An amazing teacher. Really funny and welcoming, very kind and cares about his students. Will attempt to be relatable to the younger generations by quoting or referencing pop culture. Great guy, 10/10
I think he's the best professor at Pierce college. His lectures are fun and he goes through all the material. I would definitely recommend him to everyone.
Seriously go to office hours if you think you are a "bad writer" and he will give you tea and help you write outlines for your papers or create a solid thesis. Utilize the They Say and the green books and refer to his website. He has amazing lecture notes on there that really help, use them! Great prof. really cares about changing higher education
Prof. L is funny and enages you with the material you can tell he really loves to teach and wants students to think critically. don't be afraid to ask for help email him or go to office hours with questions. and he's hott if you like Indiana Jones types
I took his philosophy 06. trurst me taking him is worth it he explains the material to you very well and also offers office hours. He really cares about the students and wants you to pass and understand.
This class is a must take. The teacher is incredible, witty, and funny. You do not need to buy a textbook, but reading is mandatory. The readings are always highly accessible because he really loves his job, and he will make sure that you understand the information. He is a great teacher.
Super knowledgeable! Great personality. Participation is part of your grade. Class is basically a lecture with a majority of it being discussion. There are 5 essays but you can send him incomplete drafts before and have them evaluated in order to get the best grade possible. This class truly made me become more open minded &Igained more knowledge.
Professor Lay is definitely one of the best -- if not thee best -- prof at Pierce. He is witty, clever, hilarious, inspirational, knowledgable and most importantly, makes the curriculum fun. If you're attentive, take concise notes, and attend office hours you should be golden. If you're looking for an easy A, search elsewhere.
Great teacher and he is very helpful but there is lots of essays if you don't like writing it's not a class for you. Although I don't like is he gives you 7 -5 days before the essay prompt is put up and then you have to turn it in. It is a must to go to class or u r going to have a fail bcuz everything you have n the easy is in the lecture.
One of the best philopsher teachers out there. He really cares about doing a great job teaching and it shows. If you get the chance to take his class you will not regret it. Definitely a good person who takes pride in what he does.
very easy and makes it extremely fun to learn. very inspirational and wants you to get A's. very helpful and makes class engaging. easy midterm. final he gives you the first 21 questions beforehand so just memorize the definitions for those and its an easy A jut come to class and youll get A's very easy and fun
Prof. Lay is one of the best teachers I've had. His lectures were interesting and he's extremely funny. There were four essays and he drops your lowest grade. He's a very fair grader and gives good feedback on the essays. He also lets you submit drafts of the essays and returns it with feedback on how you could improve it. 10/10 TAKE HIS CLASS
BEST PROFESSOR EVER! Professor Lay is one of the best professors I've ever had If you send him an essay before it's due he'll give you comments and if he doesn't get back to you in time he gives you an extension His comments are amazing and help you with the other essays! He is so understanding and really cares for his students to succeed. TAKE HIM
Professor Lay is SUPER RAD. Don't second guess on taking his class. He is extremely enthusiastic, and always comes to class caffeinated up & ready to teach the class. He is very helpful and really does care about his students. He will make you laugh, he will make you interested in what he is presenting, and he will give A LOT of feedback to you.
Professor Lay is an outstanding professor. His lectures are vivid and exciting. His topics of discussion are relevant and applicable. Super fun class. Take it and I guarantee you will walk out a more knowledgeable person. Papers are hard, but he's there to help and will provide great feedback. Very smart guy and very passionate about what he does.
He's a one-of-a kind hipster, intellectual professor. Very welcoming and offers ways to earn participation points if you have a difficult time speaking up in class. He was very influential to me. Took his class in the winter so it was pretty fast-paced but if you are a good essay writer you are set in his class.
Great professor! He's really cool and has great lectures. Def knows his stuff! All reading/ lecture notes are on website (posts all main phil texts there). He gives the answers to short quizzes as we take them. Five essays. Good to submit a draft before each is due, he will send it back with helpful comments. No midterm, last essay is our final.
One of the best teachers I've ever had. He will hep you through anything you're struggling with in office hours, explain over again if he needs to. He tries and succeeds in making his lectures relatable and interesting. He is very reasonable, offering extension on due dates and such if you talk to him. He absolutely cares for his students, 10/10.
Even though Phil classes and papers can be quite challenging, Professor Lay makes the topics very clear and interesting. He helps a lot with the option of "draft" prior to an essay due, and gives great comments to make you write a good paper. I highly recommend his classes to develop some critical thinking and anecdotes for future university/job :)
He's a real kind guy. very caring. Class isn't mandatory but very convenient if you don't understand the assignments. He's very chill and hip. Take his class if you wanna be excited to go to class everyday.
I am so happy I took this class, he is such an amazing lecturer. His lectures are never boring and it's very straight to the point. The class can be a little difficult don't ignore the free tutoring option provided, it really helps. I really recommend this class.
He is a great professor and his lectures are definitely not boring. Participating regularly is a must. The essays constitute a big chunk of your grade. If you have a hard time writing essays, I HIGHLY recommend going to his office hours because he can help you tremendously. He is super nice and helps you come up with a working thesis if you're lost
hands down, best professor at pierce. at the beginning i absolutely dreaded taking philosophy but once i met him, he engaged the entire class and i couldn't wait to go to his class each day. Its definitely not a class that you need to go to but you should if you don't understand the paper you have to write. If i could take him again.. i so would.
This professor is great, he is entertaining and actually makes you understand what the material means. Essays are pretty easy if you get the concepts. I wouldn't skip class, the lectures are really helpful to make sense of philosophers. He is also extremely eccentric and funny, always willing to help you out if you need it! Good feedback too.
I could write a 5 page essay on how amazing prof Lay is. the class is tough (not gonna lie) he is a pretty tough grader as well but his lectures really help, he's so funny, funniest guy i've ever met & truly cares about his students. would still take all of his classes, just because he's such a great guy and he's beautiful! very hipster! love it!
Honestly the only professor who has genuinely improved my writing skills, the material can be hard to understand but he is very helpful and tries to make everyone understand. You do have to read on your own time and don't have a ton of time to write essays but I would definitely take this professor again. Super funny and eccentric guy, I recommend.
Lay is an awesome professor if u guys need a philosophy class I HIGHLY recommend. his grading is very easy to understand, hes funny as hell. He lets us eat in class as long as its not disruptive. Hell answer your questions you have and u have tests every wednesday but nothing scary at all, the day of all the quizzes he reviews 30 min before test
Professor Lay is truly a special person and teacher. He clearly has an altruistic approach to his students, where he truly wants them to find the tools to be happy in life. Lay has improved my writing far more than any other writing teacher I have ever had. Its also very easy to stay engaged as he always keeps class interesting and hilarious.
One of the best, most personable and respectable teachers I've ever had. He is engaging and very helpful on all topics, essays, quizzes, etc. He exceeds the standards for most students when it comes to humor, difficulty, and general attitude. I admire and respect his outlook on teaching greatly & think most teachers/people could take notes from him
I took professor Lay during the winter session 2017 and he is truly a really good professor. The course obviously was at a faster pace and there were essays and reading due each week however each class felt like a big conversation about the material which made taking a class during winter much bearable. He helps with the quizzes before u take them!
4 essays (24 pages total), group participation, and "quizzes" (write what he tells you). I might just be picky, but this class was SO boring and too easy. He just stands up there and talks for an hour and a half with barely any discussion. When someone has a question, he tries to guess what it is instead of actually listening. Not engaging at all.
Took him once as a requirement, ended up getting addicted to philosophy! Hilarious. Insightful. Passionate. (HIP!) By far the best professor. Truly cares about students and is VERY helpful in office hours, so stop by!!! Helps students value education and discern our own happiness in being ourselves. And yes he's very attractive.
This professor is really accommodating. Willing to explain things to you however many times it takes. Accepts rough draft ( latest is 3 days before essay is due) and gives you extensive feedback to fix it. Once returned to you- you will have about 2-3 days to turn it in after he gives it back ( extension ). Gives a lot of extra credit!
Philos 5 is an essay class, but if you listen to his feedback your writing will improve so much. It's a very fun class because the prof is so engaged in teaching, a very hipster dude.
His lecture notes are actually very messy and disorganized. Office hours are unreliable and his lectures tend to wander without any clear point. Also, he contradicts all the other philosophy professors in Pierce. I do not recommend him.
Professor Lay is the best Eng/Philo professor I've had at Peirce! His class can be challenging due to some of the reading but he does a great job at breaking the text down. The lectures are more of a class discussion and are very interesting. He improved my writing by 100% Take him instead of a Engl 102 class! He's so funny and cute!
All you have to do is attend class and take good notes. He reviews a day before the test, just ask questions if you don't understand. He provided an online textbook but you don't really need it. He is always in a great mood and it makes the class even more interesting. Highly recommend
This class was amazing. The professor was very caring and knowledgeable about the subject. He made very difficult to explain topics and issues into explainable ones. He does this so well that he only needs to explain it about 2x. He really wants you to pass, so much so, that he will hold your hand if you are completely lost. No real negative here.
One of my favorite professors. He's very patient and is willing to explain something 5 even 10 times if it means it helps you. He really wants you to succeed. He's available during office hours and really takes the time to answer any questions. He gives quizzes often so be prepared for that. Overall, I really reccomend you take him.
Christopher is overall a great professor. Took his philosophy 5 Tuesday/Thursday class and he makes a tough subject manageable. He is very animated while giving his lectures and cares a lot about his students. The best way to pass his class is to complete all the essays and weekly group discussions. Would take again!
I took him in Spring 2016, and he did have a lot of essays on certain philosopher's ideas, each one being (if I remember) 5 page, double spaced. But other than that he lectures of said people, their ideas, and is hilarious. He bashes on himself, but takes light of it. Honestly everyone has seen him at one point: he is Indiana Jones with the camera.
Professor Lay is for sure the coolest professor I had this semester! His style of teaching is laid back and you learn a lot from the way he has his lectures and group activities. Quizzes are the easiest yet helpful quizzes I've ever taken and really the only important grading are his essays, but technically there's only 3 the entire semester.
Modern Indiana Jones. Midterm and final are worth 60%, notes disorganized and unclear. Often does not provide clear answer to the questions so I would be unsure even after I ask. Notes offer exercises but not solutions. Overall messy notes and handwriting, hard to focus on and tries to explain everything in such a manner that he only confuses you.
Very good.
I never went to his office hours, but if social anxiety hadnt held me back I probably would have gone as much as once a week, even just to chat. Lay is kind, funny, and overall just a wonderful human. He really wants you to succeed. His class was a joy to be in.
He's the nicest guy, just engaging and respectful 24/7. He gives out tea to everyone every morning lol. Super engaging class, super clear expectations. Phil 6 is pretty easy regardless but he definitely makes it something you don't wanna miss.
He already has lectures notes provided for you, so the textbook isnt necessary. Technically, attendance may not be mandatory because he gives a review before the quiz which is enough to take the quiz. He is hilarious and chill. The quizzes are pretty easy plus he gives partial credit. There are sometimes extra credit on some quizzes.
Christopher Lay is the best Professor Ive had by far. He cares so much about his students and really wants each and every one of his students to succeed. He is so hilarious and there was not one single class I had that I didnt laugh. He gives you tea if you bring hot water and sometimes gave snacks before the quizzes ! he makes learning so fun !
Christopher Lay is a very funny professor. It is enjoyable to be in his class and he makes it fun to learn. Coursework is fairly easy and he has a pdf for the textbook available!
Christopher is excellent at explaining such abstract concepts in philosophy and he always has his students in mind. He handled the transition to online learning very well. He lets you submit drafts of the first three papers if you start them early enough. Overall, a smart, caring professor and a great class.
If you struggle with ADHD-like focus and comprehension problems, this class can be a nightmare. Fast paced, cluttered explanations, had a hard time negotiating accommodations like written summaries or transcripts without getting unwarranted critical assumptions about my work ethic. Left feeling resentful. Helpful writing advice, but at what cost?
He is my favorite professor. No one comes close to beating this guy. He is funny, and treats the class like adults. He is nice and approachable and cares about the subject. Subject is interesting and helpful for real world. He gives extra credit/ partial credit and tea! I have nothing but amazing things to say about this professor. Take him!!!
I found this class to be miserable because I dislike Philosophy in general, but I think the professor is decent. I definitely feel like my writing improved throughout this class. My main issue was that I found lectures more confusing than helpful, as they are often all over the place and left me with more questions than answers. Go to office hours!
Very much enjoyed this professor's energy, he gives out no exams and no homework just essays which is my personal cup of tea. Taking this class has unequivocally enhanced my skills in writing. Gives out a lot of helpful feedback after grading essays to help you improve for next time.
He is a VERY funny and interesting person. His lectures are so comical but are also confusing. I passed the class with an A but could not tell you a single thing that I learned. The readings were interesting and the essays are all 5 pages. If you want an easy A, take him and just do the easy work (4 essays and 4 discussions).
Professor Lay is an outstanding professor and really cares about his students' growth. Take advantage of his office hours. He really wants you to learn and grow, and I am very thankful for the time he gave me to develop my skills. Read the book, practice the questions, leverage the tutoring and Professor Lay's help.
Probably one of the best professors I've ever had. The way his class is set up is very straight forward. 4 papers and 4 discussions. Discussions and lectures help a lot with the papers. If you pay attention during lectures you'll have plenty of ideas to write for the essays and the discussion can be used to ask questions and refresh. Great class.
A really dope teacher. Gives you an OER, so no paying for textbooks! He's genuine and cares about what he's teaching, ESPECIALLY Asian philosophy. His lectures can be a bit boring but can give a lot of insight if you're confused about certain aspects. He goes on related tangents.
He is a great teacher and is extremely accommodating to you and understands that life happens! He will take all the time you need to make sure you have a grasp on the subject. However, the class is only graded on 4 essays so I recommend you start them early since they are tough topics.
Would I take his class again? Who knows. I took him before and this is the second time but a different subject and he's not too bad, only thing is he's not as responsive to my emails as I'd like for him to be which sucks.
took for winter sem, he was alright. essays every week on diff ethics topics, and allows optional submissions for drafts if u want comments to help you. ALWAYS FOLLOW HIS FEEDBACK! doing so will maybe give you an A! he checks a lot for mistakes, feedback is very clear. tough grader tbh. specific structure on essays can be confusing, but he helps!
Christopher Lay is an amazing professor. The difficulty of his class is pretty average and you do have to try if you hand to succeed, but he makes it very clear of what he wants and looks for. He really cares about his students and makes his class a positive educational environment.
By far the most fun professor on campus! The self-proclaimed "hipster" makes his lectures into insanely fun discussions. Lectures consist of reviewing the weekly reading section by section which makes some of the complex topics very clear. It is completely normal to be swept up by his quirky energy. Wish every professor would emulate his style!
Christopher (what he is referred to) is an amazing prof. He engages with students well and can explain heavy concepts that some may not have any interest in to become more engaging and relevant. His whole class has only 4 essays assigned and drops the lowest one. He lets you turn in drafts and holds many office hours. Take him if you can!
Christopher Lay will be one of your best teachers. He is extremely competent in his subject of philosophy. Most important, he always prioritizes the student. He will explain concepts as much as necessary, he might offer optional notes for essays before they are due, and more. His essays can be challenging, but his class is definitely worth it.
Professor Lay was one of the best professors I have had. His lectures are engaging and fun to hear. We had 4 essays to write, five pages each. In my experience, he did not give grades until the very end of the semester. It did stress me out, but as long as you do the work and listen to his feedback, you'll get an A. Super cool dude!
Prof Lay is one of the best profs I have had at Pierce. His lectures are interesting and very helpful to the readings. If you are ever lost he is always willing to help. He is the type of professor who is understanding and wants to see his students succeed. His office hours are so helpful so take advantage of them! Would def take his class again!
Christopher is the type of person you can easily grab a drink with. It's obvious that he could be a professor at Yale or Harvard but chooses to teach community college. In PHIL 5, you'll learn how to be a better writer, a better thinker, and most importantly, a better human. You'll also begin to hold other professors to Christopher standards. Take!
Great class. I did the class over summer so each week was a new unit. Lots of help and guidance before you submit your essay. There are extra credit options given. A good amount of group discussions to help prepare for papers as well. Very accessible and clear doing office hours and email. He provides the reading for you. Lowest grade dropped.
Professor Lay is a quality instructor. He is very laid back, funny, and estatic. You can tell he has the credentials to work at a big uni, but he chooses to work here because he loves his job.Your grade is based on 4 essays, and he drops the lowest one. First topic is a bit tough, but if you can make it past that, everything else is ez.
Christopher's Philosophy 001 class was easy but always interesting with a heavy grading weight towards exam. He offered a lot of extra credit opportunities that were easy to fulfill and was always clear on what he expected for in class writing and take home exams. He also brings tea for anyone who brings a mug!
Christopher is a very multi-faceted prof. He's interesting & inspirational in his own way & it shows in his lectures. This class is a bit more difficult than his others but he gives clear guidelines & feedback on how to improve on each writing. But he doesn't just concisely teach the readings, he clearly explains how his essays should be written!
Christopher is one of the most unique & interesting profs at Pierce. He has a miraculous ability to make relatively difficult philosophical topics concise & straightforward. He also brings this very uplifting energy that kept me focused & engaged throughout the class. If you follow his essay comments & improve upon your work, you will get an A.
Easy going. Fun to be around. Engaging. Respects students. Good at teaching. To be honest I didn't do any of the readings and I was completely fine passing almost every assignment with an A. As long as you pay attention in class(didn't even take notes), grasp the concepts, and put effort into your essays, you'll do great.
I took this class over the summer, 5-weeks, and it was BRUTAL. Almost every week, an essay was due. He is VERY FLEXIBLE and approachable. Nearly the entire class stayed for office hours; these are key to helping you construct your essay. This critical thinking class will test you like no other. I am so glad I took this class with him.
Very fun! He is so real and assignments are not heavy. He gives extra credit too. Plus, he never judge of what you think!
I took his philosophy 001 course and Christopher was very funny and nice! I did not understand a single thing but I still got an A. He gives you opportunities to get a better grade than you did from your last paper by listing what you could improve on and if you changed it on your next essay, he'd give you a higher grade on both!!
Was easily one of the most fun and interesting professors I've ever taken. Admittedly his class is very essay-heavy, so be prepared. He gives you pretty much all the info you need to succeed in lectures so as long as you pay attention/take some notes in class, it's pretty easy.
This class was fine but he does not let you see your grade for the entire course. I even asked him multiple times but he would net tell me.
He is so enthusiastic for the material. Assignments are going to include a lot of group work and 3 long essays that you will write piece by piece in class during time writing sessions. I loved this class, really opening my eyes up to certain ways of thinking. Should be a essential class, but there is only one Christopher. lol Also, such a homie.
Really cares about relating to his students with relevant real-world connections and casual "chit-chat" time before classes start. He will tell you what to write in your essays while giving tips on making it your own. The readings be up to 20 pages long, but are very interesting and can be connected to your major no matter the topic
This class does dive into a lot of detail for the 3 different essays that you will need to work on for the class, they do have office hours everyday. The grades are posted but only next to the assignments on canvas it is best to ask them about what your grade is on canvas since they do not post it on the gradebook, the class was pretty engaging!
This class has been extremely confusing. We have had three essays during the semester, and this professor sometimes goes off topic during the lecture. Despite the fact that I have accommodations, the professor was not helpful and there is a lot of readings to do, and the assignments are not explained clearly. Material was unnecessarily complicated.
Literally impossible to fail this class. Such an amazing and relatable professor who does the best he can to make student success a priority. Taking this class was an opportunity I really lucked out on. Don't miss out.
What an amazing professor Christopher is. For starters this guy is hilarious and a joy to be around. You are graded on three things, take homes essays, in class essays, and work done in class. The in class essays are the hardest thing but he literally gives you the answers to them. Overall, amazing professor who teaches really well and gives 100%
Good professor would recommend.
Great professor overall. Ask as many questions as possible because he is always happy to answer them. Focuses on in-class writing as well.
One of the most caring professors I've taken. Tray of foods at the front door available to make sure students aren't hungry and questions are encouraged. Will gladly chat with students during office hours and cares about each student's success. Goes out of his way to make in depth structures for essays. Essays are tough but improvement is rewarded
One of the most realest professors/ teachers Ive ever had, extremely funny and entertaining even during his lectures! One thing I did not like was that he doesn't let you see your current grade til the end. Essays are somewhat difficult but nothing complex. Office hours are updated weekly and is does not judge others by their personal opinions.
He was one of the best professors I've had in my college experience, his lectures were engaging and he was always willing to answer questions. Before his class, I struggled to fill simple 5-page essays, but because of this class, they feel much lighter and less difficult. I found this course to be difficult at times, but genuinely rewarding.
Not my favorite professor, but some like him. He has his unique style of teaching, but I wouldn't take him again, unfortunately. Take Mia Wood if you can instead. She's great. Also from Pierce.
Although I passed his class with and A, he had me rewrite a couple of the assignments almost three times. He was pretty harsh and brutal when critiquing the writing assignments, I feel like he wanted to tell me worse if he could. In my personal opinion a lot of his philosophical beliefs were opinion based and came from a ego standpoint.
While it was nice that, aside from the in-class assignments, we only had to write essays, the lectures and his teaching style were difficult to understand. I had to teach myself most of the topics since we couldn't access any notes online. He is a tough grader, but gives good constructive feedback and is really good about taking questions.
