Possibly one of, if not the worst teacher I've ever taken. I took Astronomy thinking it would be an easy science and interesting. Yet, Professor Paskoff ruined it for me. He doesn't teach, he will go to one slide and ramble on (had to teach myself). His tests are impossible to pass, and he gives no extra credit. I would avoid him at all costs!
He was one of the worst professors I've ever taken, He did not answer the questions we asked him. The tests were very difficult and most of the class was him talking with one picture up and no passing slides. I would not recommend at all. Horrible professor. Thank god for the online part (it helped me pass).
If you read the textbook, the test are pretty easy. He talks a lot, but it is a lecture so that's to be expected and the information is there if you're paying attention. You need to work for your grade.
Please just don't make your life more difficult WORST Professor ever !!!!!!
Avoid taking him because his tests are rarely what he teaches. He does not curve his tests even when the whole class fails his exams.
seems like a nice guy but unless you absolutely HAVE to take astronomy do not i repeat DO NOT take this class thinking it'll be fun or an easy A. He will keep one slide on the board and ramble on and on for the whole lecture. His tests are nearly impossible and the class average for the tests is usually a 52.5. He gives no extra credit. beware.
If possible, try to avoid taking this class. He spends the majority of the lecture time on 2-3 slides. Spent weeks on 1 chapter of the textbook, never moved forward and so the tests had nothing to do with the lectures. There's homework every week that does not help you with studying, only helps bring your grade up by a bit.
The class was way too hard for a beginner class. He was so knowledgeable about the topic and expected us to understand and grasp complex information in a matter of seconds. AVOID this class if you can!
I've never even considered posting on rate my professor before taking his class. Absolutely the worst professor I've ever had and can't imagine having anyone worse than him! Horrible horrible horrible! You protactically have to have written the textbook yourself in order to pass tests. Never makes time for students. Avoid at all costs.
I could be listening and taking notes and still wouldn't understand a single thing. When he's asked a question he isn't the nicest in responding and its just way too hard of a class, he knows a lot on the topic but does not know how to teach it so we learn.
This the worst class I have ever taken in my entire academic career. He's not nice and the class average for our first test was like 18/40. Don't even bother going to class, just say home and read the textbook. Don't raise your hand unless you're 100% sure of the answer because he's mean about it.
He was a very bad professor he seems a little dumb, he is very rude, one time I was running short on time and couldn't bubble my name I begged him to let me bubble it in he didn't let me do it, he is extremely rude and annoying don't take his class
Although attendance is not mandatory, if you do not go to the lecture and take extensive notes on his lectures, you will barely pass. His lectures are boring because he stays on one slide for a long period of time and talks very fast.
Terrible teacher. Absolutely can not teach
The worst thing about this professor is that the homeworks he assigned (through a website) were not consistent with the lecture. He would be talking about Chapter 2 in class, but the homework that was due was based on Chapter 4. So you were basically teaching your self 75% of the time
This professor is extremely knowledgable in this subject, but he does not have the capacity to teach others, I think he must have forgotten this was an intro class and has expectations for the class that can not be met unless you're already an astronomer. He is not a good choice, you will struggle immensely and passing is almost impossible trust me
Everything about this class is deplorable. The homework doesn't coincide with the lectures, which are just unstructured rambles. I thought it would be fascinating, yet Paskoff manages to give the most uninspired and numbingly dry lectures I've ever endured. I sincerely regret taking this class, and I would advise anyone on this page to avoid it.
I have no idea how this guy is still a professor. His lectures do not coincide with the readings assigned or the homework. He is horrible, doesn't explain anything and assigns exams that are extremely hard to complete within 50 minutes AND THEY WILL INCLUDE things not taught! Grade is based on exams and homework only. No extra credit. Avoid him.
Hoe don't do it, I'm surprised that people still take this class
This teacher is not motivational at all and is very rude to students. He is very knowledgeable about the subject but can not teach it well. Does not engage the students or inspire them. You have to work hard for the grade and he wont meet you halfway on that.
Did you ever hear in High School that when you went to College the teachers wouldn't care? A lot do, but this professor doesn't. He won't care about you as a student, your grade, or your finances, because he works at another college as well. Only here for money. He doesn't answer emails either. If your're a freshman, switch out of his class ASAP!
STUDENT BEWARE. Im a 4.0 student, but I will no longer be after this class. Taking this class was the absolute worst decision I have ever made. Dont do it, guys.
Self-teaching is the only way to pass or try to pass at least. His lecture is just looking at slides and doesnt clearly explain the concept. We are to understand the concept based on the textbook. When more then half the class is failing, he just explains that the test was fair and that we are just wrong. Does not try to correct our mistake.
does a very poor job of assessing the material & creating accurate exams, he puts material from other chapters that he claims will not be on the exam, he is very unclear and at times refuses to use a microphone in such a huge auditorium, JUST DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS UNLESS IT IS NEEDED or YOU WANT TO RUIN YOUR GPA not bad guy just a bad professor.
Please DO NOT even think of taking this class. It is impossible to pass if you are not majoring in or interested astronomy. Most of the times, he is behind the assigned readings in lectures which only make things even more confusing. Exams are like 40 questions but class average was ALWAYS around 19 or 20. IMPOSSIBLE.
This Professor is... difficult, to say the least. The exams are always ahead of the homeworks, which are in turn ahead of the lecture material. Probably best to rely on the textbook/ online materials and use the lecture time to study ahead at your own pace.
You there; looking at the professors available. Stop right there! Don't take this class because you don't want a random gen ed class to ruin your GPA. You're more worthy than that. Take this pat on the back and find a different course. Good luck, buddy.
Avoid this professor at all costs! Majority of the class failed first 2 exams and he didn't offer any extra credit. Exams are hard, even if you read the textbook. Homework doesn't coincide with lectures. Not sympathetic or helpful. He doesn't care about his students. Takes a lot of effort and time to pass the course.
This professor should be avoided at all costs. I can deal with difficult concepts, even though there shouldn't be many in a INTRO CLASS, but when you read the textbook and the test isn't on the reading that is a problem. He lacks any compassion, he knows that most of the class are failing his tests and he refuses to change the format of the tests.
Diffucult class, the material discussed in class does not correlate with the homework nor the tests that well. He talks about one chapter while the homework is ahead. He is not easy to reach. You need to teach yourself a lot of material.
I am a freshman taking this course because that's what the peer advisors gave me. I was really looking forward to this class until I realized that this professor is jokes. He is so unclear and I regret taking this class. Please don't take this class unless you want to ruin your gpa.
They only people I would recommend this class to are people who have a strong background in physics/ chemistry or plan on becoming an astronomer because if you pass this class you might as well be.
I should have checked ratemyprofessor before taking this course. One of my worst course ever taken, I would recommended no one to take this course unless they want to drop their gpa. Homework has no correlating to anything we are learning in class, you are better off skipping class and studying yourself than going to class.
He is rude and not understanding. I did all of his homework on time & attended most lectures & I'm STILL expecting my first F. He grades on very few things & doesn't care about who passes or fails his class. The textbook is mandatory & you have to teach yourself. Test questions are confusing. STEER CLEAR. THIS IS NOT A DRILL, I REPEAT STEER CLEAR!
Honestly y'all, he's not that bad. Yes, his tests/midterms can be tough bc they can get pretty specific and nitpicky. Yes, his lecture is relatively boring bc he takes so much time describing things. But he's not that bad. Do your homework (we only got to ch. 6 I think though), read the chapters, and pay attention in class. Take notes and review.
I had to drop his class because I was doing so bad. Tried multiple times to talk to him about my grade by it didnt help. Just choose another class
Lectures are often wordy, and appears as though he wants to flex his knowledge rather than teach. Both in class participation and tests depend more on you teaching yourself than the lecture. None of the test questions are covered in class, and when you get questions wrong in class he does not go over them. Low grade almost guaranteed- skip it.
I would avoid this professor. He is extremely boring and confusing
GO TO OFFICE HOURS! The only reason that I did well was that I was extremely proactive. There is a lot of reading involved, and the concepts can very easily become confusing. Paskoff is friendly and will help you if you ask but that doesn't make the material easier, so ask for help, and do it early, it'll pay off when you take the final.
as a physics 110 lab instructor: horrible horrible horrible. avoid at all costs. run away. flee. he is the WORST possible lab instructor i've ever ever seen. he has absolutely no clue what hes doing in class, goes off on pointless time-wasting tangents, gives only seventies even if u stayed up six hrs plus working on ur beyond-extra lab. AVOIDDDDDD
This professor does not teach. You have to teach yourself. Whats on the test is not in lectures and is not in the text book. Most people failed the first two test. I would avoid this professor at all cost. Hes very unclear in his lectures too.
Would not recommend this professor at all. His lectures are long and boring and he speaks so fast that its hard to understand any of the context he goes over. Test are way more complicated than what he goes over or whats on the book.
Barely any homework or class assignments to help bring up your grade because his tests are really hard. He literally spent 40 minutes on ONE slide then proceeds to tell students "no more questions because we are running out of time." That is entirely his fault. In terms of tests, most of the questions Idek where he is getting the information from.
He is really knowledgeable about Astrology. It is super clear that he enjoys talking about the subject. He tries his best to explain the subject, though sometimes it does get too technical for me. The exams really arent that hard. Just make sure you attend the lectures and read the textbook. If you go to his office hours, he is really helpful too
Professor Paskoff is not the finest of the Hunter Faculty. The lectures were often more drawn out then they had to be. There is an expensive online component that is useless besides for doing the homework. The tests aren't impossible content wise, but they are worded very particularly. I do not recommend taking this class. Its mostly physics.
Would not recommend. His lectures are very confusing and difficult to understand. Good luck asking a question, he will say hell come back to you and never does. His tests are way more difficult than what the books teaches you. You will be teaching yourself all semester.
He's really not that bad as long as you are aware astronomy is a hard course and won't be an easy A. He spends time on what people are struggling with and makes sure concepts are understood before moving on. If you have solid basic math/physics skills you will be fine. Be aware that he only got through about 1/3 of what was listed on the syllabus.
I don't know why he is rated bad but he was pretty good! Go to his office hours because it helped me a lot.
completely unaccessible outside of class. didnt answer one email of mine. tests are NOTHING like the study guide. takes the whole class period to go over ONE slide, only got through 3 out of 17 chapters. avoid if you can
Very disorganized and has poor time management, only went through 3 chapters throughout the entire semester. Lectures are difficult to follow, so you have to learn everything by reading the textbook. His test questions are difficult to understand and he might test you on information that is not in the textbook. Overall, a very confusing class.
The man knows his stuff... he just doesnt know how to teach ANY type of learner. He is disorganized & comes off rude. We only went through 3 chapters in the ENTIRE semester (there are at least 20). My biggest advice: take this with a different professor! I only passed because my classmates & I did a lot of study sessions. JOIN WHATEVER GC YOU CAN!
Read the other reviews .... he is fine.... if you do self study you should be fine the material is not difficult and he doesnt do too many chapters... just dont be lazy and study in advance it was only a couple chapters
I didn't have a good time in Prof Paskoff's class. His teaching style is really flawed and makes it really difficult to understand the material. He didn't use any helpful PowerPoint slides, 99% of the information you need to know for tests is just what he says out loud. I had to rewatch EVERY SINGLE LECTURE. This class gave me horrendous anxiety.
I feel like astronomy has to do a lot with visuals: all this guy does is type whatever he says into the zoom chat. It's almost as if he's reading off the textbook. Paskoff knows his stuff, but he simply just can't teach.
Not the best professor to teach.
He is not a bad professor at all! He is very nice and knows A LOT, but sometimes it is hard to understand his explanations. He thinks we are professors in astronomy too, but I have missed midterms and he gave me chances to make them up, I would fail if he didnt give me chance to make up. Also got not so good grades on make ups but he saw my work
Makes you pay for a website for barely any homework assigned. Tests are barely what he teaches. In the lecture he types everything he says so it wastes precious time he could have used to explain stuff. Doesn't have slides to visually show what he's talking about. Doesn't follow syllabus. Nightmare overall.
Horrible professor. His tests consist of more information on the internet rather than the lectures he gives, and his grades are more dependent solely based on the results of your tests. Also requires you to buy a textbook you don't use and a $80 subscription you'll only use about 3 times throughout the semester. He's also not really understanding.
Do not take him, he knows what hes talking about and is very knowledgeable but he doesnt do a good job at explaining things to us to make us understand. He types what hes saying in the chat and shows some slides but it doesnt help.
Paskoff is a nice professor but he doesn't know how to teach. His method of teaching is writing whatever comes to his mind in the chat and he's not organized. There's a lot of physics involved and some math so be prepared for that. I'm seriously glad that I never have to take this class ever again and if you end up having him, good luck.
This professor is a complete joke! I will admit he knows his stuff when it comes to astronomy. However, if you can stay away from this guy. All of his lessons are basically in the chat window. All he does is type what he says on the chat. Makes it seem like only his words matter even though we pay for the textbook he requires, the textbook is wrong
The major problem with professor Paskoff is he cant teach otherwise the class was an easy A as there were a lot of extra credit opportunity in homework and lowest test grade was dropped. Follow the book if you genuinely want to learn; Cant rely on him.
He is the qorse professor I've ever taken. I wasted money on nothing, he hasn't taught me anything. His lectures are very boring and he is not a good teacher. He takes the whole class to make 1 point. He will fail you on top of his horrible teaching style. We only covered 3 chapters. You will be teaching yourself. Idk why cuny pays this guy.
Lectures weren't very interesting but it's not too hard if you take a second and think about the concepts discussed. Homeworks were also helpful in preparing for the tests.
This class gave me depression and so much anxiety, it starts off with like 250 students and ended with like 70. His lectures are longgggggg and confusing, he is very knowledgeable but it is very hard to follow along. He is a pretty easy grader though.
Does NOT respond to emails(literally does not at all) Asking him in person doesn't help either, Doesn't fully cover topics in class so he has SUPPLEMENTARY lessons outside of class time & DOESN'T even upload the recordings for them. Didn't assign hw for weeks and then assigns them last minute days before the exam. Most disorganized prof. ever taken
This professor is just completely oblivious to the students in his class. For one he never checks his email. You can send him several and he completely just ignores it. He has no problem sending an email so he's ignoring intentionally. He's also very repetitive in terms of lecture (its just bad).
Doesn't believe in study guides, doesn't complete lectures in class so he has to hold lectures OUTSIDE of class time, and will emphasize things to study only to not include them at all & put info you've never seen before. He also requires you to pay $80 for a homework site only to never assign homework ://
By far the worst prof ever had. Teaches along the same tangent for multiple lectures only to barely progress into the chapters. Literally crams alot of information in the matters of DAYS before the exam. He does grade on a curve though but do yourself a favor and look elsewhere if you're really concerned about learning and your gpa.
Listen all of these reviews here are accurate. If you skip a lecture, you will start falling behind. Quizes are so difficult and he's very confusing. the only way to reach him is his in person office hours lol. emails are ignored. Would never take this class again.
He gives a difficult class but he is very knowledgeable and loves talking to students during office hours/answering questions. A lot of people don't show up to class don't pay attention and don't study and then complain when they do poorly on the exam. You can only get out as much as you put in. Taking his class invoked a love of Astronomy in me.
Professor Paskoff is very knowledgeable about astronomy and cares about his students. He is a very easy grader. You only need to get 8 out of 40 questions correct on his exams to pass. The people who complain about him don't show up to lecture or study. If his lectures are difficult to understand, just read the textbook and study, you'll be fine.
He is hard to connect with like he just seems so stern. But you really have to be there for the lectures and be present because the tests are based off of them. Don't take this professor if you can't sit in a lecture hall and just take notes for an hour long without getting distracted. He is good at explaining things though I feel.
Absolutely awful. This professor is completely disconnected from reality. He talks for an hour with no parameters then assigns homework with 100+ questions. No study guides. No clear development within the course. This is his hobby, too bad we had to pay. Do not take this professor.
The class itself was ok but i had to pay like 100 bucks for hw that we only used a few times, he said to have the textbook by the first day but don't do that. He curves like crazy bc everyone fails his exams. But hw answers are on quizlet. When u ask a question he does everything but answer it.
woww he is the best, please take it!!!
this was easy and you just had listen in class. the exam were easy too.
he is super funny. pls use his office hour. he helps a lot in his office hours.
The Pearson homework is quite expensive, but a great learning tool, just make sure to keep on top of it. I can't emphasize how important it is to take notes during his lectures and study for the exams (which were pretty hard) as he can tend to ramble + isn't always clear so its up to you to really understand the material.
Seems passionate about astronomy that being said we barely got thru Ch's we were meant to Days b4 exams rushes thru lectures to fit things in. You can read the text and do hws all you want and exams are still super hard. Doesn't have review sheets doesn't emphasize topics to study. Questions on exams were so niche & had nothing to do with readings.
His lectures make absolutely no sense. he just talks, and talks. does everything but answer your questions. The exams do not match the homework. AVOID THIS CLASS AT ALL COSTS. Only take if you are willing to teach yourself all the content. He doesn't give study guides.
He spends his lectures rambling & it's hard to keep up. Tests are nothing like the homework/lectures. Even taking notes from the textbook (which we have to pay $80 for) doesn't help much. Refuses to create review sheets or post his ppts. He is clearly passionate about the subject but isn't good at teaching. Think my highest test was a 55%.
Everything about this professor is awful. His lectures are a mess, his exams are a joke, he uses scantrons for a massive lecture hall that he takes 15 minutes of your test taking time to distribute. He's doesn't respond to emails or answer questions, he is dismissive and arrogant. Homework site costs $80. NO review or study guides.
Professor Paskoff is a great teacher. His lectures are very long and can sometimes be all over the place, for the most part he provided information that was necessary. The only reason I didn't rate him a 5 is because we were supposed to cover much more of the course and we barely got to chapter 5. You have to read the book, that is what saved me!!
This is a tough class if you don't read the textbook and take advantage of the professor's office hours. Class time is very long and it could be very uninteresting, but the professor does take time to answer questions and even takes time after class to do so. I'd say to go to office hours whenever you can, he truly is very understanding and caring
He's not terrible, but you shouldn't solely depend on the lectures. Class is kind of disorganized; he'll sometimes try to fit lots of material into a few days. If you ask questions, he will try to answer them in-depth though. Just read the textbook, do the quizzes on Pearson, go to his office hours/ask questions and you'll be fine.
Does not believe in study guides. Be prepared to attempt memorizing every single word of the textbook chapters needed because "everything is fair game" as you answer how many atoms are in the period at the end of this sentence on the exam. I got into mini depressive episodes before every exam and was probably not worth the grade I got.
Chronic yapper but his lectures usually don't cover enough to pass the exams. The class isn't hard you just have to give yourself a few days to review the textbook thoroughly and you will pass easily. I didn't listen to his lectures after the first month but didn't get under a 90 on his exams because I read the textbook.
He's super passionate about the topic and super helpful in office hours. He does ramble a little bit and could have better organization, but he's a nice guy and he wants you to pass. I would take him again, just be sure to put in the work and actually read the textbook lol
Professor is very disorganized and untimely to the point where he doesn't cover everything for exams. No one has time and rushes the exams because he spends the first 20 minutes handing papers out in a huge lecture hall. He also makes you waste money on a site where he assigns little to no homework and barely uses anything from the textbook as well
he is awful i wont recommend taking him there is alot of other professors who is way better than him and his exams was so hard compared to other professors
Not only is he disorganized, but the way he talks is straight from the textbook, making you second-guess yourself with a lot of physics terminology. The test certainly does not reflect what you learn in class, and I feel like he picked the most complicated questions from an outdated textbook. I learned more from Google than from him. Do not take.
Professor Paskoff is not only disorganized but unhelpful in regards to everything. His tests never made sense to the material he was teaching. He drops the lowest test grade and curves but it still doesn't save your grade. You have to buy pearson for only 4 homework assignments, which is a waste of your money. Overall would not get recommended.
Lectures are honestly useless and the exams were always much harder than the homework's. But, I failed all exams (got around the average of 30%) and got curved to a B. He doesn't explicitly say it in the syllabus, but he's open to dropping an exam based on how bad the class does. He's nice as a person though, if that matters to you.
Lectures useless. Tests unnecessarily difficult and were nothing like homework's or textbook questions. Averages were always in the 30s. As long as you do at least 40-50 points above average on the exams you'll probably get an A. Not good at teaching. Doesn't believe in study guides. Take someone else, will cause unnecessary stress.
