He is not a good professor at all. You are better off teaching yourself. He expects you to know how to use STATA without ever showing how to use it. AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS!!!
Literally a robot with no understanding of the prereqs for this class or how to teach concepts to students. Expects a knowledge of STATA and INTEGRALS when the only pre req is STOR 155!! So bad!!! NEVER TAKE CHANDY!!!
So few examples, slides just have definitions, nobody knows what's going on during class
He is new to the classroom but you can tell he is doing all he can to adapt to UNC. The first exam was very challendging but he did well in preparing the kids in the class for the material.
Brand new to UNC. Only gives slides with long definitions paired with rambling the entirety of each class. No introduction to any concepts, assumed you already have an understanding of the material, nor does he make any effort to ensure students are grasping each lesson. Completely lost & am almost halfway through the course. Also beware of STATA.
All he does is read off of very dense power point slides. The examples he does in class do not match the difficulty of the homeworks or the midterms. He simply does not know how to teach information. His explanations are almost like how a good professor would give a review of material, not actually explaining new material. Very difficult!!!!
He is a very nice person, but i think he struggles to see things from the perspective of someone who doesn't yet understand the material. Smart guy, but teaching isn't his strong suit yet (growth mindset). It's his first year, so maybe we just got bad luck and he'll be really good for subsequent classes. His other RMP is 4.5/5 so there's still hope
He was inspirational in me deciding Econ wasn't for me
Not as bad as made out to be. Expects lots of work outside the classroom on your part, which is to be expected with a major required class. Otherwise, hes just OKAY.
Although this is his first year here and may still be trying to navigate a new university, he is not very clear and reads off of very dense slides with little to no further explanations or examples. He is a super nice guy though and is willing to help during office hours. However, I do recommend that this class be taken with another instructor.
His lectures consist of briefly explaining a topic and then he gives a lot of examples, which is a good way for me to learn, but it isn't for everyone. His exams are very similar to the practice that he gives. The exams are not too hard as long as you go over the practice questions and assignments that he gives for homework.
This class is hard, but Professor Handy tries to help you. The practice problems are similar to the questions you will be tested on. You need to work hard to get a good grade, but the assignments and exams are fair.
Worst professor I have ever had. He makes this class extremely difficult for no reason. His slides are complex and he expects you to understand concepts he has never taught. Be ready to lean STATA and coding by yourself. Awful. DO NOT take him.
Not easy, but not impossible. His lecture notes are not very explanatory. You need to be able to truly understand the material to do well on the tests, but he is very generous with partial credit and you can do well on the exams and assignments. Earlier in the class it was worse (stata especially) which explains some early neg reviews
Chris Handy is great! Most of the bad ratings on here are because people didn't pay attention in class, and wanted an easy A without learning the material. All of the code we need is in the slides, the tests are easy, and Dr. Handy is a really chill guy. Would highly recommend him for Econ 400.
Writes questions with the intention of tricking you on exams and says that you need to select the "most correct" answer. I would try and stay away from him at all costs. Will constantly try and involve labor economics in class when it is irrelevant. Whoever wrote the review below me is lying to you.
Pros. A lot of transparency about whats on exams. The power points are good. The textbook is pretty useful. Cons. Doesn't explain the math well. When we doing practice problems he rarely gives us enough time to actually do the problems. Very frustrating lectures. The exams have a lot of tricky questions based on technicalities.
Professor Handy is a really nice guy. However, people have no idea what is going on during class. Be prepared to teach yourself everything. His exams are way harder than the practice problems that he gives. Chandy will make you reconsider being an econ major. Good guy, average professor at best. I would choose anyone else if given the option.
He is a really nice guy. He expects a lot from students, but the class isnt impossible.
Sometimes the way he explains things can be overly complicated and leaves me more confused than I was originally. Also, he should give more practice problems in the future. That being said, he doesn't surprise you on exams, he is receptive to feedback, his grading is fair, his assignments are fair, and overall is a solid professor.
Cool guy who definitely doesn't deserve his current rating, people are overreacting. Manageable workload, provides examples and sets expectations for what exams will be like. Uploads slides and goes through plenty of practice problems. Stata was tricky at first but he got better at providing guidance over time. Put in the work and you'll do well
Chandy deserves more than his current rating. His lectures make you think about the deeper concepts behind the lectures, which help immensely on assignments and midterms. He emails back quickly, and wants people to succeed. You will have to put in work for an A, but thats to be expected with any weed out econ class. Gives tons of partial credit.
Overall Handy is an average professor. Good prior knowledge of statistics is very helpful in this course. Also, this class was not taught as an Economics course, instead, it felt like a Ph.D. level stats course where seemingly basic concepts are explained in very complicated terms. Stata is a difficult learning curve but it gets easier. Good Luck!
The actual course material is not difficult. But his wording on test questions is confusing. I constantly had problems understanding what he was asking and made mistakes often because his explanations left me confused.
Chris is a cool guy. However, he complicated the material more than needed. There was heavy reliance on equations and math to understand what he was explaining. I think It was his first year at unc would do complicated math pretty quickly, and assume you understood it. You can do well if you are willing to put in work, and he will help if you ask.
Most difficult class I've ever taken. Slides were very dense and didn't make sense. Learned better by rewatching posted lectures to figure things out by myself instead of listening to him read off of them in class. Get ready to learn Stata with little assistance. Seems like he cares a lot, so difficulty may be because it's his first semester here.
ECON400 was a struggle for a lot of people at the beginning of the semester because of STATA and it is expected of you to know the material from the prerequisite, STOR155. Really nice guy and his homework assignments really make you think, but they do prepare you for the exams. But lectures are sometimes a little hard to follow with dense slides.
This class was one of the hardest classes at UNC. The material should not have been so difficult, but the dragging lectures made it seem like a PhD level course, heavily relying on statistics knowledge. Chandy did not curve the class like he said he would all semester, hurting many final grades and leaving a poor impression.
Handy struggles to concisely explain basic statistics uses needlessly long slides to explain the origins of equations and uses time going over unnecessary content while doing too few practice problems. Puts an emphasis on stata but hardly teaches it. Misled the class saying there would be a 3-4 point curve but then unexpectedly only gave 1 point
Overcomplicates, extremely boring lecturer. Class is glorified stats with the introduction of coding that he expects you to learn on your own. Grading criteria is unclear on tests and subjective. Teacher is spiteful, won't round your grade up or fix grading errors even if you are .01% away, he gets joy from seeing students suffer.
Chris Handy overcomplicated everything in this class. He introduced us to Stata and he was no help, had to learn the whole thing by ourselves. I was sick and asked for an extension on an assignment, he said no, because he factored in a drop so there is no excuse or need for an extension, when I could not even get help because I could not leave.
He enjoys the power trip of not rounding grades by hundredths of points. He drones on in lectures about unimportant info and homeworks are based on stata, which is not covered in lectures. Little in class practice. Lied about curves and takes off points for extremely small errors, even if you get questions right. Extremely unclear about grading
At the beginning of the semester HWs and tests were extremely hard and difficult to follow. As the semester went on he adapted and made the class easier to follow. Great improvement! While everyone is talking about the curve he promised, since the final's grades were so high there was no need to curve the other midterms.
He tossed us into Stata without giving us any guidance, which resulted in more stress than necessary. His lectures are boring, it's basically intro Stats again. Don't be lulled into a false sense of security by his projected curves for the class. Make sure you have a good study group for the assignments. Bad wording with an "oh well" attitude.
Didnt teach us how to use stata, which is what the homework was on. Ada result, the first homework was very stressful and many failed. The content is easy enough but the conceptual questions on exams are difficult and MC is also extremely difficult. Hes a nice guy, but he promised a curve and didnt follow through, which was not very nice of him.
Econ 400 was a hard class, and I feel like a lot of students came in expecting it to be easy because of the previous professor, Kevin Allen, who, from what I've heard, barely taught at all. It was a hard class with Chris, but he was by no means a bad professor, and definitely cared about his students. No extensions is annoying though, bc of COVID
This man is the reason the economics department isn't completely awful. He explains very well, is always available to answer questions, and actually teaches concepts that are going to be useful for getting jobs. He's great. 10/10.
The homework assignments are vague and markedly more difficult than the in-class problems, as are the tests. He only has 1 hour of office hours per week so it's difficult to get help if you're struggling. There aren't sufficient resources to understand the material if you don't get it immediately, and the resources are difficult to navigate.
Professor Handy is a great professor who does not deserve his Rate my Professor score. He cares about his students and is very available for help outside of class. His tests and assignments are fair and he provides a long formula sheet, so if you put the time into learning the content and use the available resources, you will succeed in his class.
Guy is an absolute jabroni. Can’t teach, ridiculously hard/unclear assignments and tests, very few learning resources, not easy to follow, doesn’t like to compromise on grades.
barely any resources, lectures are not useful for the hw or tests
Professor doesn't explain things poorly but at the same time it isn't made as clear as it could be. There are few ways to pull your grade up, so be thorough in assignments. The workload isn't heavy but the content takes time to grasp, especially when he makes it more conceptual. Tests aren't impossible but lean towards the difficult side.
Lecture slides are very organized with little to no mistakes, provides a long formula sheet for tests, takes the time to answer questions, and has a fairly organized Sakai page. Has a fair grading scale and drops the lowest homework grade. However, the tests lean towards the difficult side, and his lectures are not super engaging.
This is a class where the above-average UNC student will spend too much time on and not receive a worthy grade. Class averages were 70 and 73 for the two midterms, a student to teacher ratio of about 220 to 1 and one office hour a week. UNC leaves you with no other option for econ400 so if you are an econ major, good luck!
He doesn't deserve his bad grade but I can learn the material faster on my own than he teaches in lecture. He overcomplicates things. the lectures don't translate to the HW or exams very well. But He gives an exam study guide and the exam gives you a formula sheet so do that and easy A
Chris definitely does not deserve his low rating on here. He is one of the smartest professors I have had, and he is one of the few who are actually able to communicate that knowledge in a clear way. His 470 class was super organized with helpful assignments and exam practice questions. He is relatively tough, but you come out having learned a lot.
I will never take any classes with him again. He turned easy stat class into something extremely difficult. His lecture style was difficult to follow. Everyone complains about him. Unfortunately, he is the only ECON 400 that UNC has right now.
Prof Handy is one of my favorites here at UNC. He can be a little bit boring from time to time but the class was super manageable and he made the subject easy to understand through lots of in-class practice problems which helped the class period to fly by. He is very accommodating and grades with a clear, objective rubric.
I took 400 this semester. Let me tell you: It was a JOURNEY. Handy is a nice, caring, and smart guy. I always enjoyed speaking with him. However, the lectures over complicate otherwise simple topics. The hw and exam questions can be extremely obscure, because we have very few prep materials. It is possible to get an A but very tough. Tough class.
Chandy was a very nice professor but I felt like the exams never accurately described what we focused on in class. Gives lots of materials to practice with, it's very possible to get a good grade in here but you have to focus and make sure you study EVERYTHING because he will try to get you on something he only mentions once.
I took ECON 400 over the summer. Handy is willing to help his students and is good with communication. He also was good about posting practice materials (and incorporated practice problems into his lectures). Exams were a bit tricky at times and his lectures sometimes focused too much on tangential material, but overall I'd recommend his class.
Handy gets a bad wrap. As long as you pay attention in class and do the HW you're supposed to (i.e. watch pre-class videos, read/skim assigned readings), you'll be fine. He gives formula sheets for exams, records and posts all his lectures, and posts all his annotated slides. Super nice and willing to help; responsive on email and CampusWire.
This class is hard material but he does a great job with the class structure. There are lots of practice problems and he tries to answer all questions. He is very reasonable and understanding.
Dr. Handy is a nice, well-organized, accessible, and cute professor. Econ400 itself is hard, and he has already gave his best way for students to feel easier. Homework and textbooks are not enough, also need to know the definition, and spend time outside classes. Also I indeed like take his class again, but I choose Econ470 with another professor.
Handy is a solid professor and a total dilf. Handy is very knowledgeable and makes the lecture interesting, but can sometimes over complicate simple topics. R is used on some of the work, but he normally helps with the code. The test are hard but fair and doing well on them is possible and he gives fairly generous curve. He also had amazing calves.
His homework is too difficult! Many concepts are not taught in class, though office hour is helpful.
Chris Handy is a very very strong man. I can tell he works out by the size of his enormous biceps. While the class may be difficult, i get motivation that my hard work will pay off every time I look at his arms. I wish he would hold me. Overall great class.
This class was pretty hard. The homeworks were difficult and long, the tests were challenging, and his lectures were sometimes difficult to follow. I ended up supplementing his lectures with youtube videos (Organic chem tutor) just to understand the class, and that helped a lot. Just don't get behind and it should turn out alright!
This class is overall pretty boring but Handy was fair and clear about his expectations. There is a wide range of content in this course so understanding overall may feel surface level but his tests and homeworks don't expect more from you. His in class examples are helpful and he doesn't expect you to learn on your own.
I loved Handy in 400. He's a smart guy who knows what he is talking about. Handy is so great in part because he doesn't ever put his students below himself. He gets on the level of his students and makes learning the material very doable. I'm taking him again for 470 and would highly recommend him to anyone looking to take 400.
Homework was always very tedious to do. Exams for this essentially being a beginner stat class are still harder than should be. But if you want to do good in this class, you will. If you don't put in the time per week then you will fall behind and crash. Overall pretty decent course but frustrating at times.
Dr. Handy is an amazing person who really cares about students. His lectures can be a little complicated, though, and his exams are pretty difficult. Yet, he does his best to explain everything in detail and gives out numerous resources for students to complete assignments and prepare for exams.
Honors is the same workload, but offers more personal relationships with Handy and peers. Handy is funny, understanding, and even gave us cookies twice. Course is ambiguous and poorly structured, only giving a surface-level rundown of concepts taught more effectively in a stats course. Study the homework and do well on the heavily weighted exams!
He is kind, accessible & understanding. Explains things well tho slightly complicated. Problems in class are very similar to the exam. HW is hard but allows TA and peer help, and he gives extra credit. Only thing is that exams have more mc than problems, and each mc worths 3-4 points. Gives a decent curve. Definitely would take 470 with him!
Overall pretty good professor definitely doesn't deserve the hate he gets on here. Class can be challenging but if you put the work in you will be fine. Definitely go to class and don't fall behind and you'll be fine.
Really good professor. Very conscientious. The practice problems before the exam is very useful.
Handy is a cool guy. I think it must be what he teaches, but his lectures make him seem very robotic. Overall he outlines the content you need to know very well. Lots of exam practice problems and homework, all representative of the exams. I goofed off in the middle of the class (see my grade) but the material is very manageable.
Hard class, but Handy was a very good professor who made it manageable. Provided lots of resources to study for exams and his lectures were very clear.
Dr. Handy is great! Lectures are pretty boring but that's only because the content of ECON400 is boring. Weekly/bi-weekly HW is lengthy and first exam is most difficult (probability). Responds fast to emails and is very helpful and kind in office hours. Lectures at a good pace. Curves final course grades at the end of semester generously.
He is very caring but his lecture problems don't match the hw and exam rigor. I've made As in two other stats courses. Although these were the same concepts, I never scored over 65 on an exam. MC answers account for all common mistakes. I spent $240 for 8hrs of tutoring before the final just to make a 53. A 67% was a C+ with the curve this semester
Handy will feel cold on the surface. But he's a nice and caring guy. He doesn't intentionally make exam questions hard, super fast email responder, has pretty generous curves, and isn't too strict about things. But it is a bit hard to concentrate on his lectures and it feels very distant to me. It is a hard class and the office hours are very short
ECON 400 with Handy is the hardest Intro Stat class you'll ever take. That said, he's a great teacher with deep knowledge of the subject. Quickly responds with detailed explanations to questions online. Lectures can feel dry, but if you want to get into research through ECON, feels like this is the guy to take this class from.
As someone who struggled with math and statistics most of my life, this class was no different. Learning in class was fine, because he is an okay lecturer and spends extra time on people who don't get it. However, I struggled on all homework and exams. I felt like the material on those were much harder than anything we practiced.
Chris was a good lecturer and genuinely wanted to help everyone do their best in the class. That being said, Some of his test questions were terribly worded and often did not resemble hw or practice problems at all stylistically. Final was 75% based off of the last (and easiest) unit though so great bonus there.
Lectures gave little preparation or help for homework or exams. You know a class is bad when certain letter grades need to be curved by around 10-20 points at the end. It's not impossible to do well in this class but you will want to already have an extensive background in math/statistics that goes beyond the prerequisites for this course.
He is not a bad professor or person, but it does seem like the exams were a good bit harder than the practice. He assumes people have more of a background in stats than they do.
Dr. Handy is one of the best professors in UNC. He cares about his students and uses interesting examples in class. Stat class is unsurprisingly hard but it is worthy at the end. I would definitely take his other advanced econ class. Highly recommend!
Difficult material but not due to Professor Handy. The class is built for you to succeed but you need to stay engaged. Lots of examples and problems during class. Only weird thing is you have to use R code for homework assignments and he doesn't really teach you how to use it.
Hard class-be sure to always do the pre-class vids and take good notes. He's a good professor (despite overestimating our background knowledge on topics at times) and really strives to give everyone all the tools to succeed. Great guy. Keep up w the classes and go to TAs for help on hw.
The professor is nice. I slept in his class, but he still treated me well. And the class material is not hard as long as you watch the pre-class videos and do the homework carefully. Though the attendance is counted, the class has recordings. I really cannot understand why there are students who dislike the class...
Great professor, had very clear lectures, and a much better choice than Guilkey. If you did the pre class notes you came into class with everything you needed to do that class' problems. Never went to office hours but any question that I asked on campuswire was answered fairly quickly by him or a ULA
I LOVED this professor! I honestly don't know how he doesn't have a higher rating. His lectures were great and easy to follow, and he always allowed you to ask questions in class. Yes, tests and assignments were hard, but ECON-400 is a hard class. Nothing insane, especially with how accessible he is outside of class.
Chris Handy is a kind, gentle, and extremely knowledgeable professor. I have taken both Econ 400 and 470 with this gem of a human being. While 470 remains the hardest class I have ever taken in my life, he has done absolutely everything to help me, and I truly appreciate him. Take his class if you can, you will not be disappointed.
470 can be confusing content but Handy does the best possible job explaining it and is always available to answer questions, the campus wire platform he uses is especially helpful. It's not the easiest class but if you have a math background it will be much easier. Tests could be challenging but there was a generous curve applied at the end.
The class is built for you to succeed you just have to try. I made the mistake of not trying for the first part and it almost cost me a D. He puts so much effort and shows that he really cares. Tests are worth a lot and make sure to do the homework, it's a lot like the test.
Nice professor, but a tough class. He is super inspirational, caring, and accessible, definitely take ECON470 with him too.
Handy is a nice guy and a decent lecturer; however, his exams were extremely hard to the extent that he will add up to 10 adjustment points to each Midterm and then add something like a 10% curve for your final grade, and still it would not be enough for you to get an A-. Be prepared to dedicate a LOT of your time to this class as it will be tough.
Best lecturer I've ever had. He is so clear, concise and offers lots of practice. You can tell he's an expert in the subject and is really passionate too. He is very easy to reach outside of class and on Campuswire. The topics on midterm 2 can be a little confusing but asking questions in recitation and doing practice in EconAid Center really help.
470 is a very difficult class, but Handy is a great professor. Was very generous with curves and final grade cutoffs. Also was very accessible outside of class.
This class wasn't bad, but I found it more challenging because there was less intuitive content and more data science heavy. Econ concepts that I normally find interesting weren't a big part of the course. The exams were pretty challenging, definitely study a lot and do practice problems and redo homework. Caring guy though and very accessible.
Prof Handy is a knowledgable and caring professor, and his grading is very fair, with a generous curve for final grades. His lectures are extremely easy to follow, and are very clear and straightforward. The homework and exam practice problems are very representative of the exams, so if you do those, you'll likely do well in the class.
Definitely one of the hardest classes I've taken at UNC. Show up to the lectures, stay on top of the material, and you will be fine. Watch the pre-recorded videos before class. I'd highly recommend doing all of the practice problems before exams as well as redoing the homework; they prepare you best for what you might see on the exam.
He is incredibly organized, and he gives you all the resources you need to succeed. All you need to do is put in the effort. Just take his class.
I was dreading taking 400 because I'vge heard awful things about 400 and 470 but this was easily one of my favorite classes this semester because of handy. I LOVE HIM. He is incredibly kind and intelligent and does his best to teach each concept in several ways ti appeal to diff students' learning styles. I hope he has the best life ever
ECON 400 is a tough subject but he makes it so digestable and is excellent at explaining every topic. Cares so much about students and outstandingly organized and helpful teacher. Great guy.
ECON 400 is neither an easy course nor really an economics course as it is more Statistics Part 2 but Handy is a great professor who explains things well and is incredibly accessible outside of class and on campus wire. Make sure you put the work in and use your resources as the class is difficult but manageable.
Great professor. Well structure course. Lots of help and practice problems. Cares about students' success.
Great professor, and loves statistics. it's just a hard class. He wants you to do well, and all the resources are there, you just have to put in the work. But don't miss an exam, even for a legitimate reason, you can't make it up and that puts a lot of pressure on the final. but I found this class very interesting and would take it again.
Prof Handy clearly cares about teaching his students. This class was very difficult for me and my performance was poor, although I can really only blame myself. If you want to learn this subject I would recommend taking this class but you will probably need to put in a decent amount of effort.
ECON400 is a hard class but Prof Handy gives you tons of practice problems and materials to succeed. He's very accessible outside class with Campuswire. Performance on exams is pretty low, with class averages being around 70/71, but he curves the course at the end of the semester to compensate. Overall I would recommend him for this course!
This class was super tough but Professor Handy is a great teacher. He does videos that you must watch before class that are about 15 minutes or so before each class then goes back over it in class alongside practice problems. He does a curve at the end of the class as the tests are very hard. Overall just a great teacher teaching a tough course.
Great professor who cares about his students but the course itself is kind of dry. Exams were a lot tougher/more conceptual than in-class problems and homework assignments, so make use of office hours if you can!
Awesome professor and one of my favorite classes this semester. The smaller class size gives a lot more ops to ask questions imo! The class is weighed heavily on exams. But don't be scared because they reflect the class material and are fair. He's knowledgeable and super willing to answer any questions to help you out. Take this class if you can!
Everyone LOVES and is OBSESSED WITH Chris Handy. The way he structured 400 made a difficult class much more digestible. He offered plenty of resources to help students learn, was very organized, and was generous with the curve at the end. I'm walking away from 400 with a strong foundation in statistics and I highly recommend taking a class w/ him!
Couldn't pay that much attention to stats bc I was distracted by his shoulders
Really hard content. Solid teacher. Sligthly overrated but I liked him.
Professor Handy is by far my favorite econ professor. His willingness to work with his students and adjust exam difficulty/curve is greatly appreciated. Lectures are thorough and he provides plenty of resources. 470 is definitely a hard class, but as long as you put in the effort, there's no reason you can't learn a bunch and get a good grade.
He was a great professor. Super accomodating and no questions were stupid to him which was great. I personally did not use all the resources available like his office hours, but I'm sure they would've been great. He was really quick to reply on campuswire which was a life saver. You can tell he really wants us to succeeed. Would 100% take again.
Professor Handy is a great professor who puts a lot of effort into teaching this course and gives us a lot of practice material as well. However, the content is hard and the exams were not easy. But he is very accessible outside of class and always does his best to answer questions when asked. Would definitely take a class with him again.
Dr. Handy is great with explaining the topics in this difficult course and being available through office hours, after class, and on Campuswire to answer any questions you might have. While it can seem to be boring, he does a good job of using real-life studies and examples to make econometrics more meaningful.
One of the best professors I've had. Despite challenging material, he makes topics digestible. He is accessible (Campuswire) and answers questions in a way that students (not just economic experts) can understand. Exams are challenging but representative of class material (lots of practice problems). Attend office hours for help on assignments.
So nice professor, well-structured class materials and willing to take his class again!
G.O.D.
Genuinely god bless this man, his class is ROUGH you will have to pay attention and take notes to learn the concepts. BUT there's only 6 homework and 3 tests throughout the whole class. AND he curves the final grades so that the average course grade is in the middle of the 'B' range and adjusts grades accordingly #stats. He is EXTREMELY helpful.
Chris is a great professor, yet the classes he teaches have hard material. He cares about students' success and will curve the grades to adjust to the class distribution.
Chris Handy is a moral and altruistic person. He shows that a man can be absolutely shredded and embrace a nerdy fascination with economics. What distinguishes Dr. Handy from his contemporaries is his infectious sense of humor; He's undeniably witty. His ability to spread laughter effortlessly is a rare and invaluable gift. Do the practice tests!
I enjoyed learning under Professor Handy for both ECON 400 and 470. He teaches remarkably well, frequently pausing during lectures to see if any student has questions. He is also very responsive on CampusWire, always answering students' questions. The practice problems he offered before every exam were very helpful in succeeding in his courses!
I have had Dr. Handy twice, and I wish I could take more. He is kind and fair, and while his class is hard, he acknowledges that we are all upper-level econ students and curves final grades heavily to reflect that. His lectures are well-designed so students can best grasp the material. He is also so intelligent and can answer every question well.
Dr. Handy objectively lays everything out properly, but misses the "engaging" mark. Between spoonfeeding us coding content and dropping two of six assignments, I found myself ignoring the class until exams. Handy comes across as a robot presenting his same research papers with a few trick questions on repeat. Mildly more difficult 400 downgrade.
Great professor. His arms can be slightly distracting but that is okay. He curves at the end because I definitely did notttt get an actual B, I'll tell you that. All of the resources to get an A are there, he gives videos to watch before lectures, practice exams, practice homework, all of the grading keys. I just fell off mid semester lol
Great professor, the class itself isnt that hard either but Professor Handy is by far the best professor I've had here at UNC, and his grading is clear and he curves the class as well.
Dr. Handy is my favorite. I do not have a strong background in math, but my grades are decent because I spend over 6 hours on class each week, not including the lecture. Both 400 and 470 are quite challenging, but if you want an A, the time you invest in studying will pay off. Besides, he is very caring, encouraging, responds quickly on campuswire.
Class makes me feel like I'm being put to sleep. The professor talks for 90 minutes, yet I leave more confused. I've turned to Khan Academy and The Organic Chemistry Tour for help. When I'm lost, I can't even ask questions because I have no idea what he's talking about. He rambles on without engaging. He's not cut out to teach, more like a tutor.
Somehow manages to make the material harder than it is. Homework can be a bit difficult and definitely requires studying outside of class. Tests are basically the same as homework in terms of difficulty, so if you struggle on homework you will struggle on the tests.
Dr. Handy explains content clearly and thoroughly in lectures, and even provides pre-class videos that cover the material in brief. The pace of the class is quick, but if you've taken AP Stats or STOR 155 there isn't much new content. Test averages were mid-70s despite the tests covering similar content to class and the review materials.
Handy is a very reasonable person, he curves everyone's grades at the end of the semester, very clear lectures, highly recommended ECON professor!
He's a good professor but lectures can be a bit boring. I kind of just suck generally with numbers so look at pre-class videos they're very helpful. Textbook is good but take it with a grain of salt when reading it. Would take again but be prepared for a hard class if you haven't taken AP Stats or STOR-155
Dr. Handy is my favorite professor I've had since being at UNC. He's very clear with expectations and lets us know plainly how we can succeed. His pre-class videos are helpful so you can work on just practice problems in class. The formula sheet is very helpful and he is easy to reach on CampusWire. I'm excited to take another class with Dr. Handy!
Handy is the peak
Two midterms, 20% each, final 30%, extra 10% for highest exam, 5% participation, 15% homework. HWs included R-studio which made them difficult. Watch pre-class videos to understand content or else you'll be lost in class. Posts 40-question exam reviews before each exam but almost too long to be helpful. Huge curve at end bc of low averages.
Econ 400 is a hard class, but Professor Handy makes it doable. His lectures are nothing crazy or exciting, but he covers the material that will be on exams. He also gives sooo many practice problems which is super helpful. Do those and you'll be fine!
Good professor
Unless you've completely dropped the ball, you will pass. I did the absolute bare minimum, pass failed the class, and scraped by with a PS on the transcript. HEAVY curve. Nice guy. You will be okay.
Professor Handy's class can be challenging, but his thoughtful approach and helpful resources like Campuswire make it manageable. unstuck ai was a great study aid alongside the practice problems.
Handy is super accessible on campuswire which is really helpful. Once the homework assignments start they never end. Watch the pre class videos so you don't get lost in lecture, but he pauses lecture to ask for questions, and he's available during office hours. Exams are fair and practice problems are on par with exam difficulty. Lovely curve!
This guy is a chiller. He loves econometrics and I felt engaged in the content, somehow. Hard class, just put some effort in.
Memorizing how to use the equation sheet can get you an A but it will be a lot more work than if you just sit and think about what's really going on with the math. Handy is very good at decyphering students' questions.
Not sure if it's just the material, but nothing Handy said made sense. He seems like a really nice guy but I was lost when it came to the content - and so were my friends in the class. We still managed to get pretty good grades, but going into 470 I am concerned about my level of understanding.
Prof. Handy is an awesome professor. Homeworks and in-class examples were consistent with test material, and he did a fantastic job explaining the material. He also curves your final grade in the class, not to mention has generous grading thresholds. If you put the work in and go to class you will not only learn a lot, but do well in the class.
Goated prof
straight to the point, solid professor
Honestly about as difficult as I expected a more upper level econ class to be, not unfair at all, but you have to do the homework and study for the exams to do decent overall
I wouldn't say his lectures are engaging, but he is very good at making the content digestible. He answers questions regardless of how stupid it was, and is accessible outside of class. Pay attention, do practice problems, and go to recitation. Easier if you took AP Stat. Class gets harder as it goes though so you have to stay locked.
Great professor, very hard class
Any class that Handy is teaching is going to be hard, but he is the most organized and helpful professor in the econ department. His lectures can get boring, but he doesn't waste time outside of stuff you genuinely need to know or review.
Took 470 after also taking 400 with Handy. 470 is much harder but he does a good job of explaining content as clearly as possible - one of the most articulate econ professors. He records lectures so it's helpful to go back and watch them to review. He communicates well with his students and is very accessible on CampusWire. His curve is generous.
One of the GOAT in the ECON department. He is always patient with students. He curved a lot for your final grade. I got an 82 for it, and it is an A-.
He makes information very accessible but you really have to stay caught up and engaged in all materials to do slightly well on exams. Certain exams can be different from practice problems just study way ahead of time!!
Handy is a very good econ professor; his class and Canvas page are organized well, making studying for exams easy and structured. Lectures are nothing special, and the homework can be a bit long, but most of the grade comes from exams. His study guide is very helpful and he CURVES so dont be scared by the low averages my grade went from a C to a B.
If you're not particularly strong in math the course is exceptionally difficult. Handy is an amazing speaker who is always available through various resources, I enjoyed lectures even if it made no sense. Final grade curve is very generous, I think a C+ was a 55 most recently. If you're looking for more application based info, take handys course.
I have taken other classes that had content which overlapped with 400, and Professor Handy was able to explain concepts I struggled with before in a clear and concise way. He is clearly familiar with learning methods (unlike some professors who are an expert in the subject but don't know how to teach it). Very willing to help if you are confused.
Hard class but great professor.
Brutal class. Lectures are confusing and hard to follow—I stopped paying attention and just taught myself after class. Office hours helped, but I waited too long. Pre-class videos and the textbook are useless. Exams are awful and nothing like the practice, which has 150+ separate questions and is super tough. Only the curve saved me.
Really terrible. The lecture is too terrible
Handy was a good professor, 400 is just really difficult material. He does typically curve pretty significantly at the end of the semester.
Professor Handy is approachable and kind but also highly organized and skilled as a professor. He provides numerous resources to help students succeed in this course and is happy to answer questions outside of class.
Very straightforward lectures - tells you what you need to know! Very reasonable grading policy, and give extra credit. Love his class and genuinely cares about each student (answers all your online questions if you are confused)
Most organized professor I've ever had. Provides so many resources to help you succeed. The content can be conceptually tough but he wants to see you suceed and is very accessible for questions. Tests are fair and grading criteria is fair/straightforward. Definitely would recommend. Students that have taken any stats class before have advantage.
Prof. Handy is a great teacher who made difficult material in ECON 400 easy to understand. His tests are fair and reflect homework and in class activities. Be sure to take advantage of his videos explaining concepts and come to class prepared or you may feel overwhelmed. The lecture moves quickly into polls as he expects you have watched the videos
I'm honestly confused how he has good reviews on here. His lectures are absolutely terrible and he makes the exams ridiculously hard. He may curve the class, but it doesn't feel like you are actually achieving anything when you are just relying on the curve. Terrible.
Do yourself a favor and do not take this class with him. TAs are 100% writing the good ratings. I will say he is smart, like every other professor here, but he is an awful lecturer and purposely makes the exams hard by trying to trick you. Least favorite class I have ever taken here.
I'm not sure if it was because i've never taken any type of statistics class before, but I did not follow a single thing he said. The lectures felt really long and the exams were hard. He seems very nice tho. I would NOT recommend taking this class if you have never taken a statistics class before. There should be a stats pre-req for this course.
This course is basically an intro stats course (like AP stats). Dr. Handy is very good at explaining things clearly in a way easy to understand. He is very knowledgeable, approable, kind, and generous about grades. All of the class materials are extremely well-organized.
Handy is one of the most organized Econ professors out there. He makes studying so easy and has so many different resources that people can take advantage of to learn, and even takes the time to answer every single online question a person will post. He breaks down hard concepts and actually makes them understandable.
Assignment workload was high. His organisation is great, records his lectures, posts worked solutions, good attention to detail. Not sure why there are 1 star reviews. If you've done stats before it's not a difficult course but hard to score high as small mistakes are costly. He's quite flexible and lenient, gives partial credit for wrong MCQ's.
Handy provides every resource needed to succeed in a moderately challenging class. Tests are tricky but fair, and homework load is reasonable (1 assignment/week takes ~2/3 hours). Watch the couple of 5/10 min pre-class vids he gives before class and don't chatgpt every single hw like half the people and it's really straightforward.
Lectures were not interesting in the slightest. Homework was difficult, but he held office hours in the econ aid center and would answer any questions. Mostly a boring class and requires prior statistics knowledge to keep up with how quickly he goes through topics. 200 person lecture with no connection to the professor. Curve is lifesaving.
Handy is an awesome guy with a great personality. My grade was definitely a lack of understanding on my part, and not his fault. Was a very difficult class, never scored above a 60 on any of the tests. Curve saved me.
Econ 400 is a hard class, but Professor Handy is not a bad teacher. He does his best to make the information digestible, and honestly, you just have to push through how hard it is and be willing to work and use his resources as much as you can and you'll be fine.
