the worst prof i've ever had
Very approachable, knowledgeable about physics, and patient with questions.

He's a good lecturer and writes fair tests. The sample tests were very helpful for studying. I did all the sample tests I could find.
Very arrogant and rude! I once wrote him an email criticizing him for posting hw assignments online late in the week (giving us only a day or two to complete) and he fired back at me thinking he was god or something. Avoid at all costs!
A good professor that is good at lecturing. He's one of the few professor whose lecture i didn't fell asleep at. His exam is fair. However, i agree he's a little arrogent.
The SI leaders were extremely helpful--definitely use them if you have Gould!
Not helpful, assumes you are stupid
He assignes quite a bit of homework. And the tests are difficult.
worst professor i've ever seen in my life. don't take him!
Worst Professor Ever! Arrogant and rude, answers questions with "it's trivial" all the time, makes you feel stupid, calls students out by name in class. Avoid him at all costs!
He is great, he gives you the easy way to solve problems compared to the hard way. I love how he shows you his way to solve and give sentences that you'll remember forever that will always remind you how to solve the problem the correct way. If at all possible do take during the summer, you'll absolutely love his class!
Great!
One of my favorite teachers by far! Although physics isn't my ideal subject, I learned a lot by paying attention to this professor. Also, he was helpful in responding to e-mails and answering questions outside of class. Thumbs up
Focuses on derivation of formulas, did little to teach how to use formulas and solve problems. Hard exams, but with large curves.
Gould is a character. He has a redeeming side but sort of comes off as an evil scientist with his formal and pretentious vocabulary. Not the worst teacher ever, but didn't do a good job teaching the material for 304. Majority of questions on homework werent done in class. Would spend entire lecture on one problem then forget a minus sign.
Arrogant. Confusing lectures. Expects you to derive equations yourself and teach yourself from the book. Very condescending. It would be more beneficial to read your textbook at home but he takes attendance for a grade. He spends an hour explaining clickers but glosses over important material in lecture.
He doesn't really teach, he takes a whole period to go over a problem and he doesn't even finish it or explain it well. Have to go to class because he takes attendance. Have to teach yourself everything. Overall bad teacher, bad attitude, do not recommend his class.
from what I've seen in class, somethings wrong with his attitude.
Please avoid taking this professor-his attitude is not good and it makes you not enjoy class or Physics at all. I once went to office hours to talk about a bad exam and he responded by giving me bad attitude and a lecture on how "he's never met anyone who benefited from a tutor." Puts people down and also calls on random people in class. Avoid
Very pompous, spends the whole time deriving equations. Homework is time consuming and mostly useless. You have to go to class because of clicker points. Most likely, if you're taking him, its b/c its your only choice. Just study all of the old exams for the midterms and finals and you will do alright, its mostly plugging and chugging.
WORST professor ever! He is one condescending individual. Like what the previous comments mentioned, this guy spends all his time deriving equations. His lectures are basically useless, but you're forced to go because of clickers. Keep doing past exam problems, and you will do well on the exams. The entire final consisted of recycled problems.
Makes basic physics principles confusing, and has students leaving class more lost then when they came in. And he forces you to go to class by having clicker questions, and the homework is all online, which is not easy or useful
He is really frustrating. Spends an entire lecture on one problem that he never even finishes. Overall, please avoid this class.
Gould has literally crushed my hopes and dreams of ever wanting to enjoy physics. He has dug the deepest, saddest, darkest hole and has tossed every one of his "students" in there. Everything he says and does completely ruins any interest in physics. I am sorry for every student who has to take his class. He is the only teacher. I know your pain.
Although he can be a little intimidating he's really a great, understanding professor if you take the time to talk to him. Tests require a lot of studying, but if you actually do the work and understand the material, they're do-able. He takes time to answer e-mails promptly and is willing to help anyone who needs it. I thought he was great.
He explains the concepts in very easy, understandable terms (although it can sound like he is talking down to us). The midterms and final are difficult but only worth a small portion of the grade. Homework and quizzes are worth the same amount as the midterms which can be a grade-raiser. My interest in physics was raised because of this class.
I hated this class but got an A. Gould talks down at students, no matter the question asked. Weekly quizzes were sometimes difficult but doable. Midterms and final were fairly hard, and often used problems never seen before. Homework due at midnight 5 days a week: miserable. Clickers in lecture. But most of all, his attitude was the worst. AVOID.
Incredibly rude to students who asked questions. Not very helpful. Clicker questions everyday require attendence, which isn't an issue. Weekly quizzes were fairly difficult. Not great at explaining. Just a generally unpleasant professor to deal with on a regular basis.
Difficult to understand, often goes into long tangents are seemingly pointless things. In one instance, he spent a solid fifteen minutes explaining the difference between the omega and the letter "w". Overall the class grade you get is a measure of your own ability to teach yourself physics and the level of knowledge you had coming into the class.
midterms and finals not even close to homeworks or quizes. homework due everyday at midnight, mandatory attendance. talks down his students. problem with our school is we do not have enough choices of good professors per class so you're stuck with whoever they assign that semester, good or bad, if you want to graduate on time.a lot of bad profs @ SC
Good lecturer with draconian policies and slightly easy tests.
Terrible professor, avoid at all costs! You will regret not taking the honors physics or any other alternative.
The worst teacher I've ever had. He makes the simplest topics seem way harder than they are and he spends all lecture doing a problem he doesn't even finish. Avoid at all costs unless you enjoy being depressed.
Worst professor in Physics! He just follows the book and go over the problems, upset when you ask a question. Avoid at all cost!
Dr. Gould is a tyrant, for sure, but he's also extremely helpful if you actually try to get help. Always answers emails on the same day, has office hours, and is always on campus anyway, so you can find a way to meet with him. If you pit in the effort, you can definitely get an A, but this isn't going to be a class for which you can brush off work.
Stupid hard and unpredictable homework assignments, tedious labs from which we learn nothing, rambling lectures deriving equations we don't need to know. Worst of all, he assigned a massive pre-lab due THE DAY OF THE FINAL EXAM without warning, after every previous pre-lab would take 5 minutes to complete. I didn't sleep that night. AVOID!
Long, boring lectures. Spends too much time discussing unimportant topics irrelevant to material on the test. Consistently condescending to students. Avoid if at all possible.
Terrible professor that cannot explain physics topics properly and goes on long tangents. He is extremely condescending to students and thinks you cannot understand math. His tests are extremely difficult as well. AVOID THIS PROFESSOR.
So annoying, so much work, so many tangents in lectures that might put you to sleep. But you have to be awake because there are in class questions to answer every day. The curve is excellent and saves lives.
very knowledgeable and approachable professor. learnt mechanics and thermodynamics in the class. exams are not hard but require bunch of practice.
Great teacher, isn't always clear or easy to understand, but hes a great guy and wants to help you to learn.
The most condescending teacher I have ever had. He creates a classroom environment where students are afraid to ask questions because he will belittle them without fail, no matter how valid the question is. He spends all of class time going over semantic-based examples that don't matter. I essentially taught the course to myself.
Extremely unwilling to answer questions (in class or during office hours), gives tons of homework weekly, and gives written hw that even TAs can't understand. If you want to learn physics and don't have much prior experience in the subject, do not take his class! Daily clicker questions are also a pain and are graded for correctness.
Probably the worst professor I have ever had. He explains simple concepts for so long that he leaves only one day to explain actual problems before the midterm, he asked me to come back later every time (4) I came into his scheduled office hours, he specifically tries to trick students in class which is confusing and annoying. AVOID.
His explanations are extremely confusing. I would tune out halfway through because little to nothing he was saying was important. He gives many useless facts and his analogies usually make things worse. I often resorted to simply teaching myself from the homework and textbook. Only reason to attend lecture was for in-class questions and quizzes.
Although the other reviews may dissuade you from choosing him, Dr. Gould actually explains concepts very well and in great detail, a skill which I assume comes from his 20+ years of experience teaching. It can be quite boring to listen to him drone on about unrelated topics. He makes the tests, so going to his class will probably benefit you.
Class seems like it's taught as if everyone knows what's going on. HIs tests are fair but I didn't learn a single thing from him. Not a bad person at all but he definitely could learn to explain what's going on and approach teaching differently. The curve will save your grade but I would not take him if you want to learn anything
Worst class I've taken so far. He taught me basically nothing and the only reason I did decent was because I reviewed old exams to know what to do. Lectures were awful and he rarely discussed anything helpful. Homework and quizzes were completely on your own because he never did anything like them in class. Look for a different prof. if possible.
Exams are curved by a lot, so that helps out tremendously. However, you should walk in to class more than prepared with some background on the material. Lectures are essential, and there are weekly quizzes each Friday. Tons of hw. Epitome when it comes to truly studying for a USC class. Do hw with peers who understand the material!
People hate him but honestly he's the lesser of many evils because there are far worst professors. Participation in the class really matters and so does homework. People see homework as a hassle but I see them as easy points. Midterms and finals are easy because they are basically the same questions from years past. Could've gotten B if I tried.
He is a horrible teacher. His lectures are insanely boring but you are forced to pay attention because he makes you sign in and take several random pop quizzes/questions every class period. I didn't learn anything in class, all self taught. Oh and he is super condescending when you go to his office hours. Worst professor, Not even being dramatic.
It has been 3 years since I was in this guys and the fact that 3 years on I'm still pissed at this dude should tell you enough. Don't bother going to office hours because he won't help you. I'm no idiot but if you don't get a concept right off the bat you're screwed. That being said the dude is undeniably smart, but arrogant also.
His exams are easy but he is super condescending coz I feel he believe he is always right and gentle. When his class ends and some professor came in he shouted at him saying it is not your time until 10 mins later the next class started. In fact, his useless group works just trapped people 90 mins when we can actually learn that in 30 mins...
Has attendance policies like it is grade school - attendance, pop quizzes etc. Made us buy access to an online portal for homework and gave points for discussion in the forum. Textbook and online portal is expensive. He is regularly condescending and an average lecturer. Took 151 two years ago yet I feel strongly enough to review.
Passive-aggressive, low key discriminatory, patronizing, conservative old man who literally slammed a student's laptop down for typing in class. Didn't even give him a warning. As a prof: he's intelligent (but condescending), goes on tangents, rambles on to show off knowledge, purposely tries to screw students over, doesn't explain concepts well.
Dr. Gould is very mean, the worst type to be a professor. Don't understand his psyche, so don't take the class unless you want to be humiliated.
Professor Gould is knowledgeable, but that knowledge often doesn't trickle down to students. He goes through things very quickly and expects us to completely follow complicated steps in his derivations.
Its not as bad as these reviews will all make it seem. PHYS 153 is just a difficult class to begin with. He is one of those guys that expects a lot from his students even if he isn't communicating the concepts in the best way. He's helpful during office hours, somewhat. The tests are hard but the final was COMPLETELY made of problems from midterms
Condescending and overall aggressive towards students when they don't know something. Runs on tangents while explaining in an attempt to make himself seem smarter, leading to us learning in obscure, ambiguous ways. He claims he doesn't even get 100s on the exams he writes, which is honestly sad considering they're not too bad if we learned somethin
Terrible Professor. Loves to humiliate struggling students when they ask questions. Classes feature pop quizzes that almost everyone does poorly on. Lectures are useless. PHYS 153 isn't a prerequisite for any engineering class I'm aware of, so just wait till u can avoid taking him to complete 153. He is the worst prof I have ever had by far. AVOID!
Thinks it is ok to put down kids who are struggling and contemplating leaving the school.
Take this professor if you want to hear comments like the following: USC admits people with learning disabilities so that their failures boost everyone else's grades. You were destined to fail the course. I thought you were a Math Major.
Honestly, I really tried to give this man a chance, I really did. I thought the front where comes off as harsh was just to push us to be better. But after getting to know him, he is honestly one of the worst human beings I've ever met. Doesn't care about his students and is extremely ego driven. It's more him constantly trying to prove his wit.
This professor should be in jail for some of the things he says and does. Believes that people with disabilities fail so that they can boost everyone elses grades.
Hard material, hard class. I'm a DSP student too and he has never treated me unfairly for it. He's very willing to help in office hours. He does seem disconnected with how his students are doing, because he's been teaching so long that this material is easy, so communicate with him. Btw, I suck at physics, I am not doing well but it's not his fault
Class notes aren't great and don't include a lot of material. Homework are too long, doesn't show too many examples during class. Talks a lot about theoretical stuff but rarely shows application.
Doesnt give you that much instruction or teaching to do exercises. Very hard class.
This professor does make classes interesting, but does not go over important materials. HWs require 6 hrs at least per week, lab requires 6 hours, the classes are 3 hours. HWs aren't on material covered in class most of the time. Does not respond to emails, does not realize if students are struggling
It's my most unpleasant learning experience at USC. He wants everyone to use this online peer-grading system for hw, which requires actions every 24 hrs. I emailed him about hw question and he responded but his tone was condescending af. He doesn't show care for his students and their well-being. He tries his best to give everybody a hard time.
Professor Gould is one of the worst professors I have ever crossed paths with. He berates his students and makes them feel stupid for their questions, while not explaining ANY of the work that he tests you on or puts into the weekly assignments. Aside from being absurdly mean to his students, he also will never respond to your emails.
unreasonable homework questions and very mediocre teaching. He sent out a threatening email halfway thru the semester to students who missed his lectures and told them they would fail his class if we don't attend in person, just avoid him at all costs. Man, a little kindness can go a long way
Professor Gould makes a point of telling students to ask questions, but decides to provide non answers and embarrass students who do so. He requires mandatory attendance through spontaneous in class group assignments all while droning on about topics unrelated to the text and exams. Overall caries an air of superiority and arrogance.
PHYS 190 is not a class that you retain information in and take tests on, but I am reviewing because Prof. Gould is rude and off-putting. He seems to come off like a middle school teacher, shushing the class in a hissy fit. He had conferences with the new phys students, and told my friend he wasn't smart enough for phys. He doesn't seem to care.
Took this as a summer course (2022) and I think he's a great professor! Dr. Gould explained everything clearly by frequently using example problems in his lectures. He offered to schedule a meeting when I emailed him asking questions. Although the course is challenging, as long as you read the textbook and use the old exams provided, you'll be fine
Very helpful professor as long as you reach out. Homeworks could be time consuming but they help you understand the concept well. GO OVER THE OLD EXAMS HE POSTED, they're very similar to the ones he give out throughout the course. I have to admit that the class is not easy for me, but still I enjoyed taking it. He's an intelligent and great person.
Professor Gould is a good guy but his lectures can be dry and fast. He tries his best to accommodate students but assumes that we know more than we do. Old exams are a godsend for studying. Daily homework is very long, stressful, and difficult because it is designed to "challenge" students, but it is graded on accuracy. Curve saved this class.
Christopher Gould is so condescending. The material this man lectures on, gives homework on, and tests on are all different. Seeking help from your lab TA outside of class time is your best bet to do well in this class. Ask him if he can add a discussion section, because all you do in the discussion is homework questions which helped save my grade.
Conducted interviews for first-sem freshman students to "get to know us better and keep us in the program". Told 90% of us afterwards we were not smart enough to be a physics major because of where we came from or our unexciting passions. Overall bad and arrogant professor.
(e-summer) Impossibly hard content for "intro" class, grade crazy hard. My lowest mark at SC so far. #1 thing: practice past exams before midterm/finals. Also read the textbook and look up other colleges that teach the same textbook for their physics class as they have clearer explanations and better resources. Lectures confusing. Low qual class
If you have seen Better Call Saul, he is literally the Chuck McGill of USC. Calling him condescending would be putting it nicely. Avoid at all costs if you can.
Simply the GOAT, not much more needs to be said.
Professor Gould is the most condescending and rude instructor I have ever had. He would constantly give snide comments about no one asking questions or coming to office hours, and publicly embarrass students who spoke up in class. Expect actions required almost every day of the week between labs, homework, required readings, and grading your peers.
Gould is a kind human being and amazing professor. His lectures are fantastic and his material vey relevant - not to speak of that time he has conducted a heimlich maneuver to a student in class and saved the day. Don't miss the opportunity to have Gould for 153!
I agree with most of the ratings. He has this ego that he thinks hes better than everyone because of the credentials he earned. Respect to the credentials earned, but hate learning from him. Long homeworks, irrelevant lectures with mandatory participation, sets and reps for midterms.
Please don't listen to any of the quality:5 and difficulty: 1 scores because they are not true. He's extremely arrogant and condescending. Always wants students to ask questions, but puts us down when we do. Lectures and hw don't match up sometimes. Makes us grade each other's hw. Should be a 100 level but he treats it like a 300.. AVOID.
Honestly he IS condescending, but I'm not really here to be friends with my professor, I'm here to learn to material. He is a very clear explainer, and I left the class knowing the material well. He actually teaches some quantum physics near the end, which turned out to be helpful later on. I recommend his class.
All of his lectures are clear and informative. It's strange seeing so many reviews calling him condescending and arrogant as that was completely opposite to my experience. I bombed the first midterm and asked him if I should drop the class. He told me that he would drop that grade for me if I performed significantly better later, and he did 10/10
Solid lectures although spends more time explaining basic algebra than difficult physics (with exception of pre-exam reviews, which were very helpful). Condescending (makes everyone say good morning every class etc). HW is tedious (normal amount, but due throughout week) and graded on accuracy even though lectures insufficient. Curved well.
Gould is both a good lecturer and a nice guy. The material can get hard to fully grasp, but he does a good job of trying to help you through it. The labs in this class are poorly constructed and often irrelevant (Gould would agree), BS the labs as much as possible. One thing to look out for is that the tests where prone to trick questions.
Professor Gould tries to provide his students with a lot of material to succeed but what he provides does very little to help his students prepare for very difficult tests (the most difficult I've seen), while he gives students plenty of previous tests to study in preparation the tests given had altered formats that were much more difficult
He is super helpful with questions and accessible.
One of the most blatantly ignorant and disrespectful professors at USC. Had I had the choice, I would have skipped a semester of physics just to take it with a different professor. Lectures are entirely ineffective, most people likely would have received a similar final grade if they went to zero lectures the whole semester. Truly disappointing :(
Horrid. This guy is horrid. According to Shrewsbury (teaches same class at same time w/ identical exams), Gould's exam averages were SIGNIFICANTLY lower than Shrewsbury's own class. Shrewsbury himself acknowledges Gould's lack of teaching ability. Do your best to avoid for physics. Physics genuinely isn't bad, it's based on the professor.
Lectures felt unorganized and often went off on tangents, which made Phys 151 hard to follow and easy to get lost in during problem solving. The class used frequent cold-calling and mandatory group work for participation, which didn't help my learning. Lab sections weren't very useful. Big plus was the many past exams with full solutions.
