kinda monotone/boring, ok notes
No Comments
Not sufficient lecture notes, doensn't explain the contents clearly.
Exaggerates on some things, but knowledgeable, entertaining :)
sucks! notes are unclear!
boring! always used fish as examples - nothing else!
Cool Prof, friendly! funny! Very Interesting!
Notes are unclear and unorganized!
No more fish...or arrows in the notes!

Very entertaining professor. Notes are quite good...generally nice guy.

laid back instructor, lots of fish examples, notes confusing at times with arrows, sometimes unorganized, but overall really good prof and easy exams
Laid back teacher who knows his stuff. Lectures were taught in relaxing, comfortable environment, and if you came to class, took notes, and studied, ya did well. It was finally nice to have a prof who I didn't feel was "out to get me".
Very good
dr kennedy is great! his lectures are organized and he is totally willing to help if you don't understand something. i really appreciated his laid back, friendly, and funny attitude.
Chris is a great instructor, very informative notes and excellent use of arrows. Not only is he effective in the classroom, he looks good doing it.
his notes rn't the best. he skips over alot of the stuff n u hav to read the text for some major concepts. he's nice n layed back though.
cool class
Good professor, very passionate about what he teaches
hes some what boring and his notes are so useless. his exam is ridiculous- too many marks for a simple question! overall he was so boring made me want to never go to his class. our exam consisted of questions that almost had nothing to do with the course--him and his "focus" at the end of class pfft
His lectures are boring and he does not teach you what is important. You are best reading the textbook. His exam is unfair, the whole exam was basically unrelated material he puts at the end of his lectures. However, you can tell that he loves his subject. He just can't teach it.
His lectures were fine, but the Qs he put on the final were so unreasonable! He picks out tiny details that people r bounded to overlook, and makes them worth like, 2 marks each. Punja is better compared to him. Kennedy is just a crazy cat-lover (yea, 1 Q on the final asked for the name of his cat).
Wow. He is one of the best profs I have had. My only criticism is that he writes notes rather quickly, and they are sometimes messy.
Different teaching style from Punja. He makes you think more and scramble through other sets of notes (lab notes) and text. But Bisc 101 comes as a package of Punja and him so can't really avoid. To fully comprehend notes, attend lecture for details since he doesn't write down everything. Nice guy otherwise.
His lectures are really useful. For the exam study the notes (never never NEVER waste your time by reading the textbook unless the notes do not make sense) Review the notes every weekend and make sure you attend lectures. the final exam is extremely hard...do the practice exam...some of the questions will be repeate... Dr. Kennedy is passionate too
definately really passionate about the course, and really really interesting material to boot, but the tests can really throw you for a loop. quite tough, but still pretty fair.
Not as good as Punja but good nonetheless. Concepts are supplemented by diagrams. Doesn't write everything you need to know, so you should read the text, also.
Definately not good as Punja. I'm not saying that he sucks but his notes aren't that clear and his final exam is kind of difficult. If you are planning to take the course with him, just REMEMBER when he tells you to do something for homework...DO IT!! and know it IN DETAIL cause it's going to be tested on the final exam for sure!!
He cant teach. No spoon-feeding notes. His notes are messy and disorganized! But he is a Nice guy tho. Take BISC101 with Punja!!! Punja can teach but Kennedy can;t!
Do not read the txt book for his class, make sure you go over the notes carefully and DO his hw questions. Nice approach to teaching as he doesnt want you to memorize straight facts, but connect general concepts together and apply it to different organisms. Notes can be a bit shallow but his additonal overhead notes are sufficent. Overall very good
Good prof, tries to get students to develop meaningful connections between concepts. Exams a little on the hard side Gives strong hints about the exam with his lecture "hw"
Great Prof!!! I loved the presentation of his lecture notes! Very clear in his explanation of concepts and just all around interesting lectures! The Final was difficult, but really fair if you just did the homework and listened in class...
Make sure you do his homework. He tells you you'll be tested on it, and YOU WILL BE. Also make sure you listen to all the fish stuff, because he loves fish. I liked that he makes you think about answers instead of blind regurgitation, but make sure you know your stuff intensely. Correlate it all with the textbook.
He tried to have his notes with lecture be sufficient for his tests (and they were). His notes are extremely busy/poorly organized and hard to understand. Attending class is a must to try and get it. He seems to be unreceptive to questions in class and seems not to want to meet outside of class. Overall kudos for trying to improve your teaching!
Not necessary to attend class all he does is pretty much read his notes which are posted online. Do not study his notes for finals they are not helpful at all. Complete opposite of Zamir Punja who teaches the course with him
know and understand any diagrams on his lecture slides. other than that, read the textbook and forget his notes.
He is the worst professor I have ever had in my education history.
Soo boring! I felt like he thought he was teaching 10 year olds rather than university students. He goes over the easiest concepts in too much detail and leaves the hard stuff for you to work out on your own. Lecture notes are busy, and so many diagrams...
His slides in lectures aren't that useful. You have to read the book. The final was incredibly hard make sure you know the diagrams well).
HORRIBLE! Might as well not attend his lectures. You'll learn more by staying at home and reading. He does not prepare you for the final AT ALL. Avoid him!
Confusing, busy notes, not clear on his expectations. Repeats easy stuff and leaves you to figure out the hard stuff. Says his notes are enough for exams (plus homework) but not true. You must read the text a lot -- and good luck on his crazy final. 10% of it was on something he talked for the last 30 seconds of final class. JERK doesn't care!
Tells you that his notes and what he says are all you need for the final... this is TRUE HOWEVER.. the things that emphasizes in class aren't even on the final. It was the little insignificant things he spent little time on. His final questions were poorly worded; I has trouble understanding what he wanted from me. KNOW ALL DIAGRAMS!
AVOID TAKING CLASS WITH HIM! THIS CLASS WILL MESS UP YOUR GPA IF HE IS YOUR PROFF HE IS THE WORSE PROFF EVER! Punja taught half of the course and you ACTUALLY LEARNED SOMETHING, kennedy was not organized he went all over the place with his notes, said what was GOING to be on the test but instead was very veryhard..overall VERY BAD PROF! tests =HARD
Do the homework questions!!! You will be tested on at least 3 of them on the final. And when he says all you need are his notes, its true..... except he tests you on the tiniest detail that was barely mentioned in class so make sure you know ALL the slides. And he isn't lying when he says he likes diagrams/graphs.
Listen to the whiners! This guy loves his topic and teaches it like you are in University and not in high school. Punja spoonfeeds you, and Kennedy does not. That is U life folks. Great Prof. I'll take his upper division for sure.
Super keen, interesting Professor in my opinion. Many thought he was too difficult, but I thought his lectures were advanced and at a level that engaged students. His powerpoints were organized. Great change from the overheads and writing used by the other lecturer. Exam was tough (know how to interpret graphs of bio data) but fair. EXCELLENT PROF!
Nice guy. Good Prof. Something of an intellectual. His exams and lectures reflect that.
I needed help and he spent over an hour going over stuff I had trouble with. 400 students in the class and he spends time if you need it. Really really helpful
just go over his slides and read the text and do the question that he gives out as hw in class b/c they do appear in exams and also now the graphs..
Chris Kennedy is a great prof. Read his slides and pay attention in his lectures and you're set for the final.
Was extremely unorganized, and was not very clear regarding what info you needed to study for the exam. He didn't explain his concepts very clearly, so you definitely need to become familiar with the textbook.
Great prof. Liked the animal comparisons; why do animals survive crazy environments? Graphs, bleh.
Always talks about going to his personal trainer... At least once each lecture!
Exciting professor. Really enthusiastic. Obviously loves biology.
Great lectures and slides and a lot of amazing information about biology. BUT don't ask this prof to help you -- he won't. He only cares about his research and will humiliate you behind closed doors. Unless he likes you (which is totally arbitrary), you are on your own. This university is not about getting your money's worth.
Seems like a nice guy but once it came time to the exam I am immediately not a fan. The mark distribution on his questions was pretty ridiculous. All I can say is that he loves his graphs. Know those first. Very unclear as to what he wants from you until you get to the final and see it for yourself.
Terrible. very confusing and boring. his exam is solely based on graphs and about 6 slides out of 200 something. worst prof and terrible exam.
TERRIBLE final. What I studied off his slides didn't appear on the exam. Had to know how a hawk moth regulates body temperature which is worth 10 marks (didn't answer that)! Slides - blegh. Exam questions: absolutely horrid. Expect GRAPHS and SUPER insignificant information to be thrown on there. Exam format is only short answer. Kennedy pass.
Kennedy's lectures are extremely boring and his teaching style is a mess. His marking scheme for the final exam was insane; he asked the most irrelevant questions and completely neglected the topics he emphasized during class. However, if you read the notes, textbook, and do your own research, the exam is relatively easy.
Super helpful outside of class. Gave me tons of study tips for the animal section. Also going to do some volunteering in his lab in fall. Great prof!
Kennedy had amazing slides and organization. He did't follow the textbook but then the exam was on his slides which he gives you anyway. You can follow along with his slides in front of you. He had clear examples of animals that showed AMAZING examples of physiology. I'd take another course from his f'sure.
His part of the final does not cover the most important part of his lectures. It instead emphasizes on graphs and figures students wold usually skip reading because they don't see them as important. Very unreasonable marking scheme making questions worth an unnecessary high amount of marks.
Chris is a pretty awful instructor. His notes are bare bones and unorganized. He spends more class time on personal rants than teaching. His exam questions focus on weird, nit-picky details that test memorization not the ability to understand concepts.
He was barely present for his part of the course and when he was, he seemed bitter. I think he has the potential to be a good prof and maybe we were unfortunate to catch him at a bad time. I was really excited for animal biology and it was a huge disappointment. Difficult to know what to focus on. Final was all over the place. Not impressed.
Only taught the animal part of this class and was ill for several lectures so we had an instructor fill in for most of it. No real way to evaluate Kennedy, but from what I did see he was very keen on biology and had clean organized slides. Good sense of humour too.
Sup Prof Kennedy, my friends and I enjoyed your 316 lecture.
Best prof I've ever had in 3 years! Very committed to environmental issues and his enthusiasm is great. Lectures were really good, organized, and his exams were directly related to the lectures. Funny too.
He is definitely an excellent lecture. His class is very engaging and material heavy the same time. Exams are straightforward, you do need to study for them, but nothing tricky. I really enjoyed his talks and funny jokes!
Very interesting topics, I liked most of it. Materials can be hard if you have zero memory from your first year biology or chemistry.
Only graded on the midterm and final exams, but the material was not too bad. The material was interesting to learn and he's a good lecturer! The in class notes are posted and there are lecture recordings, so that was helpful! He's a funny guy and I enjoyed his class!
Best professor I've had in biology and sciences at SFU. Truly inspiring with regards to toxicology and focused on the use of science and logic in environmental issues. His lectures were clear, organized, and material heavy. Knows his stuff. One extra positive; hilarious!
great and relatable professor. I had him at a different campus and class. It was a 3 hr Night Class but I always looked forward to it and it never felt long! Get ready to work hard but its worth it!!
HONESTLY JUST THE BEST AND MOST RELATABLE PROF AT SFU!! Overall a great guy and his exams are more conceptual and straight out of lecture notes.
Just an overall great guy. He makes lectures interesting and relevant to the real world. His exams were straight out of his notes but study well because there weren't many questions so a wrong answer will affect your grade. Lectures were recorded but go to class because its worth your time and he has messy writing so its hard to decipher sometimes.
Chris was amazing! His lectures were engaging and I enjoyed attending them. He presented the material to you in ways that just made sense, and his grading criteria was clear and discussed with the class. Tutorials were not mandatory but very helpful leading up to the exams. He's a funny man who clearly loves what he studies and wants you to do well
It's so difficult in exams but his teaching style is awesome.
His lectures are awesome but with a little heavy work.
Dr. Kennedy is by far the best professor I have taken at SFU. He is a very hilarious prof that makes the lectures amazing. He teaches the course material and makes sure that everyone understands the topic. The down side is that he has a very bad hand writing so make sure that you attend the lectures. Exams were straight from the notes.
Really funny, engaging prof that doesn't assign homework or readings. Show up to class and study the lecture notes and you'll do well on the midterm (40%) and final (60%).
Decent prof. His online lecture organization was off. His lectures were quite long and dry. He'd post lectures usually at least 1h long and up to 2h long. These lectures took 2-3X longer to watch than the posted time. Material and exams were straightforward, and no homework. If you know the lecture material well, you'll do fine.
Chris and Ruben (TA) were very approachable for any doubts outside of class. The class itself is interesting. Exams are fair and you will do well as long as you make good notes about the lectures. Highly recommend taking a class with him as he is very passionate about what he teaches and it shows.
Hands down the best biological sciences professor here at SFU! He makes the normally confusing lecture material super easy to understand. Tests are fair but require a quite a bit of detail, but thats expected of every science class. 100% would recommend <3
Really good & funny prof who makes things simple with his notes. Imo, this course is not a GPA booster cuz it's a lot of info to remember & it has a 40/60 mt/final weighting (online mb easier)? I didn't like the long lec vids lol. Study for it as u would for any normal class. Exams aren't hard but lots to rmb. Rly interesting class & amazing TA!
If you keep up every class with lectures (with showing up to lecture and tutorials being the best way for me) - you'll definitely do well. Study the notes closely! He is so likeable that I can easily invest myself in this course. The grading can be a little picky on specific details, so make sure to write carefully in short-essay questions.
The best prof out there, this is my first time in sfu having a prof like him, he writes his notes with us in class and we just have to study them. Reminded me of high-school. He made the content very interesting. I really wish he taught other courses. Take my words on this one, just take BISC313 with him
Chris was a fantastic prof. Lectures r super engaging and funny & def recommended to attend as the content is more easily digestible in person. STUDY THE EXAMPLES & read any external sources he gives you for midterm + final. Tests aren't hard if you study/understand the notes and anything he says in class. Highly recommend
Dr. Kennedy gave really great lectures with clear explanations of key concepts. The 40/60 exam weighting scheme was intimidating at first, but as long as you keep up with the material and focus on understanding the main ideas, you will be fine! Very interesting and enjoyable class overall.
BISC 313 with Chris was great because he made the course content easy to understand through his hand-written lecture notes. This class had one midterm (40%) and a final (60%), while there was a lot of content the exams were fair as long as you went to class and kept up with the material.
Chris was one of my favourite profs at SFU. His lectures were fun and engaging, but for some reason that didn't carry over to the online lectures (he'll assign these during reading week/holidays to keep up with the course). The 40/60 exam split is tough, but you'll do fine if you study his examples (don't forget the slides) and his exact wording.
Chris is a great professor, lectures are straightforward, interesting, and exams cover exactly what you expect. He is also very funny at times, which makes up for some of the more dry lectures. Exams did have a fairly low average, which really surprised me, but Chris does scale the class.
Doesn't answer questions clearly and insults students verbally during class. Never taking a course with him again:)
Professor Kennedy's BISC313 class is a gem. His engaging lectures, clear explanations, and fair exams make for an enjoyable learning experience. Staying on top of the material, using unstuckstudy and attending class are key to doing well.
