He likes to go way too far in depth about history subjects. He uses big made up words(not in the dictionary)which are very confusing. Kind of eccentric. Takes attendence sometimes, usually on a friday or when there are tons of students absent. Make you write long papers. He is very hard to comprehend and his grading varries.
He introduces a new way of teaching that most students have never been exposed to; then he expects for you to obtain excellent grades. During his lectures he wonders around the topic and doesn't stay focused. He has terrible hand writing and it is hard for you to get him to change it. Lets his liberal opinions affect his teaching.
He is a very different kind of teacher. I feel that I'm leanring a lot in this class, but he does keep you on your toes w/ reading and writing. He has so much to say about what he's teaching and a real passion for it. You just have to take this class to experience it for yourself. i would recommend it :)
he told us that he designed our class for an ivy league school and that all of the other professors in his office said that his syllabus was too hard.
is off the wall and hard to understand
talks way too fast and uses big words making him hard to understand and take notes. expects you to be a great writer and is fairly hard to learn from. all work turned in is written papers, so if you are not good at papers dont take
chris freeman is the most important professor at this otherwise mediocre institution
Chris is an awesome teacher. He teaches history as it should be taught. Dates and numbers aren't important, but understanding the concepts are vital to him. There are many readings, but if you read them well and show up to class every day, you will learn more than any other class at this university. I would love to take another one of his classes.
Class based on discussion and writing papers! Difficult class, but you do read a good book!
Where to start? Freeman is quirky and often difficult to follow. He's a great guy --but I tend to tune him out when he starts to ramble. You don't work from a text and instead have to purchase several books. All grading is paper-based. Lots of reading. Teaching is "discourse" based and is hard to grasp at first. I often feel BS'd.
He talks extremely fast and expects you to read long boring books in short amounts of time. He uses made up vocabulary so it's extremely hard to follow him. He likes big words. Seems like he's trying to prove how smart he is to everybody. I'd say avoid him but...there really aren't better options if you have to take this class.
Chris Freeman is an excellent professor. He expects you to learn and think about the society we are living in, the out of class work is no more than 3 hours a week and well worth the time. One of the few professors at the school worth their paycheck.
I didn't know what to think of Freeman at first. I thought he was hard and bias. The more I thought about it, the more I realized how good he is. He says outlandish things to make you talk, but his difficult readings and essays he makes you write help you to form your own voice. Take him if you want a very helpful, interesting experience.
Seriously, where are the chilly factors for Freeman? This man is dead sexy and wears skinny jeans to compliment his mismatched ties and button down shirts. This class was one of the best I've taken at Stout. His lectures pertain to a specific audience, mind you...
I will give Freeman this: He is highly entertaining and not too bad to look at. However, his teaching ability is sorely lacking. He rambles, he has horrible handing writing when he DOES write on the board. I take very good notes, but I don't remember a single thing learned. He is one of those profs that thinks he is a God of History. Sorry, but no.
this was the best class that i have ever taken. freeman made me look at history in a totally diffent way. this class was about thinking, not notetaking!!!
This guy is insane with the reading. He'll have you reading 3 different things at once. It's difficult to tell exactly what you're supposed to be focused on. His class is extremely unorganized and scattered. He's a horrible teacher in my opinion.
You're asked to read about 100 pages a week and then he'll ask you questions and expects answers to be be in about two sentences. I've been in his class for over a month and he's yet to give me a grade. He says he has 200 essays to read. Gee...hope mine wasn't number 187 when he's tired and grumpy. His online class is extremely unorganized.
Freeman class is something to avoid. The guy speaks way too fast and expect someone to learn all his material, the reading is ridiculous, and he thinks he is the smartest guy alive with his new "concept" of teaching. Stay out while you still can.
Took his Modern World class, and really didn't care about history at all. He brought up some AMAZING points that I have never even thought of looking at. Amazing teacher, but very difficult class. If you actually want something to wrapt your brain around take this class, this is not for the student who doesn't want to work for a grade though.
Freeman is A-Mazing!!! I heard that he was super tough with grading, but I have been pleasantly surprised. He teaches you to actually think for yourself. He may seem to be a little spastic and confusing at times but has a way of tying it all together to make sense. He will make you work, but it is totally worth it!
He is an amazing teacher. he broadened the spectrum of my thought. He is very difficult to follow at times. also, his extremely liberal (can you say communist) views can take over his lecture and become the aspect of a lecture
This is by far the worst class I have taken. He goes on rants and can never seem to keep on the topic the lesson was designed to teach. Your whole grade is papers and tests. Papers are expected to include specific details yet throughout the entire class you are told "knowing specific dates is not important." The only good thing a takehome final.
Chris Freeman's Western Civilization class is pretty much the most confusing thing I have done in my life. I will be getting a B, but I learned absolutely nothing that will benefit me in my future. If you're a teaching major, good luck, it is required.
hot class sexy man. second class i have taken from freeman and it did not disappoint.
FREEMAN RUUUUUUUUUUULES!
Simply put, an engrossing and unparalleled teaching experience. The classes are hard, but a blast to attend. Easily my favorite professor from my college experience. Took both western and latin american.
inspirational man.... changed my life.
Freeman is awesome, best History professor at Stout. Talks fast and is hard to follow, but the lectures are free live entertainment. I actually looked forward to am lectures. Be prepared to take notes and write good papers. Definitely take him as long as you don't mind doing the reading.
Best teacher I've had in college bar none
One of the best profs I have ever had! Really tough but learned a ton! Lots of work: essays, reading from lots of sources. The way he teaches is really hard to wrap your head around at first but just hang in there, it really is a great way to learn. Really enthusiastic guy! Interesting to listen to what he has to say, unbelievably intelligent!
Freeman is the best teacher I have had. His class is not easy and is all paper based, but you learn so much it should be a crime to not take one of his classes. Hes full of energy and has an intense passion for what he teaches. HE CARES ABOUT HIS STUDENTS AND WANTS THEM TO LEARN! What I learned in his class changed my perspectives on life. Amazing
VERY FUNNY GUY!! If you don't get history he can be hard to follow because he talks so fast. I really liked his teaching style and humor but I had trouble paying attention unless he was telling a story. His writing prompts were pretty incomprehensible but doable. He gave one page paper assignments rather than frequent tests.
Freeman is so funny! His classes are so entertaining, but it makes you wonder how much crack he has to be on cause he's waaaay to energetic at 8AM. His classes provide a lot of insight. Brilliant man. Easy class. Do it.
It's pretty hard to get up for early classes sometimes, but Freeman is hilarious, intelligent, and ridiculously passionate about what he teaches. Your should probably just take him.
His rant lectures are hard to follow, but the class changed my perspective on how history should be recorded, through the eyes of the people. We only did essays but he is a tough grader, looking for as many details as possible. Speak up because he likes participation. A very passionate teacher and very amusing.
Freeman....Oh where to start. If you truly love History TAKE HIM. if you are taking it for Gen Ed. you are screwed. He has good intentions but he is very random and some of his lectures are just plain stupid. I would not tell a friend to join his class unless they loved history. bottom line...If you wanna work hard take him.. if not well then dont
great teacher with a TON of energy. if you want a teacher with a boring lecture that is on topic. dont take him. but if you like to participate in classes that are not typical, this is a great class. grades are based off of papers and partcipation.
hmmmmm.... let's see, chris freeman is not a stout professor. he makes you think and he makes you question everything you thought you knew. this class changed my life.
Many other comments state that Freeman is an inspirational teacher one who will change your views on how you view history and the fact is, it's completely true. I've been in 2 other history classes at a Tech college and none compared to this class. Great Teacher, if you're willing to put in the effort and read.
This professor had excellent enthusiasm and really got me interested and thoughtful about history.
Boring lectures. Write too many papers.
boring class, but the teacher is really hot. if you have the same mind set as him it's pretty interesting.
I did learn a lot in this class but he was very belittling on the comments he made on our papers. If you take what your prof. say personally I would not suggest him. If you don't care and want to learn then take his class.
I enjoy that he approaches history from ideas and movements rather than dates, names, and events. However I would have taken more away from his class if he didn't ramble off on tangents and try to fit 5 hours of material into a hour and a half discussion. He is also very egotistical. I enjoy his humor , but clarity is not this guys specialty.
guy had great enthusasim and made me think about history rather than memorize useless information
not sure what's up here. best professor I've ever had... bar none. learned a ton.
Passionate dude. Changed how i think and i learned a ton. take hs class.
Not clear in the intent, and lacking any clarity. Would not have taken a class with him had I known it would have been run like this.
Awesome guy. Has a unique style of teaching.
Makes you look at history a whole new way! Very interesting! A lot of reading from different sources and very time consuming! If you love history take him!!!!! If you do not want to put the time and effort in, don't take him! Wonderful guy, always willing to help, tough grader! read the material and you will do just fine!
Avoid this instructor if at all possible. Poor organization, lacking any credible content, and extremely slow at getting grades back. Not an asset to UW Stout.
You will have readings that are 40 pages long. This guy is funny and interesting to listen to. I learned a ton from this course. BUT this guy is brilliant. Sometimes you can't tell how smart he is. He is a tough grader go in for help with the papers. One time freeman was so tired he fell asleep at the bored, he stays up to late.
Super passionate dude. Changed the way I view the world
Avoid his class if your looking to learn anything usefull...........
This was my last class at Stout and the best one I took. Novels, movies, music, art, and NO TEXTBOOK!!!!!!
This guy is brilliant. I am glad that he teaches in my major. He's been one of the most influential professors I've had the opportunity to meet at Stout. I'd HIGHLY recommend taking at least one class of his
I took the class online in the summer. Wrote 2 reaction papers, 3 discussion boards, 2 test and that's it! It was a lot of reading to do and he is a tough grader. Better than other history teachers I've had here. He wasn't much help through email though.
No Structure to class, Hes very opinionated about his subjects and it gets in the way of the material your supposed to be learning.
Really smart guy but it is sometimes hard to understand what he is discussing.
TONS and TONS and TONS of reading!!! Never uses a powerpoint or textbook and just talks and rambles the whole class period. Can be funny but gets very boring with how he explains what he is talking about.Hard to understand and very opinionated.Suggest not taking him.
Very smart guy but sometimes he doesn't know how to simplify things so students can understand. He assigns a lot of reading but doesn't check to make sure you did it, however i would recommend completing the readings. Has a good sense of humor though and keeps the class entertaining!
lots of reading, but this course pretty much changed my outlook on life.
Tons of reading to do. All very hard to wrap my head around and then his lectures make me even more confused. I would not want to take another class with him. It is way too confusing and he is way too smart to dumb things down to understand.
The dude is awesome. Yes you will have readings that can be lengthy, but that is the nature of history. You read PRIMARY sources, not some stupid textbook. Freeman is hilarious, super passionate, and brilliant. If you have the opportunity, take a class with him. Your views will be challenged and he may change your entire outlook on the world.
I am a senior and Professor Freeman has got to be one of my favorite teachers I have had in college. He always finds ways to compliment your writing style and grades well based off of your emotion towards the subject matter. Quick grader and very nice.
Absolute Genius. Incredibly funny and easy to get along with. Always helpful. Teaches you perspectives that no other professor (I believe) can.
A class that changed the way I look at the world.
Out of all the professors I've had thus far, none have changed the way I look at the world more than Chris Freeman. This guy will tear apart any previous notions you have, and make you look at things in a new light. His classes might seem a little crazy, but pay attention and you'll do fine. He wants to make you think in the essays he gives.
Quite Possibly the single greatest professor on campus. His modern world class not only changed the way i saw the world but helped me in several other classes. Chis himself is one of the most genuinely nice people on campus and will always take the time to talk to you after class.
Good guy hard material. Always willing to help grades mostly on effort.
Brilliant professor with a pleasant disposition.
Have fun taking a class that asks have you ever wondered what the world is really all about. I know I haven't and I didn't think History of Ideas of the 20th Century was going to have anything to do with Goethe and other difficult reads!
Though there's a lot of reading for the class, the lectures he has are very interesting. He looks at things differently and is much more open than most professors. At first I thought he was crazy but I learned he's not and learned a lot from the course.
Brilliant teacher. Even though he may ramble on for too long at times, what he is saying is incredibly insightful. He certainly has a way with words.
He is a very smart professor when it comes to the topics in class and on D2L. He does talk for a LONG time, but it all relates to the class. Also he is an EASY grader on papers.
Chris is a very good teacher! He is always willing to help, and cares about what he teaches about. He knows what he's talking about. He makes sure everyone knows what he's talking about. I really suggest taking him!
This class was AWESOME. no textbook, good readings and a course that changed how I looked at EVERYTHING. I would strongly recommend taking AT LEAST one class from Freeman before you graduate.
He is an awesome and crazy teacher! you should got to his class everyday not only because its fun but you will understand the info. If you are confuse he will help you and repeat if you want. You never have test may have three quizzes the most. Its mainly essay but you get a lot of time for them. I would take his class again and recommend him!!
Extremely interesting and intelligent. Lots of reading and critical thinking-- but isn't that what a higher education is about?!
If you hate reading long, boring articles everyday, I would not bother taking his class. He's extremely crazy and entertaining in class, but it's hard to get anything out of class. Extremely easy grader. Didn't do one of the papers fully and I got a few points off and said it was amazing. Don't even have to show up everyday. He doesn't really care.
I took HIST 210 online with professor Freeman and I've regretted it since day 1. At least 80+ pages of boring reading EVERY week, and we have weekly discussion boards that are due and are required to read every single post of every other student. This class takes up an extreme amount of time. I DO NOT recommend it! midterm is insane amount of time
I would NOT take this class. This is a 3 credit class and you literally have to spend days reading the BORING articles. He expects WAY to much from his students and he gives you like 4 days tops on assignments. I struggled in this class and usually i don't struggle in history classes. Thank god it is over!
Best class I have taken in college. The guy is inspirational and loves to teach. All exams are take home and he grades on effort.
In a three credit class meant for freshman and sophomores the midterm was 7-10 pages and the final was a MINIMUM of 20 FREAKING PAGES. 20.5 actually. All of it required about 150 pages of reading and unless this is the only class you're taking and you don't have a job avoid this professor at all costs.
This is the worst online class I have ever taken. There is so much homework and the midterm consists of three 2-3 page essays, along with 10 short answer questions. I would advise to take a different teacher or class, taking this class is one of the worst decisions I could have made. None of this is against the professor personally.
Freeman is a confusing and crazy instructor, sometimes he would just ramble about things that are not even related to the long and boring articles that he expects everyone to read every week. Unless you love Latin America History and willing to do the reading, you will have a hard time doing the essays that he assigns you.
Dr. Freeman is one of the best professors at UW Stout. He is tough but fair, incredibly inspirational (keeps his entire class enraptured), and has a great sense of humor!
Very disorganized and is all over the board with what he expects from you.
I LOVE PROF FREEMAN!!!!!!!!!! He is so awesome and inspiring!! I have changed as a human being from taking this class. Freeman is a man of wit and wisdom who is 100% open minded. AND WANTS TO CONNECT WITH STUDENTS!! Way cool. He wants people to understand their experience within the world, and thanks to him, I do so much better. #freeman4president
Great professor and very passionate. Would definitely recommend.
I love Chris as a person - he's funny, thoughtful, and helpful. I liked having him as a teacher and thought his lectures could be very interesting at times. However, most of the class revolves around reading long, confusing, dense texts for homework and then discussing them in class. Don't take this class if you aren't willing to read a LOT.
He is a great person and has a lot of passion for history. Makes class fun most of the time. But is pretty hard with homework. Be ready to read... A LOT. So if you do not like reading, DO NOT take his class. And if you do not read, do not expect to pass the class. If you take the lecture class, there is only one essay due. Maybe more for online.
Freeman is an awesome person, but a confusing professor. You have to be okay with reading and writing a lot. The worst part about him is he will email you the night before class to tell you homework is due or just post it online without telling you in class. His classes are fun, but usually everyone is just wondering what the hell is going on.
Took this course online. Terrible clarity on how to do well in the course. you maybe get feed back two or three times through out the course. He fails to give you any discussion grades till after the final which makes it hard to know where you stand through out the course
He assigns a lot of reading. Most are fairly difficult and grindy reads.
He has heavy lectures and a lot of reading. He's super outgoing and interactive with the class. Which made it fun and interesting! Most of the time the whole class is wondering what the hell is going on! You'll write three reflections, two exams, lots of reading! nonjudgmental, kind, average grader, passionate! Overall, he's a great professor.
I have Freeman for Projection of Global Culture, and he is one of the nicest professors I have ever met, but also one of the most disorganized people I have ever met in my life. Sometimes as a class we never understood what he was trying to say but he is definitely very fun and interesting!! Just so much work
LOVE LOVE LOVE! He is so cool and funny and hilarious! I was actually sad on the last day that the class was done. Take his class he is the greatest. Honestly was surprised that these evaluations of him weren't better because is the best.
One of my favorite professors! He is very caring of his students and quirky as well. He literally walked on the tables in the room on the first day. It's a little hard to understand what he's teaching, but he's always more than happy to talk with his students after/outside of class. Highly recommend, even for a gen ed.
Non-stop reading and he gets very off topic and does not make sense
Chris is a great professor. I learned more in his Modern World History course than I learned in any of my other general courses. He helped change the way I think about the world. If you read the readings and put effort into your papers, you will do just fine. I personally found his lectures very engaging and enjoyed going to class.
Dr. Freeman is hard to follow. However, he is a nice, funny person and was therefore interesting to have as a prof. He can sometimes be a slightly difficult grader. You definitely have to put in the effort to get a good grade. Pay attention, do the readings, and you'll be fine.
I have had Chris for three classes over my college career and I have hated every second of it. He is very disorganized, does not give clear criteria, expects you to have Ph.D. level knowledge of a 200 level course. He changes his criteria for assignments every time you ask him. He is condensing when you share concerns about the class. Do not take
This is hands down the best class I have taken in college. Course makes you question everything and is filled with crazy good material. Cant wait to take Peace Studies in the Soring! Everyone needs to take at least 1 class from Freeman.
So here's the thing, I think he's a very nice person, but a very bad professor, all ego. It's more like he comes to class so that he can hop up onto the podium and literally hold you like a captive audience. He is the antithesis of professional, there is a big difference between having a casual relationship with your students and not caring.
Due to COVID, I had no choice but to take this course online, and I despise it. His course organization is messy and youre never updated about when things are due or when you have a quiz, which results in it being late or closed off. His lectures are posted through a page long announcement and assigns hours upon hours of watching history movies.
Freeman is amazing. My only regret is I had to take him online this semester.
Freeman is the greatest! He'll change how you view the world. Taking him at Stout should be a requirement.
Chris is an amazing human. You can tell he really cares about what he is teaching. The content in the class was extremely interesting and foundational, but I had a hard time with difficult readings and complex lecture topics. Lots of readings from Philosophers. Nonetheless Chris will spend hours going over topics to make sure you succeed.
This professor gave more outside of class home work, readings, and quizzes than I have ever seen in my life. I had to spend more time on his class than all of my others combined to do well. He went over content so fast and spoke in such a sophisticated manor than no one could really understand him well. Extremely liberal and pushed it onto others.
Dr. Freeman changed the way I viewed the world with his class. He's amazing and everyone at Stout should take him at least once!
Do not take online. Every week there is a quiz and at least one movie that has a discussion post. He does not grade discussion posts until the end. Be prepared to take notes on every movie as well, or you will end up rewatching them late. More homework then my other five classes combined.
Flaming liberalism can get in the way of class sometimes, but he is very passionate about this class and is very fun. I worked hard on my final and midterm and impressed him so much that he said that I was the first to get 100% of the final without the use of extra credit. Cool guy.
All of the cringe liberal NPCs saying that "Chris changed the way I lived my life" and "Chris made me question everything" is reflective of how biased the class is and how much lack of fun you will have if you take this class.
Decent prof but his canvas is a mess. The assignments aren't hard but it is difficult to gauge how the class is structured when there are still assignments and due dates from two semesters ago. He is very biased but is a funny dude and seems passionate about what he is teaching.
