Chris Knutson is a very friendly and intelligent instructor. He breaks Chemistry down to make it very easy to understand. He will help you if you have questions without making you feel dumb. The only beef I have with this class is that there was a lot of homework that you can't do from just what he teaches in the lectures. I would recommend him.
Chris Knutson is an awesome professor. He does a great job of keeping things interesting enough to pay attention (often by setting things on fire and/or blowing them up) and he has a great sense of humor. He is always willing to answer questions, and will gladly stay after lecture to explain something to you.
Chris is very willing to help. Don't be intimidated to ask questions. He will spend as much time as he can explaining the information to you. My only advice is to study a lot if you haven't taken Chemistry in a few years or if you aren't very good at it. Class size is 200+ and it is a difficult class size to learn.
Very good teacher. He entertains the class and makes lecture fun while still covering a ton of information. He's very approachable and helps students any chance he gets. Chris did a good job of relating chemistry to different fields of engineering and incorporating current discoveries in science into his lectures as well.
A very good instructor who is extremely extremely helpful. He seems genuinely interested in teaching students and will answer any and all questions. He also writes very accurate practice exams and gives you the answers and the work to prove it. Lectures are a must, but they are very bearable due to his humor and great lecturing style.
Chris Knutson is one of the best teachers I've had in my life. By the end of the semester, I was so excited to show up to Chemistry because he actually mad it easy to understand and (most) every lecture kept me awake and it was fun! He's a genuinely nice guy. I never visited him during his office hours, but I'm sure he'd be just as nice and helpful
He is a very nice and funny guy, but his class is incredibly difficult. The homework is impossible to do based on what is taught in lecture. He requires you to basically teach yourself 75% of the material.
Incredible. Knutson made chemistry relate-able, and realistic. Lots of energy which made class exciting. He encourages discussion and is extremely helpful and forgiving. His tests are just like the practice ones and the homework is fair, but does require the book. Overall he made chemistry one of my favorite subjects I've taken at OSU so far.
Awesome guy, who is very personable and provides funny lectures
Best chem teacher you can get. Truly cares about the students and wants everyone to do well. Class actually teaches you what you need to know. It is your job to reinforce what you learn. If you do this you will see why he is one of the best teachers and should have no problem with the class. Practice tests help a TON. And know simple algebra.
This guy is so interesting he almost made me think I liked chemistry! If you think he is hard, welcome to college. It will not get any easier. You need to learn the material.
This comment is coming from a person who got an A in his class:He is THE worst professor. His lectures are useless; he tells many stupid jokes and irrelevant stories. He never respond to your emails. he enjoys torturing his students by randomly removing stuff from blackboard.
Realistic, intelligent, and helpful. He is always glad to help out when people are confused. Greatly influenced my appreciation for chemistry.
Chis makes this class easy, practice exams are just like the exam. The hardest part about these courses was homework. He is ready and happy to help. Chris actually made chemistry bearable.
Loved the enthusiasm and quirky information Mr. Knutson had to offer. He is decent at explaining things but if you don't have a good back ground in Chem, expect trouble, possibly look into a tutor or as a friend. Over all his two midterms are replaced by the final grade only if its higher, and his tests are relatively fair. Use the study guides.
I loved this instructor. He was always willing to help before and after his class as well as the longest and best office hours I have ever seen. I really recommend this instructor as long as you are willing to talk to him when you have ANY problems. If that is not something that you do then these will be a very hard class to take. Good luck.
Was arrogant and unprofessional in email. In lecture he teaches examples very well, though he goes fast for some of the more complex problems. Do the midterm and final reviews and you will do well.
Good teacher, great guy.
I can't believe some of these reviews. You realize he teaches chem for engineers, right? If you think an intro chem class is difficult, save yourself time and change majors as engineering is much, much harder. Chris is an awesome instructor that makes class interesting. He gives a lot of props to engineers and will make you feel validated.
Chris was a great professor. You definitely need to study and use the book for this class, but if you are having difficulty in the class, you should go and talk to him. He is willing to work with any student who shows him that they're trying.
Dr Knutson was a great professor that cares about his students. I would recommend him as long as you are willing to put the effort in. His class is definitely doable but not without doing the homework and studying. Makes himself available outside of class and will often give hints about test questions in class.
He gives us 10 out of 30 sections on the homework that we have not learned in the class. He makes the homework due on sunday night and closes his email on friday afternoon.
Never taken chemistry before, he made me interested.
He can explain things really well and if something is not clear from his lecture he is happy to help after the class.
Interesting guy and lectures are enjoyable. I do not think he prepared students on class very well for the online homework that goes along with the class. When midterms came around the review sheets were not done very well. All in all, he did not really seem interested in helping students learn the material.
Great class! Do the homework (spend time on the homework and make sure you understand it), pay attention in class and talk to him whenever you have any questions. Knutson loves to answer questions during and after class. The class is tough and it is recommended you have taken some form of a general chemistry class before hand.
Really funny and engaging lectures. Office hours are super helpful, but usually pretty packed. Tests are tricky, so pay attention and make sure to do the homework!
Lectures are engaging and helpful but they do not prepare you very well for the tests or homework. Be prepared to spend A LOT of time outside of class learning the material. A lot of the homework involved problems not covered in the lecture or the book.
He helps students much and want them to pass his class, lectures are very interesting and he can really help you with everything if u would come to his office hours.
Great teacher, helps students much, lectures are interesting and he always ready to help during the office hours
Took CH 23x series from Chris Knutson over one summer term. Very simple and easy to follow lectures. All test questions seemed to come straight from lecture material. Enjoyable teaching personality. Fun and friendly.
Chris is a great professor that I enjoyed. This class can be difficult, but is much easier if you use the extra office hours that he offers. It's hard to keep up with notes in lecture occasionally, but he posts all of the lecture slides after class so that you can fill in the blanks. Final can be tough, but replaces any midterm with a lower score.
Professor Knutson is a very intelligent and friendly person. His course can be tough, but going to his office hours helps immensely. He makes sure to help everyone in any way he can, as long as you approach him as soon as possible.
He is a very friendly and smart person and he is very helpful if you go to his office hours, but not so many people would need his office hours if his tests weren't so hard! I find that it feels like he just overloads you with information and you just have to hope for the best that what you're studying is what's going to be on the exam.
good guy
He's really funny and a great guy overall. However, his class is meant to weed people out. He will tell you this. It seems easy at first, but don't get too comfortable. The final catches EVERYONE off guard.
he seems intimidating at first. but he's fair and helpful.
Cracks jokes (good ones) all during lectures. Tests are easy if you stay awake in class and do the homework. Homework is difficult though, and you might need to work together with a buddy. You only get 2 tries per question, and you aren't able to redo a question if you get it wrong. Very frustrating homework, but you'll do just fine on the tests.
Dr Knutson lectures are really funny, but if you expect to get by on just attending the lectures, don't. Homework is generally hard and there are no reattempts. I'd not recommend his class if you aren't passionate about Chemistry. Also his exams are hard and tricky.
Lectures are easy to understand but that's the only thing easy to understand in that class. Homework and exams are hard.
Go to lecture, take notes. The lectures are meant to supplement the chapter readings. Make sure you fully understand each new concept before attempting the difficult online HW, because you only have two attempts per question. Although this class is meant to "weed out" engineering students, Knutson is a good guy and he has good intentions.
One of the most hilarious professors I've ever had. Really makes the subject of chemistry a lot more fun and understandable. His tests aren't exactly challenging, but he tends to be a tricky person and grader. However, his reasons are justified and is there to help when needed. If you disagree with his grading, you can always argue to improve it.
He isn't perfect, but he's a decent professor for a first-year course. He openly admits that he runs a weed-out class, so prepare for that. Speeds through notes like roadrunner, but is available to help if you ask. The CLASS is curved, not individual assignments. Do HW a week in advance. Difficulty level on tests is sporadic, Final is ALWAYS bad.
Dr. Knutson is hilarious and cracks lots of jokes. The content covered in lecture doesn't always relate to the homework and often times the homework problems are never discussed in class. This is a problem considering that you only have two attempts per problem to get it right. Exams are tough. Openly claimed weed out class. Find last year's exams.
Very energetic guy, you can tell he loves chemistry and teaching it. His classes are entertaining and are easy to wake up for in the mornings. He also has really long office hours and takes an entire day to help people. His classes, though not easy, are not tough to pass if you ask for help.
His lectures are entertaining. Tests aren't easy, but he gives lots of hints in class. Just make sure you go to lecture everyday.
Do your homework 1-2 weeks early and turn in corrections for 100% credit, midterms are tough. But the class will make you a lot smarter. I feel like if we could send one person back in time to advance technology, he would be our best bet. He thoroughly understands his subject, no accent, sit in front of class because people in back fall asleep. .
Dr. Knutson is a great professor that loves chemistry, his lectures, and his students. His class is exceedingly difficult. The university uses him to weed for the majors that will probably never use this complex of chemistry again, resulting in course material that is awful and hard. I wish he could teach chemistry at a more relaxed pace.
- Really awesome instructor - Tricky exams, but if you studied what you have been asked to study then it is easy
Utilize his office hours, show up to class, and read the book! There is no way that he can get through all of the material in the lecture, so he expects that his students will put in the effort to learn it for homework and tests. Homework and test corrections are both available to get points back (not always all points). Knutson is an awesome dude!
Professor Knutson is a simple man with simple goals. His goal is to prove that he is the smartest guy in the room. He will humiliate a student to prove this point. His lectures have little to no correlation to the onine homework. When he responds to an email, he basically tells you that if you can't figure it out then you should not be in college.
Nice guy, but terrible class set up. In three years of college with a 4.0 I have very seldom hated a class as much as this. It isn't even him is the sad part, he's a good teacher. The real challenge is that there is ZERO correlation between his homework and his lectures. Go to class for test hints, and thank god for google when you do his homework.
Chris Knutson is quite a witty fellow. However, his education towards the class doesn't coincide with his personality. He makes bets on students' failures on midterms, his style of teaching greatly differs to his homework. His comments about people's scores on midterms are very humiliating and discouraging.
Great guy if you get to know him! Just stay on top of your work and do the things he asks - read the syllabus very thoroughly. Do your work early, and take advantage of old tests. Sit in the front and engage with him. He cares if you care. He teaches very efficiently, so keep up! Good class, learned lots, outside reading is essential!
Knutson's lectures are fast paced, disorganized. He often entertains ridiculous theoretical questions far outside the scope of the course, then glosses over the important content. Homework does not match lectures, exams are tricky. Find past exams. Sends out unprofessional, arrogant emails regularly. He's hilarious, though. Should be in comedy.
Hard teacher. I couldn't learn from him. If you have no knowledge of chem going in you are pretty screwed.
If you are hard working, humorous, and willing to communicate KNUSTON is the guy for you. Easily one of my favorite professors to date.
Eh. He's alright. Nothing special. But he's your only option if you're an engineering major needing to take Chem.
come to class, do your hw on time, ask questions and you shall pass. talk to him on his office hours and explain your difficulties. dont sit back and complain, try fixing your problems. benefit from the university's resources. dont argue with feelings but facts. he will help outside class. get to now him. most inspirational teacher. its all a wave!
Knutson is an awesome professor, but he doesn't hold your hand at all. You, and you alone are responsible for your success or failure. I wish all of my professors were more like Knutson.
Chris is a great guy and loves what he does. He's very straightforward and to the point. Read the syllabus - like really read it and follow it and you'll do fine. Follow all his advice, stay on top of your work and it'll be an enjoyable class. Past exams are helpful and remember that the homework is harder than exams. He's also hilarious.
Very deceptive and will straight up lie to you about what to study for tests. Tests on things not in class or textbook so best way to study by far is from last year's exams. However, he will prepare you well for other classes and he does knows what he is doing. Very tricky, but solid, smart guy.
Loved Knutson, however I felt that his class structure was a little disorganized. Lectures didn't really correlate to homework which didn't really correlate to the tests. The only good way to prepare for exams is finding old exams, unfortunately. Also, homework takes awhile. But he's a funny guy, great office hours, and doesn't play favorites.
He is not a tough grader. Let me clear that up. Classes that are intro Math/Science will often have heavily biased reviews by students who did not show up to class/study/go to office hours. Even with so many students not showing up (and failing) and acting as statistical outliers, his test averages and class averages sat at perfect C's. Fun guy
He does NOT post the locations of exams. If you miss the week of classes before the exam, you do NOT have a way to get this information.
Overall great guy. There were students who disliked him at first. However, toward the end on the term, many realized that he wasn't a bad professor after all. DO NOT complete your online hw last minute, it's not worth it. Visit him at his office hours if necessary. His sense of humor keeps the class going. STUDY for all test with a group if can.
This professor is highly intelligent, however, he does posses a personality that could rub someone the wrong way. Depends on how the student responds to this, whether they find him funny or intimidating, they will vibe with him or not.
I am retaking this class because I did nothing and showed up only to the tests last time. I've learned that he's a great teacher who actually cares about the students and is a great person as well. Hands down the best prof at the university.
Uhhh not the best professor. I personally did not enjoy his lectures. Very good at wasting time. Would not recommend him but if you are an engineer you have to take him. If you took AP chemistry in high school then this class should be a breeze
For 201 he was absolutely awful, barely spent any time lecturing, went off on random tangents that had nothing to do with Chem, etc. However in 202 he is very engaged in the materials and is quite a great proffessor. In both terms there are frequent explosions because he likes them. Beware of the homework program, Aleks, its the actual worst.
Chris is one the best profs at OSU. Super funny but also cares about you. Go to his office hours, ask questions (even if they are dumb) and you'll pass.
Does his best to keep students interested in the course. The homework through Aleks is hard just start early. Cares very much for his students and wants them all to succeed.
Chris wants his students to succeed and no question is too stupid for him to answer. Do the Aleks homework early and you'll have no problem.
In lecture he's okay, they weren't very structured and it wasn't lecturing more just talking about things we should know. He includes lots of personal stories into lectures, which are funny, but you don't know what's important He's great out of class, very clear, very nice. His Wednesdays in the mole hole are great, go to them if you need it.
Has a good flow, wants to see you succeed
Fun and interactive. Likes engineers better
Only professor ive seen dab in class and try to say "weird flex" when responding to a student in lecture. Dude in the back of class quoted the syllabus on review day and became a class meme. Dont do that. Lectures can be hard to follow but very knowledgeable on subject material. Will always make lectures entertaining.
Chemistry was a very hard subject for me, but having Knutson is a big reason why I think I managed to get by the class with almost a B+. He teaches his content very well, is engaging and makes the 90 minute lectures go by fast. For incoming freshman engineering majors taking this class, you will not go wrong with this professor.
Good professor that knows his stuff. His lectures are cool and funny and he's a genuinely nice person (recommend getting to know him). He's extremely knowledgeable and what he doesn't' know he will google in the middle of class. We tried tripping him up with ice tsunamis, space travel, and plasma. Amazing labs in class to demonstrate point.
Amazing Prof
Do the homework! Always! And on-time! Aleks is hell but he doesn't nearly as many practice problems in class as he does chem history and jokes, so aside from starring certain problems in your notes that he warns will be on the tests, Aleks is your best bet for learning the course material. Aleks is also extremely time-consuming if you put it off.
Knutson is an interesting instructor to have and a great resource. He is very willing to answer questions and insures all of his students are on the same page. All of that combined with interesting demonstrations in lecture and an occasional witty comment. I would definitely recommend taking your chem series with him.
Really engaging professor. Homework was all on ALEKS, which is a frustrating program, but it works. The class is challenging because, as an introductory class, its alot of information delivered very rapidly over a short period of time. If you haven't got a strong chemistry foundation, be prepared to put in a lot of extra time.
Hilarious professor. Class grading is straight and to the point. Goes off-topic enough to keep it interesting, and is super competent with teaching us effectively.
Knutson is an amazing teacher. He makes content clear, easy to understand, andsomehowsuper interesting. Focus is on learning and growth, he definitely cares that you learn but he hates hearing about grades. Hard to get a bad grade, but you do have to do some work to get a good grade. Take his class if you can!
Will say poggers during class.
Knutson is a lot of fun and a pretty solid chemistry teacher. If you have no knowledge of chemistry going in, you might struggle a little but the class isn't terribly hard on account of the fact that the work is entirely through ALEKS. The lectures tell you everything you need to know, and they're usually pretty funny and full of cool stories.
The entire class is pretty much an online learning tool with lectures from him which was pretty boring. He also makes some pretty insensitive and unfunny "jokes" sometimes.
Missed my midterm due to technical reasons and he would not allow me to have a chance to take it which cause me to lose 10%
Knutson gives great informational lectures, and over zoom he's recording them and posting them so students can watch at their convenience. Homework and tests are entirely through ALEKS, making them super easy to pass. Not only that, the man is hilarious. Highly recommend.
This man somehow made chem enjoyable. I hate chem. Vibrant & energetic when teaching. Loves his students & cares about how he teaches. Often performs experiments mid lecture to help visualize what he was teaching. Super helpful when answering questions after class & would do his best to make sure you understood the content before he needed to leave
