the toughest concepts in easy terms. The quizzes are stupidly easy, esp if you get a good SI. You also accumulate extra credit for going to on-campus events, like Chipotle fundraisers.
I've already posted a review but just wanted to say that the 3.8 difficulty is absolute bogus. He's definitely one of the easier professors because he explains the material so well. Yes, the tests are a lot harder than in-class lecture problems but abt the same difficulty as homework questions. From hardest to easiest: HW, test, lecture, quiz.
This was the second course I took with Chris, and he remains one of the best math teachers I've had. Weekly quizzes are very easy, and the SIs do a good job at explaining the material. He has a lot of Office Hours, and the SI sessions are very helpful. If you make a point to get to know him outside of class, the course will be much more enjoyable.
Old school professor vibes but kinda a cool guy too. Super watered down in lectures but the tests are somewhat harder. That being said if you study and do the homework you should be fine. Beware though he does not record his lectures so show up to class!!!!
THIS MAN IS THE GREATEST MATH PROF ON EARTH
Good Lectures
Chris is an awesome math professor for 121. The class is an achievable A if you do the MPODS before class, go to lectures, and stay on top of concepts. The textbook homework is pointless. Daily quizzes are a pain, and a little mistake can make your grade on them 3/4. Extra credit for going to activities around campus which is nice.
If you are lucky enough to have him as your professor, go to class. His lectures are amazing and make the class super easy
If you try you will do well. If you don't it's easy to do bad.
4 difficulty rating is absolute bogus. Pretty easy and lax class
Chris Butler is the best thing about this godforsaken college. He makes you fall in love with the college like nobody else could. Make sure to show up to his office hours, if you make a mistake on the whiteboard he shoots a rubber band at you.
Took Calc II senior year in high school and got a 4 on the test but would highly recommend this class. Thought that I knew a lot of Calc seeing that I got a 4 but am glad that I retook it. Chris is a great professor but in order to understand whats going on you need to go to lecture, just receiving notes isn't enough. The textbook was unhelpful.
Very fair professors, about as good as it gets. Recitation for 122 is annoying but fine.
Definition of a weed out class. If you have a strong math background this class will be very easy, but for those who don't you'll have to work harder. Chris is an okay professor (a bit unsettling with the jokes though)
A solid choice as an intro math prof. This class will require you to study daily due to the daily quizzes. Gives plenty of resources to study from and the class is structured very well. Exams were of varying difficulty with the final being harder than other years, but never felt I was struggling with the class.
Overall had a good experience. Exams often had tough problems that he had likely skimmed over once, pay attention to that. A small amount of extra credit for attending campus events, which is nice. The biggest thing to know is that, although attendance isn't "mandatory," there is a quiz every single class. It is in the beginning of class, too.
Professor Butler was amazing in Math 122 for me. The lectures were clear and super easy to follow. He's super fun and gives a ton of extra credit opportunities.
Perfect Professor
Professor Butler is highly overrated. He seems very nice during lecture but his office hours are awful and not useful at all. He does not care about his students and is not friendly during his office hours.
Chris Butler is easily the best math professor that I have ever had. The lectures are very straightforward and the quizzes are weekly, but easy. He posts a bunch of reviews to prepare for exams and the exams are usually questions from past tests. 10/10 professor
he is really good at lecturing. tests can be tricky but if u know ur stuff youll be just fine.
Lectures are informative, while not mandatory they are necessary to understand the content. Gives lots of stories and anecdotes in lecture to keep it interesting. Best part of the course is the daily MPOD (math problems of the day) so be sure to stay up to date with those or else it is easy to fall behind.
Chris is an interesting character. He makes learning math enjoyable with his jokes, but at the same time taught concepts in a peculiar manner. Some of the lessons were easy and explained well; others, however, were hard and a bit different from the test questions, leading to much toil. I understood high school advanced calculus better.
Daily quizzes on previous class material
This man made me love math after coming from math 125. Honestly do the MPODS after class and go to office hours in case you did not understand. Plenty of Extra credit and practice available as well. Funny person regardless of what people say.
Chris Butler is what you want in a math prof. The only real flaw I can think of is that he went through the lectures fairly quickly, sometimes covering lots at once. However the class is not too hard as long as you are using even a small fraction of the resources he makes available to you.
Your grade entirely depends on the tests and quizzes. He gives a lot of extra credit opportunities but then limits them to 8... He's a grate professor but if you don't show up to class he posts absolutely nothing on canvas to let you know what all he covered in class which is kinda annoying
With minimum studying you can earn A in the course. Prof Butler was ok prof but in class and homework problems were too easy for exams. I wish he did more complicated problems representative of test problems.
Chris Butler is a fantastic professor. You should definitely take his class if you have the chance. Chris explains the material very well, and he's really funny. The textbook is useless for this class. I found the MPODs and test reviews to be more than sufficient practice for tests and quizzes.
Chris Butler is a good professor. He is entertaining, does a good job at explaining the material, and is very accessible outside of class. If you want to do well in his class, though, you need to be in class and awake. Every lecture is very important, and missing any of them could be pretty bad for you.
I had him for both Math122 and calc 3 over the summer. His teaching style is so clear and concise with lots of examples that help students get used to the type of problems that will be on the test. I will say that his tests are a bit more challenging as they use different applications of the things you learn in class but never too much.
He's a cool dude who makes the lectures pretty fun and easy to keep up with. As long as you do the MPODs, you'll be fine.
Good at giving lectures and clear on the material, worst part of the class is the textbook which is poorly written and the online version is a pain to work with. That said, extra problems provided and lectures stand fine without using the text.
Teaches a small amount of the material, then expects the students to dissect the problem on exams and quizzes trying to answer questions that were not covered. Teaches new material and tests you on it the very next day.
Very easy to understand, reinforces what he teaches, gives clear examples for each topic, very good with putting out review problems for all quizzes and tests, and even includes pasts exams and keys, makes his teaching entertaining, makes sure to connect with his students
Chris tries his best to keep lectures engaging and easy to understand, though his analogies sometimes make material more confusing than it has to be. The test questions are a lot harder than the daily quizzes, but he gives you 10 past midterms as study material so scoring high is definitely possible. PS don't get the textbook just do his MPODs
Quiz almost every single lecture. Have many extra credit opportunities. Chris is nice and approachable. He shows a lot of examples in lecture which helps you to learn how to solve the problems.
Don't buy the textbook, the MPODS are literally what's on tests/quizzes. He gives many past midterms before exams and they're super helpful. SI sessions can also be helpful but they're sort of hit or miss. Chris is an amazing prof
Loved Chris Butler. The practice problems he gives are great. The class isn't hard, but it will be if you never do the practices. I can't really imagine anyone teaching the class better than him to be honest. Definitely don't buy the textbook. Just use his practice problems and/or the online textbook if you want to do those problems.
Chris Butlers class is supremely easy. he now post class notes from every day and the quiz for the next day will definitely be a variation of the problem he did in class the day before. with the extra credit and the lenient grading policy it should be very easy to get an A in this class.
Professor Butler was a great introductory mathematics professor! He tells you exactly what he expects you to know and gives you MPODS, which are worksheets with problems that are identical to those on the tests. The weekly quizzes incentivize you to study before the exam so there is less right before and you can get up to 8 extra credit points.
quiz every day so u need to go to class to at least take the quiz. its genrally helpful to go to class if u dont already know the topic he is teaching. he teaches in a really indirect way which is annoying, like he only explains how to do it the long way. dont do the textbook problems just do the mpods. condescending during office hours.
Engaging lecturer. Provides an abundance of study material that closely resembles the actual test questions for each of 4 exams. Go to class, do the MPODs before each quiz (no need to use the textbook), and spend a few to several hours studying for each exam with past years' exams
Go to lectures. Do MPODS. Get A
Adequate teacher in that you would be proficient with the material when you finish the class. However, as someone new to calculus n.b.I know that's rare at CWRU I find it hard to fully understand him especially in Calc I since he goes super fast and daily quizzes made me miserable. He is condescending at his office hours but SIs are helpful.
Great professor. As long as you do the quiz reviews and the test from prior years you will be good in this class. Only bad thing about it is that class is usually early in the day and lectures or notes are not posted on canvas in the case you miss/skip.
Chris definitely knows his stuff, but he gives zero time to absorb it before he's off to the next topic, which isn't great if you're not a math-savvy person. The resources he gives are definitely helpful, but there are points where your success depends entirely on how many steps he decides to skip that day. If you're not a math person, god save you
DO MPODS! They are really helpful and let you know if you understand the lectures. Practice quizzes and practice exams he posted are also helpful. No need to worry if you know some math. He's classes are interesting and easy to understand, and he is funny. Will definitely miss his math class.
Chris was an overall decent professor. You can safely ignore any negative comments about him because this class is not as bad as it seems. Just go to lecture and do MPODS (that's it, and maybe additional SI Sessions for the harder units). The only difficult part of this class was 2 units later in the semester. Overall, pretty great class.
Chris is a great lecturer. He keeps the classes entertaining and enjoyable while still relating to math. Don't bother paying for the online textbook, just do the online MPOD problems. There is a quiz in class everyday, so don't skip. He has lots of office hours and the SI leaders do too. Get help if you don't understand something. Great professor.
Calc 2 is a step up from Calc 1. The quizzes are a lot more difficult, especially the ones later on in the course. Just stay on top of things and don't bother to buy the textbook. Do the MPODs every day and go to his office hours or the great SI leader office hours. Chris is funny and entertaining but keeps it related to math. Start studying early.
Excellent professor. You will get an A in this class by doing all practice problems, ESPECIALLY for the series unit. Don't get discouraged by one bad exam. You get so many pts in this class from a 20 pt quiz each wk & three exams + final, as well as up to 1% extra credit. Make each quiz count, do the entire quiz review and really understand it.
Great lecturer and provides abundant practice material for quizzes and exams
The goal of the class seems to be "get students through calc", which is definitely achieved by his engaging, hilarious, and straight-to-the-point lectures. Easy to get help from him or TAs, and so long as you are consistent with the practice problems posted, you are essentially guaranteed to do well in exams.
He is a great person and a well-respected teacher among all students who know him. His teaching style is simple: in class, it starts with a quiz on the previous day's work and then finishes with a lecture and questions. The course material isn't hard but the load of work can become a challenge, specifically having to study for the daily quizzes.
Chris is a great lecturer who keeps things engaging. As long as you stay on top of the practice problems and use resources like unstuckstudy AI, you're set for success. Definitely recommend this class.
He posts all of his notes online and has a lot of resources for the tests and finals (including years of past tests). The blue book daily quizzes are easy single questions. Show up to take the blue book quizzes and read over the class notes you'll do fine! He offered 8 points of extra credit for various events (including frat parties).
he is pretty much an unavoidable professor if you are in engineering. he is really weird and condescending.
very funny guy very clear requirements just show up to lecture, study for your quizzes, and you'll get the grade you want!
Good lecturer. It is best to show up and pay some attention or you will fall behind on the daily quizzes for 121. Class is not extremely difficult as it is very clear what needs to be done to do well, but if you don't you will struggle.
Chris's lectures are quite enjoyable and engaging. His lectures and daily practice problems line up well with what is on exams and weekly quizzes. Attendance is not mandatory, and homework was not graded. The grade you get is pretty much dependent on the amount of effort you put in the class. He and his TAs were readily available outside of class.
Made calculus easy to learn. Pay attention and you'll get an A. He posts an enormous amount of review and helpful materials for each test, especially the final.
I took his class thinking it'd be easy because of my past experience with ap calc but don't get too comfortable. you have a daily quiz and in the end every point matters. lectures are enjoyable and clearly he is very knowledgeable. i honestly looked forward to his class and would recommend taking his course.
Professor Butler (Chris) was overall an amazing lecturer. For MATH 121, there were daily quizzes on the previous lecturer topics. Three tests and one final with your best test score being doubled. Overall, I really liked the structure of his course and he was a wonderful professor at office hours and was passionate in teaching math.
Lectures were clear and engaging, homework questions prepare you well for quizzes and tests, ample amount of resources, reasonable grading and you can get 8 extra credit points (and your best test counts twice!)
Chris is super easy if you have AP calculus AB, BC, or IB experience. He is very nice and has daily quizzes that REQUIRE DAILY ATTENDANCE! You will not realize how much weight the quizzes have until the very end. He also offers extra credit if you attend "social gatherings" and club events. Super nice and chill with tons of resources to succeed.
Genuinely a great professor - highly recommend go to his office hours. Grading isn't a problem - he doubles highest test, drops lowest quiz, and gives EC for campus events. Def do the MPODs, quiz/test reviews (they may be word for word on the exam). SIs aren't too bad, but there are better ones than others.
Quizzes every day but they are 2 minutes and for the most part easy. Homeworks aren't checked. So much study material for tests and the final exam. He shows you the previous test for the last like seven years so just study those and you're good. Up to 8 points of extra credit. Best test gets doubled.
Hes not kind or helpful in office hours. Hes laughed in my face when I came to him for help, and I know I'm not the only one with that experience. He does give extra credit, but its always things you have to pay for to get the credit, which adds up. His quizzes and exams are all doable, but sometimes theyre too long
the quizzes are only 1 question, which can be really bad for your grade with even the slightest mistake. Like doing all the math right but forgetting to add +c to the end of the answer will take your grade to a 75 instead of just taking off a couple points. also he's mean and laughs at his students who ask for help
Classes are massive. He is nice and straightforward with the material. Daily quizzes can be annoying. Tests were not that easy and he always threw the hardest questions on each test. The final was difficult. He does provide a lot of practice questions so utilize that. SI sessions are not very helpful so just go to your friends for help.
easily the best professor at cwru. neuroscience major who switched from bme and thus had the option of 126 or 122 and took 122 simply because of chris butler. extremely funny. after some of these units, if you don't walk out of class laughing your butt off, you obviously do not have a sense of humor. very easy to understand. oh and kill ig lol
Fall 2024. Class was very well structured. 50 daily quizzes, three 100 point tests (best score doubled), one 200 point final. It is easy to lose points if you don't pay attention or put in no effort, but otherwise Chris is an amazing lecturer and he and his SIs are very accessible if you need additional help. While optional, MPODs are very helpful.
Honestly, if you have the prior knowledge needed for the class, Chris Butler is an okay teacher but if you don't good luck with self-studying. Having a quiz everyday honestly is what tanks your grade. The 1% extra credit is quite helpful but I definitely would recommend taking 125 over 121 if you can.
i'm hopelessly brainless and i still pulled through with an A and (knock on wood) currently have an A in 122. very easy professor/class and honestly super funny. take this class over 126 if you have a choice imo
Daily Quizzes were a thing, but as long as you attended his lectures, which btw were super funny and overall amazing, you didn't really have to worry about much.
He's way too overrated.
Butler is a fine teacher. His lectures are good and engaging but he is not a perfect 5/5. Frankly he is overrated but that doesnt mean he isnt good. Just make sure you put a lot of time into studying as his lectures are only helpful of you already know a bit of the topic otherwise its easy to get lost.
Makes it easy to pass, just do all of the MPODS and reviews.
He is quite clear of what he is teaching
He is rude and unkind to students. I wonder if it's because he feels left out, being a professor with only a master's degree while everyone else has a Ph.D.
Spring 2025. Graded by 11 quizzes (lowest dropped), 3 exams (highest doubled), 1 final. 8 points extra credit available. Class is not difficult if you do MPODs for every lecture and attend office hours. Tests and quizzes mirror the format he teaches in lecture, so lecture is useful even if you know the content.
Mans this class be harder than any other classes Ive been takin. I be studyin before every class for like sixteen hundred hour. First exam I got 55%. Then 42%! And then 29%. So I call up Mr. B and be like yo why Im failin so bad? And he be like mans yous gotta study. 16% on dat final. No help at all. Turns out, exams only had Calc 3 questions!
This guy is just the GOAT what can I say
Awesome guy. Keeps lectures fun and provides lots of support materials for students. The content can be tricky sometimes, but he provides so much support with practice tests and problems that it becomes much more doable.
Goat manifestation in mathematical form.
god forbid life gets in the way of you taking a test and he will give you a harder make-up exam... all of these people glazing him did well in ap calc and are taking the class for a gpa boost methinks. when I took this class I learned better from youtube
His classes are interesting however meeting him in office hours, he was rude about makeup quizzes. His first few tests are easy but don't get overconfident, 3rd test was impossible. Make sure to go to quizzes everyday, I messed up bc I got good grades and didn't realize the missed quiz points building up. 8 points of extra credit + ATTN pop quiz.
Your grade is solely dependent on quiz and exam grades. Quizzes are weekly (during recitation) and are worth 20 points, but your worst one gets dropped at the end of the semester. Overall, Butler is a super engaging, hilarious professor, and his attitude makes it easier to get up at 8:25AM three times a week.
As someone who got a 3 in AP Calc AB I was scared but he's great. There's a 4 point quiz everyday which forces you to keep up with material. Exams are very doable since he posts lots o practice exams and review questions. He does reviews the day before the exam too. Love him my king
