Awesome teacher, lots of fun, great stories. Hes Irish as well! A genuinely good teacher.
Not one of the greatest teachers that I've had. Everything that is lectured leads back to him being irish and pubs.

i hated this class as a whole but i liked lecture. to bad lecture had nothing to do with what he tested on for the most part. i couldnt stand class and hes a hard ass on papers. sorry to say this class was a waste of $$
These other reviews seem WAY off base. Dr. Paulin was excellent, and always available for extrahelp and conversations. He expects a lot, but that is why we are there, isn't it? Information is relevant to the tests. He is a hard grader, but extremely fair.
The best history professor I've ever had. You get out what you put in with him. Takes care of his students and knows his subject extensively. Great sense of humor but don't expect to be lazy and not read.
if you're just looking to pay your money, nod off and wake up with a shiny piece of paper, his classes are not for you. however, if you're actually interested in history and learning, paulin is invaluable. (bonus: you also learn about the best whiskey for your value)
Decent teacher, however horrible grader. I have never recieved less than an "A" on any college paper, accept his. Case in point- what a ****.
amazing lectures... but the hardest grader out there period.
The guy is a fist rate jerk. His lectures are boring and he grades unfairly.
His lectures are very dull. The guy is a shlub.
Awesome
Quite a jerk. No wait, the biggest jerk out there. His lectures could not get any more boring. He should quit and loose some weight.
This guy is a jerk. Not just any jerk, the biggest. Enough said.
Awesome, hard but fair, and made the subject interesting. Take notes and do the study guides, and you cant fail. He actually gives you the test about a week before hand to study (they are essay tests)
pretty good
i had him for a summer class, and it was hard cause i dont do essay test well, but he's really interesting and funny
i loved his class definetly one to take if you dont mind working and applying yourself. his lectures are the best i've sat through, he occasionally trails off topic, but still a great professor. definetly take his class even if its just for the lectures.
Essays are difficult enough without them being timed.
i hate history, and he makes it interesting
This is a class where you need to do the work he assigns and attend class regularly if you want to have a good grade. I didn't do this but I still managed a C in his class. He knows his history. His classroom is kind of boring and his lectures are dry, but he will mix in a little humor as well. His quizes are easy, but his essay exams are pretty difficult because he wants as much detail as you can manage in the essay as well as the one 2 page paper you need to write.
Should give quizzes and test that are multiple choice! Can't remember most boring people I read about's names unless I see them again!
Took this class back in like '97. Best teacher at MCC besides Prof Cole. Took so many notes I thought my hand would fall off. Excellent lecturer. Covers topics commonly left out of western civ.
He was extremly hard. I thought he was also rude at times. You do have to do your work but he can be so boring that you get confused and when it comes to a test you're screwed!
Summer class - fast pace! I HATE college! 7 years, 200 credits. Go to all his classes, copy EVERYTHING! Test day - show up 3 hours prior, read all the notes, skim the book, expect 3 hour exams, write the whole time. You get a B+. He lets his dogs pick the essay questions. Great ****en stories. He made History fun! One of my best professors, ever!
great lectures, tests are HORRIBLE. All essay. Screwed if you don't take advanced comp' first.
excellent stories. good sense of humor. he really gets into the history, makes it interesting. He lets you write a research paper OR draw a cartoon. do both, you get extra credit. quizes are multchoice, tests are all essay. he gives you 5 possible essays, then picks 2 or 3 at random (dog may be nvolved here)
knows everything about everything
I am willing to bet that the people givingthe worst reviews are the people who flunked. Yes, his tests are all essay BUT he gives you the questions a week prior. If you study, take notes and go to EVERY class you are golden. I thought he was hilarious, he knew his stuff and made it interesting. Grades tough but fair. Was always helpful if you asked
phenomenal professor. hilarious. SO SMART. literally knows EVERYTHING. made western civ extremely interesting. will help you out TONS if you need it. if you fail the first exam and do better on the second, he raises the first exam grade. looks like the typical irish red sox fan from boston. AWESOME. take him.
Class is generally easy, and sparce workload. But his grading is too arbitrary. Would write brilliant essays, but give you like a B-. besides that a good class.
I've had him several times now and always recommend him. He teaches real college and expects you to give him the same in return. Exams are essay and he only gives As if you really earn them. Amazing, intensive lectures, so take lengthy notes and don't tune out. Has short-man syndrome, but is always fair and polite. Students either thrive or bomb.
Good Teacher. Need to take notes during lecture. Studying before the exams and quizes is a key to doing good in this class. The studying that you do before the exams and quizes will either make or break you. i would write down what i needed to know that would be on the exam so i could remember it better. Not the easiest or hardest teacher.
Paulin's hardcore. His 200s are the best because they tend to have better students so he works everyone harder. I love the readings he assigns. He likes teaching dark history but he isn't obsessed with gore. Can be standoffish and intimidating but honestly pretty nice once he's comfortable around you. Don't ask him stupid questions. TAKE NOTES.
He was condescending and immature. His class was interesting, but he graded my work unfairly.
Class was amazing. Show up on time for class, listen intently, take notes, follow syllabus & you should have no issue passing. He provides all questions that will be on exams with syllabus on first day! Inserts interesting "dark humor" regularly which help students to retain knowledge beyond semester.
He seemed nice and easy at first but grades unfairly. It is a History class not an English class he needs to grade by knowledge of the information given not grammer. He is also rude with his comments on his quizes and exams
Professor Paulin was a hard grader and all the quizzes and exams were in paragraph or essay format. In every class he went over a powerpoint and usually told some interesting stories. You need to study to get a good grade.
He was a great professor!! Really funny and had great stories. The exams are all essay format but aren't too hard if you're prepared. I would recommend this class!
OMG I loved professor Paulin, so much so I am taking his class next semester too. His lectures are interesting and though he has fry humor makes the time go by a little faster. All essay tests and quizzes but really isn't as hard as you would think. By far my favorite history teacher.
Lots of information, but between the lectures and the book, with adequate study time you are sure to pass.
Knows his stuff and makes history fun. I was not looking forward to taking a history class but he kept it interesting and I now have a new appreciation for history! Take his class if you can
He is a great guy. helpful. he has vast knowledge about history and can make student understand in a fun way. i would definitely recommend him.
Most boring class I've ever taken and History is my favorite subject. He just talks all class and the homework doesn't make any sense to the current stuff you learn about. Would not recommend.
In all honesty, he was all right and a nice person. But a lot of people agreed with me inn this course that he was making it too hard for a level 101 history class. All of his exams and quizzes are essay, and each time I took a test/quiz I felt good about it and ended up with mediocre grades. His comments weren't very clear for improvement too...
Great historian! Tests and quizzes are blue book essay. Not hard but you must put in the effort to read the material and think about what you are going to write prior to the test. He really doesn't care if you show up for lecture or not. But if you don't you will miss out on the topics/events/people who he feels significantly affected history.
Professor Paulin is above and beyond a great professor. History is clearly important to him and he makes it relevent. He was very clear and very helpful. Tests and quizzes are in essay format and you are expected to learn and understand the material, but if you put in the effort, your grade will reflect it. He was always available for help.
He gives way too much work with due dates very close together. A lot of reading from 3 different text books quiz every week so much to remember for quizzes which you get 25 min for. I am an A student and have a C in his class. If you plan on taking his class make sure you are not taking many other hard class. He is a cool guy but excepts too much.
Professor Paulin was a nice guy, he just is not a good professor. Tough grader, does not give feedback, and his lectures do not match up with his quizzes or exams. I do not recommend his class.
Knows his subject. Grades honestly. Can explain thoroughly what a "Kurgan" is, and not like how we all can, in that "the guy from Highlander??" way... actually knows.
Class lecture were entertaining, factual and usually three classes behind homework assignments so reading ahead of class is mandatory. All exams are chosen readings from separate book never lectured on in class. Final paper requirements were muddy but He said it was a new question for the final paper. My advice - ask questions for clarity.
Professor Paulin is a great guy but his quizzes and essays are usually one or two lectures ahead of his quizzes. Regarding his exams, they are very difficult. His exams usually involve reading about 8 different texts, only two text for which you will be asked questions about. His exams also have very little to do with his lectures.
Professor Paulin is just what you would expect from a college professor. He does expect a lot from his students, but if you prepare and take the class seriously, you won't have a problem. He's kind and easy to talk to and passionate about what he does. Also his dad jokes make the class pretty enjoyable.
Paulin is a good guy, but he doesnt make a great professor. He doesnt throughly explain what any of the stuff on his slides mean, leaves you kinda clueless when it comes to the exams, even if they are all on blackboard. Quizzes are a chapter ahead. Wouldnt recommend
I would say that the attendance isn't mandatory since everything he quizzes you on and tests you on are in the book, but he notices who shows up and who doesn't, and it affects your grade. You have to read a chapter a week, about 40 pages, and take a quiz weekly. Class shouldn't be too hard if you study that textbook religiously. Lectures r boring
DO NOT EVER TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. lectures are very boring and excessive. The lectures do not help you with quiz or test. this class gives me a terrible headache.
If you are a straight a student history major, please stay away from this course. If you are a straight a student in a related major, definitely stay away from this course.
He's pretty straight forward about what he expects. Weekly quizzes are based on the textbook readings. He has all the lectures on blackboard. Tests are based on lectures and on the documents that you have to analyze, which isn't that hard. The subject itself isn't that interesting but he tries to make it as interesting as possible.
NEVER AGAIN
It's a class you need to put in work for - you get in what you put out. He's an excellent professor and he clearly loves the topic he's teaching about, but seriously study for his exams. You need to write a LOT for a good grade. Gives online quizzes but doesn't remind you about them after the first few.
Worst professor
Quiz's are a chapter ahead and lectures the after . Each chapter ranges 30-50 pages long given a lot of information to retain and understand. Would've been helpful to have a focus for quiz's. Pointless to lecture on chapters that were graded ahead on taking quizzes. Might as well read and learn on your own. Power points don't help on exams,Nice Guy
The toughest grader I have ever had. Its a history class not some high level math course. I should not have to work this hard to be able to pass a simple history course. He expects you to read six documents for each test and write essays using very specific examples but does not allow you to have the documents for reference during the test.
Also there is an online quiz every week that is ahead of the lectures so you are basically teaching everything to yourself for every quiz, which in my opinion is ridiculous. I took the course to be taught not to teach myself.
Paulin is sweet and kind, and is extremely knowledgeable about every topic he teaches. Hes fun to listen to! His class is hard to follow because he doesnt remind you of online quizzes that are mandatory, and basically makes you teach yourself everything, as youre expected to know content before the lecture starts. It sucks that hes so nice.
Prof. Paulin expects a lot out of his students. He has weekly quizzes and what you put into the class you get out of it. There is lots of reading and YOU NEED TO PREPARE FOR HIS EXAMS. My class was online so I had a lot of time to prepare but he is a hard grader and sometimes expects too much from his students. He is very straight forward.
Worst teacher ever, still think about this class being my only grade below a B. the exams are crazy dont even think of taking the class with him. History classes shouldnt be graded this hard overall. DO NOT TAKE THE CLASS WITH HIM Youre welcome
Was very hard following his class due to covid he's a very tough grader he wants all information, you will be teaching yourself so be prepared.
Tough grader, knows his stuff but tests are hard.
I was doing alright in this class, until I stopped going since he would always go off topic and the information came from reading the book anyway. He noticed I stopped attending and though my work was better, my grade went down. Marked me off a lot of points and wouldn't tell me what for. I think he notices and didn't like that I stopped attending.
Horrible with following accommodations and didnt help when I needed clarification. Only repeated questions word for word and barely passed.
He is the worst teacher I have ever had. His class is all online and he doesn't even teach. He makes you read one chapter per week (about 40 pages) and you have to take a quiz on it weekly. As for exams you must write essays on about 8 documents but only 2 documents show up on the exam. You are basically teaching yourself everything. TOUGH grader.
Was a very awful professor. Didnt receive a good grade off of one assignment that I gave him and he told me to give up and stop taking his course.
Did bad on exam 1 studied for exam 2 (somehow got a lower grade) met to discuss grade and was assured I wouldn't have to worry. can't help but feel a lack of trust from this experience. one week its "Don't worry about failing" then it's "You failed my class, there's nothing you can do". Please save yourself time and do not take this man's class.
He doesn't actually teach online, it's more like giving you assignments and then grades them. You learn on your own and are given a multitude of essay questions to answer for the exams. He's definitely a harsh grader and won't give you a decent grade unless your essays are near perfect. I wouldn't recommended taking his class if you can avoid it.
Difficult class. Unclear instructions. Is available for communication but doesn't necessarily make students feel comfortable contacting him.
This man is a horrible professor that doesnt know what plagarism is. He claimed because I used an outside source that plagraism even though it was cited, might be taking legal action against him. I have never met such a rude, obnoxious, disrespectful person in my life and ive been to multiple colleges as im pursuing multiple degrees.
Professor Paulin is inaccessible to his students, rude, and bitter. 75% of your total class grade falls on three 90 minute timed essay exams, where he'll leave feedback with little explanation, but will happily dock points, baselessly insinuate cheating, and is unwilling to help students if they are struggling, instead advising they withdraw.
Professor Paulin was a very knowledgeable professor and I'm a bit pained to see that his rating is as low as it is. Yes, he is tough with grading and I have never received an exam or test grade above a 90 in his class. He loves his job and has an incredible sense of dry humor. He just has high expectations and that's respectable.
His feedback is rude and condescending. I feel like I wasted my time every lecture; could've just read the slides on my own. He's knowledgeable...yes. He said "don't explain your quotes" for a paper, that makes no sense. DIFFICULT exams, quizzes EVERY week, and I have no idea what he truly thinks is worthy of a good grade. The end.
Doing fine in the course, sure is a lot of work as some other reviews have pointed out, but PROFESSIONALLY SPEAKING this professor's feedback is atrocious and not something I would call "feedback", more of a message of condescension. I cannot pick apart what is actually supposed to help me from the feedback I received on our most recent exam.
Cons: self-taught learning, not interactive, want a good grade? get ready to work from 7 am to 5 pm reading and listening to lectures preparing for the exams and quizzes. Pros: quick to respond to emails I contemplating dropping 3 times. I didn't but only got an A because of the copious hours of work I put into it.
The professor does nothing but read his slides in class. You have 2 separate books. You will have to read 1 chapter every single week along with reading Documents for exams. Quizes are easy but every single week is too much. The exams are soo hard, you have to read long documents and then write essays in class, and he is a tough grader.
The low ratings are very unfair towards Prof. Paulin. He is very clear about his grading and what's expected. You are given EVERYTHING on DAY ONE from quizzes to exam dates and even what's on the exams. If you can't pass this class, its due to your own poor time management skills. This is college; you have to put in the work and SHOW UP.
Yes, Professor Paulin is a tough grader, but he is VERY clear with what is expected of his students and will grade you according to those standards. Yes you need to read and put in your time, but show him your efforts, show him your desire to excel and he will guide as much as possible. Communication is key, let him know where you're at.
Fine lectures (that's all class ever is), but terrible assignments and overall structure. Also unclear and a very harsh grader. Does not care about the student's success, regardless of the effort being put forth.
Won't respond to emails, condensing to other students, and told the whole class that they earned C's after he gave vague directions on test day. Exams are 75% of the grade; no makeups unless you are hospitalized and can send him proof; so no moving dates at all even if you have events like weddings, funerals, or anything you can "skip"
DO NOT TAKE. Whole class is basically against him. There is ZERO clarity between him and students and he DOES NOT care about other people. No office hours and is too busy to Zoom, so that and wont respond to emails, just blackboard posts. Sooooo.... its a no for me.
Unorganized professor overall, will not extend deadlines or admit fault, also doesnt respond or give feedback outside of the 3 exams
Run away
Fighting for my life just to barely pass an intro class.
Please DO NOT take this professor. He is so unfair and does not care about his students. He is such a tough grader and even the SMALLEST mistake will cost you your entire grade. Doesn't want to help and his lectures teach you NOTHING. His tests are very heavy and the exams are basically your entire grade. No homework, just quizzes and exams.
prof paulin isn't a bad teacher, but his class/grading structure is meh. there are no opportunities for extra credit, just quizes and exams. every class is a lecture with the slides all available online--it can get very boring. but, if you go to class and take notes on things he emphasizes you should do fine. don't recommended, though.
Does not provide feedback on tests, unreachable, unapproachable, rude. Find another teacher.
we learn subject matter 2 weeks after we take a quiz on it. exams are insane basically an english class.
Dont take him.Nice in person rude online. Will grade u AWFUL & tell u to drop out. Failed me on every exam & didnt tell me what I did wrong when asked Unhelpful Told me I should just drop after 1 exam Wish I could say more but cant bc of character limit. Love history but failed bc of his grading and quizzes ahead of lectures. Now getting all As so..
Great Professor, would definitely recommend taking his classes. The Exams are tough and there is a lot of writing so be prepared for that.
First and ONLY time i have had to drop out of a class. After first exam, he accused 80% of the class of plagarism, because the essay was not down to a T of how he wanted it (which wasnt clear in the first place). If you want to self learn and only have 1 class a semester, i guess this is the class for you. Feedback is rude. Does not want to teach.
Overall, his work is very challenging but as long as you read the assigned material and attend class you should be able to pass.
The only class I struggled with in my first semester of college. Very unforgiving grader.
Paulin's class is challenging, but going to lectures and using resources like Unstuckstudy can really help. He has high standards, but you'll learn a lot if you put in the work.
I had him, worst class ever taken. He has no tolerance and will make you hate college!
A great teacher demands that the student actually work. So just listen and do it.
He's a pretty great guy. He's strict but honestly if I had to teach a class where half the students don't care about what im saying I would be too. He makes a few jokes but weirdly he's never heard a 9/11 joke, maybe tell him one then ask for extra credit.
Is a tough grader, would take points off for little mistakes. Quiz and exams sometimes land on the same week indicating extra work. The material for me was boring, but overall he is not bad. You do need 2 textbooks. Attendance is not mandatory nor does he take attendance. He doesn't try to learn the names of students. Never taking his class again.
Save yourself and don't take this class. His exam grading is harsh and unreasonable. Getting a 70 an above is nearly impossible. His feedback is not concise or helpful. So much effort into receiving mediocre grades. Not worth your time.
The most difficult course I've ever taken it was so insane. The level of detail required for exam questions was diabolical. Readings were so difficult to read and understand. So challenging that it actually affected my mental health. Was able to get a B cuz I used CliffsNotes & Google but it was still so hard. Save yourself
