Excellent professor. I had him for Development of US History II during the Summer 2015 Session. Class is very engaging and interesting; I definitely learned a lot of cool stuff. If you need to take a history class, take it with Professor Hayes! You won't regret your decision, I promise!
I loved Professor Hayes, not really into history but made lectures easy to understand. I had to read about 2 books for 3-4 page papers. Gives a study guide for the test, if you take notes if class or have the textbook should do fine.
These review makes me think he self-rates, Hayes is SO BORING and extremely dry. 2 exams and two papers, which is good, but he keeps you the full three hours for most classes and you NEED to take tons of notes in order to do well. Definitely not my favorite professor.
Despite the subject being a bit dry and that it's a 3 hour course, Hayes tries his best to keep the class awake. 2 papers, and he gives clear comments on what you should improve on. He also holds writing conferences one week before the final is due, so if you follow his comments, you can get a good grade on your papers.
Professor Hayes was an awesome lecturer. His casual teaching style made it easy to be engaged in class. I took a lot of notes the whole time he lectured and it was good enough to study for my exams and write papers. 2 papers and 2 exams. Dont have to study until the night before if you paid attention in class. I never read the textbook.
I hate history but Prof Hayes made it very interesting. He can be very sarcastic, but overall his teaching style is very engaging. Exams are easy cause he gives you a study guide. Don't need the book, i never read it. Definitely take this class if you need another writing AND/OR history class .
Horrible and rude personality, worst attitude towards teaching. Keeps you for the entire 3 hours. Participation is heavy. If you don't participate you will not receive an A in participation. Has a sign in sheet in the beginning and middle of class so he knows if you leave. 2 papers, midterm, final,& participation are only grades. Don't take.
Prof Hayes knows how to lecture without making students feel bored. He is approachable in-class and out of class for any questions and even has a 1:1 writing conference a week before the final drafts of the papers are due. There are 2 papers and 2 midterms; read the book and take notes in class for the best results
Readings were not horrible, but worse than most of my classes. You need to go to class because attendance is strict and because the power points he posts do not cover all the material. To do well on the 2 exams you need to do the study guide and read the free textbook. To do well on the 2 essays you need to read the textbook and go to conferences.
2 essays & 2 exams. Exams are very easy because he gives you a study guide for each. Just look up each term in the index of the textbook and you'll do great. For essays, there's multiple drafts. You must go to class because it's mandatory and the slides do not cover everything. He is very sarcastic but that makes the 3 hr lecture bearable.
Amazing prof. Smart and helpful. Easy grader.
Imfao. I didnt notice that I just got an A. To be honest, his electronic ban is very ANNOYING and you need to physically show up in every class in order to get a perfect attendance grade. Exam questions are quite easy and only need tiny amount of time to study for.
This man is ridiculous. He gave very low score on a open ended exam. Lots of students were not labor studies major and he surely not care about that. he was doing a poor job on teaching, most of his lecture was unrelated to the exam and the paper. good luck if you believe those rated him high.
Only 2 essays and 2 tests including the final. Pretty straightforward in his teaching. I showed up, wrote down everything he said because his slides aren't very descriptive and didn't seem to have too much trouble. Never studied for the tests and got high B's. The information is basic history that everyone should already know.
He checks attendance TWICE during our three-hour lecture. No electronics in class and you have to participate. The lectures are boring and repetitive. I don't recommend this professor at all.
No text book! not hard. go to class, take notes and you will be fine.
Really learn a lot. You best choice for Labor study 201 and probably 202. The class covers some funny stories, I recommend you to go to class, because it has two attendances for one class, and participation is 15%. Two essay and two exams only, if you really study, it is easy.
Beware . Hard grader for essays . I would rather take different professor.
This class grade comprises of 2 exams and 2 papers. The TA's are very helpful in telling you how to make your paper an A paper and the exams are straight from the study guide he gives you. Although attendance is mandatory, don't worry about paying attention during lectures because all info can be found online.
Probably the best class you can take for the writing requirement. Hayes class is essentially a history class with a couple papers. There are 3 drafts for each paper, with peer review after the first one and Professor/TA comments for the second. Exams are straightforward, just study the review sheet he gives you beforehand. Pretty funny guy too.
Perfect choice for WCR / WCD core course. easy class (basic stuff from high school) & you learn at same time.
Hayes is a really chill, interesting lecturer. He takes really boring topics and makes them seem a little less boring or downright hilarious. Attendance/participation are taken very seriously, be warned. Your essay and test grades depend on the harshness of your grader, which can be hit or miss. Overall a solid wcd/wcr choice.
He's knows how to keep people interested in his class and is a very good lecturer but not sure if I would recommend him only because your grade really depends on the grader (TA) you get and whether if they're a hard grader or not which is a little unfair.
Not an easy A class. Attendance is mandatory and he makes you work for it. Tough grader when it comes to the essays and the exams are all essay questions as well. If you're not a strong writer I recommend another class.
Professor Hayes is such an interesting lecturer for a history professor. I do not like American history one bit, but he transformed it and makes it interesting that I can actually be enticed in a 3-hour 40-minute summer course. If he taught science courses, I would've passed with flying colors, but sadly he does not. AMAZING PROFESSOR, FUNNY!!
Boring. Says he won't keep you the whole 3 hours. He lied. Attendance is mandatory and he does a sign in sheet as soon as class starts AND towards the end so you have to be there the entire time. Super easy though. Gives review sheets for exams there are two and two papers. Super strict on phones and laptops he will call call you out.
This 3 hrs class is really what I need for the writing core course. Unlike other writing courses, this is one is much more easy. and it cover American history, many of you learn it in high school.
Hayes is one of my favorite profs I've ever had at Rutgers. His classes are mandatory and very, very lecture heavy with a lot of handwritten note taken. No electronics are allowed. But his teaching style is kinda entertaining. He has that dry sense of humor that'll guarantee you chuckle a few times per class. He is a fair grader on essays and exams
Don't understand the somewhat low score for him. Yes the content will be kind of dull, its literally 17th century history. But as a person, he has a unique dry humor that's honestly hilarious. He also comes off very stern but he's actually a reasonable professor. Attendance matters a lot, as well as participation. Tries to remember everyones name.
He's chill but this class is so much reading it is insane, and almost all of the material you will read is incredibly boring!! I am taking this class during the summer so we just have discussions, 2 exams (writing), and 1 paper. The exam prompts are stuff you can only write one page about yet he expects around 4 pages. Class is easy, but tedious.
Professor Hayes is a nice, chill guy who wants his students to learn and is willing to help anyone in need of clarification. The class material is pretty boring, and there's also a good amount of reading but his exams/papers are straightforward and graded very fairly. I'm taking this in the summer so there's 2 exams, 1 paper, and easy discussions.
The class can sometimes be boring, but he's a really caring/nice professor who truly wants students to learn the material. He is funny and a very fair grader, also he gives extra credit at the end of the semester. There is a good amount of boring readings, but not terrible. Overall, class is an easy B, but you need to put in some effort for an A.
Does not develop interest in the subject matter which is a shame for such an interesting topic (U.S Labor course). Contrary to popular belief, he is rude and does not care about his students. Expect to have everyones camera off using zoom calls and have class be delayed 10 minutes for no reason. He assumes everyone cheats and will assume the worst
(had him for virtual class) He was a nice dude, and definitely cares about his students. The class itself is a solidly easy B in my experience, but I am not sure how you would get an A in this class. The grading was very ambiguous and confusing (at least with my TA). Work load is small.
Probably the worst professor I had. Does not care about his students, does answer emails. Had to put in a lot of effort. When he does answer emails, he is very rude and makes it clear he does not care. TAs were ok. Do not recommend hayes and there is a lot of work, and often accuses people of cheating for no reason.
He is boring and rude. doesn't reply emails until a week after you sent. He accused students of cheating because of using materials that he does not give. Very bad professor !!!
Professor Hayes was a pretty cool professor. Although the lecture material was a bit boring he still made it easy to take in. Make sure you go to class and take notes since its mandatory and helpful for writing papers. The papers themselves were easier than expos. 4 papers, 2 of which you write a rough draft then a final draft. Overall good class.
Hayes is the worst Professor that I have seen at Rutgers. Avoid! unless it is required.
Worst Professor Ive ever had at Rutgers. Im a senior, so Ive had quite a few. I never met a professor who wants his kids to fail so badly. His energy is demonizing. Calls out people loudly for no reason if theyre looking anywhere other than the lecture. Will put you through academic integrity cases that will follow you through out your life.
I personally thought this class was easy because of the TA's. I would recommend talking to them for every paper because they're the ones grading most of them and will tell you what they're looking for in your paper. The Professor is fine. His lectures were okay. His paper prompts were worded weirdly so talk to the TA's or Prof for clarification.
If you read the parts of the textbook that are relevant to the prompt and incorporate those facts and do some analysis the essays should be easy. The discussion posts for the class are really easy if you try a bit. Should ask him or TAs (whoever your assigned) to read over the paper because their comments show how you can get at least a B
Hayes is your average professor: Nice dude, kind of boring lectures, but overall not bad - just not "amazing". I'd def reccomend him for the course itself, but I think it being a history course/having weekly readings/discussions/a couple essays just makes the course seem worse. It's an average course IMO, should be able to pass it w/o much issue.
Don’t do it to yourself. TA’s are tough graders and overall, the class is boring and the lectures don’t provide good information.
This professor was terrible, he had heavily inconsistent grading and refused to listen if you asked him about it, he did not accept late work, and he does not care about his students. He would tell the students to reach out if they need help or have questions but when I reached out he was very rude and told me I was wrong and gave me no help.
Christopher Hayes is a really caring and great person. However, since the grades given out are done by not him it makes the grading feel extremely skewed. In my experience, other graders will give lots of points just for handing something in. While others nit-picked every detail. If they really cared that much they should teach expository writing.
The professor himself was pretty good, but grading depends on the TA more than anything. Some care too much and others can be handed a coloring book and compliment your writing abilities. Lectures were essentially useless and you could do any of the papers by skimming through the textbook and finding quotes to use.
Solid teacher who is passionate about the topics he is teaching. His teaching is very lecture heavy but as long as you don't fall behind hes pretty easy to keep up with. The class is solely graded off of history essays, which can get annoying. Overall great guy and would recommend.
For your own good, chose any professor besides Mr. Hayes. He tells unfunny jokes at the expense and embarrassment of the students, and seems to enjoy doing so. He presents the history in an extremely politically bias way and condescending manner, which I found insulting and unprofessional. I wish the character limit here was as longer.
Professor Hayes seems very knowledgable and passionate about the information being taught in class. Had him for 201 and taking 202 currently, even though lecture is mandatory and attendance is taken, it's an enjoyable lecture. He also manages to add humor along the way, so the lecture always stays interesting and engaging.
The best thing about him is that he makes lectures really interesting: He's great at illustrating American history while also throwing in jokes to keep you paying attention. Conversely, he drills talks of academic integrity into your head so often that it genuinely seems like he's out to get you. I found him unapproachable as a result.
He gives great lectures, you have 4 papers and weekly discussions to do. You can do very well in his class if you do all your wk discussions which have no word count. Papers are 1300-1500 using infor posted for course or him. I don't think he grade unfairly but harshly because in a college level course, he expect college quality. Overall, great
Took it as a 3-hour lecture and he rarely goes over 2 hours. He's a really good lecturer, awful jokes at times, but his lectures are enjoyable. Your grade is mainly made up of 4 essays, and no late homework is accepted. Homework is light, but he is a really tough grader when it comes to essays. If you aren't strong in writing, id skip this class.
The class is easy, but the professor is very boring. I had to write notes to keep myself awake during class. He talks at a slow pace and takes long pauses to lengthen the lecture. He would let us out an hour early, but the class could be shorter. The grade is based on participation and the Ta's overall.
The grading by the TAs is very harsh and the class does not discuss how to get better at writing despite being a writing class. To learn history, the lectures are really good for learning but the grading seems unfair and not well explained at all.
If you are taking US Labor, do not take this professor. I got a 30 percent on my participation grade because I disturbed his class once. I was maintaining a low A for most of the semester and the participation grade brought me down to a B. Stay away from this professor. He is terrible and rude. The TA's also graded the essays pretty harshly
One good thing: he made 3 hour lectures 2 hours or less. Do not take this class if you aren't ready to improve your writing. Got a 90/100 for participation even tho I was always quiet but I never raised my hand so maybe that's why? Even tho he never emphasized participation so that's a little unfair to me. Otherwise he's ok.
Lectures were around 2 hours each week and were pretty interesting. The 4 papers, 1300-1600 words each, were pretty straightforward as long as you cite everything correctly. However, the issue I have with this professor is his grading of participation. Gave me a 50% for "supposedly" leaving class early once, which never happened. Ambiguous grading.
he is horrible
Super petty and not understanding. Calls students out in class w/ sass, gives crazy low grades for essays or attendance/participation even if u go to class or write essays. Slow to emails. If you can assure that you will be perfect and no accidents you will do fine. however, if you can't 100% guarantee any slip ups he isn't flexible and ur fricked
Worst Professor I've ever had at Rutgers. He is not very nice and his class is incredibly boring. I didn't attach something to the exact proper place in canvas because I followed his directions and they were different from the way canvas had it set up. Instead of understanding he gave me no credit dropping my grade from an A to C. Also ignored me.
I have never met someone who wants his students to fail. He is an insufferable human being. He makes attendance mandatory but makes the class so unbearable that going to class is a struggle and something I had to force myself to do for a grade. I used to like History, but Prof. Hayes has genuinely made me loathe the subject. Any good reviewsarelies
This professor is the WORST professor I have ever had. He is unkind and uncaring and cold towards his students in general. he makes attendance mandatory only to be an absolute pain in class. He is against electronics like they're the plague. Like honestly not a single aspirational quality about this man. literally NONE. NONE.
I took his 3 hour lecture section, and it was a struggle every week to stay awake in his class. His lecture slides consists of one word bulletpoints, and his TAs grade the essays extremely harshly. He is also incredibly boring, uninspiring, and banned all electronics from his class. Do not take this class with Hayes - it is a struggle.
I took his class to fill reqs-- wouldnt advise anyone to take it unless you like history. Hayes is knowledgeable & smart. He doesnt allow tech AT ALL, bad if u do online notes. The lecture I had was 3 hours, but rarely went past 2. He was not the best w/ notes-- his slides were bullet points w/ 1-3 words, you'd rely on his speech for notes.
Just run
Not recommended
Participation 100% matters and show up on time or he'll put the attendance sheet away. I also advise you to utilize whoever is grading your papers heavily. I emailed my TA frequently and did well on my essays because I followed their advice.
If you plan on taking this course for credit, don't take it with Hayes. Professor Hayes has a very bad attitude towards his students and does not allow any sort of technology in his classroom (he will call you out in front of the class). While the work itself was not that difficult, the 3-hour lectures were very boring and he was insufferable.
I would take this class again for the content and learning, but,Professor Hayes was an unfortunate choice for this class. The real problem lies with the insufferable grading. Do not take this class if you are taking it with Hayes, this is a normal class, he is making it considerably harder for absolutely no reason
I would take this class but with someone else. I only took it to fulfill core requirements. It's also a 3-hour class and the prof makes the lecture boring. You also can't use or have any technology in class (phone, iPad, laptop, headphones, etc)
The assignments & tests that he gave in class were not particularly hard as long as you reviewed your notes and followed his study guides for the exams. However, he does not allow any form of technology in class, requires attendance, sounds condescending, and penalized the entire class when only a fraction used AI on the first essay.
He does not respond to emails promptly, or at all. He is a super difficult grader who even goes against the syllabus when grading, but when you bring it up to him, he will not respond. It is quite obvious he does not have a lesson plan for any lectures as he spends a good amount of time figuring out what to do or editing his slides mid-lecture.
Half of the class dropped out in the first half of the year due to giving everyone a 0 on an assignment worth 6% of final grade. Does not allow any electronics in class. And is the worst professor at the university. Surpirsed he hasnt been fired yet.
This class is easy but take another professor, he gave the entire class a 0 and expects you to memorize every single detail of the 100 page weekly reading. He allows no electronics and likes calling you out in front of the entire class. His TA's are the worst graders and they are not helpful. TAKE THIS CLASS WITH SOMEONE ELSE.
I took Dr. Hayes History of US Labor and Work class a year back and I honestly really enjoyed it. I don't think its crazy to ask that your students pay attention while your speaking and don't use electronics. He provides breaks and rarely even kept us the full 3 hours. He made the class interesting, I really enjoyed his class.
Definitely a harsh grader. Due to apparent plagiarism in prior classes all writing assignments are now in class and hand written. We had one based off a very specific part of a chapter and most of the class received a 0 for not understanding the material. The lectures are interesting but he does not give any grace on the grading.
He's a good guy, and an amazingly intelligent lecturer. If you do what you're supposed to (believe me he makes that very clear) by reading the 50 pages a week, do the study guides, and at least act like you are there to learn something by paying attention, taking notes, and maybe even talking, you'll be fine. and might even enjoy the class likeidid
I think he's a charismatic professor who is very knowledgeable and passionate about US history. He runs a no-tech class, which I liked a lot because it forces you to actually learn something. He is not scared of giving people 0s if they don't heed his warnings to read the 50 pages he assigns every week. Participate and he for sure will grow on you.
Hayes as a professor is great. Very dry sense of humor and you cannot use technology at ALL in his class, but he makes the material fun and often ends class early. The class is tough, though. Reading every single page of the textbook thoroughly is a must every week, and there are bi-weekly essays that must be written by hand in class.
A fantastic professor who encourages discussion/grades fairly. The class, shortened from 3 to 2 hours (by his choice), involves in-class writing to ensure originality against AI. His weekly 50-page readings are necessary, but his engaging teaching style/support for hard work make the class great. Recommend if you LOVE history/need writing class.
All electronic devices, including computers and phones, must be turned off during the three-hour class. Be prepared for extensive reading assignments and periodic quizzes or written work at each session. The professor maintains a strict approach in the classroom, consider enrolling in a different section with another instructor
Please don't take this class First, no electronic class, sit for an hour with 10 minutes break then keep going or in-class writing. Read article before each class, but the in-class writing is based on different material as you read as homework. The class is so boring that also make people sleepy. The PPTs are handed out, but there are useless.
Class focuses 110% on slavery, he doesn't talk about anything else. Take only for SAS core reqs, pair with 202 labor. Professor takes class too seriously, nobody goes to Rutgers for history. 12 50pg chapters are required cause midterm/final include random topics from chapters, dont have to read 4 quizes. No phones, 3 hours. Not hard, but annoying.
Honestly just go to class and you'll be fine. Barely did the readings and still got by with an A. People don't do well because they don't pay attention in class. If you know how to write take the class but if u can't write don't bother.
I don't get why people didn't like him... just pay attention in class and you'll get a good grade. People are just mad they failed because they didn't show up or didn't listen. Unintentionally funny guy that made topics that could be boring, interesting. I learned so much I didn't know before. Ignore the bad reviews, take this class!
Lots of reading anda really tough grader
Grades very arbitrarily on the writing. Very writing-heavy; no multiple-choice on any exams. There is a lot of reading for this class, but it wasn't the worst class I have taken here. He's a nice guy just harsh at the writing grade.
You're graded by either Hayes or the TA. There is no certain grading criteria used- you just get random points off on your writings with no explanation. He didn't provide good feedback when I asked him how to improve. I'll get an A or B, but I didn't feel in control of my grade. Not horrible if you have to take him but avoid if you can.
Some of these reviews are ragebait. His lectures are decent and he is funny at times. However, almost every assignment is a handwritten essay (even exams). His grading definitely seems arbitrary and doesn't make sense. Also, I don't like his no-tech policy, but I understand why he does it. He's fine, I guess. Do the readings, and you'll be okay.
