Pretty good teacher
He was horrible!!! I didn't learn anything in his class. Avoid taking him!!
His class is never boring but it is difficult. There is a lot of work and he's not very clear in what he says he wants for assignments so you better make friends in the class.
He's really hot but he's crazy lol. If you're sensitive and get your feelings hurt easily, then this is NOT the class for you! He WILL pick on you at least one lol.. Make sure you master MLA format or you will fail lol! Other then that, he's fun to look at.. ENJOY!
He is young and arrogant and has no interest in 'teaching". He only wants to show off what he knows and he expects everyone to be the expert he thinks he is. His class is definitely a challenge. A lot of people are saying he is cocky but I enjoyed his personality, I thought it was very light and humorous. MLA is very, very important in his class. If he doesn't help you understand it then talk to someone in class who is an "MLA expert". Do it! Also, read your stories and start your research/essays early!
He gets sidetracked and starts talking about himself, so by the end of class you do not have a clear idea of what you are supposed to do and spend the majority of your time emailing him to ask questions and get one sentenced unclear answers.
He spends the majority of the class talking, and easily gets sidetracked with personal stories. He does have a fun personality, but I personally found the he did not answer my questions. Even when I emailed him I received one sentence responses. His assignments are easy once you get him to fully explain them. Not a class to take lightly.
Take this class! u wont regret it. All you have to do is READ your stories & HAVE a perfect MLA. He uses "Football" to help you understand his class.
if you do not master MLA you will fail. i did learn alot about research, but if english isnt your thing i wouldnt recommend it. he was very clearn on assignments and what is required and organzied

This professor is strange really strange. You will pass the class if you do the work. But if you are looking to have a professor teach you something worth while, without cluttering the air with stories about himself and his friends, then I urge you to find another. professor. Good Luck! Can't say you weren't warned.
Everything you have read about this professor is true. I only wish I would have checked him on this site before taking the class. Professor Pumphrey is a foolish instructor that should never be given a title of Professor. I don't care how many letters are after his last name. He needs many lessons on interpersonal skills
Yes, he talks a lot and he knows it yet he doesn't stop because he thinks he's helping us i guess. He doesn't usually let you leave early even though he could considering his whole lesson and assignment could have been explained in 2hrs. He helped me learn how to do research papers but that's pretty much it for now.
Grade's MLA Format extremely hard, but once you get that down, you're good to go. Pay attention when he actually lectures, which is not long or often. Easy Midterms and Finals.
Confusing at first. Once you understand the structure he wants for your papers, just follow it to the letter. Uses textbooks for reference, but mostly pulls from his own material. Not recommended if you don't have patience and can't take the occasional teasing during class. Makes a lot of football references.
I would not recommend this professor to anyone. He is young and arrogant. If you ask a question there is a possibility he will humiliate you in front of the class. He was not a helpful professor.

I wrote this professor an email asking for help and he was completely unwilling. Very arrogant, talks a lot about irrelevant subjects, very unclear with assignments, rude, useless to students who are asking for help and clarity with assignments.
Honestly, if you are not a slacker it is not a hard class. He won't hand you your grade like some professors. He is a little cocky, but hey.. he is nice to look at. Read your stories and know your MLA.
Taking his online class- at first I thought I missread his rude response to an e-mail question. But no, he is consistantly rude and unclear, then expects perfection(his way). That said I am learning to write research papers well- just wish I didn't need to spend 40hrs a week doing it.
he was a great teacher. i took him durng the summer for express classes. really good professor. ya there is a lot of work, but you have to be motivated to do your work. he is not that helpul. you usually have to learn the assignment on your own because he constantly talks about himself. alot of work. if your lazy, don't take his class.
He Is a humorous professor but his teaching methods are not so great, very unclear, does not like you to email if you have a question, and you only write to essays toward the end of the semester, which I dont know how that Is helpful in perfecting your MLA. I would not take this teacher ever again in anything.
Two things: know MLA and read The Packet. Have writing with a thesis, forget the bedford handbook. Pump is a great teacher for getting the skeleton of an essay together - otherwise is crap. His essay style is just so you understand the importance of what goes into an essay. Great personality, eh professionally, but he will explain anything needed.
DO NOT take his class. He is a cool teacher but the way he grade is unfair. He grades as if you are an expert. He will take 30 points off if you miss one comma. A lot of students had to withdraw because they were failing. One mistake can lower your grade drastically. Luckily I got to stay.
His class is very hard online. Waits until the end of the week to grade papers, which stinks when you want to know feedback before moving on to the next assignment. I do not recommend his class online. Very harsh at grading! He does not care about his students. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS! He is not clear on assignments and how he wants you to do them.
He is very hard! Not clear at all on his assignments. He uses football as reference, which I have no knowledge in. His grading scale is very harsh as well. Could care less if you pass or fail.

He's a pretty cool teacher, BUT don't take him unless you already know MLA format perfectly. He's stated many times that he expects perfection and he means it. -30 automatic for ANY mla mistakes. he doesn't have office hours, so I had to meet after class to talk to him and he was more personal than in class. NOT AN EASY TEACHER!!!!!!
My English is excellent, my writing skills are above par. This professor does not grade on your content, simply on your format. He states his requirements for each assignment but when additional information is requested he simply responds "reread the guidelines". Do not take him unless research is your future pathway!
You just have to make sure you do the work. Its pretty easy but there's a lot of writing. but easy writing.
Be sure to use his preferred writing style. Always meet minimum length requirements and pay attention in class.
Where do I start. Do not go into this class thinking there is space for error. English has very little to do with the course. Very hard to get an A on an assignment. Graded on format NOT context.. He's funny but he definately shouldn't be an English professor! Make sure you have enough time & patience to devote to this course.
Avoid this class at all costs. His entire grading is based on execution (not content) which is difficult because his instructions are incredibly vague. He's a very arrogant man and is not helpful with questions. He also takes too long to grade outlines so you're forced to write an essay without knowing how you're doing. Awful instructor.
This is the worst professor I've had at PBSC. He is very arrogant and is more interested in making sure you are aware that he had his method of teaching copyrighted than what he should be actually teaching. He isn't helpful at all and makes you feel stupid all the time and I'm far from stupid. I had to withdraw and waste my tuition.
I took this class spring of 2013, He is a very confusing professor, he is not clear on assignments AT ALL. He expects you to know MLA format inside and out before taking his class and doesn't teach you anything about it. I passed his class with a B but i will not be taking him for ENC1102. He is very self centered and not a good english 1 professor

AVOID AT ALL COSTS! I went in to PBSC loving English and due to this professor I lost all interest. Does not properly explain things and cannot help a student to save his life. Poor excuse for a professor.
I wish I knew about this website before choosing my classes. Pumphrey's assignments are confusing as all hell. He will post an assignment and explain the steps in the wrong order. He will also give you a 0 on a paper if you make a few mistakes. I am currently in the process of trying to transfer to a new professor.
This was by far THE WORST professor I have ever encountered. His class was NOTHING like 1101 is supposed to be like, which is where you explore different styles of writing. His class was all about the mla format, copying his examples-to the "T". His papers were research papers. He was very sarcastic, not helpful when asking him a question.
Not helpful at all, every assignment has something to do with football which most of the time do not make sense he is rude and extremely tough on grading any incorrect MLA formatting is 30 points off which means most of the time you do not get a passing grade. If you miss one class you will be completely lost. DO NOT RECOMMEND him

I HATE this professor. He is not helpful and his class is extremely difficult. I am taking it as senior in high school, and he is not understanding WHATSOEVER to the fact that I cannot turn in his assignments by 12:30 in the afternoon. He is NO help. Do NOT take his class. I regret it SO BADLY.

As long as you follow the Syllabus guidelines you will do well. He has a specific way he wants things done and is very clear about that. MLA has no margin for error. Very helpful when you e-mail him, as long as you follow his correspondence guidelines. A lot of writing but it is very helpful in learning how to research and write in MLA format.
Pumphrey is super rad and funny. Really loved his wit and character. Besides from his personality, his assignments are very clear and doable. Learned SO much about proper writing techniques. I am a much better writer because of him. Also, he really does care! Just make sure to show up to class and do all the writing assignments and you are golden!
I took him online. He would almost every week assign us these videos to download and watch and I always had problems with watching them. Whenever I tried talking to him about it he would answer really late (one time past the due date when I messaged 3 days before) and said "it's not universally." He's harsh at grading and gives mostly 0 feedback.
He's an extremely hard grader. I didn't put a comma, my only mistake, and got 70100. He didn't make an assignment available (due to "technical issues") and we only had 3 days to do it, he only extended the deadline for a day. He doesn't care about the content of the essay, (which sucks if you put a lot of effort in to it) only if it's perfect MLA.
Professor Pumphrey's ENC1102 class was impeccable. Every assignment was a closer step to becoming a better writer. I took this class twice after getting an F in the spring. I learned way more from this class than my other ENC1102 professor. He's a very tough grader. Huge MLA fan. Do your readings. 3 easy essays. he's clear on what he wants.
I took this class as a dual enrollment student and it was not bad at all. Just 3 essays and he will give you the grade you deserve.
Honestly, he was the worst teacher I ever had. He is a tough grader ,but he doesn't explain anything to you and he also is not very helpful at all. The assignments he gave were horrible and I don't even know why he is a teacher. Point blank don't ever take him.
Took him for my ENC1101 lab. Mandatory to take with my ENC110 It was a 50 min. class. We did the same thing every week. Brought in one piece of writing to get peer reviewed and took a independentdependent clause quiz. Half of your grade is from your online work, super easy. Received an A.
If you want a professor that will plug every ridiculous copyrighted concept he had during his "graduate school work" (trust me, he makes a point to mention this), has quite possibly the most unclear directions for each assignment, is a ridiculous grader, and has plenty of grammatical mistakes of his own throughout his course, then go for Pumphrey!
Professor Pumphrey is interesting. He's a cool guy, kind of weird though. It was a 50 minute lab class, sometimes he let us leave 20 minutes earlier (yes, a 30 min class!). Very easy class, easy A, easy lab homework, easy quiz. Just don't be late, it pisses him off.
I've never taken a course with someone who wrote their own book before, but I would definitely NOT recommend it. His book is everywhere and very unclear, not to mention the entire class revolves around his book. His 5 Part Method, is not explained very well, nor does it make sense all the time.
I regret taking this class. Because I misplaced a comma I got a C on the whole paper. He's super crazy about MLA format it's ridiculous and he's even crazy about the way you email him. He said I had to follow "guidelines" just to ask a simple question. Avoid his class.

Uses a textbook he wrote which is full of stories about himself and football so it is very difficult to read. Pop quizzes almost every class. Failed alot of these quizzes in the beginning. Three essays but one missed comma can drop you to a b. Got two b's and an A on the essays. I think he just gives you a grade based on what he thinks you deserve.

For starters this professor is beyond unclear with what is expected on assignments. Writing/English is my strong suit & I've never received a poor grade in either subject except for his class. It doesn't matter if you try your hardest & put in effort he will grade you unfairly & will blame any error on his end as a "glitch" or "tech" issue.
I love writing essays but when I took this class it was a step by step writing structure in Pumphrey's way. He is a tough grader when it comes to essays. He also didn't answer questions clearly. Would not recommend you to take his class. I got an A in English 101 but in this class got a D. All he cares and talks about is football.

Pumphrey used his own textbook which was great news and saved me $200. i was already a good writer but his class gave me a new perspective on writing and i find it easier than my old outlining method. he was very helpful in helping with the papers we had to write. If you just do things the way he teaches you will pass. Very interesting dude.
Pumphrey's class is entertaining so attending is not a burden but he's a tough grader.. only 3 essays to write though
Too specific with his own philosophy's. His concepts of writing are made entirely by him, if you miss 1 detail, you risk failing; as in 50% off an assignment for a minor mistake. Takes too long to review assignments; doesn't give detailed feedback. Perhaps in person he is a better teacher; would seek another professor with a better grasp of reality
Gets a bad rep for his Comp classes. He's a pretty solid LIT professor. Very tough grader when it comes to grammar, punctuation and following the rubric. Funny in his lectures and will work with you to become a better reader/writer. Gives extra credit if the class works hard and shows up. DO NOT TAKE IF YOU'RE REALLY LAZY.
Pumphrey is very clear with what he wants to see in essays and colloquiums, and he gives good examples to help you with it. You will receive an A if you show up to class, ALWAYS USE MLA FORMAT, and get your 3 essays reviewed for errors before turning in, and do colloquiums. I would recommend it, nice guy. Happy i took his class.
Would not recommend. toughest grader I have ever seen. Needs to have some sympathy for students. Expects perfection on every assignment. Tests insanely hard. Not clear on due dates or what he wants. 10/10 would NOT recommend.
I have taken Pumphrey for ENC1102 & LIT1000 (B&A). He is an extremely tough grader, he takes English very seriously and he wants things done a specific way. There is no "easy" way around his class. You have to work for your grade. You learn so much from him and he's truly a comedian. Love him!!
Took him in Spring '17 and will take him again in Fall. Great professor and very knowledgeable. If you like to be challenged and learn new materials- take him! Give extra credits ( pretty cool extra credits btw) and has a great sense of humor. ADVISE: read the instructions and make sure to follow. Meet with him if you're struggling - he will help!
I don't think I've ever had a worse professor in my life. He is extremely difficult to understand and does everything almost as a joke. He never clearly explained anything and in cases like that where you could reference the textbook, he also wrote his own textbook which we have to use. Tough grader and doesn't offer help either. Don't take him.
Although a little intimadating at first, he is a great professor. Pumphrey's book (he's the author) made writing SO MUCH easier. He even throws a little humor/sarcasm to make it more engaging. He's a tough grader, but as long as you keep a positive mindset, show up for class, and do all the assignments, he will really help you be a better writer!!

Pumphrey is very tough on grading and does not really care if you fail or pass. I once wrote a paper that exceeded his 2 page limit and wrote 3 pages because I was passionate about the topic and he marked my grade down half a grade! He doesn't give instructions properly and wont give you good feed back. Don't take!!!
If your afraid of the camera or using audio, do not take his class. He requires camera while test taking, recordings of your self for the discussions. Im camera shy so this class was not a fit for me.
I have taken two classes with Pumphrey and I enjoyed it. The structure of how he teaches is different but since I liked it wasn't as difficult the first time around. I am going to be taking another class of Pumphrey since I like his classes.
Do yourself a favor do not take this man. Ive never met a more unprofessional professor. I was early admission student taking his class and hed always condescend me and mockingly call me a high schooler. Ended up having to withdraw his class and thanks to him couldnt do early admission. He uses his own form of a textbook too. Totally strange.
By far one of the worst professors out there. There are plenty of other great professors at Palm Beach State that arent condescending like this man.
I took his online lit1000 class. I have taken MUCH harder courses, but somehow this one is the hardest class to pass. He is very confusing in his lessons and does not care if you understand or not. He makes everything much more complicated then it needs to be. A low level class should not ruin your gpa.

Professor Pumphrey is passionate about writing and literature. The assignments were unique and creative and made the class much more enjoyable. He is specific with how essays should be written and provides examples that walk you through the writing process. This class was a marvelous experience and I highly recommend him.

Professor Pumphrey is an excellent teacher. He is able to bring in current situations to describe different literary critiques and makes the class fun.
I have now taken two different classes by Pumphrey and I can say he is great. The work and his expectations are clearly outlined for the classes . Make sure you have your materials for class because you will need them .
Great professor! Gives examples of papers exactly how he wants them to be done. Show up to class, he is entertaining and explains assignments in person. Wants you to get a good grade.
Awesome Professor! He's amazing when it comes to trying to find common group on topics. He tries to let you pick your own topics, so you can write about things that interest you. He's some of the few that care for your education.

hes got the weirdest essay format ever, its oddly specific to the point where it's unnecesary. hes a tough grader as well, while he tells you this stuff it is true its such hyperspecific information it is very easy to lost track of. he isnt the best with email either and he responds like 2 days after.
THIS GUY SUCKSSSSS!!!! So many stupid instructions you get lost on the assignment. Also he makes you do ridiculous work like dubsmash and audio recordings. Specific about grading your work and if its not PERFECT he takes a lot of points off. STAY FAR AWAY!
As for personality, I REALLY liked him. Very witty. I enjoyed picking out my own readings from the textbook it kept me interested. Least effective was the description of the due dates halfway through the course there were alternative due dates and I lost point, see my grade? He is a tough grader and slow to respond through email and with grading.
What professor in their right mind gives assignments AFTER THE FINAL EXAM??? Final to me means OVER not keep working on more essays. This guy is a stickler for preciseness so be aware when it comes to grading!
Pumphrey was an amazing teacher that made things simple to understand and he gives examples And rules of every assignment to make things easy. I recommend him because hes not any other professor that makes you read or watch movies and write a essay. He lets you pick your topic interest which was amazing.
Mr. Pumphrey was a pleasure to work with. His class often referenced sports. Sports are not my thing but I know he did that to keep it interesting. He wrote his own textbook to make the class fun. There was some incorrect information given but it was always easy to get it cleared up through course mail. I thought the class was easy. Would reccomend
Professor Pumphrey used his own textbook, which was insightful and told us exactly how to structure our essay's setups, proofs, and extensions. He was very helpful and saved me textbook money. Very much appreciate, would take again!
TAKE THS CLASS IF YOU'RE NOT GOOD AT ENGLISH! He will give you some fresh methods to write essays- and they could work for you if nothing has in the past. If you know how to write a good essay and have no issues with grammar, then I don't recommend this class. It will seem dumbed down, and he's very annoying and childish when he lectures.
Mr. Pumphrey has absolutely impossible standards. If you are working full time during this pandemic don't take him! in fact don't ever take him. Stuff is due on one date in the grade book but he actually wants it on this other day. On top of it if you don't submit it on his magically made up day he'll deduct 25 points. He is condescending as well.
Do NOT and I can not stress this enough DO NOT take this class! It's a task within itself just to send this guy an email. Very unclear with due dates. Says one thing on my grades and another in announcements. It's ridiculous.

The hardest thing about this class was 1). Attempting to contact professor Pumphrey and 2). Understanding his scattered and confusing instructions. The class itself was pretty easy to get an A+ in as long as you take the time to read his grading criteria. Weeks would pass before receiving grades and feedback for assignments. I don't recommend.
He's hilarious and can be very laid back. He's extremely educated in what he teaches but can be confusing about assignments-- you just have to clarify during class. He uses his own textbook which is honestly my holy grail for writing papers. He truly wants you to succeed and enjoy writing papers by realizing how simple they can be.
I give it a meh. Easy to pass. One positive is that he lets you choose what youd like to read/study and write about. One negative was that he takes foreverrrr to grade stuff.
His book is awful, why was he allowed to use a book he wrote (conflict of interest). He does not respond to your questions., if he does he is very condescending. If you arent good at English comprehension DO NOT TAKE HIM.
I don't know why this guy gets a bad wrap. Yes, the assignments can be strenuous at times due to his high expectations, but once you understand what he expects from you it is a good class. The main things to know are "The 12 S" which must be followed on assignments and communication with Pumphrey. Also, knowledge of MLA format is important.

None of his instructions or explanations make an sense, and god forbid you tried to reach out for a clearer explanation or advice before a project is due he will send the same pasive-aggressive message to just re read the instructions or call tech support. How would YOU like a professor who speaks in riddles, refuses to explain anything, and spends way more time trying to seem cool and relatable then actually engaging with students? If thats your dream professor then take a class from him. If youre a sane person however, dont touch it with a 10 foot pole.

I understand why most people dont like Pumphrey, but I took two of his classes in my first semesters and I can easily say that his content will help you throughout college. There isnt a single time that I struggled with writing assignments in my four years of school, all thanks to him.

please don't take this class. it is painful to sit through, literal definition of a boomer who is completely out of touch with the next generation. I don't skip classes ever but I hated his class so much I just didn't show up sometimes because it physically hurt to sit through his class.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. He is condescending and awful, just a mean person. I took a withdrawl because i couldnt stand him. he shouldnt have this job.
Professor Pumphrey was savvier online than your average professor. Has a cool personality on top of the reading material. Like Jenga for literature. He promoted discussions where I personally felt like I discovered new things from engaging students. That's a plus. His emphasis on colloquium is a turning point for college readiness.
Terrible professor, he does not respond to any of your emails and barely explains the coursework in detail. He tries WAY TOO HARD to be hip with the new generation and it comes off as cringey. He cusses a lot and its off putting
He is strict about emails(12 guidelines) and considers wearing tank tops unprofessional. It's FL, and this isn't high school. He wouldn't count ppl having their articles if they weren't printed. Ppl had them via links and it's ZOOM. The book has cringe cartoons from someone who ignores that Jefferson had slaves (Sally Hemings). Good Luck.
Not a fan of public speaking? This isn't the class for you. You'll present your summary of the articles you have chosen. Cursing he's not afraid of, so be ready. On quiz day just follow the formatting he provides to write a quick draft he just glances at and sends you on your way. He grades it once it's officially due on canvas. Tough grader.
This professor is unprofessional and lacks punctuality that he expects from his students. He doesn't provide helpful criticism or feedback along with taking weeks or even months to grade assignments and respond to emails. Take a different professor and actually responds and care about his students.
I understand that it's college and late work is mostly not permittable but isn't a death in the family a valid excuse? Well apparently not to this professor. He is not understanding at all and on top of that, he is not willing to respond to emails in a timely manner.
Pumphery is about half as intelligent as he thinks he is, and about a quarter as funny. He obviously cares for academia, and his talks on proper sourcing and paper layout absolutely have merit. But it's all marred by a terrible personality. He is more interested in his class laughing at poorly put together anecdotes than in actually teaching.
This professor has very specific criteria for grading that is NOT clearly communicated. Instructions for assignments are convoluted and in various places. His feedback is vague and unhelpful. His responses to emails were consistently rude and dismissive. 0/10. Absolutely, under NO circumstances would I willingly deal with this professor again.

Despised the way that this professor had his own textbook for common interest of failing his students. He is basically Gollum or Guilderoy Lockfart from PBSC. Making us do more homework even after the final exam has been provided, causing my grade to get lower than what it was. Never responded to my emails and also did not provide feedback.
The worst professor you could ever take. The way he grades is absurd. He always goes off topic and he curses so much. You will not learn nothing at all he makes his own workbook
This professor was a bit tedious with how assignments are submitted or due, but there's good feedback and accessible communication. Provides examples for essays, drafts, and final drafts. As long as you follow his instructions and stay on top of your work, it's an easy class to pass. Definitely would take another one of his courses.
I took the 6 week summer course. We did nothing but listen to his tangents the first 4 weeks. With 2 weeks left, he had us write the 3 essays we had left using his design, so instead of writing a normal essay he has you do unnecessary, tedious work that confuses more than helps. Don't take his class, also inappropriate, idk how he's still teaching
Spends more time making the entire class insanely uncomfortable with his inappropriate jokes and unnecessary rambles instead of communicating assignment expectations. Everything had to be printed or it's a 0 even if it's done, regardless of the fact that it costs $10 to go to get it printed because not everyone owns a printer.
Do not take this professor if you want someone to respond to your questions and provide clear feedback as well as not caring he doesn't care about the students at all I recommend taking another professor instead!

For me it was a really good professor. The reason of why I don't give him a five is because he has a pretty strong personality that can collide with those who struggle with anxiety. Apart from that, he gives good assignments and feedback. I like the way he graded and the lectures. I feel like I got more skilled in my writing after his class.
He has a very straightforward curriculum. However it requires a lot of attention because he will dock your points for small details. He's horrible to respond to emails. Turned in grades late and gave me the wrong grade and unfortunately had to retake his class. Don't waste your time with him. He's definitely a last choice professor. Avoid him.
Very obviously an intelligent man with a knack for writing! However this does not mean good teacher. His instructions and study guides are bloated with silly anecdotes and a performative wit that immediately detracts clarity. Instructions are also spread out forcing you to decipher what he truly means. He is very pedantic and not helpful at all!
So this professor was very confusing with every assignment he gave, the instructions were NOT clear at all and he would grade you horribly if you misunderstood. Oh, and when you would reach out for help to him, he would be sassy and generally rude to you and not helpful. He also would assign readings and homework that were behind a paywall..
This professor was unhelpful and confusing. He used made-up terms and demanded a rigid essay format that didn't reflect real college writing. Even when you followed his exact structure, he still graded harshly for not meeting his vague expectations. Very frustrating experience.
He gets a bad rep but his class was solid. I knew getting into his class that there were going to be some hardships but it (surprisingly) wasn't. He grades everything thoroughly which means the assignments require some effort. He uses the 12s for everything which is just standard mla writing, nothing too bad. Plus, he gave a lot of extra credit.
