He seems to know what he's talking about, however he is somewhat dull in the manner he teaches; which is too bad because its an interesting class. All in all though he is a good prof, and super hot!

Very good prof. Made MBIO seem simple. Points out what will be on the exam and what won't and emphasizes examinable material to the max. Hard class to learn, but definatly easier because of him. I was terrified because I didn't know all the bacteria genus and species names, but you only had to know the very common ones and it wasn't worth alot.

A hard prof but the way he instructs makes everything easy. Notes/handouts are well organized and exams are directly from the notes so you know what to study. No need for a textbook. Clear explanations are given in detail with care, he genuinely wants his students to do well. Definitely the best prof I've had, extremely intelligent, & so hottt.

I took this course distance ed, which made it really hard! He's a really good marker, pretty easy. Final exam was really hard, but somehow I got an A on the course. I thinked he bumped up our grades, so I love him for that!! And he's super hot!!! Didn't know what he looked like before the final, so I was so distracted during the exam! Great prof!

Yes, the man is VERY good looking, but he's more than that. His explanations in class are crystal clear. He's friendly and will go out of his way to help his students. Really, you only have yourself to blame if you do poorly in his classes.

Best prof I've ever had hands down! I took MBIO 1010 in the summer, and it was amazing. He taught both the lecture and the lab section. He explains things in ways that you can understand, and clarifies concepts if necessary. He made me want to do a degree in Microbiology!

Dr. R is a good prof! I was not looking forward to taking a Microbio course, and now he has me excited about it and getting my family tired of my “Did you know...” ‘s. When you ask him a question (either in person or by email) he explains the answer very well! This is a huge treat. All his exams are multiple choice.

Chris is a good instructor but when you ask him a question, he asks you the same question and likes to stumble you and his quizzes are not testing knowledge but rather word by word memorization. Lectures consist of him asking students questions to get the juices flowing in the head but it gets annoying.

Chris, is a good prof. But, he is tough on exams and finals. Also, his lab exams tend to get tricky.

Chris is an amazing proff. For comparison had Dr. Sparling for my introductory course and got a B+ but in this course I got an A+. He asks questions during lectures to help you learn the most important aspects of the material. IT helps keep u engaged. He also is helping and willing to answer your questions about anything. Extremely likable guy.

Although I have only seen this professor on his profile picture on D2L and once in person during the final exam, I can say that he did make the course quite enjoyable! He was quick to reply thoroughly on the student discussion to every little question. He really does care about his students doing well - whether it's online or in class!

First, Chris=Smokin' Hot. I took this class for a nursing prereq, & although the course can be a bit challenging, Chris is clear with explanations & what you can expect on exams. He posts all of his notes online, & gives you practice exams before each exam. He seems like such a nice guy, & very helpful. You do not need the textbook for this course.

Honestly, like this is the best looking prof I've ever seen, literally you can't look at him or have a conversation with him without smiling at his beautiful face. He dresses nice, too. The lab is challenging, but he is very helpful and does his best to help you understand.

Exams are hard - especially the multiple select sections. However, he is by far the hottest prof I've ever seen, oh my.

I just feel that he purposely made the exam really hard. Some of the topics were easy enough, but he always finds a way to make it harder during exam. His exam questions are made to trick students! You gotta put alot of work to get an A. The lab exam was hard, way harder than biochem2 lab exam!!!

I found this course super easy. What's on the notes will be what you see on exams. I got 94 on first exam and 97 on second exam. My final is on thursday so I wouldn't know about the finals but I highly recommend him rather than another lady prof who teaches MBIO

Very interesting course and the lectures given established all the criteria needed for the exams, no need for a textbook. This course isn't easy (for me it was) but it isn't hard either, it all depends on your interest level and how much effort you're willing to put in. Overall, he's a great prof and it's a plus that he's good to look at.

AWESOME PROF! Loved his lectures. The hardest thing about this class were the exams! He loves to use All of the above or 2 of the above in the same question. If you know the class material you will do just fine and everything on the exams are from the notes..... No Surprises . There is a lot of stuff to memorize for the final though. GOOD LUCK!

Took this online, 2 midterms (online, all MC) and one final (cumulative, all MC). Has very clear instructions on what is expected. Lots of content (25 chapters) but very interesting. Posts a final study guide that is very helpful. Easy A if you put in the bit of work it requires. He is very helpful if you ever email him for help. Great class & prof

Had him for past 3 years as a lab coordinator, good prof, but as always hard and tricky exams. ALWAYS asks questions that no one knows answers to, you will notice that when taking third year courses with him.

He's a really great prof, tests are tricky but as long as you read you'll be fine, his lectures are really great and he adds in a lot of information and examples to help you understand better. Oh and it may help that he's the best looking prof on campus!

His lectures are AMAZING! He gives extra tidbits of information to his lectures so attend them. He also asks questions along the way and often will tell you what is going/not going to be on the exams and what you should focus on. The exams are a little tricky so BEWARE. Understand the material and read through his slides and the book. Very helpful!

ONE OF THE BEST PROFS IVE EVER HAD. took micro in the summer, very excited going into it, was not disappointed. Really became interested in micro and now considering 2 major in it. Really learned so much from this guy, even cool stuff outside the course outline. Good looking+ great at explaining even difficult materials, as long as u ask whn u can!

Although He is a good lecturer and explains most concepts clearly, his exams are though. Some questions on the midterms and finals are wordy and hard to understand. Labs are fun and the concepts are interesting.

Had him as lab coordinator for MBIO 1,2,3 and Microbial Communities. Overall one of my favourite profs at the uofm, but every prof has their ups and downs. He's very friendly and his explanations are very clear. However, his lab exams can be very tricky. IF you want a good grade, DO THE QUESTIONS IN THE LAB MANUAL, can't stress this enough!!!

I took him for my MBIO 1220 class and he was AMAZING! I learned so much in his lectures and he gives real life examples which is really convenient if you want to remember a lot of information. Very funny and active in class and also asks questions to see who's paying attention. I'm now majoring in Microbiology because of him. Super Awesome!! :)

He taught me 2020 because I took it in the summer but he was also my lab instructor for MBIO1010, MBIO2020, MBIO3280. He is a great guy, very approachable, he does make exams/lab exams harder than necessary.

Chris is by far the best professor I've had at the U of M. He really cares about his students and is always willing to help them outside of class. His exams require critical thinking rather than route memorization. They are by no means Difficult, as long as you thoroughly understand the experiments.

Absolutely love Dr. Rathgeber. Very passionate about microbiology, knows a lot about his subject. He rarely even has notes to go off of, he just glances at his slide and knows what to say. Tries to engage the class, is very funny, and gives great explanations. Go to class, because he's cool, and gives little tidbits that aren't in the notes.

had MBIO 1010 2020 3280 3030 with him. He is very approachable and helpful! I was not a top student. hmmmm, to be honest, I actually got lowest grade for my lab final exam once (I think?) but he still tried to inspire me, and would not treat students differently based on their grades. without him, I don't think I can graduate successfully .

The labs were great; exciting and fun. Tests fair. Use the manual and especially info form each lab that he posts on UMLearn. Other than it takes a while to get marks back, I enjoyed the labs. You can tell that Dr. Rathgeber put a lot of effort into them.

One of the best profs I've had. Expands on slides thoroughly so you'd rarely be lost. Exams are tricky but fair you just have to really apply the information given in the slides to the question & make sure to study the pictures on the slide as well. He also takes the time to explain certain things & they're usually on exam. DO NOT NEED TEXTBOOK.

I would suggest taking the distance ed course of MBIO 1220 with Prof Rathgeber but only with him! Though it took lots of note-taking, copying and reading from the textbook, it's worth it if you have him because he's super organized and easily accessible if you have any questions.

I hear taking micro online requires a lot more study time, as you're studying the text for answers, rather than slides. I put in many hours a week, but by the end, I felt I really grasped the information on account of it. Chris was available by email and video chat, and responded quickly to questions.

Great prof, Lot's of information to know. Prior exam he breaks down what you must know and what you can let slide- to a point. Beware of some trick questions, otherwise very straight forward. Online course, he was easy to get a ahold of for comments or questions. Easy to understand to material.

Obviously passionate about what he does and teaching his students about microbiology. He really cares about his students and how they do in his class. Truly makes a difference.

Distance course had weekly quizzes but were helpful so you won't fall behind. 2 midterms, 1 final. He was very caring and responded fast to emails. His unit instructions are very clear and he doesn't try to trick you. You can use an 8th ed of the textbook which can be found online for free. Would love to have him as an in person prof.

Dr. Rathgeber was the light of my life for the 6 weeks I took his spring session course. He very clearly cares not only about the success of his students academically, but also about their mental health and ability to succeed in other ways. He made every possible effort to make this course accessible. The material was easy enough if you study.

Professor Rathgeber provided well-spoken and straight-forward lectures and often connected them to previous topics that have already been covered. The assessments were solely based on the topics covered in lecture so there were no surprises. He was kind and answered many of his student's questions. Had him as a professor for the lab component of MBIO 1010. He is super responsive to his email, and you can tell he really cares about the wellbeing of his students! He is great at teaching and is concise, always leading you in the right direction but never outright telling you the answer cause he wants you to learn. Tough but he's great.

Distance-ed so it was self taught, but yet he is accessible and the note outlines he provides really help A LOT. Because you write your own notes, you learn during the process. Open book tests, quizzes & exams, so with already understanding the material from reading the textbook, you don't have to memorize where the answers are in your notes.

I didn't take a class with him but he was my lab instructor for MBIO 1010. He is very approachable and respectful. He doesn't make his students feel inferior and he'll explain until you understand and can do it on your own. He taught me how to properly streak an agar plate. His video guides are extremely helpful. Best prof I have seen. Had him for 1010. His little subtle 'dad' humour is the best thing in the class. There are pre-labs a midterm and a final, all very easy. Just need to memorize the lab meal like any other lab course but here the lab meal are so clear u hardly need to spend time memorizing stuff.

Had him for lab. H e was great as usual. But I feel like he made this course more complicated than 1010. The labs were easy but there were so many group assignments. Also the lab had no midterm only a final. It was an easy final lab exam for sure but he was definitely harsh correcting it. I was expecting a 90% but ended up with a 70% (others too).

I took MBIO 1010 with Chris this summer, and it was the best. If you have the chance to have him as the lecturer, take it with him. He is very accessible, caring and will stay however long it takes after class or in his office hours to help you out. One of few genuinely caring professors. THE GOAT
