Not a bad class...but your grading is based completely on 3 all essay tests
No Comments
Great analogies- makes philosophy easy to explain.
The class is interesting and Maloney makes the course work easy to learn. As long as you attend class and pay attention you'll do well, and learn something too.
just make sure you are there for the quiz...other than that it is not bad
Easy class. Be there for all the quizzes for credit. There are 3 exams and no hmwk. Even if you don't pay attention in class the notes and or TAs help you out a lot.
He looks like Blue from Old School. "You're my boy Blue!" haha
Boring. I love philosophy but his teaching makes it seem really boring and like he has no idea what he's talking about. I have his class at noon, the height of my energy, and he makes me fall asleep.
My god I hate that class. Maloney is so boring and gets off topic alittle more than often. But i recomed going to class just for the quizes you don't have to pay attenchion just take the quizes and go to the study sessions. Otherwise the class sucks.
The only thing that got me through that class was doing the crossword with the hottest freshman...
This class is the easiest class in the world! All these people that complaining obviously can't appriecaite an easy A when you find one. You act like reading the newspaper and doing the crossword the whole class is so bad. I paid attention about a total of 10 mins each class and got an A
Maloney is a bit odd and that's reflected in teaching, class is boring, not very difficult especially if you go to TA study sessions before the tests, exams are essay style so be warned if you don't like that sort of test
probably the most boring class i've ever had to sit through. i fell asleep during that class every single day, no joke. the only reason i go to class is so i dont miss quizzes. just go to the review sessions once a week and take the quizzes and you'll be straight. easy A. appreciate it.
Mind matter and God... oh by goodness, very very boring. He jumps around a lot and it doesn't always connect with what is going to be on the test. Quizes a lot so you need to sit through the class. But if you do bring some good reading material or sleep.
Mind, matter and g-d. Sleep through the lectures, take the attendance quizzes, do the paper (so easy), go to the review sessions, get an A in the class. Here's a hint, to study for the tests write the essays out before hand. It's just recollecting then SO EASY!
M, M & G was very boring. Maloney repeats everything at least 20 times...I slept through many classes-but still got an A. Just do all the pop quizzes and tests, it will equal an A.
M,M&G... like everyone else has said, very boring but easy. Probably one of the more annoying teachers I've had. He is very long winded and takes an hour and 15 minutes to say what could have been said in about 10. And he's very repetitive and feels the need to put emphasis on EVERY word.
Like its said before this: boring, boring. I slept through class everytime. Attend class to take the attendance quizzes(easy), go to reviews before the exam, and do the paper.
AWFUL
Class was boring, but easy altogether. Exams were essays, but not difficult if you paid attention. Final exam was multiple choice, but he does give random quizzes, both for class credit and extra credit.
Maloney is so crazy its hilarious. he like randomly does crazy and loud voices. its just really crazy. its the most boring class ever but not alot of hw

uhmm...how many times did i fall asleep?

He really needs to make it more interesting so that we won't get so sleepy.
I don't like this class. Some of his examples are ridiculous when he's trying to get some philosophical idea across. The class seems easy enough though, but lectures are hard to get through.

Everytime I enter this class, I want to kill myself for signing up for it. Probably the worst class I have taken in all my years of schooling. Would contemplate death over this class.

he is way too long winded, he starts talking about Socrates and he goes off on these explanations that no one gets....most people sleep through this class
The only thing I've learened from this man in this class is that I havn't learned a thing. He just likes to hear his own voice and rambles and goes on stupid tangents about nothing. Don't take for the love of God!
Class was a bit boring, easy to sleep in. He's interesting and brings up good points and valid arguments but the class is too long and repetative for the material it's covering. Say it once, make it make sense and move on!
the tests are true and false. uh
All i have to say guys is...LIONS, TIGERS, and BEARS!!
Wow, the most boring class and professor ever. He talks about the most random things and they don't make sense. Lions, tigers, and bears.. lmao.. twinkies and brocolli.. STAY AWAY! This class is NOT interesting.
Mind Matter and God, Maloney is a funny guy, but I slept through it every day...
so i know people say yeah he is boring but its an easy B...well i saw that and thought i could deal...but holy crap that class makes me want to kill myself...well kill him! some kid brought a pillow to class and got applauded by the T.A.!
this class is really boring but way easy...there is a lot of extra credit and you just have to go to class the day before the exam you you'll do fine if you just look over your notes like once
This class was really boring. I went almost everyday just in case there was a pop quiz, which aren't too hard. However, I spent class time watching Family Guy and the Simpsons on my friend's IPOD... which was much more interesting than hearing of Lions, Tigers, and Bears. Do the extra credit! That's the only way I'll pass the class
Pretty much the most boring class you'll ever take, but an easy A if you take all the quizzes or do the extra credit paper. It is VERY worth it to do the extra credit b/c you wont even have to take the final and still keep an A
Super boring class, but is an easy A if you do the extra credit paper and show up on quiz days.
This class was very boring. I didnt learn a single thing because i slept throught every single class. His tests are pretty easy and THis really is an easy A class if you take the quizes and do well on the test and do the optional paper. But i would not recommend it to anyone unless you need a grade booster.
wow...dont take this class...may be the worst class ever. you cant stay awake. he is the worst teacher ever. Extra credit paper makes the class somewhat better, but if you cant make the optional review for the paper...you are not going to do so well.
Hard class. Hard to understand material. Hard to stay awake during lecture. His vocal habits were somewhat humorous but...Chris Evans the TA should teach the class, he's the man. I don't recommend taking this class.
Very boring, but very easy. All the tests and quizzes are ridiculously simple, theyre just true and false questions. I literally fell asleep in every single class and still got an A on everything. Just pay attention during the review classes right before the tests and do the extra credit paper. Easiest A of my college career.
Maloney himself is a very good man, honest person. He has a tendency to ramble about one topic. Do the optional paper with help from a writing tutor and you have an A in the bag. Doing the extra credit stuff helps too. Only have 3 exams, i got a D on all 3 and still managed to pull an A in his class because of the X-credit & optional. It's not hard.
MALONEY'S LECTURES WERE VERY LOOONG AND DETAILED BUT THE TESTS/QUIZZES ARE ALL TRUE/FALSE AND ONLINE QUIZZES
Very boring lectures; hard to stay awake especially if you get an earlier class. Class isnt too difficult. Final is not cumulative.
Class was easy, I only went when there was a quiz and got an A, and I slept through the classes I went to. He is a really nice guy and knows what he is talking about, but the class is really boring.
Lions and tigers and bears oh my this profesor and class is boring! It's an easy A/B...you don't even have to listen to him as he rambles on 1 slide using the same examples for 15+ minutes...my advice, bring a pillow and sit in the back because there are online pop quizzes you have to look out for so attendence is needed.
easiest class ive ever taken. highly recomended
This professor is so easy. Your entire grade is based on true/false quizes and exams. You just need to make sure to come to class on the days he administers quizes and otherwise you don't even need to go. All of his lecture notes are online and they are true/ false!!! It doesn't get any easier than that!
Dr. Maloney is a very nice man and a good teacher. The subject matter is interesting if you're into philosophy, but even then it is often very difficult to focus due to the lecture hall nature of the class.
Easiest class in the world. I could have failed the final and gotten an A.
This class was pretty easy. I got a C but would have done better if i wouldnt have missed a lot of the quizzes. The key to this class is going everyday and getting good grades on the online quizzes (which are easy and you have 2 hours to find the answers on the slides online). Go to review sessions before all big tests
Mind, Matter and God was THE WORST class I've taken at the UofA. He's an AWFUL teacher -- too hard, confusing, and boring for a Gen ed. DO NOT TAKE IT!!
The 3 people below me all got C's because they gave no effort and/or truly do not belong in college due to lack of intelligence. It is a very easy A. Yeah, Maloney has crazy hair and u don't know what he's saying. Go to the review session before the test and the TAs give u all the answers. The TAs are awesome, that class has like a 20/100 pt curve
horrible class. boring, doesn't make sense, useless.
Very compelling.
The Class is very easy you only you have only true and false test.
Maloney sucks! His class is so pointless! Don't ever take it, unless you have a high tolerance level!
Don't take this class if you don't plan on going to lecture...he gives quizzes...they are easy but if you don't take them it will hurt your grade. His lectures will get you sidetracked and he only goes over 1 slide per class. If you go to TA's reviews and read the book you can get an A.the class is easy as long as you GO, you don't have to listen.
No one ever knows what he is talking about in his lectures. Find another teacher if you can. An A is managable but going to class is a drag.
This class is pointless. The only reason to go to class is so you won't miss any quizzes..which by the way you need for a good grade. The teacher spends half an hour to, sometimes, the whole period on just one slide! He is hard to understand, especially with the weird outbursts he has. And, no matter what, he always brings up a twinkie and brocoli
Class is very boring but you have to go for the quizzes which are easy. A is possible but you have to study for the tests and go to reviews not a just going to come to you
FUNNY
He does not know how to teach anything. He goes on one slide for 45 minutes, and no one knows what he's talking about. people are either on there computers, listening to their ipods, or sleeping! This class SUCKS!
The man makes no sense... absolutely none. Attendance is highly suggested because he gives out surprise quizzes. Ian, the TA, is the only one who makes sense, go to his review sessions but avoid the class if you can.
The teacher was an interesting fellow, although his lectures were far worse than watching paint dry. If you enjoy the material its a good call otherwise just go to class so you can take the pop quizzes. The tests are easy as pie if you study the guides he gives before each. Not tough, but pretty awfully boring. Would recommend if ur out of choices
I.... kind of liked him. His enthusiasm is sweet, although I must admit the lectures are pretty murky. Show up to class, go over the slides, go to the review sessions, and you'll have an A in the bag. As for actually learning stuff in class, it's all about Matilda, you know.
The professor is really nice and well answer your emails promptly. You have to go to class just in case a quiz is given or else you can't make it up. Ian the TA holds study sessions that are very helpful that make you pass the test. The class is fun if you take it with a friend. The class grade consists of quizzes and exams, NO PAPERS!
This class is the best trad 104 out there. Extremely easy. No need to buy the book. You must go to class everyday to take the easy quiz online. He offers extra credit. All tests are completely true or false. Just go to the review session before the test that is put on by one of the TAs and you will be fine. Class is boring, so just sleep though it.
He had good examples to explain concepts which were later on the test. So if you can get out of bed, make it to class, and listen to a boring lecture for an hour and fifteen minutes it's an easy A.
he just rambled on and on. basically a useless class, but interesting if you actually care and listen to the lectures. otherwise theyre very boring
He is a good guy. It is not easy to understand him but if you go to the reviews before exmas his TA will explain everything again. Just go to class and take the online t/f quizzes and you are set with an easy A class
WOW! he is a crazy man! but, if you want an EASY A for just going to class... he's your guy! I'm getting an A and all I do is sit her on the computer and NOT pay attention. just go to the review before the test. don't even try to listen to him because he goes on tangents that are pointless!
****ucker!!!
You have to go to class in case he gives a quiz, but I absolutely dreaded going because he was SOO boring. The reviews given by the TA's are helpful but I still ended up guessing on the 50 question true and false tests. Take a different trad, there are much better ones offered!
Not very interesting-
This class is super boring. I got an A because I was in class for the majority of the pop-quizes he gave and id well on the tests. A lot of people got bad graes though. GO TO THE REVIEW BY THE TA'S THEY PRACTICALLY TELL YOU THE ANSWERS
Maloney is a cool guy. If you want to get an A, just go to class so that you are there for the pop quizzes (which you have an entire day to do online!!!) and attend the reviews before the exams. No need to listen in class though. Bring a comp. and dvd or game, but GO! The only tools you need are his online powerpoints and the TA reviews sessions.
Mind Matter and God is an easy class. I just studied two days before the test and got an A+! Its an easy class, but you have to show up. Lots of people sleep in class, Maloney is pretty boring.
Wow. Most boring class in the world. I wish I hadn't taken it. The tests feel impossible. You have to go to class because he is sneaky and gives pop quizzes when you least expect them. Just bring your computer and do other stuff. It's too hard to pay attention.
The class is very boring but if you read the slides and go to review sessions you can do good on the 100 true or false exams!!!
SO BORING! THIS CLASS IS MY MOST BORIG CLASS! I HAVE TO TRY SO HARD TO STAY AWAKE AND IT HARDLY WORKS! his tests are NOT that easy unless you study and go to the review sessions
this class sucks!!! don't take it!!!!!! you will literally fall asleep everyday and never pay attention. Christopher just keeps talking and talking about stuff that does not make sense. The Tests Suck and the quizzes are retarded!!!!!
Great blow off class. Attendance is mandatory because he gives pop quizzes. Sometimes 4 classes in a row. just sit there and watch movies on your laptop. Easy to get an A.
HE is very smart. really philosophical will explain to the tiniest of detailes and then repaet those details in different ways. thats the only way it can get boring because the lectures are sooooo in depth. Tests are easy though all true or false (100 ?'s) but you still get partial credit for missing answers. TA daniel sanderman is superman!
I got an A on the first 2 exams and I barely studied, and I got a B on the final w/o studying at all. He gives a ton of extra credit. Just don't get any attendance penalties. Bring your laptop to class for entertainment or you'll fall asleep. As long as you go to class everyday, it's an easy A.
This is by far the most useless class I have yet to experience. His tests are 100% true/false, and they have little, if anything, to do with lecture. His slides are pointless. It was an easy-ish class, but torture at 9:30am. Make sure to go to class everyday, and be absolutely sure you have something to do for an hour and 15 minutes!! SOOOO boring!
Maloney seems like a nice man and means well, but if you aren't interested in Philosophy, you will take nothing from his class. The class is EXTREMELY EASY. Ridiculous amounts of extra credit mean you can get an A with your eyes closed or or just surf your laptop for the 75 minutes, however, you must go to every class to be able to take quizzes
AWFUL! tests are soooo hard got 60's on all of them with intense studying. you have to go and you fall asleep every class. Not an easy a that everyone said it was.
Im sitting in Maloney's class right now. Its 1 hour and 15 minutes long and were only 45 minutes in. I feel like i have been here for at least 2 hours. Do not take, him talking for over an hour is more potent than sleeping gas.
Very boring n mind numbing. Bring a laptop or homework to class to work on because the class is 1 15 mins and it seems like forever. Tests are T/F, review days help bc the TAs answer the study guide which are the questions. Tricky exams but its not impossible. Take the quizzes in groups to get 100s n each quiz has 4 EC pts so its an easy A overall
The class is long so bring a laptop. You have to attend because that's the only way to get the quiz and each is worth 4 pts. extra credit plus they drop the two lowest grades. The reviews help for tests and they are always true/false. Not a difficult class but don't start talking, he will stop the class.
Maloney is horrible! There are 3 tests that are 100 T/F questions and you have to attend lectures because he will randomly assign quizzes that require a ticket you get in class that day. If you miss the quizzes you also miss out on the extra credit. His lectures are also extremely boring! I never paid attention in class and don't recommend it.
Would not recommend this class! The tests are extremely hard because they are 100 questions entirely True/False. There are review sessions, however there's a lot on the tests that aren't included in the review. Lectures are awful!
I don't know what everyone is complaining about. I sit in the back of the class for every class and I have a 97% right now. I never pay attention to his class or read the material. He hands out so much extra credit to a point where it is impossible to fail. I did ok (C's, B's) on my 100 T/F exams but the extra credit brought me all the way back up.
Easy class. If you go to class, pay attention, and take some basic notes, you'll do fine. The TAs offer a review session every week which is pretty helpful. And there's plenty of extra credit opportunities. But you have to be in class to get any of them.
Dr. Maloney was a really good professor. I enjoyed his class so much. The quizzes were really easy, but only if you attend lecture. Daniel helps a lot if you need it. I never spoke to Dr. Maloney but I am pretty sure he is just as nice. I would find myself LOLing at his jokes and examples about "Matilda" I want to take another class of his.
Maloney gave so much extra credit it wasn't even funny, 4 pts. per quiz and if he is late to class, which you get points deducted for being, he might give extra credit. The quizzes were easy. I got a 73% on the final and got an A. Bring a laptop, save the powerpoints (which he puts online) to your computer and work on other stuff if you want.
Lectures are unbearably boring. You WILL fall asleep. Maloney seems nice enough, and can be entertaining at moments, but it is impossible to pay attention to him and his jargon! The test are ridiculously hard, and the study guides/review sessions do not help. The TAs Helen and Daniel are excellent. They should teach the course instead.
Even though he sounds like he could be really funny, his class is 99% lecture and I am everything BUT an auditory learner. The material's interesting and he seems like a cool guy. If you attend class and put some effort into studying you'll do alright.
His lectures rank among the top 10 most boring things you will do in college. However, simply going to class and taking the pop quizzes he assigns (you have to be in the class that day in order to take the quiz) will be enough to get you at least a B. Don't try to understand what he says in lecture, just go to the review sessions before the tests
Maloney isn't a bad teacher, just extremely boring. Don't try to take anything from him lectures because you won't. He tends to say some pretty off-the-wall things though, so go to class expecting to hear something ridiculous and you might find something worth a laugh or two.
If you enjoy philosophy, you will enjoy this class. If you don't, you won't. Maloney isn't the most exciting professor, but then again, philosophy is a hard subject to teach with wild demonstrations or off the wall lectures. It's about thinking. Maloney respects everyone and answers questions thoughtfully. What more can you ask from a Gen Ed class?
If you like philosophy you would probably enjoy this class. If you don't you wont. I don't. He is pretty eager to teacher and very enthusiastic. But he is only eager because he loves philosophy, that doesnt help students. Its not too hard, just go the the review sessions, the TA that teaches that makes sense...unlike him.
The dude loves the sound of his voice. You have to attend lecture, which is him walking around on a stage talking about who knows what. I'm a good student and I tried so hard to understand him, but nothing made sense 10 min into his lectures. The only way people pass are the review sessions because he doesn't teach them.
Super Easy class. His tests are 100 T/F ?s which aren't too tricky. He also does gives out pop quizzes which means you have to attend class, however you automatically get 4 EC points for every quiz (I had like 34 EC points at the end). He is nice, enthusiastic, and energetic but can be boring (bc of the material). His Grad. T.A's were very helpful.
His lectures are hard to follow, he tends to rant. Go to lecture for the pop quizzes (you get EC for taking it!) Bring stuff to lecture to keep you awake. Tests are 100 T/F, a little tricky but go over the reviews, shouldn't be too bad. Average a 78ish w/o studying. No papers & no hw!
This professors lectures are worse than horrid...he is not easy to follow, nor is his teaching style effective. Go to class for pop quizzes, but other than that this professor is horrible.
This class is horrible. This class reminds me of middle school. You aren't allowed to leave the room go to the bathroom or you will loose points, you can't come late or leave early or you will loose points. Hello! We are adults and are paying for this stupid class, I think we can decide if we need to leave early or use the rest room.
Honestly this was one of the easiest classes i have ever taken. People complain because they don't want to go to class but you do not have to pay attention when there. I would watch movies during class just to get the extra credit and then cram right before a test and i ended with an A. I never listened to one of his lectures and still got an A.
IF YOU ARE ABLE TO CHANGE OUT OF THIS CLASS, DO IT! This was the worst class I have ever taken, and the only class I have gotten a C in. The senile professor is impossible to understand and lectures make you fall asleep. What's even better is that you can't use the restroom even if its an emergency without having points deducted. go to the reviews
Very enthusiastic about his subject, but content is not very exciting. THe class period is too long, so you start to drift off after a little bit....
Really horrible professor. One of the worst ramblers I've ever come across. Stay way from this class.
This lecture makes me fall asleep instantly. Bring homework for other classes to do while Maloney babbles on. The exams are pretty easy if you take notes during class and have any intelligence at all. He's a nice guy, and reminds me of a cartoon character. But, I wouldn't take his class again.
the secret to this class is attending the review sessions. yes, maloney is crazy but both of his TA's are super helpful. go to lecture because of the quizzes he gives (you do them online after class but need to get the code in class) but don't worry about paying attention.
This guy not only looks like the lion from Madagascar, when he talks he sounds like hes elmo going through puberty. Don't even think about going to the bathroom in his class. he will freak out on you and stop class just to call you out and tell you your parents did a bad job raising you for not teaching you Blatter control. DONT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!
Professor Maloney's class can be really funny at times because he uses some ridiculous metaphors to help you understand the material. If you pay attention, you will do well. Plus there is a ton of extra credit!!
Fight the urge to fall asleep in the midst of seemingly neverending lecture, because if you listen closely you will definitely find yourself unable to control your laughter about his ridiculous comments and examples. OLD AND YOUNG WOMAN! MATILDA! ORACLE AT DELPHI! LEO THE LION! seriously , it was an extremely easy A, there is so much extra credit
This is a pretty easy class but it is incredibly boring. If you take notes and copy everything from the powerpoint, you'll do fine on the tests. He shoves extra credit down your throat so go to class and take advantage of the extra credit quizzes. If you do, you'll end up with 130% in the class by the end of the year before the final like me.
You do sometimes get bored since class lasts 1.5 hours, but go to class listen to what he says--it can be pretty fascinating. His jokes are funny too. It's easy to get a good grade in this class, that allows the student to worry less about grades, and more about understanding the material. I left this class with a new perspective on life.
I couldn't stop laughing in the first day of class....there's something about this guy....Easy A!
if you go to class you are guaranteed a good grade.
ONE WORD...CRACKED OUT!
Maloney is a man that rambles on and on. There is no homework ever, just ten quizzes and three exams. Go to class because that is how you get extra credit points. I got 70's on all the exams, but went to class and got an A. None of the exams/quizzes are in class, so make sure you know a lot of people going into this class!
Went to class everyday! Need to go, that's how you get extra credit. That helped me so much. Quizzes and exams were set up for you to fail. 5 questions per page and not being able to go back to change your answer isn't good. I'm a straight A student and had difficulty in this class. Passed with an A thanks for extra credit.
Go to all of the review sessions with the TA and go to class for an extra credit point each class. Don't listen to what Maloney says....he makes no sense. The tests are impossible. Extra credit is the only thing that can save your grade!
Professor Maloney is brillant. He rambles on but if you can stay awake, he really knows his stuff. I enjoyed his lectures because they were interesting. The test and quizzes were hard but the extra credit will help you a lot. Also go to all the review sessions!
Extremely knowledgable, very entertaining lectures. High level of concept comprehension is a must to pass quizzes and exams. Should attend all lectures for the extra credit that can come in handy. Although I have never been interested in any topic romotely close to Philosophy, I highly recommend taking this course.
He rambles a bit but if you listen you can learn a lot without even opening the book. Go to lecture for extra credit. The tests are on d2l and ridiculously easy. Everyone fails them so they're curved. He gives optional extra credit quizzes, again because people fail the tests. I ended the semester with around 100 extra credit points.
Professor maloney's classes are worthless. Going to class is only worth while for extra credit points. But I literally tuned out everything he said because the sound of his voice is so irritating. This class is easy but you won't learn anything.
Go to lecture to get extra credit, but dont listen to him, he makes no sense at all. I learned nothing from this class, but its an easy A becasue he curves everything and gives a****ton of extra credit
Lectures are torture but necessary for extra credit. The class is easy but seriously I've never had a worse prof.
Easy class. I am sure Dr. Maloney has been teaching the same lectures for 10 or 20 years. The class size keeps getting bigger and bigger, no doubt, but it is the same stuff. You will not learn philosophy or how to improve your thinking. You will learn some silly cartoon version of what great philosophers once said. What a waste of time.
The lectures are odd, Maloney likes to ramble and it's hard to understand everything but well worth the extra credit points so go to all of them and stay the whole time. everything is online. the quizzes are really easy i got a B on my first one with out studying.theyre set up so that u cant cheat. it is a really odd class but it's not the worst
Terrible class if you want to learn/understand/have fun. Great class if you need to be on facebook all morning. Extra credit for going to class, relativly easy tests. SO SO EASY to get a good grade if you need one. Just don't expect to understand the prof.
Great, strong spoken lecturer. Moloney may ramble a bit, but he is always very enthusiastic, yelling and screaming about philosophy. rather funny actually
Its hard to find motivation to attend this class. Going to class is extremely boring and when i do attend, i just listen to music. However, it is extra credit and this class is easy. So if your going to take this class, take it with friends because all the quizes and exams are online
One of the most boring classes I've ever taken. This man can ramble to no end. Even if I had interest in the subject, I still don't think I would be able to endure the monotonous lectures. Besides the boring lectures, his tests are fairly easy if you have the power points up and a friend to work with.
This is the most boring class I have ever taken. Honestly, if you go to the lectures and just answer the clicker questions you can get a TON of extra credit. I barely paid attention in class and ended up with an A+. The quizzes and tests are open note/book which is awesome. If you do one thing in this class, go to the lectures!
The easiest class at the U of A. No essays or homework. All the quizzes and tests are online, and the answers are in the Powerpoints. CTRL + F is your friend :) It is not necessary to buy the book; I didn't and I ended up with over 9000% in the class. Some people are saying the lectures were boring, but IMO they were actually pretty
Really boring, but really easy. Just go to class, it's extra credit. If you actually pay attention you will do fine, if you don't pay attention you will still be fine. I got over 100% in the class with extra credit. Never looked at the book. All the answers are online or in his powerpoints.
Really easy class, didn't go for two months and still ended with an A. Go to the review sessions if you want and use common sense, it's not that hard. People read too much into the class. Maloney is really nice though and energetic in his lectures, that doesn't mean he'll keep you awake though!
Most boring class I took this semester. The class topic is interesting and the readings are interesting...but the class itself is a snore fest. I cannot seem to get myself to listen to the teacher for more than fifteen minutes. I wouldn't attend class if it didn't give me extra credit (which I need). I'd recommend not taking this class.
Incredibly boring class, but incredibly easy! I never pay attention in there and still get A's on my work, plus there is extra credit for attending class! If you're looking for an easy gen ed, I would highly recommend this class.
Mind, Matter, God course. I heard it use to be super easy, no essays and summaries. This year professor decided to change it up. He has lecture summaries very often, and now the exams are at least 800+ word essays over topics that he gives you and then chooses one of the 3 the day of. Making you have to study triple. DO NOT TAKE THIS.
BORING AS HELL. You will not understand anything unless you pay attention, 2 essays (800 words) exams in class! Final is online. Quizzes are easy, take it with a friend and you will survive that class!
He rambles on about nothing all class and then expects you to be able to write huge essay tests about a topic. Clicker questions in class for extra credit so you basically can't fail if you go, but the class makes me want to kill myself (figuratively). I wish I hadn't taken this class!!!!
I don't recommend taking this class, but I must say, it is definitely an easy A. The lectures are indeed extremely boring, and Dr. Maloney is really as good as they come when it comes to philosophy professors. Only thing is, the lectures are very dry at times, and as hard as I try to pay attention, it is honestly impossible at times.
Rarely any visual stimuli, if at all. It's mainly him talking for an hour and 15 minutes. You have to do all of the readings to make sense of what he's talking about. Summaries were easy. But an hour for an 800 word, grammatically sound essay that answers every single question is what killed me. Want philosophy? Shaun Nichols is your guy.
The lectures are so unclear, boring, and strange that it's almost like Maloney is not speaking English. Never spent so much time on the internet in one class. However, tests were pretty easy if you use the powerpoint slides. Didn't learn a single thing -- not one. Couldn't even name a course topic.
Boring class. The only reason of attending the class is for the extra credits. Don't need to listen to the professor, just read the slide carefully. Many quizzes and have 3 exams, two of them are in class. You should remember many things to complete the essay.
I really loved this class. I have to say I sometimes got bored but I have a short attention span. But if you do pay attention to the stranger part of the lectures it will make sense. I didn't do all the readings but they are helpful if you are with people in a group. If you are bad in philosophy you should find someone who knows it. Office hours.
Lectures are very long, very dry, and VERY confusing. Maloney talks in circles and it's almost impossible to understand anything he's trying to say. That said, you'll probably do fine if you read the slides only. It's an easy A but a very boring subject.
EASIEST CLASS EVER. Didn't pay attention to any of his lectures and still managed to get high A's on his tests. Attendance isn't necessary, but if you want extra credit point show up to class. Easy 160.
Maloney's class is a lot to take in. He's an energetic professor, is very knowledgeable on his subject but his lectures can be kind of confusing. Make sure to read the power points for clarity during class and participate with clickers because the extra credit defiantly helps at the end of the semester. Take D2l quizzes in groups too, its an easy A
This class is SO boring!!! I would not take it it! However, if you want an easy A, then take the class.
I got an A in this class without putting much effort in. Tests are two long essays, he tells you what to say! Lecture before exam he has a huge review sesh where he literally writes an essay for you. Clicker point are life saving, online quizzes aren't too bad after the first one
I don't understand how Maloney is rated so bad on here! He passionately teaches the material which is fairly interesting and gives extra credit for those who attend class! There are 10 online quizzes, 5 250-word lecture summaries, and 2 800-word essay exams (which aren't too bad because he hosts helpful review sessions for them). Good class overall
The course material was changed recently. This is the only course where being on drugs may actually help learn the material. The concepts are not terribly difficult to understand as long as you are teaching yourself, but be prepared to be graded on your understanding of his lectures.
Great teacher just show to class and you get extra credit for the clicker question
Such a boring class! I like Philosophy but the way he taught it put me to sleep every time. But he gives extra credit if you attend and answer clicker questions, which will add up and could change your grade significantly. Look at the slides before the quizzes and definitely study them before the in-class essays, it is a must if you want an A.
Maloney's grade on here is absurd. He's one of the most inspirational people I've met. Loves what he teaches and teaches it well. I would pinpoint people's confusion and boredom to their relation with the subject matter, as opposed to how well Maloney actually taught it. The subject matter can be very confusing and occasionally (rarely) boring.
LOL. Don't take his class.
The lectures are long and can be pretty boring. Attendance isn't mandatory and he offers extra credit clicker questions (which he usually gives you the answers) just for coming to class. The tests were about 800 word essays but we're much easier than expected. He emails back fast and is willing to help if you're stuck. Recommend for an easy gen ed
Professor Maloney is a great teacher. He is an extremely nice person and is passionate about philosophy. The lectures can be long and boring but it's definitely an easy A. He gives you extra credit just for coming to class by answering clicker questions. There are online lecture quizzes and the tests are essay format. Would take his class again.
Difficult class for those that want to do the bare minimum. Must attend classes to do well on the exams. I didn't use the textbook, but took well notes. Sit in the front and make friends to study with. Go to office hours and ask all questions! He is very nice. Study your notes. Exams are multiple choice, but also include an essay portion.
He clearly cares about his subject and is very passionate, however I only recommend this class if you are really interested in the subject. Half of the class sits there confused and majority of the lectures make absolutely no sense unless you are completely engaged and interested in the lecture.
Philosophy 160 was a difficult class. The criteria seems simple. They're 10 quizzes, 3 tests (including final exam), and 4 written homework assignments. The quizzes were hard, you can use open notes however its critical thinking so the answers are hard to interpret. Extra credit is offered, it will save you a letter grade just by attending class
Be ready to listen! Work load isn't too bad but I really stress studying and listening! He is very passionate which helps the class but I'd recommend this genEd if you want a good grade and have an interest in philosophy
He is obviously loves his subject and loves what he does for a living. However if you don't put effort into his class you won't pass. His lectures can be repetitive so I would suggestive recording lectures. The quizzes and exams are difficult but it's great that he does extra credit.
many ppl HATED this class. ive taken phil. for years and love the subject but agree he teaches it in a very confusing way. very redundant&roundabout. would not suggest taking this class if you do not know much about philosophy or just think it looks interesting. but if you love philosophy its not bad. u can use notes on quizzes but will still fail
loved this class! His lectures do get a little confusing, as he talks about the same subject for a while, but as long as you get the general idea you're good. gives you the essay question a week in advance(provides 2 possible essay questions, then shows) Final is only what you learned the 2nd half, and you also get the essay question for the final!
Although I did not enjoy all of the lectures, I think Professor Maloney is a great teacher. You get extra credit points for going to class, which makes class worth going to. The work is not too hard and after the first few writing assignments, there really isn't any homework. Prepare for the exams and you will do well.
He's super easy. There are only four 200 word summaries at the beginning of the semester and then a quiz every couple of weeks. There's two essay exams and then the final's online and multiple choice. He gives so much extra credit by clicker quizzes so that's why you should attend the class. Other than that, you don't have to pay attention in class
The TA's graded my written exams hard so it really depends on the TA's that semester. The summaries can bring your grade down. The extra credit if you get the majority of it will easily earn you a B or A in the class and is a difference maker so go to class. Beware that the 10 online quizzes are tough and you will need to study a lot for those.
LECTURES FOREVER!! Nothing makes sense in this class. Quizzes are pretty simple but somehow felt like I couldn't succeed. Dreaded going to this class but the extra credit is nice!
He goes off topic in all his lectures talking about random things. He tries to make his lecture more theatric and it makes it extremely difficult to understand. When you write lecture summaries don't be surprised if you get a 70% or lower. This class is designed for you to fail.
Prof Maloney runs on and on in lectures. The TA's grade really hard so make sure you cover all needed topics in the lecture summaries (go to office hours). Go to class because there is easy extra credit at the end of every class. The quizzes are difficult if you don't take good notes, most questions are promoted as "According to the lecture.."
Prof. Maloney is very knowledgable but often goes off topic and makes little sense during lecture. The class is lecture exclusive, so while attendance is not mandatory, it is advantageous to attend class. You get a lot of extra credit with in class clicker quizzes and Blue Book extra credit. There are 2 written exams and 8 online quizzes.
If you dont like philosophy, DONT take this class. I took it thinking it would be cool to talk about god, i was wrong. Maloney talks about nonsense the whole class. His TAs grade everything, i actually only understood the class when they taught it sometimes. Lots of extra credit tho so go to class. Not an easy a at all!! Not interesting!!
Prof. Maloney and this class really aren't that bad. The lectures can be a bit dry, but keep in mind this IS philosophy... The class is super easy if you just go to class and the test review sessions and do the clicker questions. No need to buy/read the book either. This class really is fine for fulfilling the gen ed requirement.
Honestly the lectures dont make sense and drag when Maloney teaches. His TAs are amazing and explain the lectures and study guides a lot better. They are extremely helpful. Dont even bother about buying the "required" textbook!!! I spent over $100 on it and we never had to use it!
This class was interesting for a couple weeks but soon got pretty boring. The summaries are graded pretty hard but the rest of the work isn't too bad. The extra credit will save you so make sure to not miss out on it. Maloney is very passionate and theatric in class which helps. If you want a good intro and you like philosophy, you'll be fine.
Maloney was a great teacher. Personally, I enjoy philosophy and he is one of the most respected teachers in the Philosophy department. I'll be taking another class with him because his knowledge is so extensive. I definitely recommend. Just do the work, show up to lectures, and you will pass. He is an easy grader, there is just a lot of work.
Do not take Phil 160 with Prof. Maloney. His lectures are long and very boring, gets off topic, and is extremely stubborn. He will never answer a question with a direct answer. Worst class I have ever taken. No exaggeration. Do not take this class.
The lectures are super boring, and I never understood them. This was not an easy class. I never understood what was going on and stressed so much about this class. I thought it was supposed to be easy. Quizzes are super hard, and most of them start with "According to the lecture..." and the options don't make sense. Notes are very hard to follow
A really great introduction to Philosophy! Prof. Maloney is a great lecturer and very intelligent. I never did the readings and I had no problems. He basically tells you the answers to the tests if you go to a review session and the quizzes are no issue if you show up to class. 10/10 professor!
He is so bad!!! Switch ASAP, he just would not stop talking I switch to another class which I'm super grateful.
The only reason I received an A in his class was from attending the non-mandatory lectures and answering all the extra credit clicker and blue book questions (gave me 11% extra credit). The quizzes & final are online non proctored but are still difficult. Attend his extra review sessions and pay attention to due dates for quizzes and reflections.
Majority of exams are essays, so if you like writing and you're good at it, you'll do well in this class. He's very passionate about what he teaches and is very thorough. He provides lots of extra credit opportunities and outside review sessions. The quizzes are easy points.
He is one of the worst professors I have ever had. He never gets to the point during lectures so your notes don't make any sense. The quizzes he assigns are completely different from his lectures. There are no quizlets for this course either... He seems like a nice person, but if this class is not required do not take it.
amazing if your a auditory learner. all information is on his slides however he often forgets about them and stays on one slide the entire lecture but he teaches great with the abscure style of teaching. offers lots of extra credit, and even sometimes slips the awner out. quizes and tests are difficult. skip class wont pass!!!!!
Initially I thought this class might be interesting. Maloney speaks in an emphatic ramble no matter what hes talking about, but he doesnt talk about much of anything. Listening to lectures doesnt help much but you have to go to get the extra credit points, which can make or break your grade. Relatively easy A but a pretty boring class.
Took this class because it sounded interesting, and it occasionally was. However, I stopped going to class two weeks in because I realized it was a waste of time. He rambles on about one topic for the whole class and never seems to get to the point. The grading Is incredibly hard for an intro class. Nice guy, tough grader, wouldn't recommend.
This was definitely one of the most interesting philosophy classes that I have taken! The class is extremely lecture heavy, but the professor goes into a lot of depth for each lecture slide. Make sure you pay close attention and take notes! I wouldn't suggest writing lectures down word for word, but pay attention to what is said in lecture.
If you go to each class and are are able to stay conscious then the pop quizzes will allow you to pass. Unfortunately i slept through all the quizzes and ended up with a 51 percent. I had recordrded all his lecture audio with no real purpose. I'm now a gardener at th University of Arizona.
I can tell Prof Maloney is my top3 fav professors in my four whole years in UA. He is AMAZING and wise and knows everything. He has his own philosophy and you will completely feel that he is A philosopher. However, I do feel it's quite hard to understand some concepts cuz it's quite ambiguous, especially you need to write down as an in-class essay.
