Chris is a very good speech teacher. You do 5 speeches in his class and its not very difficult. He also has a written midterm and final, which are giveaways. But I'd say he's a pretty serious speech teacher overall, but very effective.
This guy was so freakin' boring in his lectures, but there are some funny moments. You do 5 speechs, and midterm/finals. I paid attention and did my work, and scratched out of there with a "C". This guy is a serious speech geek.
He is an easy teacher. If you are going to attend his class, take him in summer.
Chris is a good techer. He really knows his stuff about speech. The 5 speeches you give are fairly easy. As long as you put some effort into the class you should walk out of there with a "B". It is a requirement, so take it and have fun!
This guy seemed like he wanted to teach enthusiasm, but he was never able to get that across from himself. I pulled my speeches out of thin air and still walked out with an A; you simply have to have a little "want-to," and you'll do fine. This class is cake.
Chris is a definete speech geek, but funny. I loathed taking this class, but it really wasn't so bad. He is a great teacher.
Boring Lectures, Grades a little hard, would NOT be my first choice for a teacher, but its not so bad.
Decent professor. Grades fair. Kinda boring, but hey, you're not there for fun, are you? You're just there to get the credits to transfer out of Palomar.
Speech geek for sure, but nice man. grades a little sternly, but then again, I'm horrible in front of a audience. Wouldn't be so bad if speech class, gererally speaking, wasn't so arid.
Tells you everything ahead of time, very clear! Although his grading is pretty hard on speeches!
Chris is a fun teacher...recently married so prob. happier now and although he looks at you like your stupid when you ask a question he explains the assignment very well and grades just like he says he is going to...very clear on how he wants things done...not a fun class but worth it

This class is very helpful. Very clear about assignments and all of them can be viewed on his website. Lectures are boring. Funny and nice guy.
Boring class, Chris is completely uninteresting. I would recomend taking this requirement with another teacher.
He is a really nice guy. Explains the way he wants things done. There is no gray area. Boring class though, especially when you have to sit through speeches.
Chris has a dry sense of humor so you have to be prepared for that. Yes, the speeches are boring, but it's because most of the students are boring when they speak, not the teacher's fault. Chris is very clear on what needs to be done and seems to be a very fair teacher.
Chris takes a subject that many people have a fear of and perpetuates the problem. He is very boring, unhelpful and ruins public speaking for a lot of students. the subject is great, but it takes the right professor to bring it out. Chris is NOT this professor. For your own good, PLEASE take this class with someone else. Brandon Whearty is great!
I avoided this class like the plague until I took Chris Lowry's class. Chris was an excellent teacher who made public speaking fun for the class. Yes, we gave lots of speeches and those could get boring, but Mr. Lowry's lectures were interesting and they were delivered with enthusiasm.
I suggest taking Mr. Lowry's class in the summer. We gave several speeches but he was a fair grader and we were done in six weeks. Nice guy.
Take Mr. Lowry's class. The midterm is tough but he's pretty generous when grading speeches. I always look forward to the question of the day.
At first youd think Chris was a total geek but in the end he turned out awesome! I loved this class, even if he wouldnt leave me alone about joining the speech team :)
he's actually pretty cool. He had us do five speeches that gradually got harder and you can pretty much do them on anything. He grades generously on speeches and there's no other hw than working on speeches. Only a midterm and final exam
Lowry is awesome! Had I realized i would have to give speeches when I enrolled in the class I would have postponed it. Lowry made it easy to give speeches ranging from 3 minutes to 9 minutes in length. I am NOT a public speaker but I did very well- he is a very cool teacher. There are 5 speeches, 1 midterm, a paper, and a final. TAKE THIS CLASS!!!
He's a great teacher
I'm taking Chris right now for Speech 100, and he's one of my coaches on the speech team. He is an amazing teacher that really cares about his students. Because of Chris I have become a MUCH better speaker.
I came into this class thinking there was no way that I would pass. I can hardly get up infront of people and keep my composure let alone give a speech. By my final speech I went up with greet confidence and was able to pull off an A in the class.
He's a great speech teacher that tries to ease you into things. Just be prepared and try your hardest, he's not that hard of a grader in my opinion.
Great Professor! Speech is not a class many people look forward to taking, but it's not that bad. He made the class interesting. I would definitely recommend taking this class from Lowry!
Outstanding teacher! Graded really easy just follow his directions! Good extra credit opportunities and tests are super easy! Public Speaking sucks but in class it wasnt too bad!
Highly recommended. Easy A if you follow instructions and show up on your speech day, even if you mess up on your speeches. Stick to established time limits, rehearse and give sources and it's an easy A. Don't follow instructions or show up on your speech days and don't expect sympathy.

Dont buy the text book! You never use it. He's a good teacher, really into speaking... Don't offend him and he will respect you. My advice is to not go for the extra credit by going to competitions, its really intense and a waste of time. Easy A.
Since most students have to take SPCH 100, take Lowry! He makes it very easy to get through your speeches, while offering a lot of help on improving. He is a great guy that is passionate about teaching and helping students. Since it's a required class, he's a good professor to take.
Easy A if you show up, keep speeches within the time frame and turn in the outlines. I took class during winter intercession (2 weeks) which I strongly recommend instead of the semester length class- especially if you dont like talking in front of groups. We didn't use text, early editions of text are okay if you want to get text anyway.
Lowry is a cool fellow. He's fairly easygoing, not stuck up, but he expects you to do well. He didn't use the textbook whatsoever.
Lowry is a good teacher although sometimes his lectures can get boring and after a while you begin to realize he writes them in his outline format. The class is pretty easy and suprisingly nonstressful for a speech class. He basically reads the text book to you in lectures so there is no need to purchase it.
do not i repeat do not buy the book final was way easy and just keep your speech within the time limit use good eye contact and walk around a lot easy A
Both attendance and the textbook were supposedly mandatory, but I'm not sure anyone ever suffered for either. Chapters 1, 8, and 11 were useful for the midterm... Otherwise, I didn't like the class because of his emphasis on time and organization over the quality of your content and speaking ability.
Chris is a rad guy. He goes out of his way to get the class involved in discussion so it's not just another boring lecture, and he also genuinely wants his students to succeed. I'd definitely take another class from him.
Extremly helpful and simple class as long as you take notes. Easy grader, nice personality, and lets you out early
This class was easy and he was a legit teach. I didnt put that much effort into the class and managed to get an A. I dont think we really used the book much either.
Take this class!!!Highly recommend winter session if you can take it, only 2 weeks.
he's a kind professor who cares about his students. the class is a fun or at least easy way to fulfill a requirement. Just do the work and your gold
He was a really fun teacher. Every day, we'd start class with a little trivia question to get us used to communicating. His lectures cover just about everything in the book, and the only times I cracked that thing open weer for projects and his exams.Tests are straightforward and easy. An uber easy A.
Professor Lowry is a great teacher for students who are concerned about having to take Speech 100. Very laid-back, but enthusiastic about his subject. He gives detailed instructions for each speech or assignment, so expectations are always clear. Really enables students to become more confident in public speaking.
AWesome and engaging teacher, fun to have you actually dont mind being in the class. The assignment teach the subject and keep it understandable. I actually learn alot in this class. and he is a great teacher. highly highly recommended
This has been my favorite class so far at Palomar. He is super enthusiastic about what he is teaching, we did a lot of clss excercises, a collage (my favorite) and a few short writing assignments. His tests were a little difficult compared to what his notes consist of so i would reccommend reading the textbook. He's awesome!
i got a D for not taking the final and not turning in a big project. But his class is awesome I would highly recommend it. I loved how he used videos in his class it really helped. His also really funny and his class was something i looked forward to.
He is always in an energetic mood, and cracks jokes. You have to do 4 speeches, a midterm, video analysis, and the final. Pretty easy if you prepare.
Really cool guy! Puts way too much emphasis on needing the book, but I never used it and still got an A. Very fun class! I really enjoyed all the speeches!
Very good professor. Made the class fun. He's a funny guy and is there to help you when you need it. Highly recommend his class.
Great Professor! i was dreading speech class, but he's so funny and made it easy and comfortable to get up and give speeches! his class is tons of fun and really easy! take it!
Easiest. Class. Ever. Take it over the summer, why waste time on this GE in a 16 week semester? Don't worry about the pace. You're probably going to get an A
very easy class. He will tell you exactly what he expects for your speeches. For those of you worried about speaking in front of the class you will be happy to find out how comfortable you feel in the classroom environment he provides. Come prepared for your speeches and it will be a breeze.
Awesome teacher. Fun class. Cares about his students. You get your grades as soon as you finish your speech. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THAT YOU TAKE HIS CLASS!:D You will not regret it.
Chris is such a sweetheart! I loved taking this class. Like most, I was scared about this class because speech can be intimidating but Professor Lowry taught us how to have a good time with it and how to handle ourselves! I definitely suggest taking this class! It is totally worth it!
he is a great teacher. his class is very fun that keeps you awake and focus during the class.
Very easy. Nice guy, decent teacher. Wish he gave more time in class for student discussion.
Lowry is a pretty good teacher. Do the work and show up for your speech and you'll pass. Fair grader. The only thing I didn't really like about the class is on speech days he would get REALLY uptight, which didn't help if you were nervous. And sometimes when you try to pitch an idea for a speech, he'd try to help you but made you feel stupid.
I really dreaded taking a speech class, but I had to get it down for my degree. Professor Lowry is an excellent instructor. Read your textbook for quizzes and exams, and be prepared on Speech Day. He understands that people are nervous he is very encouraging though. I took this class in the Summer and it has been great. Highly recommend him
He is a really nice teacher. I highly recommend taking him.
Awesome teacher. Loved him so much. He is super helpful and cares about his students. I was really nervous about speaking in front of people but he made the environment fun. Turned out to be my favorite teacher so far!
Extremely rude, misses many days of class, assigns lots of busy work when he should be teaching to make up for the days he isn't there, lectures are not very organized. Then he gets really frustrated when students do not understand the material. He always stops class when people walk in and out. Wish I would have taken it with a different teacher.
Speech 160 was an easy class. You literally turn in about 6 pages of work at the end of the semester, and you get an A. You do, of course, have to observe or participate in speech tournaments, but that's no biggie. Good professor, no problems.
This class was amazing! All of the quizzes are online and he made class really fun. He's really enthusiastic about the class. You should attend class because you need the notes. Always take notes in class. I highly recommend taking him for speech. It's easy to pass the class.
I'll be frank, I very much disliked Professor Lowry's class. His lectures we're rather unclear, and shed little light on the source material. The tests however draw HEAVILY from the source material, which left a poor impression of his own knowledge. That being said, he is a very nice man and if you put in a little effort, you will pass. Easy A.
Very nice and fun teacher! If you attend the class and take good notes, then you won't need the book. There are a few easy 10 point quizzes. Midterm online. Easy final. If you make an effort to attend class and prepare for your speeches, he will like you! But, don't forget your outlines or flashcards- it's his pet peeve!
Test are super easy if you pay attention in class or take notes on your own off the power points on blackboard. Participation points were based off attendance but most people didn't go to class and just showed up for the day they had to speak and still aced the class.
Mr. Lowry is an awesome teacher. I was scared of this class because I'm not good at speaking in front of people but this class actually helped me. All you have to do is take notes, know the basics of public speaking, take about 5 online quizzes, online midterm, in class final and 4 speeches! plus Mr. Lowry is a fair grader and funny. Take him!
If you're going to take Speech, take it with him over the summer. There's 4 quizzes that you would take online. 1 final that is in class. You have to do 4 speeches. I was always afraid of speaking in front of the class but he really helped me a lot on being able to present anything to the class.
Nice guy. Doesn't expect too much out of anyone. Just requires some basic specifics he requests for each speech such as flashcards or outlines. Tests and quizzes were pretty easy given good note taking. Pretty lenient on grading. I hate giving speeches, but this class made it pretty fun for me to do so. It's your time to shine, so make it worth it!
As long as you come to class and put effort into your work, it's an easy A. The book is not necessary; the quizzes are based on lectures and online (even the midterm). You don't need to be good at public speaking to do well. The final is easy and I literally finished in 5 minutes. He is easily one of the nicest professors I have ever experienced.
Professor Lowry was an amazing teacher. He was upfront and clear on what it took to pass the class. Only 2 tests plus the final. Had 4 papers and 2 projects. All extremely easy. His lectures are easy to follow. He is very nice and funny. If you like to skip don't take his class. He will drop you if you miss too many classes.
Easy class, 4 papers that range from 1-4 pages (double spaced). 2 tests and a cumulative final. The material is clear and easy to understand. If you study a little before tests, you should get an A pretty easily. Only opened the textbook once in the semester so don't bother getting it.
He does not like to explain things twice. He can be happy one second, & then the next, he will be all pissed off for little or no reason. His class was an easy A, but that still does not justify why he's rude and crabby at times. Professors like him do not like to admit when they are wrong.
Casual style, pretty cool guy. Can't say much else about him. Quizzes are online, short answer, & easy if you take good notes on the lectures in class. You won't need the textbook, I promise, so don't buy it. (DON'T BUY THE TEXTBOOK!) Five speeches. Final is multiple choice. Attend class, pay attention, do the assignments, and you'll do just fine.
Professor Lowry is a good teacher. He cares about public speaking and wants to see you grow. I think he is a fair grader, and his feedback was easy to understand. I was one of the few students who used the textbook and I liked it, but I do not think you have to use it to get an A. The information in lectures is important if you want to get an A.
He's super laid-back. I was nervous to take speech but he makes me feel more comfortable. He gives great feedback & you get your speech grade on the same day you present. You absolutely can NOT miss your presentation day though. On non speaking days, he just lectures and its pretty boring, but easy. There are 5 total speeches in the semester.
I think Professor Lowry is great. Public speaking can be super scary, but he gives you the tools to get through it. There are five speeches and they get longer as the semester goes on. There are also some online quizzes and tests. Overall good class.
Gets frustrated easily and good at creating miscommunication (bad combo). Not clear instructions and he doesn't seem to understand students questions. Had his 115 class. Not a tough grader but I didn't like the way test questions are worded. Provides resources, don't buy book. Lots of busy work. Feels like high school class.
Took the 4 week course and it was a great experience. I learned a lot based on his lectures. He's very laid back and makes the environment comfortable. Was a pleasant experience! Easy A if you do the work and show up to class!
Professor Lowry's class will help you become a better speaker. It's important you take notes in class. Follow his steps and structure for speeches and do your best and you will get a good grade. Important to keep to the time limits - going over or under can greatly impact your grade. He can be cranky sometimes - don't take it personally!
He is a very good professor. I was so scared to take this class because I didn't like public speaking but honestly he made it to easy. I will definitely miss this class and all the people in it, Professor Lowry makes the class feel like a family and towards mid semester everyone is cheering you on, it is just great. TAKE HIM!
Chris Lowry was an awesome professor. I personally am scared to death of speaking in front of people, but Chris helps with nerves and gets the whole class engaged! He also gives an easy lab option to skip the final speech. Very positive experience from this class.
Great prof!!! honestly hate public speaking, he truly did make class very comfortable and easy for students, gives good feedback and doesn't overwhelm you. show up to class no homework besides working on speeches, online quizzes all common sense. Overall amazing class! Great Man!
Lowry is a great professor and as long as you write your speeches following the formats you'll get a good grade. Even if you hate public speaking and just have to take the class for credit I recommend Lowry as your professor. The class was laid-back and he made everyone feel comfortable.
Very tough grader on speeches (marked down for phone in pocket, hats, etc). Moody professor but decent if you get on his good side. Don't buy textbook because all answers can be find online. Do what he says and prepare for speeches and its an easy A.
Lowry is overall a really cool guy & makes speech more enjoyable. Make sure to always show up on your speaking days or else you'll get a zero. He typically keeps class light-hearted & fun. He gives quizzes pretty frequently that are straight out of the textbook (but he always puts the same information in the slides so the book isn't really needed)
Easy A if you care enough. Multiple choice quizzes, short speeches (longest is 6-8 min), lectures based on chapters, optional 1 credit class to get out of final speech. Stay within the time limit window on speeches, show up, read the chapter summaries to ace quizzes, study lectures to pass midterm & final, and you're golden.
Professor Lowry is a chill guy with a pretty darn easy class too. There's only three multiple choice exams, including the final, and an individual presentation as well as a group presentation. The material isn't difficult to grasp either, making this is a fun class for any Comm. major or simply somebody looking to grab 3 extra units.
I took a summer intersession class (4 wk.) and there was a speech every week. It was very high-paced and during those weeks you did nothing but speech. 4 speeches, 5 quizzes, 2 exams. Quizzes and exams were easy if you read the book. Very nit-picky on speeches (moving too much, overtime/undertime, etc.). Kind of grumpy during speech days.
He is extremely moody, and on many occasions really rude towards students. He lectures all of class but none of his lectures actually help for the tests. Tests are based on the book and hits on nothing he lectures on.
Enthusiastic teacher about learning. Gives interesting lectures useful for the criteria. A semi easy grader but demonstrates what he wants with an outline and rubric
Prof Lowry is very laid back and makes this class a lot less intimidating. I hate public speaking but I feel very comfortable in his class. If you follow the speech guidelines and stay within time frame then speeches are easy. There are online quizzes and one final exam but everything is relatively easy if you put in the effort. Chill class, easy A
Laid back and casual. He is clear and understanding of the material, easy A. There is a video analysis essay based on the demonstrative speech you film of yourself. Midterm was online, final exam in class (multiple choice, make sure you bring a scantron). Persuasive speech towards the end (6-8 min), but sign up for SPCH 160 if you want to opt out
Professor Lowry is amazing. Do not hesitate to take this class, very easy to pass as long as you attend all the classes and do all speeches.
Literally one of the worse professors I've ever had. His lectures are ridiculously boring and sometimes he just becomes super mean?? and like insults students. The classwork is super easy and a joke but I absolutely hated the class and him. This class was so bad that I changed my major from communications to environmental science lol
This guy is an amazing professor
Professor Lowry is SO nice. He makes this class enjoyable and I learned a lot. While the information is almost common sense, I still felt like I was learning. I now know what attribution is, and when I have a self-serving bias. He seems like he actually cares about his students. He wants us to succeed, and is a really nice person.
Lowry made me more confident speaking to even a group of 3 people. He's incredible for feedback, great lectures, and the only homework is preparing for speeches, quizzes, midterm, and final. He gives outlines for each speech, so you know exactly what he wants. If you need to miss a day, don't let it be a speaking day. That's all he's picky about.
Chris Lowry is an awesome professor. He makes his class enjoyable and I learned a lot. I am a second language student with a lot of straggling of speech class, but with his support and his suggestions, I was able to pass this class with a beautiful A. As long as you follow the formats, you'll get a good grade. I recommend Lowry as your professor.
The class was straightforward and fairly easy yet uninspired. You could tell Lowry's been teaching for awhile since lectures felt as if he was going through the motions. Beware, lecture are boring but class attendance is important. As long as you follow the directions for the speeches and put effort in, you'll do fine.
I am terrified of public speaking, but Professor Lowrys class was bearable. His lectures are clear and easy to write notes on. Just show up, prepare for your speeches and you will get an A. I also feel more confident speaking In front of large groups! Take the class
4 speeches if you don't take extra course, all doable and gives clear feedback. All test questions can be solved using common sense but reading does help. Personally not a fan of him, acted unprofessionally in regards to a topic of concern.
Overall, it was an enjoyable class. Appreciated him as a professor and how engaged he was throughout the entire semester. He provides great constructive feedback and explained his expectations for each assignment thoroughly. If you're taking speech, take his class, you won't regret it! Awesome professor!
If you're wanting to get rid of your fear of public speaking, this is the professor for you! The assignments have clear instructions, the connect textbook used in the online coursework helped me retain a lot of information that I will carry into the real world.
I took speech 100 with Professor Lowry online and for the most part enjoyed the class. There are a lot of speeches with outlines and peer feedback. This is definitely not a class you can slack off in or not pay attention to due dates. I also took his speech 160 class to avoid the final exam in speech 100.
This was a fun class. The professor has a clear grading criteria, so If you abide by that then you will be fine. Don't wait until the last minute to write your speeches. Make sure to read the chapters in its entirety, so you can pass the quizzes and tests. His video lectures help you understand the material too. Take him!
Professor Lowry did an awesome job of holding his class online. He was very organized, all the assignments have clear grading rubrics, and he gave great constructive feedback. He gives plenty of time to get speeches and assignments done, and even if you can't get it in on time he works with you on deadlines.
Professor Lowry gives great feedback and clear grading criteria. He is willing to help those who help themselves. Some of the speeches required heavy research, but he gives plenty of time to prepare.
Took Prof Lowry's intersession Speech 100 course. Very straightforward, just make sure you do the weekly readings and practice your speeches in advance and you'll be fine. There are weekly quizzes and two tests that are easy if you read the content.
Professor Lowry is a gem. It is so rare to find a professor that is willing to change. During the course he changed his class to be more equitable and was so considerate. He really cares.
I hate public speaking so I struggles in doing well but not because of him! He was so encouraging and kind and very clear on how he would grade. We had a couple group projects but still presented them separately. He is a really awesome professor and would take any of his classes again! He works well with shy students like myself.
Need an easy, online speech class? Take SPCH 100 with Professor Lowry. He provides you with everything you need in order to successfully pass the class. There are about 4-5 speeches you'll have to record and submit, but he grades clearly and constructively and allows plenty of time to prepare. I highly recommend!
Taking his class has dramatically helped me with my public speaking skills, and I hate speaking in front of people. He provides great feedback and grades fair as long as you follow the rubric. If you're scared of speaking, I highly recommend taking him. He responds to emails fast and I can tell that he's very nice and caring.
Professor Lowry was really nice made the class pretty easy. There was no homework other than preparing for your speech. Speeches were timed and 5 pts were taken off every minute you go below or over the time limit, but other than that, the speeches weren't hard. For quizzes, midterm, and final, the answers were straight from his lectures.
Class was relatively easy, especially online. The speeches were very straightforward and not too difficult to put together. The grading was never too harsh, he gave good feedback for improvement on future speeches. There was not very much hw, couple quizzes, and discussions every now and then, and only 2 speeches were research heavy.
I liked this professor, just do the homework and your speeches and you'll be fine. Actually try and put some effort, you're guaranteed to pass.
Great teacher, grades fairly, and there's a lot to learn in this class. Expect to read on average two chapters a week, and three at most. Speaking is a nerve-wracking thing for most, but you learn a lot in his class on how to deliver a good speech. Highly recommend this professor for online and in-person speech classes.
Easy grader and provides solid feedback. However, for a class that pushes for organization and structure, this is one of the most disorganized classes I have ever taken. Assignment instructions are in completely different modules, and often times the rubric will have different requirements compared to the assignment details. Awful online experience
I can't speak to his character as my class was online, but the course itself was really easy. He gave clear feedback on my speeches and overall I didn't ever feel stressed about a deadline or assignment. Never read the textbook, pretty straightforward.
I took a winter async class, ended up failing, but he was really good - evidently cared about and wanted students to succeed
Professor cares about his subject and cares very much for participation. Can be intimidating and to put it nicely.. was... passionate about participation. I found him intimidating when I asked for help, and saw other nervous students in a similar disposition during speeches. Strong willed students will do well in this class.
