I can honestly say that before taking his class I had an big anxiety of speaking in front of others. But as the semester went on his lectures became much more clear and to the point. He has you write a lot in terms of turning outlines along with your speeches, but in the end he is a great teacher.

Great teacher - very clear on what he wants to see in an outline and hear in a speech, and he grades well as long as you follow the guidlines. You can only miss 3 hours of class before your grade is affected though, and you'll have to learn to have an innate sense of timing so you don't speak too long and loose points. Great teacher for speech especially if you hate public speaking.He's very funny and interesting. He misses class a lot and lets class out early when its not as speech day. The important thing for the speech is timing and not reading from notecards and do the outline,its a big part of the grade. You need the book for the final but thats about it.

Professor De Surra is great and his class is easy. He is picky on the attendance, so if you are one of those people who usually leaves class early or hardly bothers showing up, then DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS!

Great public speaking teacher, has a great attitude and is very funny. Just be on time and eveything is all good, there is an open book test at the end which is very easy.

I took the 8 week course and if you don't like stress then don't take this class. I found the class challenging but it was a good challenge. Although this class is very easy, it is very time consuming. You use a lot of paper and the drafts take forever to do. To get an A, you must always be there, follow exactly what he asks, and never go over the time limit for speeches. You get docked a lot of points if you are over for time limit for speeches and for tardiness or absences.

Chris is so awesome! probably one of the funniest professors i've had.it was a lot of work but if you really pay attention and take notes he explains what you need to do very well. some of the outlines are really time consuming.he's great, i didn't think he taught enough about the actual speaking part.mostly on how to make the outlines.

So Chris was born to teach public speaking. He's been doing it for decades, yet he's outgoing and consistently enthusiastic. I spent about 30% of the class laughing in lecture. This class can cause a lot of anxiety for people, myself included, but Chris will get you through it. You'll come out a lot better on the other end when you're done.

He always gave really good feedback on our speeches. He was also very easy to connect outside of class. I emailed him and received a response within hours. He is super funny, and tells great stories. He is super approachable. He swears a lot, which might not be okay for some, but I didn't mind. Attendance does matter. If you try, you will pass.

If you do what you are told to do for each of the speech assignments you will get an easy A, all you have to do is just put in some effort and you can actually enjoy this class!

He is absolutely hilarious! He grades you on Attendance, speech outlines, speech, and your final exam (open Book). Super easy final just note all the pages he tells you to read from the syllabus. You will have to do about 4 speeches and the research paper is the hardest/most weighted one. Work hard on that and you should get an A.

If you are scared of public speaking just like I am or many people out there are, TAKE THIS GUY. He taught you the skills so that you can stand in front of others and talk all day long. It gets to a point where I am so bored of public speaking because it is no longer challenging. He's HUGElarious. I come to class everyday even though it's 7 am.

Chris is one of the funniest professors I have ever been with. Overall an easy class to succeed in if you don't have issues getting to class on time. I was late to class on a day where our outline was due (for the largest speech we had) and I was marked down 25% overall from the speech. Other than that he's amazing. FYI he will troll you.

You have to turn off your phone when you come in the door. You cant say bless you if someone sneezes during a speech. You have to have Microsoft word for all outlines.

I took prof Chris because of all the awesome reviews I read however none of them had an online experience with him. I would not recommend him in an online form, he is too strict on the littlest things like perfect camera positioning and lighting which affects your grade. Funny and class is mostly enjoyable, just too strict imo.

I loved taking this class and Chris is absolutely hilarious; there's no doubt that you'll enjoy having him as a professor! He's super clear on his expectations and gives great feedback. Online is hard for everyone, but he made the best of it. 10/10 would take again.

I really have so many wonderful things I could say about Chris! He is very clear on his expectations, greatly values his students, and has funny stories to share almost every class. If you are fearful of public speaking, I guarantee that his class will make you feel much more comfortable. I completely recommend taking him, you will learn a lot.

I took this class during Spring 2023. Chris is so so funny and I laughed so much during this class. As long as you do exactly what he says to do, you'll be fine. He even gives you ideas and examples of what it your assignments should look like. Totally worth it and an easy A

Great professor, but tough class with constant work. Needs time management skills definitely.

Chris's class was by far the best class I took at occ! He is so awesome and wants you to succeed. It definitely took some effort, but my public speaking skills immensely improved. My two pieces of advice for this class is to take good notes on lecture days when he explains speech outlines and try to make it to every class.

Best professor I've ever had, as well as the first class I was excited to show up to every time. Chris is so much fun and even makes his lectures on speech outlines entertaining to listen to. If you have perfect attendance you can even skip the final. Overall highly recommend, a character like him doesn't come around very often.

Great professor! Lectures are boring but very informative. Chris looks out for his students and sets them on a road for success. Learnt and improved so much in my public speaking:)

A must-take class! I always looked forward to his lectures and learning how to structure my presentations. I laughed at all his stories and he made it feel comfortable to do speeches in front of your class. Not an easy class as you will be doing research and constructing speeches but you feel rewarded at the end. TAKE THIS CLASS!!!

Chris is incredibly fun and good at his job and hilarious. My problem was that for every speech he required an outline that was SO specific in its format, and it was hard to keep up with it. I got 95% on every speech itself, but the outlines weighed my grade down to a B, which is bs since he doesn't even grade them himself

Chris's CMST110 class is a must-take! He's an engaging professor who makes lectures fun and helps you improve your public speaking skills. unstuck AI was a lifesaver for preparing speeches.

If y'all are planning to take public speaking for credits take this man. Don't let the syllabus and rules of this course scare you! Definitely focus on the outlines bc that's worth more than delivery of speech! He's very funny and very relatable! For me there was a total of 5 speeches, one of them being online! Everyone is always nervous! Don't be!

Definitely take chris for comms. During spring he has to take some class time off to lead speech and debate team so that means we get time off too! Don't take the outline lightly it carries most of your grade. Assignments are due at 8pm most of the time and quizzes are to do at home which is a score.

if you're nervous about taking public speaking and seeing all the bad ratings under chris don't be. If people are giving bad ratings it's prob bc they didn't bother showing up or putting in any effort. keep in mind this class is lecture based if you show up you'll be fine! I was scared of coms but not with chris! hw is lightwork!

Highly recommend for every OCC student! To build confidence, overcome stage fright & learn proper format and delivery. Chris is very funny and down to earth. Only suggestion would be to provide fill-in the blanks generic templates, as opposed to scrambling to transcribe shorthand notes and later decipher. Otherwise, perfect class and instructor.

Chris is a fantastic professor who really wants the best for his students. He's strict on attendance, but as long as you show up to 95% of classes, you'll be fine. The speeches are simple, and he cares more about the outlines than the actual speech. You will always have notecards. He's also super funny and gives great feedback.
