Really good organic chemistry professor. Teaches straight out of the text book. Doesn't throw any curveballs on tests. Straight forward. But any second semester orgo class is tough.

very good organic chem professor. Shows great enthusiasm for the subject and is very willing to give aid if necessary. excellent lecturer, easy to follow his reasoning and his humor
Gives great lectures - clear and funny. Sometimes seems to lack enthusiasm or interest when you ask him questions outside of class.
Excellent teacher, this guy knows his stuff. His lectures are very organized and he tries to make it easier for his students. But how easy can organic chemistry be?
Awesome professor. Really upbeat, told jokes during lecture, kept organic chemistry as interesting as could be. Tests were straightforward, surprisingly not that bad.
Great guy, really funny, teaches straight out of the book but beware, the class is by no means easy. He tends grade a little harsh, but thats from a premed students point of view.
Very helpful, easy to understand. Good Professor overall.
Roy devotes almost all his time to teaching, so he is always available for help outside of class. He gets through all the material very quickly in class sometimes, so some extra time with him might be necessary. He makes a lot of jokes in lecture, usually too many, but he is just trying to keep all of the crazy premeds light. Tests can be hard...
Very good at conveying the material. Got somewhat lazy later on in the semester when he stopped posting notes, but most professors don't do that to begin with. Of course very competitive class. Tests are hard enough to keep the avg low but not impossible. Highly suggest if ever to take organic chemistry.
Teaches almost directly out of the textbook. You'll do fine in the class by just reading the book and doing all the problems; however, that's a lot more work than it sounds like. Very accessible teacher, and you can pretty much go to his office at any given time and find him there. Straightforward, fair, and difficult tests.
Dr. Roy is awesome!! You can literally go to his office & ask him a question whenever, (even outside of office hours)! Very accessible if you need help, funny guy & good lectures. That being said, Chem21 is not an easy class but he tries the best he can to help. Make this class your priority if you're serious about doing well! And go to class!!
Okay, so he's not the nicest guy but he teaches chemistry extremely well and will still explain things to you when you need him to. He's a good teacher.
he yelled at me when i went to visit him at office hours... he's an alright teacher but NOT FUNNY and too excited about chemistry
Very personable teacher who tried his best to make 8:30 lecture lively, but not with much success. He's very accessible at his office, if you need help.
This guy guest lectured a few weeks ago, and he was fantastic, clear, concise. I see why his scores are so high.
Dr. Roy is a fantastic teacher. He's very clear & his tests are straightforward and actually not too hard if you just look at his old exams-(He likes to focus on the same concepts as past years). Roy is very clear & concise w/awesome office hours. Also he does very fair regrades. Recommend doing the in-text problems in Loudon & the reading.
Dr.Roy is an excellent professor. He is very lively and loves to make jokes to keep things exciting. He is always willing to help if you have questions and always makes himself available for office hours. The class is a lot of work but he makes it very fair if you put the time into doing the in text problems and as many problems from the textbook.
Dr. Roy is amazing! His jokes made orgo2 interesting and his exams were very reasonable. You will definitely do well if you understand the material and do all of the assigned hw problems, practice exams, and extra problem sets at least twice prior to the exams. Word of advice: Do not fall behind and cram right before the exams.
Dr. Roy was an excellent teacher. He made a seemingly bland and complicated subject interesting and manageable. He makes himself always available and loves teaching...and his tests aren't all that bad if you keep up with the assigned problems, practice exams, and notes. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
Roy was a really good lecturer. So much so that I didn't skip a single class since he goes over the material in such a clear way. Tests were pretty easy since he focuses on specific things, and even uses past hw and past test problems on his tests. One of the best profs i've had at duke so far
Prof. Roy is great! He is very enthusiastic about this dreaded class, and he made the class actually enjoyable. His tests were very straightforward and fair. I was lucky to get him for Orgo 2!
Chris Roy is seriously the nicest and most helpful guy ever
Christopher Roy's enthusiasm and love for the subject is infectious he is without a doubt one of the best professors at duke and arguably one of the best in the country.
This guy rocks
makes lectures entertaining, pretty helpful if you go to office hours, but exams are hard
He loves chemistry and he's hilarious. His tests are really difficult though.
He loves chemistry and makes lectures as entertaining as possible. The class isn't bad. He always cracks jokes that lighten the sleepy mood that is associated with 8:30s
Dr. Roy was the coolest professor I had my first semester at Duke. He was my Faculty in Residence and is just a great guy. A very solid teacher who cracks alot of jokes. His tests are slightly challenging but he is a great teacher
Dr. Roy is a pretty friendly guy who is willing to help students. Textbook is crucial in his class and he gives a good effort in making the class enjoyable.
Dr. Roy makes lectures enjoyable with jokes and humor, and it's easy to follow along as he talks. Practice tests help a lot in preparing for actual tests, and reading the book is crucial. He was my Faculty in Residence and is a really personable guy who is very easily approachable.
Clear and easy to understand lecture if you read the material over the night before. Tries to make jokes but is kind of just annoying.
Chris is a phenomenal professor. I am absolutely sure there has never been nor ever will be a finer professor than Chris. His lectures, filled with endless insights and accompanied by limitless humor never fail to astound the class. I strongly urge you to enroll in all of Chris's offered courses. Never again will exist a man of such brilliance.
Best chemistry professor around. Always willing to help. Pretty tough to get an A, however.
Fantastic orgo professor, as far as Duke is concerned. Really an excellent lecturer - I never get bored. Tests are not easy, but usually fair and reflect what he's been focusing on in class. Great about answering questions in office hours/email.
Professor Roy is an extremely good lecturer, even at 8:30 in the morning. He cracks jokes constantly which keep things interesting for an intro chemistry course. His tests are difficult though so reading the book and doing practice exams is necessary. Overall a great professor.
Hes a great lecturer but you do most of your learning from the book/by yourself. Sapling homework problems and recitation problems are very helpful to study for exams. Exams are challenging but at the end they're curved well if you are always above the average. Basically though, you teach yourself this class. It's hard so get ready for a rough ride
Great teacher. Tests apparently were hard but I did better with him than with the joke, McCarthy. Deborah. Just leaves a sour taste in my mouth simply typing that name. Oh yeah, back to Roy. Funny, interesting, and great teacher.
I don't understand why there is not enough comments for him. Take Roy if you can. He was by far the best chemistry lecturer for me. His voice is very clear, his lectures are very very helpful, even to the extent that you don't really have to read everything in the textbook. His exams are fair. I've seen other professor's exams, which were worse
Generally clear lecturer; sticks to his approach of keeping examples simple, which I found helpful, esp. in this intro course. Tries very hard to make lectures fun and engaging.
Very funny guy. Lectures like he is a professional public speaker and is very clear and succinct. He's a tad sarcastic when you approach him for help, but he's still makes sure you understand everything. His free responses were a breeze, but his multiple choice were really hard.
Funny guy and very engaging but sometimes makes the lectures too simple... you can't rely on his lectures for all the information- he makes all the concepts seem extremely easy when they are not. Sometimes is difficult to approach because his answers to questions are not very clear.
Go to the lectures! He makes them fun, interesting and with simple explanations allows you to fully comprehend the topic. Keep in mind that the exams are harder than the lectures.
Professor Roy is great! He loves teaching and really cares about the success of his students. He will meet with you individually if you take the initiative and makes lectures entertaining. Make sure you study the textbook though, because the tests are harder than the material seems in lecture.
Dr. Roy is hilarious and he makes it really clear what you need to know to do well.
Absolutely terrible lecturer, focuses on lame jokes and talks really quickly. All about show, very little on the content. Chem 101 is a terrible class and Roy makes it worse.
He is a really good teacher. You have about 2 12 hours of class time per week which is very manageable. His tests are fair. Come prepared and then some and you should be fine.
Decent lecturer.
Professor Roy's pretty great. His lectures are always clear and he constantly tries to incorporate humor. Strongly recommend.
He was good, a little off topic sometimes. Tried to keep the class awake by telling jokes
Roy is funny and really helpful. Definitely go to office hours with him if you are struggling. This was my hardest class as a freshman. The 1st exam hit me like a train. Going to lectures IS NOT ENOUGH! Read the textbook and work all the recommended problems, and you might get above average on the exams. Labs and discussion were pretty easy.
Roy is a really funny lecturer, but he's kind of a jerk in person. That being said, he is the best teacher available to teach 101. I stopped going to lecture when MacPhail switched in. His tests are also significantly easier, but still tough and require comprehensive studying. If you go to all office hours, he will like you provided you're not stpd
Professor Roy's lecture style is conducive to grasping concepts well. Overall a good professor.
Easygoing guy, the tests are everything through. You have to really understand the material, for some people this means reading the textbook for others it means just doing the practice problems. It's whatever works for you!
Dr. Roy is a genuinely nice guy. I would recommend going to office hours if you do not understand the material. His lectures are usually straightforward, but I would still read the chapter beforehand. The textbook is really useful. Tests are pretty difficult. Do the practice problems and start studying way before the test.
Dr. Roy is very clear in his lectures, but there is a lot of material that is covered, and some of it is pretty difficult. Definitely use his office hours!
Dr. Roy is the most helpful and dedicated instructor I've had. Not only does he regularly offer help by email or appointment, but he brings energy and humor to each class. The class is hard, but you leave feeling that you learned a lot, and that's thanks to Dr. Roy's ability to engage students. Work hard, seek help, and you'll do fine.
His sense of humor is on fleek. He is also good at chem.
Everyone at Duke seems to love CPR, but I'm not a fan at all. He's very pretentious and condescending. He interrupts you if you ask a question and sometimes just flat-out refuses to answer questions that "aren't good enough." However, his lectures are alright - just very long and conceptual.
I just recently attended one of Dr. Roy's office hours, and it was incredibly helpful. He allowed me to ask a number of questions and when I didn't understand an answer, stopped and explained in a way that finally made sense to me. I think he was very helpful and spent quite a bit of time trying to explain a difficult concept to me.
Christopher Roy has informative, but very long, lectures. You will not do well if you don't go to class. He uses humor to keep them interesting though. Great guy, good lectures that are easy to follow. Tests are pretty tough, but if you work at it, you can do well.
He thinks he's cooler than he is. Class isn't too bad, but he is definitely overrated as a professor.
Dr. Roy is very knowledgable and tries to keep students interested by using humor. His lectures are long, but he does a great job of trying to keep students awake during an 8:30 class.
The class can be pretty difficult and can be easy to get behind with the other components of the class. Roy is awesome though, he makes lectures as painless as possible by making jokes. He has office hours, so definitely take advantage of those if you are falling behind. Take the discussion and lab parts seriously because they affect your grade.
Dr. Roy is a great teacher who knows his stuff. If you use the resources provided (read the textbook, do the suggested problems & practice tests, apply yourself in discussions &labs), you will do well. Many people skipped his lectures because they were at 8:30 &Gross Hall is at the edge of the earth, but those people did worse on the tests...
He tries to engage you during his lectures, though they can sometimes be boring. If you do all of the unit problems, practice tests, and sapling problems, you'll be well-prepared for tests. He really helps chemistry make sense
Dr. Roy is a great lecturer and exams were very fair. There aren't too many "mandatory" assignments, so you can choose the amount of work you want to put into this class, but the downside is that tests account for a large part of your grade. If you do all the practice problems (book and Sapling), discussion, and lecture, you should be well prepared
Roy is an amazing lecturer and makes plenty of jokes to keep you from zoning out. Chemistry in itself is a hard topic but if you put in the time, he gives you everything necessary to do well. He is extremely smart and therefore sometimes hard to talk to though. The Sapling lessons are by far the most helpful part of the class.
I was required to take this class even though I had taken the AP test and gotten a 4. Despite this, I found the tests, although on rather elementary material, to be very difficult. In addition, the point distribution of this class does not accurately represent the work distribution that students put in. The lectures are boring and often useless.
Chris Roy thinks he's hilarious and a great teacher, but is in reality not funny and is attempting to distract from his poor teaching style with incessant jokes about Shooters. His grading is done by TAs so submit for regrades as much as possible. The class is for students who have clearly already taken Chem 101, not for students looking to learn.
Dr. Roy was an engaging, informative lecturer who kept the mood light every class. He was always available if I needed clarification on a topic, and his class structure is fair. However, the tests are tough (much more difficult than the HW/practice problems). It requires a good amount of work, but i learned a lot and would definitely recommend Roy!
His lectures are good, but it's WAAAY more helpful if you read the textbook before the lecture, otherwise it's pretty easy to get lost in what he's saying. Sometimes the test seem pretty different from the lectures, but that's where you MUST fill in the gaps with sapling, textbook reading, and unit problems. If you work hard you can do well-ish
Professor Roy, more affectionately known as CPR, is a great lecturer and teacher. He does a good job explaining coursework and articulating important points. He is also very open and punctual in helping students outside of class. The tests are challenging. Nonetheless, I would definitely recommend Roy if you're taking 101!
Overall, Dr. Roy is a good professor. His lectures are clear and he explains topics very well. Especially if you don't have much chemistry experience, reading the textbook chapters and doing the practice problems is a must. I also found the Sapling assignments to be extremely helpful, so do them meaningfully.
Dr. Roy is very knowledgable professor and it shows in lecture. He also is very organized and gives you a lot of resources for practice and to ask for help. However, be prepared to work a LOT, especially if you don't have a strong chemistry background. Also, doing well on the final can really help balance out mediocre midterm grades.
Dr. Roy is a great professor. He is passionate about the material he is teaching, which makes the class a little more exciting than I believe it would be otherwise. He's willing to meet outside of class to help, which is very helpful!
Christopher Roy is the professor you want for your first semester at Duke. He explains the course material very well, and holds many helpful office hours. I was never very interested in chemistry, but left wanting to learn more.
Dr. Roy is the man -- very funny and enthusiastic. The class wasn't an easy A, but if you read the chapters and pay attention in class you will be fine.
Prof. Roy was a good professor. His lectures were clear and he holds a lot of office hours (although I never went). He also tries to keep things entertaining by cracking a lot of jokes during lecture, which I appreciated. Read the textbook, do the Sapling, go to class, and you should do fine. Sometimes practice problems appear on the midterms!
Very clear lecturer -- so he's a nice guy, but tbh he doesn't really care about teaching, in that he doesnt even bother to write his own tests. His test problems are all found through online sources (but dont bother searching it's not centralized in one source) and the material is so much easier than orgo. Uploads notes so not mandatory attendance.
Disclaimer: Chem is not my strong suit. The problem with the class wasn't the professor, it was the curve. The midterms were pretty straightforward but the final was HARD. Do the readings and practice problems, but really focus on the practice exams. Not a lot of people came to class since there were a lot of upperclassmen. Lab is fun though
Best chemistry teacher I ever had at Duke. Amazingly great at lectures - somehow makes them not boring. Always willing to meet outside of class and will definitely help you succeed in class. Is a tough grader, but will almost always give credit back on regrades.
Had him for Orgo 2 over the summer. Great lecturer, and really cares about students learning. Made himself very available for help. That being said, the course was very compacted, and a lot of material was covered in a very short time span, so definitely focus solely on the courseload. Not a course to underestimate, despite his great teaching.
Roy is great at explaining difficult chem topics. He's also just a very chill guy. He always makes jokes during lecture and answers questions super quickly (both in lecture and through email, albeit a little condescendingly). Overall, class isn't easy but Roy does a great job at teaching. You will need to put the work in to do well.
Amazing professor, amazing individual. Makes general chemistry very understandable and dare I say fun. I admire the fact that he takes questions and is so approachable given that this is a large lecture. His tests are also really interesting, but if you prepare, it'll be fine. One of the best instructors I've ever had.
Professor Roy brought enthusiasm to Chem 101, and taught the criteria clearly. There is some homework and tests are definitely difficult, but if you spend a lot of time studying and doing practice problems you will be fine.
Chem101 was a fine class, a prereq that I'd never have taken otherwise, but ok. Roy was a good lecturer, has passion for sure and cracks a few jokes. But attending lecture and reading the textbook isn't enough. The tests have a lot of math-y FRQ, so know the difference between understanding what you read and being able to do problems. Do Sapling.
Dr. Roy sometimes co-teaches the class with Dr. MacPhail, which can be a bit confusing because their teaching styles differ. He's funny and knowledgeable, and tells you why something is happening. The tests are difficult and the Sapling doesn't help much. The labs were simple most of the time and didn't really have anything to do with the lecture.
Though I hadn't taken chemistry since 10th grade, this class was not very difficult. Since the lecture notes are posted online and the textbook is fantastic (uses clear, basic language and easily explains tough concepts) attending lecture isn't necessary (though Roy is great). Labs and online HWs are annoying and can take up a good amount of time.
Great guy, very engaging and enthusiastic.
Dr. Roy is an enthusiastic lecturer whose energy can lead you through a content heavy class. Even so, all the information comes rapid-fire fast. Even during office hours, his responses can come far faster than your questions. A very cool man who's flunched often, but he moves quickly.
Roy is very engaging during his lectures and tries to make chemistry as interesting as possible. If you skip lectures, definitely read the textbook. Roy has a cute dog too.
I enjoyed Roy's lectures - his jokes helped lessen the dryness of the material, and he explained concepts clearly. He was enthusiastic and made chemistry about as palatable as it could be. The lectures followed the textbook pretty closely. His exams are fair assessments of your understanding, and he'll give you points back on a regrade if deserved.
His humor is meh. Kind of gets in the way of lectures, and he only explains concepts and topics at the surface level. This class is just fine if you had a solid AP Chem. teacher. If you do not have an AP Chem background, find students to help you because Roy and MacPhail's lectures will not adequately prepare you for exams. Textbook is great-use it
Dr. Roy is a great lecturer; he uses his projected iPad screen for lecture so it's easy to take notes, and he keeps lectures interesting and funny. I highly recommend him, but you still have to study and read the textbook if you want to be proficient in chemistry.
I had Roy for the first half of CHEM101 and Macphail for the second half. Roy is definitely more clear with his language. He's very available outside of class, and offers study sessions before midterms. I'd recommend reading the textbook chapters for this class because it makes things more clear. Definitely take the labs and discussions seriously.
I really disliked his style of lecturing. He often went off topic and did not focus on the material that we were tested on. His tests were extremely difficult and the wording was sometimes confusing.
Absolutely amazing. His lectures are enjoyable and interesting. I really think this man deserves a reward for how great he is. Highly Highly Highly recommend taking his class.
Dr. Roy is great. Very enthusiastic lecturer and very well put-together. The material can be dense, but he does a great job explaining it and his lectures are very organized. Very accessible outside of class. My only regret is that I can't take Orgo with him
I really don't understand why they have us copying 3 pages of 1.25 spaced procedures into a lab notebook by hand before every lab. This is unnecessary, childish, and tedious, not to mention a complete waste of time and effort. This class is good, but lab really, really sucks.
He is a very engaging lecturer and easy-going. I got to know him during my time at the Marine-lab and since then all the feedback I've heard from friends taking his class was that "He made chem so much easier than I thought." I took his CHEM101 this semester (not finished) but he is definitely an approachable, engaging, and devoted lecturer.
I mostly skipped lecture and just relied on AP Chem knowledge plus the textbook/exercises, but when I was in class he was clearly quite the public speaker--he went a bit too slow sometimes in my opinion, but otherwise is definitely a really knowledgeable and generally friendly guy. There are times when he loses his patience, but rare.
Going to class is not mandatory or needed - unless you feel like you learn better in the lecture setting, you will not be left behind if you read the textbook yourself because that's pretty much what he does in lecture. Nothing especially hard, just chem101, study the material and you will do well. If not, it will be tough.
Professor Roy is a really charismatic and knowledgable lecturer. While he could be a little condescending at times, he genuinely tried to help students succeed. He gave very fair midterms that tested understanding of the material and would even clarify things during exams to help you do your best.
If you do poorly on the 3 exams/finals, you will fail this class. That being said, just study for the exams and you should be fine. The exam questions are fairly straight forward from lecture and discussion questions. Lectures are dull, but go to get notes. The textbook is totally useless.
Dr. Roy is a very good professor. He's fair and cares about his students; the tests are challenging but reasonable. The only frustrating thing about the class is that the discussion TAs play a great role in your understanding, so if you end up with a bad TA it can really impact your experience in the class.
If you took AP Chem in high school, you will be fine. Otherwise, be prepared to be confused for the duration of the lectures and learn next to nothing.
Exams test on what is covered in the lectures. He is a clear lecturer and a great professor. He made a very conceptually difficult class achievable.
its an intro chem class- it isn't going to be fun. textbook is incredibly helpful and definitely use old tests to help study. saplings are also helpful. chris is nice though but honestly you don't have to really go to lecture or contact him at all.
The lecture notes are helpful. He teaches for the first two exams, and MacPhail teaches for the 3rd exam. He's nothing extreme- positively or negatively, pretty much the most normal professor from a teaching point of view. There is a problem set every week or so after the associated lecture. If you haven't taken chem in HS, you'll probably fail
I liked Roy as a teacher. He is reasonable and his lectures are clear, even though the topics themselves were difficult. On tests, you were given a formula sheet, so there was minimal memorization required. I did have a rigorous chem background in high school (though not AP chem), so if you are new to chem take this with a grain of salt.
Dr. Roy does an excellent job explaining chemistry concept conceptually and then strengthening our understanding with practical examples. His jokes are a bit painful to listen to at 8:30 in the morning, but overall he was a pretty decent lecturer.
Medium difficulty. Do a lot of practice tests. Class is graded on a bell curve so make sure to be in the top 15-20% range for an A
Dr. Roy is the most accessible professor I have ever had. He genuinely cares about your understanding and success. Yes orgo is difficult, but his tests are extremely fair. If you complete the practice tests and problems and understand them - you will be fine.
I loved Dr. Roy. He explains chemistry concepts so well and makes you feel comfortable asking questions. His grading is clear and there aren't really any surprises. You can tell he really cares about his students and their success.
I wish he curved tests more.
Prof. Roy's a great lecturer that teaches the concepts well, but make sure to ask questions when you don't understand, or else you will fall behind. Textbook isn't required unless you want to use it for practice problems. I didn't take AP and did fine, just make sure you study for the exams since there's only 3 and they basically decide your grade
Roy is great, he lectures very clearly but that mostly all he does with this online format. I didn't attend the lectures live so I would watch the recordings at my own pace. Lots of required videos and taking notes. Go to office hours week of/before exam to ask questions. 3 exams and 1 final.
Dr. Roy is a great professor, he is accessible outside of class and he tries to make the lectures as interesting as possible. The course was graded very fairly and I thought Dr. Roy did a good job of adjusting the course based on COVID-19 and virtual lectures. This professor is a true all-star in my opinion.
This was by far my least favorite class at Duke. Professor Roy gave a test that half of the class had already seen, and when it was brought to his attention he decided to do nothing to fix it, leaving the people who hadn't previously seen the test at a huge disadvantage. There was so much busy work, and so much disregard for students.
He was fine overall but with the final being worth so much, it was unfortunate to test something he didn't emphasize at all and it being worth so many points on the final
Material isn't the most difficult, but the three midterms to tend to have tricky questions on stuff not seen in the class. Gave an exam to a later class that had access to the previous class' answer key for the same exam. However, Prof Roy is super helpful and always has office hours Zooms before exams. He is a good person and will listen to you.
Dr. Roy seems to be a really nice guy but chem 101 is a huge class so don't expect a lot of support. You will be teaching yourself a lot of concepts. Lectures aren't that important to be honest, he teaches word-for-word out of the textbook. He can be hard to get ahold of. Still, very knowledgable and cares a lot about students.
Roy is in general a decent professor and lecturer. He can seem a bit detached from his work but you can still tell that he cares for students and knows his stuff. Lectures aren't mandatory and you can mostly self-study from the textbook. This class definitely requires some effort though to get an A.
Don't need to go to lectures necessarily, just read the textbook. Roy is an ok professor.
The lectures are not helpful, the discussion component is unnecessary. Test questions were significantly harder than the material covered in class. Fast pace. Not very organized in terms of posting assignments/office hours. The TAs are good tho (tests are graded fairly quickly).
Lectures are useless. You're better off reading the textbook on your own. Relatively straightforward class, but Roy is completely unaccessible via email and so a large degree of independent work is required.
Chemistry 101 isn't suppose to be a hard class. But his lecture is so bad and useless that you need to spend so much extra time out of class and read the textbook. Roy's jokes are not funny and he is often unaccessible. TA is in general more useful than the professor.
Lecture was only helpful to the extent of guiding what you needed to teach yourself on your own. Professor Roy seems like he would be accessible outside of class, but he cancels on meetings often and isn't great at responding to emails.
Roy's lectures are not good: he basically reads from the textbook in front of the class, then writes verbatim what he says on the board. Thinks he's funny. Associated labs very difficult but fun. Tests are very hard, final exam is extremely difficult. All exams are just math, but partial credit is given. Discussion sections basically useless.
He's alright. Often accessible for office hours. (I know he had to cancel some this semester due to family stuff.) I recommend going to those if you need something from him since he doesn't seem to check his email that often. Please do practice problems, they help.
Dr. Roy made this class much harder than it needed to be. Hes not a bad guy, but does not respond to emails and I found him somewhat curt during office hours. His lectures were not engaging and I found it difficult to pay attention. The online achieve textbook is the only thing that got me through the class.
Professor Roy seemed unorganized and disengaged. The lectures were extremely boring and not that helpful. The textbook is the best place to try and learn the material. Use practice tests to help study for exams!
Roy had 600ish students in CHEM 101 this semester, so I get he wasn't the most accessible; however, the textbook is a much better resource than his lectures. He is an okay lecturer but the textbook or the Achieve ebook is definitely a necessary supplement for practice.
Roy's Chem 101 class was overall good and a decent introduction to Duke as a freshman. He complained about holding office hours and outside of class interaction, but his lectures were easy to understand and follow. Class is good! But study.
He knows what he's teaching but not always the best at explaining if you don't know what's going on. If you do a bunch of the practice problems that he suggests, you should be okay on the exams.
Worst professor I've had during my four years of Duke.
The lectures are not great, I had a bad habit of falling asleep every lecture until I stopped going. This course was basically the same as pre-AP chem from high school, so it was quite easy. The tests weren't difficult either. He also provides short 5ish minute videos on each topic made by some other professor, which were better than the lectures.
