Dr. Kvaal is very nice given the time he spent in Iowa, although on the pipetteman scale he would be much closer to a p10 than a p5000.
He has a hard time coming down to the student level when teaching and seems cocky at times.
He is a very smart man when it comes to Genetics. It's just too bad he can not dumb it down for the students. He knows his stuff very well, but just can not communicate that down to the student level. Its a shame because he is a nice guy too.
As said in other comments, Kvaal is a smart guy - you just wouldn't know it from his class. He makes some pretty dumb mistakes, like setting the centrifuge too high and shattering test tubes full of blood. Lets hope his lecture gets better with practice

He knows what he is talking about, just doesn't know how to teach it. Our first test is on 150 pages, Chapters 1-7. The study guide that he gave us was not helpful at all. You use clickers in class to answer questions, always uses powerpoint for class.
He was my first teacher for Bio, sometiems he ws very boring, but ok. He makes connections sometimes, but they arent always the most clear. He is somewhat short with students. Be in every class, attendance is VERY NECESSARY---you have to click in with a remote.
He is smart but need public speaking course. He stammers a lot. He is a learned man, but fail to teach others. If he improves his speaking like Matt Julius (do not follow other stuff), he'll be the boss of the boss.
Very intelligent teacher. Very helpful inside as well as outside of the class.
He was a good prof. Talked a little fast sometimes but used good analogies. Was willing to help. The notes he gives arent very helpful you have to read the book and teach yourself. There is unannounced quizzes that should be easy if you do the readings.
He is a good guy and loves what he does, but is scatter-brained and his lectures are difficult to follow. He goes off on random tangents and isn't well prepared for labs. If you take this class with him, make sure you have patience and a good sense of humor as a lot of mistakes will occur.
Lectures were scattered, unclear, and confusing. Doesn't quite understand that some students coming into BIO 151 have very little previous knowledge, if any, of the class content. You have to read the book and teach yourself.
Does not know how to teach.Very biased in grading. If you decided to take his class, always be ready to accept the unexpected.Try to be smart enough to laugh along with him even though his jokes are not funny. Best thing..try not to get into his class...otherwise you would be helpless.
He focuses too much on his power points and not enough on the students.

He is a nice guy, but hard to follow. If you REALLY pay attention you can usually decipher what he is trying to say. He is a lot less scatterbrained out of class, so if you have a question or need help, go to him in his office.
Worst Professor ever! Cant even spell communicate let alone express it. Never answered emails, and never cared.
He is actually very nice and helpful. I did better on my exam for his lecture than Tubbiola and Julius. He is very approachable.
really nice out of class but once in class it did not seem like he was very organized at all
I think most people are basing their reviews on the 151 class, of which he only teaches 1/3. I'm in his BIOL 262 Genetics class and he teaches just fine. He ties everything together well, and makes sure everyone is getting what he is saying in lecture before he moves on. He even let me take the class as a co-requisite with CHEM 210. I like him.
Dr. Kvaal is not a good teacher at all. He is very arrogant and comes across as if he knows everything and you should too! The class averaged 58+60% on the first two exams. The questions on the tests are trick questions!
he is terible
I found Kvall to be very helpful, especially since he posts everything on D2L and provides many resources in and out of class to help a student to understand the course material. Many complain about this class, but this is as easy as it's going to get, and if you're going into anything related to Biology, you'll have to deal.
Very arrogant professor. Will not answer any questions that are asked. He responds with you can find the answer yourself. Tests are extremely difficult even if you study. The questions are not straight forward answers they are more critical thinking answers. Expects everyone in his class to already be well educated in biology. Would not recommend
Has trouble getting across clear and complete thoughts during lecture. Seems to not want to even try to assist students who ask for help. Wants students to find all their own answers, only it is his job and he is being paid to assist students in learning. Overall, he is a bad teacher! I recommend taking this class with another instructor.
refuses to answer questions, quiz's online =same as book website, in-class quiz rarely relate to material, exam class average is below 50 percent. exam questions cover material skipped in lecture. he dosen't say complete sentences and or thoughts. very hard to follow. he has been corrected by students in class.
He was a very hard teacher. His tests are hard if you don't read the book. He made us buy a "clicker" for 40 bucks that was of no use to the class, in my opinion.
This teacher was really hard. Lecture is extremely boring, and the tests are unbelievibly hard. We bought a pointless clicker thing that didn't help at all. He is the only teacher for this course...
OMG HE is extremely hard! go to class ALL THE TME! and read! If you want to pass you gotta make his class YOUR LIFE! he uses this analogy that most students don't get! To pass you really gotta study everyday!
Kvall is an allright prof. Sometimes the lectures are slightly boring, but they are helpful for the exams. If you put in the effort, come to class, and study you will do fine. (The clickers were actually useful because at the end of the semester he adds participation points to the grade) Exams are difficult so be sure to study!
As another student wrote...this class will be your life. I did nothing be eat, sleep, and breath this class just to get an "A"! He's very passionate for the topic but talks over your head. I'm a non-trad student who works hard for my grades and this class kicked my butt!! I walked away with a new outlook on critical thinking! Very, Very, tough!
This class was extremely hard! Tests are unbelievable..I would read though the chapters each day and go over my notes and study prior to tests and stayed up hours of the night before each test and the tests still kicked my butt. HARD class...you must go to class...but even I found out that doesn't even help matters when it comes to the tests :/
He's really easy to understand and covers things well in class.
Not helful at all. Lectures are really confusing and you need a twisted mind to understand what he is trying to say. The tests are SUPER hard and doesnt give you a study guide. Never answers emails and always complains that he gets to many emails.Would not recommend this teacher TO NOBODY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
very good, easy to understand. go to class and pay attention! go over the power points and i recommend purchasing the study guide, it really helped me. he's good at letting you know what to study for and what's important. very good experience in that class, he was my favorite professor this semester.
he sucks. terrible at teaching, even going to class doesnt help. barely anything on the powerpoints are actually on the tests. if you have him the only advice i have is to drop the class as soon as you can.
Want to feel bad about yourself, just ask this guy a question. He can simultaneously blow you off and make you feel stupid.
I used to think it did not matter where you went to college and chose the least expensive option for me. Dr. Kvaal has truly taught me that you get what you pay for.
has slides from the book but they are hard to follow with his method of teaching...strongly recomend that you read the text before showing up to class so you can follow along
AWFUL. Honestly I feel bad for any Bio 151 students. You literally have no choice but to take Bio 151 with Kvaal, there are no other teachers. It took me two times to finally pass this class and I am a 3.0 student. If he says something wont be on the test in class, it's a trick, it WILL be. STUDY EVERYTHING!!!!!
HARDEST CLASS OF MY LIFE!!!i dropped and and am taking it else where.i studied for 5HOURS for one test and got a 40% this guy needs to loosen up and take into consideration that we are not all as smart as he is.DO NOT TAKE IT HERE!!
Not too hard. Pay attention in class and take notes and you should be fine. Lab is hard though so make sure you're good at writing lab reports.
i got a C, but i didn't study as much. some of the tests are crazy and tricky, but otherwise it's not so bad. labs suck though.
He is the worst prof ever!! Dont take him if you dont have to!!!
Kvall teaches off of power point slides which is helpful but he constantly jumps around so its hard to understand what he's trying to say and write down important details. Print off the notes from d2l.. it'll help
I thought He was a great professor. He teaches off of powerpoint slides which makes it easy. As far as the test's go they are hard, but study. A LOT (i mean ALOT) of the test questions are on the textbooks website. The textbooks website definately helps with studying. Don't buy the book. complete waste of money!
Kvaal is the worst bio teacher ever, he thinks he knows all and he thinks hes funny but hes not, and he teaches off of powerpoint which most of the stuff isnt on the tests, tests have trick questions, he jumps around from subject to subject, and makes no sense, he only has four outfits he wears too( not like that matters) but he only wears corderoy
If you study for every test and print off the D2L Powerpoint notes before each class and take notes and use your clicker, you should do just fine. He is an ok teacher and I would take him again.
Great teacher! Is very very hard, but wants you to learn as much as possible. His tests are really hard and sometimes tricky. If you have problems he is very helpful and is willing to work with you. Some test questions are found on the books website.
Great teacher. Knows how to teach. Clicker needed for the class and the use of clicker helps a great deal for the exams. Tests are easy and study guide is provided. Lowest scoring exam is dropped, so u have some sort of cushion.
Hated every minute. His tests are little biology and more philosophy. Worst fashion style, ugly, and not smart. your best bet is getting an A in lab.
After putting up with this guy all semester, I now walk funny after getting my grade.
One of the worst I have ever had. I feel sorry for people coming in who don't know much about bio. If I didn't have a strong bio background, I would have failed. Doesn't let you see your tests (which are ridiculous and repeat one question four times) once they are graded. He gives wrong information and doesn't correct himself or let you correct him
Kvall is BY FAR the worst biology teacher I have ever had. Everytime I came to him with questions he told me "I give my students the tools they need to succeed." Once borrowed some of his water for research (which his grad student gave me) and he marched into the lab and screamed at me for about 5 minutes. However you cant avoid him, so good luck:)
Kvaal just wants you to learn. You whiners who say he's not there to help you, or that the powerpoint isn't the best, or the tests are not directed-- daahhh! You whine!
This professor does all that he can to try and help you succeed. If you put in the time after class, you will do amazing no questions asked. He explains things on your level and make sure everyone can understand the whole big picture of everything.
I really like the class but half the stuff that's on the test Dr. Kvaal doesn't cover or even mention to look over.
Very smug.
Kvaal is very good at making this subject understandable. His tests are hard because there is alot of critical thinking questions. If you read the book and actaully understand things instead of just memorizing them you will do fine.
very vague and quite confusing, but a nice guy... just a not so great facilitator
A very laid-back guy. Sometimes he tends to stray off subject in lectures, but on material related to the course. Exams are pretty straightforward. Make sure you keep up in lab, it's an easy way to bump your grade up.
labs are extremely time consuming and pointless. lecture is long and boring. but if you go to class and take good notes, you should be alright. study the end of ch. Q's for tests, answers to all are online. he pulls a few from there. lab is worth almost half your grade, so take it serious. lets you throw out lowest test score. dont waste it.
He's alright, just not very interesting and is too interested in 'learning objectives' instead of the actual class material.
Kvaal is an inconsiderate professor. I had an emergency surgery fall of 2008 and he did not care and I missed out on quiz point with no chance of making them up. He is very full of himself and likes to act like he knows it all. Tests are based from the book, and lab is boring and pointless. He thinks that everyone is less than him. AVOID!!!!!!!
His tests are impossible and he expects you to commit your life to his class. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!
Professor Kvaal is a very smart professor but has a hard time teaching freshman. His interests are more in line with his 300 and 400 level classes. His personality takes some getting used to but if you get past that he's a wonderful professor. I would highly recommend him for higher level classes an research. Freshman, be cautious.
He does not answer questions clearly. The notes given in class are not very useful on the test. Very annoying and arrogant man.
I think most of the negative comments are from freshmen who have never taken a college science class before. College level biology is a hard subject, Kvall does a great job teaching. He drops your lowest test score AND he curves the tests, which are much easier then in BIO 152. If you go to class and use his study guides, its easy to get an A
Worthless professor. Started the semester by stating how much money he has made the university through his work... that right there shows his devotion to actual teaching
Dr. Kvaal would rather not teach a freshman level biology class; it's quite obvious. However, he is relatively easy that allows you to drop an exam. This guy is probably a better prof for higher level bio classes.
Gave me a B instead of the A I earned because I called hom on a mistake!!!!! Tries to confuse students by giving them different due dates and then says too bad!! Took him over 3 months to grade a 200 word essay!! Shouldn't be teaching and I've gotten A's in his classes!!
Dropped grade because I called him on the fact that he is an idiot!!! Just had to say it!! Takes months to grade a paragraph, not joking! And will lower ur grade if you point out his mistakes!!! Had the exact same answers as others in class and got a whole letter grade lower b/c I pointed out that he is a MORON !!!!!!!!!!!!
He doesn't give his students a good idea of what he'll be testing on and likes using tricky questions on his tests. He is a little full of himself and he is not helpful when approached outside of class. Will knock your grade down if you point out any of his mistakes
I'm not sure this man even knows what he's talking about. In lecture he had a tendency to contradict himself on several occasions which resulted in several confused students. The tests are usually pretty hard, my best advice is to read the textbook several times and try to understand the concepts before Dr. Kvaal confuses you in class.
not as bad as everyone really says. I hate CPR though (grading other peoples essays). Tests can be hard (ave. like 80%), but they were pretty easy for me.
Tests are really not hard if you go to class, pay attention, and study the power point notes. Labs kinda sucked but also weren't hard. I really don't get why so many people do poorly on tests or think the class is hard - it's really not! Kvaal isn't very helpful though if you try to ask him about stuff - I found him very unapproachable.
took online class for generals. class was just a 20 point quiz every week or two on a chapter of the book. Syllabus was crystal clear.
Honestly, reading the book will help you in this class. His lectures are just to guide you. Tests are hard if you don't go to class.
DO NOT TAKE HIM, unless you want to fail. He is nice, but there are quite a few times the information he tells you is wrong or vise versus.
I thought he was a great teacher. The class was well organized. If you read the book, go to lecture, and write down the metaphors he gives, the tests should be pretty easy for you. I think people assume 100-level classes are going to be easy A's and that's why they complain. If you do the work and study you'll be fine.
Biology material is not difficult to learn, you need to spend time studying. Lab is not difficult, but you have to spend a lot of time on lab reports, group projects, etc. Professor is incredibly boring in lecture, skips around on powerpoint slides and is very uninterested in teaching this class.
teaches biology very will and knows what he is talking about
not the best teacher...not very considerate..and not helpful...i learn't all i need to know from the text book
One of the worst teachers I have had so far. Helpfulness-none whatsoever. Is extremely arrogant and unapproachable. If you read the ridiculously heavy book with 59 chapters (we only used 18) then you will pass A ok. Plan on the exams consuming your life.
Doesn't respond to emails, class was a complete waste of time, I learned nothing, we watched videos from "Monsters Inside Me" from Animal Planet instead of learning anything from the book, and for an online course, we had to snail mail our assignments because he's afraid everyone cheats
For a lecture hall class not terribly boring. However the teacher is 100% useless to try and even ask a simple question whether after class or e-mail. Doesn't care about students at all. Very confusing and not clear on the few assignments he gives. Would not recommend, ever. Teachers should care about students and not just ignore them.
Dr. Kvaal was a good (though socially awkward) professor. I felt he was very informative in his lectures, and did his best to convey concepts in ways to help students understand. He is NOT an easy professor, but if you actually work and pay attention, it's easy. He seems unapproachable, but that is due more to social deficits than bad temperament.
CPR in this class is a joke, half of the people don't even bother doing it so most of the time only one person graded my essay instead of the expected three. Lectures are interesting, choose your lab group VERY wisely, and study hard for the tests, and attend class! It amazes me how many people do not attend a science class and expect to do well.
HARD exams. but offers 5pts EC on each. You can opt out of the final by taking 4 quizzes getting 100% on each. Material didnt seem to come from lecture or the book. Very socially awkward. some labs are group reports so choose group wisely. Show up to class, SOMETIMES gives hints for the exam
As long as you attend class and do simple studying, you will have no problem passing this class. Dr. Kvaal is funny and it's important to him that everyone understands certain concepts, which is why he uses the CPS system. I would recommend him!
Great professor for this class. His analogies really helped you learn the material. Really tried to liven up a rather dry subject with jokes, YouTube videos, and whatever else he could think of. Exams were a little tricky, but his exam policy is very lenient. Lab is fun as long as you have a good TA. I would recommend him for this class.
Hated him. He knows his stuff, but can't seem to bring it down to the student level. Was totally full of himself. The TA's could teach lecture better than him. Try not to miss class. Exams were hard, be sure to study A LOT! CPR HW was a joke. Labs basically sucked, but awesome TA! And plenty of cute women! ;) I personally wouldn't recommend him.
Unfortunately there is no way of taking 151 w/o having to meet this d. As much as his lectures suck go to them and study your butt off a week before the exam. Get as many of your points in lab it will help in the long run. Don?t really learn anything in the labs though.
Overall I guess so-so. Professor is arrogant. Obvious he'd rather teach upper level classes. Does not care how you do. CPS assignments are bull. However tests were easy material right from the book. Lab is a waste but easy points.
I'll try to make this as objective as possible. Tests are easy, if you study. CPR is easy if you actually take your time with it. Lab work is also easy if you review ahead of time; do your lab report correctly. Overall, easy class if you put in some effort.
This class was very enjoyable..it was my first biology class and I loved it! Do your work, study, attend labs and lectures and it will be easy. Lectures are very helpful, Kvaal gives analogies that make biology easy to learn and very interesting. Lab helped tie everything together and was fun and interesting, though it might depend on the TA.
All of the people giving Dr. Kvaal bad reviews are going to be in for a reality check if they wish to continue their studies in Biology. Biology is NOT an easy subject, but Kvaal does an excellent job, there are worse professors and much, much tougher classes. If you can't handle this class there is little hope for you in future biology classes.
Very funny. Even though attending lecture classes is not required I would go anyway because he gives you the answers to the test and make the class a lot easier than if you wouldn't attend class. He also makes some funny jokes at times
By far the greatest professor i've had. the professor is not hard just his class is hard and he will do everything to help you understand the subject. take this class with this professor i will recomend it
Kvaal is an excellent professor and made this class very enjoyable. One of my favorite professors here at SCSU! Definitely would take another of his classes, though you do have to study, it's possible.
This professor was excellent as long as you do your own fair share of the work. Review the ppts and read the text before coming to class and you will ace it. He has a sort of dry humor to him, but overall I would take courses with him again.
He may seem like a bad professor at first but he really knows his stuff. Go to lecture and you will get a B minimum. His final is optional if you do well of 4 of the 5 lecture exams. Sometimes he gives exam questions during class and flat out tells you the answer. Get used to his metaphors, he uses them a lot and sometimes on exams.
He is not like the ratings here online at all!! YOU get the grade you work for, honestly. Half the time he gives you the exam questions before the exam and supplementary quizzes which can bump your test grades up by 5%!! I recommend him even :), just adjust to a little sarcasm you will be fine
He was a pretty good professor overall. He made the class easy by dropping an exam and making the final optional.
Dr. Kvaal is very fair, very clear, and very honest. You work hard, you will do well. he gives you all the tools you need to succeed in his class. If you go to lecture, listen, and put in some time on your own, you'll do well. He can give the impression of being unapproachable but he's really not. Highly recommended!
I think he knows his stuff but students don't. He is patient for students to learn the basic even though it is 400 level course. But sometimes he just cruises by so fast it is hard to comprehend and keep track on what he talking about.
Easiest online class you will ever have, but the professor did not seem to care about his students in it at all. Often times he would not respond to my emails, or if he did happen to respond, he would use about one sentence total. 90% online quizzes, 10% a few easy assignments. Multiple retakes on quizzes, really did not learn much from course.
Kvaal is a good prof, but be advised that he tries to be funny. He's extremely sarcastic. The class itself is easy just because the lecture notes that he provides are whats going to be on the test. SHOW UP TO CLASS AND YOU WILL GET A GOOD GRADE!
He teaches in a way that every professor should teach. Go to class and listen and then review the material asap. It helped to read supplemental books in genetics as well. It will not be easy if you have a lack of motivation in the class.
I had previously taken this class during fall semester and ended up having to withdraw from the class because it was so difficult. I retook the class with Dr. Kvaal in the summer and understood the class so much better, attendance wasn't necessary but very helpful. I recommend taking this class with him if you have the choice! Great teacher!
I felt like Dr. Kvaal was definitely a good choice for this course. It's obvious he knows what he is talking about and asks some good critical thinking questions. The lectures can be somewhat mundane but it was still very beneficial to attend all of them.
If you're looking for an inspirational teacher who loves the subject and makes you LOVE the subject. This is not the guy. Only go to lecture to get the "Oh... this is going to be on the test..." You're basically teaching yourself. Be prepared to read from the book. He should just stick with researching. Hard to approach. He made me hate the class.
Dr. Kvaal is helpful professor. Some of his teaching style isn't good for teaching genetics though. He asks very good critical thinking questions in lecture that are great examples of how exam questions will look like. Exams were ok, not easy if you don't study. Read the textbook and notes!. Nice professor overall.
Not a good teacher for genetics whatsoever. I'm sure he knows quite a bit on the subject, however, all he does is read off the slides that are provided by the textbook word for word. I eventually stopped attending lecture because it was of no use to me. Taught myself from the text book got a B in the class. Homework was super tough. Pass on him
I found Dr. Kvaal to be a fair professor. I worry that the students who gave poor scores did not go to class and suffered for it. When I took genetics, he posted the three exams and said 90% of the final is right here. Yes his lectures could be a little dry, but I feel that professors make up for that with enthusiasm for the subject. Just study!
Best biology professor I have ever met at SCSU! He is always there to help you when needed. The class isn't supposed to be easy, but he does all he can to make sure students know what they need to get out of the class. Amazing professor that knows genetics very well. Makes the class very interesting . I would highly recommend.
It's a pretty difficult class, especially if you're new to basic chemistry. What makes this class difficult is he will explain definitions and vocabulary but he expects the student to critically think about the concepts. Tests are difficult. They are a shock if you don't do a lot of studying! He's a great teacher though and more than fair.
Kvall is an intelligent man, but a TERRIBLE teacher! He says things like, "You're going to need to know this for the exam, but I'm not going to tell you what the answer is. I want you to think for yourselves". Not clear. Not helpful. I refuse to take another class with him! Worst teacher I've ever had!
The class is tough. He will provide you with the definitions but it's up to you to take the terms and put them into concepts. You have to be able to visualize the terms interacting together. There are five exams and the final. The labs are 90% group worker and you write lab reports together (except for two of them). Quizzes every day in lab.
I took this course online and it was an easy A. All of the tests are easy and he gives more than one chance on all of them. He also assigned very few assignments and the few he did assign were easy.
He is sometime very unclear on what he means and hw sometimes contradicts the book. He is confusing with some of the things he says, they are unclear. The labs are easier and the learnsmart chapters really help.
He's very intimidating, He's not very approachable. Very strict. Learn-smart assignment every week sometimes twice a week. Need to study very hard for tests or you will be miserable.
Very instructional with great detailed when it comes to lecture but after that, you are on your own. If you can self-teach yourself then you'll be okay. I asked 2 questions, both got turned into stories which was irrelevant and still no answers to my questions. Wish everyone the best of luck here.
Kvaal is a dedicated man when it comes to teaching and he truly makes sure that everyone thinks outside of the box. He is also very funny, he would bring such a great vibe to his lectures. Also he offers extra credit which helps if tests are not your strong suit. The labs are also very easy and the learn smart activities helped me a lot!
I've had Kvaal for a few classes now and his teaching style has grown on me. When I first had him, I was indifferent to him. He doesn't give answers out freely, he makes you work for it and think about it. Now I really like him and his teaching. He cares about students, and he is more approachable than he seems. I would take again.
Do the homework, show up to class, study and you'll be fine. His exams aren't too bad, but there are always a few more in-depth questions that are tricky. Lab is really easy. The online homework gives you access to the ebook, so don't bother buying a hard copy.
Dr. Kvaal is by far my favorite professor. He can be intimidating but after having 2 classes with him hes actually very caring. Hes always prepared and has great lectures! We had mini pop quizzes so id suggest not missing class because the extra points were helpful. Take any class you can with Dr. Kvaal you will not be disappointed!
You do not learn much in lecture. He in unorganized and unprepared. You have to teach yourself. You get points for coming to class and lectured about the importance of coming to class (daily). If you read the chapters and understand the concepts you will do fine. He gives enough attendance and CONNECT points to even out a bad test or two.
One of my favorite educators I've experienced at SCSU so far. Great lectures, emphasis on conceptual comprehension as opposed to fact retention. Labs are usually on paper or computer with a grad student assistant. Rather lecture heavy, but very interesting and he often relates course material to relative careers and other courses you might take.
I really enjoyed the way that Dr. Kvaal taught this class. I honestly was not interested in genetics before I began this class, but now I want to make it a career! He has a fairly dry sense of humor, so don't be alarmed. He is always available for office hours and they helped so much. He really does care about his students!
Pretty good teacher, although sometimes when lecturing he goes off topic. Always brings so much energy to each lecture. Don't miss class because there are always in class quizzes that count towards final grade. I took the class during the summer so it was very interactive. do well on lab reports and you do not have to worry about finals
Took Bio 151 in the summer, which if you can don't do this. Way to much information in five weeks. Kvaal is awesome and actually cares about your grade and you if you out in effort. I didn't feel like I really learned all that I could from this class because it went so quickly so I would recommend taking it spring or fall. Good Luck.
He makes lecture fun.
Dr. Kvaal is a great professor. He want his student to learn critical thinking and understanding the class and not just memorizing his class. do your connect assignments and go to class for kahoot, finally get on time to class, he will give sometimes easy pop quizzes at the beginning.
Nice, but unorganized. He begins topics and then does not finish them. He does not follow a syllabus and expects you to already know half of the material. Assignments have little direction, but are graded comfortably. Tests are short answer; you get to know most of the questions beforehand. It was an easy class, but I did not retain much.
Exams are difficult but if you do your best in lab and the online assignments you should pass. Uses a competitive quiz taking app as attendance and at times seems to favor students who score high. Makes lectures interesting even when material is dull and laughs easily. Can be a little cold sometimes outside the classroom.
We were too right in our thinking on the tests... would not recommend
I'm taking the class now. The lab and Dr. Wagner are saving my grade. Dr. Kvaal's lectures are really poorly structured. He does "active learning", which actually means that he doesn't really lecture and we're left to figure out new concepts by ourselves. If we don't understand something, it's our fault because we're too lazy or stupid...
He is nice guy and funny. Kahoot 1-2 time each class where you tend to learn more than what he teaches. The labs are hard and each paper is basically a group paper so better pick a good group, I sure didn't. His teaching involves not giving us answers he always says " I am not giving you the answer, figure it out yourself that's science"
I am currently taking this class. Kvaal is impossible. Lecture is confusing, he is hard to follow and expects you to find things out on your own. Homework heavy. Attendence isn't mandatory but he gives multiple quizzes out during class so dont skip! the lab is the only reason im staying afloat, but lots of your points are dependent upon group membe
His lectures are poorly structured and he expects a lot of prior knowledge. I have found that most of the exams up to this point aren't what he said would be there. He gets off on tangents during lecture and that takes up most of class. Kahoots/quizzes are during class which you will learn the most from.
he is the worst . i never get what is he saying . he talks to much which is off topic . he thinks he is funny and try to joke . his class are boring .
Dr. Kvaal is an amazing professor and has been my favorite professor I've had during my undergrad. He seems intimidating at first but he really cares. This class isn't an easy A and Dr. Kvaal will make you work hard but it made me a better student. He's always willing to give extra help outside of class as well.
This was an Ok class for content, but Dr. Kvaal was not particularly approachable, particularly when we were asking questions that might have been on easy topics. The lectures were confusing as Dr. Kvaal would go on off topic tangents. I would not repeat this experience.
He does grade you for participation and Kahoots. They will help with your grade at the end if you are struggling. Homework takes a long time but helps with your grade at the end. Tests are long and graded heavily. Sometimes when he didn't have enough time to finish his lecture properly, he'd zoom through it quickly and we'd learn nothing.
Unprepared and all over the place. Ask a question and makes you feel dumb for not understanding.
This guy does the bare minimum at his job. He literally makes the LAs teach for him while he kills time talking about irrelevant tangential topics during lecture. Always unprepared, never responds to emails, never posts grades on time, always screws up the grades... everything about his class kills morale. Would not recommend.
Dr. Kvaal puts a lot of effort in his job and it shows. Very professional and engaging. I love the Kahoot questions! Great teacher and great class! I would recommend.
I was scared by all the bad reviews, but I shouldn't have. He can come across somewhat brunt, but he's a great teacher that cares about us students. If you ask for help, he will be there for you. He is very busy, so make an appointment or catch him right after class!
I took this class online and could tell that he is one of those professors that would probably be much better in the classroom but lectures on zoom got rather sporadic. The tests are HARD and kind of all over the place not directly from lectures or homework. Learnsmart Connect Homework takes a while but is actually helpful for learning.
The guy is so full of himself and so condescending, you would almost expect him to be perfect. To the conrary, he is poorly organized and all over the place wasting other people's time.
The professor wasnt my favorite. Sometimes I felt disregarded or stupid when he spoke with me. which sucked and made it hard to want to learn. But. The class was doable. hard but doable. and he is willing and able to talk and meet up to discuss tests. the class is hard to fail. i didnt do well on some tests and got 90-100 on the rest and got a B.
His lectures were the worst I've ever experienced. They didn't cover the subject matter very well and sounded like he just liked to hear himself talk. Essentially if you can teach yourself the content from the online homework you'll do well because he doesn't teach.
Honestly, avoid him at all costs. If you have to take a course by him, be prepared to learn everything on your own through the textbook. His lectures are him rambling about a random topic for the entire class period and he hands out worksheets that he never grades, nor gives the answer key for. PLEASE AVOID FOR YOUR OWN SAKE!!!
Not the best. Lectures were confusing and we were given worksheets but never received the answer key so I often had nothing to study. Towards the end of the semester, that was when he provided answer keys for worksheets and gave us a study guide. my grades went up by 2x. Just shows he should have done this from the start to be beneficial. No curve.
If you're good with teaching yourself then this is the professor for you. Almost every class consisted of a worksheet that he typically didn't provide answers for. When asking an LA to help with a problem, half of the time they wouldn't even know how to help. The class is passable, but it also made me hate a subject that I typically love to learn.
Avoid this professor at all cost. I should have taken this class at the community college and just transfer it. Be prepare to be told you're not good enough to be a stem major. He has no learning outcomes and doesn't care whether he's actually teaching you something. The useless kahoot quizzes are his bragging points.
As others stated, Kvaal is just not a good teacher. I could tell he was passionate about genetics, but he did a poor job of teaching the subject in an interesting or engaging way. The activities we did in lecture consisted of worksheets and kahoots that were not helpful in preparing for exams. The online homework was the only thing i learned from.
I had a great time taking this class with Dr. Kvaal. The class was mainly review for me so it was super easy and just went over BMB techniques. As long as lab notebook is kept up with you will be fine. By far the easiest class I took, but the final was somewhat hard as stuff wasn't discussed much in class that was on the final.
I don't like the way this professor teaches. Lectures are pointless because he hardly goes over material and then gives you a worksheet for you to figure out by yourself. He will say something important and then never goes over it again so you have to make sure your pencil is in your hand at all times. Also, he does not respond to emails at all.
Goodluck. Creepy and does not teach anything. Avoid
YOU HAVE TO GO TO CLASS FOR CREDIT. He was okay, he did a lot of group or kahoots which didn't really help some of us. I lot of Mcgrawl so get ready to read. I wish he would change how he teaches as kahoot is kinda of annoying. I feel as lots of studying was done outside of class. He's a great professor though and I would definitely take him again.
Really funny professor and makes the class easy to succeed. Attendance is mandatory and easy points for your grade so GO! Do the online homework and study from it. Tests are simple multiple-choice questions. Study with book and actually KNOW the content and you'll be fine. If you need help in the class, go to tutoring or form study groups.
i think dr. kvaal has evaluated his teaching style and gotten better. i used to be warned about this guy and i love his class. sometimes it's frustrating because its mainly worksheets in class rather than lecture but he's always willing to go over content. very nice guy.
He is a better teacher than he was. I was warned about him and enjoyed the class. Exams weren't easy or hard. He allowed the entire class to retake an exam and kept the questions the same. Participation does matter but it is very easy. I really liked genetics and he was funny and nice. I recommend!
As some of the newer comments are saying, I think he has gotten better. He is very knowledgeable in the subject and really the only issue is that he took until the end the semester to grade the mandatory in person labs but, this also was a summer class and everything was fast paced. Good professor all around. Maybe just don't take in the summer.
Prof. Kvaal has a unique teaching style, but engaging with it pays off. The class is challenging, but manageable with the free textbook and study resources like unstuck ai. Attendance matters, so just show up and participate.
the class is lectures and then worksheets, His lectures will feel pointless and don't help answer the worksheets. The LAs, who are awesome, have to teach everything. the tests have bad averages but he makes the daily assignments worth enough that you'll get a fine grade. lots of McGraw hill homework but it helps to understand the content. 3/10
Collage isn't easy and in this class if you don't study and do the McGraw hill/GO TO CLASS, you are going to struggle. He gives out a lot of questions for exams to in class. I do feel like he lost his steam at the end of the semester, but the final wasn't hard and he's pretty funny if you talk to him. The worksheets are super important as well.
His method of teaching this class is very hard at first - he jumps in head first in the first week and you're expected to learn as you go. You can tell he much prefers to teach this class and is a much better professor than the one you experience in 151 or 262. He can be a polarizing person, but if you show interest and ask questions, you'll be OK
He knows the subject but he doesn't deliver the information properly. In the class, 30 min is his lecture and then we do the worksheet, which is completely different from what he teaches. Labs are not that hard but he never answered the question we used to ask, which felt really rude. The online homework is very long but is easily graded.
I did not have a good experience with this professor. He only lectured for less than 30 min each lecture and blamed students for his mistakes. He repeated lied to the class and gave snarky comments when questions were asked. I got an 89% in the course after I lost points for his mistakes and he did not round my grade or even give a B+.
