my favorite prof this term!
Great class
Great Prof!!!
Smart is Sexy
Test are HARD. Great professor though, makes class interesting.
he's dreamy
Dry humor; keeps the class interested. Takes tests and papers VERY seriously!
looks good and you learn things
Worse prof i've had in 4 years of University
No Comments
I HAD HIM AT DOUGLAS COLLEGE, AND HE ROCKS!!!
Take GOOD notes. If you don't, you're screwed. He likes you to do the 'spit back'.

Funny dude
AWESOME INSTRUCTOR
Good for preparing you for your years to come
If you like to memorize and regurgitate... take his class and get a B
Great course. You are rewarded if you work hard and come to class.
What a babe.....too bad he is married.
tough but fair, if you're looking for a challenge, for engaging discussions, and perhaps for a place to vent your grievances with air canada, where they will be validated by an empathetic ear, then take any class this prof has to offer.
If you're looking for easy GLER marks, look elsewhere. If you're looking for an interesting and knowledgable professor that has a great rapport with his students, he's your guy. Note to fellow science majors: This course involves a thing called a "term paper", if you cannot write, you're doomed.
Great class to take, though not if you don't like showing up for class or particpating in discussions. Definitely a course to take!
I may be a little biased because I love polisci, but this guy is a great prof. Very engaging and animated, "interesting" sense of humor which is handy cuz some of the topics are rather dry. Encourages open debate, easy to take notes from (although his writing is generally illegible) and pounceable.
Kind of a gym teacher stuck in a poli. sci. world, but a pretty good prof. He's a hard marker, but fair about it. Doesn't take attendance, but if he doesn't know your name to your face by the end of the semester, it'll show on your mark.
Damn good proff. Very knowledgeable yet keeps his opinions out of the lecture material. Always willing to answer questions after class or in e-mails. I'd take a class with him again in a second. Read ahead, show up for every class, and write down everything he says though. You can't afford to slack.
Very good professor. A lot of note to take but they are helpful. A very hard marker on term papers, but he will only give an A to a really good paper but that's a good thing. You can still get an A even if you get a B- on the paper. A very objective prof. Tells you both sides of the story. A+ prof.
Well he is a wonderful Prof. he just needs to slow his writing down, if your not fast at writing then get a tape recorder, he is worth the money. Class is great to go to, he makes politics seem interesting, which it is but all the -isms, thats dry and he really helps make it seem easier
Incredible Prof. Knows his stuff, fair, objective, but you have to work for your mark. Take his course to hear both sides of everything, and learn a lot!
He is a guy who knows what he is talking about. To do well in his class write EVERYTHING down, and you wont even have to read the textbook. Exams can be difficult but exam questions are predictable, but must know everything of that subject. He also brings up valid points from both sides. Can be a hard class, but a good mark is NOT impossible.
I took Chris at Douglas and his teaching and grading made doing my BA easy, and prepared me well for my MA. Learn from him, I wish all my profs had been like Chris. :)
He is a really good prof! You really have to know your stuff for the tests, but he does mark fair, and he warns you of what's on it. Beware for the research paper...he's a tough but fair marker. Most definately recommonded!
great prof. hard and a little arrogant but it is because he is brilliant and really knows what he is talking about. expects the best from you but also gives the skills to achive it. great lecturs and easy to follow.
He is amazing! he makes politics seem so interesting. The tests are hard, but if you are a good memorizer and listen to the not-so-subtle hints that he gives in class, his tests aren't bad at all. Just a word of caution, the research paper is difficult! Don't take his classes if you're just looking for a GPA booster!
Great explanation of topics. You have to show up for his classes since the tests are taken entirely from lectures. Hard tests, you have to memorize like mad, but you'll know exactly what's gonna be on there.
Solid professor. Lectures are very engaging, and he is clear and concise on what he expects. Skip class out your own peril because he emphasizes what's discussed in class on exams. Learned how to write a solid research paper from him, particularly on how to reference properly. He devoted a lot of time to this, but I'm grateful that he did
He gives interesting lectures and is passionate about the subject matter. Tests are EXTREMELY hard (write 2 essays in 50 minutes) but he leaves you well-prepared for them. When I approached him for help he came across as condescending. I didn't enjoy this class, possibly I was not prepared to work hard enough
Kukucha is my favorite prof at the university. He will challenge you and make you think so be ready to work but in return you will be exposed to a wealth of knowledge and walk out a much better student than you walked in. He rewards effort so make an attempt to speak up and feel free to see him outside of class.
Great teacher, knows what he is talking about, very clear and precise. NOT EASY, lots of notes each class so be there. Know every word of the notes for tests.Text is useless, he basically goes over each chapter in the notes. Term paper is ruthless, 95% of my class got a C, start it right when assigned! Thumbs up though, prepares you well for uni.
He is brutal, condescending, and completely out of line in his expectations. He asks the broadest questions but than treats you like an idiot when you dont answer word for word what he wants. Very hard marker and doesn't scale... be prepared to be a top student with a B average! He is very tough! I hated this class!
This prof is amazing! He knows his stuff, explains everything, is willing to address questions and also has respect for every individual student. Makes tons of jokes, class is interesting! HIGHLY recommend him.
I really liked Chris as a professor. I am taking more classes from him next semester. His 1000 class was not easy, but he pays attention to how much work you put in and rewards you (or not) for it. You can do well if you work really hard.
Previous comment was impolite and inaccurate in most respects. He can come across as condescending, but if you demonstrate that you are not a complete oaf he will give you the respect you deserve. This class IS very hard, and requires a lot of work. But, put in that work and you WILL be rewarded. DO NOT SKIP CLASS. READ THE ARTICLES. TALK to him.

Kukucha isn't easy, and what people have been saying about preparing for alot of memorization and prep for the essay is completely true. I hated his exams, they were more a test on how fast you could regurgitate....that being said I loved his lectures and the material!
He expects a lot from his students, but is by no means unfair. His tests are mainly marking how fast you can write, but he makes sure you know what to study for them. Don't miss the lectures, study, LISTEN, and you'll be fine. He's a great teacher.
engaging lectures. For first and second year courses his test questions are simply recollection of terms/concepts, so if time is taken to remember the ones one the study guide/emphasized in class, good marks are possible. Marks papers hard though.
far and away the best prof i've ever had. he's totally clear about what he expects, which is a lot, but the classes are so good you want to put in the work. switched my major to poli sci after taking 1000 with him
Awesome.
Is this class difficult? Absolutely. Is this class enriching? Absolutely. Is this class unfair? Not at all. Dr. Kukucha is extremely helpful and has pushed me to become a better writer and to analyze politics in a way I never did before. Yes, his criticism is harsh but when you really listen to what he has to say, you'll see that its totally right.
Engaging lecturer with interesting material. However, his expectations are WAY too high for a second-year class. Not enough time on tests, and 4th year expectations for papers. Not consistent with other PoliSci/Social Sc./Humanities profs. Didn't seem thrilled to be teaching either. Smart and interesting guy, but difficult class.
He has certainly mellowed out after his sabbatical. Attend every lecture, his classes are completely lecture driven. Lots of memorization and writing till it hurts for his essays. Totally worth it if you're looking for a university level education.
He has very clear lecture notes, is interesting and knows what he is talking about. However, he is very arrogant and condescending when students approach him and he makes students feel subordinate. Even though he is a good teacher i would not take another class from him
Best Prof at the U of L
He's clear with content and expectations and although he marks very hard, it's rare to be surprised by what he grades you.
There's a reason Chris is inspiring to most poli sci majors. He's brutally honest but incredibly intelligent. He tells you EXACTLY what he expects of you. It's impossible to be surprised by your mark. If your hand isn't numb at the end of an exam you didn't write enough and won't do well. Manage your time accordingly on exams!!!!
He's an awesome prof, charismatic and knows what he is talking about. has a sense of humor also, I'd recommend his class to anyone and everyone.
Chris is the best prof I have ever had. I have 2 degree's and he literally changed the way I approach research and hard work. He breaks it down into steps that make it easy to excel in the world. I have graduated now and owe a lot to him. If you are there to learn how to learn then there is no better at the UofL. He is the real deal folks.
I took this course knowing it wouldn't apply to my degree, but I am so glad I did. I learned more from Chris in the span of 2 months since I've been here. He is a great guy to learn from. Definitely challenges you to think, and not to just regurgitate facts etc. I would recommend his class to anyone anytime.
Chris is an amazing prof. As a first year Poli Sci major he encouraged me in my degree. His classes are interesting and contain tons of info for the tests so make sure you attend! He includes at least one essay a class but don't be scared by it! He's very understanding about it and willing to help you.
He's arrogant, politically biased, intellegent and interesting. A great teacher if you can get over the the aforementioned arrogance and bias. He expects a lot from his students, and marks tough accordingly. He's very knowledgable and you'll learn a lot in his class, just be prepared to attend lectures and write, write, write.
Total hardass, arrogent, biased, extremely tough marker. However, he makes it very clear what to expect on the exams and the research paper. If you can get past that, I'm sure he's an extremely good prof, but for me...not so much to put it nicely. Attend class, write notes, work hard, and you'll do average.
Be wary of all the rave reviews on here! Kukucha is a brutal marker, and said flat out the average in his class would likely be a C. The class average on the midterm was 12/20... That being said, he is an inspiring teacher, definitely knows what he's talking about--scary intelligent. Be prepared to be made fun of in his class.
The worst proffessor at the University of Lethbridge that I have ever had the misfortune of experiencing. Incredibly harsh on first year students, but doesn't give you any advice on how to better yourself; he just expects you to get better without any help. Brutal marker, politically biased, and overall a completely horrible experience.
A horrible professor and a horrible person in general. Avoid Kukucha at all costs. He essentially destroyed whatever hope I had of doing anything at all with the Political Science department at the U of L.
Last two posters are clearly first year students who didn't listen to Chris. Work hard, and I mean very very hard and you will do average in his class (C+ to B range). This isn't for people who just want a GLER, but for people who actually want to get into Poli Sci, or really enjoy the area. Great Prof who tells you everything and knows everything.
Chris is intense. I walked out of almost every class feeling like an idiot, but I really learned how to budget my time. Is he a bit of a jerk? Maybe. Is his class hard? Absolutely. But if you work hard, you CAN do well.
Amazing class. It's impossible not to learn anything in his class. He's hilarious and extremely engaging. I adore this prof and it's not a proper semester without a class from him.
Interesting lectures, very engaging. Tough marker
A horrible, horrible man. Oh sure, he tells you EXACTLY what he wants at the start of the semester, but good luck trying to please him! Do NOT take this as a GLER, you'll only do yourself harm. If you're a first year, forget it, avoid him. This class is not for the weak, be prepared to WORK YOUR ASS OFF for a mark of like, a B...at best.
Not for the faint of heart. First years beware - he is an incredibly brutal marker and never gives marks higher than a B+. If you do take this class, be prepared to work your ass off. However, if you're interested in poli sci as a major, he's definitely the guy to go to...YOU ARE NOT PREPARED!
To summarize in one word: Brutal or unforgiving. Not recommended if you're a first year or if you're taking it as a GLER. You'll probably want to wait until you're at least a second year so that you can handle his harsh marking and tests. Very tough prof to say the least.
In my experience, you either love him or hate him. Yeah he knows his stuff and rah rah rah, but man is he brutal! You have to seriously work your butt off to get a half-decent mark with this guy. Honestly, if you're a first year, you probably want to stay away from him. After you get used to university in general, he's a bit easier to handle.
Very smart prof who knows what he is talking about. If you do not go to lectures do not expect anything higher than a C. Tests are all bases on lecture notes and you need to take good notes. He is a hard marker, but if you work hard you can do well in his class. I reccomend taking his class if you are a serious poli sci student.
Overall a great guy. He expects you to be deligent in your class attendance, note taking and writing. First years, if you take this class be very proactive in your note taking, assignments and study, study, study. If you attend daily, and speak up in class you should do fine. He is a very valuable friend to have for future Poli sci classes.
Chris held the most interesting class I have ever had, however he is a very tough marker, you must go to his class every day and take down everything he sais. He lets you know exactly what is on the exams and how he likes his essays, but if not done right, you will get a bad mark
Chris is awesome! He acts like he hates everything, but he is very funny and entertaining. He tells you exactly what he wants for exams and papers. Take notes word for word what he says and write them word for word in his tests and you'll do great. He acts hard, but he really isn't! I can't wait to take POLI2110 with him!
Chris is tough, however he is SO fair. If you are fresh out of high school this may be a challenge for you, just because you don't understand what a university prof is looking for yet. That being said, I recommend everyone to take a class with him. Best prof thus far, and best classes to date!
His class is the most interesting class I've ever had. He's a very difficult marker but he'll make you fall in love with Politics, he's socializing us to love it.
Amazing prof! Yes he can be difficult to adjust to if you're fresh out of high school, but he knows exactly what he's talking about and covers everything. If you regularly attend classes and take good notes you will be fine. He will tell you exactly what will be on the midterm and final. He's a hard marker, but it's only so you learn! Love him!
Chris is not an easy teacher and he will tell you that from the start but he is extremely interesting to listen to and was the reason I changed my major to political science. It is important to attend class as test are based straight from his lecture. Essay is long but not too hard he's a stickler for style though.
Chris is an excellent teacher. His International Relations class is very well taught. I learned so much. I did not find him overly helpful, but I think that is because he wants you to be accountable and doesn't want to hold anyone's hand through the course. The course is not difficult, but the paper is a lot of work. highly recommend.
You are paying to get an education. You owe it to yourself to take a class with the ace of spades- AKA Christopher Kukucha
Chris is a great prof, his film and int'l relations class is really a lot of fun. He's got some pretty strong opinions, and can be resistant to other points of view.
Challenging class, but by far a favorite! He will tell you that you will write past the point of your hand hurting and it's true. One major paper and two essay exams. A tough marker w/ very clear expectations. Attendance is a must. Not an easy A. Don't bother buying the textbook. Highly recommend his classes!
Very difficult course but a great prof. He tells you every question that will be on the midterm and the final, but it is entirely lecture based and you need to write every word he says in lectures. Attendance is essential, but don't bother with the textbook. Not an easy A but you do well if you try. Very interesting class and a great, funny prof.
This Prof is tough. Awesome guy, very clear on expectations and tells you what is on the exams. Exactly what is on it. His essays and tests are by no means easy. He's engaging and funny, but doesn't baby you. Highly recommend if you want to learn and work. Not an easy GPA booster though. Prof is one of the best at the Uni!
Hard marker but if you put the time and effort into it you will be fine. DONT GET THE TEXTBOOK
Hardest class I took, but I loved his lectures and he was very clear on his expectations, they were just very high.
Chris is great. Best prof at the UofL. He's difficult and will make you WORK. But his classes are well worth it. I've taken every one of his classes and am a better thinker for it. Take his class- if you're willing to work for your grade, you won't regret it.
I took this course with Chris 3 years ago in my first year... The class was immensely interesting. It was a TON of work though, and yes, Chris was very very hard, and honestly, I strongly disliked him during the course. But he got me working and thinking...and now, 3 years later, I'd say he's one of the best profs I've had.
Chris is brilliant! If you can, take a course with him. It will be a lot of work, but worth it! He is a total babe too. Smart is sexy!
Easily one of the best classes I have ever taken. It's no walk in the park, so take notes and pay attention. If you are an engaged student you'll do fine. This class is very relevant to everyday life and I would highly recommend taking it with Chris!!
Professor Kukucha is fantastic at what he does. Sometimes he makes comments that will intimidate you, and the workload is not for the faint of heart. I feel I have learned more from kukucha in 4 months than in many of my other university courses. If you're willing to put in the effort he is fair. Easy presentation and participation marks.
Chris is OUTSTANDING. He is extremely funny and loves to get a rise out of his students. He is the most engaging prof. in the faculty, for sure. He is not an easy prof. however. You need to show up and you need to take notes. HINT: The textbook's footnotes are excellent sources for your term paper(and he doesn't mind you using them).
Kukucha is very straightforward when you start his class. Lectures are a must or else you will suffer during exams, papers are marked tough but fair. You will honestly get the most out of his class. I found studying for exams easy as I was forced to take notes in class and was easily reminded of everything he said. Great prof.
Hands down, the best professor in the department. Tests and the essay were hard but fair. He gives time for current events, enjoys class discussion, and welcomes opinions, as long as you not a complete idiot when partaking in discussions.
Midterm and final are incredibly difficult!
It's clear as of the first class that if you do not show up there is no way you will pass the course. Tests are fair, and the essay was given with more than enough time to complete. As well, Chris gave us writing workshops that were extremely useful. This class was well rounded and introduced a variety of political science. Thoroughly enjoyable.
do not buy textbook he never uses it! class notes are everything in this class, you need to listen and read his sloppy writing to understand what is going on. Nothing is posted or used on Moodle (he's anti-technology). Wiki most things he talks about as he goes fast and has no time for depth.
He posts nothing online so you have to attend the lectures and take very specific notes because everything he writes on the board is so messy you cannot read it. The lectures are very well presented so it is easy to keep your attention, and make sure to ask questions if confused because he will answer them very clearly.
Midterm and final are incredibly difficult. He asked for a 25 page essay for the final exam, the unreasonable length was never mentioned in the syllabus. He graded our term papers on a rubric that he didn't even give us. On top off all that he spent several classes complaining that his 6 figure income isn't enough. Wouldn't take another class.
Decent prof, but he can be intimidating at first. Never uses the textbook. You have to really pay attention to the lectures and what he says because he goes through things fast. Make sure not to skip class.
He does go over things really fast, and his writing is messy but everything he says makes sense, and if you understand what he taught the tests are super easy. DO NOT MISS ONE DAY. He is also willing to give any extra help and is super nice
He makes class a lot more appealing. He does lecture lots but he makes it interesting and fun with the odd joke added in.
Chris is a great prof and knows his material inside out. You have to work for your mark in this class because you get what you put in. He genuinely wants you to succeed in his class and is willing to help you if you need the help. Chris is also very clear in what he is looking for when it comes to assignments and exams.
Kukucha is an amazing prof. He is very straightforward and provides some really great lectures. He has a great sense of humour and takes the time to break down every bit of content. The first 15 minutes of every Friday are dedicated to a current events discussion which is great. DO NOT BUY THE TEXTBOOK!! Tests are based 100% on lectures.
Hands down, the best prof I've ever had. He explains things clearly in his lectures, and he is very transparent in regards to what he expects. Tests are fairly straight forward, if you study and show up, you won't have an issue with his tests. If you need help he is also very willing to give it, and his advice is also very helpful.
Prof. Kukutcha is a fair prof. His classes are interesting, and he does encourage participation. Beware of his finals though, if you do not like writing, you will not do well. Do the readings for class, it make things go smoother, and he asks good probing questions. And try to get across to the other side of the coulee.
Great prof who obviously knows his stuff and wants you to grow as a student in his courses. "Quizzes" were actually midterms and the "final exam" was actually a term paper, but if you go to class and take notes, he gives you all the answers you need. POLI3750 was the most memorable course I've taken at any university.
If you are thinking of taking Intro to Poli Sci or International Relations, then he's the one. He's really straight forward with what he expects from the students and gives really interesting lectures. He's such a great proffessor...
If you are not a Poli Sci major do not take a course with him unless it is a 1000 course!!!!!! His tests are purposely built in such a way that most students won't do well on them. His expectations and grading scheme for tests and papers are unbelievably unreasonable, and he pretty much tells students that he does not care whether they can keep up.
Taking this course would not have been the same without him; he was clear about the material and what had to been known for the exams. Beware however that his lectures can become confusing with all of the information that he is pumping out within the 50 minute span. Also, DON'T BUY THE TEXTBOOK! He only uses material from lectures on his exams.
Chris is one of my favourite Poli Sci professors I have ever had. He is personable and makes lectures interesting. That does not mean his classes are necessarily easy but he is a fair marker and is there to help if you need it. Very understanding guy and will help if you ask. Very knowledgable in his field. Highly recommend taking a class with him.
Very smart, knows his stuff but if you ask for help about something he already explained in class, prepare for a rant about personal responsibility.
You have to show up to class, as he does not post slides. WARNING: 15% is participation so show up and take good notes and engage (he notices).
Kukucha is the best political science professor Ive had. Ive taken Intro and IR with him. Hes a really fair grader and teaches in an unbias way. He does 2-3 lecture days on how to write a graduate level paper. So when I took my 2nd class, IR with him, I ended with an A+. The writing skills have carried to my other classes! Just show up tbh
Kukucha is amazing! His tests are easy because he believes that MC should just be, "do you know the content?" and there are no trick questions. His term papers are difficult and he marked us as if we were 4th year students. However, he spent 2 classes teaching us on how to write a university paper (citations, etc). It helped me ace other classes :)
Kukucha is hilarious. The term paper was difficult, however, he is available for advice and is willing to look over it. I got an A+ on the paper, final, and midterm. The tests were easy and he just wants to know if students know the basic concepts (no trick questions). He does state that C's are the average for the class bc the paper is heavy.
Although this class wasn't super easy, Professor Kukucha is a good prof. He makes you work for your mark and is a tough grader, but can be easily accessed out of class if you need extra help. It is a pretty lecture heavy class, but if you take good notes and put in the effort, you'll do fine.
Meh. He seems bored and unengaged during most lectures. We are all tired of zoom, we all are in the same boat.... we also don't pay to listen to instructors complain about not being able to do research. Nice enough guy (mostly)!! VERY SMART!! Just seems like he can't really be "bothered" with first/second-year courses. Does seem willing to help!
Dr. Kukucha is great when we aren't in a pandemic. He complains a lot about online schooling and not being able to do research. However in person the classes are great. Also, the textbooks he uses are great. He wrote the ones I have used in many classes and they have all been top notch.
lectures are amazing great outline for exams (literally tells you which lecture to find what from) precise when marking papers but gives a fair grade final exam 35% of our grade
Chris is a fair professor, and genuinely wants his students to succeed. If you are not someone who shows up to class every time do not take his classes. You need to be a thorough note taker to succeed on his exams.
I genuinely thoroughly enjoyed this class, Chris really cares about what he talks about it. never boring. GO TO CLASS - the entire test is just on things he has said so take notes! A 10-page research essay but he literally goes through it with the entire class. Really not a difficult class if you just show up and pay attention. Not too heavy.
He was a very good professor. You need to attend class, take good notes and pay attention, but if you did you would do well. He teaches you everything you need to know to succeed in the class, so if you make note of the things he tells you will be on exams and follow his instructions for how to write a paper then you will do fantastic.
An excellent and knowledgeable prof. Attending class and taking notes is crucial for success. Be prepared to write, and write a lot! The instructions the term paper and take-home exams are a little vague, especially when it comes to the expectations, but he is willing to meet to answer questions. Overall, a very interesting and worthwhile class!
He is a good professor, my grade for a C is my fault, I did not like reading at all. But I can tell you he is a nice professor, but there's one thing that makes him different from a lot of professors. It's that he doesn't post notes online or anything else except for your grade for a test or exam.
Profs lectures are engaging and informative. Attendance is a must - take good notes and stay off your phone. unstuckstudy and the free textbook make studying a breeze. Challenging but doable if you put in the work.
He is a bit discouraging and doesn't really care if you show up or don't as nothing is posted on moodle HOWEVER, he is clear and repeats stuff that will be on the exam and is very clear about it. His motto is that 90% of your success will come for just showing up and if you do and take good lecture notes you will do just fine in this class
Unnecessarily condescending towards students and doesn't recognize it, constantly bringing down the class. No lecture slides and everything he says needs to be written down and he doesn't allow audio recording of the lectures. Weirdly concerned about possible SA allegations from students and does not allow students alone during office hours.
Pretty great professor, to do well in his class you simply need to learn how to write notes that you can understand and show up to all classes.
Honestly very fair in what he expects, as long as you come to class and take good lectures notes, youll be good :)
Teaches intro corse at level higher than curriculum, which is fine if you're headed into Political Sciences. Avoid avoid avoid if your major is anything else and youre looking for credits. Not sympathetic to students' busy schedule, huge homework piles, and expects his course to be your priority.
Relatable teacher with good beliefs, but his exams were so short they were difficult to score a good grade (iykwim). Never really discussed about what might be on exams. His instructions are clear, but he is a HARD marker, almost as if I'm headed to nursing school. If you want to know the grim reaper of GPAs, he is, but a little more merciful..
Class was very informative, but a little dry at times. Paper was quite difficult, and exams tended to include small details that didn't seem important.
