Although this was his first quarter teaching, he was actually pretty freakin' awesome. He took a hard class and made it more manageable. Attendance isn't necessary, but you should probably go because it's hard subject matter. The tests are pretty straightforward, no blind-sides, and you have enough time to finish each one. Overall he's really good.
Really nice guy, but not the teaching type. This material seemed below his level and thus hard for him to teach. Tests were pretty random and difficult at times; not necessarily what we talked about in class. He also couldn't always answer questions in class. A nice guy and a smart chemist, but I would not reccommend him for this level of teaching.
He is slightly awkward at times, and sometimes didn't understand what a stundent was asking. But he tries. I feel like his first test and final were almost elementary easy. BUT, that's if you go to class and work through the problems he gives in the book. I loved his class and look forward to trying to get him again in the future. I LOVED HIM!
Second quarter teaching, first quarter doing 121...you have to give the man props. It's not easy to jump in and get it right the first time. I think Markworth is a GREAT guy, and made chemistry really applicable for me. It was even better that I had him as a lab prof. I got such a kick out of him (in a good way). I would definitely recommend himmm!
well chemistry is hard a hard subject for most people, but he did a good job teaching it. did seem a little to 'smart' to be teaching this level, but great professor!
I enjoyed this class, Markworth was awesome. Especially cool to get him in lab too. But yeah, chem is hard and I may have been lost had I not take 101 and AP chem in high school..
Christopher delivers this incredibly dense subject to students on a silver platter! For a new teacher, he sure has figured it out fast. He is concise, clear,& fair. If you go to class and do the practice problems you will succeed. He enables students to get in a rhythm with the way he designs the class. O.chem is not so bad with him as the teacher
I enjoyed him. Chemistry sucks, but he is pretty fair when it comes to grading. Just go to class and you'll do fine. I was able to pull off an A easily in gen Chem and will try and take O-chem with him if I get the chance.
Really nice professor, prompt about answering emails. Tries really hard to answer questions but he doesn't always have the answers. As a lab professor he was very helpful, doesn't lecture much in the labs which was really nice and grades fairly on everything.
Markworth is soft spoken and has a laid back way of going through the material, which put me at ease, even though the subject is hard. He is good at answering questions and is never overwhelming in his pace. His tests are straight forward and usually easy to ace IF you study and practice. I plan to take him again.
He is a great guy and the best organic chemistry I came into contact with in my personal opinion. Requires a lot of studying but his tests are fair and he ensures you have the best opportunity to succeed. I recieved a 93 on the acs exam which is a reflection of his contribution to learning the material. Take this professor.
Best. OChem. Prof. Ever. Markworth is amazing, he is way easier than the other profs, his tests are not impossible, he is very clear about what you need to know, and genuinely likes his students to do well. He teaches clearly, concisely, and fairly. I adore him. Nothing but nice things to say about him. Study a good chunk, you will do well.
Dr. Markworth was very helpful during office hours and his lectures cover everything that you need to know for lab. The tests are completely straight forward and he grades fairly. The lab itself is pretty laid back compared to 354. I liked that the experiments were tailored more toward life science applications.
Markworth is the most helpful and reasonable (grading-wise) professor you will come across in the WWU Chemistry department. Plus, he's hot in a nerdy sort of way :p As long as you study for his exams, you are virtually guaranteed an A in the class and a phenomenal grade on the ACS exam.
Markworth is the man! hands down my favorite Ochem teacher at WWU. You can actually get an A in his exam if you put in enough work... unlike the other ochem teachers. very respectable man right here
I took Chem 352, 353, 354 & 356 with Markworth, he is really down to earth for a chemistry prof. I wish I would have taken 351 with him. He is a great teacher and hilarious in lab. Study and you will be rewarded. Plus, his quizzes are truly just the basics.
Great professor. He is easy to follow in lecture and always gives very clear and thorough answers to questions. His tests are very doable with the proper studying. He is usually available for extra help b4 tests if you need it too. Recommended!
very clear and concise in lecture and super easy to follow. laid back personality but also passionate at the same time. tests are very straightforward and nothing will surprise you. highly recommend taking markworth
Markworth is the man! He is a great lecturer who will hand you Ochem on a silver platter. He has a phd in organic chemistry so he really knows what is important. He makes himself really available out of the classroom. If you study, his tests are totally doable and straightforward. Amped to take him again in the fall for 353.
Took this class over the summer, and Markworth was a great fit for the accelerated pace. He is very straightforward, and his test were extremely fair given the fast pace of the course. We clapped for him when class was over. I'll happily take 353 with him in the fall.
I took accelerated 351 over summer and fall 353 with professor Markworth and was not disappointed both times. He presents the material adequately and is very good with handling questions. If you read each chapter and do practice problems you will succeed far more.
In my opinion one of the best ochem professors out there! Fair tests, clear teaching and lecture style, good pacing, VERY helpful in office hours! Take this class with him!
calm and clear in lecture... good at answering peoples questions despite how absurd some can get. tests are not that bad, averages range from 80-90 percent for quizzes/tests. overall a good experience, take markworth if you can.
Great teacher for visual learners.Best Chem 121 teacher! Tried it with St. John and there is a large difference between the two teachers. Very calm and helpful. Make sure to read all the chapters very well, print all the lectures. Work hard, he is an awesome grader. Take him if Chemistry may be a struggle for you; it's a fair class if you work hard
Markworth is a great teacher who gives fair 2 tests, 4 quizzes, 1 ochem ACS final exam, and about 8 online sapling homework assignments. Very good at answering questions in class and not intimidating in office hours. Doesn't go into any unnecessary detail to keep the material focused on what you need to know. Would definitely recommend.
Dr. Markworth made this class interesting and very straightforward. Very helpful during labs with a very relaxed lab environment. There are 2 fair tests with very helpful study guides and 1 max 3 page pharmaceutical research paper. Markworth is very knowledgeable in the areas that the labs cover so he is able to answer any questions thoughtfully.
Awesome lecturer, made a class I was dreading a lot easier than I would have ever expected. He does lots of examples and his test material is pretty much straight out of the lectures. We used Sapling a lot in this class but I found it was actually very helpful practice. Great teacher, if you can take a class from him, do it.
I really liked Markworth! He's a calm, composed guy who knows his stuff. He speaks slowly and clearly. Sometimes I got sleepy because his voice was so soothing, but that's his only downside. If you want a straight forward guy who gets the job done, Markworth is your man.
First time even taking chemistry and I was completely nervous it would go over my head, but Markworth really teaches his subject well. Answers questions succinctly and is frankly honest when he thinks you dont need to know certain facts or if he himself doesnt know the correct answer, total accountability. Do the study guides and you will do well.
I had never taken a Chem class before but needed this for my major. I am so happy I took it with Markworth because I'm pretty sure I would have failed otherwise. He goes around class during example prob's to make sure the students get it (90 person class). Very involved and cares about his students. Doesn't give extra credit, but gives study guides
Chris was a smart guy, but you could tell he was a little bored teaching the basic level chem class. But he's very honest about his grading and lets you know when you need to know something and when you don't for exams. His lectures can drag on a bit because his voice is monotone, but the content is understandable if you can stay awake. Nice guy.
Markworth is a fair grader and you know what he expects from you. He's lectures are clear and concise. If chemistry is not your major, this he will probably be your best bet at organic chemistry. If you are a chem major, he will make you fall in love with the subject.
Dr. Markworth is the best chem prof I've had so far. He's great in lecture, clear and concise. As a chem major, he is the best to learn from in my opinion. His exams are straight out of lectures but some could be tricky. As long as you put in the time, you'll pass the class easily. I absolutely loved him and will definitely take him again.
This guy has the best lectures. The class was super hard but he made it easier. He made the concepts super clear, but remember that the work out of class makes your grade. He is really nice, professional, and clear during office hours so make use of them.
Markworth is the best! He tells you what is important and what to focus on. His tests are tough, but definitely fair. If you put in the work doing the HW and the problems he posts, you will do good. He is the ideal professor that all profs should be modeled after, in my opinion.
Ochem is by nature a very hard class but Markworth really does do a good job of helping mitigated the difficulty. His test are fair and proportional to the material covered. Also He is good at explaining concepts in multiple ways so the everyone understands the material he really does care if his students succed
Markworth is the best! This was the second time I have had him and he always has a good sense of where the class is at. His quizzes and exams are tough, but always fare. He has excellent answers to any questions asked in class. I can't recommend Markworth enough!! Take him if you can!
His lectures were very informative and he did a great job of making sure we knew exactly what we would be tested on. Homework in Sapling was frustrating, but out of his control. Tests weren't easy, but we knew exactly what to study and his grading was quite fair. Partial credit was given on problems if you demonstrated that concepts were understood
Markworth is the very best!! I had him for 351, 352, 353, & 354. He knows Ochem inside and out. He always had an answer. His quizzes are basic check in's to make sure the class is understanding the material. His tests are very tough, but very fair based on his lectures. He prepared me well for the ACS. I can't recommend taking him enough!!
I had Markwoth as my lab instructor. He is very relaxed and friendly. He walks around and will give tips and pointers if you ask for them. He is very comfortable and knowledgeable in a lab setting. He is a fair grader on the lab reports as well. I would highly recommend you take him!
I didn't vibe well with Markworth's teaching style. He goes very quickly and never asks if there are questions. You basically have to interject his lecture to ask a question. Not good awareness of student comprehension. However, his exams are really fair, and he provides a lot of outside material to help with this difficulty of this class.
Markworth was a different kind of teacher. His classes were basically either all lecture or a test. He isn't a bad teacher, I just found it hard to learn from a powerpoint.
Dr. Markworth is a good professor. You should take him if you are taking the Ochem series. Ochem is a tough subject for obvious reasons but this is the best "no surprises" prof. What you study and go over will be on the exam. Nothing will be rewritten in a new way or an application problem you've never encountered. Take Markworth.
Very clear expectations, excellent examples.
He really knows the material well and is very good at explaining things. Exams are heavily based on lecture so there's no surprises. Seems like a nice guy, best of the three different ones I had for ochem.
Markworth is really great and he's my favorite professor I've had at western. He cares about your success as much as you do and is readily available for extra help if needed.
Probably one of my favorite professors at Western, this class is awesome if you are into pharmacology. Markworth has a ton of experience in the field. Really easy class if you go to the lectures and pay attention.
Professor Markworth is excellent. He understands that Ochem is a challenging course and so he takes his time explaining concepts and always provides multiple ways to think about something if someone isn't understanding. Grades based on online HW, 4 quizzes, 2 exams and a final. He makes chemistry not miserable! Thank you Prof!!
Gives really good examples in class that aren't in the slides, so go to class! They are super useful. Overall he explains things pretty well, he is aware that ochem is hard af and is upfront about it--offering tips on how to not fall behind. Also pretty flexible with extending hw if you get sick.
Absolutely phenomenal teacher. He presents things very well and gives great examples. He even came in on his own time to help the class study for the final. He is clear about what he expects and never puts anything on the test that wasn't on the slides or in lecture. Read the book and slides, do the homework and you will do totally fine. Great guy.
Markworth is a wonderful prof! He understands that ochem is tough, and takes the time to explain things different ways. He is great at answering student questions and his tests are very fair. He also offers take home quizzes, and the online homework give you 5 attempts (no credit off on missed attempts). He does a great job helping students succeed
Great guy. His lectures are amazing and he spends the time on questions to make sure everyone understands the material. He even holds a final review 'class' which is very helpful. He cares a lot about his student's understanding and does want his students to succeed. Classes are not mandatory but I would highly recommend not skipping.
Great professor. Lots of helpful examples and knows how to pace the class. Really kind and approachable, has fair tests, answers questions well. Reading the textbook definitely helps, since chem351 is a lot more conceptual.
Dr. Markworth is a great professor. He enjoys teaching and lectures well. He does problems on the chalkboard the entire time which was very helpful for taking notes /learning. He has a white board for office hrs also. There is a quiz before every test. 4 quizzes, 3 test, and smartworks homework. The quizzes helped me keep up with the material.
Prof. Markworth is a great guy, but his lecture style is so disorganized and confusing that I had trouble just trying to keep what he was saying straight. Moves really quickly through material too. I want to like his lectures but they honestly just make me wanna drop his classes.
I have taken about four classes with Dr. Markworth. He's extremely knowledgeable and makes his expectations VERY clear, so you should not feel surprised when you get to the exam. He gives good explanations in and outside of class, and he has good resources for the material outside of class as well. I will continue to take his classes.
Markworth was a fantastic professor! His lectures are a great mixture of textbook material and in-class problems. His exams rarely stray away from information he covered. Prepare for the ACS final way before the week before like I did, but he tries to organize study sessions with him and integrates old concepts near the end. Amazing professor.
Markworth is an amazing professor. He uses colored chalk which is super helpful to differentiate between things on the board, especially when it comes to orbitals. He's always willing to meet outside of class to help you and his explanations are super clear. The material covered is pretty difficult, but he does a really good job of explaining it.
Markworth was a very solid professor. He stumbled through some things in lectures, but all-in-all had a good understanding of where we were as students. Exams were exactly like quizzes and very fair so long as you paid attention, and homework was online and leniently graded. Don't recommend skipping and highly recommend the textbook.
Markworth is a great professor. The most important thing is that he is fair in how he tests you and everything that shows up in exams and quizzes is gone over thoroughly in lecture or in the homework.
Dr. Markworth will find the easiest an the best way to explain anything you don't get or understand during lectures. He's one of the best professors I've taken at WWU. The only thing I can say is don't hesitate to go to his office hours to get help because he's really helpful and will definitely make you succeed!!
Top professor, he knows how to teach fairly. Very upfront and direct with what he wants you to know.
What a lovely man. The best professor I've had throughout the OChem series. Very clear about expectations and is an excellent lecturer. An all-around gem.
What an absolute hero. I've had great professors in the chem dept, but Markworth is like no other. His lectures are well-organized and his expectations are crystal clear. The class is hard, but he is a great instructor and was willing to answer student questions almost every single day, offering multiple explanations to help us learn. Thank you!!!
Dr. Markworth really knows his stuff, and he is willing to help you succeed as long as you want it. He understands this is difficult content and does his best to teach it to you. I would highly suggest anyone take this professor, you will be more well-versed in orgo after taking a class with him. Clear expectations, reasonable, and fair exams.
Expectations for tests very clear. Does review problems at the start of class and breaks down Ochem to be easy. Great at reading the room and explaining more when people are confused. The best chemistry professor I have had and glad I took him.
Simply amazing. Professor Markworth had pre-made practice sheets that he created in the model of his exams for each chapter that really help the study process. Homework and exams had clear expectations and were very fair. Office hours were great to get a deeper understanding of the content if you wished. He really made me like organic chemistry!
One of the best profs I've ever had. He explained things super clearly and in a way that made a lot of sense, he also didn't expect us to have everything from chem 351 memorized at the start of the class. No surprises on the tests or final.
Mackworth is an excellent professor. Clear concise lectures. Helpful in office hours. Great diagrams. Ochem requires study, if you put in the time and effort, his high level of support rally bridges the gap. Straight forward quizzes and exams. If you do your homework, it will be cake.
Had Markworth for CHEM 351 and 353. He was great in both classes. Taught well and really tries to help when you ask. Would recommend Markworth
Dr. Markworth was an organized professor and made O Chem II doable. His lectures were clear and to the point, and I liked how many examples he did during class. He grades things pretty quickly and the tests were reasonable. I would definitely take O Chem with him if you can.
Markworth is a great professor. He is always available to help you outside of classes. I have him for 351 and 353 and I really enjoyed his classes.
Markworth is an excellent professor. Lectures are clear and concise and he takes time to clear up confusion and answer questions. Ochem is hard, but it was manageable. 3 quizzes, 2 exams + final, and weekly homework assignments make up much of the work. Put in lots of practice and visit office hours! Markworth knows his stuff and is there to help!
Great professor, would recommend him & plan on taking him again for 353. Show up to class, take notes, go to office hours & study ahead and you'll be totally fine, he made Ochem manageable. 2 exams, 3 quizzes. + homework (including problem sets), exam/quizzes are a good portion of your grade (per usual with upper level stem classes).
Structure of the class is fine with tests and assignments, but his style of lecturing is isolating and discourages collaboration with peers and engagement with the material during lecture. If you cannot learn by silently copying notes and can't process differing audio/visual information simultaneously, I would not recommend this professor.
While Markworth's style of teaching may work for others, as someone who cannot write and comprehend audio information at the same time, I struggled to keep up in lecture and learned very little during actual class time. Time spent with material outside of class will determine if you pass or fail, especially if you aren't a read/write learner.
I've taken Dr. Markworth 4 times now. He pulled me through Ochem lectures and labs. 351 with him was a necessity, 353 was hard and I think he struggled to know how to help me, but both labs were good. Take advantage of his office hours and do the problem sets he offers. His exams felt fair and he has a good sense of humor if he's comfortable.
He's super cool. Smart guy and amazing chalk board work. But is ruthless. If I didn't get 90%-100% on the cumulative final he wouldn't pass me and boom it happened lol. But he does give second chances just not me I guess. The class is hard but the material he lectured on made lots of sense he does move very very quickly but office hours is a thing!
If you are okay with faster paced lectures and are willing to learn how to draw molecular diagrams quickly, Markworth is amazing. Very clear & easily digestible lectures, walks through detailed examples of everything with real world/lab implications and context as needed. If you ask questions he easily finds a different way to explain it.
OChem will drain anyone's soul, but Markworth is very clearly passionate about the subject. Tests are hard and the in-class quizzes hurt for someone with ADHD, but again, OChem is hard. He might seem a little uninviting, as he has like... zero reaction to anything you say to him, but he genuinely wants to help anyone who needs it.
Im not sure why he has such great reviews, the curriculum changed for 351 but he refuses to change for 352. Testing us on subjects we were “supposed to” learn last term and refusing to explain it because we are supposed to know it. I went to office hours to get help and he treated me like I was an idiot and was generally rude. Made me cry :(
He's genuinely the best chemistry professor I've ever had. He is super straight forward, and is incredibly knowledgeable. He is very helpful and gives amazing explanations and examples. He is amazing at explaining things via email, he would even draw out examples in the email, and responds very quick. Quizzes are stressful
Ochem is a hard class no matter who you take, but Markworth is really a great choice. You have to go to lecture, they are very helpful and he explains well. He answers questions well and does good practice problems. He does 3 quizzes, 3 exams. All reasonably difficult. He is very organized and makes the slides, lecture and textbook are correlated
Markworth is an amazing professor and really makes ochem (a very difficult class) seem approachable and doable. He doesn't go easy on you, but he does equip you and communicates clearly what you need to do as a student to succeed. His grading is really fair and I love that he gives partial credit. Don't expect this to be an easy class, work hard.
Markworth is the best. Make sure you go to lecture and take good notes because stuff in there will show up on assignments and on the test. Good class fun lab.
Tests were administered by another teacher in the lecture hall. Lab attendance is mandatory. Grades are weird, with one assignment being graded throughout the quarter, so don't be too worried about your grade at the start of the quarter, as it will be very low. Read the example note entries for good reference for lab notes, which are graded.
O Chem is hard, but Dr. Markworth does his best to make it digestible and somehow feel like the large amount of content you're being thrown is not that bad. Great lectures and board work, 2 exams + final, and 3 quizzes, all of which were difficult. He's very helpful over email and in office hours. Do lots of practice problems and you will succeed.
His lectures are fantastic, I've never had a professor explain things so well. I had him for 351 and for 352 over the summer. The condensed 352 was rough, but he made it possible. Generous with partial credit on the exams - grades you based off what you know. Tests are hard but fair and the study material prepares you well. I got an A- in both.
Dr. Markworth is an amazing professor. His lectures are easy to follow. Even though he covers a lot of material each day, he breaks difficult concepts down into manageable pieces. He is super caring, and his office hours really helped me throughout the quarter. To do well on his tests, you must take good notes and follow a consistent study plan.
