annoying mannerisms, incredibly boring.
He's BORING but clear and straightforward. The class is VERY easy.
He's a funny guy, likes to pick on ppl(nicely), but I couldnt get above a C
cant get above a B unless your hemingway or joyce
doesnt grade very fairly, boring as hell
nice guy, but hard grader...hard to get above a C
he makes you feel so stupid you wonder how you ever got into college
Boring and Unfair. I'm a senior (English) with all A's, except in this class!

cant slack off, but if you work hard enough you'll recieve the grade you deserve
boring class/discussions, slow + grinding, he's a bore too

A fun teacher but very hard. His voice cracks all the time, making class funny
Worst teacher EVER, made me feel stupid! Made me glad to not be an English major
Very hard grader...Always finds something wrong with paper...Don't take
he looks like he should be a nice old man fisherman but he is an evil man
Arrogant prof. Discussions very enlightening. DO NOT SLACK OFF!!!
Incredibly arrogant+confusing assignments+boring reading=eng teacher from HELL
harsh grader, a lot of work, but knows what he's talking about
This guy is a real character. If you don't read then you will be lost.
If you don't like to write...RUN FOR YOUR LIFE...other then that the class is ok
discussion-oriented;makes exams SO hard even Shakespeare himself would fail them
Easy class but fast pace. Grade based on 1 midterm and 2 big papers!
if you are in to torcher .. take his class
Hard grader, lots of papers, makes you feel like a complete idiot
Arrogent Hard Prof, Does not give A's! Will Make you Cry!
If you can't handle this class you deserve to get F's.
He's a bitter, mean old man and he made me cry. I took the class online - SO hard to keep up. I went to meet with him in person and he was like, why are you here? ****.
Penna was hard, but if you are willing to do the work and learn, his class is really worthwhile because he knows his stuff!! He does give A's..I worked hard to get mine!
His class is painful, I would rather go to the dentist and have teeth pulled than go. He is only interested in his own ideas, and he is bitter and mean.
Teacher is not nice and very grammer strict! I got an A, but I was in the minority. He is also anal about attendence!
I absolutely hated this class. It was so bad I dropped out, would not recommend it to anyone.
Alot of work for a freshman english class. Material is very boring and so is each day of class. He is also a very hard grader.
He is a very hard professor- this is true. However, if you work really hard you can get good grades in his class. Also he is a great teacher and a student can really benefit from his teaching. It is what you learn from the class- not what grade you get.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER! GET OUT NOW!! The worst decision of my freshman year was taking his class. It does not matter how hard you try if he doesnt like the way you write you wont do good. I am getting A's on 400 level class papers,LUCKY to get a B on his.
Not an impossible class...if you follow his directions and bring your papers to the writing center you will get B's, doesn't give A's!!!!!

I am now a senior and out of all 4 years this was by far the worst class I have had. He is mean, sarcastic, grumpy, and a very hard grader. DO NOT take this class. I get good grades in my classes but with this class it doesn't matter how hard you work.
awful don't even want to waste words describing how horrible he is!
Funny Funny Guy.. If you have a dry and strange sence of humor.. Very hard grader but I got a B and I came away with alot. He does tend to focus on his own interpertations of the readings though. Always willing to help if you go to the writing center so if you need it GO GO NOW stop reading and GO!
HORRIBLE, get out. Hes soo boring and u have to write bout what he wants to hear, ur opinions dont matter, might as well let him make u cry.
TERRIBLE!!! RUN AND SAVE YOUR LIFE!!! He has to be the WORST english teacher I have ever had...very very tough grader or papers that are ridiculous. The research paper is ludicrious and he is obsessed with plagiarism. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
Spent the whole freakin semester on James Joyce!! It was terrible. Never want to hear the words paralysis, manipulation, or incompleteness EVER again! Do not take this class!
most horrible class ever! dont read anything except james joyce. every story has the same theme, so it becomes quite repetitive. all the other classes got to basically choose their research paper assignment but we had to do our on plagiarism! does not explain things well at all.
The reading was a little on the heavy side, and the lectures were a little boring, but this was a helpful class. If you show up to all the classes, participate, and read the readings you should do fine. I worked hard in the class and got an A-, so it isn't impossible. Overall he's a good teacher.
He's a hack. Doesn't teach, and expects students to learn on thier own how to do the papers. What a waste.
horrible, mean man! Do not take this class with him.
this guy i know personally and he dicked me over, dont take this class even if you are very smart
on of my best classes. it was hard at first, but i learned a lot.
I took this class in a summer session before my FRESHMEN fall semester and got B's on all the papers, so his class is DEFINITELY doable its just a lot of work and a lot of Dubliners. he is helpful though when you conference with him-he tells you exactly what he wants to see in your papers.research paper is rough but teaches you alot about plagirism
Material was interesting, lectures sometimes good, sometimes had a reach that exceeded their grasp. Not a tough class, just take good notes and at least do your reading before the test.
Well, I had this guy for WebCT, he was pretty understanding that I took the class online bc I had a busy schedule. Research paper topics were pretty lame though. Either "Dubliners" or plagiarism... Seriously....why do you need 10 pages to say that cheating is wrong and you'll get in big trouble if you do it?
rather vague; random and uninteresting paper topics esp for research paper; switch profs asap; gives decent curve though
Worst Teacher ever if you have him for english drop and get a different teacher because you will be bored out of your mind!!!!
OMG never take this class online!! its sooo much harder then if you take it in the class. He is a really hard grader and we had quizzes when the ppl that took it in the classroom didnt. DO NOT TAKE ONLINE!!!!
You never know how much you miss someone until they're gone. Penna was a great guy and a pretty good professor, once you get passed his abstract way of thinking and figure out how to write of good grabber (which I mastered by the way thanks to him...). Oh, and he has the coolest hair on Earth!
You have to read everything he assigns and he expects you to put a little thought into it. Discussions are really helpful, and if you show him you read he'll gladly help you understand it. An A is easy if you do the readings, and he lets you re-write papers. Very helpful
There are certainly better teachers for English 110. He is very unclear about the text and assignments. At times during his lecture, it seems as though he's just making stuff up as he goes along. He likes class participation, but it's not worth it since it's impossible to answer a question correctly. He wants you to do well though.
He comes off as mean and condescending at first. After a while you get used to him. You must write exactly what he wants you to on papers to get a good grade. Good grades are not too hard to get in this class. Research project is a pain. Took this as an honors class and it was annoying but not too bad. ALWAYS runs class to the end.
Pretty good teacher, nice funny guy. Seems kind of unclear sometimes, and has a one track mind; although this is an honors English class and there's a focus for the whole class. Based class around technology, but has a limited knowledge of it, and seems confused. Overall, I'd say not a terrible E110 teacher.
Pretty close minded. He thinks he's open to new opinions but he will shoot down whatever you think and give you a bad grade if you don't write what he wants. Got a B- to a B+ on every paper no matter how hard I worked, so this honors class was an easy B, but impossible A.
Extremely hard to get an A but I did learn more or less how to right a paper. He is very big on organization which is something that I struggled with. He also is very into "grabbers"- (the opening lines of your intro). He allows for revisions. I got (B)s and (B+)s on my papers. Hope that helps.
I loved Dr. Penna. He was very interesting and a very fair teacher. I have no interest in english, but the class was not bad at all. Learned a lot about being a better writer!
Penna is an EXTREMELY hard grader. never gives out A's because he feels no paper is good enough for an A. He always finds something wrong with your paper so it's impossible to do well. DONT take Penna if you want a good grade bc he will only bring down your GPA
I had Dr. Penna in the summer for ENG110 and loved it. He can be a tough grader, but he clearly spells out everything he wants in an essay. So, if you just do what he says you should get an A. It worked for me and I got A's on almost all my papers. He is extremely helpful and will take extra effort to make sure you do well.
Great professor! The class was pretty easy and always very interesting. The readings were good and we only had 4 papers to do, so the workload was pretty light. I easily got an A on every paper and he allowed students who did't do well to revise so theres no reason you can't get an A if you're not being just plain lazy.
Professor Penna is awesome- funny & makes class interesting. semester is divided into 3 parts - stories, poems, and plays. For a few weeks you focus on each. Every class you just discuss the readings you did for homework (most of which you can do 10 min before arriving). There are no exams, the only grades are 4 papers. great class & prof
I think people rate Penna too harshly. He is a very intelligent professor who is more than willing to help any student. Some lectures may be dry but he loves to help students who make the extra effort. Go to office hours and he will definitely get you a better grade on your paper. I definitely recommend him if you want to improve writing skills.
Take Penna if you want to learn a lot about reading or writing. Will help you in office hours and let you revise for a better grade. Definitely not an easy A. Few people got A's on papers. Interesting reading assignments and very enjoyable class. Penna is intelligent and entertaining. I learned a lot and had a good time doing it! Light coursework.
I did nto want to take Dr. Penna do to his low ratings on this website. I was dreading going to class originally, esspecially when his first question is "What is real?" But, Dr. Penna is really a great professor and he makes class enjoyable. Participate and bring your book to class and it will be easy. This coming from a math major
Penna is a great Professor and such a nice guy. He jokes around with the class and is very knowledgeable on the subject material. But he is a VERY hard grader. It is almost impossible to get an A in his class. If you're looking for an easy A think about another prof. However he will make you a better writer in the long run. Easy B impossible A.
He's a really hard grader. Very nice guy but I often felt that the work I put in did not reflect my grades.
If I didn't like poetry before this class I hate it now. Every time I would share my opinion, which he encouraged, he told me I was wrong. I have never dreaded an English class more at UD and have never disliked a professor so much. He's annoyingly critical and I felt like he was being condescending half the time. Avoid him.
Honestly, the last place this man belongs is teaching. He doesn't respect his students and is very condescending. If you have a difference of opinion it is never valued. You spend class time talking about things you already knew from reading the text. He made me hate everything about british lit. WORST EVER!
He's a tough ass grader and expects a lot from you when you take his class. If you don't enjoy the subject matter (or reading at all) don't embark on the journey of a lifetime into the depths of english hell, because this guy is gonna expect a ton from you. The online stuff it strenuous and he grades it like a short essay. Good guy though.
Honestly, he's a pretty rude guy and even if he says there is no right answer, there is a right answer. Condescending and only values your opinion if it's the same as his. In general, he tells you what you need to do to succeed and if you listen to him you will do fine.
Penna is seriously one of the best that this university has to offer. He's funny, insightful, and truly cares about the well-being and success of his students. Weekly postings you need to do (for an easy grade) and a few papers, but overall one of the professors who has truly made my time at UD fulfilling, and has a contagious love for his subject.
He's a great professor who keeps the material interesting. Class discussions and short, easy weekly postings count for a significant part of the grade. Not an absurdly hard grader on papers, but not an easy A either. Can revise for credit. Only complaint is while he says there is "no right answer", there definitely is and he is waiting to hear it.
He makes inappropriate, rude jokes at the students' expense and doesn't apologize. He even makes fun of students for asking a question if it was already answered, even if the answer was unclear. And with him, the answer is always 100% unclear. Then, after making the joke, he yells at the students for not listening.
He refuses to answer questions in class regarding papers and quizzes and yells at students that try and understand his grading criteria. For the poetic terms quiz, he yelled at about ten people in class when they asked about the definitions expected and refused to give an example of what to put for the quiz. Then everyone failed.
In office hours, I felt uncomfortable, afraid to speak, and like I had no worth as a person. He insulted me, yelled at me for not listening, snapped at me, and told me that my interpretations from class that day (which were given with evidence) were wrong. All I did was ask him to clarify on what his handwriting said.
He needs to understand that poetry can have more than one right answer. He will literally tell every single person in the class that they are wrong and then say "this is what this poet was ACTUALLY trying to say" as if we are all the dumbest people alive. Then, two seconds later he will yell at the class for not participating more.
English207 with Penna was interesting, yet definitely difficult & sometimes frustrating! Comment that he looks for an absurdly specific "right answer" about poetry is definitely right. REALLY hard grader on papers, takes attendance daily & participation matters. If you're looking for an easy, or even fair English requirement try Cotsell!
Definitely need to keep up with this class everyday. Read the textbook, post discussions every week & 2 big group projects done entirely online. He uses a weird grading scale so it's impossible to get an A on anything. You pretty much teach yourself the material by reading the textbook.
He is one of the most ignorant people I have ever had the misfortune of being in the same room as. He will ask you your opinion about something and then berate you in front of the entire class if your opinion is not the same as his. Everything about his class is unclear- grading criteria, assignments, class material. Whatever you do, don't take him
Honestly kind of a bully to his students, says some pretty uncalled for things. Class itself isnt hard you do a lot of useful things like create resumes cover letters etc but is the type to only grade well if you write exactly the way he wants but also isnt clear about what exactly he wants. Go to class
Worst online class I've ever taken. Makes the class almost impossible and only gives out C's.
the worst professor i've ever had in my life. for the love of God do not take him. you will regret every second of the semester. he's a pompous ass who only had negative things to say about projects you've spent hours on. NOPE
In the class many of my peers would give excellent responses and actually cared about the subjects. He would ignore or invalidate them and then later in class say that the correct opinion was something that was said earlier without acknowledging that it was already said. He is very intimidating, and doesnt support diverse perspectives/opinions.
DO NOT TAKE ANY CLASS WITH THIS PROFESSOR. Penna is by far the WORST professor I have ever had the displeasure of studying under. Regardless of the quality of your work, this man hands out Cs like hes crippin. Elitist who has no regard for you or your work. Save yourself the anxiety and take this course with literally any other professor.
Never sign up for one of this professor's classes if you don't have to. He floods you with work, is unreachable for extra help in anyway, does not teach at all, just uses readings to "teach". He's a ridiculously tough grader, giving most students a B- simply for grammatical errors. Doesn't deserve to be a professor
Take any other professor.... He assigns an insane amount of work and no matter how much effort i put in i dont get a good grade. he's an extremely tough grader and very hard on his students for no reason.
i'm an english student, + i've never been good at math, + i enjoyed my math class more than this course. lectures are painful. when a student comes up w an opinion, the response is "ok, but" or "well" + smacking the opinion down. advice + emails condescending. very tough grader + has 4 grades for whole course. piles of reading. class miserable.
Almost impossible to get an A. No matter how hard you try, he'll never be satisfied. Never really teaches you anything. He just expects that once you read the readings you'll know what to do. And it's a lot of reading and pointless discussions on Canvas. Group projects are a pain since people don't do their part. Avoid him at all cost!
Chris Penna to define my tenure with him wasn't the best, he has a good understanding of his studies but the problem lays with his class format. He gave out a midterm , a paper and quoted "final or paper". He also comes off rude sometimes and doesn't anything to improve class engagement. Boring and I'd take another professor
Dr. Penna has a great understanding of different works when it comes to poetry, novels, and more. There was a midterm, project, paper, discussion posts, and choice of paper or final for assignments. He was always available for help or questions. He is a tough grader, however it was to challenge your thinking. Attendance was mandatory.
Might be Benjamin Franklin?
Christopher Penna comes off as a kind and interesting man that has a love for poetry which all may be true. Regardless of this he treats his students poorly and seems like he wants people to do poorly. Other professors in the English Department at UD have also had many poor things to say about his teaching style, specifically his testing.
Please avoid. Extremely unclear "rubrics" on all assignments. Organization is imperative for async courses & he does an awful job. Tough grader for no reason (this is just a 2nd writing requirement). Appears "nice" but does not care about students' learning. Heavy group project work which doesn't make sense since it's async? Avoid avoid avoid avoid
I think Dr. Penna has a lot of good things to say about poetry, but he can be hard to follow. There wasn't much direction in his lessons, and he would often go into tangents that took up a majority of the class period. He is a very tough grader, but he does allow for revisions, so if you meet with him independently it really bumps your grade up.
Canvas is a complete mess Grading system is a complete mess Ambiguous feedback Repetitive readings Tough grader Course content is useful, but is overshadowed by Penna's inability to teach and COMPLETE lack of organization on canvas.
Penna is obviously an intelligent guy who is very skilled in his craft. That said, he's very condescending toward his students, and has a knack for making them feel dumb when they raise their hands to contribute toward a discussion. Not a very nice or understanding guy. Wants everyone in the room to know how smart he is.
Penna is smart, but a pompous a-hole. When you try to participate or come up with a thought on your own, 9 times out of 10 he'll tell you that your opinion is wrong to a point where I stopped participating in class because it didn't feel worth my energy. the amount of reading is obscene, there are only like 4 grades, and the midterm is brutal.
classes are boring, homework is repetitive, and will give you vague comments on papers (I got a B- on one and all he said was "Good"). he treats the class like its a 400 level one and wastes class time arguing why his interpretation of poems is the only correct one. i was so excited for this class, but this was a waste of money.
lots of reading and attendance is mandatory. not too many papers but when we were assigned one, they were difficult and he is a difficult grader. class wasn't too boring to sit through and sometimes the discussions were interesting. you have to put in the work to receive a good grade in the class.
Ok teacher, read a lot of tough material in this class and feels he expects you to understand it right away. Heavy readings for each class. Expects students to participate in class in discussions on the readings but is very condescending when you say something he doesn't agree with, made me feel stupid a few times. No study guides for exams
Avoid this professor if possible. He's a tough grader who provides unclear feedback and organization. Though the course content is useful, it's overshadowed by his poor teaching methods. unstuck ai may help with study prep.
Harsh grader
Asynch class but he makes multiple deadlines and assignments weekly that you have to keep up with or you will receive a 0. Tough grader, I don't think it's ever possible to receive an A on the assignment even when you follow the rubric perfectly. The only useful part of this class was making resumes and cover letters
another horrible english professor at ud. his class makes zero sense and u cant figure out anything that he is doing like his instructions and grading he wants us to fail
Nice guy and good at responding to emails but this class was so difficult for no reason. Doesn't give out A's and doesn't really explain why. VERY tough grader. Discussion posts weekly and writing assignments. If you have any other option I would recommend a different professor. Also group report that takes whole semester and was very difficult.
Follow the rubrics exactly and submit every assignment on time and you will still end the class with a B!
