His class's ok...he talks very fast sometimes... His tests are curve....His grading scale different than everyone else. Overall, kinda boring class.
His final came out of no where and had nothing to do with what was taught the whole semester. I would have been a Poli Sci major but then I took this class and decided not to be. Too hard for an intro level course.
He's a bit funny.
HE MUMBLES TOO MUCH!!! he's funny and entertaining BUT he talks fast and starts mumbling..really strict grading on tests (some guy grades it for him).. only good thing is that he curves the grades..i got a C baby!
He does mumble, but he is committed to making sure that every student succeeds in his class. The biggest tip I can give you is call him call him call him....he values people that just try.
I did bad on most of his tests, but the curve helped me get a B. He told us to study all the court cases (ton of them!) and only put ONE on the final. Class is pretty easy, its okay for a political science class. Cheesy jokes help keep you awake. Oh, and be prepared for Geo Metro bashing
He is kinda weird/funny.Just skim text from the study guide, write the best notes you can (HE DOES MUMBLE SOMETIMES,and go to class (cause I thought topics were sometimes interesting. If you call him and talk to him after class (about politics)-trust it makes a difference.I got a B and barely studied.
his lecture is so hard to understand. it's like you dont know what he says is important or not. and he does mumbles a lot. there's 3 tricky exams, a takehome exam and a final. pay attention to what's written on the board, cuz those are gonna be on the exams. o and buy the book.
Nice guy. Wants everyone to do well. Lectures are boring. He rambles...his textbook is full of rambling.
VERY BORRING!!! I MEAN TREMENDOUSLY OUT OF THIS WORLD BORRING!!! HE MADE THE SUBJECT SO BORRING THAT EVERYONE WAS ASLEEP... ANYWAY, BETTER KNOW THAT HIS FAVORITE LINE IS "45 MILLION AMERICANS DONT HAVE HEALTH INSURRANCE" THATS WHAT U BASCALLY LEARN!
terrible!! heaven forbid you have an opinion that is different from his. Very boring!! Very strange guy!
His lectures are boring.... But you should go and take good notes it will help on the test.... grades on curb so the class is not too hard just take GOOD notes...
Mumbles during lectures, nice guy, he does mean well, take good notes go by the syllabus and you will do good easy grader, somewhat
Recommend to sit infront of the class cuz he mumbles quite alot. It's not really boring except when it comes to MEDICARE and WELFARE.MAN.he can go on and on with it>TAKE GOOD NOTES cuz his test are MAINLY NOTES>GET the main idea of the CHAPTERS in the TEXTBOOK.and DO the STUDY GUIDE. READ 2% solution.MOST questions in the FINAL are BASe on the BOOK.
this guy is a nut, but he is so goofy, its entertaining. Lot of info, need to study but u will learn. People say he is boring, but its mainly aspects of Political Science that are boring.

I hated this class because of him. He is very boaring and he wont help you with anything. I asked him a question about the questions that he had from the book on our study guide and he told me that I would find the question by reading the book and he wou
I took the statistics class, and another class from Dr. Dennis. He is hilarious. So kooky, I love him! The class is difficult, and if you don't keep up with the reading, the quizzes will get you (they got me!) but you can learn a lot from him. I love i
Omg this professor is a WIERDO!! He mumbles and makes these political jokes that no one laughs at and when you ask him a question he doesn't give you an answer, he gives you an analogy! OMG his grading is pretty leneant but other than that... psshh DROP THE CLASS BEFORE ITS TOO LATE! lol
I adored his class. He was hilarious and easy to joke with. Even though we had different politcal views he didn't hold it against me like some teachers do. His tests were on the questions he gave and it was a total breeze. Though we did have like a quiz a week. I would totally take his classes anytime.
to telly ou the truth, this class is ****in hard. He doesn't telly ou whats on the exam and nothing on his study guides or the book are on his exams. He only tests on stupid****. he mumbles and he's bill nye the science guy.
This is one of the most difficult classes in the MA program, but just do the work and it's not that bad. He's a wonderful person to get to know...and is totally helpful.
Took him my freshman year and hated it. The final was a complete slap in the face-came out of no where. Totally made my interest in Political Science disappear. I ended up going with Criminal Justice and loved it.
I do give him credit for trying to wake up the class with jokes, but they usually aren't funny. He's an OK teacher, but he's always too into his own opinions and goes off on tangents sometimes. he does remind me of Bill Nye the Science Guy though.
Don't take POSC at 8 in the morning wiht him
This guy cracks me up. I personally think the lectures are interesting, but thats just me..He does mumble but makes an effort to make connections and relate the material to modern circumstances. If you're smart, go with this teacher because the curve is HUGE and you'll do really well. SIT IN THE FRONT. I cannot stress that enough.
I give Dr. Dennis a lot of credit for trying so hard to add atleast one joke in all his lectures, but this is not the class to take at 8 in the morning, Its true his curve is great for those who are smart and there are only 3 tests and a final and the lowest test is dropped.
I took his class at 8. Let me tell you this guy has a huge personality. He curves the test at times 45 is a C!!!! well I never liked history or politics...but I now know more on voting, economical, non-economical issues. You do get things out of this class and use it in the real world. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK DR> DENN
really good teacher!Fun & helpful.applies class to current issues. he might mumble SOMEtimes, but just ask him to repeat himself, he'll do so. Willing to answer questions after.if taking @8AM SIT IN FRONT.Listen, take good notes.Provides clear outline for lecture.STUDY NOTES WELL for tests(huge curves)Final is accumulative.Good professor!Nice/funny!
I would recommend taking someone else. Mumbles a lot, and tests are hard, but does grade on a curve. He will repeat himself if asked. I felt his tests were too hard to retain the material. Has quite liberal attitude. I think he makes POSC more complicated than it should be. You will be OK if you have to take him.
Prof. Dennis mumbles sooo much! He constantly needs to repeat himself, because students cannot hear, or understand what he is saying. If you can, take class w/someone else. He is a nice person/teacher, but his tests are hard! Too much material to cover.
GREAT TEACHER. PERIOD. (You can't help but focus on him when he talks because he looks so much like those charismatic, quirky politicians...haha)
pretty easy-going guy, goes back over material if you need help. Sit near the front if you can because he tends to mumble and you won't understand what he says. He curves the tests A LOT and your grade depends on 3 out of 4 tests (one is the final). Would recommend if you're looking for a B or a C.
Interesting class. I was never interested in politics until this class.
very interesting class. sit in the front because he does mumble with some words. best of all, he allows student to record his lecture, best way to review missing information during lectures. his curving his the best thing of his class.
he is a nice guy, a little wierd at times, but entertaining. This class is boring but needed for GE. Just go to class and pay attention and you will get an A. He loves when you ask questions/participates. i got an A
I really don't like political scence and this class is really boring- but if you go to class and take notes you'll be fine for the tests, as in getting an A. I didn't read the book- but skimming it would help.
Is he still telling the green tea jokes? I thought he was a cool professor in the mid to late 90's...not too hard but quite funny.
um. yeah. I didnt learn anything. I still got a good grade though. I didnt read the book. But his lectures did not make any sense. I was lost so i ended up drawing on my papers instead.
Great teacher! For the class that he is teaching, he makes it entertaining and enjoyable. He also gives out a coursepack that tells you virtually everything that will be on the test. Highly recommended!
I didn't care for this class too much... not that it wasn't easy..but for a 100 level class it was a bit hard. The professor is a nice guy...but the class is pretty boring. The material is straight foward though. Basicially this is a so so class
I really enjoyed his class&his lectures. You can learn a lot about politics & overall the class wasn't too hard as long as you know what to study for the tests(which he gives you in SGs). Very energetic with his lectures which can keep you awake. If you think he's too hard, then you shouldnt be in college. Easy A w/huge curve.
This teacher is extremely boring; however, he curves like theres no tomorrow. Take him if you want to fall asleep.
Boring unclear lectures. Hard class for a 100 level class. I didn't learn anything at all and struggled to stay awake during lecture. Only positive is that he curves... so if everyone did bad, your F is now a B or C. I studied hard for every test and barely passed with a C.
Extremely boring. Very hard to talk yourself into going to this class. I almost fell asleep every lecture. I did not learn one thing, but he does curve his tests so when I got a 56/100 it was a 79%. Take a different POSC professor if possible
man this guy is so boring but he curves like crazy which makes the class much eaiser. dont read the book it worthless. i only read like the first 3 chapters the gave up. it wont help. he gives study guides which help a little not really. i wouldnt really recommend. but hes pretty easy. just try to take good notes in class and u should be fine.
The course packet was my savior!!! I can honestly say I went to class no more than 7 times. I got c's in his test since he curves. Only thing to worry about is the final essay which actually requires knowledge of the material taught. If u want an A you better sit in the front because 1. he's boring and 2.he writes with faded markers
Everyday he walks into class (in either a maroon or black pleather coat, always) looks at a student and asks "well?"(meaning quiz or not). He then tells some poker joke about the students scared face and hands out quiz at least once a week. Then he starts his regular rant and ramble. Guy is nuts, loved his class. Gives home # so he can always help.
THis class was so boring. attendance was not mandtory but highly recommended. If u have a good set of notes the test shouldn't be difficult. His very helpful, thake the class just make sure you pay attention.
I would not recommend taking this class if you are planning to get an easy A or B. Not only does he present lots of material you won't remember, but it is very boring. Tests are curved, 3 tests, one final. There are essay on every test. Taking good notes can be difficult. This man likes to mumble and did I mention that he makes the class boring??
he is probably the most helpful professors ever, he goes over all assignments in great detail and gives you his home number to call him. every class he practically begs everyone to call him with questions. "my phone isn't exactly ringing off the hook" the class was somewhat difficult, he gives a quiz every week. but he curves big time, take him!
I can't really comment on the ease of this class. Its something that has to be taken (as a grad student). He wants you to call him, and I'm serious here, you have to call him--on the phone. I found this incredibly odd, and to be frank unnerving.
fun guy & likes to tell jokes. tests are based on lecture. textbook is whatever. the best part is that he doesnt keep you the entire class period & he curves tests.
Dr. Dennis is a very bright teacher with plenty of experience/knowledge. Lectures are both amusing & sometimes boring. Grades easily, quiz every week, weekly readings, term paper, and a final exam. You'll get an A in the class if you always read and actually attend. Otherwise you're grade will suffer since he remebers peoples faces.
Bill Nye + Bob Sagget = Prof. Dennis. No he's not quirky and fun, but he looks funny like the above two stated. He mumbles so much you can't really understand what he's saying even when you sit up front. He tries to make analogies to teach you but his lectures are worth nothing. you really won't learn in this class. walk away now while you can.
This teacher is awful. He alternates between shouting and mumbling in the lecture, so it is very easy to miss what he is saying sometimes. Come on time all the time so you can get all the notes, you will need them. ALthough he curves like crazy, this DOES NOT ensure you will get a good grade. Take ANYONE else if possible!
Fun teacher. Tells jokes. Mumbles sometimes. Uses the book on the tests, but its a pretty interesting book, so it's no big deal. Show up to class!!! Tests are based on the notes and sometimes on the book. Curves (1st test, A=68-100, B=42-67, ETC.) don't change much throughout the year. Pretty chill prof.
Very friendly. He can be very helpful and before class starts he takes his time to talk to everyone. He cares about his students a lot. Lectures can be boring at times but they contain only the important stuff. Tests can be easy because the important things are what he always repeats and he curves tests and drops your lower scores.
Dennis is great!! If you do all the reading, you will do fine on the weekly quizzes, there is also one paper. He curves like crazy so you might think you have a D when you really have a B! Hes extremely helpful and gives you his home phone number to call him for questions, even though no one did. I would take him again for sure.
Great professor, just do the reading and pay attention in class. Very passionate professor, and easy to talk to. TAKE HIM!!
helpful professor. class is boring, but if you take good notes and briefly look over material for quizzes, should be able to get an A.
He mumbles a lot which makes him hard to understand. Class can be pretty boring but he really makes himself available for help. Heavy reading from the text, you'll pretty much read cover to cover but if you do it and answer the questions he gives, you'll ace the quizzes and get an A. One term paper, not hard but tedious. Take only if necessary.
If you have a chance to take him for ANY class, TAKE HIM! He is one of the smartest teachers I have ever had. It can be boring at times, but if you just do the work and take decent notes, you'll learn a lot, and appreciate the knowledge he wants you to gain. I can't wait to take another class by him!
This class is a 100 level class, but his grading criteria and information are WAY too hard for an undergrad class. must show up to class to get the notes. stay close to the front because its hard to hear him. he rambles on and mumbles. he's smart, but not effective in communicating. take a different teacher for posc100 unless its your major
Horrible. Dont take him at all costs. Everything is just out of order for his. Does weird lectures, unable to understand his words clearly. Book is practically not needed. Need SUPER good note taking. His lectures are too fast paced to even take effective notes. Mumbles and goes off topic occasionally. Avoid him!
If you like a completely liberal biased teacher than take him! Bashes on conservatism non stop! Is helpful, tests are extremely hard, NOT FAIR AND BALANCED!!!!!!!!!
i went to class lectures and read through the textbook to complete my study guides for each of the 3 exams given through the semester. but his tests had mc, short response, and essay... and let me say it wasn't the easiest! didn't do too well in his class..
Dennis takes a highly interesting subject and makes it far more confusing than it really. There is mandatory weekly reading of about 50 pages a week and a lecture that does not seem relevant to the assignment. One 13 page paper due at the end. He talks far to fast to debate some of his nonsense. I love the subject but would not take his class again
First of all, you need to go to class. The majority of exams are from the notes. He talks fast, goes on random tangents, but keeps the material interesting. Everything is based on a curve, 3 tests, 10 quizzes and that's it. No homework. "Office hours" consist of literally calling him on his house phone. Got an A. Study, and you'll be fine.
AVOID! gave me my first snd only C at CSULB he mumbles the whole lecture, attendance is MANDATORY, his tests are based mainly on lecture notes that have nothing to do with the book and even though he curves it's still pretty hard to pass, For the 3rd test you need to read this 2% Solution book that is super hard to understand, I'd take someone else
HORRIBLE. i felt like i was in Polsci 550 not 100. SUPER boring. talks from beginning to end. tests are incredibly hard. only good thing is he curves tests and no hwk. 3 tests + Final, 10 quizzes (unannouunced) + 1 paper. would NOT recommend unless you want to be stressing. Im an average B student and this was my ONLY F class.
I like Dennis, but dont like his teaching style. He LOVES statistics, and it dictates everything about his classes. This is his flaw, he seems totally unconcerned with his students learning of the material, as long as the grades meet the bell curve its all good in his book. Hardly the worst teacher i have taken, but far from the best.
OHmyGAWD do NOT TAKE THIS GUY! He mumbles about nonsense & it makes it excruciatingly confusing, esp since politics & history are confusing subjects in general for me. Book is interesting to read but time-consuming & the tests aren't really based on it anyway but that's how I learn. Tests/quizzes are super hard. It's my only bad grade!!! ):
He mumbles a LOT, so classes are spent trying to understand what he says. Classes are mandatory because 60% of tests are from lecture notes and he has pop quizzes every week. I had taken a government class prior to this class and he only made everything way more confusing than necessary. Avoid if you want to pass Poli Sci!!
Yes, he does do a bit of mumbling, I'll admit. But that doesn't change the fact that he's very dedicated to helping you succeed, and would be more than happy to repeat or clarify anything you may not have heard. He gives you his home phone number to call him for whatever you don't understand. He's very helpful, and that's what I want from a teacher
He is a really good professor. I cant believe some of the things students are posting on here. If you cant get a good grade in this class then the fault is your own. Study harder and pay more attention. Welcome to adulthood people.
Easily one the worst teachers I've had. Tests are stupidly hard. I'm not sure if most of the stuff he blabbers about is even political science. I really did learn more in my AP Civics class. The exam averages are all very low. I still managed to pull of a B though. Avoid this guy like the plague.
Good teacher. Tests you constantly, so you're not going to be surprised by your final grade. You need to show up for every class. I wish he would speak up more. He can talk quietly, so he can be tough to understand. He works hard to bring in different perspectives.
Worst teacher ever. The test is unreasonable. There is no office hours, you can only call him. Calling him is unless, talking in the phone is hard and confusing. If you are not a political science major, don't take him
AVOID!! This class was so hard. We had to read about 70 pages a week. quiz every week. Dr. Dennis mumbles so much, and he is very hard to understand. Terrible lecturer. He is helpful sometimes, but he is mostly a jerk about it. I have a high GPA, and his 15-page term paper was very difficult!! He should not work here anymore.
Absolutely the worst professor. He gives you no instructions on what you're suppose to write on the essay and the lectures do not have anything to do with the reading or the class. It's political parties! You learn that for 3 weeks and then he goes off ranting about other things that he teaches EVERY polisci class(even 100). AVOID all his classes!
If you can avoid this professor please do so!,, he mumbles his way through class, quizzes you on articles you must take every week worth 10 points. Its 4 test plus paper and quizzes. His test are tricky! If your the type to study really hard then ull handle but overal preety hard and boring class!
Terrible. Worst teacher / class I've taken in college. The entire course is based around his personal, liberal views. The course should be called PoSci 100: Chris Dennis' Political Opinion. I learned absolutely nothing about the basics of Political Science.
not difficult, he just expects a lot for a 3 unit general ed class. u can pretty much get away with memorizing notes and reading the book, the only reason to show up for class is the quizzes, since he does post the slides online. but I found myself and usually a few other people falling asleep every lecture. I wouldn't recommend him.
I would avoid this professor at all cost. His lectures are not interesting at all and he has a low voice (probably because he's older). I barely attended class and I just depended on the book and my S.I class. He curves A LOT and drops the lowest exam (except final exam). Besides that, expect a lot of nappers!
Expects you to do a lot of reading but if you do his question and weekly assignments and do his paper step by step how he ask you to do you should get a decent grade you only have one test the final and he curves the whole class difficult to understand goes off on RANDOM-STORIES during his lecture but overall a decent person
Alright teacher, lectures are extremely boring though. Powepoints help a lot. An ok teacher!
This is a challenging course so if you're looking for an easy A this is not it. The course consists of 3 exams,1 final, and quizzes. BUY THE BOOK!! Most of the exams material comes DIRECTLY from the text!! Again, this is a challenging course (I got a B) so be prepared for tough material.
He's a dinosaur. He's really old and mumbles sometimes. He's a nice guy though. There are three tests and a final along with a paper and random quizzes. The class was pretty boring, but bearable. I've heard other professors are better though.
Attendance is a must! Though he posts the Powerpoint slides online, to understand the material AT ALL, you need to attend class. Professor is a super nice guy, but a tough grader! Tests are impossibly hard, but he does curve them. Make sure to do all of the readings. I'm an A student,I worked/studied really hard in this class and ended up with a B+
He is honestly the worst professor i have ever had. He is incredibly one-sided and confusing.
He is ABSOLUTELY the WORST professor!!!!!!! The material is SO confusing. The course pack that he provides is written without ANY space at all. Its like a giant 100 page essay! Super boring and utterly confusing. Don't take him , even if he is your last resort. Yup , that bad !
He cares about you passing, really. His tests are graded on curves and one of them is dropped. Although, he goes over too much at once. I found his class overwhelming. I find Political Science interesting, but now... please no. I'll learn this stuff on my own, at my own pace.
This was by far the worst professor I have ever had. He does not explain anything and the material on the tests has no relation to the material on the power points. He mumbles when he speaks and you can not hear a word he says. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!
Dr. Dennis is a very nice guy. Yes he mumbles a little but sit in the front row and that won't be a problem. You will basically read the book cover to cover and will have quizzes every week. The quizzes aren't hard. Gives you his phone number to call if you're confused. Overall he's a decent professor, willing to help and tells you whats expected.
Dr. Dennis is a very kind man he cares about his students. Also, he keeps regular office hours if you need help. He's clearly more intelligent than 99.9% of us, but he never speaks in a way that you cannot understand. He's not a snob or show off, but he could be if he wanted to, because is IS that smart. I will take him again, for my Masters.
In his 326 and 322 class right now. He is the worst professor ever. I didn't think there was anyone worse besides Leiter but he beat him. His term papers will be the death of me literally. I have to both and am SERIOUSLY wishing to die. DONT TAKE HIM YOU WILL BE SUICIDAL ONCE THE PAPER COMES. HE IS ALSO BORING AND UNCLEAR AND RAMBLES.
The subject is not hard, but the way the class is laid out makes difficult to understand what is expected. His lectures are given in mumbles, and he speaks the entire length of the class. Don't skip Wednesday for his passfail quizzes. Only plus is that tests are easy. Wouldn't recommend. If you have to take him then good luck!
HIs lectures are pretty long and boring honestly(I almost fell asleep a few times). At least he provides the powerpoint and a course pack that somewhat helps you but does not really match what on the test much. He is happy to help if you actually bother to call him though. Hardly anyone actually reads the textbook for the assigned readings .
Worst professor ever! Most students were on their phones or doing something else on their computer
Not clear or specific at all. His course pack is cluttered and offers no help. He's a bit hard to understand because he doesn't really speak slowly or clearly. Gives pop quizzes once a week and they're most based on the readings. His "term paper" is unreasonably hard and the course pack makes it even more confusing.
If you look over the Courepack at the beginning of the semester you're fine. Keep screenshots of the reading schedule and study guide. Everyone who complains that the test are totally different didn't use the study guide because they answers are directly from there. It's not an easy class, but he's got various options to help you pass.
Grades on a curve and will give 100% pop quiz scores to students who don't skip class. Aside from all the reading and pop quizzes, he drops 3 worst scores, and is extremely helpful by email with questions on the outline term paper, solving data, sample term paper, & final term paper. Lots of writing. Semester is not over but so far so good.
Im taking both of his classes at the same time 322 & 326. Hes a great professor. He speaks pretty fast, but just shoutout sorry what was that and he'll slow down and say it again no problem. He's very nice too and is always laughing and talking to students. his lectures are pretty boring though, but hes not a hard teacher at all. i'd take him again
I wouldn't recommend this class to anyone. I didn't feel like I was taking a 100 level class, I studied for this class and felt it was overwhelming. He's a nice man but this class is just confusing and harder than poli sci 100 should be.
Helpful and a pretty good lecturer, though sometimes he waits a bit long for students to respond which can slow things down. I thought the second book was excellent, but thought he should have assigned The Party Decides. The class was generally pretty easy just go to class and you should be able to get an A, I missed half semester and passed.
A nice guy, but his lectures are totally confusing. He doesn't teach core concepts, so if you're not into politics at all, don't take him. Tests are not that difficult if you answer all the questions from the study guide, but quizzes are totally random.
Dennis is an all-around good guy. He is very accessible, and he even gives his personal phone number in case you have questions. He sometimes struggles to communicate clearly and concisely. The term paper is a huge part of the class, so don't blow it off. There is a weekly pop quiz, so make sure to do the readings.
He curves grades so much. Lectures are helpful but if you don't read the book you won't get all the material. This isn't an easy A. You don't ever know you're grade because its all based on averages, so your chances of passing are good.
He's overall a very good person. His lectures have a lot of examples and his powerpoints are just outlines. You gotta read the book. I find it hard to comprehend what he's saying in class. You're probably better off reading the book.
While I think Prof. Dennis is kind, it can be difficult to understand what he is saying sometimes, so I wouldn't recommend sitting in the back. He grades based off 3 exams and weekly quizzes (each are worth 10 points). You really need to read the book to study, for me personally, his lectures and Powerpoints did little to help.
