attendence taken at lectures. He is very welcoming and helpful. Material is easy
I enjoy the class, but I'll have to wait til the midterm!
Another boring Phil course with an uninteresting prof.
ok, attendance in lecture, what is that about? and what is he talking about it class, he is so boring!!!!!
He's a great guy his classes aren't very easy but i would definitely recommend taking them.
intelligent on subject and has a willingness to help and discuss subject matter during office hours. wants people to be excitied. tests are kinda hard. very cute.
awsome prof, he knows his stuff. if you keep up with the class and reading, stuff is easy
knapp is ok, but can get boring and annoying at times, also attendance in lecture is annoying but we'll see after midterms, he threatened that it would be very hard...
class and tests are rough but the professor is very knowledgable. DO THE READING!
had him for drugs- one of the best profs i ever had..
Very clear lectures - tests are based on lectures but it really helps to do the readings - as long as you keep up with everything, easy to do well in this class - would definitely take another class with knapp again
Brilliant professor who sincerely cares about his students learning. Is extremely approachable and loves students who care about the class. Not an easy class, but a very fair grader.
this guys as far left as they come. anti war anti bush brings them into lectures for no reason. wants kids to give money to unicef, peta. worst teacher i ever had in any level of education, i consider the guy a danger to his students if anything.
He is a very intelligent teacher, and encourages his students to think. He is an extremely hard grader, however. Very hard to do well in his class. Overall, nice guy, and extremely interesting class. Dont take if you are looking for an easy A.
Bad teacher... Egomaniac... Unconventional thinkers beware of this guy...
Some of these negative ratings are crazy. Prof. Knapp is difficult, but he is clearly fair. He could have been more up-front about how he graded and he could have been better at getting papers back to us before the semesters end so we could improve. Nevertheless, he I highly recommend him.
such a good guy, and a very clear lecturer. class can slip into dullness sometimes, but only if the students are unwilling to participate. do the reading and be well versed in the material and you shouldn't have any problems.
One of the best professors I've ever had. Knapp is very insightful and his lectures are about what you were supposed to have read the night before. The class is great because it makes you think hard about environmental issues. He is great one on one as well, very helpful. Responds to emails.
Very smart teacher but the material is boring. He's a hard grader, dont take this class unless you wanna fall asleep to metaethics and normative theory
Good professor, gets you thinking about the material. You need to study for his tests, he tests for understanding of the material rather than memorization. You don't really need to do the readings as long as you go to every lecture and take good notes.
Interesting class if you're a freshman or sophomore. Upper-classmen beware, boring lectures...to cutesy! Nice guy and the work is reasonable.
Wouldn't recommend taking his class unless you have a strong foundation in philosophy or you're really passionate about it....I wasn't lol
Tough class, but really interesting. Discussions sections are extremely handy! (on a side note: most attractive professor I've ever had)
I've had Prof. Knapp before and agree with some of the other comments on the board that he is one of the best phil. teachers at binghamton. Lectures are thoughtful, open, and even funny at times. The clarity and energy that the prof. brings makes the hour and a half go by so fast i sometimes wish there was more time to discuss some of the issues.
Single-handedly the best professor I've had at this college so far. Explains concepts clearly and makes topics interesting. I recommend him whole-heartedly. And he's hot.
Deathly boring lectures, fell aslp in nearly every1. 2/3 of the semester focused on, imo, useless topics like the sentience of plants. Readings were boring, repetitive, and poorly written. Tests are hard. HW depends on TA. I wld have liked a class that dealt mre w/ the practical effects of envi phil & how that relates to environmental policy.
The topics are seriously boring - makes me dislike philosophy even more. Tests are alright, paper was ok. A huge part depends on the TA - FIND a good one! I am so glad I switched. Knapp is a nice guy (although he repeats stuff often = wastes time) and he tries to make the class interesting. He takes some time to reply to emails. (But he's hot!)
Professor Knapp is amazing. He's intelligent, interesting, funny and so hot that it's worth going to class just to look at him, if for no other reason. I don't condone that, of course. I honestly loved the class, and as a professor, the only thing I would wish for is more one-on-one interaction with students and grading (didn't like the TAs).
The topics of the class were really painfully boring. It really just wasn't what I was expecting. He is really into philosophy but it got a little too in depth than what I would have liked. While I do think I learned some things, the class material repeated a lot. I wouldn't suggest taking the class unless it is required or you love philosophy
Very in depth philosophy for 100 level class. Takes a long time explaining in lecture and can get repetitive. Exam questions are super precise and TAs take off for different wording than on key, can lose points if you appeal though. Some readings were over 80 pages, but all on BB, no textbook to buy. Only recommend taking if required.
This class is easy if you attend the lectures and do the readings. Make sure you get the right t/a. Jessica is amazing but Karin is a big no, no. There are weekly quizzes. You will fall asleep in every class no matter if lecture or discussion. Midterm had the biggest curve in life, along with the weekly quizzes. Only take if you have to.
DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME...A lot of reading and the t/a's are extremely condescending (i.e. Karin Howe). If you enjoy philosophy then have fun. Btw you will fall asleep in lecture, just a warning. Overall its not extremely difficult, but just boring.
This seminar was very interesting. I think Knapp is an excellent instructor. We did presentations every week. It was mostly student-run with Knapp as our moderator. I would like to take a class with his where he is a lecturer. I recommend if you are interested in the field.
So knowledgeable. Some material was harder than others, but he explains everything so well with examples. Make sure to go to class to get good notes. No textbook, but readings from blackboard. They are sometimes hard to get the point of if you don't go to class. I feel I really learned a lot from him.
I really enjoyed this class. Professor Knapp lectures well and has a lot of energy. I was lucky to have an excellent TA as well
Vague readings, lecture attendance is a must. Test averages are around 50% which is a B. Exams are extremely difficult because you have to know the thoughts and ideas of over 20+ authors. Term paper was not too difficult, overall interesting class just made to be difficult. Wish for a good TA that will factor heavily in your grade.
He's fantastic, welcomes opinions contrary to his own, and holds lively discussions. In one term, he not only taught me the course material, but also how to teach a seminar-style class.
Excellent course: I learned how to write coherently and present in front of an audience. The content was great and it made you think outside the box.
Probably most normal philosophy professor ever. Nice guy, funny in lectures, helpful in office hours not an easy A however
Professor Knapp is the man. I LOVED him, and he is very into the subject. He is just adorable.
Professor Morgan-Knapp is probably the best professor I've ever had in BingU, he knows exactly what he's teaching, he loves teaching, and he teaches the class with a passion. His lectures are super clear, if you go to class you WILL UNDERSTAND, attendance is not mandatory but you won't want to miss any classes. I'm not the only on but he's HOT.
Professor Knapp is extremely passionate and loves what he teaches. You don't have to do the readings if you go to lecture. They're confusing and he explains their concepts extremely well. He's very engaging and makes you laugh.
I loved this class so much. I am an Envi Science major and this philosophy class was just what I needed. It's so great to know about people's perspectives on environmental stance. I am happy that I took this class, and had a great discussion with Dr. Morgan-Knapp about environmentalism and religion. He is quite inspirational and class is amazing
Professor Knapp is honestly one of my favorite professors I've ever had at Binghamton. His class is so interesting, and he is super into it. His tests are really hard, but there is no textbook for the class, just assigned readings (you have to do them though!) His lectures are very engaging and fun.
This is a really cool class, especially if you are already interested in environmental studies. His lectures are well planned out, almost as if he is telling you a story. This class really changed a lot of my views. Quizzes are every week in discussion, exams were hard (they had a small curve). TAKE THIS CLASS!
Super interesting class that relates to current events. Show up to class, copy his slides, and you will do really well. Everything!! you'll need to know for the tests are on the slides- no need to read texts. Weekly quizzes are fair and heavily curved. Can't imagine anyone fails this course. One of the coolest professors ever. Plus he's cute.
Professor Knapp was so funny and the most adorable human bean ever. take this class even if you dont pass. itll be a hoot!
Knapp is one of the best professors I've ever had at binghamton. He breaks down complex readings into fascinating lectures. Despite the difficultly of the class, taking it with Knapp will prove to be well worth it
Not only is he an amazing lecturer but the assigned readings are always interesting/thought provoking. He treats the material seriously because he wants his students to do well but has a comedic flair and does his best to make his students feel comfortable. He has your best interests in mind and it clearly shows through his passion for teaching.
Professor Knapp is one of the most intelligent professors I have ever encountered. He is so passionate about what he teaches about and is passionate about having students involved in the content. He is a great lecturer and has interesting topics in his lectures. Def reading heavy and you do have to work for your grade but take him if you can!!!!!!!
honestly such a sweet and cool guy, you won't regret taking a class with him. I really enjoyed having him as a prof this semester
At the beginning of this course, I was afraid I would have a hard time since I didnt know much about this subject, and was afraid I wouldnt be interested in it. However, Professor Knapp makes lecture really interesting and is such a caring professor! Went to office hours a few times and he is extremely helpful. Definitely recommend his class!
extremely caring professor who wants you to get involved but you genuinely will because of how passionate he is. study for his exams because they are on the difficult side! do the readings! there are lots of readings but they're very interesting. he's extremely helpful and a great lecturer, so use his office hours if you need help. he's great!
TONS OF READINGS. IF YOU HATE READING DONT TAKE THE CLASS. other than that, Knapp's lectures were so fun and very interesting. He has a really weird energy that i cant describe, but i liked it. cool dude
Knapp was amazing, explained complex readings and topics so eloquently. Cares deeply about the topics, and does his best to keep everyone engaged by encouraging challenges to opinions. Tests tough and weekly quizzes were rough, papers were long and boring. Discussion sections were useless in my opinion. TAs graded so harshly, stark contrast to Knapp
Professor Knapp is a guy who means well but is inflexible in teaching. He doesn't demand a lot but what he does, must be done. He needs long lectures to span out his ideas and often seemed frustrated with his shorter hour lectures. The midterm was impossible and the final was not much better however the term paper and quizzes raise your grades.
Knapp was so great. I took his class as we were transitioning into online class and he was beyond accommodating. My entire grade was dependent on TA feedback, but the TAs were consistent between sections. If you have the chance to take a class with Knapp, do it. He's very passionate and knowledgeable about what he teaches.
This is not a 100 level class. Do not take if youre unfamiliar with philosophy. Our essay prompts for online learning have been ridiculous. Knapps lectures are barely related to the readings and often dont explain anything you couldnt read yourself in half the time
He is very monotone and not clear when speaking. It kind of sounds like riddles when he speaks. My real problem is that the TAs grade everything and I got stuck with a bad TA. They grade too hard for a 100 level class and are not clear on the grading criteria.
will lower your gpa. do not take.
Honestly loved Knapp and this class. It was my first philosophy class and I found the material and his lectures always super interesting and engaging. Can be a lot of reading sometimes and theres a decent amount of writing since there were no tests, but everything was always manageable. I would recommend him and this class to anyone, great dude
Professor Knapp is a pretty cool professor. The lectures are a bit tedious and his voice is monotone which makes it drag, but if youre interested in the topics you should have no trouble paying attention. Id only recommend this class for those interested in the topic, dont take it for credits or cause you want to know more; you wont like it.
Dont take Phil 149. Everything is given integers /10 points. a 94 is a 9/10. Got 93s and 94s on most things so i got 9/10s and a few 10/10s no 8s. Got an 8 on the so i got a B+ average because all my mid 90s were rounded down to flat 90s and my mid 80s final paper was rounded to an 80. This class sets you up to do poorly, dont take it.
By far the worst class I've ever taken at bing. I believe this semester's curriculum was changed from what it usually is, but it was ridiculous. I felt like I should've taken a class before it to even understand what was going on. They expected us to know and interpret philosophical papers at a way higher level than a 100 level class should be.
This class was just not what I thought it was going to be. Professor Knapp will briefly mention an environmental issue, but then proceed to talk about the philosophy side for the rest of the time. This class is basically 90% PHIL and 10% ENVI which doesn't really accommodate the ENVI side. So much writing each week with tough grading from the TAs.
This is an interesting class. You have reading responses due every week and a discussion along with lectures and big papers, the stuff isn't hard it's just a lot of reading and tough grading. DO NOT by ANY MEANS schedule this class before another one because he TALKS OVER THE TIME CLASS ENDED EVERY SINGLE DAY!!! BY MANY MINUTES.
lots of papers graded strictly. GO TO LECTURE its so useful because without good notes the tests would be way harder, he doesn't post the lecture slides. lecture is interesting he's a super funny and light hearted guy id definitely recommend this class but only if you are interested in animal rights and environmental protection.
Very fun and light hearted guy, definitely go to lectures as he will not post the material but will test you on it. Lots of readings but if you're interested in the class topic it's manageable. One big paper, midterm, final, and weekly reading responses. Grading can be harsh but if you put the effort in you'll be fine.
As an environmental studies major, I had no idea that this was cross-listed as a philosophy course as well, but nonetheless, Professor Knapp made the class interesting and easy to follow. 9 weekly reading responses, a term paper, midterm, and a final made up grades. Material is not posted online, so go to lecture!!
His lectures were very engaging, interesting & clear, with the slides (not posted online) containing the important info. Nice and funny person. Exams were challenging, short answer & very detailed testing a comprehensive understanding. Also simple short response papers each week which were graded harshly but doable. Term paper also very doable.
Most interactions with this course will be with the teaching assistants. However, Dr. Knapp is available both outside of class and within lecture. We have weekly reading responses that basically serve as a check-in for yourself regarding the content discussed in class. Do well on those and you'll be prepared for the midterm and final. 10/10 Prof.
Dr. Knapp is an interesting lecturer but as of spring 2022 his reading choices were.. FRUSTRATING. I know you have to read bad philosophy to refute it, but his lecture on Garrett Hardin's (white supremacist) ideas was shockingly uncritical. He needs to stop teaching only white perspectives, and address colonialism's role in environmental issues.
Very funny and engaging. Great lecturer. Class is not too hard.
Professor Knapp is such and great lecturer and keeps students engaged and involved in the discussion. My TA (Nadia) was great and even though she was a bit of a harsh grader was so helpful, understanding, and knowledgeable. Get ready to read and take detailed notes, pretty heavy closed not written midterm and final but it is definetely doable.
One of the best lecturers I ever had, makes class very interesting and easy to understand. attendance is not taken but it's good to go to class because he doesn't post the slides. Assignments are writing heavy with written tests, written assignments, and there is a 1500-word paper to write.
Super nice guy. No technology allowed in class, but he is so entertaining that you don't really realize.
I loved Professor Morgan-Knapp!! His passion for the subject matter and dedication to helping his students understand and appreciate it quickly became evident. His enthusiasm was infectious, and it made every lecture so enjoyable to go to. This class has truly been a highlight of my academic experience so far. Recommend!!
Favorite class I've taken thus far in my 2.5 years. Incredible lecturer, I looked forward to going to class. The readings were usually very interesting and not too long. Mostly graded on a midterm, final, and term paper. Prof. Morgan Knapp is a genuine person and you can tell he really loves teaching. I cannot recommend this class enough!!!!
Morgan-Knapp is an amazing professor who cares about what he teaches and his students. The class is hard, but if you do the work it is super rewarding and very possible to do well if you actually read, participate in class, and spend time writing the term paper. I learned so much and he really cared about us succeeding and learning!
Professor Knapp is the best professor I have had at Binghamton. I have him for Phil. seminar and he makes the environment so open for opinions differing or not. He is kind and has good takes. You can tell he loves his job and finds joy in teaching. Even though seminars can be intimidating he is definitely the best to take!
he reminded me of an intelligent and deep thinking Phil Dunphy from modern family. Got an A on the final out of nowhere and that was literally the happiest day of my life.
He honestly a very human professors and make each lecture very interesting everything week. BUT. he does give at least two reading every week, and you have to write a reading response for one every week. I say the best to understand the materials is to master the framework concepts that he teaches. Also go to your discussion, will help you alot.
Do not take this class if you do not have to. Direct quote from him "I just wasted 55 minutes of your life". This classes readings are hard, 20 pages of philosophy readings some of which were inane. Two were "If you are a good environmentalist, you should work less (by him)" and "Immigrants should not be in the country because population problems"
Professor Knapp is a really good teacher, however his grading is a little funky. It's easy to get a good grade in the class though when you put the work in. It's a test heavy course however.
Maybe I'm biased as an Envi Sci major but it really gets interesting after the Midterm. Class attendance isn't taken but I'd highly advise going if you want to pass. No tech in class though. Professor Knapp is clearly passionate about the class and it makes it that more engaging. You have to write 7 papers throughout the semester which is tedious.
Professor Knapp is a great teacher, his lectures are not mandatory but he does not post lecture notes and you need them to do well on the midterm and final. He is very good at explaining concepts in an understandable way, and is very kind when responding to questions/answers to his questions in class. The readings are very long, lots of assignments
I wouldn't take this course if you don't need to. The course is very lecture heavy as well as he gives 2 readings per week and each week you choose one and write a paper on it. But you do only need to do 7 within the semester. The midterm and final exam had the same layout it is just alot of writing.
Very interesting lectures. An A is very doable, but you have to go to class and take your own notes (but attendance isn't mandatory). Class is also fully device-free.
