He truly is a very good professor. Okay, so maybe towards the end he was a little late grading papers but he had a legit excuse and he apologized! I learned so much in his class, you get lots of practice signing, but of course, you have to practice outside of class also. Can't wait for ASL 2 next semester since he'll be instructing it! :)
Good teacher would definitely recommend his class.
Chris orta (co) is a great teacher. He helped me with sign language. Yes he may come across hard sometimes but he enjoys teaching. He is a funny person and if you don't know him you may take it as him being harsh when he really just joking. I learned from him. I would highly recommend hIm. You will learn a lot. He has a lot of patience too.
He was my instructor for ASL 1 & 2. I was despondent when his ASL 3 did not make. He's a phenomenal professor, and I suggest his class to anyone interested in ASL. It's palpable learning a language takes years of endeavor and dedication, but what I learned from him in two semesters will be with me for the rest of my life. Thank you Professor Orta.
Go to class, pay attention, do you work, turn everything on time, take the tests, and you WILL pass. Is that simple! If you find yourself not understanding something, just ask him, he'll help you!
Put on effort in class and you will be fine.
Great class! If you want to learn ASL, this is the class for you!
DO your work, in and out of class, ask questions, still don't understand, ask more question!! Know what you want and listen to what he wants; and you will be fine!
Awesome professor, super helpful. Show up, don't talk, use ASL only. Put your phone away. Always ask questions. Be respectful.
I really enjoyed learning ASL. Mr. Orta is deaf so you truly learn and understand the importance of sign and culture. You must come to class and pay attention. He has a lot of unique teaching methods that not only assist you in learning, but makes learning fun. I recommend anyone wanting to learn ASL take his class.
Professor Orta is an excellent teacher! He is patient and takes his time to make sure each student understands the signs he is having us learn. He wants everybody to participate and learn and have fun while doing it! Great class that I would recommend to anyone who wants to learn the basics of ASL.
He's tough but he works with you extremely well to get the hang of ASL. It's my favorite language to learn and because of him I wanted to learn more!
He was a great teacher! Very helpful and easy to learn from.
I took him for ASL 1, he was awesome! The class requested him to teach ASL 2 the following semester, again, he was awesome!! He was scheduled to teach ASL 3 but sadly the class didn't have enough students and it was cancelled. :( I highly recommend him and I hope he teaches ASL 3 soon, I would take his class again!! :)
Mr. Orta was amazing, he was so helpful in class. He is pretty adamant about his rules but as long as you respect the rules and him, it will be a fun class. You will not be able to talk in class whatsoever but that is just a sign of respect also. He is a very sweet man and I completely recommend him
Prof. Orta is an amazing ASL teacher, he has a passion to teach others his native language!
Professor Orta has a gift and a passion for teaching. He does whatever it takes to help you understand, and he is a very open and understanding person. His people skills are top-notch, as is his teaching. I have massive respect for him, and there are many people in our class and outside our class who feel the same. The best professor I ever had.
if you had a push over teacher for ASl 1 you wont like him in the beginning of ASL 2. I didnt. But he really is great. He is funny and he likes to play around with you if you give him the chance. There are a lot of assignments BUT they're very beneficial and i am a better signer for it. Definitely taking him for ASL 3 if he is there
Prof Orta is an amazing teacher. He is excited to share his language and expects you to be excited as well. Total class participation keeps you from ever being bored. He gives 100% and expects 100% in return. He is helpful and encouraging. He inquires with students and asks for input to make the class and students more successful in learning ASL.
Professor Orta is unlike an other professor I have ever encounter. The class is amazing and fun I have yet to have a boring class from day one I have had a blast. The deaf events that the students are allowed to go to really help you as a signer I will be taking his class next semester. Not to mention he is amazing to look at.
You have to go to class, if you don't then the next day you will most likely be lost. He is a funny guy, a trickster, but when it comes to teaching he makes it in a fun way to learn. Time will go by so fast with him as your teacher. Also DON'T talk just use ASL. It's easier to learn if you participate.
Super easy. He is sweet, funny, and understanding. Not to mention easy on the eyes. He really cares about his students & the subject. He wants to see everyone succeed. He also gives passes, and extra credit. But you have to show up to class. I also took 8 week courses so it may different for longer classes.
Professor Orta is an amazing instructor. I cannot say enough good about him and his class. Learned alot; Miss signing!
Professor Orta really cares about his students and the subject. He requires you to do a lot of outside of class things like go to deaf events but they're a lot fun. I loved him, and have taken three classes by him. I would definitely recommend him!
Professor Orta is great at what he does, and the best thing about him is that he cares about his students. He treats everyone in his class equally and really wants everything he does to benifit you. He grades fair and does not ask for much. He teaches straight out of the book. So if you're interested in sign language, I say Professor Orta is GREAT!
Professor Orta is awesome! He is a great teacher! After completing his class, I feel like I learened A LOT from him; not only about signing and deaf culture, but about myself as well. You must do the homework in the assigned workbook, but he lectures straight from the workbook. He truly cares for his students success, I definitley recommend him!
Mr. Orta is truly a great teacher. Of course nothing is handed to us in this world so you must work to get a good grade but it's a piece of cake if you pay attention and do all your assignments on time! I'd definitely recommend him to anyone who would want to take an asl class!!!
I'll keep it short: He's a topnotch teacher. He loves what he does and is always trying to improve himself. We had a small class and I really enjoyed it because we were able to go beyond just the book. You have to practice or you'll be lost. If you email him, he is usually quick to respond. He's so passionate about it all.
He is a great teacher I would take him again just to take it grades quickly very clear and helpful and very funny
i went into this class not knowing anything about ASL. i came out of this class knowing everything. Chris Orta is one of the best teachers I've ever had. he really cares for his students and he helps us out a whole lot. not to mention he's a cutie haha. :)
you will love him. You want to be a part of the deaf community and aid in communication? he wants to get you there at your full potential. he really cares for his students and we have grown to care for him too. you wont regret him. he follows the book, tests arent too hard, tardies and absences matter. dont take the class if u wont put in the work
Professor Orta is a very giving and helpful teacher. Is he a tough grader and strict, yes but he does this because he cares for his students and wants you to understand his language. I gave 3 for the easiness because the course is difficult being in a different language but if you apply yourself you will do fine. I would suggest this course to all!
Professor Orta is very helpful. Even though he expects a lot from his students, he is willing to spend extra time on a subject if the students don't understand. He is very specific about what he expects in his assignments and he makes learning this beautiful language easier than it actually is.
Best teacher ever. You can tell he really cares about his students. Be prepared to come to class every time. I would highly recommend.
Very awesome teacher. If you put in the work, he'll help you out. Very intelligent and knows what he's talking about. Not a hard course as long as you do the homework and pay attention. Don't skip classes! He's super fun and makes learning a new language enjoyable.
He's a great teacher. I didn't have the ASL foundation I needed for this class but I stuck with it. He helped me improve so much and is very patient with his students and wants them to success.
You can't go into this class without having a solid foundation from ASL 1&2. If you do, you'll be completely lost and struggle immensely. Fortunately, I had a foundation and I found the class to be enjoyable, yet still challenging. I feel like my skills improved. I've never had a professor so willing to help their students and so easy to reach.
I took his class this past summer semester, I will try to keep it short and sweet. If you really want to learn while finding a new appreciation for the deaf community.... take his class. As tough as it was to take his class i have learned so much and come very far, i can honestly say that he forces you to learn but it makes all the difference.
Best professor
Professor Orta is great! I went into ASL 1 not knowing a single thing in sign language and 4 months later(took asl 1 & 2 fast track) I can converse in sign. It's awesome. I'm taking ASL 3 in the spring semester and for sure with Professor Orta! I recommend any student wanting to learn sign language, to take Professor Orta.
Professor Orta is awesome! I took ASL 1 & 2 fast track and I learned a lot. I will be tacking him again for ASL 3 next semester!
He has a great teaching style It forces you to learn ASL
Study, pay attention, show up for class. It's that simple. You will learn a lot in this class and be better for it.
Professor Orta is VERY strict! He pushes you to be the best at what you are doing. Attendance is a must! All assignments must be turned in and there are plenty of opportunities for extra credit to boost your grade. This class was 8 weeks and it was hard! but I did learn a lot.
the 2nd half of this class was crazy hard! Professor did the best he could with the new material and the time we had. less than 8 weeks. For ASL2 this was hard! Professor Orta expects a lot from you so if you are not mentally prepared this is not the class for you. Attendance, Participation, and dedication is a MUST! AWESOME instructor!
Professor Orta is a tough teacher, but he is so passionate about the success of his students. Don't take his class if you want an easy A. However, if you truly want to learn this language and develop real life ASL skills, then he is the best teacher you can take. There is a lot of homework, but each assignment matches the material you are learning
Very willing to help. If I had a question I knew I could ask and get a good answer. Interactive in class. Strict but fun and not out to give you a bad grade. He does want his students to pass and gain from the class.
IM supurise with all the good reviews he has. I can agree he is a very strict teacher show up late more then 3 times u will get an absent. He is a very tough grader. Make sure you understand his assignments because if you do not he will not let u redo it. He is indeed very passionate about his language. But hey thats his culture & life.
You can tell he has a great passion for teaching, is willing to improve to help his students. Although his test are hard if you ask for clarification he will be more than glad to help. His teaching style forces you to learn it is not an easy A but if you really want to learn I suggest you take his class.
He is good person and very creative and fun, but is waaaaaay to strict and unflexible. Yes you learn, but you will not sleep. To much homework. To perfectionist.
He is very knowledgable and does a great job at keeping you interested in the class. There is not an interpreter for the class, but he is very good at making the signs clear, and is open to repeating himself until you understand. Participation is mandatory. The syllabus is the law. He is very strict, and has high expectations. The class is worth it
This is the best Professor if you are looking to learn the language. He is pretty strict on expectations regarding attendance, due dates and so forth but it's the best for the student. You actually learn the material and lectures are NEVER boring cause of the many learning activities. Moderate amount of Homework and great class overall.
Super strict, very hard class, but you will leave learning a lot.
Overall good professor. Don't expect this to be an easy class. You have to work hard and be serious about learning ASL. It was a very hard class pays attention to detail so make sure you do everything correct. Don't miss too many classes or you will fall behind attendance matters if you want to pass the class.
Very strict expects you to be in class and do all of the homework. He only does this to benefit you and if you do the everything you're supposed to then you will learn the language and pass the class.
I took ASL I and II as 8 week classes and ASL III the next semester. Professor Orta is an Absolutely Amazing professor. He does expect a lot of you, and you will need to work hard but after the class is finished you will be glad he was your professor because you will have learned a lot! You do have homework, its helpful just do it!Super Recommend!
This is NOT a blow-off class. You better be serious about ASL if you're going to take a class from this professor. Wow, he is a strict professor, but fair. If you want to seriously increase your signing skills, this is the professor for you. Orta rocks!
If you're looking for an easy A, this is not the professor for you... HOWEVER, if you're looking to actually learn a foreign language (a beautiful domesticated one at that), then this is your man! He may be strict & the material can be tough, but that's what makes learning from him inevitable! If you're truly dedicated, I promise you he's worth it!
If you want to sign well, Orta is for you! His classes are not easy and he will push you to your breaking point. However, you will thank him later. There is method to his madness. If you are serious about sign language, he is for you!
Professor Orta goes by the book, He is great professor! Take the class seriously, he doesn't play nice all the time and is quick to take off points if you voice in class, forget your book or earnplugs. This was my first ASL experience. EVER. I loved it. The 8 week course is tough and you must pay attention or you will feel lost .
His method of teaching created an environment that brought the learner to new level of excellence. If you actually want to learn the language, follow his instructions. He is one of the hardest and best Professors I have encountered.
No speaking allowed in class, but its for your own good. He's strict and follows the syllabus EXACTLY. He's helpful and extremely encouraging. He loves to see his students succeed. He offers TONS of extra credit more than anyone else you will ever have. I took his ASL 1 and 2 8wk course class and can gladly say i will take him for 3 and 4 as well.
Chris is honestly such an amazing teacher, he cares about his culture and wants you to put yourself as into it as you can, and honestly its what you have to do to learn but its for the best. You can't slack, definitely have to earn your grade but its worth it! and you get to meet tons of new and friendly people! but all in all, Chris is AWESOME!
He is a great teacher! He enjoys watching his students succeed, and always opened for questions and concerns during class and after class. Always wants his student to communicate with him. I've enjoyed both his SNGL 1401 and 1402. Started his class not knowing a single thing to now able to communicate with ASL fluently!
Chris Orta is, hands down, one of the best professors to learn ASL from. He is so passionate about the language, his students, and really wants everyone to learn. Chris gives great feedback on how to better yourself and you can tell he really loves what he does. If you want to learn ASL, you have to take this class!
I took his class simply because I wanted to learn ASL, and honestly feel like I have learned a lot. He is very understanding, has a clear grading criteria, gives out extra credit, and truly cares about his students. However, this is a tough class, and If you dont pay attention or do the coursework, you will not pass.
First time taking an ASL class and It was my favorite class! It is a lot of work and requires time, but it is worth it. If you really want to learn ASL he is your teacher! He does have his rules you have to follow but it's all for your benefit. There will be no interpreter but it is not as hard as you think it would be. Practice practice practice!
Professor Orta is a really passionate teacher looking to better his students in every way possible. The homework comes straight out of the workbook that is given. Mild amount of reading for this class. If you work very hard, study, and communicate with him, you should succeed.
Connects well with students. Do. Not. Skip. Your. Homework.
Christopher Orta is very passionate about the language of ASL and the Deaf Culture. In this class, you will have to pull your weight. There is a lot of homework for this class, but it can easily be finished through the textbook. He does offer a good amount of extra credit. He is serious about his teachings, but he does have a great sense of humor.
Awesome inspirational teacher who wants to see you improve in your skills as well as in life :)
Good teacher ,don'r expect an easy class though. If someone comes up talk with him and the two of you will work something out. If you take advantage of him, you will have a very bad experience in his class. He knows, and don't put up with childplay
Sometimes difficult when teaching a newer class. He adjusts each semester to make the class better. Amazing professor, very open to questions and wants you to learn, as well as have fun with it.
Make sure you do your work ! Awesome teacher ! Do your work and show up to class and you will be fine!
I took his class for asl2. It was an 8 week class and is very hard. If you want to learn take this Class but if you haven't taken sign language in a long time I do not recommend trying. His class is for people serious about deaf culture. He is very helpful if you communicate with him. Overall it is a great class and a great way to learn.
Mr Orta is a tough teacher, but he is fair. He has very high expectations of his students, and he should. There is a lot of work required outside the classroom, so be prepared for that, but the outside work is helpful, not busywork. If you want to be a skilled interpreter this instructor will make you earn it, and it is worth it.
He is a very tough teacher and gives a lot of homework but you learn so much and he wants you to be the best interpreter/signer
He is a strict professor and very blunt but his knowledge in this course helps out a lot. I would take him again because I did improve in my signing skills with all the hard work.
Amazing professor. He's super strict & a tough grader but always with good intentions. His goal is to create great interpreters. You're required to do 12hrs of volunteer service be prepared to make time for that. His receptive exams are hard even after studying all night. You will learn SO MUCH from him! He's truly outstanding & caring
Professor Orta is an amazing teacher! He lectures, he uses Power Points, and we play educational games. He is one of my favorite teachers. You MUST attend class or you will fail. He has a little sign in sheet so DO NOT forget to sign in.
Outstanding Professor!! Kind of strict, but is patient, fair, sticks to the syllabus, & gives great feedback on how to improve. We played games everyday which helped ALOT. Test are straight from the book, follow the instructions and you'll do great. He also offers plenty of extra credit, grades in a timely manner & is very helpful. Would recommend !
He is not an easy teacher, and he gives a lot of work but if you do the work and do your part, you can do well. If you don't know something you have to let him know so he can help you and he will help you if you ask. He's very passionate about what he does and has a heart of gold but that doendoes mean he's an easy teacher. Good luck!
This teacher is very tough, but so fair. This was one of the hardest things I have done, but I can honestly say that by the end of his class I felt that I really learned the language, built some confidence. This was the best decision ever. He is the most available teacher to his students I have ever seen before. Be prepared to work, and improve.
I have taken professor Orta for all my ASL classes and going on to ASL 4/2302. This class is tough and he is strict, but it is only to better yourself in your skills. There is much work to be done, and you must put your part, you must study and read, but everything is for your benefit. If you want to learn, take him. Don't be scared he's awesome.
Orta is a great teacher, really cares that you learn what you need to but he's strict and he goes by the rules, lots of video tests but if I had not taken him for this class I don't think I would be ready for ASL 3.
If you actually pay attention, practice signing, and do your homework then you will pass easily. Especially if you actually like ASL and deaf culture. You need to wear earbuds everyday (for a grade), points off if late, and points off if you talk inside of the classroom. He's really funny, caring, and doesn't want any of his student to fail. Great.
He's an actual angel. His classes are harder than you might expect, but it's only because he wants you to succeed. He's approachable and fun to talk to. Also, he is deaf. That surprised me when I came into class my first day. But he'll do everything he can to communicate with you and help you succeed.
Great Teacher sets the Bar High! Great Teacher You will learn in his class so if you want to pass his class follow and study the book. all his class lessons are taught from the book he incorporates games in the classroom in order for students to learn signs/remember them . He is a strict teacher and requires all his student to be on time to class.
I feel in love with the ASL after taking SGNL 1401 with Orta and continued with him up to ASL 4, finishing with Structure of ASL. What they say is true, he is probably one of the toughest professors you will take but it is ALL beneficial. His class prepares you for each level and the pureness of his ASL teaching doesn't go unrecognized. Worth it.
He's really strict and has a lot of expectations, but it's ALL has purpose. I've never seen a professor this passionate before. His teaching is clear and he wants you to succeed, but you have to work hard for it and don't fall behind. He answers emails really fast and class is always enjoyable. Lots of homework, but it helps you learn.
Professor Orta is an exceptional professor. He is dedicated and wants you to learn. This is not an easy class if you never taken ASL in the past. I mean, if your goal is to actually learn the language then this class is for you.
Complete angel of a man. He's strict because he cares and wants to respect everyone's learning environment. You have to pay attention, and he makes you work for your grade... but he's a genuine and caring person who will make sure you have every resource you need.
Professor Orta is THE guy for ASL. I mean, it's simple. You've read the other reviews; go on, scroll up and down. Look at what you see. He teaches a whole new generation of ASL students. His students are a new breed - his strictness and wit and everything else about him inspires skill. His students (ASL 1-4) outshine others from different teachers.
Before anything, read your syllabus before going to class!! The thing that got to me the most was that there is a dress code (!!) for this class. Understandably so at some points but then it's biased here and there - it's not always fair. That aside, Orta is a caring and sweet teacher!! Good teacher but there are some funny points here and there.
He is an amazing professor if you want to become an good interpreter take this class. He will prepare you and challenge you for your journey. He is a excellent professor.
Hes a really good teacher. Hes a little strict but thats because he really wants you to learn the language right. Otherwise, hes good, helpful, and fun.
There's no going around it, a language class with typically be difficult not matter what. I've learned that this proffesor encouraged and required us to surround ourselves in the community(love it),because it was VITAL to learning the lanagauge. Lectures are great,Study the book, ask questions, he is very accessible and is passionate of his class.
Professor Orta is a great teacher! He grades quickly and is very kind. If you do take his class, you cannot be lazy with it! If you do not pay attention, show up late, or not do assignments, you will fail his class. Other than that, i would totally recommend him! He is the best teacher i have ever had!
He is one of the best professors I have taken. Every class matters, so it's a big deal that you do not skip. As long as you participate in class and do your work, its a fairly simple intro class. If you work, I suggest requesting a few Thursday nights off to do some of the events.
Professor Ortas classes are tough but if you practice and do the homework you will pass. The homework itself is time consuming but you will learn. He is an amazing professor who really loves what he does and is always willing to help you out.
Professor Orta was a great professor. He wasn't much of a tough grader as he was holding you at a high expectation. The homework and work you do it tedious and can be a lot at times but it honestly helps. If you're not sure about ASL being the right choice for you, you will know for sure after taking him. Will be taking him again.
Would definitely take him again if he offered classes I need to continue my interpreting position! He gives great receptive practice
Professor Orta is hands down the best professor that I have ever had. His passion for teaching shows when he teaches the students. He is strict, but for good reason. He wants you to embrace and be part of the Deaf community, not just learn about it. There is a lot of work involved but it is very rewarding at the end.
Professor Orta is the best teacher I have ever had, and I have a prior degree from Lone Star College. He is tough, and strict when it comes to attendance, deadlines, and dress code, but he cares about his students and will ensure you learn and do well if you apply yourself. He is engaging and made me want to be the best student I could be.
Professor Orta, is phenomenal at what he does! If you want to learn ASL, I would highly recommend you take his class(s). At first, it might come across as a difficult class, but if you're dedicated and engaged you should have no problem. If you do find yourself in some trouble he is always willing to help, and always offers extra credit.
He's the best professor I've ever had! He's always rooting for you and always ready to help. He loves making class fun as well by having little games and competitions. Be prepared to learn A LOT of vocabulary!
Orta is probably the sweetest prof I've had. I took him for ASL 1, & I'm in his ASL 2 class right now. If you don't go to class, you will get dropped(Seriously. if you miss 3 classes, he'll be outside the class with a drop paper for you) Don't let that scare you! You NEED the textbooks, you use Signing Naturally in class, & there's 5 FHPO quizzes
You WILL use your text books for this class. You are required to attend classes, and you WILL have homework. Be ready to work, be ready to study! Hes a tough teacher, but he will set you up for success. Hes by far the best teacher Ive ever had, and the most supportive teacher as well. Good luck.
Professor Orta is the best professor; if you are looking to truly learn ASL and have a better understanding of Deaf culture he is the professor for you! I walked into his class without any prior knowledge and left with a love for the language and culture. He truly cares about his students, very organized, clear with expectations, always helpful!
Professor Orta is one of the best professors Ive ever had!! He is strict but very caring, and is always available to help. You must go to class everyday and study the book, especially if you havent taken ASL before, but the classes are very interactive and fun, you will not regret taking this class! :-)
Although it sound strange that I would take a professor again if it was the hardest class I've ever taken, Prof. Orta wants you to learn but that requires extensive work from the student. Professor Orta is an amazing instructor, but the work must come from the student or else failure is likely. This was an amazing experience, if you love ASL, Do it
He is very strict but he has a reason for it. He makes class fun as much as he can. He will help you as long as you ask him for help.
Professor Orta is literally the best teacher I have ever had in my life! He is extremely passionate and only wants the best for his students. He will always be there to help and support you, and gives good feedback. He may be strict but its all for good purpose. I just finished asl 2 the 8 week class and am so excited to continue Asl with him!
Professor Orta is the best professor I've ever had!! He is incredible at his job and clearly cares for his students. His class requires a lot of effort, especially if you have no prior knowledge to ASL but it is well worth the experience.
Hes the best professor I have ever had! Hes also the hardest Ive ever had, but he cares and he wants us to succeed. But if you want to be the best signer it is worth the work, he has such a passion and that is clearly shown through his teaching.
Professor Orta is probably the best professor out there! His rules are strict, but he makes sure that you come to learn not just for a grade. He encouraged the class to participate in games and interact with each other, so by the end of the first or second class, youre already become an ASL family. There are homeworks for every units!
I took Professor Orta for ASL 1&2 8 week course. Trust me he is extremely strict, but he has good intentions. Just attend everyday, do the HW, don't procrastinate on assignments. Other than that he is funny and encourages you to be involved. By far greatest professor I've taken. Which is why I've decide to switch to a Interpreting major. ASL Rocks
He cares for his students and wants you to succeed. However, if you are struggling with something he will point out how to do it correctly. His classes are difficult but they will help you learn and prepare for what you may face in real world scenarios.
He is very organized, sticks to syllabus, and posts grades quickly! Cares for his students and wants them to succeed! He has strict rules and procedures to keep his classroom structured. Homework/assignments can be very time consuming. Must to do homework/at home exams to pass. Has games to keep class engaged and fun!
Professor Orta cares about you learning, this test and assignment intensive enviorment is geared to help you learn and is by far the most involved of all the courses. But Orta is accessible and will help you throughout. He cares about the class and the experience you get from this class is invaluable. He is a wonderful professor.
Professor Orta cares about his students and wants them to be successful. He is willing to work with those who are struggling and gives great feedback. His classes are incredibly difficult but with effort it is possible.
Prof. Orta gives detailed feedbacks and is very fast to reply back to emails. You're learning a new language so don't expect to get good grades without putting in any effort. He goes over his expectations on the first day of class so pay attention. Follow his rules because that shows your respect for him and his class. He's also very funny.
A very caring professor! I feel he is the best professor you could choose to learn this language. I love that his grades are posted that same day. You can expect plenty of homework but it isn't difficult as long as you pay attention. Do not skip class, you will miss a lot.
I took ASL 1 & 2 with Professor Orta. I have to say, I feel blessed to have been in his presence. He works very hard in maintaining a disciplined class, benefiting all his students. His classes are very engaging as he makes it fun for everyone to participate. It's imp to finish assignments and follow his course schedule or else you'll fall behind.
Professor Orta's class was my favorite and most challenging class. He's strict, but kind and supportive. If you need help or want feedback, ask him. He wants his students to succeed. Be aware of two things: don't skip class unless it's an EMERGENCY--you WILL fall behind-- and no talking! If you do either, beware the Red Pen. It takes class points.
You play games in his class almost daily to learn the material. If you need him outside of class he is always there for you.
Excellent professor!
Professor Orta is everything you could want in a professor and more. He is very accessible during the class or after, he grades all assignments quickly and most importantly, he genuinely cares about all of his students and their success in life as well as the class. He's a great man and I've benefited a lot from getting to know him.
Professor Orta is a fantastic professor. He is very serious about teaching students ASL and making sure they understand the reasons behind the way he teaches. He gives you insight on the deaf community as well. Prof. Orta is awesome!!
One of my main criteria for an amazing professor is one that has the desire to see students succeed. He is willing to work with you in order to give you great feedback, explain concepts, and his signing is clear and precise. He also has a great sense of humor, but is very strict, and I respect that. Highly recommend! (Don't be late)
He is an amazing professor
He is tough but fair. He takes the time to make sure you understand what he's teaching because he knows this is more than learning a language, it's preparing you for a job. He makes it fun so you want to learn and actually want to come to class.
Chris Orta is the best professor I've ever had. He is strict and hard but he is also caring and a lot of fun, and I learned a lot in his classes (ASL 1 and 2). As long as you show up and follow the instructions on the homework and tests you'll be fine. If you're taking the 8 week class make sure you have lots of free time. I 10/10 would recommend.
Professor Christopher Orta is strict but kind and easily the best professor Ive ever met. His personal experience paired with excellent teaching methods and fantastic personality make for some great class time. We all love Professor Orta!
Professor Orta is by far the best human I have ever met. He has not only change my life, but many others as well. He is very passionate about this and one of the best people to learn sign language from. He dedicate so much of his time outside of working to help his students further their education. I promise he will make sure you succeed!!
Professor Orta is extremely respected in his department. He sets the bar for excellence, and is very helpful and encouraging to his students to help them succeed and reach their goals. I would not want any other ASL professor!
Chris Orta is the BEST of the best! If you go to class, follow his guidelines, and practice you will pass. He is always honest and gives you feedback. He has a passion for teaching his students. He grades in a timely manner. Does except extra credit as long as you turn in everything on time. He is absolutely an incredible person and professor .
Professor Orta is an awesome professor. He grades quickly and gives helpful feedback. He is encouraging and supportive. Anyone looking to learn how to sign well should take his ASL 1 and 2 class. The class is interactive and the environment is supportive. This class requires a lot of outside work, studying, and attendance is vital to doing well.
Professor Orta is one my best teachers ever. He has a passion for teaching and cares about his students. The class is always fun and interactive. Follow his instructions and youll do great.
Professor Orta takes the time to make sure his students understand the material. He makes class enjoyable with different activities. Hes a great professor and he cares a lot about his students. His class fills up very quickly!
He's one of the best professors I've had. He's respected and respectful, teaches towards the tests, gives feedback, personal help, and is pretty much always available. You need to go every day-- miss 4 and you automatically fail, but that's expected of a language that's cumulative. He's tough, but fair, and I've seen an improvement in my skills.
Professor Orta is one of my favorite professors ever. You can tell he loves what he does. He genuinely care for his students success and will help you in anyway he can.
Orta is an all around great professor. You do have to pay attention and participate but he only has what's best in mind for you. His class isn't easy but if you are willing to put in the work needed you will become a better singer. He is always there to be a helping hand/ guide whenever you need it even through the hard times.
With amazing reviews, I signed up for this class online. Worst mistake. Youre overloaded with assignments and quizzes, all through a website so you never hear from him unless you reach out. I had constant contact w/ other classmates who were all so burned out in the end, that we essentially gave up. Didnt learn ANYTHING.
I feel as if Professor Orta could've been an okay professor in person. He did an awful job on teaching online. It felt as if he just gave us the homework from his past classes and wished us the best of luck. He just gave us tons of quizzes and a website that wouldn't work half of the time. The whole class was left disappointed and struggling.
Orta was not a good professor. The class emailed him multiple times with problems and he did not try to fix them. We suggested online zoom calls for the class to help, he shot those down. The class was also listed as a beginner class, it most definitely was not. I struggled and I have prior ASL experience. He didn't seem to care about his students.
Chris Orta is an amazing teacher he really cares about his students. Now that everything is online and in the process of getting back to normal he really tries his best to give his all in teaching. Hes not just any ordinary teacher he makes it fun and really easy to communicate with. Overall one of my best teachers at lonestar.
Professor orta is an amazing ASL teacher, if you are taking his class is to actually learn. He will be your best bet. dont get me wrong hell make you work for it, and its not easy,it will take a bunch of practice, specially for your videos and test. But for the ITP program you couldnt really ask for a better deaf teacher in the deaf community.
Prof Orta is tough but its because he cares about you actually improving your skills. His class is not an easy A class. He challenges you but ALWAYS makes himself available for questions and extra help. His class is structured and he tries to make it fun. It requires work and focus. In the end, you are better for it.
Professor Orta is awesome. This is not an easy blow off class-Not online-Not in person. LOTS of work. You WILL work for your grade, but Orta is available to help. Responds to messages quick. Was understanding during Snow-VID. Has extra credit options. Classes are interactive. He is SO willing to help! Teaches book & real life. Wants you to pass.
Professor Orta is a great teacher. This class has a lot of work but as long as you keep on top of it its not too hard. If you need help with assignments he is more than willing to help. I would recommend taking his classes.
Professor Orta is by far the best professor I ever had. I am very fortunate to have taken his class and I appreciate everything he taught me about ASL. He is genuine and cares for his students, and will go out of his way to make sure you succeed. Very dependable and clear communication at all levels. Highly recommended.
Chris Orta is one of the best professors ive ever had. There is a lot of work but if you ask for help, he will do his best to make sure you understand the material. If you put in the work, you will pass his class!
Professor Orta is one of the most dedicated professors. He cares a lot about his students. Even with the struggle of the pandemic and online classes he made his best to accommodate to the situation. I admire him for the effort. ASL3&4 are not easy at all, he makes you work for it. Thats the point, build your skills and make you a competent signer.
Professor Orta was such an amazing professor! He really helped me all throughout my asl journey. He responded very quickly anytime I reached out to him and was always willing to help give feedback on assignments.
Professor Orta is one of the best professors I've had. He's very supportive and encourages his students to participate. His feedback is extremely helpful and he's always there if you have a question.
I took Professor Orta for ASL 2 Fall 2020 during COVID. Knowing this was a ONLINE course only I knew that I had to be willing to do a lot of work on my own. Even though it was online, Professor Orta would answer any questions that I would have. The material learned was a new curriculum than we had for ASL 1, but I still learned new things.
My third class with Professor Orta. I've had a lot of Professors over the years and Orta is by far the best I have had. He wants his students to succeed and will do his best to help his students achieve that. His classes are tough, but if you put the time in and don't procrastinate you will pass. Don't think you can just skate by in this one!
If you want to learn ASL this is the best professor to learn from. He is always available to help you with your skills and will answer your questions. His assignments can be challenging but that is how you learn. He will help you if you ask for it. He has helped me prepare for my future as an interpreter.
I have taken five classes with Professor Orta and he has been one of the best teachers I've ever had. With that being said don't take this class thinking you can just get an easy "A", you will have to put in the work but it is well worth it. His main goal is for you to learn and increase your knowledge! TRUST ME if you want to learn ASL!!
Professor Orta is one of the best professors I have ever had, he cares greatly about not only your grade and progress in the class but also with helping you increase your knowledge and skills for ASL. The work he gives is quite a load but only to push you for improvement. If youre looking to learn ASL, he is the one to learn from!
His classes are so enjoyable. Funny, entertaining, and engaging. He has tough tests, both receptive and expressive, but he provides all the tools for you to really learn. Definitely not a blowoff class, you will need to practice to learn to communicate but his teaching makes sense and you will leave knowing ASL. Never a boring day with him.
It is a hard class, but it is worth it. He grades hard and sometimes you can't do anything about it but he is a lovely guy, wants you to learn and learn well, and was encouraging to me because I respected him. Do not wait on your assignments, use your feedback, ask questions, don't use your voice EVER, n remember your things for class. really LEARD
The class itself was easy, but it was frustrating being taught from an outside source and not directly from Mr. Orta. I felt as if we paid for the course for no reason since the professor was involved minimally. I would take it again only because I liked the outside source. His grading scale is unfortunate as well. A 90%=B, not an A.
I *already knew the language* and got a B. That B was a 92, by the way, which ANY OTHER PROFESSOR would mark as an A. Not Orta! No, he has a very specific system for grading, one that has completely messed up my 4.0 GPA and is already affecting my ability to transfer to my desired colleges. Take a different professor.
The class overall was very easy and at the end of it I had a 90 overall. Just keep in mind if you take his class that his grading system is 92-100 is a A not 90-100 like most classes are typically. Other than that,I can't really say much else about the class. Maybe it was due to it being online, but he wasn't really involved in the class too much.
He's a good professor and I learned a lot. Do not open your mouth during class time, he will mark points off your grade for "talking" instead of signing. And he does not accept late work at all. He's great at communicating and easily accessible outside of class an on the weekends too.
his instructions arent clear a lot of the time and he makes everything pertaining to the class very difficult to understand
This is one of the best professors I have ever had! As a first time ASL student, I believe that I picked up the language really well. Professor Orta is funny, encouraging, but strict on both attendance and participation. There is an online textbook that all assignments will be done through, but no tests were given.
Tough but rewarding class. Professor is strict but fair - no late work allowed. Attend all classes, use Unstuck AI for study prep, and you'll learn a lot. Grading can be tough, but worth it.
He is a very good professor. He is funny and sarcastic but makes sure to teach his students well. He is also very fair if you work hard and show that you are trying. As long as you show up, do the work, and learn you will love this class!
If you have the opportunity to take this man's class, TAKE IT!! I've taken his online class for asl twice and passed both with an a plus! Seriously one of the nicest professors I've ever taken. If you do your assignments he will do what it takes to make sure you end with an A. He will always respond to emails and he's super respectful too!
