I took an INTRO to film class and unfortunately, this guy doesn't know what that means. He is often arrogant and blatantly rude to students. He interrupts students when they are talking and spends the entire "discussion" time listening to the sound of his own voice. He does not have the ability to connect to students. Avoid him if you can!!!
Really bad at telling you what he expects tells you an 8 page paper gives vauge guidelines on a grade weighted paper you get it back a month later with all the suggestions of what he wanted too little too late im sure as more people rate people will see im not the only one with this issue as everyone in class complained about it
SO RUDE! This guy is has no respect for anyone. The class was waaay to hard for an intro. Huge papers and constant quizes that are completely unfair. This person should not be teaching at CLC. Office visits are extremely akward and unhelpful. DO NOT TAKE THIS GUY! I have never had so much frustration with a class before! Avoid at all costs!
DO NOT TAKE THIS PERSON! Extremely hard course. Tons of quizzes. This guy is a bad teacher and a huge nerd.
I'm not really sure why everyone has such a huge problem with Chris. Yeah, there is a quiz for every movie you watch, but they are all open notes (including the final exam, which is also open text) Always has extra credit on the quizzes and outside of them. Seems a bit pompous, but in a self-depreciating way, so it's kind of funny.
While instructions are vague he i a good teacher and really loves the subject. He can be a bit rude, but only if a student has disrespected him. I loved the class and thing that Chris was a great teacher, if you actually put effort forth, you will be rewarded.
he Was Bareable. a bit rude but i learned alot from him. HELLO PEOPLE we are in college. he is a bit understanding. just pay attention if he catches you talking or txting he will automaticly target you for more disruptions
Terrible Teacher. Avoid him at all costs. Rude, obnixious, and extremely disrespectful. Quizzes were rediculous. Grades on papers are extremely biased on what he thinks of you. He should not be a teacher, but instead, working in a cubicle somewhere. This guy is a complete loser.
Worst teacher I've ever had. Does not promote (or appreciate) class discussion. Agree with previous posting that grade is determined based on what he thinks of you. Intro to International Film was MUCH more involved and time consuming than described - avoid at ALL COSTS!
DO NOT TAKE! Ridiculous! Worked my butt off and received a grade I did not deserve! Ten page research paper as well.
Knows his stuff but is very rude and arrogant. You will definitely work for your grade. Don't recommend taking this class with this professor
Difficult class. Extremely subjective on grading papers. Blames students for taking up class time when caught distracted after taking at least 4 minutes out of the class to scrutinize them about texting in class, talking to the person next to you, or appearing sleepy. Do yourself a favor and find another teacher for this class.
Intro to international film class was hard. If you're looking for a challenge then I recommend taking his class. lots of extra point opportunities and always keeps office hours. He is very strict with his rules and expectations but is also very clear when explaining them. If you don't follow them after that you can't blame the professor...
He is more concerned about marking you tardy than helping students. We had teacher evaluations, he told us he would find out each person, weird. He said that to scare people to write good reviews. Drinks way to much coffee which explains his premenstrual mood swings. He really needs to see a therapist to calm him down or lay off the coffee.
This class was hard, but i understood where he was coming from. It's film in Society, so obviously its tying areas of film into our everyday lives basically. Make sure you read the material and watch all the films and read all the lectures.
Horrible teacher, really gets off on humiliating others. Obviously he wasn't successful in CA. They hate him as much as CLC does. He extremely pompous and just belligerent. If you care about your grades & self-respect, stay away from this class. Hopefully, CLC will get a clue before someone sues them.
Professor knew his stuff but didn't know how to interact with his students that are paying money to hear him talk. He is like a tyrant, hooked on caffine and VERY easily distracted if you are not "being present"(IE if you are texting, laughing or talking with out raising your hand or sleeping). Taking this class is a mild form torture.
this professor is an insult to the institution of learning. he is constantly distracting the class because of his own add and has a tendency to cuss at the class and point at students as to shoot them. Hopefully administration will catch on before a law suit comes into play.
Make sure to write down everything he says because he will quiz you on it.
Topics well explained, but assignments were not. it was near impossible to write a good paper because most of the students were very confused as to what he was looking for. Its hard to ask questions in his class for fear of one of his "this is not relevant to our discussion" rants.
Complete and utter jerk. Pompous ass. Superiority complex. Shows disturbing movies and gives NO direction for his papers. Tests are ridiculous and near immpossible. His class was torture...DO NOT TAKE. And whatever you do, don't call him "Mr." it's "Dr." *rolls eyes*
His class was a joke. He was unclear on almost EVERYTHING. He constantly picked on students and went off on them for the littlest thing. Save yourself money and time!
boring class!! he was the worst teacher. it is all lecture and he gives you two very long papers, and doesn't even bother to explain them!!
The instructor was very disrespectful towards students he wasn't fond of. It seemed as though he enjoyed to hear himself speak for the entire 3 hour class. He will cut off students mid sentence, so don't expect to give your entire two cents. If you are about to take this class as an elective, please do yourself a favor and reconsider.
Terrible class. I missed one class due to being very sick and that screwed me over because he wasn't willing to help me out on what I missed. Very rude and hard to work with. I would never take a class with him again
If you are taking this class for an elective wich you probably are, do your self the largest favor in the world and switch to a professor that is not an arrogant, chide, conversational bully and un- helpful waste of human tallent! Take him if you want 1 or 2 grades lower than the one you work for on your transcript!
Simply put he is the most arrogant man I have ever had the displeasure of being around. Expect to be disrespected and put down for giving answers he deems incorrect. He is a bully and will leave you feeling worthless and confused. Do not waste your time taking this elective class, it will only be frustrating at best.
Very rude and disrespectful, The class itself is rather enjoyable, but Mr.Cooling is arrogant and I do not enjoy having him as a teacher. Can make a student feel stupid and no answer is sufficient
Picks on you, especially if you're intelligent because he has some sort of pathetic superiority complex. Good luck getting this guy to listen to you, particularly if you bring up valid points and provoke thought. Nothing is good enough for this guy. Seriously, dude? You're a community college online professor. Get over yourself.
Very arrogant. Condescending. Although I appreciated the difficulty of the class, Dr. Cooling did not seem like he was trying to teach the students more than he was trying to put them down. Even though i took the online course, his obvious lack of respect for students was still very evident.
i thought the class over all was interesting however he was a awful teacher, he would get distracted easily, pick on you and lacks a lot of patience. he does not take questions well and he assigns difficult papers without explaining them well. he needs to have more patience with his students, if you care about your GPA do not take his class
A smart guy, but too caught up in himself to teach. He gives no clear directions and grades harshly when you don't do exactly what he wants. Even when everything's done correctly, he's so picky he'll dock a few points to keep you from a perfect score. Far too condescending; avoid him. If you do though, don't get the book, you only need his notes.
I took his Intro to film course online. I love learning about film & the concepts behind it, yet he ruined my experience. He was hands down, the most disrespectful teacher I have ever had. I go to a school that has a lot of focus on film & I have never come across arrogance likes his. I'm usually up for a challenge, but not for constant put downs.
Do not take this class with this teacher- he will never care about your work, or enthusiasm- he will create his own picture of you and give you the grade you do not deserve, even if you worked your butt off the whole semester your grade will not be A or B! Find another teacher.
By far the worst professor I have ever had the misfortune of having. I was always very respectful with this man when I would ask for his assistance and guidance with my class. However, ha on the other hand was not, he was very disrespectful and arrogant. He is under the impression that he is the most intelligent person. CLC, you need to wake up!!!!
Gave no clear assignment directions, and graded so harshly. Was kind of self-asborb. And then after the class was over posted online what he was looking for in the assignments and essays. I almost flipped out.
I did really well in his class and I still think he is arrogant a hole. Admittedly he is intelligent but it doesn't make up for his other qualities. Also he has sky high expectations for an intro class.
Terrible teacher. He expects you to go deeper than what the actual meaning of the film is. It was only an intro course and he expects you to be a professional movie critic. Don't take him if you can.
Terrible teacher, not helpful, wanted way too much for an intro film class. Get over yourself dude!
Probably one of the best teachers I've had. Engaged me in the subject matter and but it was extremely hard class. I really enjoyed it and learned a lot.
All the comments you read are correct. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. I worked extremely hard in this class and it didn't matter what I did I barely made it out w/ a C. I emailed him for help and yet I still didn't receive a grade in the class that was above a C. His feedback is demeaning, extremely hard grader and expects everyone to be a film major!
Dr. Cooling knows his subject. Class lectures are clear. He is a tough grader and does not give feedback when returning grades. Therefore, you MUST ask how you can improve. When contacted, he genuinely tries to help. This class requires analytical and written communication skills - it is not as easy to get a top grade as more concrete subject.
For a guy obsessed with the idea of objective viewpoints and not allowing students to have a unique opinion, we seem to watch an awful lot of films about peoples' inner turmoil and insanity.
terrible grader with a strict guideline that is almost impossible to keep up with.
Incredibly condescending. And don't you dare call him anything less than Dr. Cooling. He's clearly intelligent and clearly knows his stuff, but he expects you to know almost as much as he does on the tests. He'll pull the whole micro-detail question just to make sure you took notes on EVERYTHING he said and did.
He gets too distracted by the things going on around him which then causes him to interrupt his lecture and distract you. He expects you to remember every little detail he's ever said and to answer questions on it. He gave 2 quizzes that were so hard that he made the next 2 quizzes small papers, a midterm and final paper and a written response exam
First 2 quizzes were open ended questions, not multiple choice. Nobody was doing well on them, so he changed them to 4 page papers. 4-5 page paper for midterm, 8-10 page paper for the final PLUS a take home exam. The only resource u have for studying are your own notes. Expects u to remember things in detail. Do not buy the book. Never used it.
I took the course for the Humanities credit. I liked the idea of it at first, but the classes were REALLY LONG I would fade in and out in some of the classes. As a professor though he is a pretty cool guy He knows his facts and he does a good job teaching the course. Make sure you get on his good side, hes a good guy, but he can be hard at times
Tough teacher, you may hate him during the semester, but I guarantee you that you will remember and appreciate his work later on. I think that he is just trying to challenge you to be open minded, more creative and critical. I strongly recommend him.
Do not take him as your teacher. I took 20+ classes at CLC, this was my LAST class , I am a TOP student . A's in EVERY class. He was awful. His expectations for an intro class were ridiculous. I got a C in this class. I questioned some of the things as I felt he did not grade me as to what the rubric said - and that was it: I did not deserve a C
Dr. Cooling knows his stuff. Well. And he expects you to know all of this in an intro class. Don't consider asking him for help as he will come off as condescending and not be helpful at all. I put in work and soul in all of my papers, and he would take off for things such as not using a semicolon where I could have. Very cocky, not helpful at all.
I attend a top University & I took this class over the summer. I have above a 3.0 and this killed my gpa. Loved the course until I received my papers back and got completely torn apart. The toughest grader I've ever seen. He tears apart every detail and only his idea is right. If you think ur a good writer you wont after this course. DO NOT TAKE!!!
Awful. Unless you're a master at spinning BS and you LOVE doing it for 8 pages, don't take this class. Really hard grader but for no other reason than liking to feel like he's taught you something, your grades will improve as the semester goes on. Made me hate movies.
This was an on-line class so it is expected to not have much interaction with the teacher, but there is no real class structure. You are give a list of movies to watch. Some weekly readings and then you have to write a 10 page paper for a midterm. The entire grade is based on 3 papers, having no clue as to what type of paper to write I withdrew
he cares about the most little things like if you yawn in class and don't cover it up. I understand that he may think its rude but pointing it out to the class is a bit more ill mannered. Its his fault why everyone yawns hes about as interesting as a book index. He wants everyone to take notes and contribute to a conversation. Do not Take!
Tough grader, condescending, does not even give back actual feedback. Wants you to critique the movie but in no way are you allowed to have an opinion. Extremely frustrating, try your best and only get a C. Get off your high horse and help us learn, not tear us down.
Literally the toughest grader I have ever had the displeasure of writing a paper for. If he doesn't agree with what you write, he will give you a C. It doesn't matter if you had perfect grammar, used the same format as his example paper and had a tutor proofread your paper and help you make your paper the best it can be. DO NOT TAKE!!! SERIOUSLY!!!
I was given a D in this class but i find it very unfair. I am, by no means, a quality writer. That being said, this is the 2nd time I have taken this class and both times I have been ripped to shreds. Never in my life have I been so discouraged to write. Lecture notes are broken and missing half of the elements (vids, pics, words). Avoid this class
For being a teacher that teaches a very interactive class, this man has zero social skills. Very rude, very condescending, very haughty. "Vauge" is probably his favorite word to use when grading. Will not listen nor help you if needed. Avoid at all costs.
Very condescending when it comes to papers; expects way too much for an intro class & can be rude. Participation in class and taking notes is the only way you'll be able to pass. Overall your grade consists of only 4 assignments; 2 papers, a presentation, and the final (which is like a mini paper). In retrospect I learned a lot though.
Do not take this class. If you normally get A's on papers. Don't take this class. He is so very VAGUE as to what he wants. Even if you go by the sample papers and what he posts to be "helpful" you still fail. I'm taking it online and the entire class grade rides on 3 papers. That's it.
Lots of papers. Little feedback. Not very helpful. Supposed to be an Intro class but not graded as one.
"Professor" cooling is a condescending pole smoker. do not take this class he is extremely unhelpful. this class is a joke. i took an intro to film class in high school and it was a piece of cake. he treats this class like its more important than life itself. don't plan on skipping class or leaving early he marks you absent no matter what you do
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!! You will not only save your GPA from dropping but also save your nerves
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!!! AS A STUDENT WITH STRAIGHT A's TRUST ME IT WILL RUIN YOUR GPA!!! Everything is based on his opinion and if yours doesn't match with his then you will not get anything higher than a C. The movies are boring. Seriously look at his overall rating, it says a lot about him as a person. TREATS IT NOT LIKE INTO CLASS!!!!!
He is one of the toughest graders you will ever see, he gets a rep of being closed minded and sort of "evil" but you can work with him, he started adding the amount you improve to your final grade and that alone helps a LOT, I got a C but only because I had 4 absences otherwise it would have been a B and I did NOT put as much effort as I should...
I never received any grades in the class. There were four graded items. I sent numerous e-mails to get clarification and never got a reply. Doesn't seem fair. Why wouldn't he return work so that we could improve?
By far the hardest course I have ever taken. He expects you to know several movies and actors when making references to them in his lecture notes, which are incredibly disorganized and unhelpful. He does not make this a 100-level course by any means & I felt so frustrated the entire time by his grading. Got a C or lower on every paper I wrote.
Grading criteria and rubrics were not clear at all, also only gives 3 opportunities to earn points throughout the entire class. Very tough grader; extremely knit-picky yet unclear about what he wants to see in your writing compared to the syllabus and rubrics.
He was a great teacher yes his lecturers were a tad bit long but he was very nice and if you had any question just ask him . He does everything by the book . She doesnr deal with black board so dont expect to see your grade there if you need help with anything just ask him . Hes probably one if the sweetest teachers at clc I would take him again.
I took this class not thinking it was going to be easy but also not expecting it to be this hard. There are only 3 papers that the whole class is based on which are graded fairly tough to be an introductory class. There were no discussions to go over any of the lectures ideas.
A very tough grader to be certain, but not without reason. While lengthy, Professor Cooling's lectures were highly insightful. There were only four grades throughout the entire semester, (including a bonus grade for improvement across papers) so the tough grading is extra impactful. Your GPA may suffer, but you'll learn much more about film.
He requires reading a boring book every week, and some weeks requires you to watch at most 2 movies, which half arent available on Netflix or YouTube and youll have to rent them elsewhere. Have to stay caught up on reading or youll fall far behind. Probably best to take if this is the only class youll be taking for a semester, so you can read.
I have advanced degrees in writing and humanities research--and I went to film school. I teach college and I've published academic research papers and a book. I got a C.
The man grades intro to film like it is film III. Extremely harsh grader. For context, I used academic interpretations of films for my exam and he somehow managed to get a C. He grades like you should know as much as him about this stuff. Dont worry though, hell offer to skype you and tell you why hes right. Also bought $163 textbook, never used
I think the reason I didnt like this class was because he was never present and never gave updates. I know assignment due dates, we as students have to know but, he never updated the class saying that assignments are due tomorrow and stuff. It is boring class... and i dont even know him as a teacher because he didnt teach at all. your on ur own
Literally so horrible. Hes understanding and will let you do things a second time or give you more time but grades like all of your work is an f until he deems different. Doesnt help when asked just says you have all the info. I dont know good luck if you have to take his class.
Grading was extremely rough and at times, it seemed unfair. Only three grades in the whole class and if you do poor on one, good luck getting the grade you want.
This is the hardest class i've taken and I only took the class because i needed the credits to graduate. I am a STEM major and my science classes were easier than his class. Really tough grader and my GPA is going to drop after this class. I put in the work and effort and it wasn't enough. highly suggest signing up for different classes
Chris asks extremely vague questions and puts students on the spot to answer them. If a student does make the correct response, oftentimes Chris will become very angry and use profanity to "make a point". Overall this class is extremely difficult and causes a lot of anxiety.
This guy was terrible! I would never take a class like this again, and I don't recommend this class for other students. His grading was harder than English Composition I, and his instructions didn't really make sense. He made this class way harder than it should have been.
Don't believe these other reviews that call Dr. Cooling an 'impossible' grader, or any other negative remark. Those are all from students who walked into his class with the mindset that it would be an easy A. If you actually put in the effort and do the work in his class, the way you view movies will be permanently altered for the better.
Literally the worst teacher I've ever had. I took the Online Anytime version of his class & it was terrible. He gives no direction when it comes to papers, says he wants you to engage with the scholarly discussion but doesn't tell you what that means, grades based on mood, and his opinion seems to be the only one that matters. Don't take his class!
The least student-centered teacher I have ever had!!!!!!!! Only 3 (lengthy) papers for assignments?! Since he grades with the most pretension--without even a rubric--it is impossible to do well in this class + he gives no opportunities for revisions. A deeply flawed class & a let down. He turns people that actually enjoy film away from studying it.
The worst professor I have ever had. He makes lecture concepts more difficult than they need to be and was rude to multiple students. Only three items in the grade book (essays) which he gives no rubric for. His opinion is the only one that matters, creativity is not allowed. Do not take his class if you have an interest in film, he will kill it.
It felt like the whole class was just him playing a joke on one student who was relentlessly helpful to him. He struggles understanding some common sense.
Even though I received a B, I didn't like his attitude. He gets upset if you yawn, and you also have to write a seven-page essay, which we all know he doesn't read. "VAGUE" is his favorite word. Also, the films he shows in class, no comment about that.
Absolute turd. Really sums it up. Do not take.
I agree with the person below absolute turd nugget. Spent 3 weeks writing a paper on my favorite movie of all time and got an F. Film class should be a class you should enjoy not one where only the professors opinions matter. Do better Christopher.
Now I know why his wife left him.
Sorry love u
Chris has a passion for film. The class I took from him was at the beginning of my film career and was a very difficult class but it made so many connections in my brain that I hadn't made prior. Understand that if you take a class from him you will also need to be as passionate about film as he is. He holds high standards and that is refreshing.
The good reviews have got to be him on alt accounts. You will never meet anyone as pretentious, rude, and condescending. How does he have a job here
He called Eve, the little white robot from Wall-E sexy.
no revision allowed, very harsh grading, feedback that felt nit-picky rather than helpful. i learned some new things, but overall do not recommend if you prefer not sprouting grey hairs.
Only three assignments, all of which are papers. I took this class online which was a bad idea because his layout on Canvas is confusing and there is no rubric for the papers. He gives examples of papers which are both from the same student from TEN years ago. His feedback is condescending and his personal opinion is all that matters. Avoid him.
I can't understand why this man is employed at a community college. He goes by the title of Dr., which is hilarious. I'm sorry, Dr. Movies, that my papers did not meet your insane criteria. I'm sorry that I've never seen any of the over 100 movies on the syllabus, because NOBODY HAS. Meeting with him made me legit sob. Pompous is an understatement.
This is supposed to be an introductory class. This professor's approach could discourage a student interested in film, especially film criticism, from pursuing that subject further.
I can't put into words how snobbish, condescending, and eggheaded this guy is. Halfway through the semester, I realized if I bent over backward and did everything exactly the way he it with no concern for creativity or thoughtfulness I'd get a good grade. I went from a low C to over 100%. If you want to learn about film, take any other professor.
He's an EXTREMELY tough grader. I would say unfairly so. He is very dreaming and arrogant too, treats full grown adults like children… which for college students is so annoying. He also is wildly inappropriate (sexual comments, whatnot) and insulting to certain religions. I wish I could say more but just read the other comments, they're all spot on
This class was a real challenge, but unstuckstudy proved invaluable for prep. The professor has high standards, but engaging with the material and using smart study tools can pay off.
I wrote an entire 10 page essay on something I was really passionate about, and then he gave me a zero because- and I quote from the email he sent me; "From a QUICK GLANCE it wasn't what I wanted" (or something like that). He didn't even read the paper. If you value film, avoid him at all costs, he will ruin the magic of film, like he did for me.
Your grade consisted of 3 total essays, there was very little instruction, and the “lectures” were all just short paragraphs. His feedback was also minimal and was a tough grader.
Horrible teacher, person and grader. Please save yourself. All he does is talk about how 'vague' your 3 300 point essays are and grades in-between sentences without fully reading or comprehending them. Worst teacher ever.
Awful, terrible, made me cry. Do not take his class he needs to be fired
A good guy, fun to talk about movies with, very good at lectures, but he struggles as an actual teacher. There are only three or four assignments, all of which are papers, none of which there's any rubric for. He just expects you to know what to do with very little guidance, its vague. I did learn things from him, but I wouldn't recommend him.
Terrible. Do not take this class.
Last class I needed, held my diploma bc he didn't like my paper. 3 300 point papers, no criteria, gurantee he won't like yours. Belittled you for asking questions. Thinks he's a godsend of a professor bc people struggle with his class. He uses intimidation and pretentious vocabulary to make you feel small. Stay away from him AT ALL COST!!!
Chris has a passion for film that's rare to see people have about anything. While some may call it pretentious to be so analytical about art, I have nothing but respect for his expertise. However, he is the most insecure teacher I have ever met. He treats his students like children and takes their every sign of inattention as a personal slight.
I took his Intro to Film class online and it was AWFUL. The feedback he gives is straight up rude and doesn't help you learn or improve whatsoever. He constantly says things are repetitive and that you need to go more in-depth. I DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE LOOKING FOR. Do NOT take his class. You will be so miserable.
Out of all the teachers I have ever had he is easily the worst. I beg anyone who is taking this course either drop or find a different teacher. He is really that bad of a teacher.
This guy is genuinely the worst professor I've ever had. I mean, he's so terrible. His feedback is worse than vomit. He does not help you, he just criticizes you. This is introduction to film, not mastery to film. genuinely hope this man gets fired. I cannot stress enough; DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS.
Don't take it if u don't have 2. The class itself consists of 2 big papers and 1 final ex. He is a tough grader. I managed to get 80 on both papers & final. He is very understanding if u get on his good side, but if he dislikes u or the way u write, u are f.cked. You have 5 Zoom meetings w/ him about the lect and the 7 movies required 2 watched
This professor is genuinely the worst. He does not provide rubrics and expects you to read his mind with the information he wants in the essays and zoom chats. He refers to the government as a reason he requires these zoom meetings (Not for a grade) when this is the only class I have had to do this for. He does not provide help, only critiques
This class was one of the most frustrating and demoralizing experiences I've had. The professor was dismissive, unapproachable, and made me feel talked down to despite my effort and communication. Expectations were unclear, and the way issues were handled felt unprofessional and unnecessarily harsh. Don't take this class ever! He deserves 0/5
I'm conflicted. It's rare I get actually valuable feedback from a teacher on my writing, but I don't like that it's buried within personal insults. The lectures are interesting and fun, but only until he berates a student for not being attentive. He's damn smart, but too much of a jerk to be worth putting up with. Would not recommend.
