He is very kind professor, he explains very clearly and thoroughly. Hes very helpful and considerate. Hes very approachable and friendly. I hope that I can take all my bio courses with him.
The exams can be pretty tough so make sure you attend class and do the readings in the textbook as well. Key to this class is having a good understanding of the material rather than basic memorization. Although the exams are hard, he's an excellent professor, deserves more credit!
Super approachable, you can message him on his discord and he will get back to you within a couple minutes! Goes super into detail and gives a lot of examples to help material sink in. Exams are hard, so make sure you actually understand the material deeply and be able to apply the information you learn, memorization will not get you far.
An absolute gem of a professor. Although lectures are recorded and uploaded on the class site, I would suggest going to class as he uses the board to illustrate helpful diagrams and there are also clicker questions to gain some extra participation points. If you have the opportunity to take a class with him, I highly recommend doing so!
This guy is an amazing prof, and you'll finish the course understanding the material rather than memorizing. His lectures are straightforward, and he cuts out any unnecessary information. The tests are pretty hard, but there are no surprises and he's very accessible outside of class . He cares about his students, just don't expect an easy mark.
THIS IS THE SINGLE BEST PROFESSOR/TEACHER I'VE HAD THE FORTUNE TO BE TAUGHT BY IN MY LIFE. PLEASE TAKE HIM IF YOU GET A CHANCE. The tests are pretty difficult and require critical thinking but this is very understandbly not his fault as its the nature of intro BIO. You can see this by how open he is to questions, willing to help in any way. <3
He is a very kind man. I am an upper year student graduating. In my years of undergrad he has been the most approachable. He will try his best to explain the material. The tests are difficult. Although, its not his fault. They are also made in collab with another prof. If you have to take BIOL100 you should with him!
He is a good prof. BUT the class tests are not fair at all. They are extremely difficult. He explains material well, simplified and easy to follow. But that doesn't translate well for the tests. I am really hoping they bell curve because the tests were not fair.
Grading format has no room for learning reflection. If you get it wrong too bad u lost the mark. No learning curve
I find this prof rather condescending at times and the structure of the course isnt flexible. There are graded assessments every week and guidelines are vague. I can see that hes trying to make it interactive and fair but I honestly did not enjoy this course.
Took this class in the winter term of 2020 and he was an amazing prof. His exams are more application based and require critical thinking, he emphasizes understanding concepts more than just remembering. The unexpected transition to online at the end of term was hard on us all but he remained readily available to help students. Overall great prof!
This was a challenging course. You have to sit and think critically and logically in order to understand, which makes it very interesting. Dr. Jang was very fair with the way he designed the course as well as the content covered. He is also the most accessible professor I have had thus far, with many different ways to get in touch.
HE is actually very caring professor but I believe he should have spent more time on teaching rather than designing hard exams and assignments ( probably to avoid cheating).I could not sleep during the assignment week due because of his hard, not understandable assignments I am sure all ppl who got high mark are not first-time takers of this course
His assignments actually require you to go to the lectures and listen to his explanations and his assignments are all interconnected so you can't skip not learning one. He did a good job with making the deadlines clear but this course consumed all my weekends. Since we did not go to the lab the techniques were so hard to learn esp western blots.
Dr. Jang is a very caring professor who spent a lot of time trying to help other students understand concepts. He was available any day to answer questions using discord. The assignments are quite tough and require a thorough understanding of the material to answer. As a computer science student, I'm glad I took this biology course with Dr. Jang.
Dr. Jang is a great professor and did a good job with the course. The concepts in lectures are explained really well and the assignments given are fair and touch on concepts learned in readings and lectures. He is very accessible on discord and goes above and beyond for students making sure they understand everything before going to the next topic.
I think hes really nice but alot of the time when you ask him stuff hes like what do you mean or does not explain it clearly, but his grading criteria is clear and fair, so not hard to end up with an A or A+ in this course if you understand the material!
Dr. Jang works hard to (successfully) make the material he teaches relevant and interesting for students. I found that the expectation for the class were clear and the lectures, while not mandatory, helped me do well in the assignments. He is resposive and listens to criticisms or issues students might have. Would highly recommend taking his class.
Awful professor. He is very aggressive to students and a very arrogant person overall. Does not help students and simply tells them to "read the question". Spends all his time trying to catch cheaters instead of actually helping the students that need it. Speaks to students with an attitude and thinks he is a "know it all". Definitely belittling.
He is very aggressive with students, he doesn't like helping people. He created a discord server to help students but he just ended up saying "reread the questions". The marking was very inconsistent, the only good thing about him was bonus marks. He also is too caught up with catching "cheaters" he should help students instead.
This course was truly amazing in my opinion. Even though this course should be taken in a laboratory and not online, the way in which this course was conducted was inspiring. Dr. Jang explains each concept as if you are conducting the experiments yourself. The assignments are not easy and require critical thinking, but a good mark is achievable.
He is one of the best prof I've ever had in york however, although there is a week to finish the assignment, THEY ARE EXTREMELY HARD!!! it's not you can find the answers in the lower level textbooks or the internet, NOR in the videos/materials that he posted. It gave me so much anxiety while doing the assignments.
He is a really great professor if you are willing to do the work as well. He explains things really well even in an online course and you feel like you are performing the labs. He explains concepts so many times if someone asks to do so or if someone is confused about that so I don't agree with the negative reviews here and I recommend taking this.
poor slides, poor explanations, vague yet has specific tests. took this class my last semester at york and he's one of the worst teachers I've had. Put in the hard work, teach things yourself with khan academy/youtube
No way I'd be doing this well with another prof. His slides are mainly just pictures which is fine because he explains everything you need to know in detail and into its entirety. He gives us midterm questions which prepare you well for the type of questions you'll see on the midterm.
I meant PRACTICE midterm questions. Questions that help prepare you and get you really thinking.
lectures are super vague, may even say dogwater. he never actually teaches the information needed. says that stuff needs to be "learned" and not memorized even though he doesn't give any info at all. when asked a question, never fully answers just refers to something else. hes a half nut, tests become very specific which bugs me a lot. worst 5 prof
BEWARE! Assignments have nothing to do with lecture of course material. Readings are too complex for second year undergraduate biology. He does not care about students. Makes exams/assignments VERY hard. He's good at explaining, but whats the point when the assignments have nothing to do with what he teaches. You're on your own in this class.
His assignments are ridiculous. They're riddled with trick questions that make you doubt your own intelligence, the marking scheme is very unfair (6 marks for a one-sentence answer 20% of the mark), and the feedback from the TAs is vague at best. It's insane! The only reason why I took this course was that the pandemic closed in-person labs.
Assignments are straight forward, he'll answer all your questions, makes sure students understand the content, caring,
He is very straightforward with the course structure and what he expects from students which is great. The course was well organized and we have so many resources to contact him and ask questions. Also delivers the content in an easy way for students to engage. Overall a great prof :)
What I enjoyed most was how the assignments included readings of ACTUAL scientific literature. We were able to gradually use what we've learnt throughout the course to understand the main ideas behind these works, and it honestly felt like you are actually gaining something. Its a great challenge for students, personally I loved it
Don't get me wrong, the assignments for this course were one of the most challenging tests that I had to do, but I feel like this is probably the only course where I actually learned new material during the pandemic. Dr. Jang is really accessible throughout the course and is willing to answer your questions. Attend the lectures as they're important
Dr. Jang is honestly a really funny guy and very approachable for questions. He provides lots of clarification and holds several Q&A sessions. You have to attend the lectures to understand the assignments.
Dr. Jang is a very knowledgeable professor and gives inspirational and engaging lectures. 30% of the mark is by things like quizzes etc. There are 5 assignments in total and there are not easy, to say the least. Dr. Jang definitely makes you work for the mark but getting a good mark is not impossible. Make sure you ask questions!
The material he taught in lectures was clear but the assignments were too specific and he expects us to know everything beforehand. The TAs will not give marks if you wrote the correct answer but in different words and the feedback is so vague there is no way to know the correct answer. The only good thing was that he's accessible outside class....
Professor Jang taught concepts well and the lectures definitely cleared up the areas I had trouble with. The assignment questions were okay, but sometimes I thought that the questions were too in-depth compared to what we learned in class. He's a pretty fair prof, but be careful with regrading requests.
Hard marker, Hard tests. DO NOT TAKE
Initially I was intimidated by prof Jang, but he actually has a Wittyness about him that dissolves that impression . He really brought bio to life for me. His course is focused on ur understanding of the material which is why his exams are challenging . Take this course if you actually want to learn something ! Attend lectures they're pertinent.
this course is very detailed but the content was explained fairly well from the videos posted. his live lectures were not really necessary to attend. no midterms but there is a final that matches the assignments. the assignments are the most important but they can be difficult. his discord channel is very helpful.
He is very accessible, and if he sees you are interested in learning the content better he won't mind explaining in a one-on-one zoom call. The assignments are doable, though require more focus and time than anticipated. Also includes bonus questions in the assignments. Very glad he made the final exam an assignment that's worth 15% only.
Best class ever if you're into research methods in the lab. Jang is very knowledgable and I love his wittiness. I learnt so much from this class + being exposed to higher levels of academia thru readings. ppl complain ab assignments being harder than lecture material but its rlly just common sense and application skills being put to the test.
Terrible prof! He can be rude and disrespectful to students. The assignments are boring and tedious and the marking is unfair. Although I ended up with an A I still have nothing good to say about this prof. Take with another prof if you can!
Dr. Jang is a very unhelpful and rude professor. He made the course a torture to sit in, it was boring and he did not prepare us for what was tested. Marking in his course was completely unfair. Very uncooperative when asked to review marking. I would not recommend this professot to anyone.
Awful professor. He made this course almost unbearable! He is unwilling to listen to students feedback or re-evaluatte TA marking. Stay away or suffer the consequences!!
He just reads off the slides and doesnt teach the material properly. I had to teach myself the whole course by reading the textbook. Exam was brutal. Take bio 1000 with almost any other prof and they will be better!
He gives the most boring and uninformative lectures and you will end up teaching yourself everything in his class. Difficult and unfair exam that he does not prepare you for. Any other prof is better than Jang for BIO1000.
Dr Jang is a terrible prof. He is not accommodating and is unclear about what's expected on the assignments. If I knew how hard and unreasonable his exam would be I would never have taken this course with him. Take methods with any other prof and you'll be better off!!!
He is very inconsiderate of student's needs. I literally learned nothing in his class. Run if you care about your gpa. 0/5
He is so difficult and his kids are always yelling in the background it is hard to understand !
WORST PROf EVER! DO NOT TAKE CLASS WITH THIS PROF
very rude and unprofessional. only accuses all his students to plagiarism and cheating. no useful teaching in his lectures. if you have him as a prof run for your life
There aren't many negatives, just a lot of reading, but then again it is biology. Biol1000 is highschool bio but more detailed in cellular biology. Professor does a good job answering questions and doesn't get distracted. You will have to read the textbook a lot and you will have to rewatch lectures to find the asnwers to the learning outcomes.
He is an awful prof. Run away as fast as you can!
He's rude and disrespecful towards students. Takes forever to reply to students by email. The worst university experience so far. Nevr take him!
Dr. Jang has always put an emphasis on how biology should be learned NOT memorized. I understand why some people would say his tests are not fair. Yes, I found them very challenging but I also know they were meant to train his students to think critically because biology is not easy especially when you go further into the field.
He's so full of himself, and always rude and disrespectful towards students. Lectures are a waste time. I didn't attend any of the lectures and got an A+. Tbh he doesn't do anything and just uploads youtube videos for you to watch. However, the materials were fun and interesting.
You HAVE to do the readings in this class. In high school, I had a 80 in bio and in this class I ended up getting over a 90. Just do the readings and attend class if you want to do well in the class. I suggest making a exam/test review from the learning outcomes he posts as everything on this document is examinable.
Dr, Jang did not offer any help with the course, he never replied to my emails and was very rude when I asked a question. If you have a choice never take his section of bi1000. You'll be better off with any other professor.
try to attend his lectures, he captures the core ideas and material very well, also stay on top of your readings and you will get an easy A, his exams and midterms are quite difficult because the grading is very specific, but if you understand the material well it will be fine.
Professor Jang taught the course very well, the only exception was that the tests and labs were marked hard. He explains the main points thoroughly and the lecture slides were a great resource to study from. He also hosted several review sessions before midterms and the exam which was deeply appreciated. Try to stay on top of weekly assignments.
He seems like a very nice guy, but the lectures were lacking for me. His explanations were often vague, which would be fine if tests didn't ask for specifics. Make sure you do textbook readings and understand the concepts well. He does make himself accessible outside of class and provides lots of opportunities for asking questions.
The tests are next level. Prepare to cry. I read the text book and studied like crazy and still did not do successful on the tests or exam. Its so frustrating when the lectures are mostly pictures and the lectures are not very helpful when it comes to the material on the test.
A terrible prof. Taking bio1000 with him was a huge mistake. He makes lots of mistakes in his lectures and then asks questions on exam testing you what he could not even teach. I will never take another course with him again!
Dr. Jang is really detailed in his lectures, and is more than willing to help clarify doubts. Other comments about the tests being hard probably did not expect application based questions, and thought biology was just regurgitating info, so do not let that scare you. Being on top of lectures and readings will give you the best chance at doing well
AWFUL PROFESSOR!!!!
Prof Jang makes a lot of mistakes while teaching. He teaches very broad and says that half the stuff he teaches is beyond the scoop of the course and not important but asks for the details during his midterms and exams. His lectures are very messy and confusing.
Jang was a funny prof that made the lectures fun to attend. The assessments however, we extremely difficult and impossible to predict the kind of questions you will see on the tests. Jang said the tests would be solely lecture based, but the lectures don't go into as depth as the test questions require you to study. Nice prof, tough material.
This prof provided no support, never answered my emails and was condesending when students asked questions in class. Bio1000 with him was my worst experience in the whole first year at york...avoid classes with him
Best prof ever, took another course with him, BIOL 3140. If you understand concepts, think a bit, and the answer will be there. Less memorization and more understanding. Nice assignments, exams, tests, labs. I can take infinite courses with this prof. Easy to approach and clear your doubts. All bad reviews here are such a lie. Prof is EXCELLENT!
He is an okay prof, he is such a hard marker. slides were okay and lessons were very interesting, he's very kind yet I find that our midterms were EXTRA hard because it was online. it wasn't fair tbh but the curves were fair :) anyway I have kinda a like and dislike relationship with him. TIP: dont memorize,UNDERSTAND. if I could get an A you can!
He is rude and condescending towards students when you ask him a question and he is not helpful at all when you are trying to study for his ridiculously hard exams. Lectures are boring, he just reads off the slides. A zero out of ten professor :(
Prof was rude and condesending. Absolutely hated his class. Midterms and the final were horribly hard. He made me hate biology and I will never take his course again because he literally traumatized me. :)
Hardest bio 1000 prof hard tests like super hard expect a single digit percent does not teach anything that is tested in the tests would never take with him, the quizzes were very difficult
HE IS AWESOME HANDS DOWN BEST PROF EVER
he pretty he show off his toes
Dr. Jang does a great job teaching and he always makes himself accessible after classes for questions. My friends and I always look forward to his classes. I learnt the most from him. I should mention that this course is demanding so make sure you come with the right expectations when balancing the course load!
exams have nothing to do with actual material. Overall very difficult
Hes a very good prof, and at the beginning of the term hes probably gonna scare you into thinking hes not. He teachers material very well and his slides and very good, but you still HAVE to read the textbook. The COURSE itself is pretty heavy tho, so be on top of readings. Only bad thing, he does iclicker for attendance and it goes to your mark.
Amazing prof! He is hilarious and great at teaching. Its obvious how much he loves the subject and he made me love bio more too. Truly the best prof I've had thus far.
One of the best profs you can get for bio. His lectures went in-depth and he answers many questions during his lectures. Even brought a mic for students to use, so others can hear their questions (can also hear in the recording). 10/10 recommend.
Dr. Jang is a great prof. His lectures are interactive and captivating, and he always takes time to answer questions. Despite the course being very reading heavy, it should not be too difficult to get a B+ or more as long as you keep up with the readings and do the weekly online quizzes.
Dr.Jang is an amazing professor; he teaches the content well and he makes learning biology exciting! He definitely set the standards high for other professors and his office hours help a lot--both course related and [general] academia. I'm glad I had the pleasure of meeting him :) and I would take courses with him again!
Christopher is a great teacher, and is very interactive with the class. I will admit, I could've tried a lot harder in the course, but the midterms and weekly quizzes were very easy because he made resources available to us, even doing study sessions himself. He even wished two of our friends a happy birthday after we asked days in advance.
Chris is awesome, really funny and always makes sure to answer peoples questions, so don't be afraid to ask! Really good lectures and really good at explaining topics, and how topics are connected. Make sure to take notes on both lectures and textbook, because tests and quizzes will cover both.
His lectures are great, and he is a great person, but the tests are very hard, and some questions are borderline unfair. It is essential to do your readings and understand the concept.
Dr. Jang is an awesome teacher! He interacts a lot in class, is funny, notes are very clear and is very nice to students and takes the time to help out students if they have questions. Some other general things: his class is pretty textbook heavy, midterms are moderately hard, and make sure to take notes for both lectures and for textbooks.
Professor Jang is a very good professor. He's funny, explains concepts well, and is very clear with what is going to be on his exams. It's obvious that he cares about his students and wants his students to pass.
Just a great prof all around. His lectures were very entertaining.
GREAT LECTURES. starting from the first lecture, I knew professor Jang was going to be great. I always looked forward to his lectures at the end of my days as he explains in depth about each topic. READ THE BOOK BEFORE LECTURES and HE CARES about his students! he even brought us moon cakes to the lecture once lol
The best professor I have ever had. He explains concepts so well while also making lectures entertaining. the only annoying thing was the attendance part but overall he was an amazing prof. All lectures were recorded and notes were posted. He takes the time to explain and answer questions. Takes the time to do review and extra help before exams.
Chill professor & teaches very well. HOWEVER, it is imperative to read the textbook/readings. Most complaints about him & his tests are from people who have not read what he posts. He also explicitly states that he doesn't cover all the material as he answers every question that is asked. Attendance is needed as he has Iclickers with geolocation.
He is only "difficult" because if you are going for a bare minimum but getting an A, you're going to find the class hard and the professor difficult. He's a great professor, passionate about what he is teaching, and explains concepts in very simple ways. Tests are heavy because they are based on the understanding of the material but not impossible
LOVE HIM!! Hilarious and caring in lecture and obviously cares about the students. Responsive to feedback and works to improve from it. Best bio prof
This professor is very Rogue Very insane No manners Made my life hell got me anxiety. I dont think he made my career best.
I had him for biol1000 so this may be biased. I thought he structured the course perfectly. He honestly made it for your success. You learn critical skills in the lab and real world problems. Prob the only course that actually enables you to perform things u have learned throughout taking bio courses ur entire life. Course is very straightforward.
If you see his name, you're lucky, take the course! The amount of effort he puts into every single session is admirable. Absolutely caring. Very interactive lectures. Expectations are crystal clear. Lectures do prepare you for the exams. Very approachable and responsive outside the class.
ion you want a nice prof at York this is your guy, he is hilarious, lectures recorded, make learned for attending and answering questions via poll. he takes his time explaining. he has multiple EASY tasks to do for marks, literally. also just like review his midterm and slides for the exam your all set. we all made him a present at the end the term
the very best so far
Professor Jang's biol2070 course was very easy and a bit boring. I feel that the course is practically a bird course, I would recommend taking this course for a good grade even if you are not a bio major lol. Course is marked a lot by just completing ur labs, doing in-class iclicker quizzes, and practically a take-home exam.
Professor Jang is the best professor I have ever met, he truly cares about his students and loves teaching. His lecture is very clear, and the test is not hard. I recommend everyone take his class, you won't regret it.
This prof has an amazing way to teach. He's engaging by using Iclicker. PLEASE do not skip out on this as he will go through each answer and explain why one is wrong/ right. He will stay after class to answer questions. His lectures are very clear and easy to follow. He will spend time breaking down complex concepts into easier concepts to digest.
He is probably one of the best professors (if not the best) in biology department. I'm in third year, yet he has been the best BIOL professor thus far. I've had BIOL 1000 and 2070 with him. The way he lectures makes it really hard to not understand the stuff in the course. Do not hesitate taking with him, you will love both him and the course.
Great prof. Had him last year. I'm not a bio major but I really enjoyed his class, managed to get an A+ without doing any of the assigned reading. He records lectures but does iClicker for participation. He teaches really well, just super easy to understand.
Simple easy to follow lectures, the most time of the course is spent during labs. Gives you lots of information of how the final will look. Solid prof overall
One of the better profs I had at york. Passionate about the material, very good at using real-world examples to explain concepts and makes class fun. I would recommend doing the supplemental readings if you want an A+, but most of the material is covered in the lecture so don't worry too much if you couldn't get the week's reading done.
He is an amazing prof. Lectures are not boring, he allows students to ask as many questions as they want. The slides are not heavy and are mostly examples. The labs are very fun, you are in groups and you will learn lot of useful techniques. The final was very fair, based on class and lab material.
I did not like him. He was a good professor, but he had an arrogance about him that genuinely annoyed me. Made me not want to attend lectures.
Looking back, I could've gotten an A+ in this course, but this prof was so horrible that I literally could not focus on anything related to bio. Already hate biology, he just made it worse by the fact attendance was mandatory, what a waste of time.
The professor has an engaging teaching style. Attend lectures to fully grasp the concepts - they are well-explained and prepare you for exams. Unstuck study was a great supplement for study prep.
The course is easy A+ if you're good in lab stuff.
so annoying
Dr Jang is an amazing professor who cares about his students and really makes an effort for everyone to do good. This class is mostly composed of labs so you wont see him much but when you do it's a good experience. He gave us a redacted version of the exam and overall prepared us well for labs and everything else. Take him!
