Not a nice man, very standoffish and unapproachable. Class discussion counted for largest part of the participation mark, but he did not create a safe environment for discussion. Very rude when students are incorrect, even called one student an "idiot" in class. Not a fan, hope I never see his face again
One of the best professors I've ever had! Very helpful and approachable. Even though he asks a lot from you, you'll learn a lot from the assignments. Also really fair in its grading. Classes are a lot of fun and his lessons are linked to current affairs.
Great professor! Keeps lectures interesting and clear. He is really approachable and shows a lot of respect for his students. Course was a lot of work but really fun and interesting assignments.
Such an amazing prof, he wants you to succeed so he always allows students to come to his office and discuss their work. I have never had a prof that was willing to help me succeed. The lectures are interesting and the tests really require to apply knowledge not memorize it!
Decent amount of work for this class between readings, papers and tests. But theres no surprises and he's great to go to for extra help, be it for a paper or test he'll outline exactly what your asking. Don't fall behind and this class is a easy A.
Great Professor!!!!
Best prof I've ever had! I told him I had never taken any poli sci classes before and he helped me so much throughout the semester with assignments and such. He really wants all of his students to succeed! He also communicates the course material with enthusiasm so it's always easy to pay attention in class.
AMAZING professor. He is really helpful and interesting. He is also an extremely nice person. He always replies to emails and is very easily available for appointments. He gave us the opportunity to meet former PM Joe Clark and also Donna Kennedy-Glans. Class is hard (lots of readings) but IT'S WORTH IT. (He's also cool with international students)
Chris technically isn't a prof, but he is amazing, better than any actual Poli prof at the University of Calgary. He is a great lecturer, he wants you to participate, if you do he will remember you, guaranteed. If you need any help with assignments, go to him! He will outline exactly what he's looking for and it will save you.
An amazing prof. He met with each of us individually to help us along with our research essays. He genuinely cares about your success. If you have a chance take a class with this Prof.
Great proff, classes require a lot of reading.
He knows his stuff. He is very engaging, and wants to advice students as much as possible about the assignments and theories learned in class. In class, he uses TopHat which gives you a good outline of the material you need to know in order to pass. The class is a lot of work, but definitely worth taking! (Good for exchange students)
Very good professor. Ask for advice ahead of time regarding essays and you will do well. Marking is not easy but getting a good grade is very possible if you put in time and clarify expectations well ahead of due dates. Roberts is very good with making himself available for students.
Easily one of my favourite profs during my time at U of C. Roberts is unbelievably approachable and always makes himself available for students who want help. Not the easiest marker, but an A or A- is definitely achievable if you put the effort in. Uses TOPHAT and also gives hints on what will be on quizzes/final in lecture. Very beneficial to go.
Chris is a diamond in the rough- interesting blend of real life experience combined with a scary amount of knowledge! Will seemingly ask the impossible: 700 wrds on Canada's role in Development? But, he makes you prove to yourself that you ARE in fact capable! In a word he is brilliant. Fair, kind, and very helpful!
Great Prof-Knowledgeable, funny. He managed to make a class that involved Economics content (which is a snooze for me) interesting, dynamic and very interactive, I can actually say I learned valuable real-world knowledge from his class. A lot of readings, additional material and hard work required for the course which is to be expected.
Do not take this class if you have more than 3 courses! You will easily do two or three times the amount of work for this class, and the way he marks, coupled with a difficult grading scheme makes it unlikely you will get an A, or even an A-. The amount of work is ridiculous and your grades won't reflect all the extra effort. Stick to POLI371!
Roberts is the most caring, kind and honest professor I've had at U of C. He has on par expectations for a 4th year class. If you want to do well, make sure you visit him in office and he will go over exactly what he expects from you and how to achieve a great grade on your essay. Attendance is important to him so make sure you show up!
Took a summer course with Roberts, and don't want to take another with the same prof. Yes, he's nice, he cares, etc., but he has no concept of time management and he marks hard. There's stuff on his final (including essays) he hasn't taught in class. He also assumes his students have a lot of background knowledge on world history+economics. Avoid.
I had mostly no problems with him. His expectations are reasonable for a 300 level. I put in a subpar effort and still got a B, yet never took a poli-sci course prior. He can also be surprisingly forgiving. Didn't get through all the content, though, largely because of class discussion.
He can be nice but he can also be rude to students. He often tells students to stop talking and ignores them. Lectures are boring. Talks too much
Very vague. Often talks the whole class about things other than the lecture so it's hard to understand what he is trying to get across, or what you need to know for the midterm. Could benefit by providing clearer outlines regarding midterm content + more efficient ways to teach (different powerpoint style, posting notes before class vs after)
Roberts was rude, unprofessional, un-accomadating and generally a terrible professor. He uses TopHat for quizzes and participation (20% of course grade), never allowing enough time to actually complete the quiz which tanks grade. If you ask a question, he is rude and mocks students. Tests are okay. One small paper. He has a superiority complex.
Class was honestly really easy. Content was super interesting and prof. Roberts made lectures enjoyable. Never found him rude or condescending as others have pointed out on here.
Really great prof. Cares a lot about the students and is very respectful. There was a ton of reading for this class and the tests were straight out of the book. Gives good feedback on assignments. Loves to use tophat which were easy grades in my opinion. Would recommend!
Professor Roberts is super funny and personable, uses Tophat A LOT - he won't tell you in class when there is a top hat quiz, but he will put it at the end of the slides from the previous class. Lots of required reading for this course, if you use the online companion tool for the textbook to study you will do great on the tests.
Total gem, if you don't understand something GO TO OFFICE HOURS! While the class can sometimes be fast-paced, he is more than willing to sit down with you and make sure you understand a concept. You could tell that he wasn't that interested in the course towards the end, but was forgiving about readings and extensions. 10/10 would take again
Roberts delivers a great course. He appreciates class participation and is always willing to take time after lectures to discuss course information. His knowledge and passion is evident in his presentations. I would not hesitate to enroll in any course he offers in the future. Be prepared to read the textbook and you will have no problem.
He is highly knowledgable on the course content, however expects a lot of prior knowledge going into the class. Due to his extensive knowledge,he provides thorough feedback and help when confused. Marks assignments incredibly hard- the average for the first paper was a mid 60, yikes. Tests fair and while tophat sucks, it greatly boosted my mark
His essays are nearly brutal but his rubrics are very specific and thorough. If you try hard, it isn't hard to do well. He is very accessible outside class and very open to conversation. He taught this course well, his expectations were what I would expect from a senior POLI course. I am not a POLI major.
Lessons were sometimes confusing, so my method was to type out everything he said during lecture, and I did fine on all exams, all of which were pretty straightforward. He provides very clear expectations for the paper. Very approachable- don't be afraid to go into for office hours and go over the midterms, as it helped me a lot for the final.
Prof. Roberts is really great at keeping the class awake and Im never bored in his class. Although he does have top hat quizzes that you wont be able to pass unless you do the readings. All in all its super interesting class and I would recommend it to anyone that wants to learn about past and present events around the world
Hes a lovely guy. He was in the military so I can tell he gravitated towards that in lectures. He drones on and on sometimes though, it made me so bored. His tests are as hard as POLI tests usually are. Solid prof.
His lectures are confusing/messy especially when he doesn't upload slides on time. Doesn't cover material well enough for testing. When students talk he interrupts & talk back in a condescending way. Expects way too much for sub par teaching. One short paper. Final exam was brutal; 2 hours to do 4 sections where 2 of them are long written response
I've taken three courses with Professor Roberts and have kept going back because he is a gem of a prof! He knows his stuff and expects students to put some work in but a good grade is easily achievable if you put the effort in.
Good prof with great lecturing skills. Lecture's material will always show up on midterms and the final, including current events. Great class for a non-poli major. Do the readings if you want to do well. Tophat is easy marks - at worst guess and you'll still do well
His lectures seem like they are important however he lacks depth and substance and he doesn't give specific enough directions. Amount of work for the class is not manageable and is equivalent to two classes. He's a hard marker but the caliber of work he is expecting doesn't match the quality of his teaching. Overall a bad experience.
If I didn't really enjoy the content of this course I would have withdrawn. The lectures and slides don't make sense, important concepts aren't explained, and the amount of extra reading is ridiculous. I wish this class discussed more of the contemporary political situation of African states instead of theories (mostly economic) for 6 weeks.
Super cool dude, gives good feedback and advice on papers. Ready to help out all the confused first years. Interesting lectures that are a little difficult to take notes on, but if you read the textbook too it all makes sense. His class isn't that difficult to do well in if you actually do the work, which he makes clear in they way he grades.
Awesome teacher, gives very good feedback on paper and is very accessible outside of class. Would definitely take a class with him again.
Amazing professor! I always am excited to attend his class. Clear grading and content as well as engaging lectures.
Prof Roberts is a knowledgeable prof about Africa and political science. It is insane how much knowledge he has about an entire continent. He is very passionate about Africa, and wants his students to do well. He spends too much time on very specific facts and repeats his lecture slides. Waited for a paper mark for 2.5 weeks.
Dr. Roberts is an excellent professor. He is caring, knowledgeable and has great lectures. His unique class provides a fun element where you must become an expert on a country. I now know more about this country than Canada . This was my last class at the UofC and probably my favorite. Achieving a high grade is very doable by reading the textbook
This prof is great at presenting info in lectures; but, you need good notes as he will test you weekly and sometimes give pop quizzes. It's not an easy A, you got to work for it and be up to date on current events/news to do assignments. Reading the textbook is not good enough. Heavy need to understand how to apply the info in real case studies.
Great guy but not the best prof. Lectures are posted on d2l but they're very vague. Even if you go to his lectures, he goes off topic A LOT and doesnt really explain the concepts in depth for better understanding. PPT notes + textbook will help - BOTH is necessary. Tutorials & tophat are important. Review for midterm and final exams werent helpfu.
Overall a great prof- lots of emphasis on tutorials so if you miss those you might as well drop. Need to read the textbook to get above a C in the class but was overall pretty good and would recommend
Attendance isn't mandatory, the slides are all on d2l. But the lectures do help and they are well structured. There's a course housekeeping at the start of each class that makes you stay up to date of what to do. He has kind of a news anchor type of voice that makes it quite easy to hear and understand. It's not easy, but you can work for an A.
Went to all the lectures, did the readings and still had to drop this course because of the prof. He was often times vague and quite rude. His test questions are purposefully confusing. Not the type of prof you want in your first year.
Chris loves politics and his lectures show it. He is very knowledgable in the field. Heavy textbook and philosophy in this course so get ready to read and re-read chapters. He likes in class quizzes but tells you when they will happen. Tutorials are easy marks. Definitely recommend him!
He was a really nice prof. Made lectures interesting and not boring. Textbook was used a lot and making notes from it is suggested. Assignments were easy and he was clear about what he wanted. Tests were easy if you study. Always posts lectures online. Very easy to get a hold of outside of class. Unbiased which was great. Chill prof. Grade booster
Tophat quizzes are annoying and he often gets distracted in lectures and doesn't actually cover that much information. Tests are kinda hard, assignments are easy.
He is definitly one of those profs that expects you to be in class, and he uses online activities to double check you are there- but his lectures are useless. He uses name tags you have to bring to every class, he wont let you be part of discussion without these bloody name tags. His lectures have no value added, good luck my friends
Very organized prof. He explains content very clearly and gives regular mini-quizzes for you to check your understanding, so even though you didn't have to go to class I went anyway. Also a chunk of your grade comes from participation anyway. Go to class and keep up with the material every week and midterms will be easy and stress-free.
He is an amazing lecturer and very engaging/interesting however, his grading criteria is ridiculously vague. He is a very difficult marker especially for a summer course.
He expects that every student understands the materials and gets disappointed when half the class is unable to score full points on top hat- maybe thats because hes unable to successfully teach the material.
He spent the first 2 weeks doing NOTHING in class for the most part wasted 50 minutes for those 2 weeks. Then he lets things hit the fan and makes you read 2 chapters a week on top of other classes (prioritizing his class over others ofc). Test questions came from NARNIA or some magical land... Long story short go to Tutorials, READ THE TEXTBOOK
Solid prof. Very clear, and objective
Lectures are good but sometimes can get a little off topic. Not a particularly hard class but not keeping up with the readings can burn you pretty bad. The assignments are clear and not difficult.
One of the more interesting courses I've taken for both content and structure, being essentially a development studies course (through a political lense) divided into three parts (theory + history/thinkers/your own research). Chris Roberts was a fantastic lecturer and made the course a lot more interesting and dynamic when compared with others.
Prof. Roberts clearly cares about Political Science, and he is willing to direct you to resources to help you succeed. Definitely a solid choice, and the instructions for papers and what you need to study are crystal clear
I am trying to give a honest unbias opinion on the proffessor, please do not take a class with him. You will most likely skip class cause his lectures are boring, just go through the textbook and the slideshow, if you must take a class with him. His essays are marked quite hard and are not clearly given a criteria. He also stalls when emailing you
This was the only class I dropped in my entire university experience. Dr. Roberts's lectures averaged about three hours long, and were incredibly boring. The subject matter was complete non-sense, and the textbook he assigned was not even available at the book store. He is ideologically motivated too.
I really wouldn't recommend taking a class with this prof. He assigned WAY too much reading for a summer course. ZOOM meetings only twice a week, but they were incredibly long, boring, and didn't contain any information that actually helped you do better. Gives vague assignment instructions.
Being knowledgeable doesnt mean you can teach. Prof Roberts is immensely smart and I respect that, but this was one of the worst classes I have taken. You can work so hard but will only do mediocre at best. Two long papers, vague lectures, terrible marking criteria, and just not a fair class. Definitely check out some of his research instead.
I've taken a few classes with this prof and really enjoyed them. I found him to be very personable and friendly. Of course some lectures can be boring as with any course, but for the most part I found this prof super easy to listen to and remain engaged with (when lectures were in person....).
The amount of assignments, discussion posts, tophat surveys, & tests is overwhelming. He seems to forget that most students are also taking 4 other classes alongside his own. He marks hard and will take marks off for things he did not specify he wanted. Class was interesting and he's very smart, but I would never take his class again.
He's knowledgeable but can't teach well. Lectures are long and useless, you would do better studying off of the textbook. You can work extremely hard but still won't do very well because he marks so punitively. Tests feel like they are more testing your ability to memorize sentences out of the textbook than your ability to understand the content.
Prof. Roberts is extremely knowledgable and smart. However, he assigns an insane amount of readings (5 readings per week, plus textbook). He is really nice and is always fast at answering emails. We are required to do a LOT of assignments, some of which aren't clearly outlined or described, many students struggle knowing what to expect.
Course load is very heavy. Does not provide clear expectations for assignments (no rubrics/outlines). Cares more about grammer and style than the actual content of the work you hand in. Lectures are vague and useless. Discussion posts require a LOT of work but aren't worth much. Read the textbook and readings and you won't need to attend lecture.
If you have the ability to take whatever course you have with professor Roberts.... Do yourself a favour and find someone else to take the class with. Extremely smart guy, 100% should not be a professor.
Professor Roberts is extremely educated but that does not make him a good professor. He does not seem to care at all about student feedback, and he marks extremely hard- 1-2 mistakes on a large, multi-part assignment can give you a failing grade. He often does not provide marking criteria. If you take his class, memorize the textbook. All of it.
Lol, if you can take a class with literally anyone else do so. Online, at least, his classes are extremely difficult, he marks punitively, and if there is a way to make an assignment more difficult it will be constructed in that way.
Chris Roberts is an ok teacher depending on your learning style but that doesn't matter because he will not accommodate any student no matter what. He genuinely does not care about his students or their wellbeing and does not prioritize his classes as he expects the students to do. He acts as though his class is the only one you have.
if you have to take a course with roberts, do yourself a favour and find someone else. He is incredibly smart, but not suited to teaching. very tough market and assigns versioned/iterated assignments and gets your grades back 48 hours before the next part is due. this course literally destroyed my mental health.
I gave a 1 because the site forces me too, otherwise this professor would have gotten a negative numbers rating if possible. He is extremely rude answering to emails or questions; his lectures are very disorganized and unhelpful; and his amount of assignments and tough grading criteria makes me wonder if I'm an undergrad or a PhD candidate. AVOID!!
I was optimistic in taking a course with Roberts due to the split reviews of him on here, but overall his course has genuinely been my least favorite throughout my four years at U of C. His PowerPoints and lectures are all over the place, with extremely crowded and confusing slides. He also grades writing assignments extremely hard. Stay Clear
Hard marker, terrible feedback.
What really bothered me about Roberts is how he seems to forget his students are also taking other classes besides his. He just brings on the assignments and homework like there's no tomorrow. On top of that, he marks like a madman. If you need to take a class with him, be prepared to suffer. If not, avoid like the plague/COVID
His teaching style really fell off in quality after the online classes. He didnt allow a girl with a critical surgery to get an extension. His tests are overly difficult and theory heavy. Tough essay grader. Has destroyed my GPA by taking a class with him 3 times. Big mistake in my life. Not terrible teacher, uofc has far worse. But avoid if poss
I have had the complete opposite experience as some of these reviews saying Professor Roberts is not helpful and doesn't care about students. He is really quick at answering emails and will answer them with a lot of good information. His office hours are extremely helpful, he really cares that we do well and that we are understanding the content
Prof. Roberts is a very knowledge man & knows all the topics thoroughly. I understand he is trying to prepare students for more advanced courses, but during a pandemic where this is the first full semester online, I thought he would've been a bit more lenient. A lot of the material is brand new to students so it is difficult to begin with.
Professor Roberts is very passionate about International Relations and he makes a lot of the content in his class very engaging. His class is definitely not as easy A, however, if you follow his instructions verbatim on essays you will do well. It is very helpful to follow along with the readings in this course and try to pay attention in lecture.
Professor Roberts is very passionate about IR which makes his lectures quite engaging! If you follow the instructions verbatim on his assignments you will do well. Listening to lectures and doing the readings really helps to understand the content in his course.
Roberts is very knowledgeable and pretty nice, but his class is awful. I hear he is better with in-person classes. I never feel like Im learning anything during the lectures. In addition, lectures are just an outline for what is on the test, you have to go read and learn on your own the rest. He assigns weekly chapters with 100+ pages.
Roberts is knowledgeable. However, he falls short as a teacher, he cares little for frustration, problems and lacks basic academic respect for students. Ive had him a few times and he regularly fails to get marks back in a reasonable time. If you dont care about your grade this is a great class to learn, but a bad class for getting grades in.
The most stressful course I've taken so far at UofC. An unprecedented amount of reading. I had to push some other courses out of the way in order to make room for this one. If you do not read the textbook and the articles he posts, you will fail the exams. Way too much homework and way too long for feedback. Lectures were not needed to pass.
Professor Roberts is very knowledgeable. The main problem I had with his class is the amount of time he takes to give your grades back. Its very hard to get a good mark on part 2 of an assignment when you havent even gotten feedback for part 1 yet. He takes extremely long to mark assignments which hinders your ability to prepare better
Dr. Roberts seems to be very passionate about IR and really helps his students dive into the specific of what constitutes a well-structured paper. The readings did seem a lot at one point but were very beneficial in his tophat quizzes.
This is my second class with Professor Roberts, and he is one of my favourite profs. Yes, his papers are tough. BUT, he is ready to give detailed feedback and guidance throughout the whole process. He will have individual Zoom meetings with students, and help you every step of the way if you are worried. He is an incredible prof, and very funny!
Roberts is smart but a terrible prof. He clearly does not care about his students and is incredibly condescending. Expectations for projects and tests are unclear and when you ask for clarification he will belittle you.
The first time I had Roberts, I found his class decent, however Poli 371 is much more difficult. Be prepared to know everything about Africa, even the things he does not teach. There is an expectation that you should already have knowledge on the continent. TA was a tough marker. He's funny and available to help, I just didn't find him a good prof
refused to answer emails for 10 days... super dismissive about questions or confusion to many students. Hard no.
You can pass his exams if you read everything. HOWEVER, he assigns an INSANE amount of readings (100+ pages) per week and you have to MEMORIZE EVERY SINGLE WORD to pass. Besides, he doesn't upload the research paper requirement until VERY LATE, which gives you NO CHANCE to start working ahead of time. Just AVOID.
Not only did he give the feedback for the discussions and midterms extremely late, he gave out extremely low averages in the D- to C ranges for both, and deducted marks irrationally. Very condescending on email, and expects far too much for a summer class. Don't take this class with Roberts, or any of his online classes.
He knows what he teaches. He cares and tries his best, but more than often hands in his grades late, but offers solid feedback. To do well in his class, prepare to do readings, ask questions, do your work on time. If you procrastinate on papers, it'll impact your grade immensely. I was close to getting an A-, but handed in a paper late.
The structures his course is so chaotic. You will have a hard time with the course structure if youre a type A type person. Does not record his lectures. The slides he uses does not include the complete course content, so you will have a hard time keeping up if youre absent for whatever reason
This prof doesn't really engage with students and you basically listen to him talk the whole time. His slides aren't helpful they are super messy and contain 10% of course content so you really have to show up and try to pay attention which is difficult.
Lectures are usually unorganized and hard to follow but it's pretty clear he knows the field really well. Wouldn't recommend poli 201 with him if you have trouble following unorganized lectures
he knows what he is teaching. the material covered makes you ready for advanced level courses. textbook and lecture heavy class.
could not for the life of him teach, the slides had no valuable information, slow at marking, monotone voice. During the lectures he could not finish a thought before moving on to another which was frustrating.
Dr. Roberts is a great professor. I found his lectures quite engaging. However, notes should be taken off of what he says and not the slides because they have very little relevant information.
Absolutely avoid. Prof loves to assign 6 chapters per week plus journal articles and have an understanding of outside events which is all required for tests. Plus he does not give clear guidelines for essays and expects you to read his mind. While he is knowledgeable about the material, he makes the class insanely difficult to get a good mark.
Absolutely avoid if possible, you will be putting aside course work for other classes to read/study for his classes. His lectures have no structure and are just hour-long ramblings that are difficult to follow if you didn't read ahead/already know a lot the topic he's teaching.
His lectures are unstructured and virtually make no sense unless you have extensive knowledge of African geopolitics. He will regularly ask test questions that reference obscure African politicians that were mentioned once in the 400page textbook. He will ask questions about assigned readings but 98% of the time the answer is not in the reading.
Roberts is clearly passionate and knowledgeable about African politics but makes the class unnecessarily hard. You have to take thorough notes and read (hundreds of pages each week) the textbook and articles prior to class for them to make any sense. He refuses to post them before class (so you can't even annotate them). Don't take unless needed.
Roberts is a relatively straightforward professor, but he can be a little tough. I would encourage future students to do all the readings (there are a lot) and to make sure that you understand the written assignments, which can be confusing at times. Roberts is accessible outside of class, and willing to help students.
Not the best professor. His lectures are unorganized and everywhere. Most of the time, you would have to do your own work outside of class because he does not really teach in lectures. I would not recommend this professor, avoiding him would save you a lot of time and effort.
He's not bad. Lots of readings, he put geography into the class as well which made memorization a pain with everything else. He comes off a bit strange at times and can give off the vibe he hates the class, but if you take the time and get to know him he's a pretty nice person and is more than happy to help. Office hours are critical.
Definitely not the best professor I've ever had, but still pretty great especially when compared to some others in the POLI department at UofC
Lectures are painfully disorganized. He often got very upset at students and would yelled at the class a few times. Often had discussions on topics we hadn't learned, then became frustrated because nobody talked. Lectures are all over the place, and very difficult to follow. Course itself wasn't super difficult, would probably be easy without him.
The lectures aren't organized and he makes it hard to take notes in class or when you are catching up. The essays are fine and the tests were okay but he punishes you for not coming to class no matter what excuse you have. Topcoat counts for you final grade and if you miss the in class pop questions your grade will take a hit.
I was scared to take the class at first but the comments here are definitely over dramatic, he wasn't even bad. Yes there are a lot of readings but a reasonable amount for any POLI course. If you follow instructions for the paper carefully you'll get a good mark as well as to focus on the lectures and filling in the gaps from the textbooks.
Roberts is a good professor. His lectures were very discussion heavy, but it felt like he was just baiting for the answer he wanted most of the time. Other than that the tests were very easy and he had a system where there were 5 or so essays throughout the term where students receive the grade of whatever essay they did the best on.
Roberts is the only professor I have decided to avoid for the rest of my degree. He made some off-putting remarks towards students, and has a complex where he needs to be the smartest person in the room. While the content was not that difficult, dealing with him sure was. Avoid if you can, especially if you are in a minority. Also, do the Tophat.
Prof. Roberts is very passionate about what he teaches, and as such, expects a lot from his students. He is a bit of a toughie because of that, but he wants to help you succeed. Attendance is definitely necessary and his marking is tough but it is cool to see how passionate he is about relatively unknown topics.
He is a great professor and extremely knowledgeable. He is excellent at keeping the class engaged which is a hard thing to do. He also gives good constructive feedback on papers. The tests were reasonable and papers were graded fairly. The course material is also very interesting even if you are not a poli sci major.
Class content and exams are VERY difficult for a 300 level course. Requires you to memorize many concepts, dates, acronyms, organizations, and thinkers. Mandatory Tophat is annoying. Lots of exams that are very long. What you are expected to know is unclear and VERY random. Assumes students have lots of prior Econ and IR knowledge but he is nice.
The problem with his class is that he rambles a lot, and you miss out on pertinent information because of boredom. the tests are insanely hard, and for a 200 level course, there are crazy amounts of things you need to memorize, including population size and abbreviations(like bruh). Avoid if you can
Dr Roberts is one of the best professors I've ever had. Although he may have higher expectations than some other professors, he always makes his expectations very clear. He even goes as far as telling the class exact test questions and format. He also gives a lot of time to his students and will happily provide feedback and discuss any concerns.
I've had Roberts for a few classes now and I really believe that if you pay attention, take good notes, and READ THE TEXTBOOK, you'll be just fine. He is very passionate about what he teaches and he encourages you to learn more about certain topics. Tests are challenging but he reuses questions from TopHat which is nice. Buy the textbook!
He teaches off the textbook and whatever 'easter eggs' he feels like throwing in. His tests are on 7-8 textbook chapters usually and will not give you much guidance. He also refuses to answer student questions.
I have never written a rating before because I've never felt the need to warn anyone about any classes I've taken. Roberts changed that. Absolutely awful - avoid him at all costs. Incredibly inconsiderate, poor lecturer, unable to speak coherently, and difficult to stay engaged with the content. Boring but heavy course load. Don't risk your GPA.
Worst class I have ever taken. This prof is strict and doesn't care about students doing well. The class is VERY lecture heavy and for the tests, you are expected to memorize every random thing he rambles about. He doesn't provide a clear guideline so you have no idea what to expect on the tests. Avoid this prof at all costs! I know I should have.
His lectures are hard to follow, they jump around a lot and he doesn't upload slides before class. There's top hat homework every week, plus in class questions. His paper structure lets you choose one out of 5 deadlines, but the downside is you lose marks for the small details. Also no extensions and hes hard to deal with if you have to defer exams
Roberts is an okay professor not as bad as other reviews would state however his lectures are not paced well and are difficult to follow moreover his tests are much more difficult. However if you talk to him and seek help he is super nice and willing to helpThere is in class tophat and weekly tophat homework so be prepared. Paper grades were fair.
I was kind of nervous for this seminar after reading some other reviews but honestly I found Roberts to be a decent prof. The workload is what I expected for a 500 level course and while some course components were a bit tougher I found the marking to be fair. It takes a while to get grades back though but overall this was a pretty good class.
Made class enjoyable and lectures were fun for the most part. Sometimes got very dragged on but overall fun to attend. Two midterms, Top Hat questions, final and a paper and all graded fairly with good feedback. Would often give answers to Top Hat questions so if you showed up, you got free marks. A lot of textbook readings but would recommend.
You have to learn the course yourself off the textbook!
Prof Roberts is a great guy but this class was incredibly heavy in readings, upwards of 20 pages or more daily is expected to even have a base understanding of this course. Lectures were relatively unhelpful, and I felt that I had to teach myself everything. The midterm was also the most frustrating, unclear and difficult test I have taken.
He blames technical difficulties on students using tik tok; although that wasn't true. The coursework is not flexible, so I'm glad I dropped his course.
Roberts thoroughly understands the quality of content prescribed in 381 and expects his students to be detailed. If you do the readings, read the textbook chapters, and show up to class, you're going to be just fine. He's not a wishy-washy professor, so don't expect to get away with general understandings, generic ideas, and surface-level effort.
I was an A- and became a B because of the final, take that as you will. I actually did like his teaching, wish I had taken it in the regular semesters and not spring. You do need to put in the work but an A is manageable. The prof was nice and honestly would recommend him if you're passionate about the subject. Best of luck!
The class had ALOT of readings, especially for a spring class. I knew people who took Poli 381 in the fall and didn't have as many readings. His lectures were interesting and he seemed kinda funny. It would probably be easier to have him in fall or winter. Tests were fairly difficult as well as well and he does not like giving extensions.
DO NOT take. It is easily the worst class I have taken in my 3 years. This professor is generally a nice guy but the worst professor imaginable. His expectations are INSANE. He expects you to know the entire history, political governance, and everything about the world to succeed. Unnecessarily emphasized on dates, people, and theories.
Roberts is a challenging professor, but with diligent studying using resources like the textbook and Unstuck study, you can do well. Attend class, participate in TopHat, and be prepared for tough exams. Not the easiest class, but manageable if you put in the work.
Tough grader, especially for a short spring semester. Very passionate but lectures were dense and heavy. Our essay was split into 3 parts, but feedback came right before the next part was due, so it was hard to improve. Most classmates averaged around 65%. Good prof, just hard to please. Wouldn't take another class with him.
DONT NEGLECT THE 38 AWFUL REVIEWS DONT TAKE THE COURSE
He is very knowledgeable and not a bad guy, but I cannot personally follow his lectures. He convolutes many concepts, making them more confusing than they need to be. He often kept us over class time which was frustrating. He is accessible out of class though and answers questions. Textbook required: sometimes does not teach concepts, have to read.
Knowledgeable, but not worth fully worth it. Took this class as a last resort to meet requirements and wish I listened to the other reviews.
Take his courses if you love TopHat questions every week.
The final was out of 115, if that tells you anything. He even bragged about how hard made it beforehand, as if he's expecting us to be unsuccessful on it.
The thing is he doesn't teach, he just passes us his side and leaves us lost. I just started this course and already thinking of swapping. Not worth it guys!
He is bad with accommodations.
his lectures, quizzes and assignments pmo. hes hard to follow along with? i think??
Cares more about how good you are at using Chicago style citations rather than your actual understanding of the concepts, would give you a 0 if a format in your assignment is slightly incorrect. Not good at specifying requirements for d2l assignments or quizzes, so get ready to pull up to every lecture. Loves TopHat.
he sucks, dont take him if you're expecting an easy gpa booster. take literally any other prof.
Look, he's a good guy. Definitely knows his stuff, I'm just not sure if his strength in teaching can keep up with the information he intends to convey. If you want to do somewhat okay, reading the textbook is nearly not optional, and you have to be regularly studying and going to class. His courses can't afford to be left on the back burner🤷‍♂️
I don't get why he's the automatic fill in for courses in POLI that still needed a professor, like is the department that lacking in funding and are there really no other options for profs?
He's nice and very knowledgable. Just a lot of reading ahead before the lectures. He's a tough grader too and his instructions aren't all that clear.
This guy thinks we're his friends and goes on random tangents instead of teaching. You literally have to read the textbook cover to cover to get a decent grade because quizzes have none of the content that was on the slides. Will take a good 70% of a 50 minute lecture explaining an assignment, and by the time he stops talking, it is still unclear.
Listen, Roberts is clearly very knowledgeable in his field, which is a double-edged sword: his lectures become hard to follow because he interweaves many concepts. However, people have no right to complain that the class is too hard, participation for the weekly questions just got released, and it's ~50% WTF are you guys doing?! Put some work in!
I took his intro to International Relations a while ago but was just reminded of his class and why it was so awful. The final project was a paper about a relevant international issue that you thought we needed to be more involved in, I wrote about Feminicide and he told me that "that wasn't an issue that existed." I would not recommend his class.
Roberts gave mixed feelings for Intro to Politics 201; classes were something that, while interesting at times, he spent some of them completely focusing on the assignment details, without providing a rubric for those assignments. As well, some assignments are, in some regards, completely subjective to him and his TAs.
He's pretty great when it comes to being a professor. That said, he's harder to follow bc slides go up after class, so you cant follow along on you're own computer + he likes to go a bit off topic (not by that much, but still). Despite that, if you're capable of a lecture and not expecting to be babied like you were in highschool, he's superb!
Being in his class is the definition of stockholm syndrome.
This guys brutal
Had him a while back for Poli 283, dropped that course due to the ridiculous exams and his TA being a ruthless grader who gave my paper a F for the most minor mistakes. Made the mistake of taking him again for POLI 359, but there are no other options, he is the only prof teaching 359 and many other course.
Literally the worst professor I've ever had. Don't take his class. Take Lisa Youngs lectures instead. This guy will make your life hell with assignments, weekly tests, and mandatory lectures. His marking is nuts, he doesn't provide feedback instead gives you 25% on an assignment and says good luck!
Roberts was an awesome professor and made everything pretty easy. Lots of tests but made it pretty clear what you need to study to do well on each of them. He made the course fun and engaging with exercises/assignments and tophat questions made it really easy to study and review.
I took poli 381 in spring a while ago. He gave so many readings that i've never even had in a fall class. His test questions were out of this world and there would be 90 of them! And also I asked for an extension because I have a documented medical condition, he basically accused me of lying!
imagine you take a rod and drill it through your head while being wide awake. that would be better than taking his class
Only would recommend taking his course if you already have some base knowledge on the subject. Course material was often weirdly worded, used many quotes, and lacked proper concept definitions or explanations on the slides. Out of my full course-load, I tried in his class the hardest and did the most poorly (only class below an A).
