this guy is great i think. His tests are from the books and notes though. pay attention you have to attend class, but this guy keeps you awake.
You must attend all classes and do the reading to do well in this class. But really its not hard to do because he is interesting, and he also skips boring stuff. Take him if you can!
A nice guy. You MUST attend all of his class and READ the text in order to pass. Gives 10 quizzes, an exam , midterm, and a final. 3 papers. Grades papers based on grammer. Easy A IF you pass everything.
Denny is extremly intelligent, fair and helpful. You have about 3 short papers, a midterm, a final and 10 quizes. 7 and above you get a point, you can get up to 10 points. Go to class and read and there will be no need to worry about the tests and quizes. Great guy, very nice and funny. Take him!
He was a good teacher but the class was kinda boring and you have to read alot... he gives about 10 or more pages of reading every night which gets annoying if you fall behind
This guy is the worst. Avoid him like the plauge. This is suppose to be an easy prerequisite and it turned out to be so much work that I dropped it after the midterm. He needs to get a life!
He takes this to seriously, if he's not at a religious meeting, he's talking about it. Tests are extremly hard and he is a very hard grader..dont take his class!
gotta luv dis guy hez madd crzy: kentucky fried jesus..lol.hes alot of work but if ur up fo' it then dun hesitate, cuz ull learn alot n u get what u earn in his class.u work hard ull get over A-..memeorize stuff and ull b aight. the quizzes keep u updated in class...he makes u do a book review tho!
Great teacher. Just come to class and listen to his lectures. He enters a few jokes here or there to liven the mood. Funny Guy. His papers are easy.
Denny is how a prof is supposed to be... but he can be very statistical with grading kids. i dunno he is pretty tough at that but his teaching can be interesting
Denny is De Man! Any update or change in the class is emailed to you, he emails to keep in touch and keep you up to date on grades. Reports are easy, just dont plagerize. Quizes are easy if you do you readings, tests are easy as he outlines questions. Some work, easier A. Interesting and helpful
Denny is hard if u dont study. to get an A u gotta avg over 93 in ur work. he gave sum E.C. though which helped. ull learn alot in his class and enjoy his cheesy humor. at the beginning of the semester he used to say "okay" alot, 163 times according to a friend's tally, LOL.
Denny is the man. I read the homeworks, and did his reports. His tests are exactly from his tests and lectures. He is anal about everything. You need to have 10 quizzes, and even if he is absent he will give you some work. Talking to him after class is good, he remembers it. I got an A.
He is a cool guy but very anal with the final grade. Gives quiz almost every other day which may be able to pass w/o reading text if u take good notes. 3 papers, 10 quizzes, 2 tests and a final. Breaks down work to much and unecessarily. Condense the work Denny and lighten up w/ the grades.
Do not take this teacher if you want the easy way out. He is a very hard grader. His leactures are interesting he knows a lot about his story. I wish I dropped the class when I had the chance to.
DENNY GIVES A LOT OF WORK. AS LONG AS YOU DO THEM YOU'LL GET A B. IF YOU WORK VERY VERY HARD AND READ A LOT YOULL GET AN A. IF YOURE LAZY, YOULL FAIL. YOU HAVE TO READ THE WHOLE TEXTBOOK AND SOME PARTS OF THE BIBLE. I HAD TO WORK MY ASS OFF FOR HIS CLASS TO GET A B+. BUTS HES VERY NICE AND HELPS.
Denny is a very good professor. You just have to apply yourself. His quizzes are from the readings he gives and the midterm and final are cumulative...so if you dont know what you're doing throughout the semester...you don't have a chance...but overall Denny is a really good teacher.
good teacher tests r easy all what u have to do is read the text pages he assigns and ull be fine
Come on people. If you take good notes and do your readings this class is E-Z. I actually liked this class, when I thought I would hate it. I got an A- in this class without too much trouble. You actually learn stuff in this class... imagine that?
Drop this class it is horrible, he needs to get a life, way to much work for a core..tests are hard all fill in no multiple choice..he sux!!
massive amounts of note taking, no multiple choice ( or very little). Lots of readings require if u cant keep up you'll fail. i got an F in his class ... despite i put in my BEST effort and im an A type student. Hes no joke, hes way to hard, and needs to lighten up a lil, DROP HIM!!!
The exams are extremely hard, quizzes every other day, lots of readings, notes are 3 pages long. The people who gave him good ratings are the ones that are very knowledgeable about the Bible and Christianity. For the rest of us, his class is a easy F if you don't know much about either one.
worst class i have ever taken, i have never dropped a class before i took him. he doesnt care and is soooo boring and lame, no extra credit ...DONT TAKE!
Do the readings and listen in class half the time and ull get no less then a B. Pretty much every assignment has a point value for ex. a quiz is worth 1 point while a test is worth 15, they all add up and the most point u can get is 102. only prob with this is its easy to lose points
I would definetly take this professor again of I could. Most think that passing is impossible, but the quizzes every week make the midterm an final so much easier. A lot of work but it pays off in the end i got a B+. Has excellent preparation and cares about his work. Great Guy.
quiz almost every other day, if u dont come to class u get a zero, midterm, 2 papers, cumulative final, in class assingments, LOTS OF WORK!!! beware , i would never recommend him, hes HARD and talks forever, by the end of class my hand always hurts from writing! notes ..hes VERY anal about everythin
i totally disagree. sure, his class does require work but he is one of the best teachers in SJU. he knows soo much about religion. you'll defintely learn a lot. if you keep up with the work, you will do fine. he is a must if your one of those that want to learn.

All you have to do is the readings from the textbook and internet. Copy the notes that he puts on the screen (power point). Tests are cumulative. He gives lots of quizzes and summaries. He uses the message board and group assignments. Its easy but alot of work. You wont pass if you dont do the work though. Half the test is MC the other is SA.
Very good teacher, smart man, but the work just isn't worth it for a core class. youll learn theo but its not worth the time and studying you hvae to put in. ton of reading every night and then a quiz the next day. not worth it, you'll learn theology but its not worth the effort. hes a great teacher and very fair but too much work every night.
i dont know why they put the good comments first on this wedsite,, that made me take this guy.i will tell if for real this class isnt worth your time, there is to much reading, there are 2 oral projects which you have to hand in a 6 page essay about it, also a single 6pger due the end of the year,WARNING DONT TAKE HIM!!!TAKE dr. Connolly-weinert.
you would think that as a young professor he'd be somewhat cool, but he's just a booksmart ... that needs to relax
Not only does he speak to students like there 5 b/c he has his PhD, but someone needs to remind him that this is a 2500 series course & not a thesis for a MA program. Theres a quiz essay & 50 read pages for each class, midterm, cummaltive final, 2group projects, 2group papers & term paper
Not only am i a theology major but denny's class requires double the work and is much harder than my seminar 4990 course. DO NOT TAKE Denny's classes... he walks all over the students
Unless ur a theo major, DO NOT TAKE THIS GUY! 2 much work in 2 little time. The (literally) 5 minute quizzes on 30+ page readings ur reqd to do every night is his way of taking attendence. In addition, 5 group discussion essays, 4 reflective papers, 10+ online postings in essay form, 3 In-Class summaries, a midterm, CUM-Final & he's extremely anal.
OMG...Do not take him, unless your really into theology. He has alot to teach, treats you like a 5 year old but expect the work from someone in grad school.
One of the best professor I had in St.Johns. He seems to be hard because of the amount of work he gives, but what he does he doesn't give you a chance to procastinate. Instead of reading 300pgs at the night before the midterm or final, you already read everything for the quizzes, so the only thing you have to do is review. He's helpful if you need.
Excellent Professor. He works you hard but it's all worth it. Professor Denny knows his stuff.
DONT TAKE HIM... TERRIBLE
DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!...the way he grades is backwards and he makes the class alot harder then it needs to be...terrible teacher!!
He is a great professor. His course requires work, a lot of reading, a few quizzes, writing assignments. If you do the work, the class is not bad. He provides students with extra credit opportunities and is always willing to listen to student questions. It is a university class, you cannot expect to earn a degree without any effort, major or core.
he's really good. Although he gives a lot of notes they're clear and understandable. It may seem like he has alot of work for you to do during the semester but its not that bad. Keeps you involved in the lecture and he's funny. Overall good professor.
give him a break he's new and not that bad and besides how intresting can history be? he tries at least
HE IS KNOWS HIS STUFF BUT HIS CLASS IS TO HARD FOR AN UNDERGRADUATE COURSE, YOU SHOULD TAKE ANOTHER PROFESSOR, DONT THINK ABOUT BRAVING THIS CLASS. BUT IF YOU DO, MAKE SURE YOU READ EVERYTHING TWICE TO DO ANY CLOSE TO GOOD.
he is simply too hard, too much work, and his grading sucks, very hard grader, if u r taking his class make sure u r a very good writer caz he actully grades u on the grama and that type of stuff more than evaluation of the paper, think twice before u take him, his quizes are extremely hard. Tho, he does know wat he is talking about ,and he is smar
He's a good professor and knows his stuff. However, if you are like me, a Tobin student, and you are taking 18 credits, his work is out of control. Expect a quiz and over 70 pages of reading a week. He is extremely clear in his expectations. Theo majors or St. John's college students, take him. Tobin students, avoid.
He is horrible! He expects too much from his students. If you are like me work and school 18 credits and working part time - don't take him! He is horrible and its just not worth it!
He def. gives a lot of reading and there's always something that will be graded due or given at almost every class meeting, but they are all on the syllabus. Quizzes are easy and from readings. All notes on ppt slides&posted online! I would recommend. As long as you do all that is required, you'll be good! I got an A! Def. take him!!
Unlike many other professors @ SJU, Denny is clear w/ his expectations and grade breakdown. He was so organized he made a 3hr class just fly by! Reading is required but it pays off in the end b/c it makes the quizzes and papers so easy to do once you read the material. Great Professor!!
Perhaps the most intelligent man I've ever met. If you want to know greatness, come to one of his classes. And he's smokin' hot!!!
cuz I'm not into religious stuff, I thought this class wud suck.. but Denny's a really smart dude who made me actuwally like reading. I've ner been so inspired to study hard and make something of myself. Mebbe I will change my major. Take thi class and it might change your life. He gives a lotta reading but he's a great speaker and good lookie
He is the worst professor at SJU! He doesn't care about his students and will fail you with no problem. He gives way too much work as if this is your only class. It's really hard to keep up with him because he doesn't give you a chance to grasp the material. He needs to get a life. I'm telling you- Don't take him!
his grading system is very detailed. EVERYTHING COUNTS!!! there are weekly message board postings and quizes, there are 3 group presentations as well as a paper midterm and final. this class is a lot of work. and he says he treats it as an elective not as a core and he isn't lying
denny is actually one of the most intelligent professors ive ever come across. theres lots of quizzes, but its good because his tests come from the quizzes. the reading is alot.but it all pays off.EXCELLENT profesor =)
I don't know what everyone is talking about! SO WHAT he's smart!! He carries on the class as if you have a degree in theology. He is NOT helpful at all and cuts you NO slack. No extra credit and entirely TOO MUCH WORK! He's horrible!!!
Clear in his lectures. Always stay alert. He's very composed and organized as a professor, but he sometimes allows for some joking around and great open discussions for his seminars. Easy quizzes if you do the readings! WARNING: A LOT OF WORK! Do not take him if you are an extreme procrastinator. Overall, he knows what he's talking about. really.
this professor is not as bad as he seems. the 1st day of class, u might think its way overwhelming but it really isnt. Quick 3 hrs. and although he gives weekly quizzes, its a good way to prep for final. Im slow and i still got an A in that class. You jsut gotta show ur effort and youll be fine. I totally recommend him !
He's a nice guy, VERY smart, helpful. The only bad thing about the class is he gives a TON of work. Online Quiz and In-class Quiz once a week pretty much, 3 5pg. group papers, regular message board postings...It's not too bad with the quizzes because he makes his tests and final from them...he's extremely smart though, and is super nice.
A great professor, gives 2 quizzes a week, but there very easy. Its not a difficult class at all..just
Great professor! Very smart, knows whats going on in the world. HW is reading. Quizzes each class are not hard if you do homework, go to lecture, and look over vocab. Group papers are simple, and can be put together by just combining everyones work, make up 21% of grade. Midterm and final are okay, just study quizzes. If you have him, you're fine.
I don't know what all you folks are dissin' Denny for... he makes you work, that's his job. He's a really good professor, and at the end of the class you have actually learned something. He's also quite the hottie...
okay listen, this guy is no joke, he's here to teach and get stuff done, so if you are looking for an easy A don't take this class, it requires you to learn the material rather then memorizing it before the test, and if you miss class it will mess you up and put you behind but he teaches very clearly and will help you as long as you show initiative
Denny is a very good professor overall. He claimsto make student work for their A's, but it's not so hard. Attend class (awake), complete the majority of assignments, and talk in his group sessions and you'll do fine. Willing to help and amiable.
not an easy class, have to work hard to have a shot of getting an A. Too many quizzes. Would not recommend.

theology is supposed to be an easy class and taking him is the best way to make it hard
very good prof. and lectures are interesting. gives lots of quizzes but half are online and open book with xtra credit. If you do the reading and come to class, it?s hard to get less than a B, but if you don?t read and skip a lot of classes you?re in trouble. A guy in my group missed most of the classes and failed.
really great guy. very thorough in his teaching. never fails to answer any question in simple terms. easy multiple choice quizzes and readings that u can skim through and still pass. Learned a lot of stuff i never knew and he shows a movie clip before evry class, great visuals really fun class, and a funny guy
I did not like this class. There is no reason for a core theology class to be this hard. however, he's a funny guy, and he does try to help.
Really not so bad. Do the assignments and contribute to the group paper (which is simple) and you'll do absolutely fine. He speaks passionately about Theology which may not interest everyone, but he isn't overbearing wtih it. Shows videos, always cracking dry jokes. Helpful if you ask him questions in & out of class. Don't run away from this one.
runs a tight ship.
He's actually quite decent but does take advantage that theology is core... If ur on board for a ridiculous amout of weekly work then this is ur guy.. theres altleast a weekly message board topic, in class quiz, and online quiz in addition to others so if u will enjoy a ridiculous amount of work then register..otherwise.. he is kinda funny
dr denny is a cool guy. hes extremely helpful but there is a decent amount of work each week. its easy and simple to do good if u keep up with it. he is funny and the videos keep things interesting. great prof. a little tough. i recommend him
He has a guide so you can figure out your grade. Honestly, as long as the work is done you should be fine. Just don't slack on quizzes, when you add them up they're worth a lot.
this isn't a class you can half-ass your way through. yes, it is a lot of work for a core but people who complain should be reminded that we're in college and not everything will be handed to us. in-class quizzes every fri and online quizzes and reading assignments due every mon. funny, fair, and a competent prof but he'll make you work for it.
Very hard course. 300 word posts, online quiz and in class quiz every week. Three exams and one group 25 minute presentation. He introduces the class with "Jesus movies" at the beginning of the class while he writes notes on the board. He looks/acts extremely weird and gives boring jokes when he feels he is losing the attention span of the class
Gives a lot of work, but def worth it. Learned a lot.
This class is extremely intense. Word of advice, if you don't have time to always read for his class take 20quizes.Do not take him. I dedicated so much of my time for his class and neglected my other classes because if I didn't I would have ended up with an F. I worked my ass off and I was point .50 from getting an A. He takes off too much points a
He assigns alot of readings for the quizes. However, as long as you keep up its not hard. Even if you don't do that well on exams and quizes he gives out lots of extra credit opportunities. He grades papers pretty fairly. Overall not hard to get an A as long as you put in the time. Extra credit helps too
if you want a class that you have to work this is the class you should take not an easy class but he really knows his stuff
One of the best professors I've ever had. Don't take him if you want an easy A. If you want to be challenged and feel accomplished at the semester, he is the best
Not an EASY class at all. But Prof Denny is very knowledgeable and helpful. Gives extra credit assignments for 10 points in the final grade. Lot of readings and work. Reads every small part of ur papers. Gives 3 essay exams 7 quizzes 5 short papers a 15 min presentation and a 7 page term paper in addition to his seminars. A lot of work to do.
This guy is strict on attendance and participation. I had the flu and had to give him a copy of the ER report as proof. Take this class only if you want to be challenged; if you want an easy a look else where. You will learn a lot if you do the work but there is a ton of work to do. Assigns a 10 page interview paper (but you can make them up)
He's a good professor in the sense that his material is really solid and he can elaborate. His attendance is mandatory, does not allow texting and makes you submit your notes when use your laptop. He's a hard person when you argue though. He likes to get HIS point across.
He is a great professor if you're major is theology. If it's not DO NOT take his class, I had a hard major as it is but he wanted five different textbooks and a lot of essays. He seems like a nice guy but there are easy theology professors for the people who just want to get the requirement out of the way.
Denny is literally the best. Hes extremely clear & incredibly thorough. He emailed the syllabus before class began & it was so specific I thought he was gonna be crazy but hes awesome. He gives a lot of extra credit & hes really fair. Take good notes, go to class, read the syllabus, & youll do great. I wish he taught all my classes, honestly
Denny is seriously an amazing professor. He's quirky and makes class interesting, he loves open discussion and hearing other people's opinions. Definitely isn't the stereotypical close-minded theology prof. He gives a lot of extra credit opportunities and final exam exemptions. One of my favorite professors at SJU!
He was a very quirky guy but that did not make up for the work load. I would only recommend him if your major is theology. He is not an easy A. DO NOT TAKE HIM TO GET THE REQUIREMENT. You have to attend class and get 5 different textbooks.
He wants to squeeze in too much work in a short period of time. Unfair grading. Stay away, will damage your GPA
Professor Denny has a very smart sense of humor, extremely good lecture skills, and a very well-planned syllabus. If you do all the assignments and go to the many extra credit sessions, you don't have to take the final
This man is seriously one of the best professors at St. John's. He is the epitome of a great teacher--he utilizes powerpoints the right way, he emphasizes discussion in class, he knows exactly what he's talking about, and he wants you to succeed. And he gives so much extra credit. If you don't get an A, that's your fault. Love this guy!
He's very organized with his lectures and grading, which is really good, but the man gives WAY TOO MUCH WORK. If you are a theology major, then he's great and you will learn a lot, but if you're not then this class just isn't worth the time and effort. Way too many readings that you can't skip because there are quizzes every week. I hate this clas
Decent teacher but so much work. Several readings and an online quiz every week. Grades very tough on essays. GPA killer. Don't Recommend unless you enjoy this subject.
Fantastic and work intensive class - expect work about 3-5 hr/wk How to get an A: 1. SEE HIM at office HRS*** 2. Start papers and test prep EARLY** 3. Do the reading - skim occasionally but be thorough*** 4. Take good notes and don't miss class*** 5. PROOFREAD and use Writing Center** 6. Take brief breaks while reading to mentally review**
Work intensive class, but very manageable if you STAY ON TOP OF IT. Don't run from the class, honestly it is pretty easy to get an A in if you just do the work.
Lectures drag on. They're very boring and he speaks blandly. Lots of reading twice a week out of two textbooks. Ridiculous amount of work for a required course. I was having more trouble in this class then my science classes. Stay away if you're not a theology major!!!
Ugh Okay. Few things. This guy is the teacher you think of in Catholic Schools except he's a college professor. He's very organized but the work-load is ridiculous. If you show up to all the classwe and do all the assignments, there should be no issue getting an A; however, the workload and the way the class drags on is very discouraging
Took this class because I needed to fill up credits, He is very lecture heavy there's 2 online quizzes every week, about 6 in class quizzes, 3 exams, and a couple papers. if you are super interested in religion and u like to be challenged, take this class. But if you want an easy A, STAY AWAY FROM THIS CLASS.
DO NOT TAKE HIM. Save yourself and your GPA because hes a pain. A textbook & Bible are needed for this class. Expect to have a quiz every time you enter class on the readings he assigned. Readings may consist up to 60-100 pages. (Both Textbook and Bible passages) If youre not willing to do the work, dont take him.
DO NOT TAKE. Only cares about theology majors, exams are extremely specific and include latin phrases that are not found in the textbook or lectures. Believes his course should be as difficult if not more difficult because it is a "require course". Online quizzes, in class quizzes, group projects every week, exams monthly. 0/10
Professor Denny may be the worst professor that I have taken so far. I understand that every class should be taken seriously, however this is a CORE class. He takes it to an extreme with the amount of readings, WEEKLY group assignments & ridiculous essay rubrics. Stay away if your a science major & need to manage your time on more important classes
Do not take this class unless you're into the theology. His content is extremely lecture heavy, with quizzes and test often relating back to the specific lectures. All the quizzes require you to read the readings thoroughly. All in all, he was not a bad professor, just a hard one.
I took him in my freshman year, and he gave me a C+. You have to be really interested in Religion and pour all your time into his class to get a good grade. The only positive thing I can say about him is that he is not mean.
Hes a genuinely amazing professor. Yes, he gives a lot of work, but its not hard work (except for the essays that make you think). Hes super approachable and helpful if you take the initiative to go to him. Hes passionate about his work and that kind of energy is lacking in many professors. Other raters probably just wanted a COMPLETELY FREE A.
Yeah don't take him. Gives a ton of work and it is hard. His tests are ridiculously long (one test is 80 fill in the blank for only 8% of your grade). I do not recommend unless you love religion
No zooms, just assigned readings and writing. This class was just okay but compared to my other asynchronous online classes I've taken during covid there was really a lack of communication between the teachers and each student. And I know its asynchronous but it devoid of any feeling of school, felt like a mandatory tutor or something. Not fun.
Get ready for A LOT of reading in this course. If you do not like to read, you should 100% not take this course. Weekly quizzes can sometimes come unexpectedly if you don't look at the syllabus. Also, this professor is a very hard grader. Stay Away from this course/professor if looking for a THEO 2000 course.
Mandatory attendance in every class. The in-person ones were very hard and he requires you to get 7 questions out of 10 correct to get a 100%, otherwise, you'll get a 50%. Seminars can be very annoying as no matter how much you seem to contribute to the conversation you can never get a perfect score. Multiple 1500 word essays throughout the course
Denny believes students can miss class and work because you don't need a 100 to receive an A. Although this sounds great, lots of information from his lectures are on his quizzes. Make sure to make some friends in his class so you can find out what you missed if you were absent. Denny won't tell you what you missed. Avoid Denny if you can.
It wasn't extremely hard or easy. There's a lot of reading. He gives 10-question quizzes every week. Only 7 right to get full points (3/3), but if less you'll get half. 40-page readings every week and seminars which aren't that bad. You can definitely find easier professors but if you end up taking his class, it isn't that bad.
Class goes from 1 to 100 really quick so be ready. Participation based class seminars every week and irritating online assignments to go with it. Quizzes are also a common occurrence, almost every class. Material on quizzes ranges from his syllabus to what was covered during that class to a book passage read 4 weeks ago. Write down everything!
So, here's the bottom line. If you do not like reading, do not take this class. You will have to read 40-50 pages of textbook each week for material that is asked on weekly quizzes. 2 1500-word essays throughout the semester.
This class is very fast paced from day one. There are assignments that require lots of reading. Reading consists up to forty pages of reading in order to pass the quizzes. Quizzes are given weekly and have certain details from the readings and lectures. Good note taking is required. There are also weekly discussions/assignments. Take another prof.
don't take him.
He's nice! There's lots of reading. Attendence isn't mandatory, but you'll miss a lot. Quizzes and discussion posts based off group discussions every week (one or the other). Quizzes are open notebook and off readings + lecture. Take digital notes and ctrl + f through it. 2 essays, weren't worth a major part of the grade. Final is like a quiz.
Lots of readings and quizzes, but engaging class discussions. Use unstuck study and focus to do well. Not the easiest, but manageable with effort.
assigned so much readings and classes were lecture-heavy but he wouldn't post the slides. there were weekly quizzes either online or in person and quite difficult unless you study the readings and lecture notes hard. wouldn't take again.
