Great prof! Very nice and helpful. Homeworks were hard, but exams were easy.
Very good lecturer, but IMPOSSIBLE exams. Likes to throw chalk.
Excellent lecturer, entertaining. attention to detail cumbersome at times.
Maybe the class is hard...or he?
Did well in class, i guess because the tests were easy. He did an ok job
Very nice man, but a bit unorganized in overall lecture plan. Tests were partial and fair. Has lots of enthusiasm for the subject material.
CRAZY AUSTRALIAN PROF! WHAT'S NOT TO LIKE??!!;) He makes frequent use of his Aussie heritage to make you laugh. You will learn a LOT in his class. He comes off as an eccentric, funny, nonetheless highly intelligent person and answers questions patiently. He does have an obsessively crazy love of math!
I've taken 3 calc class at Pitt, each with 3 different profs. He was the worst of the three.
Not a fun class to be in if math's not your thing. We learnt barely anything that resembled calculus that i expected. We got to the integral in a class that was supposed to cover calc 1 and 2. The class focused on limit proofs, series and convergence. Dont take this class and expect an easy A.
Easily my favorite professor ever. Lectures were the best part of my day. Jokes were subtle yet timeless. (It's OK to laugh, guys) Lectures are mandatory, homework is awful, but exams are reasonable if you study EVERYTHING. Lennard wants to see you achieve, so he is willing to help. I'm a business major who never took calc, but I still earned my A.
Genuinely interested in students and teaching, his enthusiasm is unflagging. He's crazy and australian, curious, a great teacher. Tests were super-fair. If you work and learn, you do well.
He was one of my favorite professors. He makes lectures very interesting and funny, I laughed almost every single day in his class. He challenges you a lot and to do well you must be willing to study EVERYTHING in your notes and homework. I do not recommend engineers taking his calc classes as he is very theoretical. Great for math majors.
Tried too hard to be funny - and was actually not. Juvenile humor. Recitation was more useful than class, unfortunately. To give him credit, he tried hard. But my interest in this subject dropped dramatically after taking his class. Try to avoid.
Very cool teacher...funny, connects with the students...hilarious accent that he likes to make jokes with...class is hard but very fair...class attendance is key to success because the book is not used AT ALL...
Lennard was possibly my favorite teacher last year. His class really got into the theory of calculus (I took Honors Calc 1 & 2). The homework essentially was the test, but it was never due, which gives you lots of freedom. You'll know right away if you don't like his class, and that's the time to drop it. I definitely recommend Lennard.
This is the best math class ever. I only opened the 200 dollar book three times because the entire course is based around the notes. It is mainly theoretical and you will learn a lot. Dr. Lennard was great and really helpful.
I honestly had no clue what i was getting myself into. Homework was so hard it was discouraging. His replies to emails were slow, and my TA was not all that helpful. I only studied for the tests by rewriting every proof i could find, and luckily all the proofs on the tests were similar to/the same as the ones in class. Could have easily failed.
Best math class I've ever had! Lennard expects a lot from his students. His tests are hard, but he offers so much extra credit (up to 25% per test!) that it is fairly easy to get a good grade. Study your notes like mad, go to class, go to office hours, it all helps! Lennard also has a great sense of humor and really makes the class really fun.
Dr. Lennard teaches his subject very well. Honors Calculus is very different and unlike regular calculus. He knows the material very well and will gladly help during office hours. I didn't like class the first few weeks because I felt very lost. Eventually I caught on and the class was manageable if you put in the time and effort. Amusing lectures.
If you're methodical and follow every lecture you will learn so much in this class! You need to be disciplined, because although there is no graded homework to turn in, you can't wait until the final to study. He's very funny and smiles all the time, so it makes attending class very pleasant. Previous work in calculus is almost a requirement.
An entertaining eccentric ozzie!
Favorite math class ever. He's got a great sense of humor. His Calc 1&2 class is not what you'd expect; you learn integration before differentiation and there's a lot on induction. But it's really not a hard class at all as long as you keep up with the homework.
By far the best professor I have ever had. Every class I came out feeling enlightened. I attended class not because I had to but because I wanted to. His exams are slightly hard but he gives choices which allows you to choose one of two options for each of the two problems. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Excellent professor, extremely clear in lecture, gives a very fair grade. The class is a lot of work but is very worthwhile. You learn a lot and will enjoy doing so. There is ample opportunity for extra credit on his exams (24% of each exam is bonus credit). Best professor I have ever had. I recommend this class to anyone interested in math.
Take a class by Chris Lennard! He makes class interesting by telling jokes you'll roll your eyes at by the end of the semester, jumping around the classroom and learning students' names. Attending reciation will test your discipline, and homework is difficult, but exams are not too difficult if you study. Stick with it - half the class dropped out.
Dr. Leannard's Honors Calc I class was extremely difficult and required A LOT of outside of class work and time. If you will put forth the effort, the class is worth it. If not you'll either fail or end up withdrawing
1.you do not learn the things you'd learn in regular calc I and II 2.passionate, nice, enthusiastic 3.smart man, and good at explaining things one on one 4.lectures weren't too good, because it's easy to get lost, and once you do, you can't catch back up (this material has to be learnt at your own pace). people just go to lecture to get the notes
I would highly recommend this class for math majors or anyone looking for a more in-depth treatment of calc. Yes, it is hard, but he does give generous extra credit on tests and it is a very rewarding class. I thought he was a fantastic lecturer and he is very helpful in office hours.
He's the best professor you'll have! He's funny all the time. Aussie <3 He's pretty easy to follow if you pay attention. The exams are exactly the same as the homework so DO THE HOMEWORK. Don't wait until the very end because the homework is pretty challenging. Do the homework and you will...starts with P and ends with DONKEY... Right, PASS.
By far the best and most interesting teacher I have ever had. He wants you to succeed and is very helpful and encouraging one on one. Lectures were kept interesting by his math jokes and creation of and naming of symbols for lots of theorems. Recitations were extremely helpful. DO THE HOMEWORK. Tests are almost exactly the same as the homework
Pr. Lennard may very well be the best professor I have at Pitt. Probably the best teacher I will ever have. Every time I left his class I felt enlightened; I would go so far as to say his class completely changed my outlook on the subject in a positive way. The class is tough but if you do the homework you will be able to succeed.
The best lecturer I've had. He is hilarious and a great guy. I looked forward to his lectures every day and always left feeling enlightened. It is a unique, difficult class; it is taught entirely through proofs, going into all the theory of calc 1 and 2 you could ever want. He is a very fair grader, however, and wants you to do well.
Funniest prof I've ever had. He is interested in his students and willing to help them succeed. Do ALL the homework: tests are very similar. There is extra credit available on every exam, and an A is an 85%. Average is a B- to B. Go to Lenny with any homework you don't understand. He will explain problems that are often later found on exams.
Lennard was the most entertaining lecturer I've ever had. Fantastic prof. GET READY TO WORK! Class is VERY hard. I had a 22% on my first two exams. The only reason I passed was because I passed the final. And I had a 5 on the Calc AB AP test. If you think you love math, this is your class.
Great teacher. Would recommend 0235 if you like the theoretical part of it and has already taken it in high school (BC Calc). Gives you the theoretical intuition for materials normally done in computational way. Doesn't really cover calc 2 tho, you are expected to know/self learn the computational part of calc 2. Liked his class so much i took 450
Lennard is by far the best professor I have ever had. He's hilarious and explains things in a way that is easy to understand. The material is very difficult, the average on the second exam was sub-50. If you want to pass you need to spend a lot of time reviewing his lecture notes. 85+ is an A but he doesn't curve. Would definitely take again.
He has the potential to be a great lecturer but his priorities for this class were misplaced. He made us learn nearly a third of the course outside of class. Spent the first month and a half on vector algebra (our first exam had zero calculus on it). Tends to drag on about less important stuff, then really quickly do everything important in one go
He really seems to enjoy teaching, but neglects the important material. He will assign homework to read an important chapter and never mention it in class. That is how he has taught much of the course. I do not feel well prepared in the slightest for the final. Do not take him for Calc 3.
Best professor I've had yet. Will be hard pressed to find another who can explain things as well as him, while being hilarious, enthusiastic, and caring. He makes you work extremely hard. You will NOT pass the class if you don't do all of the work he assigns, at least for Calc III. However as as result, you'll understand the material better others.
He does his own thing. Didn't really teach material necessary for a calc III course. Puts way to much emphasis on theoretical algebra and geometry. Didn't even bother teaching chapters 11 or 12 from the textbook. Homework are extremely difficult (he writes them, not from text) but DO THEM. EXAM Q'S COME FROM RIGHT FROM THE HW
This class is by no means easy, but if you stay on top of the work you'll be okay. He is clearly very passionate about calculus (and if your planning on taking this class you better be too). He makes the lectures exciting and he spends most of the time joking around and throwing markers across the room, while still teaching the information well.
He's a funny and likable dude.
Math 0235 is a good course if you like calc and have had some previous experience in it, otherwise it will be a struggle. To pass the class, do the homework and review lectures, since test questions are from those. The class is paced well with the exception of the final weeks, when he dumps material on that he did not have time to teach in class.
I got a C and a B in the first two tests. I thought i was done. And he doesn't curve. But I end up with A+ The final is rather easy. (But it require a lot of work)The class do require u know some in calc1 at least. Lots of homework and those who can manage them should be fine in the class. Like him said," this is not wrong, mate!"
Dr. Lennard was my favorite professor this semester. He's engaging, hilarious, and incredibly intelligent and passionate about math. 0235 was tough, but if you put in the work, you should be fine. As in, DO THE HOMEWORKS! Trust me. Also, brush up on your basic Calc knowledge before you take this class, especially sequences and series.
Dr. Lennard is very enthusiastic about math and often makes jokes in lecture to make you smile in a morning class. He makes himself very available to students outside of class and makes sure you leave with all your questions answered. The best way to succeed in this class is to study homework problems religiously and go to office hours.
Dr. Lennard is the best professor I've had at Pitt by far. Great guy, and he gives really engaging lectures. You work at least 3 times as hard as you've worked in any other class, but at the end you learn 10 times as much as you would in any other class. Extremely difficult class, but he understands and will do whatever it takes to help.
Dr. Lennard is a fantastic professor. His sense of humor really makes lectures enjoyable, and you can tell that he really does care about his students. This class is difficult, and I can only really recommend it if you'll be willing to put more time in than you have into any other class. But if you have the time, the class is doable and rewarding.
Used his notes instead of a book, which left many things unclear at times. He did make jokes during class, which was nice, but that doesn't exactly mean much in terms of a good professor. Graded on 2 things, midterm and final. Wasn't super helpful during office hours, when asked about how to do something we were never shown in his notes for a hw.
Pros: No mandatory homework Lecture notes and homework solutions were always emailed to you Great exposition of ideas in the course A caring professor who wants his students to receive a fair grade Cons: Very pedantic Crawled through prerequisite material (for some) Graded by few things Sloppy notes Possibly the worst notation I've ever seen
Dr. Lennard was a fantastic professor. He made sure that everyone understood the prerequisite material, and presented new material in an engaging manner. Homework was embedded into lecture notes-so you had to go to class to get the problems. Graded on midterm and final, but the final was a project and he gave you all the help that you needed.
I loved this course; people thought it was very challenging, but as long as you try to keep up with the homework as Dr. Lennard assigns it and ask for help when you need to, everything is doable. I took the course without taking BC prior, and I learned everything as needed from this course. I would 100% recommend this course.
Math 413 + 420 in one class. Hilarious prof, pleasure to be around, greets every student by name. Went over time constantly from joking around, but lectures were super clear and informative. Lots of ungraded homework to practice proof skills, & easy to get help when stumped. Lenient grading (when he got around to it), learned a ton of tough math.
Most non conventional course I've ever taken at Pitt. His grading revolves around 3 exams (2 exams andthe final)which gives very little breathing room if youd fall short on one. CONSISTENTLY was upwards of 15 minutes late to lecture. Took 1.5 months to grade our first exam. Our 2nd exam, was a project which took much of my studytime up to to finals
Professor Lennard is my least favorite professor I have had at Pitt. He starts class 5 mins late and always goes late. He sends you notes before class and only gets through half of them. Then tells you to learn the rest on your own. Never finished grading exams and only sends the solutions weeks after the exam. Doesn't follow the textbook at all.
Very nice professor. Interesting course content. Attendance is not mandatory and it is up to you whether or not to attend class. I didnt attend most of the lectures and still got a good grade. He sends out notes so it is easy to self-study, and I prefer this way. Anyway this class is pretty flexible as long as you keep track of things.
The class is only graded on two exams and a final. He only gets through some of the material after coming in late and then continues to run after class is over. Never covers the material fully. Expects you read it on your own what he doesnt cover. Expects you know proofs and puts them on the exams. Takes months to grade. Avoid taking this course.
While Prof. Lennard might be one of the funniest and most entertaining teachers during lectures, he is actually terrible at teaching this course. His exams consist of material not similar to the final. We never got through more than 3/17 pages on a slide show and the rest you do for HW. He send out notes at 3 AM and says review them before class.
Dr. Lennard is a really nice guy. He's funny and kind and at first, it will seem like a great class. However, his lectures make no sense, and he teaches by drawing crazy graphs and pictures that in no way help you to learn what you need to learn to pass the class. You will have to teach yourself the entire course with no notes or in class examples.
Professor Lennard is great. Very entertaining and engaging lectures. Since the class is only graded on three exams, it can be a bit daunting at first, but if you score well on the final, he will make that your final grade. Exams problems are pretty much all taken from homework, so do the homework and you'll be fine.
I absolutely love this man. Took a boring class and made it fun. The class is the hardest class I've ever taken. If you take it bc calc came easy to you before, this will be a big shock. put in the work. do ALL the homework. set aside hours per day dedicated to this class. graded on 2 exams and a final. don't give up hope if you fail the exams
His lectures make no sense, and he teaches by drawing random graphs and pictures that in no way help you to learn. Finals are nothing like what he tries to go and teach you. Considering I had to teach myself the entire course I would say it is a complete waste going to class considering he goes over 2 sliders and you'll learn nothing from it.
He was kind, funny, and I enjoyed going to lecture. However, you will probably be teaching yourself. He constantly cancelled office hours and took forever to respond to emails. The class is only graded off of 3 exams, and he took 2 months to grade our first one. Know the formulas, critical proofs, and do some of the homework and you should be fine.
He is very engaged during lecture and if you can pay attention for 50 mins at a time, the class might go ok. I couldn't and also didn't have time for the homework bc my other classes were hard. I did fine on the tests after cramming. He takes an absurd amount of time to grade tests, which is stressful but I do think he wants his students to succeed
His lectures are pointless and he spends more time making jokes and telling stories than actually teaching. starts 15 min late and runs 15 min past EVERY lecture. Would be a much better theoretical teacher but cant teach how to actually solve a problem. Don't even bother going to him for extra help, he wont help you.
Dr Leonard was a really great guy, but this class is HARD. Tests are not easy (but final will be if you work). Do the homeworks he gives, ask questions, and work with your classmates. I passed, but you could definitely get an A if you dedicate yourself. Hes a great guy and really wants you to do well. BUT dont come in thinking its easy, WORK.
Dr. Lennard is a gem. Consistently supportive of his students and just a phenomenal guy to chat about life with. Be aware that he likes to take his time answering questions, which can be irritating if there are multiple people in line to talk with him. Likely the hardest I have ever worked in a class, but it was absolutely worth it.
This man's lectures make absolutely no sense. You cannot learn anything simply from his lectures and he also does not give answers to homework. He said "you are in calc 3 you should know if your answer is right" as if we ever took this class before. So even if you do the homework, you do not know if you're doing it right.
Avoid. Avoid. Avoid. I'm not joking please do not take this class. Only graded by exams, his lectures are nonsense, and he refuses to give you answers to any homework at all, saying you should have an "intuitive sense of being right." Wasn't given any problems in class that were like the dept. final. My worst experience at Pitt for a class. DON'T.
Spends most of class pacing around saying a bunch of "jokes" and other nonsense having nothing to do with calc. Spends most class time doing proofs/theory and doesn't show how to do the calc. He hasn't given a grade since the first exam in SEPTEMBER. We have had 2 exams after that and a final. I have no idea what my grade is rn...neither does he.
I had to ask for notes from another professor to review for my final because his notes are too messy.
I ended up withdrawing from this class because he makes easy topics seem really hard to understand. Felt like I was on my own. Switched to Calc II- best decision ever. He rambles and jokes most of class and his handwriting is messy and explanations are confusing. Also- whole grade is the average off three tests. I love math and hated this course
Lectures are all theory and proofs so homework and recitation is basically the only way to learn how to practically solve problems. Professor Lennard is a great guy and very accessible with office hours but his lectures sometimes feel like a fever dream.
Often disorganized and late. Lectures are very odd, and often feel insignificant, with lots of proofs that aren't readily used. The homework, however, is absolutely ESSENTIAL to succeeding in this course, however strange it sometimes can be. Does not cover the same material as Calc I & Calc II, and is taught in a very odd way structurally.
Everything you need to know MATH0235 -This class is HARD -Go to class and recitation -Tests are taken from the homework (do ALL of the problems and tests will be easy) -If you fail the first two exams, he will make the final your final grade -Lennard is accommodating if you communicate, and work hard. -Will transform the way you think about math
Dr. Lennard is absolutely incredible! He is a kind and caring person who spreads his excitement for teaching the class every day. I took his honors calc 1+2 class, which focuses on proving things and understanding important concepts instead of just memorizing and applying formulas, and the homework/lectures are challenging and unique.
Very energetic, really likes math. Lectures are disorganized and taught through series of proofs. Midterms have some hard theoretical questions, and months to grade exam. Took the final with no idea of my grade. Ended up teaching myself most of the content. The textbook does a better job. The one nice thing is his grade ranges are 15 points.
The lectures are disorganized, it takes until the end of the semester to understand the structure of the course as he put calc2 before calc1. The prof would not give you certain names of theorems, instead, he would name those theorems by his favorite, which means that you cannot look them up on Google or yt.
Professor Lennard is caring, especially if you attend office time. However he is extremely LAZY. This was a 15 week course, and we had three exams that made up ALL of our grade. Along with that, we took our first exam September 28th and he did not have it graded before the final. If you take him, go to office time and read the book.
You shouldn't (!!!!!) take this class without previously taking calc 2. This is a proof/theorem class with little numbers involved, and we were expected to teach ourselves crucial math concepts. Tests mostly comprise of homework questions, do the homework and ask questions on it. Stay away, lots more frustration than learning done this semester.
Never take this class. This is a warning to all freshman wanting to take this class DONT TAKE THIS CLASS I AM WARNING YOU. Wasted my time. Never grades on time never knew my grade till it was uploaded on peoplesoft.
1. This class can be hard or easy depending on your mathematical background. If you took calculus in high school or, for example, did some math contests, this class will be easy. 2. Dr. Lennard holds humerous and engaging lectures. 3. It takes forever for him to grade the exams. 4. Lots of bonus marks and the exams are pretty straightforward.
Professor Lennard's lectures were rather entertaining and interesting. Yet, he is really bad with getting grades back in time, as I wasn't able to get my grade prior to the final, in a class you only are graded by three exams. He structures class in a way that you can't find a lot of theorems online to study because he gives them obscure names.
Kind but a horrible professor. Lectures & notes are extremely disorganized. Focuses on theory over actual calculus. Midterms are nothing like final. Wastes the first 10min of every class, then runs out of time. Gives long, difficult homework w/ no answers. Wants his students to succeed and is helpful in office hours, but only so much.
Amazing professor, really cares for his students and wants them to succeed. This is a challenging course, but definitely not the hardest math class you'll take at Pitt. Do the homeworks, as the exams will mimic homework questions or theorems proven in class.
Gives funny and enthusiastic lectures that will keep you engaged. The content is difficult since it is an accelerated course and be warned that your grade will only be depended on two midterms, one final, and one course project. Tests will not be curved either. Make sure to try the hw problems and go to to his office hours if you are struggling.
I think that Lennard is a great person who is really passionate about what he does, but not an amazing teacher. I had him for Calculus 0235, and while the class was supposed to be tough, I found that he did not grade assignments, assign homework, and a lack of extra help, outside of visiting him in office hours which were often postponed.
It's hard to stay on track. There is no assigned homework, the class is just taught in proofs. Recitation was almost useless. We did not receive our first grade back until we turned in our final exam. I would only take his class if you consider yourself proficient at calculus. His lectures were very entertaining though never found myself bored.
Took this in 2021, IF YOU ARE A FRESHMAN AND HAVE AP CREDITS FROM CALC AB/BC JUST TAKE MATH 0240 CALC 3. Interesting class but definitely should have just taken calc 3 and saved time/money. But if you want to fast track calc 1/2 I would recommend. Lennard is an engaging teacher, hw is hard but exams were just hw questions.
Dr. Lennard is a funny professor with a lot of personality, but this often comes at the expense of rigor and the amount of material covered in lecture. His expectation on exams is that you only answer questions in his exact style of proofs and any divergence from this form, regardless of mathematical correctness is penalized.
Very enthusiastic about material, always a good vibe in his lecture, uses humour to engage students. Only grades are exam1&2, course project, and final exam. Homeworks are supplementary and used to help you practice. Although i felt that most of homework problems were filler in the sense that he expects u to do them for fun.
