Dr. Mills was an incredible and caring professor who demonstrated not only his understanding of the material, but also his interest in the well being of his students. I took Computer Theory with him in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic and he did his best with the transition to online learning and making sure we still understood the material
Dr. Mills was a great professor- very interesting guy, had great stories to share that related to the subject matter (software engineering), very understanding of situations that arose due to the Coronavirus (gave out extensions etc.). He was also a super lenient grader. The average for the midterm was a 100. Even though it was easy, I learned alot
Best professor I've had at FSU. Super responsive to emails and goes out of his way to be as helpful as possible. Genuinely wants you to learn. Doesn't make the class difficult for the sake of it and really puts in effort to help you understand. Has a ton of experience and firsthand background knowledge so material is not abstract but applicable.
C# programming online in the summer. He's super knowledgable on the subject and made this my favorite programming class. He posted tons of lectures and code-alongs with explanations that made it easy to learn even though it was online and was generous with grading. Email response time was great and always offered extensive explanations.
Professor Mills has handled the shift to online classes very well during COVID (I took C#). His assignments are clearly laid out (but still require critical thinking and creativity) and he is very responsive and understanding through email. Very fair grading as long as you work hard on the assignments, and has a real focus on actual industry work.
Dr. Mills is without a doubt one of the best professors I've had here at FSU. Given the whole pandemic at large, Dr. Mills has made the transition to online learning very forgiving for students. His lectures are very informative and helpful in doing the homework assignments and are applicable to real-world industry work. Very caring and responsive!
Took his C# class and could not be happier. Had office hours basically every day, was super responsive to emails and the work required was adequate. This class will be even better when we are back to in person but nevertheless I would strongly recommend it!
Without a doubt one of the best professors in the CS department. C# assignments are not overwhelmingly difficult but do still require lots of time and work. He's very generous with his grading. Accessible in office hours nearly every day and when emailing him outside of hours, he always responds within 12 hours. Very understanding and caring!
This is for the C# remote version of CIS4930. Chris is honestly a gem. He cares a lot for his students, and will help you out as much as he can. The class material was difficult, but I've learned a lot. I especially enjoyed creating a UI in UWP because I got to be a little creative with the coloring and theme.
I had to take this class remotely because of covid and it was asynchronous. Chris was always there to help students which was great since it was hard developing while just communicating through email. The course is one of those learn by doing classes, so you have to take the assignments seriously, but Chris is very understanding if you reach out.
Chris is honestly a great teacher. He genuinely understands what it means to be a student learning all of this material for the first time and adjusts accordingly. His assignments were tough, but he gave you so much help and was so willing to work with you to get them done that most of the class did excellently. Highly recommend!
Chris Mills is the best instructor I've had with CS courses. What a great guy and an even better teacher. He actually enjoys teaching and gives great feedback as well as hypes you up if you do a good job on something! I would take any courses you see with him because he is just the best.
Chris Mills is one of the only things keeping this department together, he's literally the best professor we have right now and I wish that he taught more classes. The class is a lot of essay eriting and other stuff that CS people tend to not like but he makes it easy and smooth to deal with. I've done like 3 classes with him and he's great in all.
I felt like I was always doing something and kinda struggling with this course but Dr. Mills was so helpful that it really helped! He's so sweet and willing to give out extensions if need be. He also grades really generously (there's like a 25% or something built in curve). All the other reviews are really what it's like in one of his classes
This class is super easy and chris is awesome. There's a lot of papers and the exams are all essay style so grading takes a long while but he's so generous that the averages are in the high 90s for everything. I wish he taught more classes in the major
Probably one of my favorite professors I've had at FSU. Definitely relateable and knows what he is talking about. He has a lot of real-world experience and makes this course almost impossible to fail (as long as you do your part). Grade is 3 exams (all take home/easy), 2 papers, scattered quizzes, and short hw assignments. He is very helpful.
This class is just the capstone for CS majors. With Dr. Mills there's nothing to worry about really. It's a super easy class if you don't do a project that's too hard or complex. They don't care about complexity so just choose and easy project and a good group and you're golden
He's a good professor. Grading takes a little bit of time, but it's understandable because he has a lot to do. His grading policy is also really nice because if you demonstrate that you tried, you still get credit even if it wasn't entirely successful.
It's a really easy class - 2 papers, 3 tests,an oral presentation and a handful of other assignments. The 5 test/essays are all extended response assignments so the class is a fair amount of writing. Beyond the writing assignments there's nothing to worry about for this class really. He also had 3 recitations total and class wasn't mandatory at all
The class had no meetings other than the first day attendance thing. Other than that it was just basically making a coding project with a group of your friends. Expectations were not too tremendously high for the project either. He also extended the due date of the project well past the original due date so that was really nice. Chill 1 credit hour
This class was difficult because it has you learning a lot on your own but Dr. Mills is a good resource to go to when you get stuck. I didn't go to lectures because they did not really help me complete assignments/understand stuff. They did have good info but searching on my own helped me more. The class is more application-based vs theory based.
The class is really straight forward but there are a lot of writing assignments. 3 writing tests, 2 essays, and some random writing assignments. Luckily they seemed to have graded pretty lightly for almost everything (the averages were all at least an 80) and Chris is just so nice and sweet. It's a boring class but he makes the material interesting
It's just the class that serves as a capstone project for the CS major. Pretty straightforward nothing too difficult (unless you leave stuff to the last minute)
Amazing professor. The class was difficult but he was very helpful during lectures and office hours. Would absolutely take his class again.
Hard class both conceptually and workwise, great concepts, great prof. Pretty much just your typical coding class, 5 programming assignments, occasional quizzes and other assignments
Easy class, lots of writing. Great prof, really nice. Class was a blur because of my numerous other hard classes but Mills made it so I was never worried about the class or thought about it much outside of test/essay days
Class is simple, just a group project with "increments" throughout the semester to make sure you're doing stuff. Pretty easy for senior CS students.
I think he is a really nice guy who wants to see his students succeed. I wish he taught more classes in the major. This class is pretty hard and you have to do extensive research outside of class to do assignments. I basically learned on my own but he was very understanding and provided a lot of support to students during the semester.
The other reviews here have pretty much covered it all. He was amazing at explaining stuff. Always wrote helpful feedback about why points were cut for things. He tries to help however he can. Even made the class flex after a bunch of people wanted him to.
Literally the easiest class I have ever taken. No class meetings, just do a project with a group. Super easy and to the point
Didn't really do much in the semester. Dr. Mills was good. The TAs were kind of mean while grading things. 94% is an A so it's a little tough if you have a harsher TA
Assignments are long and difficult but he grades pretty lightly and gives points for attempting things. Lectures aren't really helpful but going to office hours is pretty helpful.
Pretty good professor. Class is kind of hard but it's a weed out class. Mills is definitely your best option though. Lecture style doesn't work for me personally so I have to get a lot of help for stuff but there's a lot of opportunity to get help
He's much better than the other professor for this class. I have been learning a lot, I knew like nothing coming into the class and now I'm pretty good. Planning on taking the C# class with him too
The test was kind of hard but not terrible if you pay attention. He's way better than the other guy for this class for sure. The lectures are great to me I really learn a lot. Best professor ever, literally. Super understanding and caring. Really get the vibe he wants you to do well
I took this class last semester and I am so glad I did because he is great and my friends taking it with the other prof are suffering. Mills is a GOAT, you actively had to try to fail to do badly in the class because he just explains things so well that everything makes sense.
These reviews might make it look like he's an easy A and that's not really the case imo. He's a really good professor but you still do have to actually work for your grade. He gives you more than enough stuff to succeed though
Way better experience than the intro class in every way. Grading can be a little slow and hearing back after asking for help from him can take a bit depending on his other classes but the TAs normally reply quickly and he doesn't mind you double texting for help. Super nice guy
he is a great professor who truly cares about students, like he WILL help you if there are any doubts with any concepts and also teaches you how to do real life stuff, like stuff you would get paid at a job for
man literally replies to people asking for help at 3 am lol nothing more needs said, if he's an option take him
I have not been struggling whatsoever, the intro class was harder than this. Dr. Mills is a good prof who tries to help out whenever he can. assignments are straight forward, tests are pretty easy.
He is pretty good at teaching and cares a ton about his students. His tests were based on the material you learn in class and he is more than open to help you in his office hours!
I took the class last fall with him and it was an excellent class! It's not too difficult, he really just wants you to gain an understanding of AI and some of the ways it works without getting too far into math. There isn't even any required coding in the class. It's really just an overview of AI.
Definitely a tough class to pass in general. Dr. Mills tries to make it as easy as he can, but there are still some things that are just things you have to figure out yourself. I can't really follow along with the lecture style, it just does not work for me. He takes a bit to get back to people because he's always so busy. Overall it's good.
Im taking COP3330 with him this semester and hes an amazing professor. The class isn't easy by any means but Chris gives a lot of consideration for the students and offers a lot of his time to helping us with assignments. Hes very helpful at office hours and has a Discord where he answers questions asap. I cant recommend him enough.
Dr. Mills is a good prof, and its clear he really cares about his students. He's always available on his discord channel and does a good job answering questions. Some of the projects are huge tho, and if you didn't have a really good COP3014 class, you're going to struggle. You can muscle through, but its going to be a lot of work.
best comp sci professor at fsu, this was my third course with him, 20/10 would take again
this class is a lot harder than the reviews are making it seem. the projects are all huge. i worked on the projects from when they were first given to the end and still barely managed to finish. they were vague about what they wanted a lot of the time. he's available on discord but it never really mattered, they were just so long and hard.
He made this class a cinch. If you can take a class with him, do it!
good prof, cares a lot
Easiest and most useful class I've ever done
Super helpful and knowledgeable. Always available through his discord server. Cool guy overall
I had Ann Tyson for my intro class and I wasn't sure if programming was for me. Dr. Mills was great! He completely changed how I felt about it and made me so much more comfortable programming. He's always happy to answer questions and isn't mean to students for no reason
Professor Mills is one of the best professor's I've had the chance to learn from. He is always available outside of class and is very clear on answers to questions you might have. Assignments are a lot but if you work hard, you'll get through them. Probably the best computer science lecturer as well; very clear and concise explanations to examples.
Gave us an extension on a project we had literally all semester to work on. great guy
I never really bothered to attend lectures of watch videos of the lectures and still did fine. Most of what he wants done can be found on MSDOCs or something so it's not hard, just a lot of work to find what/how to do something. Lenient grading
People are grading him this highly because he is a really easy A but to be honest I didn't learn a whole lot in this class. The projects were huge and vague most of the time, but he's an easy A so it's alright. You don't have to put much effort in if you don't want to. I like him a lot but his teaching style is not for me
He's the man, definitely a shining star of our department. Take him for everything you can!
This is the 4th time I'm taking a class with Chris and he's an absolute delight in every single class. Funny, interesting, makes the coursework not horrible, really great guy all around
He's always so busy it feels like he doesn't have time for us. You can ask for help in the discord but depending on what you ask for help for it can take days or weeks to get back to you and it might not be the most helpful advice. He's real nice though so that's a huge positive. It was definitely one of the better classes at FSU CS though.
I'm in this class this summer and it's been a week and I can already tell it's great. He's so chill and tells you what you need to do straight off the bat. My friend took the other prof for this class in the spring and our experiences are night and day already. Defiantly take the class with him if you can
This class was super easy with Dr. Mills. We just had to write 3 speeches and say them in front of the class. He was a little nit picky about the speeches but tbh he grades lightly enough that it's fine. COVID hit the middle of the semester and he was great in the transition. If he ever teaches it again, definitely take it with him
He actually has industry experience so the class is a lot more interesting than with the people in the department who have just been professors their whole lives. I think he even works for a company in town rn. Class is interesting and I am learning a lot of new stuff. 10/10
I took this after the full return to campus in the spring and he still made the class online for us. It was super helpful because I had another class that ended 5 minutes before this one. The class itself is easy if you know anything about programming since it's just making another coding project
Class has been really slow so far but it's a summer session so it's fine. We have not really been doing too much but what we have been doing has been super interesting.
Very straightforward class, responsive in the discord (definitely get one if you didn't have one already to join the class discord), we've had one hw assignment so far and it was not hard. Some of the instructions are confusing so you have to ask him what he means but he responds quickly
The only thing I'm worried about is how high he makes the A grade be (it's at 94%) but the way this guy seems like, it's not an issue. He seems like he actually wants us to be able to learn material without worrying about the grades we get (he even said this in the syllabus lecture) so like it's all good. Take him if you can!!!!
He seems frazzled this semester and there's been a lot going on with him. Assignments are all pretty hard and take a decent amount of time to figure out. Super nice though
This class is a complete nonissue with Dr. Mills. He tells you everything you need to know and you just have to write some papers about pregiven topics (with sources given to you already)
Dr. Mills is an amazing lecturer and his assignments are extremely well laid-out in terms of the expectations they have of you. He's also exceedingly easy and quick to respond outside of class, and will often go above and beyond to help you if you reach out to him.
Honestly might be an unpopular opinion but I did not like him. There were a lot of plans made (teaching and assignment wise) that just never came to fruition. I feel like I learned almost nothing. we were supposed to do a lot but most plans were abandoned very quickly. HW was abandoned 2 assignments in, canvas never had submission links, etc.
Felt like I did not learn a whole lot. He was always busy doing other things and a lot of questions were just answered by other students. I signed up for this course to be taught C#, not to be essentially told to go read documentation and figure it out myself. Also, heavy focus on basically everything but actually learning C#. Do not recommend him
The GOAT
I took his class over the summer and I learned so much about full stack development with C#, in such a short amount of time. The way he cares about his students is something that is rarely found in the CS department at FSU... Take every class that you can with him. He is truly a gem.
Dr. Mills is a great prof to take for this class. He is easier than Bob Myers, but Myers goes more in-depth and you will leave the class with more knowledge. I took both profs and failed Myers but easily passed Mills. You still have to work for a decent grade, though. He is empathetic, helpful, and easy to reach via Discord. I highly recommend him.
Definitely recommend him over bob myers for this class. Bob called me stupid in his office hours and Chris was so patient with explaining things. When I took the class with Bob I thought CS wasn't for me, turns out it was a professor problem, not a CS problem.
The best CS professor I ever had
One of the best CS professors at FSU, probably the best. He wants you to actually learn and pass the class. He explains very well and give us the material that we need to be successful in this class. Do not think twice to take classes with him, your life will be easier. I wish all the CS professors were like him. He is great!!
Wanted to take this professor to see what the rage is about. Definitely worth the hype. A professor that truly cares about his students and highly invested in their success. He's awesome
He's a legend around our CS department for good reason. Super helpful in office hours and has engaging lectures that help you understand the material really well. I like the class a lot
I love how chill and nice he is. Even though covid's not been a thing for a minute, he still makes this class basically asynch. It's so nice. The class itself is nothing to worry about LOL. You just gotta do a fullstack program and make a video about it and you have all semester to do it. Super easy
Solid prof, knows his stuff and can communicate it well. Fun and interesting assignments that build off each other and aren't too hard to do.
He will not answer any messages you send him. The assignments are so long that you have no time to finish before the next one comes around and his graders are very difficult.
The difficulty of the class doesn't come from the class itself it comes from who you are grouped with and how intensive the project you choose is. Overall the class was fine and Mills was easy to get in touch with via the class discord server that was required to join. Great professor, but very long to get feedback and grades.
Prof. Mills is a great guy, and is involved with his students on discord, but has so many students among many classes its rare to get a quick reply or answer to a question. His assignments are hard for the amount of time and brain power one person has while just beginning to learn how to implement the concepts in the class. However, test are easy.
Takes sooooo long to get grades back with any homework assignments. We waited the whole second increment to get grades for the first increment. Luckily he's nice so we got 100s but we submitted the second one not knowing if we were doing increments correctly. Also super annoying that you basically have to sign up for discord to talk to him at all.
I took this class last summer and it was great. I took Java with Bob this semester and it's been so awful, I daydream about this class. I wish Dr. Mills did more stuff in the university, he automatically makes classes better
Homeworks were difficult but professor Mills was always supportive. Even when he was swamped with work he still offered to help students that were completely lost. The class was overwhelming at first but that's pretty typical of any programming course. Take Mills if you can, you will learn a lot.
Super cool professor and is always down to help his students. Favorite professor i've had at FSU
The programming assignments were hard ngl but what I love most about Dr. Mills is that he literally is always available for help. You can DM him at like 3 am and there's a 50/50 chance he'll respond. Saved me a few times in the semseter. Wish his TAs were that nice though, they were kinda mean and harsh
This professor is so nice. He really makes it obvious that he does this for students instead of just phoning it in like some CS professors here do. His projects are so long to do though, that's the biggest problem with him. They're very vague and confusing too
His TAs are really mean and nitpick miniscule things that he says are fine to do during class. All his assignments are so long and hard that it gets really tough to finish one before the next one arrives. He is pretty nice but it doesn't really translate to helpfulness, to pass this class I had to go get tutoring every other day
Very useful class. I learned more about DB than in my DB course. He also teaches us about APIs, which I didn't even know were a thing before this class. Tbh I wish I waited to take this class because apparently theres a course code that has the class and I wasted a cis on it but it's all good cuz this class helped me pass an interview I had
this class was so eazy and fun. i liked that we actually did hard stuff instead of boring "rewrite this library function" type work
this whole class is just doing a group prject with 4 other people and submitting it at the end of the semester
I liked the class a lot and felt like I learned a lot of information too.
such an easy class lol, just show up and you will do fine
it's just making a group project with a couple of friends, not hard at all
The main thing about this class is that you will have to implement a bunch of things that are in the standard library of C++ but you have to pretend that you don't know what the standard library is. The projects are frankly too long and ambiguous.
This man is smart. He really knows his stuff. It's amazing to learn from him. His lectures are heavy, yet straightforward. His assignments are reasonable and he was very graceful with deadlines this semester. God bless him.
I liked the class, it was pretty fun and straightforward. Mills is also a really nice professor.
Dr. MIlls was really nice and I appreciate everything he tried to do but this semester was just messy in general. Things haven't been graded and the semester ended already. It was also very difficult and most people haven't beenable to do the assignments. I always felt anxious and overwhelmed in this class wich is not how the comments portray it.
I would not take him again because of the disorganization of the class. He was super nice, like literally so impossibly nice and there were no late assignment points taken off but like the class was so senseless in what we did, it was a mess. I got an A so it was OK in the end, but frankly the way we got there was not worth it tbh
Chris Mills is a great professor (one of the best). However, it seems like he has just had too much food on his plate lately. Outside of teaching, he is very professionally active and that often detracts from the quality of his courses. Don't expect feedback and speedy grading, but his lectures are great. His Discord server is a great resource.
It's essentially a singular group project that determines your grade. You'll also learn a lot about GitHub if you're not comfortable with it already. Stuff like Git issues, branches, merges, pull request, and git terminals / git IDEs. Your skill level with GitHub will increase drastically if you are a contributing member of your group project.
Great person as well as a great professor. The material in this class ramps up very quickly, but the professor understands that and is honest from the beginning and grades with consideration.
Class attendance was just taken on the first day and that was it. Really easy if you don't try to reinvent the wheel with a huge project. Get a good group (or at least one that will try to do stuff) and you're golden
The class was wild this semester and really hard but Chris took care of us and made sure no one failed if they were trying throughout the semester. The projects were really hard though and I almost didn't finish the last one.
He is extremely busy but he will make sure you end up in a good place grade wise at the end of the semester. Sometimes he really struggles with balancing the difficulty of the class but he always adjusts the grading scale to accomodate.
Holds students to a high standard, but still forgiving for life situations. Professional and intelligent.
Mills is the best professor that you will ever have. His assignments are hard sometimes but he will do whatever he can, and more, to help you. He is not only excellent explaining the class topics, he also is a very nice person and very empathetic professor. I'm sure many people stay in CS because of him.
Probably the best professor in the CS department. Understanding and patient. Knows his stuff.
This man will be blessed. His main concern was making sure we understood the material and we're actually learning. Obviously COP3330 material is pretty difficult but he helped us to understand it well. His assignments were easy if you pay attention to the example code he does in class. He's a good man savannah, a GOOD man.
Compared to other FSU comp sci teachers, he is a GOD. This man has restored my faith in professors. He truly is a respectable and fantastic person. Takes forever to grade but it doesn't matter in the long run because he teaches so well. Other comp sci professors should be ashamed of themselves but not him. I hope he has a long and fruitful life.
He makes codes in class and explains them in detail. And he records all of those classes through Zoom and uploads them to the canvas, so it's good to catch up with the class through video even if you miss it or can't catch up. His explanation is very detailed and clear, easy to understand, and he is very kind and humorous.
He works so hard to teach his students and you can tell he really cares. I'm honestly amazed at how much time and effort he puts in. I felt like I had to work hard and get a good grade in his class, because if I didn't it would be 100% my fault. I would take a class on watching paint dry if he was teaching it. The CS department is lucky to have him
My favorite professor by far. He was accommodating to students and would push back deadlines for everyone if a few students could not reach it. Clear explanations in what was taught and was very fair in terms of grading. Only issue was grading took some time, but this was not a huge issue to me.
He always posts recordings of his lectures online in case you missed something during them. Understanding everything in them will almost guarantee you a good grade. He is also probably the most well-respected professor I have had by far.
Mills was a great professor I just did not love his way of teaching. I eventually started to get it but did a bit poorly on the first exam. Definitely go to class in person even though it is not required. His homework assignments are a bit confusing but he cares and will help you whenever your need it.
This project helped me land an internship. The .NET stack is used in industry so make sure to pay attention and you'll get a lot out of this class. It is a lot of work though. Mills is really understanding so you can ask him any questions you have.
Dr. Mills is a great professor. He cares about his students and is incredibly knowledgable, even if his lectures are somewhat dry at times. COP4870 is entirely what you make of it, it's not too hard of a class but its not too easy. Don't fall behind on the project and try to keep up with lectures and you will get an A and learn a lot.
Mills is a great teacher and a super nice guy. He gives plenty of extra credit, programming assignments have vague specs but they are graded super easily, and the tests are incredibly easy (the median on the final was like a 97). You lose participation points if you miss over 8 classes, but that's only when he takes attendance, which is very rare.
Best CS Professor I have ever had. He goes over the concepts first in a powerpoint, and tries to make sure everyone understands the topics while also keeping it relatively brief. Then he usually writes code examples in class, thoroughly explaining everything as he writes it, and posts these on canvas for review. Great guy personally too.
Dr. Mills is an amazing professor! I highly recommend going to his office hours as he is always more than happy to answer any questions and help you with anything. The class grade is composed of 3 exams and several programming assignments. I found the material challenging, but with lots of time and practice, I learned a lot in this course.
Excellent professor and easily one of my favorites at FSU so far. Very likable attitude and personality. I loved the way he explained things, and he always walked us through comprehensive example programs during lectures. Always seemed eager to answer questions. HW assignments were hit-or-miss and varied in difficulty, but overall they were fun.
note wo ee
Overall a great professor. Very caring and respectable. Only downside is he tends to delay publishing assignments and isn't very clear on grading criteria. Be wary that this class requires a lot of time outside of class to work on the semester-long project.
Take this professor! You will learn, and the tests are easy if you attend the lectures. I recommend him!
Easily the best CS prof at FSU, if you have the chance to get into his section make sure you do.
Amazing professor and very manageable class. Perfect if you want to learn a lot. Very possible to earn a high grade if you do your work. Highly recommend.
One of the best professors on campus who genuinely cares about his students. He's always willing to answer questions and makes learning C++ easy for everyone, regardless of prior experience. He truly wants all students to succeed in his course.
Very easy to get a good grade if you come to class and do the work. Makes OOP like a piece of cake.
Great Professor. He provided sample exams which made studying for them incredibly simple. The material is complicated, but he makes it clear which parts of the course he will test on instead of providing a confusing long list of things to study for.
Hes nice and very chill about deadlines. I think he doesn't structure his notes the best. if you are an auditory learner you'll do fine.
Had him for two different courses, honestly, one of the best professors I've had.
This is truly one of the best professors I've ever had. You can tell he really cares about getting his students to understand the material and he was very kind and understanding. The class was structured in a way that made what was expected to do well in the course was easy to understand and follow.
