Its a hard class, so expect to do a lot of reading and problems....Douglas is more than willing to help in his office hours I definitely suggest attending them! A great teacher, cares about his students doing well, am happy to have taken his OChem class!

The tests are very hard. Although helpful, his clarity is lacking. Make sure to read the textbook and go to class (not to learn, just to see what you need to read).
This was his first time teaching an undergraduate class and that came through in the difficulty levels on the tests. BUT it IS a hard class...a class that regardless of who your teacher is will require a lot of extra work! He wasn't able to keep up very well in lecture, but he did give us numerous tips for success (probelms, office hours etc.)
He was very clear about what to expect in the class. He made a schedule of the topics that he would cover each date of lecture and pretty much stuck to it. He let us know what we would be tested on. He was very responsive to the concerns of people in the class; he allowed time for questions during the lecture and made helpful handouts
I felt the more time I put into his class, the worse the resulting test scores. He talks to the board instead of to the students, writes very small/cramped and erases quickly so your lecture notes end up incomplete and it's hard to study off them. He sometimes uses different terms than the text so it's hard to link notes with what's in the book.
First the comment about his dyslexia was way out of line. He is a very difficult teacher and teaches way to fast, almost like a graduate level course. It can be hard to read what he writes on the board and I sat in the front row. He also talks into the board. My advice choose a diffrent teacher until he gets more expierence teaching at the undergra
Just murdered the students last Spring 2009 semester. Hope he will never ever teach again. It was his 1st time teaching
He is one of those professors where the textbook does all the teaching for him and yet all he does, is antagonize you as far as what you understood from the textbook. He works very hard to make sure you do not succeed in his class. So I would suggest pick another professor instead of him.
I'm in O-Chem now. He made it very clear that he learned a lot of lessons during Sp '09. Sorry you guys were the guinea pigs. I think he follows the outline. I liked that he put together a "how-to" on what you need to do. I think a lot of students are accustomed to breezing through courses and it ain't happening for this one. You have to work hard.
I would suggest you skip his class and take another professor. He has a tendency to threaten you constantly. His main job is to make sure that you are totally intimidated. He is worst teacher because he thrives on making the class harder that it already is.
O chem is tough, but this guy explains things very understandably. Good guy no complaints.
He is patient and wants students to do well and learn. Has reviews sessions the Sat mornings before Mon tests. Has study guides, and tests are mostly problems from class or the textbook. Reading the book is highly recommended, if you don't, don't expect an "A". Hint, if he says "This would make a good final problem" it will be on the final.
By far one of the best professors I've had at the U. He's definitely put in a lot of effort to change the way he teaches the class, and it shows. The older reviews are NOT reflective of his current teaching. He's very clear during lecture; he thoroughly works through example problems. Just be sure to go to lecture and stay on top of the homework.
He is very patient! His lectures are extremely clear!
Nice guy but the worst teacher ever. He is patient but nothing helpful. No logic, No emphases,no clarity. If u truly want to learn O-chem, never choose him!
Douglas was very enthusiastic and wants his students to succeed. he's very good at asking good questions and taking time to answer question well.
One of the best chemistry experiences I have had. He truly cares about his students and is willing to help in any way he can. Lectures are very clear. The tests are easy to predict, look at practice tests. Highly recommended!
Douglas is very helpful and encouraging. His class is formatted to help students succeed, with online assignments and pop quizes that keep you up to date on the material.
Would recommend to anyone. He is very helpful and wants to see all of his students succeed. Organic chemistry is difficult in general so do the assigned problems and reading and it will be less difficult when he gives pop quizzes. Exams gets progressively harder as the material does, but he is always there to answer questions and help along the way
The professor was extremely helpful both in class and in office hours. He made Ochem less scary. I thought his tests were also extremely straightforward and stuck to what he taught in class. Go to class, do the problems, and you'll be fine! I would definitely recommend him and take another class from him!
Douglas is fantastic, and this is coming from someone who not only isn't interested in ochem, but actually bitterly hates it. He really explains things clearly and tries his best to encourage students. He spent half an hour one lecture consoling students who had bombed a test, and that goes a long way towards improving moral.
Best prof I've had, and I hate chemistry, so that's saying something. He genuinely seems to like teaching, which is rare among science profs who usually only care about research. O chem is challenging, but he does everything he can to help you succeed. Just a really nice, earnest guy. His tests are very fair. Go to the review sessions!
I have Professor Douglas for organic chemistry 1, and he's a great professor. That being said, you are taking organic chemistry, so you need to put in the work yourself. As a bonus for doing homework, you're rewarded on tests; most test problems are based on (or are direct copies of) book problems. Definitely recommend Douglas!
I found him very helpful. At times he seemed flustered. Overall I really liked him.
The professor was really nice, however his teaching style was not for me.I found that his tests weren't overly difficult if you understand the material. The hardest part about this class is that it requires so much work beyond the classroom that at times I felt like lecture was pointless. I suggest freelanceteach on youtube.
he's a good professor and gives clear lectures. he has very straightfoward tests and doesn't try to trick you. he cares a lot about his students, and will do anything to help them do better.
This guy is great. He seemed like he really cared that people were getting the material. He teaches by doing problems on the board and explaining as he goes rather than use a power point. Great teacher and Great guy.
Great Professor!!! lectures were very interesting. He explains everything very well while also keeping students engaged by doing problems on the board. Midterm exams were fair. If you are having trouble go to his office hours he is extremely helpful! At the end of the semester you'll be wishing he was teaching 2302!!!
Very good professor overall. He's an awesome lecturer and keeps things interesting so it's not impossible to sit through class. He's also very helpful at office hours, though he was so clear in lecture that I rarely needed to go.
Great OChem professor. Easy to follow and crystal clear in lectures. Of course, he omits a lot of necessary material from the book, so read that to first learn everything then use him as a guide for what is important to know. What i most liked about him was he provided helpful worksheets that summed up a lot of the tedious material. Great prof!
Hard to follow and not well prepared for class. He makes a lot of spelling errors on the board. He is a great guy and means well, but it was difficult learning OCHEM from him, even with a chem background. I recommend a different prof.
Douglas was a very good professor. He always knew what he was talking about and made sure to emphasize what was important. A lot of work needs to be put in outside of class, but as a professor he seems willing to go out of his way to make the class better for his students. Seriously nice guy, and a very good professor!
Professor Douglas was awesome! Highly recommend if you have to take OChem. It's a very challenging course so make sure you can handle the workload before enrolling in it. If you do the work you will do fine and this professor will do the best he can to meet you half way. I wish he was teaching Ochem2!
Great professor! You can tell that he puts a lot into teaching. Somehow he also manages to do research and have a family on the side. Profs like him are few and far between. Truly cares about his students. Recommend.
Professor Douglas is an incredible teacher. He is crystal clear, gives excellent notes during class, engages students every lecture, and has lots of useful tools for students outside of class (lecture notes online, "muddiest point", problem sets). I thought I lucked out with my professor for OChem 1, but he's even better. Super approachable.
Great guy, really tries to be a great teacher (and succeeds). Actively looks for feedback from students and is flexible to what works. Goes the extra mile to help, and has a nice sense of humor. Always super prepared for class, and makes lectures interesting with fun syntheses.
Really seems to care about the students being able to understand the material. Gives tests that are actually possible to pass, unlike some OChem professors. You don't need the textbook (online hw though, you need an access code for that). The textbook is helpful for practice problems though. Overall, would recommend this prof for OChem.
Lectures are very clear with in-class activities. His problem sets are very difficult , but they prepare you well for the exams. Tests are long but very fair: all of the questions come from the stuff he talked about in class. Office hours are very helpful. I will recommend him for organic chemistry courses.
By far the best chemistry professor I have had so far. Lectures were very well layed out and he did in-class examples that went along with his test very well. Tests followed both his lectures and his problems sets really well so as long as you keep up with everything you are bound to do well :)
Professor Douglas is a great professor. CHEM 2332H is definitely hard, but Douglas structures lecture almost like a high school class, with examples and practice problems and time for questions. He makes an effort to take feedback throughout the course. Lectures are entertaining and informative. Textbook is essential to understand mechanisms.
He's the best chemistry professor I have had so far. He typically has about 1 quiz every 2 weeks, sometimes every week but they are group quizzes. He really cares about the students and gives clear guidelines for what will show up on exams. If you study and do practice problems, passing won't be hard. He is funny and the lectures go by fast.
Amazing lecturer! By far the best science professor I've every had! He's incredible! I'd suggest him any day. He gauges where the class is and works around that, he doesn't try to force new material if the class isn't ready. He literally tells you what's on the test and he makes the material interesting to learn. I couldn't get enough of OCHEM!
Professor Douglas is a real gem. It is very clear that he cares about his students and is always working to be a better professor. He presented organic chemistry in a way that was both fun and easy to learn, which is no simple task! The 6 quizzes are tough, but you get 1 drop and they prepare you well for the exams. Overall a great professor!
Professor Douglas is the epitome of a perfect teach! Your voice matters in this class. He does his best to aid your learning with Connect HW, Iclickers, 6 Quizzes, Post Class Surveys. There are 4 exams. If you don't like assignments etc. take another class, but his class structure helped me succeed!
Go to CHEM FOUNDATIONS and office hours! Douglas is the best. Take this course, it has several aspects to help you succeed in the course.
Douglas was a great professor, its ochem so I mean it's going to be hard, practice and make sure to ask questions and go to office hours. He cares about his students, a great listener and loves feedback so he can be better in his classes. Understands material and can answer questions clearly. recommend him overall
Douglas is very interactive during lecture and encourages students to work together which holds everyone accountable, especially for quizzes. Ochem is hard but the exams are fair and he makes the dense subject more interesting with his lectures, fun facts, and demos. He is very accessible and clearly cares a lot about each of his students
Professor Douglass made organic chemistry very interesting to learn. His tests are very reasonable, and the grading standards are very clear. There were times when I looked forward to coming to class which I never thought would happen. Taking any class with professor Douglass is a golden opportunity.
Douglas is a gem of a professor. The material of the class is obviously not super interesting but he kept it fresh with little jokes and fun facts, as well as the occasional very crude joke. Homework is light, just a preclass assignment and a minuscule post-class survey. Overall I highly recommend him.
OCHEM is a difficult class in itself, but professor Douglas really makes the material understandable. He emphasizes how this isn't a weed out class and really roots for us all to do well. His grading criteria are pretty lenient and he doesn't follow a rigid schedule for the class. Exams are fairly difficult but he gives previous exams to reference.
Douglas is the best professor I have had at uni so far- his tests are fair in both material and the way they are graded, and he clearly cares about his students and their wellbeing. His lectures are super helpful and although the book did help, tests were mostly based off lectures. Pay attention to his fun facts as you might see them on the exams.
Douglas is one of the best professors I've had here. He tries very hard to make you learn the material outside class itself, and he makes sure you understand everything before he moves on. Ask him about his fitness routine...
Organic chemistry is a hard subject for me, but the way Prof. Douglas teaches really made it make sense. There are clicker questions and group quizzes in class, but as long as you pay attention and engage with material you should be fine. Overall, Douglas is a great lecturer, fair grader, and definitely one of my favorite professors so far.
From the first day in class, you can tell that professor Douglas actually cares about his students. He will do his best to provide you with all of the resources that you need to succeed, so it's on you to study and put in the time. He's a good guy and cares, I would definitely recommend him.
Douglas is the best professor I've ever had. He puts in an incredible amount of effort to make sure you're understanding the content. He listens to what you're struggling with, and makes extra videos, does extra practice problems, and reviews to make sure you understand. Extremely organized and clear. Super caring!
Chris is an amazing organic chemistry professor. I wasn't a huge fan of ochem during the first semester but taking it with him made me like it so much more. He explains content in a way that is easy to understand and really does his best to help his students succeed. He is hilarious and makes lectures fun. If you get the chance, definitely take him
Professor Douglas really cares about his student's concerns, he gave good feedback and his lectures were amazing. I rarely have to reread the book in-order to understand the materials. Please do not try to memorizes things, it will not gonna help as there is so many things to remember, understand it and you would find a repeated pattern.
Professor Douglas is a real gem. He makes class enjoyable and teaches very well. Tests are difficult, but if you attend class, review your notes, do the book problems, and use your resources/study hard, you can get an A. You can tell he really cares about his students. Take professor Douglas, I am glad I did!
Professor Douglas is an awesome professor. Rarely did I feel like the material was impossible to understand when he taught. He posted his lectures after class which helped me understand the content so much better because I could look at his notes on my own time. Best ochem professor out there. He also makes MEMES! What more could you ask for.
Professor Douglas is the best chemistry professor and possibly the best professor at the U. He makes lectures actually fun, which makes learning O chem so much more enjoyable. There are many other things that count for points (I.e. homework, group quizzes, attendance) and while it may seem like a lot of work, these really boost your grade.
Really cares about his students. I was working 2 jobs and struggling to keep up. He made himself available for tutoring outside of office hours and even provided assistance via phone to accommodate my schedule. He did everything he could to help me pass, while still being fair and sticking to the syllabus. If you make the effort, he'll do the same.
Douglas is the best CHEM professor I've ever had, probably the best professor I've had at the U period. The other reviews speak for themselves. So caring, willing to go the extra mile for his students at all times. Just a genuinely good guy to know.
Really great and caring professor! actually makes ochem enjoyable and understandable! He really works to make sure you understand concepts. lectures are great! would 10/10 recommend!
Only giving a 5 because he doesn't use proctorio. Otherwise a horrible experience and professor. Does not answer questions, fix incorrect grades, or take criticism.
I did awful in ochem 1, barely passed, but am now getting an A in ochem 2 and its all thanks to Chris. The course material is difficult, but he realizes this and does everything he can to make it more manageable. I've never had a professor who cares as much about his students success as Chris does, can not recommend him enough.
Does every possible thing to help you succeed! Best prof/coach by far that I've had; I hate and am so bad at organic chem (got a B- in 2301 but have an A so far in 2302) but he makes it tolerable and he truly wants to help (offering lecture videos, synchronous class to do problems, old exams, office hours, etc.).
If you take any class with Chris "Coach" Douglas, consider yourself lucky. Great teacher, great guy, cares about us. We did a flipped classroom, so Coach recorded all of the "lectures" to watch the night before class (less than 1 hour) and our Zooms were to answer questions and do practice problems, which was incredibly helpful in (imo)fair exams.
Pulled a lot of tricks and made exams super hard relative to what we were taught. You HAVE to buy the solutions manual in order to succeed in his class, he literally references book problems on past exams. GroupMe was his main mode of communication which was weird and excluded many students from important announcements like exam typos and hints.
Chris is one of the most inspirational professors I have encountered thus far. He genuinely cares about his students. GroupMe was used as a way to communicate with him and other students in the class-- felt like he held office hours 24/7. Exams are not proctored but they are tough. It is also a flipped classroom. You have to work for your grade!
Professor Douglas is a nice guy but his exams were merely too difficult. On average, the exams would take around 16-20 hours to complete (not lying btw). I feel that his class was EXTREMELY HINDERED by the online format. I never did find a way to succeed in this class.
Chris was as really great guy and I appreciated that the exams were take home and not proctored. However, I agree with the other person that they were just too ridiculously hard. I think the shortest amount of time I spent on an exam was 12 hours, so you spend an entire day on a test which is crazy. Nice guy though
Chris put a lot of work into the course in terms of acknowledging student feedback. That being said, I wouldn't call him accessible outside of class nor terribly helpful when learning the concepts. I primarily taught myself the material and stopped attending lectures after the first exam. He made the take-home exams and quizzes extremely difficult.
I took O chem 2 online with him (pandemic). The class was flipped, and I would typically spend two hours watching lecture videos and taking notes before class. Classes were not mandatory but he had prepared practice problems which were very helpful and often came up in similar problems on tests. Tests were all take home and very difficult.
Professor Douglas is a fantastic and very caring professor. Each class had a clear topic and lecture to go along with it. He also prepared a class activity that often entailed delicious food and you can tell he cares deeply about his students. Do the couple assignments and you will get a very easy A. I hope you enjoy Professor Douglas as much as me
Professor Douglas did a fantastic job teaching Chemistry in the Kitchen. I came in with a very weak foundation in chemistry and left with a solid understanding. He implemented activities in every class that were fun and helped to support the lecture. He is extremely caring and very interactive in class.
Professor Douglas is a very kind hearted person who cares deeply for his students. There was a number of time class went off topic but hed listen to what you had to say. He had interactive lectures and made it simple to understand. Overall amazing person, I wish I could have him again.
Reminder this is for chem 1903, not a real chem class. Amazing professor, so kind & thoughtful. He brought super well thought out food experiments to class, and encouraged us to connect with our classmates. One thing though, he gives kinda confusing chem explanations but I'd say most hadn't taken a chem class before and didn't understand them.
I loved chemistry in the kitchen. It was such an easy going class and Chris makes sure to emphasize that he is trying to make it stress free. 100% recommend taking it if you get the chance.
I would definitely recomend this class. Anyone interested in cooking or chemistry, this class is perfect for. You only meet once a week, he provides very interesting lectures, and then you do an activity by cooking/preparing some kind of food. You can really tell that he is interested in what he's teaching.
He is a great professor, you can tell that he genuinely cares about all of his students. Is very accommodating and flexible as well.
This man is amazing. 4 years at this school and had him my first semester of my senior year. Easily the best lecturing teacher I have had. Actually made Organic Chemistry very understandable. Tough class overall, but he is determined to see you succeed if you give effort.
Amazing and fun class! Professor Douglas was incredibly interesting, the in class activities were fun, and the topics were engaging. Would recommend to anybody interested in the subject, easy and fun class!
