He's a great teacher really knows the stuff very well and presents in a great manner test comes from the HW which he requires you to hand in
He is great. He makes Finance 3000 fun and easy to learn. Test are exact replicas of the HW and he always goes over HWs and gives back the scores in time for tests. Always relates personal experiences to teaching, that's what makes it interesting.
unquestionable, he is a great professor. Even thoug the grade that I earned from this course is not really good, I still like this professor. Indeed, I really like the way he teach.........

Hw is fair, tests are fair right from hw, You do need to review the work to do good on his tests. Stories are interesting, topic can be boring at times. go Academy of Finance!
Very good teacher. Gives good examples and teaches the course well! I recommend taking his class!
I enjoyed this professor. He was accessible at all times to the students, except for the times he had personal issues to attend to. I thought he was the best professor I ever had during my Baruch experience. Very caring, respectful and thoughtful.
Excellent Professor. Took his class 2 years ago. Very helpful and clear. Must attend all classes and you'll do well.
Good Professor
HE IS THE BEST PROF AT BARUCH. HE IS CLEAR,KNOWS WHAT HE IS TALKING ABOUT, AND IS VERY HELPFUL. I UNDERSTAND FINANCE AFTER LEARNING IT FROM HIM, HE IS THE BEST BEST TEACHER !!!! I WOULD DEFINITELY RECOMMEND HIM TO EVERYONE!! TAKE PROF. HESSEL !!!
Prof. Hessel is one of the greatest finance teachers at Baruch. I had him for the Academy of Finance class in Spring 2003 and he was NEVER boring. Do the homework, pay attention, and he'll be a nice grader! He makes all the boring financial stuff easy!
Great Fin prof. Loud voice and clear, still he video-typed every of his lectures and put them on blackboards for students. Barely used the textbook b/s his notes and HWs are all we needed to study for the exams. Funny gestures in the class, How funny? You'll have to see them by urself.
Professor Hessel is a very spirited in terms of his presentation of the course work and he keeps you interested. He presents the work in a manner that you are able to understand and he also makes room for clarification. I would certainly recommend that you register for his Finance class.
class is very fun gives hw once a week but exams are fair
Prof. Hessel is so awesome! I had him in my senior year of HS and he was great. He's so funny and he's a very knowledgable man. His exams aren't easy but if you study, you'd definitely do well. I accidentally missed a test and he let me make it up, which was really nice of him.
Oversimplified difficult concepts but complicated simplest idea, even common sense
Don't even look any further, this is the guy to take. Very fun and interesting lectures. Gives away 25% of the final grade, the rest is easy and you're allowed to have a cheat sheet on the exams. Just enjoy and watch him rip a $20 bill the first day of class.
took him a few semesters ago. great professor. makes the class interesting, considering the topic, and explains the material well. i've taken many finance professors and only one other one is comparable to him in teaching ability.
He's a good professor, makes the class interesting and tells funny stories to keep you awake. He gives homework but if you do it, the test is almost exactly like the homework so it helps a lot. If you try just a little bit, you'll get an A no problem.
Correction...Hws are not exactly like exams.. In fact, HWs were harder than exams. But ppl exchange answers before submittin hws anyway so everybody gets 100
Awesome! Explains very well, makes it possible to get a good grade. Do all the homeworks well and do not miss classes and you will be fine on exam.
One of the best professors I have ever had. No comparison. simply the best. Do you want to learn Finance and actually leave the class with some knowledge about finace, than take this professor. He is not that hard. Do your work and you'll be fine. Highly racomended. A++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
He is a nice guy but HARD TEST THO!!
Very knowledgeable and hard-working, but terribly disorganized: his notes are full of errors incl. calculation errors, leading to confusion. Exams don't correspond to the practice exercises, results disappoint many incl the Pr. himself! He needs a detail-oriented assistant to go over notes with a fine-tooth comb. Much learned but too much hardship.
Very unorganized and his tests are nothing like his HWs. HWs are easy but do not prepare you for the exams at all. Test are hard and in comparison to other fin 3000 professors, he covers way too much material. Overall: not easy, and while he is not the worst choice, look elsewhere first.
I don't know how/why this prof. has such good reviews..he is a good prof. who knows Finance but does not know how to make the subject clear to the students. He is indeed confusing and his exam is quite tricky and difficult. For you to pass with a decent grade, you have to do extra studies with other textbooks besides the recommended textbook.
Exams are somehow tricky, but in general not hard as long as you practice the homework and also read the textbook regularly. Downside: his notes always contain typing errors and/or sometimes, calculating errors. But if you want to learn something and can still end up with a decent grade, take him.
AWESOME PROF. KNOWS WAT HE IS TALKING ABOUT..SO WAT IF HE HAS SOME ERRORS IN NOTES..EXAMS ARE NOT EASY..BUT U LEARN A LOT LOT. ESPECIALY FOR FINANCE MAJOR..THIS GUY REALLY KNOWS HOW TO TEACH. IF YOU UNDERSTAND THE HW..NOT JUST COPY OFF FROM SOMEONE...YOU WILL BE FINE..I GOT B+ IN MIDTERM BUT STILL GOT AN A IN CLASS. ALSO HE IS SOO HELPFULLL.
exams are just a little tricky i did not know why but overall he is a great professor who knows his subject well
He is a pretty cool guy but he is EXTREMELY DISORGANIZED. There are many mistakes on everything he hands out. He is generally fair and goes a little to fast but overall I would take his class again. He should be renamed Prof. Hassle instead of Prof. Hessle because of the mistakes but it was an interesting class. Overall worth taking.
he is the best, clear, smart, and funny...his test are mc, he grades the hw so it's important u do it. he is very nice.:)
The professor was very knowledgeable, and YES ALTHOUGH HE MADE MISTAKES, he made a not so interesting project funt to learn. The first professor at Baruch that truly impressed me.
He makes Finance very interesting and fun however HE IS VERY HARD. I haven't gotten anything below an A in three years of college and ended up with a B in his class although I understand finance very well. His tests are TOO TRICKY and do NOT relate to what is taught in class. Besides this he's a great Prof with an AWESOME personality.
Knows his stuff, very disorganized, notes full of mistakes. Hard to follow.
he knows his stuff...somewhat unorganized...very nice guy...exams are nothing like hw. exams are tricky. don't think it's that easy to get an A but a manageable grade. you'll learn. watch him ripe up a 20 dollar bill on the first day of class.
Very upbeat/will try to get the class in a good mood as he teaches. Tests are hard, so know what he teaches and what he has in his notes. He will give only 2 exams and rarely curves because the class in general does well. Good luck!
His notes are not very well organized. His class hand-outs are full of mistakes and typos. He is a fair grader. Exams also have mistakes and typos...
very concerned with minor details...has a passion for subject matter...way too theoretical and did not touch on practical matters....a good course for someone who aspires to work in the back office of a brokerage firm
Bad stuff: Notes and homeworks have errors. A little disorganized. Spends too much time on teaching how to use a calculator and not on real world finance matters. Too simple. Good: Sticks to purpose of class - intro to investments. Very basic class and he won't wow you or try to go overboard, but he gets the job done and he's a very fair grader.
Too many mistakes in exams and class notes, not enough real world examples. Too vague in explanations and poor organization skills. Ok in grading.
Very disorginized but really cares about teaching and getting the point across. I thought he was the nicest teacher I have come across yet, but somehow feel that I could of learned more and didn't. Easy Easy A.
Coures has a lot of materil that was covered by other course and the rest was easy too. But professor made that even more easy. Make thing clear to context and real life applications. do your home work, prepare from the notes and be attentive in the class and you will be fine.
Great professor. Taught exactly what you need/want from an Intro Finance class. Funny, interesting and honestly wants students to do well and learn. Highly recommended.
Excellent Professor. Cute, adorable person. He is well knowledgeable and stimulates high interest in the class. Love his class...
Although there ae some issues with some typos in notes/HW/exams, the professor really listens and exlplains any and all issues. Truly one of the best teachers I have EVER had.
good instructor in terms of explaining the material. however his choice of material is not always practical knowledge for real life
One of the best teachers I have had Baruch thus far. Really explains the materials, has a good personality, is funny and truly dedicated to his students. These are the kinds of classes I feel I get my time and money's worth.
He is the best. We LOVED his class. Very interesting and a lot of useful info. Take him!!! Yes, he has errors in his tests but he corrects them! His teaching style will make you love finance! Too bad he only teaches Fin 3000 and graduates.
Great Professor. Explains everything very simply. Tests are all multiple choice. Definitely take a class with him.
I Gave All 1 ratings because his score is way overrated. You can't really trust ratemyprofessor anymore. The guy gives reading + HW that are completely useless for all exams.. the best you will do is come out with a B and that's with effort. Don't say I didn't warn you. Take him and you'll see what I mean.
Ok this is the most recent update on this prof. He is a very nice guy and you will enjoy his class. BUT, it's not easy. The class overal average was a 63! That's a D. Exams are 30mp/each or so. So a few wrong will wreck you. reviews are ok, but they cover only 70%. Doesnt really curve. Notes are fine, book use very low. Be careful with this class!!
Yes the tests were hard and averages were 65,77, and 65. But he is generous with the grades if you showed improvement on all the tests.lets you have a cheat sheet. I attended some classes read the notes and went over the practice multiple choice and pulled a high 90's grade on final. Take him and put in effort this is primer for other FIN courses
The worst Prof in Baruch. I say that because he might seems nice, and actually is, but he is very tricky. I do not think that he corrects the exams right. I believe that he has an average to submit to the department and he play with our grade. The class wasn.t that hard and the tests, only the final was a killer, but the prof. I would not recomend
His exams are hard but not impossible. You get a formula sheet. If you can take another teacher do that.
Really Nice Guy. Class notes and homework are a waste! NOT good practice or foundation for exams by any means. VERY LOW class averages for exams. I did just about exactly what the class averages were and got an "F". I'm assuming there is NO curve. Not a horrible professor but wouldn't recommend.
One of the best professors i have had at baruch.. im a marketing major not finance but my avergae in his class was a 98 without a curve.. if you go over his notes and do the problem you will do well.. if you are confused dont hesistate to approach him, he will help and you must be clear on the material to do well..great professor i highly recommend
This class is an easy A if you come to class and do the homework. Don't buy the text. Exams strictly multiple choice. Prof is very enthusiastic, but you may be bored or disappointed if you wanted to learn a lot about finance. Biggest complaint was prof is VERY careless - lots of mistakes in notes, homework assignments, and exams.
Course is easy if you attend class and do your homework. Many questions on homeworks will be replicated on exam. The concepts presented in class are very easy to understand and are not explored in depth. Very introductory class for finance major. Many errors in notes, homeworks and exams. Easy A.
I worked my ass off! The class average was 65, mine - 89. And I got B+. But I think he curved the bottom grades. 3 Exams. They are tricky!!! We stayed for 2 hours on the final because some aspects weren't studied in the class. He is good and interesting but if you are not FiNmajor and have no interest in FIN, then do not take him. Good Luck!
The nicest professor I've had. Will make you fall in love with Finance. Soooo enthusiastic and funny. Exams follow homeworks format so just be on top of the latter.
Best Finance prof. @ Baruch hands down. His notes might have errors in it, but at least he gives you notes. Love his teaching style and he's passionate about the material and teaching.
Great professor. But lots of typos and mistakes on notes, assignment and exams make things confusing at times. Means well and enjoys teaching.
Prof Hessel is quite useless. He does NOT give students a chance to ask questions and if you have a question, you have to interrupt him. His notes are incomplete, and contains typos, and does NOT use the textbook. Very poor at explaining concepts. He doesn't realize that 90% of students in class are lost.
I loved him! I took him for Fin 3000 and decided to be a finance major after him. Believe me, Baruch doesn't have good FIN professors but he is the best. I do wish that he would be teaching more classes! Take him if you want to learn. Got B+ by studying a lot!
Good class. Too much homework and you may get bored easily if you have done any of the work before. But a good teacher.
He makes a boring topic as interesting as can be. Good teaching style, it is easy to learn the material from him. Homeworks are good for brushing up on what you learn in the lectures. Textbook was no help at all, though...
Are his exams quizzes, essay type questions, or projects?
I didn't like his teaching style but it's still easy to learn the material from him. His lecture notes are good and if you take good notes in the class, you're fine. He has tons of typos which is frustrating. Yet, homeworks are good for brushing up on what you learn in the lectures. Book is useless. I got 98 in a class w/84 average. Exams are easy.
great professor...he tries his best to help you understand~~the exams are much harder that what he did in class. i did really bad in his class since i am not interested in finance. but many people in the class got good grade
One midterm, final and used homework manager. Online homework is easy points but test were difficult. MANY errors on both the tests, most problems didn't make sense. He even found errors as we were taking the final. The class average was well below failing. I would stay away!
He loves to teach and sometimes goes off on a tangent. Notes have multiple spelling errors. One midterm, one final, a few HWs and a small project. Overall a good teacher, but lots of learning on your own. Did not use textbook at all. Allows formula sheet on tests.
Pro: He is extremely talented at teaching this class (prob. one of the best) Con: Tests are ridonculous if you dont throughly study the material. What he teaches is not hard at all (maybe a credit to his teaching style) but if you dont re-read the notes he creates for the class, re-do practice exams and read the book you wont do well. I got a b- :(
He is the absolute worst professor I have ever had and I am angry that I paid to attend this class. He is horribly disorganized and makes many errors on his exams, notes and homeworks. There were at least 10 questions on our final exam where he made errors (which was this morning, January 3rd at 8:30 AM - thanks for the Christmas vacation ****
Good overall. Interesting, very nice guy, but hard tests. He talks a lot about how everyone will do well, there is a curve, etc. So I was disappointed when there was no curve in the end. Do the homework and you'll do fine.
He is one of the BEST professor I've met. He knows his field and is extremely helpful. He makes the boring topic very interesting. If you actually pay attention to his lecture and take notes well, you will learn so much from him than from the textbook. His exams are easy if you actually understand the material not memorizing the quizes. Recommended
This professor was a total mess. He spent most of his time correcting his own mistakes or having us correct them because he didn't realize. His notes (riddled with mistakes) does not match up to the homeworks and the homewors don't match up to the textbook. This professor needs to revise the entire course.
The professor is really trying to help students understand the material. There are a lot of typos in the material, but he is trying to correct them as best as possible. Overall, a good class, but could be improved. Tests are not that hard if you understand the material. Homework helps a lot with the final grade. Overall, recommended!
The king of typos at Baruch! But that doesn't make him a bad professor. DO NOT BUY THE TEXTBOOK. I bought it but never opened it during the semester, even once. You'll learn 95% from his notes that you can print out from Blackboard, and 5% from the Internet. Exams are multiple-choice. You'll need a Texas Instrument "BA II Plus" calculator.
great professor, one of the best I've had so far at Baruch, he really cares about students and wants everyone to learn. He's always available for questions and more than happy to help. It's true that he has typos throughout his notes, on homeworks and on the tests but he makes up for it by giving extra credit on exams. Really nice guy
I learned so much from Prof. Hessel! Yes there are typos in his notes, but all you need to do is mention it to him and it benefits everyone. His typos NEVER took away from the lessons and his effectiveness. He takes the time to meet with you when you need him and his stories and humor make for a great class. He has such great experience, too.
Too many typos and general confusion. He obviously knows the material very well, but sometimes seems more concerned with being everyone's friend than teaching so we understand it. Doesn't provide real world examples. Textbook went unopened, a waste. Homework helped a lot with final grade. Tests not too difficult, 40 m. c. questions.
Professer Hessel is GREAT!! Best professer I had. HW's, 1 midterm & 1 final, both MC. Extremely clear in his lectures & very knowledgable. Yes, typos in the materials he prepared but not a problem at all. Don't know my grade yet but will DEFINITELY take him again in other FIN classes. Don't buy text book.
I hate Finance and do not understand it at all but he is such a great professor that I got an A in the class!! Don't buy the textbook. Just follow his notes and do the HW. Really awesome professor. Take him if you are beginner in Finance because he explains it so well!
Don't buy the book. Follow his notes, although sometimes I wonder if he makes all of those mistakes on purpose to test you, or he's really just that error-prone. Those mistakes extend to his project instructions, hw, midterm, & final. Aside from those mistakes that he readily admits to, he's a good instructor and works hard to foster understanding
This guy is a joke. He makes mistakes on everything from HW to notes to the exams. He does not give credit for questions with typos on exams. The guy went to Paris the last week of classes, what professor who cares about his students does that. BC of him being prone to errors you have no confidence in the test questions. If you have an option do no
Very good professor. Explains everything and gives fair exams
great guy! Really knows his material and can explain well. He moves a little fast so its helpful if you read the book before class.
Great Professor.Really teaches basics well.Loved learning with him.He has so much knowledge and is really helpful.
Great professor! Very knowledgeable and willing to make sure you learn the material. Tests are like the homework but a little bit more difficult. I didn't use the textbook once. Do the homework's with a classmate to ensure you get all the maximum points.
Great guy. Really cares about his students and is really good at turning complex topics into stuff third graders could understand.
Hilarious, knowledgeable, makes it easy for you to do well esp for the struggling. Homework helps get the material down but tests are harder. Formula sheet permitted. Focuses on investments. Only downside: frequent typos, which can really throw you on an exam where numbers have to line up. He?ll throw away any badly worded/typo questions though.
Prof Hessel is on point. He knows this stuff and relates it to the real world. Pay attention to every word he says, write it down, and you'll be fine by studying just that. Some found it helpful to record the class. Just make sure you print his notes before coming to class. DO NOT BUY THE BOOK!
He is very helpful in office hours and cares that everyone understands the material. Great sense of humor. Uses his own notes, but make sure to print them up and take good lecture notes. Test are based off combination of HW and notes. Do well on the HW as they can help your grade. No curve but he likes to see improvement and rewards you.
Presents difficult material very quickly, more than half the class was lost after two weeks. Tests are from the homework and textbook, still pretty difficult. You will learn a lot about fixed income but it won't be easy.
Amazing professor has great intuition for structuring lessons. Hessel gives students a clear path to learn a lot of material efficiently. A good storyteller, too.
Excellent professor who explains the concepts very well. Also very accommodating to the students quests and requirements. Helps the students out in case of any difficulties. Very approachable
Great Professor
Wonderful professor! Listen to him carefully in class, do the homework and you will do well. The exams were pretty straightforward.
Course is well taught not requiring much effort from the student
Prof Hessel is a good teacher & very fair, but makes so many typos. You don't need the book & he tells you that on the 1st day, however, I personally found the material difficult to learn w/out any additional resources. He kind of just jumps into a subject real fast. My advice is to use his notes & use Investopedia a lot as as supplemental resource
He is very harsh. I deserved better on my exam. He is so tough. Wont nudge. Regret taking him. Wish I listened to my friends.
His grading criteria is very confusing. The exams are are really hard and you have to study on your own. The homework's always seemed to have mistakes in it which made the concepts more difficult. You have to spent a lot of time just studying this class. He is quite boring so you have to do whatever you can to stay awake
has multiple mistakes/errors in his powerpoint slides and hw which made him postpone due dates. very disorganized professor and his terrible teaching is masked by his kindness and great speaking skills. Exams are all short answer & the instructions on his sample exam for a question was "Im looking for 6 observations and wrap up conclusions" (lol)
Expect to study outside of classroom. He is very kind and funny. He is also smart and accessible in office hours. His mistakes do not make him a bad professor. If you actually listen to his lectures, you will learn, the choice is yours. Exams are EASY work, since there are no surprises.
terrible teaching skills + short answer questions for exams overall bad experience. avoid him as he is a tough professor and the class is hard
most incompetent professor ever. Multiple mistakes on every powerpoint slide such as errors, typos and grammar choice is not english. He is very lazy and does not respond to emails. Have to self teach the material because of his poor teaching skills but since his powerpoints have multiple mistakes it is very hard to do so. Please avoid
he would make up terms such as nested options which doesn't have a google definition (try googling nested options lol). he once pronounced $3,425,000 as 34 thousand and 250 dollars (have voice recording). He wrote 46+1.17 47.7 in his hw solutions. He would word things on exams so weird that u would have no clue what the question is even asking
His age is definitely effecting his teaching performance. He makes tons of mistakes on both his homeworks and exams (because of this we received curves for every exam). Not all of the information are on the slides, so be sure to attend his class and read the textbook chapters in case you don't understand.
3 test they are always 50 math and 50 conceptual powerpoint slides not all that helpful missing small steps just not worth the effort tbh. He doesn't care. You could never show up for class and still pass you would probably be better off not coming his lectures r confusing cause he comes up with his own terms. study everything n u might still fail
Terrible educator!
There are numerous mistakes on his PowerPoint slides, practice problems, and even the exam. He lectures consists of him reading off of slides. Grading criteria consist of group assignments, two midterms, one final, and one group presentation (easy). It was very difficult for me to pay attention to him and self-taught myself the material.
Professor Hessel is really sweet, and I found him fine as a professor for the base finance class. He is a good professor for his exams since he makes his own homework (we didn't use connect). It is tough material so he tries his best for everyone to do well. Departmental final, so we learned a little differently making the exam tough. Small curve.
Nice dude but makes a lot of mistakes on the exam and hw. Bad lecturer that speaks way too fast, you definitely need to study a lot on your own. No curve ever and does not round up final grade even if he promises at the beginning of the semester. To be safe, don't take him.
One of the worse professor in baruch. just don't take him.
This professor is complete joke, he doesnt teach anything and he gives link to watch video on you tube and those videos are 2 to 3 hours long. He makes mistakes grading paper all the time. He is one of the worst professor by far. Video links are for every chapter.
I feel bad for Baruch colez cuz there is professor like him who doesnt give damn about student and doesnt teach anything . So many students dropped class any failed . Do yourself favor by not taking him. I completely regret taking him
Horrible, terrible, ridiculous all fits to him. Just avoid taking him since this class is not easy. All the comments about homework and video links are 100%right.
By far the worse professor in Baruch. He speaks so fast and doesnt explain well and very confusing. So many video links and homeworks. His class ruined my gpa. Be careful before registering classe.
Awful, grumpy, terrible
Funny guy but he makes a lot of mistakes on exam/hw. 3 exams only and are all pretty hard. He makes up his own hw questions but you can find some of them online. Speaks really fast, hard to grasp on to important concepts in class. Try to find a better professor if you can. NO CURVE!
A great professor
The final isnt departmental anymore, so hes the best option. Instead of connect, He makes his own HW. Exams will be these same problems with different numbers. Class average is like B/B-. Im averaging an A and feel confident for the final. Only bad thing is his slides have typos and could be written better, he could use some COM 1010 lessons LOL.
This professor is great extremely knowledgeable, but if this is your final semester and u have other classes like Bpl avoid this professor the work load is alot and extremely time consuming.
Avoid
Really great professor. He cares about his students and wants them to succeed. It was nice to have a professor who showed compassion towards his students, especially during these unprecedented times.
One of the best professors I had at Baruch MBA in 2012. Very clear, very inspirational. He makes material very simple and clear. I liked him so much that I even took second class with him (smth about bonds). He's a fair grader.
