The worst professor I've come across in my entire college experience, and I'm a junior. He is rude, incompetent, clueless, unclear, and damaging to the reputation of Cal-State Long Beach's Journalism Department. He refuses to discuss his past career experience which leads me to believe he has none. ***WARNING DO NOT SIGN UP FOR HIS CLASS**
Three-quarters of the way into the semester and I had not learned A SINGLE thing from this professor that I did not already know. He is very vague when explaining assignments. He is NOT helpful whatsoever. I recommend you take ANOTHER teacher. This class is supposed to set the foundation for all other JOUR classes. It was a waste of my time.
if you are not an idiot, you read the book, listen to his explanation and try to stay attentive you should do fine. he's funny once you figure out what he's trying to say. very fair. class is kind of easy really.
He was awsome! This is the easiest class i've taken because all of the assingments are fun. If he has a quiz or test he tells you exactly what to know and study. Plus everything that you read about is encorporated into an assingment so its fun! And he's hot
He seems to be actually concerned about his students and has a lot of experience.
The absolutely bestest class I've ever taken at this college! The funniest professor, too! And he cares about his students a lot. Top stuff!
Tough material, thoughtful professor, moronic students. Karadjov handled a difficult class with great skill and fairness. Kudos.
My favorite class and my favorite professor, period! He is soooo knowledgeable. Take this class with Karadjov only!
Kradjov is a great teacher. He cares for his students, and he grades fair. I would take him.
He is just great - listen to what he says, do your work, and pick up his brain. You will gain a lot from his knowledge and experience
Karadjov recently handled brilliantly a terribly disruptive student who thought she knows everything.. He is very calm, knowledgeable and helpful. He has huge exprience. Highly recommended (don't take this class with anyone else!)
I loved this class! Karadjov is a nice guy who is easy to talk to, no matter what the subject. A little intimidating at first, but in the end it's not a stressful class. From what I hear, he seems to be the most flexible teacher for 311. Plus, he offers TONS of extra credit. Overall, an easy-going class with an interesting professor.
Cool guy, cool teacher. Very helpful and very serious about what he does - you'd better be serious too. Highly recommended.
Excellent teacher for a very tough otherwise class. Very helpful, ready to work with you a lot. Many opportunities for extra credit - but you gotta be upfront with him. Highly recommended.
Totally cool! We are three weeks into the senior seminar with him, and i can't thank enough for the luck to have this teacher!
Best senior seminar professor. Take it with him in the fall.
Nice way to tak your senior seminar. The professor is very knowledgeable and allows for lots of extra credit. The class is well structured - just follow the schedule he provides.
I really enjoyed Karadjov. His assignments are pretty easy and sometimes fun -- you just can't be lazy about doing them. He is really easy going and funny for the most part. And -- even though english is not his first language, he DEFINITELY knows english and grammar better than you..so you might want to brush up on that.
Karadjov is an amazing guy. He's lived a true journalists life and you'll learn all about it, one of your assignments is to investigate him. His class is very fun, you learn a lot, the assignments are tough but if you want to be a journalist you get a lot out of them. If you sit down and talk to him, he'll help out a lot. COOL COOL GUY
Terrific!
This guy is sooooo cool! I took a short winter class with him and I loved him! Smart, funny, direct, helpful. Don't take reporting with anyone else!!!!
Do not take the senior seminar with anyone else! He is the best, and hottest professor in the department. Period!
He's chill, he just talks sooooo MUCH it bugs. And his accent doesn't make the story anymore interesting. But he's pretty easy and assignments are doable. You can BS them, he'll never know. He likes to make friends with his students, but you can get away with almost anything if you talk to him about it first.
He is the best senior seminar prof. And I don't agree that you can get away with everything. He will catch you, if he wants to! But he is understanding about students problems.
He came to teach here media and society at KIMEP in Kazakhstan for the sumer and he is leaving soon. I envy you guys in Califronia. I wish he stayed longer in KZ. Very interesting profesor
I was so scared when this professor came with his point grading system that was much stricter than ours, and he was so stern in the beginning! But he turned out to be such a great teacher, I am so grateful i toOk this class with Karadjov! A very cool guy
yOU ARE SO COOL!!! WHAT A PITY THAT YOU GONE!!! i HOPE THAT YOU WILL COMEBACK TO KZ! THANK YOU VERY MUCH, PROFESSOR!!!
This guy is so funny! He says the most outlander things and it's even funnier because of his accent. He's a really cool guy and likes to get along with his students. Lectures can be pretty boring, but he lets you know what will be on the exams, which are pretty easy. This class is no problem and made my semester more tolerable.
I think he is a good teacher pretty easy! But some of his lectures were boring.
I also had him for 311 - Reporting before and he is the best experience I had with this department. Take him if you want to learn about international media and also about writingt and such. Very helpful and willing to work with you. Had some hard time this semester with his son bein injured but still came to class prepared and enthusiastic.Coolest!
I am taking JOUR 3111 with him now and I don't want it to end! so funny! I signed up for his Global News media as well.
awesome...even though we did not get all our work returned next day cause of the quick class, but he was available always by e-mail or text messaging. the most respnsive and coolest teach i've ever had
He is so open to students. I wish we could spend more time but this class was too fast. I learned a lot. I'll stickwith this guy
We are halfway into the semester and he has not returned our first and only essay. No one has any idea how they are doing in class, because nothing has been graded yet, and we are already halfway through! Also, class lectures are pretty boring, there's no discussion, just him talking.
Just got my grade today... he made me work for it, but I got an A!!!! He is the best!!!!!!!
started the class three days ago and i already like this prof a lot. very knowledgeable and helpful, talks a lot, but you'd better listen, he is good at what he does! lotsa career behind him. i'm lookin forward to the rest of this intersession
4 ESSAYS! 1 PRESENTATION! I'm surprised no one's mentioned the documentaries he shows in class. I think that's the only reason I came to class; and the fact that he deducts 50 points for over 2 absences (lol). The documentaries were insightful and informative. His lectures were OK. I was going to take him for 311 Intersession but no moola! oh well.
Most interesting professor for Global News Media. Makes you work, but you learn, and he is helpful to the extreme (you can text him with questions any time day or night, how about that?!!?) I am sorry he is not teaching anything i need in the fall.
Just a week left in the short 311 version I'm taking and i have learned more than in a whole semester with another profesor (who failed me in 311). Karadjov is criss, clear and direct. He uses a lot of examples from his career, plus movies, online and on-the-street practice to gather information. Great way to learn the basics of reporting.Take him!
Professor's cool. He's extremely helpful- pretty fast at returning emails. Do your best and ask questions when in doubt. He's very understanding, just don't push your luck. Attendance IS mandatory! He's a smart guy and is willing to share his knowledge!
Dedicated and accuarte with students. Ttotally worth taking 311 with. I am in his fall classs, too
Cool and interesting!
He is an extremely good teacher! Knows his stuff. The only materials I needed for the course were his personal book (for the course) only like 20 bucks. and the AP style book. I learned a lot in this course, and the Coursework was NOT demanding. Super EASY A if you attend some of the lectures and do the assignments.
Very cool teacher. Seems like he has a lot of assignments but just give yourself to do them. Not too hard of a grader. Overall he's very cool and interesting. Not hard so definitely take him!! anytime you need help just ask him he's super helpful.
Tough material, but he is so funny! I did not know someone can make so many jokes teaching dull stuff like research methods. Highly recommend you take him and only him for thsi class
He told us jokes in class! I adore this guy, he is making the material suddenly look interesting. I did not care about research methods before, but now I'm kinda hooked
Wonderful teacher! I will take classes with him in the future. Don't miss class, don't worry about the midterm, he's on your side. Projects sound challenging but are fun and helpful in understanding. I chose the major because of him. He goes above and beyond to help you succeed. Plenty of chances to get an A. CSULB needs more teachers like him.
This dude made even research methods interesting! I never cared about that subject before. He made us do a fun project and all ended being so educational. Coolest teach in the department, by far
Taken by the storm that is Karadjov! What a stud!
Took this class based on the previous comments. Easy class, he's funny, but he doesn't come to class prepared. Kind of breezes through lectures. If you do the reading, an easy A. Overall, I'm "whatever" about it.
Take his class if you have the opportunity. I chose Jour as my major because of him. Very clear on expectations, very reasonable with work. Karadjov is very entertaining and approachable if you require extra help. A good grade is attainable but it won't be given to you without the effort.
I felt that he made attendance mandatory just so people would show up. His lectures can be amusing at times but there's no direction or clarity. His grading is weird as well. Bug him enough and he may change your grade. I actually thought he was kind of creepy.
If you do your part, you will learn a lot and he'll support you. If you don't care, it's your problem. I cannot understand those who said they did not like his style - they were likely not good students to start with. I chose Karadjov and will stick with him for as many classes as I can during my major. Total dude and great advisor!
Thank you Karadjov for a wonderful semester! I will recommend this prof over and over
Just started my winter class with this prof and all they say about him is true. Really funny guy and very knowledgable. Will see how it goes on i n the next weeks
My best winter class! He made me work my butt off, tho
People only rate this teacher well because he is easy, but I didn't learn. I got an A in his class, so this isn't a bad review because I did poorly. He constantly goes off topic in lecture. Whatever I learned I learned from the book. Attendance is mandatory and I do believe its because no one would come to his lecture otherwise.
I didn't learn anything from him. I learned more from the movies and the online discussions. Everyday we would come to class, he never had a lecture prepared and would ask us "so what else?". It wasn't meant to be a group discussion class. I was also rude. I would suggest any other journalism class but this one.
I wonder at the student who said they learned "only" from movies and online discussions. Are you blind? A good professor lectures you. A great one makes you think for yourself!! Karadjov gives food fro thought.
Ah...it's almost over. Cool dude
He can be a bit absent minded sometimes, and some of our assignments were not returned promptly. But if you take him up on his offer to work with him, he will help you a lot and you will develop a valuable professional relationship. He goes out of his way to support students and finds internships and jobs for them!
Karadjov helped me a lot, even advised me to rewrite the final paper (before the deadline), even though I had submitted it earlier. He cares about his students. Too bad we had some in the class who did not seem to get it time after time
Rock solid if you pay attention. Lotsa stuff to learn from him and lots of work!
Liked him in two other classes already. Looking forward to taking Mass Comm Theory in the fall. He is very devoted and ready to give you a lot. Stick with him. Euro sense of humor.
I can't believe this guy has all of these good ratings! By far one of the most absent-minded careless teachers I have ever had. We have 3wks left in the semester and the only thing graded is a scantron midterm. He hasn't graded any papers/discussions but expect us to have two more papers in by the end of the semester! LAZY.
I LOVE this professor. I've taken a lot of classes with him over the years. While his lectures are rather dry and repetitive, he is very helpful and gives lots of fun assignments! Also, he is always there to help you out after you finish a class. Once a student of his, always a student. One of my favorite teachers ever.
He will do a lot for you if you show interest. If you don't care, he won't chase you. Use Karadjov's knowledge, he is such an encyclopedia!
Excellent prof. We had a very short class (winter session) and yet I still learned so much from him. He also offers his help to students and brings them to the newsroom so they can start writing even though he is going on a sabbatical and does not have to be at school. That's dedication to match!
One of my favorite professors, ever. He is off teaching for the moment, recovering from a spinal cord injury. Hang in there, Karadjov!
Lectured a lot and got off topic, but all around a great teacher. Always willing to help and has reasonable expectations.
I admire Karadjov! He is on a leave for the entire year because he almst died in an accident and still finds the time to organize events for students. What a devotion!
V cool prof. Cracks me up!
Karadjov is the professor to take for this class! There are 3 online discussion a midterm and 3 papers(2 mini essays and a final paper). This class is not hard to receive an A... Just do the work and you should be fine. If you need help, talk to him he is really helpful on your papers! I would recommend taking him.
Lazy! Lazy! Lazy! I didn't see my grade except multiple choice until end of the semester. .
He knows a lot, more than you will ever care to learn about media theory.
Took his summer Global News Media and loved it. He had short video lectures, readings, mini lectures, texts, links, discussions - you name it. I have not had a professor who uses such a variety of tools ever before. Learned quite a lot. I'm taking his Reporting JOUR311 now.
The coolest wheelchair dude ever! His dry humor in classroom is awesome and he stayed loyal to students even though the got sidelined by a horrible injury a month before the end of the semester. I'm sold on global news media now. Much recommended!
Loved the chillness of Karadjov.
He got some assignments graded later than I would have loved to, but it's amazing how this man can even function given his disability. He knows a lot and kicks butt in classroom - so funny! If you are prepared to read, want to learn and get exposed to new ideas, Karadjov is for you. He always found time to talk iwht me. My group project sucked, tho
He is a hilarious dude. Such a dry sense of humor
He is willing to spend time with students mentoring them. Very informal and approachable. Pick his brain, he is a treasure of knowledge about media!
Professor Karadjov is an awesome person, but not a great professor. His lectures are just him talking about himself or telling jokes. His assignments don't have rubrics or explanations. He shows up late to every class but hates when students are absent. He does not grade assignments until the semester ends. If you want to learn, don't take him.
Did my internship under Karadjov's supervision this summer. He was willing to spend the time to work with me and my boss on some issues I had. Very approachable and accommodating. My boss commented that no other professor has ever called her to discuss a student's internship.
He is a an excellent, but quite unusual professor. Yo are best served if you take him up on his mentorship offer. He is not the one to teach to the textbook but he is a trove of knowledge especially in international media/affairs.
He did not post anything on Beachboard until week 7 & this is an online only class. It is finals week and he has only graded 3 things from the entire semester. Huge final paper with a proposal needed for approval that he did not give back until a week before the paper is due. I have no idea where I stand and he was absent almost the entire semester
A thoughtful professor. Can be somewhat disorganized, but sharp as a tack and very knowledgeable. Talk to him a lot!
Is very nice but sometimes he didnt show up for class. He kept moving our midterm over and over again. It was so close to the end that I didnt know how was doing. Shows LOTS of videos and talks about self LOTS. Old stories.
The most interesting media law class I could imagine. Very passionate about the elections and brings relevant examples every time. Hot!
Students who did not like this professor were not ready for the level of work he demanded. Plain and simple. I enjoyed the videos he posted, the class had a tight schedule in advance and I had to work hard to get my grade. Get your ducks in a row if you want to succeed, but boy will you learn!
This class is as prof. Karadjov said, "The class students don't want to take, and the class professors don't want to teach." It's a tedious class but he is a generous grader. He does show up late half the time and often goes on tangents with lectures but he genuinely likes the subject he is teaching. Book is essential. Study groups are a good idea
Global News Media is a class choke-full of information. Be prepared to work hard, but it will pay off. He offers tons of extra credit.
The entire first half of the semester he was pressing everyone to participate more. He wanted everyone to post a couple times a day in a discussion board driving down the quality of conversations on the threads. He ghosted on us mid semester right after the first major paper was due around March and didn't grade it until after the semester ended.
Excellent professor for the online class. Lots of work, so be prepared to read a lot and see many documentaries, plan ahead. Fair grader, but not easy. If you do the work, he'll be out there for you. Very knowledgable.
Took his Reporting (311) class. Best part about Karadjov - he knows a lot and he has so many contacts! He took us to several events on campus, in LA and OC. Opened my eyes.
Media Law is a hard class. It is very dense with lots of material to learn, but in the end, Chris does make you learn it. Weekly quizzes, midterm, and a open ended question final. The final is cumulative and is one of those things that you want to be over prepared with. Study groups really help. Doesn't grade things fast so can be frustrating.
Take this class, you'll not regret it! You will learn a lot and the discussions with Prof. Karadjov are of the most interesting kind. He is quick-witted and extremely knowledgable.
Small summer class, 12 students, lots of interaction with prof, quick responses. Lots of work tho!
Took him for Media Law, I'm taking him again for reporting. He makes you work hard, but it's worth it. Don't take him if you are lazy or don't understand the value of your education. Best sense fo humor also!
Word of advice: read up! Passionate about media law and free speech.
Tough grader but knows his stuff.
Very minimal info about social political roles the degree of gov pressure and control of media Nothing about structure ownership Broad nonthought provoking weekly discussions first paper not even minimal thinking involved course overall Prof constantly reminded us of assignments no feedback didnt engage with students with the readings
The previous comment makes no sense. Global News Media has an entire section on censorsy and another on social and political changes inflicted by the new media - and the commenter certainly has to read them! This professor teaches lots of interesting material, demands a lot and rocks the best online videos.
Karadjov is a great teacher but he's very old school. Most lectures are done verbally with no power-points or videos. It's hard to take notes, so you rely heavily on the book. He provides study guides and supplemental files that hep you understand the material but you need to be really active in your own learning. Weekly quizzes, midterm and final.
He will make you read and participate. He will be responding to your questions if you bother to ask. I got the feeling that he never sleeps. It's worth it, but lots of work! Great class.
Pay attention and participate and you will do well!
Terrible professor! Had him for two classes in one semester and it was a nightmare! Always late, cancels class 5 minutes before starting, rude, he didnt grade anything until the last two weeks of the semester. I didnt know my grade until the week before our final! Dont ever take him
Worst professor I've ever had. I've never met a professor that cares less for his students success. He doesn't communicate with his class, or always respond to emails. He provides no instruction or guidance. For our final he didn't post for 3 weeks, ignored emails, and then just sprung our 250 pt exam on us. No regard for his students.
The worst Professor Ive had. Gave an outdated syllabus in the beginning and rarely provided any guidance throughout the semester. I thought something bad happened to him because he didnt post on beachboard for almost a month. He doesnt update grades until finals week. His lack of communication shows he could careless about his students.
If you want a Professor who doesn't communicate with the class, updates your grades during the last two weeks of the semester, and gives unclear instructions on assignments, this is your guy. He also doesn't give feedback on assignments, and I genuinely did not learn a thing. Waste of time. Avoid this Professor if you can.
This is a class I would never take again. I did not learn anything in this class. He showed up late half the time or not at all. He canceled class 20 minutes before class. Would say he would post assignments and would post them a week later. We didn't know what our final project was until the week before it was due. Save yourself the headache.
I won't be too harsh because of COVID, but there were no assignments, only quizzes and discussions, most of which were given a grade with no feedback. It was very difficult to gauge what he wanted, but to be fair I did not utilize office hours or anything like that. I am guessing I got a B, so not too salty, but would prefer clarification.
Easily the worst class I've taken. Never taught us a thing. Left us confused basically all semester. When given assignments, he's still a tough grader even though he gives us nothing to work with. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND!
DO NOT TAKE HIM. He will start class in the middle of the semester and give random assignments and not explain it and get mad when you email him to explain. Also gave a random final so avoid at all costs
He was always late for class. His lectures, assignments, and projects were so confusing and unclear. He would assign stuff without explaining it. I didn't learn anything, which sucked bec he seemed very knowledgeable. Avoid taking online classes with him if you can.
I have never given feed back on rate my professor before, but thought I should save people and say that you absolutely should avoid taking any class with this professor. He barely grades assignments, there is no set lecture (he just talks about whatever he wants), and the assignments really don't make a lot of sense. Avoid him.
I think that Professor Karadjov is great professional journalist, yet he is not a great professor caring for his students.
don't take this class. I promise it is such a waste of your money. he won't show up, and he won't tell you. So you will just be sitting there waiting and he is just gone. He will assign really stupid assignments and lots of busy work. The class is a complete waste of time. He seems to be a great journalist but a HORRIBLE PROF.
I actually enjoyed this class very much. Though it might not be everyone's cup of tea I think it forces students like myself to get outside of our comfort zone. The structure of the class is conversation based with groupwork activities intertwined. Don't turn this class away just because of the other posts. He is worth a shot.
Heavy class with lots of material to cover but such a caring prof! He went out of his way to help us learn. The doggo is awesome!
This semester the class became about media coverage of the war in Ukraine. I liked how the professor reacted to the events by adapting our course material. We learned so much. I loved that he connected us with our peers in Russia and we could see how life is from the "other side". Dedicated, sharp professor! Take this class with him.
I am graduating so this was my last class. I failed it once because I did not do the work. I am thankful how the professor worked with me to accommodate my circumstances. It is not the professor who is difficult btw. The material is hellish. But you will need it in your professional career and at least Karadjov makes you realize that. He cares!
Took 2 weeks to post course material. Never gave us a class sched. He disappeared w/ no communication for 2 weeks. No feedback on assignments. 1 big assignment on syllabus never happened, no explanation. Final grades were due 3 days ago, still waiting on him. Never bothered reading the book, got A on all work. No lectures. Easy class, no learning.
A really good professor to engage the class of all backgrounds.
Nice professor, adorable dog! I would take him again, some things could be better like having more focused lectures. Overall he is nice and has interesting stories.
Take media law with CK! He is tough but that's the material, not his fault. He gives excellent structure and demands work at regular intervals, which makes following along much easier. Scary final exam that turned out not to be so scary. The dog is adorable!
I took this class with Dr. Karadjov in London and he was amazing, taking us on a trip to the BBC, giving us lots of opportunities to meet incredible guest speakers, and making this class one of the best I have ever taken. Study abroad is the thing! Take it with Karadjov!
This class was mid. Just be consistent. Talks a lot.
Talks a lot, but you'd better listen. He can be your inspiration in journalism.
If you want a professor that is organized, gives GOOD instructions and grades on time he is NOT the one. We had to beg him to grade our assignments (2 weeks till finals & he still hasnt graded anything). He is so last minute. Horrible communicator, makes you feel dumb when you ask a question / clarification. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
Professor Karadjov was a fantastic instructor who made a dense class digestible. His reading guides were on point, his lectures were engaging, and his expectations for assignments were clear. I'm glad that I was able to take him this semester.
Professor Karadjov has an interesting teaching style. The class can be hit-or-miss, but using study aids like ChatGPT and Unstuck study can help prep for exams.
I've never written a review on here, but I'm doing so now to give people a warning. I highly DO NOT recommend taking this online course if he is the instructor because he doesn't grade assignments in a timely manner. I'm in the last few days of the Fall '24 semester and I don't know what my actual grade is. He is so unbelievably irresponsible.
'This is a subpar paper.' Don't be fooled by older reviews; avoid taking this course with this professor if you can. He is easily the most inconsiderate and rash professor I've had during my post-secondary tenure. He will NOT respect your time — nor does he know how to provide constructive criticism and structured feedback to his students.
I can only speak for his online class which hopefully differs a lot from his in-person ones. He disappeared for a good three weeks without saying anything, I forgot I was even in the class. He then assigned the most confusing midterm I have ever taken, none of the material on the test being stuff he taught us about. Learned nothing- disappointing
Fall semester began Aug. 25. This prof. disappeared from early september until Oct. 25 with only a couple emails between to say he's catching up, until he completely ghosted us. We had to go to the Chair and the Dean & they got him to class immediately. The semester is near end, & he said we missed no learning. Over $1000 course waste. Don't take.
