This class is not it. He knows the material well but isn't the best at explaining it if you don't immediately understand it. He also does not do any example problems in class so the first time you do practice is one the problem sets and puts lots of information in one lecture to the point you can't keep up.
Got a B+ in 410; didn't enjoy it but it was fine. This class is 5x harder than 410. 420 with Roark is an L any way you look at it. He is a brilliant and super nice professor but he explains everything in the most complex ways possible. Lecture is not helpful. Exams are insanely long and hard. Each mc q has multiple answers and he gives no partial c
Roark is a great prof but hold on for dear life cause if you get lost in this class it's very hard to catch up.
"I just kept flipping, and the test just kept going." _ my classmate after the last midterm
His lectures are basically useless. He uses the strangest notation and uses complex terminology to explain stuff. The material is hard and he just makes it harder. HW takes a long time to complete. Midterms are so long
He's fr a genuinely great, great person. His lectures are super dense so it's easy to fall behind. If you just rewatch every lecture, you'll understand the material (I got an 80 from doing this and reviewing HW). He doesn't have practice problems which makes teaching yourself super difficult. HWs are hard, but dont let the other reviews scare you.
He really cares about his students and gives us a lot of resources (ULAs, TAs, practice exams, etc), but he goes over SO much content during class and honestly it was much easier to rely on the internet or khan academy to study rather than go through the lecture slides. I usually have no idea how to do the homework. extremely hard class.
prof def knows a lot and is a very smart guy but his lectures are extremely dense, with slides often filled with mistakes, making the content just so dull and hard to engage in without extreme focus. material is conceptually hard but if you sit down with it you can grasp it. hard class no matter what. has high expectations.
Professor Roark is a decent professor and is very knowledgable about economics. He also actually cares about the class and will get back to you if you reach out with concerns. In the flip side, his lectures are extremely dense and sometimes unclear. The tests are very hard with the un-curved average being around a D-.
If you struggled with 410 and are hoping to have a better time with Macro, you're in for a rude awakening. This class makes Econ 410 seem like 6th grade algebra. It's do-able with a VERY significant amount of time and effort but expect it to be the hardest class you've taken in your life. Roark is ok but sometimes hard to follow and a harsh grader
*FOR 425* Roark is very knowledgeable and has passion. That said, this class was the hardest Ive taken at unc. Psets take hours (get ready for confusing questions), lectures are so dense, and tests are very challenging. He is a tough grader that doesnt award a lot of partial credit. Final was insane and nothing like the homeworks. Good luck.
Prof. Roark is a really cool guy and extremely knowledgable. The content for this course is intense. Part of it is heavy on the math and the other is very dense conceptual work. Simple mistakes are easy to make and he makes plenty. Lecture slides, homework questions, and answer keys always have something wrong. He desperately needs an iPad.
The hardest class I've taken in my five semesters at Carolina. The other reviews say it... lectures are so incredibly dense. Exam averages are awful, but they get a handsome curve. Roark has another ECON class that I will likely be taking, but I wouldn't strongly suggest him. The MC grading system is bad, often multiple answers w/o him stating it.
*425* Dr. Roark is very nice, but damn this class was brutal. Each lecture is 30 slides of dense material so if you don't understand something initially, it's almost impossible to catch back up. Homeworks took hours to finish and ended up being nothing like the tests, which were somehow even more difficult. My hardest class at UNC by far.
I learned from this class by rewatching his lectures. His lectures and homework are full of mistakes. It's the kind of mistake that confuse students. He also said the wrong things in class multiple times. For example, "Demand curve moves leftward...I mean rightward." MULTIPLE TIMES. It was a very frustrating experience.
Chris is without a doubt the most intelligent person I have ever met, every time I spoke to him it felt like I was being injected with knowledge. Content wasn't too bad, studied for a couple hours before the tests and managed to get an A. Definitely an easy A if you go to class.
Roark is simply the man. He always pulled up to class in the dopest fits and made every lecture exciting. I honestly don't get all of the negativity on this page, the class isn't that bad and C-Breezy (yes we are on a nickname basis) is always there to answer questions outside of class.
Dr. Roark is great! Lectures fast-paced (don't take notes on slides b/c they're posted). Office hours essential to understand PS content. Exams are a time crunch. Most intimidating aspect was complicated notation and derivatives he threw at us initially, but we were his first group at UNC and he had a misconception of our calculus fundamentals.
One time Roark got mad for people talking and said "I can throw this on the hw/exam without teaching it" and a student said "you already do that" and I've never heard something more accurate. Always had an attitude and the teaching was not there. Hw took HOURS and exams were rlly hard and long. He did curve the class (bc ppl did bad bc no teaching)
Pros: Nice guy, test curves were big. Cons: Homeworks took incredibly long to complete, tests were long and very difficult, lectures were fast with lots of information, used weird, confusing notation, he made numerous mistakes during lectures and practice problems. Got an A, but the class was by no means easy as I've seen other reviews indicate.
*ECON 425* Nice guy, very knowledgeable but sometimes to the extent he makes things seem more complicated than they are. The problem sets are difficult and lengthy, but very helpful in reviewing for the midterm and final. He did curve the midterm and final course averages. Though the class was challenging, I learned a lot and would take it again.
Just show up and you'll be fine. Can't imagine anyone getting below an B+ in this class. One of the easiest courses taught in Econ/UNC in general
Dr. Roark is clearly very smart & kind, but he struggled with lectures and often made mistakes that he didn't correct. The ULAs were the ones who taught a ton of us. 101 and 410 were a breeze for me, but I never knew what was going on in this class. Avg. curved exam grades were in the 70s, so raw scores were often failing. The final was a disaster.
Def thought 410 and 101 were difficult but not NEARLY as difficult as this class. He was bound to have mistakes on every single thing he put out to the class and the whole "MCQ can have multiple answers but if you choose one wrong, then the entire question is wrong" was BS. I respect all my professors, but the ULAs were the backbone to this class.
All the good reviews on here have to be from the VERY few ppl (i'm talking like at most 6 ppl) that enjoyed his class and MAYBE got higher than a B on the exams. Being completely honest- from someone who has taken all the notoriously hard classes here at UNC and passed with A's, the structure/grading/prof of this class is astonishingly ridiculous.
Roark wanted people to do well in his class but he just wasn't a good professor. He often made errors in class and on answer keys for homework and practice problems. Be prepared to spend hours working on homework assignments and studying for exams. The only good thing about this class is that he curves the exams because everyone does so poorly.
If it's not obvious the 5 star reviews are trolls, this is the hardest class I've taken at UNC by far. Roark is a nice guy but he seemed to make a lot of mistakes in his lectures and just overall didn't prepare us very well for the exams; I ended up teaching myself everything and scored well only because of his very generous curves.
Really nice guy but the class is hard af. I didn't really study much and still got a B because of the massive curve. (Failed the final and one of the midterms and still got a B.
He's a really nice guy, but ECON 420 is just ridiculously hard. It is by far the most difficult course I've taken at UNC. It makes ECON 410 look easy. The test are extremely hard and almost impossible to study for, but they are curved significantly and the final grades are curved in addition to that.
Roark was an all around terrible professor. Lecture material was impossibly hard and on top of that he was awful at conveying the information. Homeworks took 8+ hours to complete and know one I knew ever got better than a 70 on them. Kind of class that makes you want to switch majors. Seriously, take class at a community college to avoid Roark
I'm a neuroscience and econ double major and this is the hardest class I've taken at UNC. Prof is awful. Seems to make the class impossibly hard for no reason. One time Roark quoted "I make the home works and exams super hard so you have to struggle through them which helps you learn." Not a super nice guy either; passive aggressive, snarky, etc.
I took 425 with him and Roark is one of the better Econ professors I've had at UNC. His lectures are long and often not too engaging so it is easy to tune him out but the structure of the class is fair and the content is interesting. His exams are fair and the homework takes a really long time and are tough but really prepare you for the exam.
He was a nice guy, but his teaching was not the best. The material of the class is challenging but it is stuff that you will actually use in the future. Lecture slides are not super descriptive so you have to pay attention in the class. Tests and homeworks are lengthy and challenging.
He's better than some of the other econ professors and I think he is still finding his footing at UNC but I wish he would be better about returning grades and releasing assignments on a timely manner/sticking to dates he gives himself. Class is much harder than expected and some lectures overcomplicate textbook subjects, but unfortunately it's life
I sometimes laugh during class because he can be funny but I often cry outside of class because of his lectures and assignments and exams.
I've never had a professor so accessible while at UNC so points for that!! I wont bs this is a really hard class lol but it could be a lot harder...dr Roark does a great job at simplifying concepts during lectures and is always ready to answer questions/listen to feedback to adapt how he's teaching the concept. Don't be scared to take the class
This class is just really tough. As someone who got As in Econ 410 and 400 without working that hard, this class really pushed my limits. Roark is overall doing his best with a massive class and hard material. He does really care about wanting all of his students to do well. Go to office hours, get ready to study, and you will be okay. Curves a lot
His explanation of concepts and the lecture slides are difficult to follow and on occasion do not fully elaborate topics being covered. His tests occasionally, without warning, involve more complex math than he teaches. Granted, he makes an effort to answer questions and presents in a friendly and engaging way. Gotta self study to pass 420.
Roark is a very nice guy and has been one of the most accessible professors outside of class I've ever had. The material is tough, but if you attend every lecture and take notes on what he says instead of copying the slides it's not that bad. Homeworks are tough but you can collaborate and he answers questions on campuswire. Gives curves on exams.
This class by no means easy. Our first exam was given a 15-point curve this semester, but the second exam was given a 4-point curve because of how the C. Breezy likes to curve the mean of the exams (or sometimes the median) to a 75. The grading scale makes the class passable, but the exams are tough, and the homeworks collaboration.
Chris is the man. The content is hard and sometimes I blame him for making it overcomplicated, but overall hes such a genuinely good guy with a great sense of humor. I'll miss his presence in the classroom. Also he makes up for the difficulty of the class with a great curve so I have no complaints.
Chris genuinely cares about us and he's the most accessible prof I've had so far at UNC. His personality makes even macro bearable to learn He's a really good prof but the material is still pretty hard you have to spend a fair amount of time out of class to get a good understanding My one complaint is the exams are DAMN hard. Very painful. Very.
just took the final and oh my god. Last semester reviews were right that the final will kill you. His personality is the only reason I'm giving him a nice review because that final was not very nice.
Roark is a good professor and a very reasonable person. He uses Campuswire extensively and will answer messages and questions very quickly online, which is helpful when completing the (very difficult) homeworks or studying for the exams. The lectures can move fast, but you can always ask clarifying questions later.
Chill dude but moves a bit fast and skips steps in examples, though outside of class he's super accessible and gives great explanations. Main concern was that most of his MC questions have 2 right answers and you have to get both for full credit, and one answer is usually far more convoluted than the other. He's the only prof I've seen do this.
Professor Roark is a very nice and funny guy who has the bad fortune of teaching a very difficult class. Though I feel that he occasionally struggled to explain concepts in class, he is accessible outside of class and easy to ask for help. Above all, I feel that he wants his students to succeed.
You can tell that Chris genuinely cares about the success of his students and I haven't felt this seen by a professor before but I really WISH he would change his multiple choice rule. Some MC questions have multiple answers but you can't get half credit if you get one right and one wrong and it is so absurd
Genuinely the best econ prof. I've ever had, I cannot write a review that does him justice. He's insanely nice, funny, and accessible, and is the first prof. I've had that has actually made sense regarding the material. 8 problem sets (2 lowest are dropped), 2 midterms, and a final. I would literally take every class with him if I could!
Great guy, one of my favorite professors in the econ department. The content in 425 is interesting although sometimes lectures can get boring and seem overcomplicated. Really straight forward grader though, and the work load is super manageable. Only downside is how long it takes for things to be graded. Overall loved Roark though, nicest guy.
Honestly, the material itself isn't that hard, but they he teaches it makes it much harder. There were moments where the same info was presented differently during the semester, which seriously confused me on the final. Prof Roark is a decent lecturer, however, I would recommend looking for alternatives for this credit if you want a good grade.
The course itself has difficult concepts but as a professor, he is really great and understanding. He always wants to make sure we understand the material which is nice. His HW was harder than the exams.
Makes the class way harder than it needs to be. Homeworks are overly complicated and take hours to complete. Constantly makes mistakes in lectures and on answer keys. Can be hard to follow at times during lectures. Also will round some students grades up and not others. Nice guy besides all that though.
Excellent professor, knowledgeable and caring. The class is simply the hardest I have ever taken. Roark does his best to bring the material to the students. He is funny and wants to cut everyone a break, but at the end of the day it is still Intermediate Macro.
This classes' topics build on each other throughout the semester. If you get lost in the first units then the remainder will be more difficult to grasp. Roark cares about seeing you succeed, the class is just difficult for most people. Make sure that if you don't understand something that you take the time to get help or figure it out.
Roark is a good professor, and he really does care about his students. Very reasonable grading policies and problem sets, but the class is really hard (especially if you have no experience with the stock market/finance industry). Great guy, difficult class.
Good guy. Course Material is tough and he was a fairly new professor when I took the class. You can tell he continues to grow and learn the more he teaches the material. ULAs were helpful. Was accommodating and held office hours for assignments. Generous curve at the end of the semester, so don't panic.
Nice Guy. That being said, on test reviews and during tests there is stuff that wasn't really in the lecture. He tests for a complete understanding of the material. But, homework is not like this. He doesn't teach the understanding of the concepts well. Tests are harder than the reviews and problem sets by a good margin which is hard to study for.
Roark is a genuinely nice guy and cares a lot. I'll be honest though, his natural teaching abilities are pretty horrid. He has extreme difficulties explaining simple concepts, and most of the time comes off as condescending/sarcastic when he isn't even trying to. He makes this class more difficult than it needs to be but that's the whole department
Roark is the saving grace of UNCs econ department and one of few professor I look forward to taking again. He is good at explaining concepts although he can sometimes make things more complex than they need to be. He is extremely helpful and responsive via email/office hours/campus wire and genuinely wants students to do well. Also pretty funny.
He's a great professor who clearly knows his stuff. He's very funny, very accessible, and kind to everyone. The class is by no means easy, but he offers a generous curve. The workload is relatively light, but it is in your best interest to study throughout the semester.
He's a caring prof and explains things pretty clearly. The material can be challenging and confusing, but he's always willing to help. The exams can be difficult, and sometimes there are problems that feel unfairly difficult (i.e. we never did such difficult problems in homework), but if everyone does poorly, he curves, so don't stress.
For Econ 420 you should review the slides and all relevant practice problems (he gives past problem sets and exams for review prior to each test). Additionally the textbook is helpful if you are confused on a topic and need a more in depth explanation, however he does not completely follow the textbook and to excel in the course it is not required.
Roark is nice, but class is Hard with a capital H. Go to office hours to compare PS and USE CAMPUSWIRE! He answers so fast basically texting him. Multiple choice grading system SUCKSSSS. Never got above a 33% on an MC section. 54 on first midterm, and ~70% on the others, still ended with a B. Big overall curve. Good luck econ majors stay strong.
I second the wholesome sentiment and enjoyed generous curves, but too many mistakes on in-class examples and problem sets for me to feel Roark is an authority. Just teach yourself the content from more thorough sources and hope the content transfers. Encouraging "game theory" on multiple choice is also goofy.
The second half of this semester is more difficult than the first half, but still doable. I unfortunately was sick for three weeks and fell behind in all my classes. There are plenty of practice resources. He tries his best to help you but the class is just too big for only one professor. The ULAs are your best resources.
Prof. Roark genuinely wants you to do good. He assigns weekly problem sets + there are 2 midterms and a final. You need a very holistic understanding of the material to do good on his exams. If you utilize practice questions, past papers and attend class, you'll do fine. He also answers every Campuswire question he gets, and curves generously.
Roark cares a lot about his students and has been restructuring his class to make it as fair and manageable as possible. His exams are hard and you will have to study a LOT, but if you have this expectation going into it, you will be okay. Definitely utilize campuswire and your ULA's. Don't fall behind and ask him questions, he wants to help.
Roark is a great guy and a great professor. 420 is hard, but it's clear that he really wants all of his students to succeed. He's super funny and accessible. Just make sure you study a lot for exams and do as many practice problems as you can. You don't really need the textbook because his powerpoints are pretty comprehensive.
Dr. Roark is a little scatterbrained and his lectures move quickly. Yet, he's a great person who cares about his teaching. Homeworks are difficult, yet the tests are relatively easy (he even admits that). He's accessible at office hours which helps. Just work in groups on assignments and he gives a lot of practice problems that help for exams.
So far best pf in econ department
He's a definitely qualified professor as in he knows what he's talking about conceptually, but the way he formats and words his slides can give you a massive headache. You'll also have to read through some grammatical errors that can sometimes make learning the material more frustrating.
Professor Roark is a solid professor who I think has gotten a lot better considering the reviews for him the past few semesters. He is a bit all over the place at times and his problem sets can be very tricky and graded a bit harshly. However he makes up for it with the midterms being a lot easier and straightforward (which he himself admits).
Overall he is a great professor, but sometimes the way he explained was really confusing. I have 17 credits this semester but i spent nearly all my free time with this course. it's hard to get an A, but A- is easy because you got it when overall grade was 86
I don't know if he personally understand what he was talking about. Going to office hour will just make you more confused. He was inconsistent with what he said, which is the key why so many people though this class was hard.
I've taken 3 courses with Roark (420, 425, 525/493) and he's a good professor. He gives engaging lectures, though sometimes confusing, and he's very personable. He designed a good curriculum for this class that reinforced concepts from 425 and built new skills, such as research and programming. Overall, this is an interesting and useful course.
I found this class to be comparable to 410, its a lot of material that econ majors need to know to succeed. Roark does his best to give lectures and problem sets designed to teach more than we will be tested on so we have the best chance of success. Roark is funny, engaging, and intelligent, I enjoyed his lectures, and found office hours useful.
Super smart guy, not the best professor. Can be rude sometimes when you ask questions but he still likes when people engage in lecture. If you are afraid of taking this class like I was, don't be. Dr. Roark curves GENEROUSLY on exams. My best advice would be to complete entire problem sets in TA/ULA office hours!!!
Roark genuinely cares about his students and wants to see them succeed, he gives helpful and quick responses on Campuswire, all of his exam questions pull from concepts you will have seen on a real/practice problem set, which have useful answers and grading criteria. TA's also give helpful feedback for psets, go to office hours and ask questions!
Prof Roark does a decent job of explaining things but could be a lot more concise and clear in his explanations. Problem sets were easy enough and tests were very fair and closely resembled problem sets and practice exams.
Professor Roark is great. I was really struggling in this course and was failing for first 12 weeks, ended up finishing with a C+. Roark assured me that as long as I did my best, I would pass the class. Very nice professor who wants the best for his students!
Dr. Roark is my favorite professor in the econ department. He is super accessible outside of class, curves generously, and his exams reflect the in-class practice problems and homework sets. It is also clear he really cares about his students, and I found him to be generally pretty funny. He made class engaging and worthwhile.
Chris is a great guy, really cares about all his students and their success. Macro was very tough for me, not as easy to conceptualize as micro. I made a 42 on the first exam and finished with a B-. If you put in the work, you can easily make an A.
His lectures are really bad. The slides aren't easy to follow on your own, he moves way too fast, and then will randomly ramble about nothing for 5 minutes. It's honestly easier to just not pay attention in class and try to figure out the homework on your own, vs trying to use what you learned from his lectures to do the homework.
Roark is an awesome guy, hard to get close to him in a 200 person class, but he's super easy to talk to and is funny/down to earth. Tests aren't too difficult compared to content, averages were in the B range. ECON aid center is super helpful.
I'm a micro person, so class was kinda hard but not too bad. Lectures weren't helpful, too fast, not recorded, didn't really explain things well. STILL don't know half of my HW grades. Roark was kinda condescending and tried to be relatable but it was just a bit weird. Seems like a fine guy, but teaching style didn't work for me
He has to curve the class by 10-20 points at the end of the semester because everyone performs so poorly. Homeworks are insanely hard and lectures are comprised of bullet point slides that are extremely hard to follow. I recommend just ignoring anything in lecture and teaching yourself. The overall quality of this class is horrendous.
Genuinely the worst professor I have ever had. And not a good person either
Good guy and it's obvious he tries, but his lecture slides are genuinely the worst slides I have ever seen in my entire life. They are border-line indecipherable and are rarely helpful for studying. If you're unlucky enough to miss a lecture, you might as well just not try to understand the material you missed because the slides won't help at all.
I kid you not I've had to copy-paste his slides into ChatGPT with the prompt "Reword to be more clear and easier to understand" at least a hundred times.
Get ready for Mr. Grumpy.-and by that the most entertaining and quirky professor you'll ever have. Can't believe this guy is so polarizing, his lectures are straight comedy.
Very nice and funny guy but something about his teaching style just didn't click with me. I often left class feeling even more confused. Answers questions but, again, answers just didn't usually click, which is dangerous in a class like 420 where the material is hard to wrap your head around. EconAid Center was also unhelpful, unfortunately.
Overall lectures are confusing, problem sets only minimally help solidify concepts taught in lectures, and his responses to questions on campuswire are often vague. Chill guy but not great at helping to understand material which is already difficult. Takes up time trying to be funny at least once every lecture but speeds through difficult concepts.
Don't really get the other reviews. I sat on my phone pretty much every day and learned through the slides and homework. Wound up with mid 90s on just about everything. I thought he was entertaining and was able to communicate well. His slides and other resources (i.e. previous hws) were everything I needed. Generally don't do well in econ either.
Roark got upset with our lecture for not being enthusiastic enough (mind you - it was during a semester when many students' families were suffering in W. North Carolina). Tests were pretty hard and it took months for homework grades to be returned so you couldn't really use those to study. He lets you drop a couple hw grades though
I loved this class! Learned a lot and he really cares about students. Lenient with deadlines and just wanted us to participate. Not easy exams, but to be expected in upper level Econ.
Roark really cares about students engaging with and learning the material. He is very accessible and wants to help. The investment project is super fun and a grade booster. The tests are as to be expected, but if you can do the problem sets then you will be fine, utilize the practice sets. Don't get the textbook it wasn't necessary.
Difficult exams with a final worth 35% of your grade. The slides are incomprehensible sometimes and Roark would often make mistakes whether it be the answer keys, slide information, or hw question wording. He seems to know what he's talking about but has difficulty relaying the info. He can be extremely passive aggressive when answering questions.
I think he gets way too much hate tbh. Had him for 420, and I think the content in that class is just not intuitive hence the ratings... but he was awesome for 425! Super active on CampusWire and made a 3:30 class bearable. While he does make a lot of /mistakes, he's pretty chill about correcting them and willing to help clarify anything confusing.
Roark is a chill guy, he's pretty understanding and fair when it comes to grading, this course is just hard to perform well in for a lot of students. Make sure to do practice problem sets/exams before tests and you should be fine. Go to office hours and go to class!
I loved this class and I love Chris, had him for 420 as well and that was much harder for me since it was a lot less intuitive. Graded by 6 homeworks (1dropped, 1 for completion), a midterm, final, and an easy prospectus project.
didnt like his teaching methods, his "multiple choice" grading is the worst I've ever seen and the lectures and slideshows don't help that much without added notes and teachings on top of it. didn't enjoy the class at all but I managed to pass it, will not retake with roark ever again.
Didn't curve any tests when I had him. Awful wording on HW and test questions. MC system is the worst I have ever seen. Very passive aggressive and will not hesistate to humiliate you in front of the whole class for things you didn't even do.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS! If you need to take this class, take it over the summer with literally anyone else.
Really kind, cares about his job and his students. It is a hard class, as all econ classes at UNC are, but Roark does a great job being available for students and is always patient and respectful.
This class is not as difficult as people make it seem. It is a lot of work, but it is manageable, and tests are curved if people struggle.
Really hard class, but not impossible. Roark cares about his students, he can get frustrated when people are not understanding concepts, but this is fair since his office hours are usually pretty empty...if you are struggling go get help!!! The econ aid center almost always has someone to help with 420.
Funny how as soon as a 1/5 rating appears, it's followed by at least two 5/5s to inflate the overall rating. If it's not obvious enough, those 5/5s are from trolls, or the few people who actually liked this class. Pros: Responds to CampusWire questions quickly Cons: Arrogant, terrible grading system, near useless lectures, mistakes EVERYWHERE
grading scale isn't terrible like some other Econ courses, decent guy just comes across as odd sometimes. never went to office hours but am currently passing with an ok grade so not the worst class just do the practice exams he gives they're almost identical to the actual ones. also relearn algebra tricks because its heavy on the exams sometimes.
It is a difficult class, but Roark and the ULAs and TAs want to help you pass and do well. Just use the practice material, and you will do fine.
Ngl I think people give him 1 just because they screwed up their exams. Overall a nice and approachable guy with some humor. Helps are available on campuswire and Econ aid center.
I think some of these reviews, while containing valid criticisms, are a bit harsh. Yeah, he does make a decent amount of mistakes, but he's pretty flexible with deadlines and shifts them around to account for errors on his end. The curve is pretty generous as well, and I personally didn't find this course as taxing as 410. Also a personable dude.
He is a super personable professor. Really cares about student learning and wants us to succeed. The curve (already in the syllabus) is really generous. Its a hard class but the practice exams he gave were super similar to the actual exams, a lot of it is a matter of reasoning through a problem which was fun
Would give 0/5 if I could. Bad lectures, confusing MC questions with the worst grading system for them ever, passive-aggressive, unhelpful TAs and office hours, need I say more? If you have any reason to take this class, take it with another prof if possible. You will save both your GPA and your life.
Dr. Roark's lectures are a little messy and hard to follow and his multiple choice grading is frustrating. But macro is just not intuitive, and I think that's why 420 is so challenging. His curve is generous though, and he is accessible outside of class in office hours and on CampusWire. He answers questions well in class.
Professor Roark is the best! He really cares about his students' learning and success– don't be afraid of this class if you take it with him. It's also curved so much and he posts a lot of practice tests and past exams. Super funny.
Dr. Roark is a fun professor and an overall good guy. Highly recommend going to office hours regularly (Roark or TA/ULA) to discuss homework questions and exam review material, as 420 can be unintuitive sometimes. Class is curved generously so that the median is a B+. Biweekly assignments + textbook readings not required ⇒ relatively light workload
Was a sleeper class. Not that much work, just study problem sets before exams.
Many self-contradictory points on the slides...
Very disorganized class, no clear grading expectations, and very passive aggresive with students. Thinks he's funny (he's not). The class itself is an amalgamation of idiosyncratic economic teaching that is not found anywhere but his lecture hall, so good luck studying outside of class. However, curve is forgiving. Overall just a "meh" class.
IM WRITING THIS AS IM STUDYING FOR MY FINAL EXAM. PLS DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE WITH HIM. Chris is a chill person and hes funny but his lectures are SO UNORGANIZED. I actually studied so hard for the midterm but the materials he gave were super confusing and I got a B. Compared to Chris Handy and MSA, this class was x100000 more unorganized.
he does a good job of making a bad class ok. he wants everyone to succeed and came to our office hours despite being sick.
The only people who liked this class are the ones who do not care about their grades. I actually had a stroke trying to understand all the contradictory points in the materials.
Prof. Roark can be a little bit disorganized and confusing at times, but he is a super nice guy whose humor is often misunderstood. If you are engaged in this class and ask questions when things become unclear you will succeed. Definitely not an easy class, but there is no reason to avoid Roark when signing up. Making friends in class will help.
This guy is a total beast. Very generous with curves and willing to answer any question. Very available to students and honestly just an expert at macro. Don't know why I got on the final but very easy to do well if you put in some effort
Roark is a super nice guy and very helpful. Only gripe is that he spent a lot of time on topics which weren't tested at times which meant some important concepts (like fed policy) were rushed. Overall the exams are difficult but doable. You have to be proactive and address uncertainties early or you will fall behind.
Slides, problem wording, and grading criteria were super confusing.
Roark is an expert in this field and I enjoyed this more than 420! I'm in QFE so I'll be taking 525 with him next semester too. Exams are hard and there is only one midterm. He drops one problem set and the last one is graded for completion. Group investment project which is a grade booster but also annoying to deal with if you have bad groupmates.
Dr. Roark is a great person; he cares about his students, and it shows throughout his class. However, his lectures are heavily based on the theory of Macro, and he does not explain much of the math behind the theory. The exams are difficult, but his grading scale makes the class easy to pass. Be prepared to teach yourself some of the concepts.
Roark is a caring professor and the goat grading-wise, but I'm not sure I love his teaching style. He's clearly a macro expert. However, during lectures he often skipped math steps or implicit assumptions about the concepts he was teaching, which made it difficult to follow. I had to become an EconAid warrior and teach myself some concepts.
I did not enjoy 420 with Dr. Roark. Lectures are quite boring and there are plenty of mistakes on his slides. We also did't solve a lot of practice questions and mostly focused on theories. Midterms 1 and 2 were fine, but the final exam was extremely difficult and tanked my grade. Homework grading is quite harsh as well.
I generally liked Roark. The structure of the class was logical, and content built so by the end I still remembered early stuff for the final. It's not a super easy class, but I preferred it to 410 and thought it was a little more intuitive. Lots of graphs, and some math like derivatives and iffy algebra. I did feel like it got harder throughout.
