Amazing Class!!! Prof. Karpowitz is the best teacher I've had at BYU! He is very caring and wants you to succeed. His lectures are very interactive and interesting. There is a lot of reading, but grading is based on participation, midterm, final, and one term paper. I would recommend this class to anyone!
great teacher. Hard, but worth it all the way if you like polisci.

Proffessor Karpowitz is an amazing teacher who came from Princeton and teaches like he is still their. The reading is pretty heavey, the lectures are deep class discussions, and the essays are graded on a high coligiate standard. Excellent Teacher, Excellent Class.
Prof. Karpowitz is great! He really wants every student to succeed. He also wants you to learn, so he is there if you need help. His courses are interesting and he brings up concepts that one would normally not consider. I highly recommend him.
Great teacher.
Very well prepared every day. I actually enjoyed the class surprisingly.
Amazing teacher! My favorite by FAR. The lectures are always fun and interesting, I learn something new every class. Lots of reading, so don't get behind. Review a lot and know your stuff...it's rewarding in the end. GREAT teacher. I would take him again for sure.
Dr. Karpowitz really cares about his students learning. He provides intensive powerpoint discussions, he goes quickly so write fast! I never liked government before AmHer, but because of the class structure and the discussions that Dr. Karpowitz leads, I now like it. Make sure you really study for the tests. They are hard, but doable.
Great teahcer! His lectures are usually pretty interesting...and he does care about his students and shows interest in their comments.
Dr. Karpowitz does a great job of combining the secular history we had to learn, comments from the church, and fun film clips. I had heard horror stories about this class before I took it, but it really wasn't too bad with Karpowitz. He cares about his students and has a strong testimony. Tests weren't too bad, either. Try to take from him!
Good Professor for American Heritage. One of the easier, yet I learned a lot. Class was easy, as long as you read most of the assigned material and ATTEND LECTURES. Awesome class.
AWESOME experience! American Heritage would not have been the same w/ a different teacher. I learned so much but his tests were hard but fair! I loved this class and actually miss it this semester! Study his lectures. Essays always got me but a lot of ppl do well on them. Everything about this class is interesting and he is very engaging.
Dr. Karpowitz is an amazing teacher. I won't lie, this is a really hard class, but Dr. Karpowitz makes it fun and really wants you to do well. The tests are hard and you really have to study but I did learn a lot in this class.
My favorite professor at BYU so far.
Tremendous experience. Dr. Karpowitz is a great teacher. I wish the class size would have allowed more conversation and questions. He is a wonderful teacher. The TA's are all powerful though. They grade essays, participation, and anything subjective. So choose your TA very wisely.
This professor is not very enthusiastic or exciting. He like to hear himself talk a lot but doens't really get to the main important concepts. He would rather theorize than discuss the actual true facts. I leave his class not really having gained anything at all
Okay, first, AMHTG is hard no matter what professor you take it from, so the main thing is to make sure you get a good TA. During class, when Karpowitz is actually talking, he's a yawner. But, he's really good with using powerpoint, movie clips and music videos to make class interesting. Survivable teacher but not the best.
Professor Karpowitz was the man. Classes were well organized, lectures were useful and the reading was always interesting. Overall this was a great class and I am taking another political science class just because of this class.
Dr. Karpowitz is one of the best professors I have had at BYU. He wants to help you learn, and is very helpful and friendly if you go see him during office hours. I loved his lectures they were the best part of my week as far as classes go. His tests are difficult, but he is more than willing to help you. He likes class discussion so do the reading
The set up of this class is not effective at all. There are two essays and two written exams that make up your grade. These are both graded by TAs that typically offer little to no help. Karpowitz spends a majority of every day on hearing what students think, then is boggled that people do not learn the facts. Take this class from someone else.
Total stud.
I really like the class. I wish i could have taken one of his upper level classes. TAs graded everything, which I guess should be expected in a class this size; but it's hard to trust another student's opinion sometimes.
Extremely helpful, I had several issues throughout the semester and he was more than willing to work with me. He's a funny professor and makes the material interesting, a difficult class but one of the best I have taken at the Y.
Professor Karpowitz was a great teacher that had such a passion for his subject. I don't think his grading system was fair but he was always willing to listen to your concerns regarding essays and such. He cared a lot for his students and wanted you to suceed in his class.
This class wasn't the easiest but I signed up for that when I chose honors. I learned a ton and felt like he really cared about his students doing well. I was concerned about a paper grade and he was willing to grade it again. Tests were hard but fair. Lots of reading but I got by with skipping some of the packet reading. Awesome class!
He is really good. I learned so much from his lectures. He is willing to help students out with any issues they may have. He even takes readings off the reading list when there is too much. American Heritage can be difficult and is a lot of work, but he makes it almost tolerable.
Karpowitz was a great professor. He puts a lot of work into his lectures and has great videos every class. Tests are fair and the curve means you don't even have to do great. There are a lot of readings but he takes them off if it is getting too heavy of a load. He loves talking to students and is a really smart guy use his office hours!
Prof Karpowitz's lectures are occasionally interesting. His tests and essays are pretty difficult (which kind of depends on your TA), but he was good at giving hints about what you needed for the tests. Nice guy, but I wouldn't recommend him for American Heritage.
He is so much fun! He is SO passionate about all he teaches and really tries to make it so his students are too. Definitely the best AmHer teacher at BYU! TAKE IT FROM HIM!!
I believe Dr.Karpowitz and Patterson teach the same lectures. I have Karpowitz and he is pretty good. It all depends on your TA though. I have Maren and she's alright, super hard grader. Just remember that AHTG is a rather hard class no matter who you take it from. READ THE BOOK AND READING FROM SYLLABUS!!
Professor Karpowitz is very passionate about teaching. He makes lecture interesting. He knows his stuff and is funny! Tests are way hard but that's nothing new for AH... study, study, study! I would recommend Karpowitz- he is a really great teacher.
American Heritage is taught as a department and is going to be hard no matter who you take it from. I liked having Professor Karpowitz. I went to his office hours once, and he was very helpful! I wish I would have gone more because he helped a lot, especially because I had a TA that graded hard.
At first, you may be tempted to think his voice is annoying, but he is a great teacher. Have a good attitude, and you will learn a ton! It really depends on if you get a lame TA, you probably will, they are all pretty bad. But overall, a good experience!
I loved this class. Every lecture was great. You definitely have to apply yourself and there is a good amount of reading, but the class isn't too hard. I learned a ton and Karpowitz was always prepared with very good power points.
Lectures were ok sometimes. Several were very funny, but I did not learn a single thing in the whole course. I read every page of both books, which are required to do well on the weekly quizzes, but a huge waste of time in my opinion. TA was Chase Erickson, very annoying to listen to him talk. If you took APUSH DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
The lectures were ok, but as far as learning anything, I felt this was more of a ninth grade review of the constitution and a small review of everything after. Read the book and packet for quizzes. Seemed like most of the time was put into finding pop cultury videos so you would laugh and not realize you werent learning anything. Take PlSc!
He is one of the better American Heritage teachers. I really enjoyed the class. I enjoyed reading the text and course packet, and since that is where most of the time is spent, I liked the class. Lectures were always fun. I had a great TA, so labs were fun. Your TA grades your papers and helps you study, so they really determine your grade.
The professor did a great job at making the class interesting. I wasn't looking forward to the class, but it turned out to be pretty interesting. I learned more than I thought I would. I now care about government.
Well. Lectures were useless, I ignored them after the first midterm. I also didn't do any of the readings. One line summaries of the readings were enough to do really good on the exams, when the questions were clear enough to be answerable. summary: Lectures/readings really don't help, and the readings are excessively boring.
The lectures were interesting but honestly I didn't learn a lot of new stuff. There is a ton of reading, both from the textbook and packets, and several essays. The tests were quite hard, there was more application than straight memorization. I think professor wise, the course is the same across regardless of the professor.
I liked Professor Karpowitz a lot. Lecture was always interesting and labs were usually fun- but I had a good TA. Your TA can make or break the experience. The tests are tough. They're going to take some pretty good studying. You'll have a lot of resources if you need help though. I learned a lot in this class.
Karpowitz better than Patterson, I went to both teacher's lectures. Karpowitz very funny, helpful. The class is VERY hard, but it is curved so most kids do fine. Study the packet readings REALLY well, they are easy points. Ammendments are also EASY EASY points if you know them on test 2. I would recommend Karpowitz for AHTG
Your experience in this class will depend on your TA. Mine was awful, and I hated the class. I don't feel that I learned anything new. If you've taken APGOV or APUSH, be prepared for a semester of review. Karpowitz is a good guy, he's super nice if you ever need to talk with him during office hours. Do the readings and use the games on the website.
If you are good at writing this class isn't as difficult as people say. Use your TA's office hours for the essays because they won't tell you what they want in the paper unless you physically go in and ask them. There is a TON of reading, ask the TA's to summarize reading packets at the review sessions. AmHert is hard but do-able.
this class has a heavy load no matter what. however the top 20% of students get an A so if everyone thinks its hard, which they do, then you can still get the A. his lectures are clear and stimulating. aht isnt a great class no matter what, would recomend him, he really cares about his students
AHTG is hard no matter who your professor is. Essays are dependent mostly on your TA. TA's aren't helpful at all when writing papers and they'll mark you down for things they told you to do in your paper. You hardly need the book...just do the assigned article readings for labs and study his powerpoint lectures for tests and you'll be fine.
The class is very difficult--anyone can tell you that. Professor Karpowitz was very helpful and I found lecture very interesting. The hardest parts were the exams and the essays, but a nice curve on the overall grade is a huge plus.
I don't know if the teacher stinks or this class just stinks. His lectures were very entertaining and you felt like you understood but the tests had nothing to do with the lectures. Maybe I didn't read my textbook enough.
Lets face it: This class sucks. No matter what. It is very difficult and requires tons of work and reading. However, Dr. Karpowitz always had interesting lectures and as long as you do all of the reading and went to lecture and lab you'll be fine. Use the TAs! They are a huge help!
This class depends on how much you keep up with the homework. He's such a great professor with modern day application. Loved his lectures. If you keep up with the reading, take your time on the essays and study for the tests, you'll be fine. Relatively easy class and my favourite class of the semester.
well its the most dreaded class at BYU...make sure that you get a good TA (I dont have a great one). try to keep up with the reading even though most dont and take the quizzes and listen. It is hard but it can be done
You have to be arbitrarily minded to do well in this class. Stay pretty current with the billions of readings, and you'll do good.
This. Class. Is. Difficult. Unless you like this subject, that is. I don't. But, I think Karpowitz did a really good job of teaching it, and is just funny about it. TAs will really be who decides your grade on this. I got a good TA, so I got lucky. Just make sure you tell them about any difficulties you have.
Lots and lots of reading. Tragically, it's really pretty necessary. If you get a good TA, it can be helpful, but at the same time, it's sort of a lifeboat situation - only so many make it onto the 'A' boat, and so on down the list - with respect to TA. An 'A' is therefore attainable, but difficult, sometimes.
This class can be brutal, and there's not really any way to get around it. There is a lot of reading required and even then, you need to study a lot to do well on the tests but Karpowitz does a fair job at describing the subject.
The Karp man is cool
Karpowitz is a fantastic professor! He is funny and always keeps class interesting. You will do well in this class if you do what they tell you to do. Just do the readings, go to lecture and lab, and study. I loved this class!
Yes, there is a metric boatload of reading. Karpowitz keeps it interesting with his videos, but the fact is the class is HARD. You NEED to read and study EVERYTHING they tell you to do, the amount of material covered is massive, and it will ALL be on the test. But you have to take this class sometime, and Karpowitz did nothing but help.
This class is huge, so a lot depends on your TA. But lectures are highly entertaining and his powerpoint slides are very clear. I didn't feel like I really needed to paraphrase when I took notes. A very nice guy who makes himself available for a huge amount of students.
Too much reading. The basic equation you could figure was that there would be exactly one problem on the test per every reading (though sometimes more with the more prolific pieces we read). So if you want to skip a reading you'd better figure that you'll lose a few points on the test for that reading, guaranteed.
A lot depends on your TA. Lectures are very fun and his powerpoint slides are very clear. He posts them all online as well. A nice guy who genuinely cares and makes time for any student.
I really didn't like history before taking this class but now I have a new appreciation for it. Karpowitz has interesting & fast paced lectures with good humor. His choice of videos is great & the powerpoints are a good summary. Make sure to take notes!! Tests are tough - keep up with the reading assignments [seriously]. Listen in lecture & lab!
Professor Karpowitz had really entertaining lectures. Half of the time I found myself cracking up in them. The tests and papers were difficult but its American Heritage, what do you expect. Overall he made a difficult class enjoyable and I feel that I e=learned a lot what more can you ask for?
I thought this class was super easy. The only difficult part were the essays and what TA you got. If you go to class and pay attention, and study I really don't see why you'd get a bad grade. I do like history though...
He was a phenomenal professor!! I loved going to lecture! He made it fun and relatable and did a great job of presenting ideas clearly. And he was very considerate anytime I emailed him with concerns. Take American Heritage from him if you can!!
I'm not too into Politics, never have been, but Karpowitz provided very interesting lectures that are consistent with the reading. Open book quizzes 2x a week, 2 papers and 2 tests. The class is pretty easy to do well in if you try. Both Karpowitz and the TA's will help you on anything you need! I'd recommend(:
Professor Karpowitz is not a clear teacher. Grading varied widely. There are no study guides and the TAs will not be helpful in directing you towards what material to focus on. Overall, the class focuses on a HUGE spectrum (50-75 pages of reading per class) but tests are all about arbitrary knowledge. I have no desire to follow politics anymore.
Readings were much too long - making reading quizzes a LONG trivia game. Test expectations were this: Know everything, and we will not give a study guide. Essay expectations were inconsistent with grading. Too much work for the grade. Asked my TA to help me review my essay and he totally blew me off. Take American Heritage.
Do you like covering an enormous amount of material and trying to remember tiny facts about things you've probably never heard of? Would you then like to take a midterm that asks you to write the equivalent of a 12 page double spaced paper on said obscure facts and details without any notes? No? Then take this class from someone else.
He is an interesting lecturer, easy to follow. Very passionate about the subject, wants his students to do well. The class has a lot of reading, up to 75 pages per class. Online quizes before class that are open book. The grading on the papers and mid-term was very harsh. No study guides, you're supposed to know everything ever read or said.
Covered a HUGE amount of material without study guides. "Everything is fair game" he said. TAs told us they did not look at final, and therefore did not know what would be on it. Grading was very harsh and completely ridiculous at times. Two words to sum up this class's grading and instructing procedures: arbitrary and ambiguous.
His lectures definitely aren't super boring, and the subject is fairly interesting. But the grading is super harsh. TAs judged papers super hard, and EVERYTHING ever covered in lecture or in the books are "fair game" for midterms and finals. Pulled several all-nighters trying to study for tests. Not impossible if you do all the work, but not easy.
Karpowitz is a great teacher, but I thought the class demanded a lot and I put in a lot of work but it was difficult to do well in his class. He is a good guy, but I would never take his class again. TAs were not very helpful either.
Professor Karpowitz is one of the most intelligent men you well ever have the privilege of being taught by. If you took a government class in high school one of the textbooks only needs to be skimmed, and for the other readings you only need to know the author and the main points. Tests aren't bad if you know what you've read. Great class.
American Heritage is a hard class. Do everything he says and more.
Your TA is really the make-or-break it for your grade. They will grade all assignments except the tests, so it's worth it to go meet with them before turning in an essay. Hope you get a good TA. Dr. Karpowitz made lectures as interesting as possible! Tests are a combination of lecture, labs, and reading- so you need to attend everything.
Professor Karpowitz is a great guy. American Heritage is a hard class, but he makes lecture interesting. Your grade totally depends on your TA
Attend lectures and labs. Utilize the Review Room. Take a look at the essay prompts and start gathering ideas BEFORE they remind you that it is due. Also, study everything! Don't question it, just do it. The better you do early on, the less you'll stress later.
Good considering it is a huge lecture hall class, and you only interact with the TA's. A very abstract concept, where there isn't a lot of concrete information to learn.
Oh wow. American Heritage is known for being a terrible class, but I loved it!! Lectures are always upbeat and even though it's a big class size, there are so many chances to give your opinion. Honestly made me a more informed citizen and definitely broadend my view of America.
This class is a really fun one to take but it is also extremely difficult. The lectures are upbeat and interesting. The textbook however is very dull and hard to get through and there are often a ton of readings due. The grading system is very difficult. The essays are graded harshly but that may just be my TA. Karpowitz is a fun professor but hard
Karpowitz himself is a good lecturer and class isn't bad, it's just the course structure itself that makes it difficult to do well despite having learned a lot. Many students take it so they intentionally make it hard to get an A. Your TA also matters because they grade your essays, which are a terrible chore. I learned a lot but an A is tricky
His lectures are entertaining but the class itself is the hardest class I've taken.
I had had Prof Karpowitz before, but I grew to appreciate him even more after this class. He repeatedly proved to be a very smart man. I will say that in our small class of 12, we were expected to speak up and participate often. That was very difficult for me. However, even if you say something stupid, he'll be completely respectful to you.
This class was a beast. For being a required course, the tests are insanely hard with ridiculous questions like "which article of the constitution is the longest?" Karpowitz gives entertaining lectures but get ready to study and study hard for the tests. Average test grade for the second midterm for my section was a 67%, and they don't curve.
Tests are super specific and tricky. Some nights I had to read 50 pages in the textbook and then 30 pages online and a chapter from the book. Insane.
This class was pretty good for an American Heritage class. Lectures were entertaining, but tests aren't the easiest.
It's college, so prepare yourself to do the homework and to go beyond so that you're prepared to do well on tests. That's pretty much why you see all the negative reviews. I thought this was a great class, Professor Karpowitz really cares about what he's talking about and he wants to see students succeed. Homework and studying are important.
I really enjoyed having Professor Karpowitz for American Heritage. I thought his lectures were great, the content was super interesting, and I by no means am a history person. Overall great professor.
This is a class that's difficult for pretty much everyone who takes it. Definitely an experience. Only 2 tests (besides the final) and they are very difficult. TA review are not helpful because the TA's don't get to see the tests. 6 essays and lots of reading.
Professor Karpowitz is a wonderful professor and you will learn a lot from him. You will not struggle because of him. If you take American Heritage, it's the TAs that will control your grade, and the luck of the draw is what will basically determine your success in this class. Too many people in this class for the amount of staff.
Great teacher, really knows how to get the material to stick in your memory, especially using things like karaoke, food, and awesome videos. The class itself is VERY difficult. DO NOT GET BEHIND ON READING! Use the open lab, especially for help on the essays. You learn a lot, but if you're looking for an easy A, this isn't the place.
Dr. Karpowitz is a GREAT professor. It's crazy how Freshmen at BYU fear American Heritage so much, but it really wasn't that hard to get an A in. Just show up to class, DO THE READING, and enjoy the lectures- they are awesome and the video clips are hilarious!
Dr. Karpowtiz has been one of the best professors I have had a BYU this far. He really wants all of his students to succeed and will make every effort he can to help you. He saved my grade this semester and I wouldn't have passed if it weren't for his understanding as a professor. He understands that not every students is the same.
Karpowitz is really funny and very passionate about the class and it translates to his teaching. The class is hard, but certainly doable if you put the work in. Overall a great class with good subject matter that didn't just focus on one point of view.
I personally loved the class. We discussed several deep principles to our country and the morals of it all. If you do the course readings and TAKE NOTES for the readings AND the lecture, you'll get an A. If you don't, good luck.
He is a pretty funny guy, knows what he is talking about and explains things well. It is a tough class but if you keep up with the readings and pay attention and take notes you'll be fine. Great guy though.
Professor Karpowitz is a great teacher. He really knows his stuff! He also does a really good job getting the whole class involved- even if you're in a lecture hall of 250 people.
Brother Karpowitz is an amazing man. He knows what he teaches and conveys the information in a very clear, easy to understand, meaningful way. He cares about his students and gives them plenty of opportunities to participate in lecture. Labs are not fun and depend on who your TA is. He sets up the class in a very fair way. No complaints about him!
I actually really loved the course. It is not as bad as everyone made it out to be! He is one of the most passionate professors at BYU and I really loved his lectures. But you need to listen because everything he says in lecture could be on his tests, which were tough. If you work hard you'll get an A/B with the curve.
I didn't particularly like the way he taught/talked, and I had a hard time paying attention in lecture. He uploads all the powerpoints and doesn't add much- but there are attendance quizzes almost daily. Basically, this class isn't as awful as you've heard- IF you get a good TA. Karpowitz is all about concepts, the TAs go more in depth.
Gives awesome lectures, but in no way did lecture ever prepare us for those awful exams. Overall I was very disattisfied with this class, and if you never took AP US History in high school then you are at a major disadvantage seeing as your grade is relative to how well everyone else does. Go to the review room EVERY DAY for 15 minutes to review!
The only real complaint I had with this class was that the tests were very detailed, especially about the readings. Other than that, the lectures were usually at least somewhat interesting and the essays weren't bad as long as you write to the rubric. Hope for a good TA; if not, take advantage of the review room.
Professor Karpowitz is good and funny, although it all really depends on your TA. They do all the grading. iClicker quizzes are used to track your attendance. 6 essays, 2 midterms. Class can be sometimes fun, sometimes boring. There's a lot of reading for this class, and to do well you need to read it all, go to lecture/lab, and attend TA reveiws .
American Heritage can be a challenging class. But Karpowitz is a fantastic professor. I genuinely enjoyed his lectures and style and honestly this class is not as horrible as everyone makes it sound. A lot depends on your TA, so its chance I guess, but I did good on the essays and well enough on the medium-to-hard tests. Study, you'll be fine.
Loved the lectures! He is an amazing teacher, and really knows his stuff. DO NOT FALL BEHIND. I feel like I hiccuped near the beginning, and I never caught back up, hurting my grade. Always do all of the reading, though, and you will do great. He and the TAs are a huge help. You won't regret taking his class.
Maybe it was just the course, but taking American Heritage from him was awful. He expects you to have background in history and political science, when it's a general course. Naturally he can't get to know the students very well, and he doesn't care how well you do in his class. I'm sure he's a nice guy, but this class was an awful experience.
I don't know why everyone has a hard time in this class. If you show up, do the work, and study a little, you'll do great. Mostly the tests are on course concepts, not on facts, and the terms are mostly self-explanatory. The papers are annoying but doable. He tries to be funny and cool. I wasn't into his humor but at least I stayed awake.
This was a tough course. It's fairly interesting, but it's a lot of work. The professor teaches fairly clearly and is moderately helpful, but it's not easy. Go to class and review sessions; you'll need them.
I really enjoyed Dr. Karpowitz's lectures, but they seemed like a different class from the TA lab, I could never seem to guess what he was looking for on the essays, and the tests seemed super nit picky and disconnected from the rest of the class. Probably the nature of the beast, but I didn't see any reason for this class to be so difficult.
American Heritage was the bane of my existence. But it isn't for everyone, so I guess it just isn't my thing. Regardless, it is hard to get an A in this class. Tests are entirely conceptual, so even if you think you understand it you can fail. If you're a ok writer you will get 17 or 18/20 on the papers no matter how much time you put into them.
Prof. Karpowitz is an incredible professor. I felt the Spirit more often in his class than I have in any religion class at BYU. He's passionate about the subject and it is contagious. Obviously AmHer is a difficult course regardless of the professor. One simply needs to keep up with the reading and use the TAs as much as possible. Highly recommend.
Tough readings and quizzes.
I really love this class! He makes history/politics interesting. Not much writing; four 500 word essays in the semester. He is hilarious and his lectures are really helpful. Quite a bit of reading, but if you do it and really pay attention it's not bad to handle.
Everyone has heard that American Heritage is one of the toughest course at BYU, but it is very similar to AP history courses in high school. Prof Karpowitz makes his lectures pretty entertaining with little activities, and he knows the material very well and presents in a way that is easily understandable. Just take notes and do the readings.
American Heritage was a great class. Dr. Karpowitz is very passionate about what he teaches and it shows. He makes concepts interesting and easy to understand. There's a lot of reading (a LOT), and you definitely have to put a lot of work in, but it's all worth it.
They will tell you that you can get an A in this class which is true, if this is the only class you take: The readings take a copious number of hours per week. The essays are impossible to do all the things they ask for in (strictly) 500 words. The exams are unnecessarily difficult, and the lectures discourage participation in exchange 4 dull labs.
You HAVE to do the reading. The tests are like 80% reading concept application. The TA reviews SAVE LIVES. GO TO THE REVIEWS. The final can replace both of your midterms if you do better, but DON'T GET LAZY. There is a LOT of material on the final. This class gave me a better political knowledge. I enjoyed this class more than I thought I would.
Contrary to popular opinion, I LOVED American Heritage. I think it is a great class that all colleges should require. Professor Karpowitz was awesome too! His lectures were so fun, thoughtful, and inspirational! Yeah tests are hard, but we're at college so... duh. Everything else was easy.
Contrary to popular belief, I actually enjoyed this class immensely. Yes, it's hard. And yes, you have to work to get a good grade, but the material we discussed was very interesting. Dr. Karpowitz is an engaging lecturer. Do the readings, go to lecture and labs, take notes, and study and you will be fine!
I loved this class. It was a lot easier than I expected! If you are consistent about attending lecture and lab, you'll be fine. Get help from the TA lab and figure out what helps you be successful on the tests, because that's what will change your grade. By the way, if you have a background in US history you probably don't need to buy the textbook.
Professor Karpowitz has been my favorite professor so far at BYU. His lectures are fun and engaging, and he is passionate about the subject. I highly recommend taking American Heritage from him. The most important hing in the class is to do the readings, and don't get behind! That is what killed me, and I only barely got caught up at the end.
LOVE!!! this class. Very in depth analysis about American Heritage and how that affects us today and into the future. Dr. Karpowitz is amazing and gives great lectures. That being said, it is not an easy class. Expect A LOT of reading outside of class and if you don't read it then don't expect to do well on the exams and in the class
Prof Karpowitz is a great professor, but it was a harder class. I was taking a large load of classes and if I had more time to put into this class, I would've done better. It was challenging, but not that bad. Prof Karpowitz really cares about his students and does his best to make the lectures really interesting and to involve his students.
TAKE KARPOWITZ. Yes, American Heritage isn't easy, but you might as well enjoy lectures. Dr. Karpowitz is thee best professor I have ever had. He is super engaging, extremely passionate about what he teaches, and his students, and is incredibly smart. He literally brought me to tears his last lecture. TAKE HIM.
Cried on the last day of class. Seriously the best professor and best class.
Karpowitz gave really great lectures. I would definitely recommend his class. As always American Heritage is a bit difficult and requires work, but he at least keeps you engaged in lecture.
I really loved this class! It is definitely a hard class, but it's doable. ALWAYS GO TO CLASS, DO THE READINGS, TAKE THE QUIZZES, and please, for the love of pete, GO TO THE REVIEW ROOM!
Unpopular opinion: I loved American Heritage. I think it's a great class. Yeah the tests are hard but we're at college so... Professor Karpowitz was fun. His lectures were entertaining and informative and I will definitely take classes from in the future, given the chance. Oh and my C+ there was 100% my own fault. (I need to be more dedicated)
American Heritage was a hard class, but I loved it! Your professor doesn't really matter because they prepare the same lecture, but I loved Prof. Karpowitz. He was caring and funny and I seriously learned SO MUCH. That said, you can't pass without working and doing the readings. There's weekly quizzes and I found the tests to be challenging. Study!
People always told me how impossible this class was, but it isn't even that bad. Professor Karpowitz makes lectures fun and totally worth it. Go to class, always do the quizzes, and go to the TA labs. American Heritage isn't that bad.
As far as the material goes, it can be learned but seriously, we are talking about a 100 level class here. It is assumed that it not supposed to be harder than the 300 level course I was taking concurrently. The tests are unnecessarily hard and if you don't read every last thing they give you, there is sure to be some obscure test question on it.
Such a captivating professor! Honestly one of my favorite classes I have ever taken!
Professor Karpowitz is incredible! The lectures are REALLY entertaining and helpful. I got a B with out trying too hard, I would have gotten an A had I done all of the reading. This class isn't nearly as bad as everyone makes it sound! Plus, he really wants you to succeed and cares about his students!
I honestly enjoyed American Heritage. Prof. Karpowitz does his best to make lectures interesting. There is a lot of reading, and you NEED to do it, but the tests are very fair and the TA reviews are helpful -- plus they're only 15 mins. every day. I honestly didn't think the tests were hard, and it's not difficult to do well if you work hard.
I actually LOVED American Heritage. It is a super hard class for a GE, and it kicked my butt, but I ended up doing really well (it is possible!) If you put in the work, this class will change your entire life for the better, as it did mine!!! TOTALLY worth it. Karpowitz is fantastic, very engaging and loves what he teaches. Highly recommend.
At first I thought American Heritage was going to be easy and I felt like I understood everything. That changed really fast after I took the first test! You definitely need to keep up on the homework and attend the lectures in order to pass. Karpowitz was a great professor! Really funny and the lectures kept my attention the whole time!
Amer Heritage is a hard class no matter what professor, but Karpowitz definitely helped make it easier. His lectures are funny, & when I took it he was working closely with Patterson another prof for this class, so both classes were on the same track. Study hard, go to the lab, go to class, be on top of assignments, and just be ready to work.
I took this course as a 2nd block class, and Karpowitz was awesome. He really cares about his students and is not afraid to adjust the course schedule to accommodate students. I learned so much about the presidency in a short period of time; he really knows his stuff and makes lectures engaging with current events. Great guy, take a class from him!
I hated this class. Karpowitz is a nice guy but American Heritage had almost nothing to do with American Heritage. We argued about politics and other pointless political things. The teacher is okay but the content in the class in bad. Some of the tests have extremely hard application questions and you pretty much just have to guess the answer.
Dr. Karpowitz is awesome! I loved the class! He sets clear expectations. There is so much reading. SO MUCH READING. But it's great. Everything you do is for a reason. There's no busy work. He's super nice, super easy to talk to, and super willing to meet with students. Honestly, one of my favorite professors.
This class was very enjoyable. He taught politics in a non-contentious way and this was during the Trump/Clinton election. Class sizes are 500+ so he relies heavily on the TAs this is unfortunate but the professor is not to blame for this.
Dr. Karpowitz is a great teacher. You can tell he enjoys his job and somehow engaged a giant lecture hall of students! I loved going to lecture and I learned so much. That being said, this class is TOUGH. I aced all the papers, but scored between 81-87 on all of the tests which was discouraging considering I lived and breathed the review room.
I would die for Dr. Karpowitz. His class is amazing- a lot of reading, but its interesting reading that enables the class to have very interesting and exciting discussions. This class reminded me why I decided to be a poli sci major! Karpowitz cares about his students and loves to see you progress., I would take a bullet for him, seriously.
Professor Karpowitz is a good teacher, but the class was hard. The lectures were interesting and informative, but the tests were unnecessarily hard and the papers were graded harshly. All the tests were comprehensive, and the final was comprehensive and cumulative. Also, no study guides were given. Overall, interesting but very hard class.
I'm so glad that I took Karpowitz for American Heritage. It was a challenging class but he taught so well and I loved it so much. I'm kind of a history buff though, so beware. It's not an easy class but he teaches well and is very entertaining. Get to know your TA to do well on the papers and tests.
he's a really entertaining and nice guy. The class is pretty rough though. It is hard for sure and you need to study lots of exams. Tests are worth 70% of your grade... However, there is second chance grading so that's really nice!
Lobved him as a proffesor! His class is hard, but if you put time to actually do the readings and takes notes this will class shuold be no problem for you.
I think it's just the course in general, but it seems like it's just American History, but vague in order to make it harder. He works with Patterson to make the tests and a lot of them are "guess the professor's interpretation" questions. Multiple hours of readings after each class. I did poorly and I still don't know how to improve.
Proffesor Karpowitz is a funny guy and definitely knows how to make AHTG100 interesting to students who don't care for it, like myself. Note: If you do better on the final exam than both or 1 of the midterm he REPLACES your score! Also an 1/3 essay scores are dropped and 2 quizzes are droppeed. You can succeed in his class.
He's a great teacher and lectures are never boring. Bad news: there's lots of reading, and three (maybe four) required textbooks. There are quizzes every week and 3 papers a semester. Good news: Second chance grading makes me happy. In this class, the quality of your TA is as important as your prof. Your TA grades everything. Attend all labs.
SO MUCH READING! This class is really hard with a TON of boring reading. The tests are definitely really hard as well. However, regardless of the difficulty of the class, professor Karpowitz is a really funny guy who is very passionate during his lectures. The TAs for this class are all amazing. Definitely go to the labs and review room.
American heritage is a beast class, but I really enjoyed his lectures. Tons of readings and tons of papers but he is a fun lecture to attend and if you study throughout the semester and focus on the ideas of what he is teaching over the facts and evidence then you will really do great in the class. As great as american heritage can be.
Totally reminds me of Gru from Despicable Me. The way he walks around the lecture hall hunched a little with his hands behind his back. Somewhat funny, covers the material well. Often I don't worry about finishing ALL the reading before the weekly quiz if I took sufficient notes during his lectures.
This class was unnecessarily hard for a general. There is a lot of reading and my TA really did not help me at all. As a PDBIO major, it was hard to keep up my grades in bio and still have to worry about this class affecting my GPA. I really did not enjoy this class at all and would not recommend it.
With pretty much any American Heritage class, you know you're going to have to work hard. There's lots of reading and pretty much nobody likes it, but as far as teachers go, Prof. Karpowitz is pretty good. He does lecture a lot, but I personally found it pretty interesting, and he's pretty funny sometimes.
I absolutely love Prof. Karpowitz, I think he is the best. However, American Heritage is such a difficult course, so make sure to do the (many) readings. Take notes in lecture, and really hone in on what he is emphasizing about topics. Tests are very specific, so know the readings and topics! You have to work hard to do well in this class.
Prof. Karpowitz is wonderful, & made this class tolerable. That being said, American Heritage is incredibly difficult. The tests were unnecessarily hard and indepth, so know your people & readings! I felt like I learned a lot & went the extra mile, but it didn't show. It helps to have a good TA (I did not). TIPS: Know how topics & ideas connect
I loved Dr. Karpowitz! The class he teaches is difficult because the requirements are set by the university, as well as the readings by the department. Most readings could be done in half an hour and the longest took an hour. He's very passionate about what he teaches and, even though it's a large class, you can tell he cares about his students!
Such a good class and professor! Professor Karpowitz was so funny and really cares about his students. The lectures were amazing, and did a good job of presenting material with many different sides. Lots of reading, but most of it was interesting. This class gets a bad rep, but it's actually so good, especially from this professor!
I LOVED THIS CLASS WITH PROFESSOR KARPOWITZ!! 10/10 recommend taking American Heritage from him. This class is very difficult and requires lots of work but he is so worth it! His lectures are so fun and engaging!
Taking Am HTG as a freshman was probably the worst decision of my life. BUT, he made coming to class so fun. Although I hate the course, I loved the class. He was always making us laugh: wearing a wig for hippies, bringing in the cheerleaders, selling us donuts, and letting us say things like "ok boomer" for attendance. Take this class with him!!!!
Doctor Karpowitz is one of the best teachers I have ever had. He not only is qualified but he loves what he teaches. I was not a fan of history until this class. He made me passionate about America in ways I didn't think possible. It was a difficult class but Doctor Karpowitz will help you, especially as you put in the work.
I really enjoyed Dr. Karpowitz and he does care about his students. This is a hard class and you should be expecting it. The reading is heavy, the tests are conceptual, and the weekly quizzes can be hard. However, a good grade is absolutely attainable. You just need to do the homework and work hard.
American Heritage is always going to be hard. Prof. Karpowitz is a really funny guy though. I started liking the class more as it went along. You could tell he really cared about us doing well in class and learning things. I did pretty well on exams, but that was mostly because I got added to a google doc with all the readings highlights.
American Heritage is just one of those hard classes, but Professor Karpowitz makes it more interesting. I didn't talk to him once all semester, but your TA will make or break the class for you. Also, his second chance testing policy was very generous!
Dr. Karpowitz was amazing! I normally don't do as well in my history classes. However his lectures where entertaining and memorable, making it easier for me to remember the material. 100% would recommend taking this class. There is a lot of reading in this class and it is extremely important that you do it. Over all an awesome class.
Karpowitz was such a good person to take American Heritage from. He was engaging, pretty clear and made it so that lecture went pretty fast! Use the review room, do the reading, take lecture notes, and you'll be fine. This class takes work, but Karpowitz makes it so you don't have to work hard to enjoy it at least a little.
Dr. Karpowitz is a great lecturer with very clear expectations. Do the readings! They may seem like a lot, but they will help you on the weekly quizzes as well as the exams.
First off American Heritage is the worst class ever and that will always be that way no matter what. However prof. karpowitz does a pretty good job of making it tolerable even though it is still super difficult. The few papers you have to write are graded harshly but this depends mostly on your T.A. But this class has awful T.A.s that arent helpful
For not being a history buff, Karpowitz did a great job making me fall in love with history. His class was entertaining and very interesting. People complain about the class because there are a lot of readings and the tests are difficult, but manage your time wisely and you can handle this class fine. Take this class from Karpowitz, he is the best!
I absolutely loved American Heritage with Prof. Karpowitz! His lectures were one of my favorites and I loved the class overall. Do your readings and take good notes and you'll do fine!
Professor Karpowitz gives great lectures that enjoyed even though I found the course material insanely boring. The TA's do all the grading though, so you want to make sure you get a good TA.
There is assigned a massive amount of reading but I honestly didn't do any of the reading. Just pay atttention to what the professor emphasizes in lecture and know the jist of the readings. Karpowitz really cares about his students too and was a great professor.
I loved Professor Karpowitz! He always made lectures incredibly entertaining and I could see how much passion he had towards American Heritage and he did his best to help us learn of its importance. The structure of this course, however, I feel was too reading heavy with ridiculously hard tests. Nothing against Karpowitz at all, just the class.
American Heritage is no joke, dont think people are exaggerating before you take it. But he makes this class so interesting, and well worth it. A funny guy, and cares about everyone so much. Loved him, but it was a hard class. If youre looking for someone to make an awful class a little better, take it from him. I would highly recommend.
Professor Karpowitz made AHTG100 a blast. It was my "stress class" that semester but I never dreaded going to a lecture. He knows an incredible amount and has really cohesive lectures. His class is where I learned to take notes and write succinctly. Stay on top of reading, and you're golden. If you have a hard time in AHTG100, it's not his fault!
Poli Sci major here who has routinely gotten As in poli sci 300/400 classes etc. I didn't see what the hype was about. Of the 15+ poli sci teachers I've had, Karpowitz was definitely the worst of them all. Awful test grader and class was always a drag. Nice guy, but not my kinda professor.
TAKE THIS ONLINE IF YOU CAN!!! Its so good, class is like an NFL talk-show. The readings suck, but if you use Sparknotes and go to the TA sessions you'll be fine. I heard horror stories about AHTG, but this class was fine! The lectures are so good my sister from another school would watch them with me. Seriously so funny.
This is a very tough class. There are weekly quizzes, 2 exams, 2-3 essays, and a final. The lectures were fun and engaging. I think I would like this class a lot more if the tests weren't so hard.
He's a super good professor and it's an interesting class-- but you do have to put in some work for a good grade. There's a quiz over readings each week, 2 midterms, 2 papers, and a final; but the lectures are interesting and I definitely can tell I learned from this class
if you don't take this class, you are missing out on so much! highly recommend, it really is a super valuable class and experience. Amazing TAs, great professors, just get ready to read a lot. but don't be scared away by the readings cuz it's a class you'll never forget (for bad or for good :))
Karpowitz and Patterson taught together for online. They make for an entertaining duo and are probably the highlight of the class. Attendance to lectures counts, and participation is very important in labs. Lots of reading, but manageable. Lots of reading and thinking about American ideas and stuff. Not my favorite, but overall a good class.
I absolutely loved Professor Karpowitz and this class. You can tell how much he cares about each student and their success. I have not met a student that does not adore him. He is very concise in his lectures and gives you everything you will need to know for tests. This class left me wanting more. It was so fun to listen to.
He knows this is a hard class, but really makes it come to life and makes it applicable to real-life! Make sure you spend extra time knowing the readings and authors' views inside and out and you will do great--but there are A LOT of readings! His second-chance grading policy is generous
Karpowitz cares a ton about what he teaches and his students. The lectures are incredible, and it is easy to tell that he puts in so much effort to make it enjoyable for his students. The class was not nearly as hard as everyone had told me it would be. I would definitely take another class from him.
Professor Karpowitz is a really good teacher, and definitely knows his stuff. But be aware that you will have to spend at least an hour before each lecture reading. The tests are very difficult so be ready to be tricked. It's important to pay attention during lecture and do all the reading to have a chance at success.
This class is just a study group for american heritage. Don't take it. Please. It was a huge waste of time and just added to the stress of american heritage.
This class was amazing! There is a lot of textbook readings, so get ready for that, but if you stay on top of things it should not be too bad. The professors really want to help you develop your own understanding of the country and its origins, so this is a useful class to helping you figure out your own beliefs about politics.
I've never rated a professor before but feel the need to warn people about professor Karpowitz. He doesn't help his students, has a heavy political bias, and his tests are a joke. No amount of studying can prepare you. One of those BYU professors that enjoys giving bad grades. Don't take from him if you can avoid it!
This is just a study group class for American Heritage. As mentioned before, it's mainly a waste of time and doesn't enhance or improve American Heritage experience at all.
LEGEND OF KANSAS. LOVES MEMES. Taking ahtg with PATTERWITZ was legendary and we almost all love them. Do the readings (minus city upon a hill if you dont feel like it. They cover it in lecture enough) especially APT, Justice, and CR. Attend Review rooms(put on headphones as you walk around/clean) especially exam reviews + youll blow them away
The class I took was taught jointly between Dr. Karpowitz and Dr. Patterson. Dr. Karpowitz made the lectures really interested and did a great job explaining the concepts. The attendance was mandatory and attending lectures and doings the readings was required but super helpful and most of the time pretty interesting.
Oh boy. This class in general is just so hard. Karpowitz and Patterson did a great job with the lectures and made them so enjoyable. However there is a lottt of reading and the tests are very difficult so be sure to go to as many review sessions as you can. Take good notes, and be prepared for tests that grade more on application of the principles
I took Am Her during covid, so it was an online lecture taught by Prof. Karpiwitz and Prof Patterson. They were both good professors, but if you have to choose between the two, go with Prof. Karpowitz, he was awesome! Class content and lectures were fantastic. Keep up on the reading, you need all the books; work with your TA if you need any help.
I took this during Covid, so the class was jointly taught by Dr. Karpowitz and Dr. Patterson. The lectures were top notch. The teachers and the T.A's care, reach out to them. Attend labs and ask questions. Review sessions are so helpful. If you need help reach out to the T.A's/ Professors. Second-chance grading was a great gift. He cares!
Took this class as a team-taught course by Patterson and Karpowitz and I ended up really enjoying the class - it's nowhere near as a bad as rumors would have you believe. My best advice: write a summary of each reading right after reading it because main ideas of the text are heavily tested on. Also, go to the TA test review sessions!
In COVID times, lectures can be a snooze, but Karpowitz and Patterson's team teaching live lectures were always the highlight of my day. They work hard to explain the material in a clear way. This is a reading heavy class, but if you stay up to date with the readings and make sure to ask questions in the review room, you'll be all set for the exams
Liked the way the Lectures were structured like TedTalks, so at least I wasn't asleep during lecture. Fun professors and class, the course work is difficult, you need the readings to survive and it's mainly graded based on test scores rather than papers, attendance, etc.
Get ready for non-stop reading material, tests with questions worded so vaguely as to trip you up, and very little guidance throughout the class as they refuse to provide study guides so that you know what material to prioritize. You'll be lucky to get a B in their class.
Drs. Karpowitz and Patterson are great guys, but when people say this class is insanely hard, they aren't lying. The content itself is not difficult but the exams are extremely difficult, and I felt that many questions were trying to trick me rather than test my knowledge. You can study hard, do the readings, and still bomb the exams. Good luck!
Yes, there are a lot of things to read but you are perfectly fine as long as you focus on the main ideas!! I took US Gov & Politics in high school and American Heritage was wayyyy easier than my high school class. Go to the review rooms, focus on the main ideas, review them, and you will be fine.
This class was one of my favorites, especially with the TV Show style lectures. It is a VERY hard class, but you get what you put in. You MUST do all the reading, which are a lot, take notes, and I went to the review room literally everyday. Reach out to TA with any questions. If you put the effort, you'll do great!
Lots of required reading. Hard tests. Required attendance for the online lectures. This class is pretty difficult for being a mostly freshman class. You have more contact with your lab TA than the professors. No amount of studying will prepare you for the exams. I wish I took ECON 110 instead. Good luck.
I really enjoyed his lectures. This class is very challenging though. There are a lot of readings and it's very easy to get behind. There's no study guide so it can be difficult to prepare for the exams. The exams are also tough but he uses second chance grading which is very helpful.
I really liked coming to class. Lectures were engaging. Slides were easy to follow and provided them outside of class to study. However, be prepared to take notes because the lecture builds on the slides and not everything is on there.
AH is crazy hard. I was really upset with how impossible it felt. The tests are worth 70% of our grade, no study guides are provided. This is a freshman class and honestly the professors need to chill. I know the information because I studied really hard, and still did poorly. It is the most frustrating classes I have ever taken. unbelievable.
Super entertaining lectures, but a very difficult class. The class exams are very difficult, and memorization heavy. Just one of the harder general classes at byu. Be prepared to read, memorize everything on the slides, and really understand all of the reading if you want a good grade.
Dr. Karpowitz is AMAZING! I really struggled with the content at the beginning of Political Psychology, and Dr. Karpowitz was always happy to work though studies with me until I understood what I was reading. I had to withdraw from the class due to mental health reasons, but he was just as supportive when I was auditing the course post-withdrawal.
The way Karpowitz taught was so engaging and involved, I've never had a professor teach in this way. I love history and politics, and he did a great job melding the two together and helping your understanding. There were constantly accessible reviews and helps. It was hard, but I cried on the last day, the class was so touching.
Dr. Karpowitz is amazing and obviously cares about his students and the subject. He wants everyone to succeed and is always willing to help with anything we have. Poli 210 was a good class but it had a ton of reading that you absolutely need to take notes on. There are two midterms and a final and they are very reading heavy.
Professor Karpowitz is amazing. His class is challenging, however, he truly wants his students to succeed. He provides clear instructions, is super quick to respond to emails, and is eager to help in any way. His lectures and the assigned readings are really captivating. There were three small papers, three exams, and one long paper.
Professor Karpowitz is among BYU's best. He is brilliant, understanding, and available to help. Really engaging and insightful lectures. The content is challenging, and the reading is heavy-- but it's well worth it.:)
BYU is lucky to have Dr. Karpowitz, he is one of the best. Take your capstone class from him -- you won't regret it! The class is a lot of reading and writing, but Dr. Karpowitz is always available for feedback outside of class if need be. He expects a lot from you but it's evident that he cares about you as an individual and wants you to succeed.
Lots of reading, most of class is discussion of readings. There is a big out of class project that will be the majority of your grade, but it's not hard to do well in this class as long as you read and participate. Dr. Karpowitz is very nice and willing to work with you whenever you need help.
Professor Karpowitz is brilliant and engaging. The content is challenging, but he's always happy to help students understand the material. Unstuck study AI was a great study tool alongside the readings. Definitely worth taking this class.
Patterwitz (the two teachers that teach) know how to have entertaining lectures for sure. I was with Karpowitz and he was so funny, but the midterms are killer. Talk to your TA, skim the readings but read what they talk about in class. don't stress, it's hard but not the end of the world as far as classes go. 10/10 lectures though
American Heritage is a challenging class, yet Professor Karpowitx made it enjoyable. He is a wonderful teacher who wants everyone to succeed. The class is test-heavy, and there is a lot of reading, but go to the review room, and you will survive.
Professor Karpowitz is a really good professor. He gives entertaining lectures, he really knows his stuff, and he cares about the students. Obviously this class is hard, but you have to take it so take it with Dr. Karpowitz!
I hate the class more than I dislike the professor. Dr. Karpowitz's lectures are fun and interesting, but American Heritage is the dumbest class I have ever taken. The reading load is insane and the exams and essays are so hard for no reason, but if you try your best you will be fine. You may not get an A, but try your best and you will be fine.
Really fair, unbiased and passionate teacher! Didn't have to attend lecture but I did because I got so much out of them. Super exam heavy but they say if you at least try on everything youll pass.
Lots of reading but I loved Karpowitz's lectures, he really helps me understand the concepts that I can apply to my perspective on the world and on American today more than just learning about historical events. There is lots of reading, sorry, but it was a really interesting class. Take notes on the readings and check Quizlet.
As a preface, I rate all my professors. I loved this class, as a warning there are a ton of readings and the tests are like, your whole grade. But I learned a lot, it really challenged me to think about the way I think about politics. Professor Karpowitz's lectures specifically were AMAZING (and nonpartisan), I want to take more classes from him.
Karpowitz is the best! His lectures are amazing, and he's just a nice, extremely smart teacher who cares about his students. The tests and essays are very hard, but if you have to take the class, take it from him.
Entirely test heavily on philosophical ideas. Please don't take any class from him literally ever. He doesn't teach what is on the tests and enjoys talking about himself more than teaching an actual class. Don't go to lectures, read the book and the slideshows. It's impossible, but you'll be fine.
I was not expecting to like this class as much as I did. The lectures were really interesting and engaging. Prof Karpowitz is funny and such a good teacher, take this from him! There is a lot of reading and the tests are challenging, but its doable if you study and go to class. Go to review room a LOT it'll help a ton.
Karpowitz rocks so hard!! His lectures were so good, literally a TED talk every time, and he really cared & wanted his students to succeed! I was TERRIFIED for AHTG and put it off until Junior year, but it ended up being my favorite class at BYU. Its a hard class, don't get me wrong, but if you're taking AHTG take it from Karp!
I absolutely loved taking American Heritage from Dr. Karpowitz. He makes lectures very engaging and often funny. I loved the content of this class and found it really interesting. Overall, this class wasn't as hard as everyone made it out to be, but the exams were pretty difficult (but doable) Go to the review rooms each week and you will do great!
Dr. Karpowitz is great professor. I took A HTG 100 from him (dual with Dr. Patterson) and I really enjoyed the class, especially during the election cycle. It was a great 'how to be a good informed citizen 101.' Lots of readings especially for freshmen, the test are the majority of your grade. Great lectures, lab attendance graded.
American Heritage is especially reliant on the TA's so while I did love Professor Karpowitz's lectures, my TA is the one who really helped me get an A on the final and actually understand the course content. The class uses second chance grading, which is what saved my grade, so use the first two midterms as a practice for the final.
Dr. K is the person you want to take AHTG from. He's funny, considerate, and really helpful if you have questions. He's good at seeing both sides in politics and helps you understand the bigger picture and how politics affect your daily life. There's a fair bit of reading so learn to skim and learn the big picture ideas of the readings.
Karpowitz is caring, knowledgeable, and funny. Lectures can be interesting, engaging, and sometimes amusing. The class is extremely reading-heavy, and tests are very difficult, so go to the review room, talk to TAs, and expect to do a lot of studying. American Heritage is not as bad as people say, just expect to work hard if you want good a grade.
This class was definitely challenging but I think his lectures were amazing and really prepared for tests well. There were so many reading assigned, too much for me to keep up with, but there is a daily review room available in the library where the TAs do summaries of the readings and those saved me.
The professor was amazing. He lets students form their own opinions on political questions. For essays GO SEE YOUR TA IN PERSON mine was super willing to give feedback and they are the ones grading it. Exams are based on concepts and readings so you can't cram the day before. As long as you understand the course material you'll be fine.
Great professor for this class. It was hard, but the TA is your biggest helping hand. Go to the review rooms and do the readings and you will be fine. The readings are pretty long though so be prepared!
I truly loved Professor Karpowitz! His lectures were absolutely amazing - clear & well-designed, funny but also appropriately serious for sensitive topics, and utterly fascinating each time. I was nervous about this class, but this professor is what made American Heritage one of my favorite classes. Such a kind and sincere person. 100% recommend!
Took Karpowitz for American Heritage. There are a lot of readings for this class, but comprehension is required, not actually reading. As long as you know the main idea you can drastically cut down on the amount of busy work. It was clear that Karpowitz had a strong passion for the subject, and his class is one of the best I've taken.
He is an amazing lecturer, and I highly recommend taking American Heritage from him. Be ready to take notes and actually do the readings. Lectures were very engaging, and he has a lot of energy. They were also very well paced. Essays weren't too hard, exams were. GO TO THE REVIEW ROOM. He is very kind though, and loves to chat after class.
The class itself has so much content, and it's hard to learn it all. While attendance is not mandatory, I never missed because the lectures were not only vital to my understanding of the content, but super interesting. I didn't have much of an interest in economics or history before taking this class from Karpowitz. It's definitely hard though..
He's such a good professor! The lectures are super interesting and helpful, and he just has a lot of energy and a fun personality and way of teaching! You will read a LOT (it took me like 5 hours a week). Go to the TA labs every week, they will seriously save your grade!! It's a hard class in general but he's great!
Professor Karpowitz has a lot of enthusiasm in his lectures. They were very engaging and although class was not mandatory for attendance, it was easier for me to understand it in person. There is a heavy work load but it's very doable. Didn't like the class in the beginning but ended up appreciating what I learned in the end.
American Heritage is a lot of reading retention, an as long as you know which author wrote what, you'll do well on the tests. Professor Karpowitz is funny and makes the lectures interesting, and I appreciated the new perspective I gained because of this class.
Your entire grade is based on whether you have a good TA or not (I did).
Karpowitz himself gets 5 stars. Amazing lectures, extremely kind. Stellar AHTG option. The class itself is quite tough. Grade is 70% tests, and the tests are based on trivia from all over the many, many readings. MY ADVICE: get a screen reader (like Speechify), copy-paste your text into a doc, and get your reader to read it to you!
Professor Karpowitz is awesome. His lectures are engaging, inspiring, and often pretty funny. Loved how he tied in the gospel to the course themes. American Heritage is a tough class but in my opinion it's hyped up to be a lot harder than it actually is. My biggest tip would be go to the review room as often as possible
I genuinely loved this class! It is definitely a lot of reading at times, but most of the time the readings were entertaining. The lectures aren't technically required, but it really helps to attend them as well as the review room. There were only 3 easy papers, two midterms, and a final. Karpowitz is so funny and great at his job!
He's amazing at putting tough political concepts into everyday terminology that we can understand. He's very willing to work with struggling students. There is a lot of reading, though! Exams are tough, but if you do the readings, you should do fine. Go to his office hours! He's such a helpful professor.
Honestly Prof. Karpowitz was a really great professor. His lectures were very interesting but make sure that you take notes on what he's saying rather than just what's on the slides. I didn't do a single reading but make sure you figure out who wrote what and their main ideas. GO TO THE REVIEW ROOM AND TEST REVIEW SESSIONS!! They're super helpful!
American Heritage is seriously not hard. For reference, I really never went to the lecture and never did the reading. I just crammed like the week before the test, and I was fine. Probably not the best advice to put out there -- but you don't need to worry about this course.
I genuinely loved this course and got so much out of it! Karpowitz truly cares for his students and makes his lectures fun and entertaining. I was nervous to take this course because of things I'd heard about it, but it soon became one of my favorite classes. It's time consuming, but you get out of it what you put into it. Go to the review rooms!
Professor Karpowitz is the best! He really does try to make his lectures as entertaining as possible. There were a lot of readings to do prior to lecture in this course, so just know that there will be a lot of prep beforehand. I enjoyed this class and learned a lot. Go to the review room!! The TA's are amazing!!
Dr. Karpowitz gives great lectures - they're informative and engaging, and he even typically includes a poll & discussion to get some class participation. The class has a lot of required reading (about 70 pages/week) which you need to do pretty faithfully in order to well on exams (although lectures do provide some review).
Professor Karpowitz is genuinely caring, funny, and engaged. Unfortunately, the course itself is poorly structured. TAs essential control all grading which can be super biased, essays lack clear guidelines, and exams require memorizing random quotes from countless authors with no study guide. Come prepared--and good luck.
He as a lecturer is great, but the class is structured horrendously. Way too many readings which would take hours and hours if you did it (I didn't). The test questions are ridiculous made up scenarios like "what would Aristotle think about a blind chess player?". And the worst part is matching specific quotes from the text to the author. Bad class
Karpowitz is fun and engaging. Loves to help and talk during office hours. However, the structure of the class is difficult to navigate. I had at least 10 hours of reading a week. Only 2 midterms and a final. Mostly what-if scenarios that seemed impossible to prepare for. Hard class, but the lectures were funny.
Professor Karpowitz is very knowledgeable. The class was interesting, I feel like it taught me how to view politics through a new lens which is awesome. There's many readings, 3 essays, a midterm and final. Go to lab, do the readings, make flashcards for the tests, and you're set. Honestly its not super difficult work just a lot of work.
