I took this on telecourse, which worked out very well for me. Prof Nichol provides review lectures and an extensive packet of type-written notes to help with whatever will be on the midterm and final. I would definitely recommend this professer.
telecourse. Strange guy, not very helpful. Study and know all handouts and text material. Make sure you understand how to do any lab projects, he is not clear. This class should be taken in person, I like science and feel jipped
I took him for Biological science and lab and he is cute and smart. He mostly used his notes so you don't used the book that much. His tests are a direct reflection of his notes and reviews. If you do the work, You will pass the class and learn alot. I recommend him as a professor!!
Horrible teacher. Wouldn't ever recommend someone to talk his class online. Very unhelpful.
If it is in his mid term and final exam hand out notes, it will be on the tests! Don't miss his reviews and his handout notes for this telecourse and you will do very well. He could not be more clear or direct on what he will test you on. Show up and listen and finish the term with a great grade.
i've never taken a class this hard.especially since it's only one credit!have to withdrawl.very unhelpful!never take him!!!!
I was extremely disappointed by Professor Nichol. I find his labS to be extraordinarily challenging. His information was unclear, poorly organized and not executed well. He was unfriendly and not helpful. When the class was lost (on discussion boards) he did not interject. Due dates conflicted and he would lock us out. I will NEVER take him again!
I took his online class and was extremely disappointed. Probably the most unhelpful teacher Ive ever had.
I took it online over the summer, course moves VERY quickly with a LOT of work due every week for a 1 credit class. You post results on the message boards, but other than that - there is no communication or help and you're pretty much on your own. I had to withdrawl and will take a different teacher next semester.
First online course I ever had. I only saw him twice. He seemed very dissorganized and not together. The class had projects for him, but he was so unclear about when they were due that half the class didn't turn them in on the due date. I emailed him with questions and when/if he emailed back he was very unclear!! DON'T TAKE HIM!!!
I took the summer e-course so it was WAYYYY TOOOO much work to take on in such a short time. He is not clear at all on what he wants and doesn't respond promptly or sufficiently to any of your questions. If at all possible finde another teacher for this course.
Took his online summer class, and although it was SO easy, he was probably, like someone else said, the most unhelpful teacher ever. Doesnt seem like he cares at all about teaching.
I feel like I wasted money. He is very unclear and never responds to emails or phone calls. He requires you to buy so much stuff in addition to the book and the lab kit and you have to send him a ton of faxes. I was very disappointed with him and I didn't learn a thing. Stay away from this teacher--he is a joke for a teacher!
His class was really easy to me. I mean he gave u two chances on each test and alot of time to get your work completed
He is a great teacher. Very interesting and funny.
I had Prof. Nichols for online Biology Lab this past semester. Online lab is great for those of us who aren't going into med.field- no rats to disect!! Overall, two labs a week, doing at home. Quizzes online, harder than most online quizzes!! He was very good at getting back to me w/responses to my questions. I would recommend him!
Took biology online.Assignments were very clear and managable. The class turned out to be more interesting than I expected. He offered interesting, urgent and controvercial topics for classroom discussion.Lab assignments-clean interactive computer programs-the way of the future-that made them simple and easy to understand.
I think he was very good. I do like science, but i took him for envrironmental science, online, and i thought it was easy, the films are pretty boring, but he is cool. I had got a very bad grade on a test, and he let me retake it, and i got 100! I learned a lot. I would take him. PLus, he is very easy
I took Mr. Nichol's Marine Biology class on campus and it was awesome! We went on loads of field trips and hands-on labs . He is a goofball but he knows his stuff! Assignments took some effort but were not hard. LOVED the class!
I took this class online. This class is VERY time consuming and is neither easy or hard. Expect to put alot of effort in to this class. Angel doesnt keep an accuate grade either so ask the teacher or do the math yourself. My grade droped 10 points 2 days before finals, because he changed the percentages of each catagory at the last min.
I took the lab online. It was time consuming. DONT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MIN. Oh, and keep up with your own grade. Dont bother following what Angel has. It will change when he finalizes your grade.
I thought this class was hard, but science is not my thing. I took this online in the summer, the assignments were clear and i would recommend working ahead. You get a second chance to take the unit exams. Overall it was ok and i would take this prof. again.
Took the online Intro to Environmental Science course and would take it again if I had to take another science class. I made a B and wouldv'e done better if I had taken the time to actually do the work instead of just skimming through it. I recommend taking this class if you need to fill a physical science requirement.
Took this class online & it was really easy! Got an A. If you do the work, watch the videos & use study guides, you should get an A. You need to do some reading but the study guides Mr. Nichol provides for the mid-term & final are EXACTLY what is on each test. Print those & fill them out & then do your test. Do each assignment, they're easy.
I took this class for earth science and i loved it. ive never been one to really like science but prof. nichol is totally amazing. his class is nothing but power point presentations, and although boring... all tests are online and he doesnt care about using notes and blah blah. hes such a science dork but its so funny and erntertaining.
I took Mr nichol twice, once for earth science and once for marine science. He is one of the most interesting teachers at his campus. You go on tons of field trips!. as long as you do readings and print out your study guides you are sure to get an A. His tests are all online. You do have to keep up with your own grade though.
Professor Nichol is a good teacher but the class online was a lot of work/reading. You will be assigned a whole unit(3 chapters) to be completed every two weeks. Make sure you study the powerpoint! That is where some Unit test questions come from! You get two attempts at the quizzes, so you should get 100's on each.
Good teacher. Homework is comprehensive but fair. You really do actually learn and retain info from this class. He returns grades in a timely manner as well.
Easy Class. Most of the work is from his notes. I took it online during the summer and learned a lot. Do the final review before you do the final it really helps. There are 2 ch's wkly with an assignment, discussion, and (easy)quiz for each ch. Then 2 videos. with ways to get extra credit. Easy online.
The professor does not care about the subject he is teaching, the answers are taken right out of the book but dont let this fool you, he never tells you what he expects and never critiques. You think you are doing a decent job but then get an F.DO NOT USE THIS PROFESSOR if you want to get an A,or if you care about the subject matter.
I took him once for Marine Bio and another for Oceanography. Tests come directly from review sheets and it's pretty much a waste of time to go to class, he just goes over power points that are available online. The class is not very difficult, it's kind of a waste of time, though.
He's a pretty good guy. I would rather watch paint dry than learn about Earth Science, but he made it tolerable. I wasn't doing cartwheels during the lectures, but I could follow along without dying. Plus the field trips were pretty fun, and I got a great grade. I like him.
I took Earth Sciences online and found Prof Nichol to be helpful and encouraging. I learned and retained more than I have in many other classes. I got an A and would take another science class with this teacher.
Teacher was so helpful! He really responded in time and did a wonderful job. I am really grateful for all he puts into teaching his students. I took online and it was awsome.
I took this class online. Professor was great. Final was harder than expected. Assignments and tests are easy. Score high enough and the final won't matter but it is required. I failed the final but still managed a B in the class. Highly recommend.
I took this class over summer online. We had 1 or 2 quizzes each week along with 1 test. Not too hard if you read the chapters. We also had a discussion post and an assignment of about 15 questions & the answers are in the book. I had a 94% in the class but the exam was harder than I expected so I ended up with 84% after the exam.
One of the best teachers I've had at SPC. Very encouraging and responds quickly to e-mails. I enjoyed the class because his lesson plans really help you to retain the information.
Love the subject, but this instructor made me hate the whole process of learning it. SOOO much work w/ no consideration. Wants to be address in proper manner, but do not address his student the same way. Questions are seemed, set, to fail you. His 1 Xtra credit requires tremendous time...Rediculous!!! His NOT in my recommendation list @ all.
Final Exam is proctored so if you take online classes to avoid driving, steer clear of this one.
I wouldn't say that he is awful however, like the comment above said he wants to be addressed a certain way..Well do the same. I am to the point where I don't even want to do the work! I have to though...Just depends on the type of person you are. If you are Bill Nye the Science guy..You are good!
DO NOT TAKE EARTH SCIENCE ONLINE CLASS WITH THIS TEACHER. There is a lot of work, the earth science book is hard to read and the exams don't even seem to be out of the book. If you like earth science this teacher will make you hate it. I am a A student, however in this class I have a C and it will keep dropping. WORST CLASS EVER. I REPEAT DON'T TAK
I have him right now for Earth Science and also Earth Science Lab, He has a good personality but it takes him almost a month to have all the tests and labs graded. Make sure you check your grades because he marks things that are wrong, which are really right. He seems really unorganized and if you ask him a question, he makes you feel like your dum
I'm taking his online Enviro. Science class. Unless you want a huge work load and questions on the test that seem to come out of nowhere, don't take this class. I do exceptionally well in science classes but I can't seem to do well in his class. It'd be easier if the test questions were from our assignment or our reading, but they're not.
he was such a boring professor! i wanted to fall asleep duringe very lecture! his at home tests were hard and his in class tests were tricky. however, he graded VERY easy on the final paper.
Interesting teacher, but gives a lot of homework work which takes a lot of time. Test are long and tricky, so you will have to study.
Incredible field trips. We went kayaking, otter trawling, to Honeymoon island. Not easy, but what a science class shouLd bE. Learned stuff I'll use for real life. Prof loves his stuff.
This class was a challenge, but not nearly as bad as some are making it seem. The assignments themselves were pretty easy and spaced out bi-weekly. The tests were a little tricky. Final is HARD! (122 questions proctored) He drops the lowest regular test and assignment scores so that helps your grade. Got an A. I would take him again!
05/22/11. For week 1, 1 discussion post w/ 2 responses, 1 assignment (20 multiple choice questions, 11 fill-in the blanks, & 1 pg after you read the EPA website about global warming), 1 quiz (10 questions) 1 unit exam (20+ questions). You have to read the ENTIRE chapter and understood it THOROUGHLY and COMPLETELY. Avoid this class if you can.
I don't know how good of an instructor but don't ever take this class online. Unless you have a really good bio foundation to work off of, you'll be lucky to pass the class. He'll make you pay dearly for taking the class online.
Not a good instructor, didnt give clear directions to meet in labs and put things on test that werent covered in class
Prof. Nichols is a geology geek and it shows in his assignments. I took his class online and it was challenging, but I got an A. Key to a decent grade: use the test reviews as a study guide when completing the Units. The final was a piece of cake because he basically gives you the answers on the review. Took me less than a 1/2 hour to finish.
Wow! took online summer and amount of work was crazy. I made an A and I'm a 4.0 student at SPC. Hardest course to date with this teacher! He made me feel stupid if I asked a question. Key to getting good grade is using publishers online book for older edition. His questions are similar....hint. I now hate earth science thanks to this teacher
Horrible teacher,Do not take this class. Profesor has a tendency to treat his students like children and will scold you for approaching him after class even if you have an important question. Horrible person and a horrible teacher!
Made class very interesting. Lectures based on powerpoints that are uploaded onto angel. Lowest test & assignment grade dropped & multiple extra credit opportunities available. Good teacher.
He was a great teacher. He is funny and is very interesting. He teaches many different classes and teaches very well. I would take him again for any class.
Intro to environmental sustainability. Really, intro! get out if you can do not take this class!!! expect to put in about 5 hours a night read 2 chptrs a week do discussion and reply plus assinment GET OUT NOW!!!!
Online: well organized and laid out; easy to follow & understand; clear expectations; pertient assignments; quick email response; heavy reading; loads of extra credit
Horrible, not helpful at all and when he does help you, he makes you more confused. Made you fell like something else was more important or he just doens't like to teach online classes. I have never seen such a confusing grading scale either. Get another professor before you waste your time
Teerible professor, not helpful, tricky exams. Rarely will give you 100% of the grade, there is always something wrong. I took EVS AND BSC 1005 and was the worst nightmare ever. Please, do not take classes with him.
I'm on the brink of graduating and I have never complained about a professor until now. He's horrible. I have no idea why he teaches. Please, please choose another professor!
Professor Nichol comes across as stern, but the assignments are pertinent, and although there is quite a bit of writing in this course, it is "do-able" if one follows the schedule. This is one of the most useful and best classes I have taken in my college life. The information presented is quite eye opening, and Nichol offers a suburb presentation
Overall this professor was good. He is a nice person and you go on a lot of fun field trips. He also really cares about his students. My only issue is his lectures aren't very precise. A lot of the stuff on the exams I don't remember him covering in class and didn't see on the powerpoint. He gives a lot of extra credit which helped me.
Professor Nichol is an overall nice guy. His class is extremely boring though. I received a B in his class and always studied an hour before the test. Would only take unless you're really interested the subject.
Very fast pace; all assignments were to be completed several weeks before the end of class. I work at this pace when I can, but when it is mandatory and covers 24 chapters, it may be difficult for most people. He did try to make Earth Science relatable, and discussions used online resources. Take with a light course load.
This class had way too much required work, this professor is very rude to his students and hands out assignments with absolutely no instructions. The final was also too detailed and the reviews did not follow the exams content.
This Professor is not only rude to his students, but he expects too much work to be done, does not use the information during reviews on the final, does not use a textbook, gives out in class activities without any instruction and is overall sloppy in his in class lectures.
Great teacher! really passionate about the topic. You HAVE to study his notes and pay attention in class or you'll fail. Lab was alot of fun went down to fort desoto a few times. Over all this class is not a breeze you have to work for your grade.
Prof. Nichol is not as bad as many say he is. Read the text, do the assignments and you will be fine. Note: answer the multiple choice questions on the midterm/final as per the data in the course notes. If you answer them according to reputable outside sources like I did, you'll get them wrong and end up with a B for the course.
The content of this class was difficult for me, however Prof Nichols was always encouraging and would provide feedback and help whenever needed. Good communicator. Recommended.
Had him for Oceanography. He'd clearly rather be fishing, but he's smart, funny, and gives A LOT of opportunities for extra credit. Go to the review sessions for the tests, he goes over the review sheet and it helps a lot. He drops the lowest score from tests, in-class activities, and homework assignments. Cool dude, take him if he's available.
I took him online. Unit exam every 2 weeks, unit assignment every 2 weeks, 1 paper, midterm, and final. He gives you a review for both so study in advance and both exams are proctored. Takes a long time to grade each assignment but he is a good grader. Read the book and you should do fine. Got a B in the class because I never studied for the exams.
If you attend all of Prof. Nichol's lectures and lab trips you will have a blast while learning more than you ever thought you would. He picks on students only out of love, and during field trips he gives so many helpful studying tips. We went kayaking as our last trip. Most rewarding class I've had at SPC. Studied a lot but enjoyed content. 94.6%
I loved this class. Lots and lots of assignments, but there are two weeks for each unit. He offers lots of extra credit. The tests are HARD, and there is so much reading it is difficult to know all the info for the tests. You must watch videos and write three essays for each unit, and activity assignments. I learned SO much.
If you are an A student an have a 4.0 . I would not take this professor. He is not clear and does not help. His test are tricky and awkward. I feel like he wants you to fail. I would not recommenced this teacher.
Professor Nichol was awful. I made it through with a B by the end but I really wish I had chosen a different professor from the start. He doesn't help, he just gives out labs and basically says figure it out yourself in groups and then goes back to scrolling his facebook page on his phone... What a joke. Reading a power point isn't teaching FYI.
This was a great class. I dont know why so many people put bad comments. This class was really fun and pretty easy. All you have to do is attend the class and field trips, and pay attention. This was an amazing class!
Structure of this class was really straight forward.. Exams are super hard and I didn't find study guides useful at all but all weekly assignments were very straight forward. Only complaint is he doesn't use the online calendar so you really have to be on top of when you assignments are due as no reminders show.
Professor Nichols was a great professor. I took his Earth Science Lab. At the beginning of class he would speak, and pass out the assignment. You did the assignment in class and handed it in. One project and 3 tests. All very doable. On a personal level, he was funny, and charismatic, and I would take any science class he offered!
I was failing this class and asked him for extra help. He helped me and gave me extra credit, but I put in the extra hours. Go to his posted lectures for extra points. This is a great class to take at the college. Really not good to take online. Went from an F to a B. And he has a good sense of humor. You wont be bored.
Very enjoyable person. At first hesitant because he didn't appear to be very involved but it's only as much as the students choose to be. Very easy guidelines for class and very interesting subject matter. Doesn't take himself too seriously.
This course was not as interesting as I had anticipated. The course should be titled "all about evolution". Heavy on tests. Review sheets do not prepare you for the questions asked on tests. Proctored exams with no notes allowed. Spend most of your time studying the essay questions for the tests. Prepare to teach yourself the material.
Tough in some regards, lenient in others. Had BSC1930 O/L. Course is 4 units. Each has a test plus a series of assignments. Two proctored exams (mid + full final). His test/exam multi-choice and T/F questions can be tough; his essay questions aren't. Provides reviews. One large project--work hard on it and the unit assignments and likely see As.
Not sure he is real! Never interacted with class, EVER! Might as well have taken a class with a computer only. ZERO feedback on everything. Proctered midterm/final with many essays. final covers whole class, since you don't know if what you've turned in is what he waqs looking for you could take final and get everything wrong. Take with other PROF
Professor Nichol is absolutely amazing! His lectures are very interesting and he is really funny. Every Thursday was a lab trip/in-class lab. We even went kayaking for one of our trips! His class is easy but requires a deal of memorization. There is not a lot of homework but a couple of projects. I highly recommend taking him! 10/10.
Professor Nichol, where do I begin. Is he a real person? Very rude not friendly at all, absolutely a F professor. His assignments and power points are miserable and drone on and on and on, and have lead me away from Biology. I do not recommend Professor Nichol.
Horrible Professor. Does not help students with anything at all. Lack of respect to students. lectures are useless and power points. awful
Great class and Prof. Not an over abundance of work, yet enough to know all material needed. Several Projects. Midterms and finals have mass essays on them. But if you know your material its fairly easy. Loved the class
Five Modules One test and home work/lab per two weeks One paper due about 10 pages after the midterm For online he was okay. Wasn't able to take advantage of the extra credit but there was a lot offered. Midterm was fairly easy, Final was hard. He offers an accurate study guide for both including the essays on each.
Professor Nichol is a great instructor for any science courses. He gives good lectures and gives extra credit throughout the entire semester. He made Marine Biology more enjoyable because he has the class goes on field trips and enjoy the outdoors and nature. There are 5 practical exams, midterm and final. Overall, if you study, you'll pass.
As an online professor, not so much. Study guides for exams were less than useful. Here is the book, here are the tests, have a nice day. He then gives links to Ted Talks for lectures and wants essays where there is a definite theological (or lack of) bent to what he wants you to write on. Sucked the joy of learning Biology right out of it for me.
Professor Nichol is an awesome choice for taking Marine Biology. Funny at times, but also gets serious at times. Doesn't overload the course. Has the class goes on field trips and be outdoors. Some are Seaside Seabird Sanctuary, Honeymoon Island, Fort De Soto, and Clearwater Marine Aquarium. There is a midterm and final. Overall, great class! :)
Great teacher. Lots of new experience in his Marine Class. He always got the class laughing, but didn't let us goof off too much. New bay pines center is a plus. Sometimes pictures on quizzes are not easy to understand so make sure you know your material.
Terrible teacher online, doesn't offer any guidance, the reviews have very little to do with the quizzes, and no study guides. The quizzes contain typos and incorrect or confusing answers, they are designed to trick you. Lots of work with no help from the professor, and when you do email for help he responds rather rudely.
Dr. Nichol is a solid educator, but he is INCREDIBLY SASSY. He has an attitude about his syllabus, but otherwise he gave me a good foundation for oceanography.
Most quirky and funny professor I've ever had. He can be sarcastic and sometimes people take it the wrong way, but he never means anything by it. He does great midterm and final exam reviews, and pretty much gives you all the questions ahead of time to study for. The weekly field trips are fun and I felt like I took a lot away from them.
Good teacher! Yes, he can be super sassy, but he gives relevant assignments that are thoughtful & thought provoking. He can be a bit of a tough grader, but long as you do your work you'll be fine. I read a review about how he keeps theological aspects out of his classes & that is accurate. Probably b/c he's teaching science courses, not religion...
take his class you wont regret it, he gives a lot of extra credit opportunity
He's an easy going professor, but be ready to work to show you actually want to pass. He likes to joke around in the assignments, which does relieve tension at times. Overall, I would take him again if I had too.
Great professor, great online class, the information was presented clearly and well organized.
Easy online class. Gives plenty of time between units. Lots of textbook reading. Offers TED Talks too. He gives lots of extra credit. There is a project paper which is 10% of overall grade. Final is 25% of overall grade. Drops lowest homework and quiz grade.
Great professor if you're thinking of taking an online class. Makes course material fairly easy, all you have to do is just follow the calendar he gives you and you'll do perfectly fine. He makes the class schedule to where it's easy with pretty much any schedule, 2 weeks for each unit. He also drops 1 low grade in each category which helps a lot!
This class is pretty easy if you show up. You have a lot of field trips. The exam and mid term are half in class and half at home but he gives you the answers to the exam before hand. make sure you keep up the date with your notebook too.
BSC1930 is an easy option to fulfill a second science requirement. Homework, quizzes (open-book), discussion posts and activities are 20% each. Lowest dropped! Midterm and final are worth 10% each. Reviews are similar to exams. Alternative projects are available instead of exams. Extra credit is offered but if you do the work you shouldn't need it.
Absolutely ridiculous. Taken online. The platform and curriculum should be easy because the assignments are fairly simple, however, he's extremely rude. The directions to assignments are poorly written. Awful feedback, leaving you with more questions. Then when you email with questions, expect rude/snide comments back. Avoid this dude.
If you're looking for a way to suck the fun out of learning, this class / professor combination is your golden ticket. Rather than learning fascinating information (some birds fly over 21,000 miles per year) you're required to memorize latin names to classify organisms that develop their anus before their mouth because that's useful for life.
Very strict about assignments, not understanding at all with extenuating circumstances when it came to assignment deadlines
1 project, 1 discussion, 1 reading assignment + questions, and 1 quiz due every 2 weeks, but are time consuming. Midterm and Final are proctored but no unit tests, study guides help some but filled with other things you don't need. wants an essay for discussion posts, but doesn't actually give a word count. sucks the fun out of a cool subject.
Love this guy. Funny, relatable, real passion + experience in Oceanography. Amazing lectures, goes above and beyond to answer questions. P much goes over entire chapter in his lectures, read chapters beforehand to get the most out of class. Great syllabus, great layout on myCourses, great course layout, v cohesive. 10/10 will take next semester
I went into this class excited to learn about oceanography and I left feeling defeated. The lectures are boring and at times end up going off-topic and the midterm and final are absolutely ridiculous . There were 3 essays on both exams. All of my grades in this call were A's but because of not doing well on the exams, my grade ended up being low.
Earth science 1000 / proctored honor lock Midterm and final exams are the quizzes no more to be said. take pics and "study"
My only issues were how long it takes for him to reply to an email and grade assignments. It's weird that I'm turning in week 5's work and week 4's work has not even been graded yet for example. He's strict about turning in late assignments so at least have the assignments graded on time for us to review the feedback.
Very fun class and a great professor. If you actually ask questions and participate he will notice and help you. Class is mostly outside doing nature walks so its very fun.
Great professor who really is passionate about the material. I never had a problem with communication and you can tell this guy loves what he does.
Really nice and easy-going guy. Field class which was fun, but involves a LOT of driving to different locations around the county. It will cost you a LOT for gas and parking. Many interesting trips. Workload consists of weekly field reports. attendance is mandatory, allowed drop one trip (lowest grade) but you have to show up for everything else.
Fun field class with lots of trips, but requires attendance and gas money. Professor is helpful if you engage. Used Unstuck study and the free textbook to prepare - made study a breeze.
Christopher Nichol is a really great professor. His work is easy, simple, and clear. He has a midterm and final, however, they are are easy and open notes. No Essays Has virtual field trips, but all on youtube. No need to go out. Discussions Power point (1), or creating handouts/brochures. Answers to emails, and very understanding. I enjoyed it!
Professor Nichol is Awesome. His work is easy, mainly virtual field trips questions (All on his youtube), quizzes, discussion, and homework like making a handout, or brochure, super easy and creative things, no pressure though. Unproctured and open notes on midterm and final.
