Calculus 2. He gives very little homework, grades very liberally. Take this guy and come to class, and you'll do well-
First rate teacher. I have had math phobia all my life, and this guy definitely helped me through. Come to every lecture, do your homework, participate, and you'll be just fine. A great instructor whose class I highly recommend.
Good Guy. He is the nicest dude eva. Math nerd and knows way to much. Do his homework... understand concepts and get an A.
A very nice and cool guy. He's such a math nerd. He doesn't use a lot of examples though, but he's always there to help you.
I hate math and he made it easier...and he will not fail you if you go to class and pass one test
Great teacher, easy grader, and is such a nerd. Highly recommended.
If math classes get u bored, take his! He is so goofy that it is funny and he tells the worst jokes that you can't help but laugh and stay entertained. He is very flexible about late assignments
his tests are easy. he lets you turn in hw late too
Chris Heckman is the man! ...despite him wearing those short shorts everyday. His tests are mind numbingly easy. He explains everything very well and is very relaxed when it comes to homework. With the extra credit he offered on his tests i finished the co
Heckman brings a little mathematical humor into the classroom. Very funny!
Prof. Heckman was totally helpful during his office hours -- I enjoyed his class thoroughly, and even now, years later, I remember how good he was!
Best Calc professor ASU has! Made Calc two very understandable, and fun. Always came to class ready to teach along with a smile. A shame he doesn't teach Calc three, told me even he doesn't understand it! If you have any problems at all with Calc or any math subject take Chris's class you will be very happy that you did!
Do not take this class! So dissapointing and he's new at teaching it. I spent weekends teaching myself everything he went over. And what sucks is that it's EASY and FUN stuff but he babbles on and on so you miss the point and totally fall asleep. If u have the time to teach yourself go for it. Otherwise you'll look as lost as everyone else in class
he is nice....gives a lot of extra credit on tests...only complain i have is sometimes he babbles a lot...go to his reviews....won't be identical problems he discusses in the reviews but similar....recommend him
He's a really dorky guy but he makes it really clear what is going to be on every test. The homework comes straight from his notes. It's an easy class just because of his teaching and tests.

As others said, he is very clear and helpful. He is able to answer any question on different levels of student understanding. The class subject, linear algebra, was simply a little abstract for me, but he makes it possible.
I actually do like him. He's made some cool VP tables. He's better than just teaching yourself with the book (because the book is useless). He gives less webwork than other teachers. He has a generous grade curve. He's not great at explaining things but at least he doesn't have an accent. Wish he explained the why instead of just the how.
a damn good teacher. he's a bit of a nerd, but isn't every calculus teacher? one of the rare teachers with no foreign accents. i thoroughly enjoyed his class. i would definitely recommend him!
Great teacher! He's kind of nerdy but an awesome teacher that knows his stuff. His weekly homework is fairly easy and the tests are pretty easy too. He's a very fair grader and no one should have a problem getting an A or B in his class. He is very clear and speaks great english with no accents. Take his class
Heckman is percise and clear on all the content he teaches. You might find yourself sleeping in his class from time to time but he knows his stuff. Generous & easy HW assignments, ww is easy enough, and actually let us vote on the 3rd exam. Take him, you won't regret it. :D
Heckman is very clear when he's explaining concepts and he doesn't try to trick students on his exams which is great.
Go to class he tells you exactly what he expects of you for tests. He makes you do like 2 problems a week in written homework. The rest is Web Works which he helps with during reviews for tests. Extremely clear and an amazing teacher.
he's a good teacher. he gives tons of examples in the notes. and he's a dork.
Great professor! He is a dork and makes goofy jokes occasionally, but explains things very well. Lets you know what will be on tests (which are not in testing center). Very helpful in office hours. To get an A you do not have to be that smart/annoying kid in class. Signing up for classes I first look to see what he is teaching. AMAZING PROF!!!
HECKMAN IS THE MAN!!!! I don't why students in my class were bashing on him, but he was the best math teacher I had so far at ASU. HE SPOKE ENGLISH! HAHAHA! plus he was a nice man and the material was crystal clear! The homework took like 5 minutes to do not even! I have to say that it was an easy A! TAKE HIM!
This class is pretty straight forward and not as hard as I thought it would be. Heckman is a nice/funny guy. Unlike many other math teachers at ASU, you can actually understand him! Exams are exactly like the homework/quizzes. If you do the homework and show up for class, there is no reason why you would not get a good grade in this class.
I think this sums it up: I wish he taught my physics class.
By FAR the best math teacher I've ever had. Go to lecture once and you understand everything. He keeps things very simple and is as fair as can be. Wish he taught all my math classes.
Does not know material. Taught himself as he was teaching us. Very confusing teacher, shows the basic examples on the board during class an then puts the most complex versions on the tests and final.
Heckman is awesome! He makes sure the entire class is comprehending the material before moving on. His homework assignments are easy and tests are exactly what he covers in class. I loved going to his class, and he really knows the material. Plus he's got jokes.
very helpful
Don't let the smiley face fool you: I couldn't stand his class. He is easy, helpful and clear to a fault. Drags along the slowest students so doesn't cover a lot of material. Painfully slow class. I feel like I learned very little, but got an A. Exams insultingly easy, especially since they all came from review sheets, just with different numbers.
I've only had him for 2 weeks and I don't understand one word that comes out of his mouth. All I hear is blah blah blah. I've always gotten A's in math, so I'm not stupid. He is just a really bad teacher.
Not the most interesting math class.
The class is really easy. He doesnt explain much in detail, saying it's for the "harder class". All notes are done on powerpoint and its more reading than math. Its not hard if you are good at math in the first place, but its a sort of confusing class and he doesnt help.
Attendance is mandatory and he makes you sign a sheet also has weekly homework thats only about 5 problems. Dont need the book unless you think it will help you understand better but he goes over everything in class. Really boring but good study guides for tests except for the one for the final.
I couldn't stand his class, extremely easy. He uses past exams and change numbers. His webwork is a waste of time. Ridiculous attendance rule some students miss class and have their mates sign up their names. His grading/grader sucks not fair at all. I recommend taking him but expect to learn slowly and pay attention to details, easy A
He is a slow teacher and makes up his own problems that no one knows how to do because the way he words them He makes up his own words that are hard to understand. If you aren't going to take any math classes after MAT170 I would recommend him otherwise I wouldnt he doesnt prepare you well enough for further classes
A terrible teacher in my opinion. He's incredibly diffuclt to understand and makes up his own problems. It looks like hes teaching himself along the way too. His homework is a complete waste of time and he's gross looking too. Choose a different teacher if you want to understand the material.
A really bad teacher. He doesnt go over the material well. and hes hard to understand. If you want to understand what youre doing. go to a different teacher. he tries be funny when hes not and hes gross looking.
Super easy class. Don't buy the book. Going to lecture is a complete waste of time as you can just go over his slides later, too bad the he's so strict on attendance. But you can just sign yourself in and then leave 10 min into the lecture.
He does everything on the board and if you miss one day you will need to ask a friend for note. he does any problem but explaining it hes not so good at. you will need a friend to help you explain
You'll probably hear at least 11 Grant's Tomb jokes, but it gets funnier each time. Make sure you do the practice problems or you will fall behind in the class when it comes to web work (ridiculously hard!) and tests. he only assigns like 3 problems each week for HW which is nice but you pretty much fail each 1 if you get over 1.5 points marked off
He can show you how to do the problems but trying to understand what he's explaining is hard. Also, in my opinion, his grading system is the worst; if you miss minor details it'll hurt your grade.
good teacher. gives very helpful pre-tests. knows how to explain what to do.
The class is still full nearing the end of the semester, i don't think anyone's withdrawn. This has been a low stress class. He's really clear, nice, helpful , funny...I can't handle teachers that fly thru stuff, he doesn't at all...i know a lot of people say a lot of profs are great, but honestly I need it dumbed down, he did a great job!
I love how he explains things and gives examples for everything he teaches but you cant miss a class or you will really fall behind hes nice and understanding and is a great teacher.
Very knowledgeable and helpful. He gives little homework and offers points for your work rather than marking the entire problem wrong. Works with Webwork (which is difficult). Overall good teacher - I would recommend him.
Goes over examples step by step.Text not needed; his lecture slides are posted online & were better at explaining concepts.Exams are straight forward, and if you study the previous exams (also posted online), you should have no problem.Holds a WebWork problem session before WebWork assignment is due.I would take him again for other math courses.
Best calculus teacher I've ever had. Give this man a job!
great person and professor. He care about students and very helpful. Easy to talk to and grade everything include your work which is good for the overall wxam grade. you need to do HW and webwork though.
Horrible, horrible, horrible! They guy cracks up sarcastic jokes about coming in the morning and doesnt care at all about his appearance and believes everyone is out to bribe him. He also screwed with an exam and didn't offer any reconciliations for those that took that version (I took it). Very slow teacher and overly repetitive! Worst prof ever!
This is my third time taking this class and he is by far the best! Easy to understand (actually speaks english) and very helpful answers all questions and is fair in grading. If your a construction student like me i recomend him. He doesnt get overly technical like other engineering math professors! ten points!
Only teaches half the concepts he tests on, rambles on in class and so only gets 2-3 problems done per class period. Not helpful at all and basically makes you teach yourself. Obviously knows how to do the math, but cannot (or will not) teach it to his students.
worst math prof i have ever had. don't take his class. he expects all the students in his class to have previous knowledge when 70% of the class has none. only good thing is that he can speak english..when hes not rambling on about nothing involving calc..he took 40 minutes to explain webwork (online homework).
This class was a breeze with Heckman. He is very knowledgeable about this material. Even though it can be really dry, there are always examples of things you will need to know for the tests. Tests are pretty easy as long as you just glance at the previous tests an hour or two before taking them. I would recommend taking this class with him.
This class was easy! He posts old tests and gives a lot of time to do the Webwork. Sometimes his lectures were boring, but he always gave great examples. If I was unsure on how to do a problem, I would be able to ask him or look through my notes. Take his class!!!!!
Easiest class ever. If you can master every HW problem assigned (including webwork) and the examples on the slides, it is very possible to get a 100% on every single test. Too bad he doesn't do A+ because this would have been one of the easier ones to earn. And he still curves slightly even though 80% of class had an A.
Dr Heckman is by far the best math teacher I have ever had. He gives great examples in class and teaches through all of them. His tests are easy if you master the basic concepts. The only hard part is WebWork but he offers lots of guidance and explains the problems in class. Take him!
Horrible professor, expects you to know what your doing without any prior knowledge of precalculus. I remember him constantly saying his class was an "Advanced PreCalc Class,"and when i went to my advisor to finally withdraw, i told her i had no idea it was advanced, she looked surprised and said, ASU doesnt have advanced precalc. WTF horrible.
Great instructor. Explains material clearly and knows what he's talking about. Tests are basic and easy like the homework.
He is a nice guy and obviously intelligent, but this makes things complicated for lower level math classes. The pace of the class was very quick. We learned a few sections a day, which made learning each concept difficult and resulted in confusion on tests. The problems on tests were much harder than the homework. Plus side-barely any homeowork
Nice man, very straightforward. A little confusing sometimes, but always happy to answer questions. Minimal homework. Sometimes test questions are harder than homework, but not often. Definitely recommend him. Nice intro to Calc.
This course is EXTREMELY easy for any engineering student taking it - the practice exams are almost exactly like the real exams. Heckman is actually a pretty funny guy in a very weird kind of way. It seems like he's a pretty smart dude so I would definitely like the opportunity to take a course from him that is a little more stimulating.
He's a pretty good professor. The only real issue I have is that his tests are typically only 5 questions, give or take 1. That may sound great but if you don't know one thing that's asked, your grade is screwed.
Terrible professor. He doesn't quite cover anything clearly, you'll find yourself teaching yourself from the book or Internet a lot. His tests are ridiculous. RIDICULOUS. I can help my friends get A's in their 265 class but barely pass my own.
Suffice it to say that this guy is the only reason I made it thru calc II and III ...I had had other professors that were just so fast and unhelpful that I had to withdraw from their class. The material is still difficult but it is Calculus after all. But this guy gives you a legit chance to get an A every time ...dont forget calc I and II for III
DR. HECKMAN is an OUTSTANDING professor!! He is organized and gives you clear cut examples during class that help you understand the concept. He is more than willing to help you if you go to his office hours! Also, his tests and grading scheme are very fair! He is also very funny! Overall, a phenomenal professor. I would take him again!
A great and funny professor! He gives you fair tests and teaches in an organized fashion that helps you understand the material. Go to his office hours if you are lost because he WILL HELP YOU without a doubt! Unlike, most professors he is not intimidating which is a plus. Dr. Heckman was a great professor to have for Calculus III.
Funny professor who keeps class lively with lots of jokes and and a good attitude. Grades extremely fair and tests are easy, but they get harder as the semester progresses. This class really was an easy A. Highly recommend!
Easiest class ever. Only ever went to class to sign in and leave. Online notes are extremely clear (don't need the book). Tests and HW exactly like examples in notes. Very easy A.
Not the easiest A but Heckman does a great job presenting the material. If you work hard, you will earn the grade you want. Gives a fair amount of homework. Although, the tests do get harder as you progress towards the end of the semester. Heckman is fantastic!
Dr. Heckman is wonderful! He is very clear and will give you an A if you put in some effort. Listen in class, do the homework, and you'll do great! He's also quite funny.
Christopher Heckman is a beautiful human being. Some days when he came to class with a haircut, one feels almost obligated to point it out and complement him. The colorful shirts that he sometimes wear are nearly as colorful as his character. His bright yellow shirt reminds me of some kind of Charlie Brown character that you just can't help but hug
This was the easiest class I've ever taken ever, forever. Also the teacher was totally bangin' hot'n'spicy for real. Don't even buy the text book, you don't need it, he will rock linear algebra into your cranie cranium old school style like a G, for real. Take this class with this man for sure. Almost reminds me of Chris Farley too, it's grrrrreat!
I once asked Christopher Heckman to help me conceptualize multidimensional subspaces. He did so with ease; with EASE.
He's extremely intelligent, but good luck passing his class. Homework assignments are only a few questions, and the tests are the same. TESTS ARE EXTREMELY DIFFICULT. Your grade is screwed if you don't understand one topic. If you like teaching yourself, this is your class. If you need any sort of explanation, NOT RECOMMENDED.
Heckman is a great professor. He is very easy to understand, very friendly, and clear. Calculus is tough and I don't like math at all, but if you have to take it then choose Heckman. Mostly WebWork for homework, with written homework from the book due every other class (only three problems though). Its tough material, but Heckman is the best choice
One of the best "lecturers" ASU has, they need to upgrade him to proffesor. Keeps material interesting via nerdy math history and corny jokes. Slides present material in clean, easy to understand format, no need for book. Bonus sports gambling application for those interested.
One of the greatest math lecturer you can have. He is very easy to deal with and friendly. Very approachable should you have any question. Class does get a little dull, but then its math. His corny jokes does keep you awake from time to time. You will not regret taking him.
If you have him, do not buy the textbook, you don't need it. Webwork and a weekly 1-3 problems covers homework. His reviews are of past tests, but pay attention to what he chapters will be on the test because your class may be at a different pace. The tests themselves are pretty simple and the class is essentially delving into matrices.
Pretty good teacher
Great teacher. He explains clearly what he expects you to know for homework and tests. No textbook usage.
He comes off as an average teacher, but he is above the rest at the end of the semester. I know a lot of people who had trouble in their Calc II classes. His test's aren't impossible they aren't a cake walk but with at least 4 hours of studying two days before not a problem. Work load is low overall and he reviews the class before test! Great Guy!
I have taken MAT267, MAT275, and MAT242 at ASU this far. MAT242 has not only been the easiest in terms of subject matter, but Professor Heckman has been the most clear, and helpful in regards to aptitude. Not only would I highly recommend any course taught by Heckman against the average math teacher, but I would only recommend Heckman for MAT242.
He is a really good teacher. He is very approachable and will answer all questions you have. His class is east. I HIGHLY recommend him. I am taking him for MAT 275 next semester.
best teacher at asu ive had. he cares that his students do well will fight for a spot to take this guy again
He is a good instructor. No quizzes, only homework and test.Take him.
Nice guy! This class was incredibly easy. I was only every confused a couple times. When I went in for office hours, he was so helpful and straightforward and in a few minutes I felt like I knew everything. The old tests he posts are EXACTLY like the ones you'll take
This guy is entertaining and cares about whether you understand the material or not. I took this class to get out of MAT 343 which was supposed to be harder and I'm glad I did. It did help that I was taking MAT 275 at the same time, but overall I found the class insanely easy. Definitely an easy A
One of the best math teachers at ASU. Always willing to help. Very easy to understand.
Very good teacher. Its simple stuff if you do the HW. Willing to help if you ask. Lessons, test reviews (& partial answers) on his homepage.
Make genuine effort to be flawless with the homework and webwork, make yourself a formula/study sheet to memorize before tests, and you've got an easy A. Funny, great guy. You can skip the E&P textbook, just get his cheap one.
By far one of the best Math teachers at ASU. He is very good at what he does, and genuinely cares about his students. I will admit, his lectures are boring, and can be dull, but the reason why it's boring is because after one example, you know the concept, but he still does 2 more for each concept. HE GIVES A LOT PARTIAL CREDIT. TAKE HIM IF YOU CAN
This guy is the best MATH professor at ASU. Very easy class, and always willing to help. The old tests he posts are the test he gives, and webwork is due before each test. TAKE HIM OR DON'T TAKE 242 at all.
An amazing professor. Buy his book instead of the edwards and penny book. Homework is straight forward. Do not forget to do webwork! The tests are identical to the old ones. Super nice. I totally recommend this professor. I wish I wouldve taken him for all of my calculus classes
Dr. Heckman is awesome! Class can be kind of boring because examples are repetitive, but I always brought other work and tuned in when I needed to. Tests were straightforward and Dr. Heckman is always willing to help students understand something. He'll even help you with concepts from other more difficult math classes! Wish I had him for Calc 3.
This class is super easy, especially with the way he teaches it. The homework and tests aren't that hard but I recommend looking over the notes so that you don't forget anything. Heckman organizes the class really well, everything flowed nicely.
The class is easy. The exams are from written homework that he gives.
This class is the way to do 242. Attendance is mandatory, written homework due almost every week, and webwork is due before tests. All of his notes are online and his textbook is very useful, but you can survive without it. I haven't paid attention in class since first exam. Exams are VERY similar to previous tests. Take Heckman and you're set.
Took him in the first section of MAT 242 online, I believe. Despite it being online, the class was set up so there is a lot of interaction with him if you want it, but you can also just power through the webwork and take the exams and be done. He is very responsive! Tests were hard because they were online, but not impossible to do well on.
Good professor. The class itself is kind of difficult to understand, but Prof. Heckman does a good job simplifying the material. Don't bother getting the book. We didn't use it at all and it's too confusing to understand.
Well the comments below mine pretty much says it...Great professor, quite easy syllabus, make sure you submit your hw's and go to the tutoring center if you need clarification on some topic as it can get confusing. Midterms are exactly the same problems as the hw's. He cares a lot and is funny! Easy A and you learn a lot!
He is a great teacher who explains the concepts in a crystal clear manner. Unfortunately, this class, MAT 242, is very easy, and the course becomes incredibly boring. He also takes attendance, so you have to go to class even if you are understanding everything.
One of the best math professors at ASU
I had to drop MAT243 because I failed the first test hard. I am a B student, and class wasn't too bad until the test.. his Test was insane, way harder than his homework or even last years test used to study from.. Pretty hard class, I would avoid if possible.
Heckman is a pretty good and clear teacher, but it sometimes feels as if he doesn't actually fully explain the material to you, but just rights problems and does them while you watch. The online homework is extremely frustrating and tedious but not impossible to complete. Exams are fairly tough but straight forward. DONT BUY THE TEXTBOOK
Nice guy, but really just not great at explaining this complicated subject.
Heckman teaches through examples so if that is not the right type of teaching for you, I wouldn't take him. All his pop quizzes are group work so they are pretty impossible to fail. He also, grades extremely nicely. He gives everyone at least 2 points for every quiz and exam. You have to really try not to do well in this class.
Avoid him at all costs. Tough grader and the tests are NOTHING like the reviews.
Easy class makes it hard! AVOID HIM!! Such a big difference between him and alesandro! He dosent explain something he just talk and talk .. his exams are super hard !!
Avoid him,, easy subject makes it hard and complicated!!
I took calculus in high school and never understood anything until Heckman's class. He teaches through examples and his practice tests are very similar to the tests. There is online homework, and partneropen-note quizzes. Tests are similar to practice tests. Does take attendance. Won't need to buy textbook. Heckman even tells you NOT to buy it.
Heckman is a great math professor. His lectures are pretty clear and he does good example problems that prepare you for tests. The homework directly reflects the lectures, and there isn't very much hw (I spent maybe 1 hourweek). Tests are tough, but you know what to expect. Discrete Math isn't easy, but taking Heckman helps a lot.
Heckman is a nerdy and goofy guy, and I think that adds to his delightful demeanor. That being said, this class is stupid. Not in a "omg so hard" type way, it is literally put together terribly. Hardly any of the material builds into the next chapter. Overall, I don't think any professor could make up for this class, but Heckman at least tried to.
He is definitely a good professor and knows his stuff. However, I was .01 off from the next letter grade up and he refused to bump it up, which I found really harsh despite all the work I had put into the class and gotten As on 23 tests. Discrete is a hard class, but I would say he makes it rather clear.
Professor Heckman is a great professor! Be sure to take notes in class (EVEN IF YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOU'RE DOING) you can go back and learn it again if necessary, notes taken in class are VERY helpful for homework and exams. When it comes to exams, go on Heckman's website to see previous exams for extra practice and to gauge level of difficulty.
Heckman is awesome! Super nice, funny, chill guy. He doesn't overload you with tons of homework. Tests are challenging, but if you do the homework and make sure to understand everything on the checklist you will do fine. I really liked this professor a lot. I'm sure he is among the best of ASU professors out there. Highly recommended!!!
Discrete Mathematics is a tough class, despite whomever is teaching it. That being said, Professor Heckman has made it as manageable as possible to pass the class. There's only three exams, most of the homework is online, and he gives out the answers to written homework that can be helpful for the exams. Overall, I would recommend him.
Discrete Math is not an easy subject but Heckman makes it bearable. Tests don't have many curveball questions. Attendance is mandatory (sign in sheet) but he gives you five free miss days before failing due to absence. No quizzes, only written homework every week and Webwork due before each test. Lectures are boring but helpful.
Heckman is a great teacher, and is very helpful and detailed in his explanations. There were two exams and a final. The first exam was pretty hard, as it had a lot of proofs which are really tedious, but after that exam the rest of the course content was easy to understand.
Dr. Heckman was very helpful while taking this class. I had asked him questions about the course material, which he answered very quickly and with high manners. I even asked his opinion on different courses on campus and other classes I needed for my major and he was knowledgeable on that material. I really appreciated his class and his help.
Nice guy who always takes time to help students or explain content. The class itself is extremely easy and can be learned by simply buying his textbook instead of the official one listed for the class (his is only $10 and words questions just like the test). Lectures are boring but mandatory. Also, tests are verbatim to practices tests.
Heckman is very clear about what he expects on the tests. The practice tests are almost exactly the same as the actual test so A's on tests are easy. You probably don't need a text book cause his lecture slides are so in-depth. If you are going to get a book, buy the one he wrote cause its cheaper and has everything you need.
Heckman is one of the best professors I have had at ASU. His lecture notes are very clear and he explains every tiny detail. This can be boring at times but it helps. Written homework due every week and Webwork is due before each test. His review tests posted online are just like the actual test so he is not trying to trick you. Great teacher
Awesome professor. I learned mostly from the blue book he wrote (not the one on the list) and the homework. Just study past exams they are the same as the actual tests. An A can be obtained with some effort. Do the homework. Some of the homework questions come from past tests and the blue book.
Don't see how people of math and science can get anything lower than an A with Heckman. Homework was simple and could be supplemented with the notes. Exams were exactly like past ones and are made available to study. Heckman was always very clear with his lectures and was always willing to help if you needed it. Definitely recommended!
If you are taking linear algebra, this is your guy. Straight forward exams and homework that lends itself to learning, not just busy work. He ensures that when you leave you have a grasp of the subject, which for engineering major at least, is important in later classes. If you dont get an A, you didnt try. Doesn't use plus or minus system.
HE IS THE BESTTTTTTT!
He is not as prepared for Differential Equations as he is for his other classes
BEST prof ever. 2 tests and a final (not cumulative). no need to attend, although I did. not a lot of homework. for tests, all you gotta do is study all versions of the old tests , literally all I did and got an A+. he is amazing. easy A!!!!
Best professor I've had at ASU. He's amazing at lecturing and makes sure you understand everything. Such a nice & likable guy. His weekly homework takes 30 minutes max but helps you with exams. No bad surprises on exams. Exams are fine as long as you understand the material. The webwork isn't bad at all. Makes discrete an easy class. TAKE HIM!
There were only two exams in this online course so your scores had to be good because your grade depended on points earned. Make sure to do all of the webwork if not as much as you possibly can. The exams were based off of webwork as well so you need to be familiar with how to enter answers correctly. Use the class discussion boards as well.
Instructor Heckman had two midterms and a final (not comprehensive) and were extremely based on his previous tests. Make sure to do all the Webwork (I did less than half of it) because the due dates can sneak up on you. He does allow you to turn in two written works late, which did help.
He's probably the best teacher that you could ask for. Teaches the material well and the test are fair. If you go to class and take descriptive notes, you will succeed in this class
I failed this class twice, but now I'm taking it with Heckman and currently have a high B. He does a good job testing the material and grades fairly leniently. There's just enough homework to prepare you for the tests. Calc 2 can be a nightmare, but he teaches it so well that it actually becomes bearable. Probably the best professor for the class.
Heckman is a great teacher, gives all the resources you need to pass and he even wrote his own textbook which i thought was very well written for a textbook. His reviews prepared well for tests, ie practice tests... go to class hes a great teacher i heard he teaches calc 2 and i wish i would of had him for that class. hes also a funny guy tbh
Heckman is a really nice guy. His lectures may seem long, but are very helpful for exams and hw. There's written hw and webwork every week. Study the past exams for his exams and you will do fine. There are only 2 exams and 1 final (not cumulative). Attendance is required everyday (sign-in sheet). He gave a very generous curve on final grades.
Easy tests but hard homework.
Heckman is the best. Very clear about what he'll test you over, gives a lot of partial credit on exams, super approachable if you're ever having problems. VERY highly recommended. Seriously, if you're able to take a class with him, do it.
Heckman is honestly the best math professor I've had at ASU. If you don't fully understand the concept one way, he's very good at explaining it in other ways. He actually wants you to succeed in his class. His A+ is basically unobtainable (100% in the course) but his letter grades are based on how everyone does in the class.
His lectures may be a bit long but he simplifies the material very well and makes it easy to understand. He does not give quizzes in class so you have to focus on doing well on his exams. He is very clear about what topics to cover. Another thing to note is that he is very generous with partial credit & checks for the process rather than the answer
His lectures are almost entirely example-based, so you can (usually) figure out how to do problems by looking at your in-class notes, but he often goes way too fast during lecture and doesn't always explain exceedingly difficult concepts, and doesn't seem to be very intuitive at answering students' questions.
Heckman is by far one of the most intelligent and down to earth professors i have had. I would absolutely take this prpofessor. If you have the choice choose Heckman. Have asked him questions outside and inside the classroom and is super easy to talk to. Makes jokes all the time but you got to be really witty to actually catch them. TAKE THIS DUDE
Extremely helpful and concise. His examples can sometimes get a little bogged down but overall he's the best math teacher I've had at ASU. His office hours are helpful and he just cares about his students. I would highly recommend him
Every single class is optional. He posts videos on his website which are more useful than his lectures, which are really boring. Barely does any examples and pretty much talks about the history of math. Got an A+ from just watching the videos and showing up for tests.
You don't need to show up, just study the practice test and you'll get an A. There're two extra credit opportunities if you picked up you're test in class, 5 points each. lectures videos were provided on Moodle.
Structurally, the class was easy--homeworks all due at the end of the session and two tests, both fair. However, I found the content to be incredibly difficult because it is taught in such an abstract and unintuitive way. The primary lecture videos were not done by Prof Heckman, though. The videos he did were clear and helpful.
Good teacher. I was able to understand everything by listening to lectures and reading his ppts, so never had to go to office hours. DO WELL ON HOMEWORKS. They count for a lot more of your grade than you think. No cheat sheet allowed for exams, but they're very easy. It's vey hard to find tutors for this class so get help early
The second half of MAT242 is very conceptual and difficult to grasp. Heckman's reviews show you the exact methods you need to know for the test (problems are the same, just different numbers). I wasn't able to get into Heckman's class and went to the first week of classes, he got me (and every single other student waiting) into the class anyway.
Heckman sets his students up for success. He posts lecture notes, videos of concepts, practice tests from the semester before, and gives extra credit for picking up your test after it is graded. The tests are super similar to the reviews but an understanding of the concepts is still needed in order to do well. He is very helpful and enjoys his job.
There is a reason Heckman has such rave reviews. Best math teacher I have ever had- he has a true gift for making tough material seem easy. If you ever have a chance to take him I would recommend you jump at it! He wrote his own textbook for the class but it was not necessary. His lectures are all online but I would highly recommend you go to class
Fantastic teacher. Supplies all lectures and lecture slides online. Attendance is optional if you aren't a freshman and are passing the exams. Homework is straightforward, and exams are exactly like the practice exams. He responds to emails very quickly and is very approachable in and out of the classroom. Highly recommend.
He's an above average professor. Some of the concepts were unclear when he explained them because he would go on and on about things we didn't need to know about the topic. In my class his first two exams were similar to the practice provided on moodle. The final was very different in terms of wording and how they are solved.
In a way, he's a good professor when it comes to explaining concepts but sometimes he explains too much and goes on tangents. The first 2 exams were easy, since they were practically identical to the study guide but for the final, half of the questions were given in such a different way than the practice, so it was difficult.
Fantastic Professor. Had him for MAT243, the lessons were pretty good for covering what would be seen later on in exams and homework. Homework was more difficult than class work, tests fell somewhere in the middle, more like the HW than otherwise. He was very open to questions and concerns and taught a great class.
Discrete Math is a hard course, but Dr. Heckman is the best prof that teaches it. Clear, fantastic at teaching, and offers help when you need it. Lectures can be hard to get through (as with all math courses), but he posts slides online. Tests resemble practice materials, but you still MUST understand things on your own. An A is doable.
Dr. Heckman knows the material he is covering very well, but I found lectures to be somewhat difficult to understand. Typically I would learn all the material by studying for the tests using the practice tests on moodle. He is very approachable if you ever need help and gives little homework. The tests can be challenging, but that's expected.
There are lectures online that you watch to do the homework. They are helpful and you can put it at double speed if you want. The tests are pretty easy. You do have to use the monitoring software since you're taking the tests from home, but you get two attempts, which always helps.
Fantastic man and professor. Class is optional as long as you score above a 70 on the exams. There are plenty of resources he provides online that allow you to succeed. The class itself is pretty straightforward, just stay on top of it and check into class occasionally. Webwork and written homework given.
Great teacher. You can tell he really understands the material.
The dude loves math and puts a lot of effort into teaching it. He taught MAT243 as a direct pre-req to CSE310, often highlighting how the topics were relevant to future coursework as he lectured. His lectures are dense and packed with examples. I often leftfeeling like I was struggling to stay afloat. Go to class and do the work to get the A.
His lectures usually go over examples more difficult than the exams and the homework. The WebWork is all due the day of the exam that covers the section. There is one written homework assignment almost every week, but they usually take like 10 minutes tops. Go to class and you'll do fine. Dont bother with the textbook, youll never use it.
One of the better math professors at ASU, his class is really organized. His lectures were really good and you could tell he really enjoys teaching the course. The practice exams reflected the actual exams so do those. If you did well on exams, attendance was not mandatory for you. Everything you need to be successful in the class was on moodle.
Does a fantastic job of presenting the content clearly and fairly in lecture. Approachable for questions or concerns as well.
4 Tests, each 20% of your grade "WebWork," quizzes, written homework, and a proof paper each worth 5%. Focus on the tests to be successful. The homeworks were very hard and for naught. The WebWork is helpful, and the quizzes were somewhat helpful. The pacing of the course is bad and I found myself having no time to study for the tests.
Heckman is a solid choice for 242. Attending class can be helpful although its not required since alternative lectures are available online. 6 homeworks over the semester, not a lot is due though. Just focus and put in the work required and it'll all be good.
Throughout this class I learned that Heckmans lectures were clear enough that I could teach myself the material. Easy class, 4 exams, but the homework was significantly more difficult than the exams. Only bad thing was hw and exams were weighted the same so doing bad on hw would hurt your grade significantly. Heckman is a great guy and interesting
This is a resubmission, I took this class in Fall 2018. This man should be no where near an online course, at least for Discrete Math. He openly admitted to not knowing what was in the course, despite knowing he was teaching it months beforehand. He may be great for in residence, but avoid if you're taking a course online.
If you spend even the night before studying for the exam, you'll be guaranteed to do well. Heckman himself is a adequate professor as far as teaching goes, but is fantastic at providing an easily passed course.
Professor Heckman is a respected and great professor. His course is easy to pass as he does not try to trick you in any way on the exams. His practice exams are exactly like his real exams with the numbers changed. His lectures are helpful but not required to pass the course. Put effort into the class and more than likely you will pass.
Attendance isn't mandatory unless you're a freshman or you do poorly on an exam. Showed up to class 4 times and took 3 exams and did pretty well. Study the practice exam he offers the night before and the exam is practically identical. Also, pick up your exams some time to get +5 points !
Good lectures. You can tell that he's a very knowledgeable person, and most of the time he conveys that knowledge well. It can be very confusing for the first month, but eventually it comes together. Tests are very similar to the previous years' and homework problems. Both WebWork and written homework. Makes a point to touch on CS concepts.
242 with Heckman should be your GPA booster because of the practice exams. His lectures can get super boring and monotone, but there are lecture videos which I recommend better than going to lecture. Attendance is non-mandatory unless you're a freshman. Make sure to show up the first week or you'll be dropped from the class. Again, PRACTICE EXAMS
Heckman is a good professor but has very wordy and lengthy presentations. The examples in the lectures are the most helpful part of the class. Practice exams are almost identical to exams. All lectures and needed material are posted online, and attendance isn't taken.
Hands down the worst calculus professor at ASU. The whole math department works together to make reasonably difficult tests, and Heckman makes his own harder tests. There's a lot of homework online that barely counts towards the grade. His lectures are just him doing out problems in front of the class, with no explanation. I don't recommend him.
First time teaching this course, so a little hard to understand. Lectures put me to sleep. Webwork was inherited from another teacher, so I didn't understand some questions because he didn't teach those things.
I didn't like this class and the lecture slides are crowded. Often he backtracks and said that he's using the wrong PowerPoint. When I asked for help multiple times, he told me to practice more despite me not knowing how to start the problems. Taken during COVID19 switched to online after spring break.
Prof Heckman is extremely knowledgable about the course and gives great lectures. The material itself is pretty stale but he tries his hardest to make it interesting. There are few HW assignments so it is important to do all of them.
A real gem, he was very easy on the homework given how difficult college is already, he wasn't a burden, provides his own notes on Linear Algebra, the math isn't too bad because he's so good at teaching, tests are just like the practice, as long as you work hard, study and do the work, you'll do well. I highly recommend him for Linear Algebra.
He makes Linear Algebra so easy. He is Hands down one of the best professors at ASU.
Study the practice tests they are almost exactly the same as the exams. Lectures are boring but always posted online if you miss them. Buy his textbook/notes not the real textbook its more straightforward and cheaper. Caring professor who wants you to succeed. Attendance is optional if you pass the first exam. 5% extra credit built into each exam.
Really nice guy, cares about his students. Straightforward homework and exams, extra 5% added for free to each. Really easy class, doesn't try to trick you at all. Only lame thing is that an A+ is 100%+ and he doesn't round (I missed the A+ by 2 class points). If you don't want to show up he has video lectures for each lesson, which is also great.
The professor has decent lectures. He uploads the videos to Canvas. His grading criteria for exams are weird and his assignments for webwork are a drag. He is not very caring for students and sometimes doesnt even answer questions for reviews. Would not recommend.
He is very kind and tries his best to explain the answer, one thing I don't like about his classes is that he drags the questions. for exam review we can barely do 3 questions in 50 minutes
The guy makes basically the entire course grade based off of a handful of tests. Then the tests are like 3-5 questions max. On top of that, he has a tendency to include typos in his own tests that cause unnecessary confusion. And then to top it off, he's a harsh grader. Offers no extra credit. Does not answer emails. Make this guy a last resort.
He definitely is an interesting professor in my opinion. Really cool guy and pretty good at explaining concepts but does not know how to lecture for the life of him. Lectures are super hard to understand on zoom during the pandemic and I have to teach myself everything. But overall, super easy class! Really cool guy.
Professor Heckman is very intelligent and can be funny, but sometimes his lectures can drag a bit. The practice exams and homework are well-reflected in the exams. He is also easy to reach by email and very helpful during office hours.
Heckman is your go-to for linear algebra. Exams are identical to the reviews, and the hw is short, simple and similar to the slides he goes through. It is very hard to fail to this class as long as you put in effort to master the algebraic techniques. First test is no calculator but after that a TI-84 is your best friend. TAKE HIM FOR 242
He made Linear Algebra tied with my favorite subject in math, super clear on what he expects, very clear instruction and the tests are exactly like the practice minus some stuff here and there, after all, he is the course coordinator of it at ASU.
A kind professor. He uploads his lectures online and is very helpful during class when you ask questions. The practice exams were almost exact copies of the test, very helpful and useful for knowing exactly what you need to study. A few weekly written homeworks, but mostly online Webwork that was due the night before the test.
Professor Heckman is a great instructor. Sometimes his lectures are hard to follow since he dives into the theory, but the rest of the class is easy to pickup. The practice exams are practically word for word of the real exams and his textbook has examples of all the homework problems. He gives of resources so you can understand the material.
Super considerate and curves your grade at the end of the semester. Practice exams are helpful and sometimes the exact same as the actual exams. His lectures are a bit dry so I would recommend re-watching them at a faster speed. Make sure you understand the homework assignments, since the concepts from it will be on the exam. Final isn't cumulative
Heckman teaches the entire course using very boring looking slideshows, and for the most part just reading and elaborating what the slides say. However, they tell you exactly what you need to know, and if you take good notes, you're set. It may seem hard to get a question in, but he welcomes them, and is very exact and helpful with his answers.
Took calc I with him too. He's definitely a gem in his field and knows amazing mumbo-jumbo to help you visualize diagrams if needed. Insanely quick response time, considering he had 5 other classes this sem. Great practice tests, not a ton of HW. Used moodle instead of canvas, which is a ain, since you couldn't play to see what exact grade you need
I think hes a good professor but I messed up one test all year and there was no possible way for me to pass the class which is extremely annoying and inconvenient
Prof Heckman outlines what you need to be successful. His lectures can be slow, but they reiterate what you need to know. I watched ASU math vids, went to class, practiced the HW 2-3 times before each test and have barely missed any points. The webwork is quick and easy once you understand the concepts. Put in some effort and its an easy A.
Maybe it was just me, but the lectures were super stale and just reading off the lecture slides which were already confusing as it was. Gave a super general idea of what would be on tests, but ended up being way harder than what was covered in class. He should improve on giving students example problems that would match the difficulty on the tests.
His lectures can be dense, but as long as you read his notes after and do some practice problems, you should be fine. He uploaded all his lectures to zoom as well.
Professor Heckman is kind and funny at times, but his lectures can be pretty boring. He also uploads his lectures to zoom, so you don't have to attend anything but the exams in person. He doesn't give much homework although I usually had to teach myself how to do the problems, and the tests progressively got harder over the semester.
Mr. Heckman had the most boring lectures imaginable. His class is run through moodle instead of Canvas making it nearly impossible to see due dates or grades. He gives really good study guides for exams though. We used the textbook twice so if you can find an online version make sure to buy it.
Overall I had professor heckman for calc 1,2 and 3. Hes a solid professor but if you dont do well on his tests you are screwed. He is funny and nice at times and his tests are mainly like the written hw. The tests got progressively harder as the year goes on and if you are close to the higher letter grade he will round you. Tough course
I took calculus in High School so I found this class to be quite easy. Even if you haven't been exposed to calculus before, Dr. Hendrickson does a good job teaching it. His practice exams on moodle are very similar to the real exam, so I would recommend that you review the practice exams before you take the exam to better prepare yourself.
Webwork and Written Hw(20%), Tests(80%), No Extra Credit. He does not believe in M.C, FRQ only tests, and he talks like a textbook. That being said all ASU Calc 3 profs suck, and their classes are like this. His tests were the written hw, but get harder during the semester. Heavy curve, went from 87% to an A. Heckman is a homie, take this class!
Really polite guy, very approachable. Tests are 4-5 FRQ questions that he gives ACCURATE study guides for. Do the study guides and you guarantee yourself at least a B on every test. Lectures are a bit boring but that's expected in most math classes. Grades pretty quick as well. Study guides also include explanations always.
Professor Heckman is extremely kind and knowledgeable. His lectures can be dense, but he posts all of the materials online for review afterwards. He also requires attendance only if you didn't get at least a C on the last exam, which I liked. I also didn't really mind the webwork homework, and his personal notes (instead of book) are very helpful!
The only reason he doesn't have a 5 is because he can be a bit dry and semi-slow in lectures. That being said, his lectures are very detailed and he is super knowledgeable about all forms of math. His practice tests are near identical to his real tests (no surprises), minimal homework, and altogether a nice guy. Simple, easy, low-stress A.
Prof Heckman makes MAT 242 very doable. He sets you up for success by giving clear sample tests to use as study materials before test days. Homework is on WebWork, not to much, and some written homework assignments. He curved the final grade. Would take him again
He is a good prof but his lectures could use some work, there's no point in taking notes until he does an example. His tests mirror his practice tests almost perfectly. You can easily get an A if you study the practice tests and do the written homework. Tests are 75% of your grade but there's only 2 & not a cumulative final. Solid choice for 242!
Heckman is a good professor overall, he taught well and answered questions clearly. However, the way this class is weighted is odd. The 7 written hw's that were 2-3 questions ended up being 13% of our grade. The Webwork however, was about 100 questions and was less than that. The final was also soo difficult and had questions that were 100% tricks.
I've taken Calc 1 twice and withdrew bc I wasn't getting it. I got a B w Heckman. The best thing is his practice exams! He gives out multiple forms with written solutions that are similar to the tests. There's a lot of Webwork. He's really approachable for help and knows the ins and outs. I'm taking another class w him bc I really liked him.
As the rest of the views say the lectures are hella boring, theres webwork, a homework every 1-2 weeks which is 1-3 problems, and optional sample tests. Theres 4 exams. 1, 2, Deriv mastery, and the final. The homework and the sample tests are nearly identical to the actual exams which takes most of your grade. (The tests were really weird tho imo)
The Lectures leave you bored out of your mind and learning nothing. Had to rely on private tutoring to learn anything/pass the class. He gives you the exam questions beforehand which is amazing and the assignments are ok if you have someone else to teach you how to do it
Clearly knows his stuff
Prof. Heckman is great! He understands the material at a very deep level. His lectures can be slow and boring but they are always worthwhile. Homework comes from both the textbook and online. His tests are exactly like the test reviews so make sure to study!
this guy has harsh grading policy ... his paper was kinda difficult and he isnt interested listening to the students grievances. please dont take this class.
Materials are a little hard but the course pace is very slow. Homeworks is very useful and easy to understand. Sample test reviews are very important, identical to the actual exam just with different numbers.
Professor Heckman is your best bet for Calc 3. Optional lectures that I mostly skipped. Just give a few days to study his practice exam & you should receive an A. Practice exam is mainly similar to what's on the exam, with maybe 1/2 questions changed or worded differently. About 10 written HWs + webwork. Calc 3 is geometry-heavy. Wonderful Prof.!
I have heard a lot of horror stories from Calc 3 professors, but Professor Heckman is the real deal. His practice exams are almost identical to the actual exams and the final is not cumulative but considered as Test 4. He is quite reasonable with grading and always has office hours. Highly recommend him for any Calc class, especially Calc 3!!
His online homework allows for unlimited attempts, so there should be no reason why you miss any points on them. The majority of the course grade depends on unit exams, which are similar to the practice exams. If you actively listen to his lectures, you might pick up on a joke or two from him.
The online homework is very constructive and gives you unlimited attempts so you don't have to stress about points the entire time. His study guides are very helpful for the exams too.
Wouldn't extra credit at all. Wouldn't consider your requests. Big no.
This professor gives an excessive amount of written homework. Each homework problem needs an hour of work and he sometimes includes unnecessary work. His lectures are boring, but he is fairly nice. The PowerPoint overcomplicate things, which makes them hard to follow.
Grader got his algebra credits from wyoming elementary school. Professor removed the webwork formatting to torment his students mentally and physically.
Worst professor for maths calculus 2 doesn't know how to teach and his grading system is the worst
Calc 2 is a hard class, but Heckman tries his best to help people understand. Most of his teaching is just him doing example problems, so if that doesn't work for you you won't like his class. He does go painfully slow sometimes, but overall an okay teacher.
Engaging lectures that include plenty of examples that show up in form on the exams. Exams are designed to help out the student, and he grades fairly.
The course was well taught; however, we did not cover the applications of content i.e. how we could use topics in our careers. Nevertheless, the exams are similar to practice exams, and the homework sufficiently prepares you to succeed. The class and content are straightforward to follow, so just be ready to show up, learn, and ask questions.
The subject matter can be challenging to understand; however, he does strive to teach it to cater to the test. If you are willing to put in the time, effort, and focus, you will be fine in his course. While attendance is not mandatory, those that do not show up typically receive poor grades. The practice exams are similar to the actual exams.
If you pay attention this class (MAT242) is so easy. The professor goes extra slow in lecture to make sure everyone understands and answers all your questions. What's going to be on the test is also very clear as each test only tests 1 or 2 chapters and the final test isn't even cumulative. If you input any decent amount of effort you will get an A
Has a tendency to just do problems in front of the class without an explanation. Also does not spend a good amount of time on each topic; he skips around and develops his own curriculum to teach students a certain kind of way. He is very intelligent, but if this is your first time taking Calculus, this is NOT the teacher for you
Professor Heckman makes the class easy to pass, with that said it is not a given A. Go to his office hours, especially for written homework, he is always willing to assist students that are struggling with their assignments
Maybe it's just because I've already taken calculus 1 in high-school, but his lectures are just so... boring. I've never had any problems focusing on a teacher before but something about the way he teaches just makes me zone out. I wouldn't take his course if you have trouble paying attention. Otherwise, good teacher.
Professor Heckman is very kind and caring if you have any questions or concerns he is there to listen. He offers 5% extra credit when you pick up a test within a few days of the test being graded. The tests seem to be only 4 questions with no multiple choice for the first 2 tests.
Professor Heckman seems like a good guy and he offers solid help during his office hours but his grading criteria are terrible. His MAT265 tests were the only ones that did not offer multiple-choice questions on any of the tests. There's also not much homework to pull your grade up if you don't do well on the tests.
Great Professor, always willing to help. Take him for any math classes.
I went into Dr. Heckman's MAT265 class straight from a high school-level pre-calculus course, and I think I was well matched. Dr. Heckman was very responsive to emails, and his lectures were very informative. They were also fascinating, coming from someone with minimal experience in calculus. I would highly recommend taking his classes!
Heckman was by far the easiest and nicest professor i've had so far. He gives you the tools you need to succeed, all you have to do is put some effort into what he is teaching and it'll come to you. It can be boring at times but he really spoke well and it just clicks really easily. If you have the option to pick him, do it.
just take him and I promise you he'll be your favorite math professor ever, makes everything simple and somehow makes calculus fun.
the goat: curved me from 87 to an A. heckman has a very helpful attitude, great test prep materials, and attendance is not mandatory. worst part about this class was the webwork, i hate webwork sm.
Although I did not go to his lectures, they are pretty good. He does not have a cumulative final which makes things a bit easier. He also curves the grade at the end of the semester. There are about 8 written homeworks split over 15 weeks and 4 tests. Webwork for each chapter is due the day before the test.
An excessive amount of homework given for an introductory Calc class; more than any other professor. Also, webwork which is 350 questions is only 10% of your grade, but the written homework which turns out to be only 20-25 questions is 13%. Weird if you ask me. Just his lectures were also so dry and I would always fight to stay awake
He is a good prof if you want the grade. You will be severely disappointed if you come into it trying to learn anything. He is very unorganized, monotone in his lectures, and barely cohesive with his lectures. He teaches you how to take his tests, not understand the materials. It's difficult to do the other hw but if you want an A you can get one.
So much webwork with very boring and stale lectures. Heckman isn't bad and will teach you if you are willing to learn but he can be hard to follow at times. He gives a 5% bonus to the first 2 tests if you are there to pick them up after he is done grading them. WW was around 300-400 questions yet only worth 10% of our grade.
Prof. Heckman is great, always available during office hours and makes hard classes passable. Taken him for calc 2 and 3 and by far best prof. at ASU. His tests are clear and all questions are very similar to the sample tests he gives and the written homework. Webwork is annoying but unavoidable for any class. His lectures are engaging and clear.
Best math teacher you will ever have trust, take him for any class.
WARNING! DO NOT TAKE FOR MAT 265! I've taken many upper division and math classes now including MAT 266 and this was by far the most stressful experience I ever had. The amount of HW for an intro calc class is absurd. His derivative mastery is also painfully difficult and different from the rest of the department; 20 short answers in 50 minutes.
Best math professor ever! Tests are all written responses, which allows for partial credit and makes the tests easier than the hw. Provides a class day for review and has office hours before tests. Tests are very similar to practice tests, so all you have to do is make sure you study.
He is SO wordy in his explainations, I cannot make sense of math with simply words.I was out sick for a week with the flu and doctor's note and has to miss a test, he would not reschedule or let me make it up even after asking all semester. This class is already hard as it is, having a professor who isn't very flexible makes it harder
Please don't take him. You will thank me at the end of the semester
I took his class last fall, and unfortunately, it was a disappointing experience. The lectures were disorganized making it very difficult to learn the material for someone taking calculus for the first time. The grading was also very bizarre. I heard he is better for Calc 3 but I would avoid taking him for Calc 1
Professor Heckman has a unique teaching style, but engaging with it pays off. The workload is intense, but the lectures are informative, and he's helpful during office hours. unstuckstudy ai was a game-changer for my study prep.
Overall really good professor. He kinda gets boring at times but he explains concepts really well , usually goes slowly so everyone can pick it up. His tests are all free response and is usually whatever he covers in the class and the written homework so those are easy. Edfinity is edfininity nothing to say about that.If you see him, take him.
All materials were given, and the lectures were just following a powerpoints. Homework's were okay in difficulty, but if you fall behind its hard to catch up quick enough
Lectures can be heavy but if you pay attention you won't get lost. He is very organized + most problems in class/written homework are in exams. One thing I didn't enjoy was the webwork/edfinity. He gives you plenty of time to finish, it's a matter of not falling behind. Exams are written responses, gives partial points even if answer is incorrect.
He's a fantastic calc 1 prof. Unfortunately, he had to go on medical leave and Frank Arthur, another professor, took over. I miss Heckman's teaching. :(
Tests are free response, but he provides similar (not exactly the same) study guides. As someone who struggles with math, this was a good option for me. After he left on medical leave, replacement made the class harder, removed the curve, and gave harder questions. He was still easy to reach despite not being our prof
His lectures are quite literally the same as just sitting at home and reading a textbook by yourself. Everything was just so unengaging and unclear, I basically relearned it on my own time the next semester much more easily. If you are not extremely disciplined and easily focused on your own save yourself the suffering and pick any other professor.
Your grade in this class is mostly free response exams, but Heckman does give partial credit for wrong answers which helps a lot. Lectures can be confusing and wordy. I think the class would have been better if it didn't get messed up when Professor Arthur had to step in when Heckman had to take medical leave.
He is perfect ngl.
weird/rude attitude. Went to OH to ask for help on hw and immediately said "go to EdDiscussion for that". People posted on EdDiscussion and his answers are blunt, indirect. Would not budge at all with partial credit and test-taking exceptions with people or even extensions. Just don't expect help from him. DK if he has personal problem or just him
His lectures are very boring and he talks way too much for what needs to be said. However his tests are really easy
didnt attend class at all other than for tests, still got an A from his practice tests, which are similar to the actual exam. Final exam is not cumulative. hw assignments are due in chunks the day before exams, so it helps u study. gives extra credit on first two exams if u come to class to get it within one day of him grading it.
Professor Heckman is by far the easiest professor I have had so far. His practice exams are the same questions on the actual exam except they have different numbers, and the Edfinity assignments weren't due until the day before the exam. My only gripe with this course is that the TA's would harshly grade the written homework assignments.
Professor Heckman was pretty good. Didn't show up to class because all the slides were posted on Canvas and he literally just reads off them. Practice exams are the exact exam with maybe one different question and sometimes different numbers. 5 points extra credit if you get your exam after it was graded.
Heckman's lectures are slow and are geared towards students who may not have the strongest foundation in math. All lecture slides & videos can be found posted online, and he directly reads from the slides, so there is little need to show up in person. Extra credit is given on tests and grade cutoffs are curved at the end. Solid and easy class.
When I took him, we had maybe 350+ WebWork questions throughout the semester which was just way too much. He's a nice person but this class did feel too difficult for Calculus I especially when showing my exams to other students with different 265 professors. Heard he's great for 242, 267 and tougher classes, but I would find someone else for 265.
Final was hard, but practice test was available to ensure a decent grade. Other than that the class was a breeze.
Nightmare professor. Unhelpful and sarcastic in discussions. Homework was excessive and unnecessarily complex. Tests didn't reflect course material AT ALL - failed 2/3 tests. Relied completely on online platforms (HonorLock/Edfinity) instead of teaching. Made college life miserable to the point I nearly quit. Avoid this professor at all costs.
He is a good professor but I went into the class not having taken calculus before and struggled a ton. If you have taken calculus before it should be a pretty easy A, if not do not take. He is not helpful at office hours, seems to have good intentions but can't deliver. There is an extreme amount of homework that is completely unnecessary.
His lectures are very off the tangent, and honestly, don't take him unless you have prior knowledge of calculus or are super comfortable truly teaching yourself everything. His exams are difficult but manageable, but the WebWork problems were difficult and there was way too many in my opinion. Overall not too bad, just wouldn't be my first pick.
This professor is absolutely stellar. He is very accommodating, and it is very clear that he is passionate about teaching this course and math in general. If this is your first time taking calculus, PLEASE go to lectures and PAY ATTENTION. He is very helpful in office hours and tests are literally structured EXACTLY like the practice tests.
Couldn't ask for better. Because of all the matrixes, it's hard to take notes during lecture but he posts all his slides. Exams are basically the same as the practices with different numbers and maybe a couple different setups. All the methods for test and homework problems can be found clearly explained in his slides. Take him for linear.
10/10 recommend!!! His practice tests are literally the EXACT same as the test and its so easy to get an A in his class. I fumbled and didn't study for a test and still got an 80% but it dropped my grade to a 95%. Linear Algebra is always test heavy but he makes it so easy and really cares about what he teaches.
very easy class, very slow lectures. fortunately, attendance is optional. professor is very nice.
Dude was a confusing lecturer, but a godsend when it came to tests. He uses a computer software to write his tests, so they are very very similar to the practice tests he has on Canvas. Super nice guy who was obviously very knowledgable, but I had this class at 6pm twice a week and probably went a total of 10 times. Easier to teach yourself.
